Yoga, Power, and Spirit: Patanjali the Shaman

Yoga, Power, and Spirit: Patanjali the ShamanIf any of the mystical traditions appeal to you, please invest the small price to own this book. Clearly and concisely this small treasure reviews Patanjali's sutras. Alberto Villoldo makes them poetry to the soul and heart. Each sutra is given a few sentences so beautifully expressed that no more is necessary. To alleviate "disciple-quilt" he states so wonderfully to the advancing student on page xxvii "As Swami Venkatesananda said: "Renounce the self that does the renunciation". With so many New Age books leaving enthusiasts with an almost inability to speak a sentence without self-correction, "Yoga, Power, and Spirit" takes the true student to the heart of the ancient traditions and well beyond the superficial hype of the current, sometimes, very limiting explanation of the metaphysical and sacred. Simply Dr. Villoldo gives us an easily understood adjunct to other sound authors such as Paramahansa Yogananda, Wayne Dyer and Greg Braden. He is in that class!

This book is a portable treasure chest of inspirations. Dr. Villoldo doesn't just reword the old, he renews it for what is needed by today's humanity. It is a bridge between yesterday and tomorrow. Read it and let it come alive within you and renew your spirit for the future.

This translation was referrenced at the Yoga Journal Conference in Hollywood, Fl. a few months ago during a workshop on the Yoga Sutras. I immediately purchased a copy for myself and one of my students. I own four other translations of the Yoga Sutras, but I was able to go through this translation and find passages easily in language that I am using daily for readings in my classes. I teach to newer students and the sutras on breath are easily incorporated into classes and easily understood. I would recommend this for any student of the Sutras as a compliment to any other translations they may be studying.

Yoga, Power and Spirit was a lovely experience, one I will give as Christmas gifts and refer to again and again. The text in the beginning of the book is written in simple beauty and clarity. The poetry speaks for itself.

The Biggest Loser: The Weight Loss Program to Transform Your Body, Health, and Life--Adapted from NB

The Biggest Loser: The Weight Loss Program to Transform Your Body, Health, and Life--Adapted from NBC's Hit Show!If you really like the show and can't wait for each new segment to air, you'll also want a copy of the book. It reveals more about the contestents and their struggles.

If you want a specific diet and exercise program that reflects what the contestents went through, you may or may not find that here. I say "may" because it wasn't uncommon for those on the show to do 3 hours of exercise a day (sometimes more) to achieve the kind of weight loss that showed on the scale each week.

Are YOU up to that kind of challenge? If you are, you can take the info in this book and go for the burn. If not, you can still follow the plan and lose weight but be aware that you may not see the same dramatic weight loss as the contestents on the show without exerting maximum effort.

I really enjoyed reading this book and actually like it BETTER than the show (and I confess I really didn't like the show much with its humiliating climax, where one contestent would be voted off the show per week). Within the context of a book, the personal stories are engaging and much of the book is inspirational, just the type of material that might compel you to stick to your exercise and diet plan.

There is plenty of useful info here although I can't say it hasn't been covered in other books. What sets this one apart are the personal accounts and I can never get enough of those. When someone starts at 300 pounds plus and manages to get to goal weight, it becomes pretty clear that nearly anyone can get there, with enough willpower and motivation. This book could be one more motivational aid.

'The Biggest Loser' book is filled with stimulating stories of personal triumph over weight from the popular television show's contestants.

If you're one of the millions of fans of the hit NBC television reality weight loss show "The Biggest Loser," then undoubtedly you have become personally acquainted with names like Ryan, Kelly, Mo, Dave, and Drea from Season One as well as Matt, Dr. Jeff, Suzanne, and Suzy from Season Two, just to name a few.

You probably feel like you know these people intimately because you have watched them work so very hard on your television sets each week to tackle a commond problem -what to do about their obesity. Their commitment to doing something positive and permanent about their weight is indeed inspiring and educational for a home viewing audience, two-thirds of whom have a weight problem of their own that they need to deal with and don't know what to do about it.

