This is a book for those who love garlic or want to learn more about this fascinating ingredient both its history and its use today.

Juicing, Fasting, and Detoxing for Life: Unleash the Healing Power of Fresh Juices and Cleansing Die

In a nutshell: This is a very well-thought-out book. We've been eating processed foods for so long, it is nice to know there is something we can do to help reverse some of the damage they are doing! There is a very strong message throughout the book, encouraging the reader to eat better by including more vegetables and fiber, and reducing red meat, sugar and highly processed foods. The authors have addressed all the main toxic areas in the body, providing helpful information on detoxing and fasting in order to heal and cleanse the body to become healthier. Each chapter includes facts pertinent to the subject, as well as supportive instructions. For cleanses, they include a sample menu with references to recipes within the book. Overall, it is easy to find information using the Index or chapter headings if you don't want to read the whole book.
Extended Review:
I was amazed to find a lot of information on Candida, a yeast-like health issue that one of my close relatives has suffered with for years. I immediately called my relative and read some of the book over the phone. She was so excited to hear what the book said, and can't wait to follow the cleansing suggestions to relieve the symptoms she has had for years! I can see how this book can be life-altering in a great and natural way!
Content: The content supports the book very nicely. It starts by talking about health, then explains the how's and why's of juicing, fasting and detoxing. The book then goes into the specifics of cleansing your colon, liver, gallbladder and kidney. It then progresses into more detox programs and cleansing yourself mentally and emotionally. In the final chapters the authors include information on the nutrient content in food, recipes to use while fasting and detoxing, and a nice resource guide.
Format: The chapters flow nicely, providing the reader with some great information. I was never confused while reading, but rather caught myself nodding several times in support of what was being explained. In addition to providing great information in each chapter, the authors have also provided some great guides on the nutrition of foods, recipes and resources as a wrap-up at the end of the book.
Readability: I found the book easy to read. The authors have presented factual and scientific information in a way that everyone can understand. The index is easy to use and helps the user find things quickly.
Overall: The book provides just about everything you need (except a juicer, vegetables/food, and supplements) to detox and cleanse your system in order to become healthier. I plan to try a lot of the cleanses and recipes in an effort to become healthier and more energetic! Her other book "The juice lady's guide to juicing for health" is much better. This one really doesn't give much information and left me wanting to look for another book. When I found her other book, I wondered what the purpose of this one was.Juicing, Fasting and Detoxing for Life encourages readers to not only eat well but to lead healthier lives. The book does focus primarily on eating well as a means to living a healthier life. Calbom does make a serious attempt to show the impact our dietary choices have on our bodies. The discussion does consider dioxins, refined sugars, processed flour and other foods that we encounter daily.
The chapters are well organized and logically structured. The sidebars are informative and do not detract from the main narrative. The introduction and first chapter discuss the value of healthy living and an overview of how to achieve it. The following chapters discuss juicing, fasting and detoxing (in that order). The next four chapters delve into cleansing and detoxing programs. The last two chapters are a nutrient guide and recipes.
While the overall message and conclusions resonate with holistic living and healthy eating, I feel that the scientific evidence presented is not completely representative of the relevant scientific literature. For example, the discussion on BPA (bisphenol A), an additive used in plastics, and the discussion of avoiding #7 plastic does not consider the current scientific debate on these issues (which include dosage levels, interspecie differences, natural ubiquity of these chemicals, etc) all of which seem to conclude that more work (especially long-term research) is needed. While our usage of dioxin has been increasing, dioxin levels in human milk and blood have been dropping steadily since the 1970s. Health Canada issued a report on BPA that cautioned its intake in large doses for children under the age of seven (the report resulted in more media-hype than scientific consideration).
Some readers may only be interested in the recipes. The ones that I tried were delicious, and easy to modify for personal taste. With a good juicer, they are easy to prepare (although not all recipes need a juicer). It is strange that the recipe for spinach-avocado soup or spinach power do not contain spinach. There is no explanation given for the omission, hence concluded that it is an oversight. Overall, it's a good book but needs a little more research and editing.
Armchair Interviews says: This book by a very prolific nutrition writer may interest people who focus on learning new techniques for good health.I bought this book after reading a lot of comments on Amazon.com (I go there when I need to decide on which books to buy as Americans post a lot of comments, a pity the same ones are not posted on other Amazon sites). I was looking for a book about juice fasting and ended up buying the Juice fasting bible and this one because they seemed to have more positive comments than most. I found Juicing, Fasting and Detoxing for life an extremely useful book but it is all about detoxing, not my first priority, which was juice fasting, therefore the 4 stars and not 5. I do believe that I should do some detoxing only it is so very complicated.... I will start with some juice fasting and maybe one day I will be up to the detox. Cherie has a great writing style, which you don't often find among health writers and unlike journalists who write about these topics, she does know what she is talking about.
This book includes quite a few detox programmes like the Colon Cleansing, Liver, Gallbladder and Kidney cleansing and even a Mental and emotional cleansing. As far as the juice and soup recipes go I will try a few but I have to say that my husband and I find it very difficult to take the green juices. And some of the soups include milk, something I dislike profoundly. No matter how much healthier green juices may be we will stick to the recipes of The Juice fasting Bible which include some fruit and taste a lot nicer. What is the point of doing something extremely healthy which you hate and will eventually give up? Celery juice we find rather hard to drink, no matter how many other ingredients you mix with it, the taste and smell always seems to be very present.
If you are looking for a detoxing book I can really recommend this one, if juice fasting is your priority.... not really, you won't find any fasting in it or you have to consider the detox programme as a fast. One last thing, Cherie seems to use a centrifuge juicer something which amazed me because I thought that if you are really serious on juicing for your health you would recommend and use a masticating juicer. I own an Oscar but I would recommend you do a lot of research before buying one. They are not cheap and the Oscar has a few problems.Cherie Calbom hit a home run with this book. She really explains the whole package when it comes to why and how you should do a juice fast or juicing for that matter. For the person who ever wondered if a juice fast or juicing is really worth the trouble should read this book. Her testimony is really moving and can really help the person trying to get back to feeling good and heal from health issues. If you or a loved one have health issues, this is a must read book for you. This program really works. My husband and I tried her recipes and now use at least one of them everyday. One day I had a stuffy nose and was irritated with sinus issues. I did her sinus juice and within about an hour or so, I was way better. Don't like radishes, but it definately worked. This woman knows what she is talking about. I looked for many books on juicing, and bought many, her juicing books are the best.
Bobbi Brown Beauty