That's where The Biggest Loser book steps in. This book is based on the popular television show and allows you to read more about the contestants from the show to learn how they have been able to be victorious over their battle of the bulge while also communicating important principles to apply in your own life to help get that fat monkey off your own back for good.

The Biggest Loser is a beautifully crafted book full of colorful pictures, personal stories from cast members, advice from the show's trainers Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels, a thorough explanation of "The Biggest Loser" diet plan, a 12-week exercise routine, scrumptuous recipes including personal favorites from the contestants, motivational remarks from those who went through the most dramatic weight loss change, and the secret tips about how to make weight loss and healthy eating a permanent part of your life.

Cheering you on to become the "biggest loser" that you can possibly be, The Biggest Loser book asks the simple question, "Wouldn't it be wonderful to have the body you want -slender, toned, fit, and healthy -and have it for life?" Who among us who has struggled with weight loss would respond back with anything but a thunderous YEAH BABY?!!! This dream can become a reality when the steps outlined in The Biggest Loser book are applied.

Read about the struggles that each contestant had with weight prior to their television experience and how "The Biggest Loser" show literally changed their lives forever. As someone who has lost over 180 pounds, I can certainly relate with their stories of heartache and frustration about what to do about being overweight. It's not a fun experience and you just feel so hopeless. But once you read The Biggest Loser, you will find that while it won't be an easy road to restore your health, there is definitely a way to rise to the occasion and gain victory over weight problems once and for all!

There's a unique section in The Biggest Loser book called "From Reasons to Resolutions" which will get you to visualize and think about why you want to lose weight and what will happen if and when weight loss occurs. Getting your mind in the right frame of reference will get you started off right and make your eventual success that much more likely to happen.

In a nutshell, "The Biggest Loser" diet consists of limiting your caloric intake to seven times your body weight. For example, when I weighed 410 pounds in January 2004, I could eat 2,870 calories according to this plan. At my current body weight of 225, that number of calories per day drops down to 1,575, which is probably a little bit less than what I consume on my low-carb lifestyle but not too far off. There's a creative "4-3-2-1 Biggest Loser Pyramid" which shows you which foods you should eat and in what quanties, including fruits and vegetables, proteins, whole grains, and "extras." Guess which one you eat the least of?

You also are encouraged to drink lots of water, use artificial sweeteners sparingly, eat 4-6 planned meals, portion-size your foods to avoid overeating, read labels like a hawk (there even a neat "translation" guide to help you figure out what certain terms mean on a nutrition label), and steer clear from certain appetite-stimulating foods. It's all explained in great detail in The Biggest Loser book.

I really enjoyed the "Take A Cue" blurbs at the bottom of the pages which feature oneor two-sentence words of wisdom from the cast of "The Biggest Loser." You really feel like they're talking directly to you and rooting for you as you turn page after page of The Biggest Loser book. I also was attracted to the recipes section towards the back of the book, which included some excellent low-carb ones including Dave's chicken salad, Ryan's portabello pizza, Suzanne's grilled salmon burgers, and Drea's turkey wrap. My mouth is watering just thinking about all these delicious recipes.

As a 180+ pound low-carb weight loss success story I don't personally adhere to all of the advice provided in The Biggest Loser book, but I am encouraged to see many of the contestants giving superb advice to would-be losers: stay away from sugar, get more water consumption, eat often enough to ward off hunger, skip the dinner bread and eat a salad first at a restaurant, replace television watching with exercise (except to watch "The Biggest Loser," of course!), eat healthy carbs found in fruits and vegetables, and much more. You can really learn a lot about good basic habits that you can incorporate to make weight control a long-term part of your life.

There is also a section in the book which urges local communities to conduct their own "Biggest Loser" challenges to help people deal with this very real problem. They include step-by-step instructions about how to organize it and replicate what so many have seen on television, including stunts and races to give the contestants an incentive to continue on. Applying these recommendations will make your local "Biggest Loser" challenge a huge success.

A special "where are they now" section gives an update on all 26 contestants who became winners by becoming big losers thanks to "The Biggest Loser." You will be amazed by how far these contestants have come and how their lives have been literally turned upside down for the better. I can relate and hope and pray many will be uplifted and have a fire lit within them to lose weight and keep it off for good after reading The Biggest Loser.

I really wanted to love this book... but it seems as if the producers rushed it to print. There are very little before/after photos... and very little in-depth profiles of the contestants. All you get is blurbs from them... and a recipe, which may/may not be their creation. The caloric recommendations... 1050 kcal for people below 150 pounds... are too low...especially for the amount of exercise prescribed. Rarely these days do any experts advise going below 1400 kcal for an active woman, with 1200 be the absolute minimum. Even with such minimal caloric requirements, no mention is made of vitamin supplementation. In the recipe section, they often refer to agave nectar/syrup... yet they do nothing to explain it, its benefits, or where to buy it. (It's a low-GI sweetener from a plant in Mexico.) All-in-all, disappointing.

I actually read this book and Jillian Michaels book Winning By Losing. I think this book is interesting and fun because it does give you insights into the contestants and their trials and tribulations. I do agree that as far as nutrition plans go The Biggest Loser book is slightly lacking. If you are looking for a weight loss plan, Jillian's book is definately the best choice. Although the Biggest Loser book is not the most informative, as a fan of the show I enjoyed the read.

I liked this book because I enjoy watching the show. I admire and respect all those contestants/dieters who go through all that "struggle and hard work" to lose weight and feel better about themselves.

Personally, I feel that reading the book is not motivation enough for people who are tremendously overweight. They need the one-on-one like the wonderful people on the TV show receive.

So if you're thinking of buying this book to lose weight, save your money. However, if you just want to hear more about the show and the participants, you may want to have this book.

I liked it ... but didn't loooooooove it.

Babies and Other Hazards of Sex: How to Make a Tiny Person in Only 9 Months, with Tools You Probably

Babies and Other Hazards of Sex: How to Make a Tiny Person in Only 9 Months, with Tools You Probably Have around the HomeWhen I first read this, before I had (or even considered having) children, I assumed that it was intended as humor, and I laughed (a lot) at what I imagined were its comic exaggerations. Now that I have a child, I realize that this is in fact a no-nonsense, completely serious and accurate description of pregnancy, childbirth, and child-rearing.

While other baby books mislead you with emotional descriptions of the joy and wonder your "little one" will bring, Dave Barry pulls no punches in his hard-hitting, gritty portrayal of baby behavior. There is a quiz early on whose purpose is to deter prospective parents who may be weak of heart or stomach, with questions such as "How many diapers will an average baby go through before it is toilet-trained?" or "What is the most repulsive thing a baby would put in its mouth?" Those of you who are parents will know the answers. Those of you who are not, be warned: you may think Dave Barry's answers are too outrageous to be true, but you're wrong!

Anyway, this book is an excellent source of information for anyone who is considering having children, or who is considering not having children. It is also useful for those who already have children, as it will reassure them that they are not alone -though they may wish they had read (and heeded) it sooner.

Hi all you expectant parents out there. If are like my wife and I, as soon as we learned that we were pregnant my wife immersed herself in Dr. Spock and other "reputable" child care and parenting books. Being of a somewhat different ilk, I undertook my own brand of pre-baby training with this wonderful primer about babies, where they come from, what happens when they get here, why they do what they do, and how to cope with it all as a parent.

Know what? Dave Barry's book is the most readable, enjoyable, and useful introduction to the little people who show up at our homes that I have ever seen. Move over Dr. Spock!

Dave gives advice about diapers and dealing with unsolicited advice on parenting. He also explains in perfectly understandable detail why babies spit up their food (it's the "food-return loop" that causes it), drool, and other typically unexplainable baby behaviors. In addition, there are tips to fathers about when diapers need to be changed, etc.