I had high hopes I'd learn alot from Bobbi.....unfortunately she really did not succeed at passing on her proficient make up application skills. I hadn't seen the book at all before ordering so I had no idea what to expect. I had hoped she was going to take the typical modern woman like myself (average 35 yr old)and step us through some make up application. Instead ...the book is filled with pictures of Magazine cover models ..mostly under 25 who've never known fine lines and the struggles of applying foundation on wrinkled skin. Not to mention that Bobbi has lots of photos of women bearing the kinds of make up application techniques.....she says she doesn't advocate..such as eyeliner on the inner rims..
Overall....I didn't come away feeling like I got my money's worth....I did however learn some perspective on Bobbi personally..and although I found that interesting...it won't help me look any better tomorrow... sorry Bobbi!I bought this book based on the recommendation of my sister-in-law, who has worked at several department-store makeup counters. She said that Brown's book had a lot of really great information, especially for a novice makeup wearer like me. However, I found the book to be lacking in specific techniques for applying makeup.
Some sections were fairly thorough, but most (especially the section on doing eye makeup) remained at a really general level. The only main piece of advice I got from the book is to wear yellow-based foundation, concealer, and powder. A lot of the other information Brown gives is just too general; using some diagrams and showing color variations would have made it much more practical.
Last year, I purchased Sonia Kashuk's _Real Beauty_, and I definitely recommend that book over this one. Kashuk's book shows detailed photos of her makeup techniques so you can really see how a professional makeup artist applies makeup.
I wanted to like Brown's book, but found it not as helpful as I hoped it would have been!I'm not a makeup maven, not by a long shot. Up until last week, I was a stay-at-home mom who knew very little past a little lipstick and the absolute basic brushes. I picked "Beauty" up because I was interested in sprucing up my look a bit for when I do leave the house, for church, various special occasions and errand running. Just because I spend a good portion of my time indoors doesn't mean I have to look like I just rolled out of bed when I go out. I'm still a stay-at-home mom, but my look more closely reveals how wonderful I feel on the inside. "Beauty" addresses the basics of make-up, from tools, to easy application, to how-and where-to shop for make-up. Bobbi also talks at length about loving the looks that God gave you. There are separate chapters on Black, Asian, and Latina beauty, as well as wedding day beauty (oh that I had this book on MY wedding day four-and-a-half months ago!) and make-up for photography and television. When they say ULTIMATE, they weren't kiddin'. This is a good reference for beginners and the experienced alike. My husband is a theatrical make-up artist, and even he found a little useful information. This is a comprehensive, not to mention concise, addition to any beauty library. I made a very smart buy!