Read it and weep or laugh out loud, depending on whether your baby's already home or still on the way. This book presents real life...no sugar coating here!

This book also makes a great wedding present!

5 stars, no doubt about it!

Buy Babies and Other Hazards of Sex: How to Make a Tiny Person in Only 9 Months, with Tools You Probably Now

There are two things that will assist you in getting the full enjoyment from this book. First, you have to appreciate Dave Barry's sense of humor. Second, you have to have experienced the "birth process" as well as seen those formative years involving toilet training, preschool selection, first words spoken, and taking a kid to a restaurant or on a plane.

And if you haven't done these things, you still may find this book entertaining!

There were four times a laugh/sob just escaped spontaneously as I was reading this book:

As part of a quiz to measure whether you have the knowledge to become a parent, Barry asks, "What do you do if your two-month-old baby is screaming in an airplane and refuses to shut up and is clearly disturbing the other passengers?

a. Summon the stewardess and say: 'Stewardess, whose baby is this?'

b. Summon the stewardess and say: 'Stewardess, this baby is very interested in aviation. Please take it up and show it around the cockpit for the duration of the flight.'

c. Summon the stewardess and say: 'Stewardess, please inform the captain that this infant has just handed me a note in which it threatens to continue crying unless it is taken to Havana immediately'" (p. 3).

In selecting toys for the newborn: "You don't want so-called educational toys that claim to teach 'spatial relationships,' because the only spatial relationship newborn babies care about is whether they can fit things into their mouths. This means you want toys that will fit safely and comfortably in a baby's mouth. The best way to select such toys is to try them out in your own mouth, bearing in mind that yours has eight times the volume of baby's. When you go to the toy store, ask to see eight of each potential toy; if you can stuff them all comfortably in your mouth, you should buy one. Remind the salesclerk to sterilize the other seven, so as not to pass infectious diseases on to the next shopper. The clerk will appreciate this thoughtful reminder" (p. 21).

On naming your baby: "In recent years, it has become fashionable to give children extremely British-sounding names, such as 'Jessica.' I think this is an excellent idea. Despite the fact that Great Britain has been unable to produce a car that can be driven all the way across a shopping mall parking lot without major engine failure, Americans think that anything British is really terrific. So I recommend you give your baby the most British name you can think up, such as 'Queen Elizabeth' or 'Big Ben' or 'Crumpet Scone-Hayes'" (p. 38-39).

On kids learning to talk: "I remember once my wife called me into the living room, all excited. 'Watch this,' she said. 'Robert, where's your head?' And by God, Robert pointed to his head. I was stunned. I couldn't believe what a genius we had on our hands. Then my wife, bursting with pride, said, 'Now watch this. Robert, where's your foot?' Robert flashed us a brilliant smile of comprehension, pointed to his head, and said, 'dog'" (p. 70).

Too close to home! Be prepared to have your funny bone tickled.

My wife got me this as a gift, and my only complaint is that my youngest is now eight, and I could have used this a long time ago. Dave Barry hits the nail right on the head with this book.

In this book, Barry puts a very serious subject in a humorous tone, but he still speaks the truth. Yes, this book is intended as humor, but his reasoning and descriptions are pretty dead on true. I seriously could relate to a lot of the situations he described. This book was hysterical.

Jerry O'Brien's illustrations are hilarious, and, as always, the perfect compliment to Barry's book. For any new parents or expected parents, this book is definately for you. Not only will this book not pull any punches, and tell it like it is, but it is very enjoyable reading, and will help ease some of the axieties that you may already have. Yeah, it might add a few as well, but hey, at least you'll laugh so hard, you'll forget about labor pains.

Dave Barry is easily the king of comedy, and this short book even illustrates this even more. You won't be disappointed.

My husband and I are thinking about trying to conceive soon, and we thought this would be a great humorous view of the whole process. And, it is! As always Dave Barry brings such true humor to the process. I especially love the recounts of conversations he's had with his child, espeically the ones that revolve around the word "Why?".... (e.g., "That's a goat." "Why?") My only gripe is that there isn't more to this book, a lot of page space is dedicated to only mildly amusing pictures.

Overall though, a fun read which you can finish in one or two sittings.

This book was just what I needed. Easy to read and understand. It has given me the motivation go and get busy. Getting more fitness into my daily routine was deemed necessary as I am seeing too many folks who are overweight and getting diabetes and losing their ability to stay independent. Strength is failing. Balance is failing. Endurance is weakening. I do not want to do down that road myself and this book has show me that those negatives can be avoided by working on my personal fitness. I really liked the book.

Herbal Home Health CareThis is a wonderful book for parents who would like to use herbal remedies, but don't know where to start. Dr. Christopher's book is simple and interesting to read. He offers information on cause of disease and how to avoid it, wonderful information on nutrition, an alphabetical list of common childhood aliments with herbal remedies, and a section on how to's i.e. how to make an herbal tea, a fomentation, and a poltice and more. I love this book, I find myself turning to it time and time again!

I have used this book for myself and my family. It is a very helpful resource. I first borrowed it from a friend and then had to buy my own. It does not give the clearest instructions sometimes, but if you have any herbal experience, you can figure it out. I appreciate having a book that advises based on actual experience. This is not a regurgitation of some obscure, vague herbal info.

Good reading. It has a lot of treatments for different problems. I love his formulas, especially the tinctures and liquid extracts. However they are very expensive. It doesn't seem so since most bottles cost about $10 to $12 for about 50 capsules, but for just about every item you have to take 2 capsules three times a day. If you paid $12 for a bottle of 50 and took 6 a day the bottle would only last you about 8-1/2 days, so I only buy the formulas I feel I need the most. The book is great though and you can buy your own herbs online. I would definitely recommend the book.

The Thyroid Diet: Manage Your Metabolism for Lasting Weight Loss

The Thyroid Diet: Manage Your Metabolism for Lasting Weight LossI was extremely disappointed with this book. It is about how to know if you have hypothyroid, (why would you buy it if you didn't know) how to get doctors to give you the appropriate tests, and then how hard it is to loose weight if you are hypothyroid. I expected a book that described types of food or exercise that would be helpful for people who have hypothyroid. Instead, this author basically said,' Different diets work for different people, try Atkins, weight watchers, counting calories, whatever you think might work, and stick to whatever works for you'

Thanks for the tip! I never would have thought of that.

The bottom line is: Don't bother getting this book.

This is not a diet, it is an overview of all the other stuff Shomon has out. It is a recommendation of how to manage your thyroid, if you haven't read anything or are just finding out about a thyroid problem, it has lots of information, but if you have had thyroid problems and know about them, it is the same stuff you've always heard. I didn't learn anything new, and it really isn't a diet............is was disappointed. No new answers for those of us who are being treated with medication. If weight is a problem, as I have with thyroid problems, this is not the answer..........

Buy The Thyroid Diet: Manage Your Metabolism for Lasting Weight Loss Now

I really am glad I found Mary Shoman's "Thyroid Diet" book. I have been hypothyroid for a few years, and I never had a weight problem in the past. But the weight creeped up and by the time they diagnosed me, I had gained something like 40 pounds. (I never found out the final #, cause I wouldn't even look at the scale at my highest. UGH!) I felt awful, and I tried every single diet program out there, I did no-carb, I did low-fat, I did low-cal, and I just kept gaining weight, or I didn't lose anything.

It was ridiculous. My doctor said that my thyroid had nothing to do with anything, but I knew, I just KNEW that my thyroid had something to do with it, because, for goodness sake, I never had an extra pound on me until the thyroid problems started up and I started with hypothyroidism.