Bobbi Brown Beauty is a basic book for learning to love and take care of yourself. The main focus is making yourself look presentable and "naturally beautiful" without using lots of makeup. It tells you what you'll need for glowing skin, and includes application instructions for day and night makeup, which all take under 20 minutes-practical and easy. Basically, the focus of this book is functional "no-nonsense" makeupthe basics on skin care, brushes, tons of tips and instruction on makeup (all natural), what to spend most of your money on, and general care of yourself (healthy diet, etc..).I was looking for a fun book that I could play around with. Bobbi Brown Beauty lacks variety , and is basic and boring if what you're looking for is fun, glamorous, made up looks --which is why I only rated it three stars. Look to this book if you love the no-makeup look, are pressed for time, or have never worn makeup before and need a place to start. (This is a great starting place). ...

This book is organized beautifully and is full of all the makeup advice you will ever need. It is easy to understand and the photos are pleasing to look at. It has chapters on each type of makeup (foundation, powder, blush, eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, lipstick), as well as skin care, makeup tools, makeup organization and storage, etc. It tells you how to make a "flaw" a signature feature you can be proud of, how to do your makeup for an interview, and more. It contains practical advice about how to find your own makeup style, how to choose colors for your skin type, and how to be natural beauty by using secrets of the trade. This book is not about becoming something you are not by painting and contouring your face, it's about working with what you have and making the most of the features you were blessed with. It is an education in basic beauty techniques that will help you look fabulous, no matter who you are.
I am 29 years old and I knew a lot about makeup and felt pretty good about how I looked before I read this book, but I learned a few simple things that have helped me look in the mirror and see how beautiful I can really be. (Her tip on yellow-toned powder is my favorite!) I highly recommend it for women of all ages and skin-types.

The Ultimate Guide to Pregnancy for Lesbians: How to Stay Sane and Care for Yourself from Pre-concep