A friend of mine who is also hypothyroid told me that she had some success following some things she'd read from Mary Shoman at her website, and so I decided to get this book. It's been a real godsend, because for the first time in about 5 years, I've actually been consistently losing weight. First it was just a few pounds, really slow, but I LOST!!! I've started taking a couple of vitamins that she recommends, and I think that's helping too, but the overall diet is what's making the difference. I'm eating, but I finally feel like I'm eating the RIGHT things, and believe me, you can go spend 7 a week, or 20 a month, or 2000 a year at a local weight loss program, but if you don't lose weight and you tell them you have a thyroid problem, they're going to tell you you're not "doing the program right." And Shoman doesn't tell you that...she knows how the thyroid affects weight, and she explains it, she interviewed doctors who also talk about leptin, and metabolism, and the impact of thyroid on blood sugar, timing of food, and the best thyroid medicines and such...all things I think are what helped me sort of break the "losing streak" I had at weight loss! I even had a blood sugar test I read about in the book, and the doctor says I could be headed for pre-diabetes, so I definitely am doing the right thing by losing weight!

There is definitely no magic diet cure -wish there WAS!! - with a thyroid problem or otherwise, but I feel like with Thyroid Diet, I at least have a fighting chance to figure out what foods, calorie levels, supplements, and other sorts of approaches might actually make a difference for me.

I really recommend this book. I got it January of 2005, and as of April, I'm already down 20 pounds!!!

Can't argue with success, right? ;-)

I have had my copy of "The Thyroid Diet" for three weeks, and I've already lost a few pounds. But even better, I'm actually beginning to feel like I may finally have some control over this mess that I've been battling for a long time.

I gained about 25 pounds before I found out that I had a thyroid problem. (If I'd had some of this advice, I have a feeling I would have figured it out much sooner and saved myself major grief.)

I've been doing pretty much every sort of diet and not losing weight -I could scream- so I could totally relate to this book. I made a few of the changes suggested right way, I already felt less bloated, and felt my hunger level reduce (and I'm one of those people who has a really good appetite.) Now, if only I could actually start to do some exercise--not my favorite thing.

I'm really psyched about the ideas for supplements, and am going to start trying some of those, but i'm giving my body a chance to get used to the diet for a while before I start. Since I'm actually slowly losing right now, I don't want to mess things up and stop losing.

One thing is I wished that there were more recipes in the book. There are some really good recipes in here, but I could have used even more ideas. But the ones she has in here are good. I've made a few things from the book and they were delicious.

I'm getting a copy of this for my 2 sisters (I'm pretty sure one of them has a thyroid problem, and the other is gaining weight all of a sudden after being thin all her life). Like I said, I wish I'd had book this when I started blimping up a few years ago, and didn't know that my thyroid was totally messed up. Maybe I can save them some of the frustration I had.

I really think this is a helpful book, and recommend it to people who have thyroid problems, and people who are gaining weight fast and don't know why.

--Carina

Hair Culture

Hair CultureThis book was originally published in 1901 and is a true classic by the man who has been called the "father of physical culture."

Macfadden (1868-1955), the author, was a true "nature boy," helped launch the health consciousness which has become a major industry, and was an early advocate of natural means to better health and longevity. Considered a prophet by some and a self-promoting charlatan by others, he authored numerous books on health, nutrition, exercise, and natural healing.

This book, in my estimation, is one of his best. The style is somewhat rambling, but there is much useful information that is presented clearly without scientific jargon. The book is amply illustrated with photographs both of the author and of female models with long hair. The photographs are definitely from an earlier era.

Macfadden's method for restoring and/or maintaining healthy hair involved massaging the scalp, brushing the hair, and pulling the hair "to strengthen the roots." He also advocated a nutritious diet. He blamed hair loss on poor circulation to the hair roots. Eating the proper foods especially fruits and vegetables is vital to the health of the whole body including the hair.

In many ways, Macfadden was ahead of his time. Although his writing style has a kind of "homespun," amateur quality, the content is not to be dismissed.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the history of natural health and/or is interested in reading about some unique and interesting ways to have healthy hair.