Some questions this book will help you think through: am I (are we) ready for kids? can I do it alone? how to choose a donor? what is it like, trying to get pregnant? what are my options if I don't get pregnant quickly? how will I handle being pregnant? what kind of birth do I hope for? what is it like for the non-bio mom? and what kind of family will we be in those early days?
In each case the author doesn't tell you what to do, but helps you figure out what YOU want to do. She clearly has her own preferences -unmedicated birth is best; circumcision sucks; breastfeeding rocks! -but they are carefully argued, pretty persuasive, and the tone is consistently pro-child and pro-women.
Sensibly, Pepper puts the tough stuff up front: the first chapter is about getting yourself as physically, mentally, financially and legally ready to start a family as you can possibly be. Then it's on to getting the goods, finding out what's going on under the hood, and starting the crazy ride on the conception "rollercoaster." The chapter offering Ten Tips to Keep You Sane during this crazy period is worth the price of the book alone!
These early chapters are the most detailed and probably the ones you'll read over and over, but there are also useful roadmaps to each trimester, as well as a helpful section on sexuality and pregnancy, birth options, and the early weeks with your baby. There's also a comprehensive index and a helpful section on extra resources, from lesbian-friendly sperm banks to useful books to dyke-mama blogs.
In a nice touch, the new edition is dedicated not only to "every lesbian dreaming baby dreams" but also "the many dyke daddies and tranny pops out there." Right on.
As a further bonus, the new cover is gorgeous, as is the photo of the author and her now seven year old daughter -clearly that rollercoaster was worth it! It all adds to the supportive, happy vibe of this indispensable guide to what the author calls "the wacky world of lesbian conception and pregnancy."Rachel Pepper's new edition of her Ultimate Guide to Pregnancy for Lesbians is a welcomed event. With her clear writing and pull-no-punches style, Rachel takes the mystery and fear out of this amazing and popular process. Lesbians deserve to be spoken to in our own language, and this book is accessible and smart in the best ways. Things I didn't know I didn't know are answered fully, informatively, and often with a lightheartedness that reaches across the page to the reader so we can understand what's going on. I would recommend this book to any single or coupled lesbians who are thinking of embarking on the baby journey. This is the most extensive pregnancy book for women who have to WORK at getting pregnant rather than starting at the "oops you're pregnant" point. If you're straight but single, lesbian, or partnered to a transman, this book is for you! Ms. Pepper is wonderful at being all-inclusive to all of her readers, including the family and partners of the pregnant woman. The book is positive and upbeat while still being serious and realistic. There is absolutely nothing I would change, add, or take away from this book and is worth keeping at your bedside if you're pregnant or beginning the process.I'm really surprised at all the glowing reviews of this book! For me, the only thing setting it apart from a million other mediocre pregnancy books is the lesbian perspective, which I do appreciate. Overall, though, I found it pretty fluffy and not entirely reliable. The book gives an overview of numerous topics without providing a lot of detail on very many of them. This author's only qualification seems to be that she is a lesbian who had a baby, and she therefore offers tidbits of sometimes-dubious advice based on her own experience, such as...don't eat broccoli while you are pregnant? My midwife thought that one was hilarious.
I ordered this book along with Stephanie Brill's "New Essential Guide to Lesbian Conception, Pregnancy, and Birth," which I found to be MUCH more useful and informative. All of the same topics are covered there, but in more detail and with more authority -Brill is a renowned midwife and educator who has worked extensively with queer families. The Brill book provides WAY more detail and guidance on fertility charting, sperm banks, and insemination methods.
I am giving this book two stars because I think it's really important that there be pregnancy and birth resources geared specifically to queer women, and to the best of my knowledge, there are only really two such books out there. But trust me: The other one is much better. As someone who needs "assistance" getting pregnant, I especially appreciated the review of the different options for insemination and frank discussion of the positives and negatives to each. Most pregnancy books presume the reader is already pregnant, whereas the first 75 pages or so of this book are all about the process lesbians and anyone else who's not "getting pregnant the old fashioned way" go through to even get sperm near an egg for conception. A great resource, written by an author who has been there, not a medical establishment or doctor.

More shocking is if you choose to read the book by this same author of the medicine of the Civil war period, you will see how little actually changed between the two wars.great sketches of instruments, define many of the treatments and period beliefs. gives period names of common ailments and also explains how different sicknesses were confused, such as fevers or disentary.

I definitely would have rated this little book a lot higher if it weren't for the absolutely horrible print. It made me just about see double (my eyes aren't the best, but even so . . .) The drawings are great and the few descriptions I read interesting, informative, and, at times, humorous. The other books in this "history and Americana" series look interesting too, but I'll be darned if I'm going to spend money on something that is so frustrating to read.Read Best Reviews of Revolutionary Medicine, 2nd (Illustrated Living History Series) Here
