The Merck Manual of Medical Information: 2nd Home Edition (Merck Manual of Medical Information Home

The Merck Manual of Medical Information: 2nd Home EditionThis reference book is easy to use and understand. When I first leaned of this home edition version of the Merck manual I was hesitant. Over the years many books have been published that are medical in nature, some published by doctors, but the content is watered down or so vague that a layperson doesn't derive much information from it. Some books are actually condescending in attitude, some patronizing. So many books briefly skim symptoms and then caution to call a physician for more information.

My son was diagnosed on the phone by our pediatrician with chicken pox and it was made clear that they did not want to see him for a physical exam. I was given a tiny bit of information by the office staff but was still curious for more information. I spent over an hour surfing the Internet looking for information but found watered down information, repeated many times over on multiple websites, including some written by physicians intended for laypeople to use. I looked at my parenting books written by doctors (one titled "The Portable Pediatrician") and was still lacking any substantial information.

But when I consulted the Merck Manual home edition, (which I had forgotten I bought recently and had not yet used), I was surprised at the level of information given. There are many details that I had not found elsewhere, such as number of days from exposure to outbreak, how long it takes the pox to change from first appearance to crusted over, about how long the infection lasts, and treatment suggestions. Reasons why some children have a mild outbreak vs. a severe outbreak were even provided, something I had not found anywhere else.

The information here is not dumbed down in that it is not so vague that it is not useful. There is a lot of information here but it is written in a style for the layperson to understand. I appreciated the writing style, which presents information to the non-physician without putting on airs.

Anyone who, like me, prefers to gather information and learn about things rather than making a call or office visit to their doctor to get just one opinion will appreciate owning this book. At about 1500 pages it covers many illnesses and ailments. If you are interested in this book I suggest you buy it so that you have it at your fingertips 24 hours a day, for whatever may arise. I am not suggesting this take the place of a doctor, but I know from working with physicians that there are certain calls that are non-emergent in nature that are not appreciated when the office is closed!

Note: I write this review in 6/2002 and don't know why the review never appeared here. I am resubmitting it over three years later. I have been using this book regularly since I wrote this review for many ailments and it has never disappointed me. I am still very happy with it.

I am a physician working in the Northwest, and I own this book. I purchased it when I was in medical school and used it as a primer to get a plain English explaination of most common diseases. It is up to date, and far more accurate and unbiased compared to information you might find through google. I have no idea why it costs only $14, as medical textbooks of it's size usually cost five times as much.

In referance to the previous reviewer's statment, please don't every buy Gray's Anatomy. Few medical schools in the last half century have used it. Try Netter's Guide to Anatomy if you'd really like a good Anatomy book -that is the gold standard.

This review is for the paperback 2nd Home Edition pusblished May 2004.

If you, family members, or friends have some kind of physicial discomfort or illness, chances are this book has an explantion and a solution for it! Written for people that have no particular medical understanding whatsoever. The explanations are extremely detailed, and some section have illustrations and diagrams for performing emergency procedures. Over 1,767 pages of valuable information for an incredible price of $7.99, wow! If Gray's Anatomy is considered as de facto for people in biology/medical fields, then this book is the bible for how to correctly apply those knowledges to save life.

I'm an RN student and ordered this book along with the "real" Merck Manual. While I would highly recommend this for people without much clinical background, I would strongly recommend that an RN student save their money. I've opened this book once since I bought it and I'll be giving it away to a family member. Not that the information contained in it isn't great, but I can get much more information out of my Merck Manual so I don't even waste time picking this book up. If you're a student or professional in a clinical setting looking for a book to quickly reference pathophys in, then skip this book altogether and just get the Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy. However, if this book is intended for someone not in the medical profession, then by all means, this is the book to have.

The Hospice Choice: In Pursuit of a Peaceful Death

The Hospice Choice: In Pursuit of a Peaceful DeathI found this book educational and easy to read. It provides a very clear picture of hospice and palliative care to the layperson. I wish that more physicians and their staff would read books like this so they could better prepare patients and their families for hospice care. I also wish I had read it before my mother died because I would have known better questions to ask our hospice and perhaps would have received better care for mom, myself and the rest of the family.

Great book, and a necessary readespecially for those of us living in death-fearing cultures. Having been a hospice volunteer for 13 years, I've seen a dramatic difference in end-of-life care when patients, their families, and their medical caregivers are educated on the hospice philosophy. It's a beautiful stage of life, the dying process, when handled with the respect every other stage of life deserves.

Great book for everyone. Everyone has to deal with death, unless they die extremely young. M. Lattanzi-Licht covers many difficult senarios of death and dying. On p.179 Lattanze-Licht says,"This reality is intensified when the child is caring for a dying parent and feels confounded by the magnitude of the tasks". Get the book and read more!!!

The Living Beauty Detox Program: The Revolutionary Diet for Each and Every Season of a Woman's Life

The Living Beauty Detox Program: The Revolutionary Diet for Each and Every Season of a Woman's LifeI read The Living Beauty Detox Program and began the outlined programs approximately two months ago. I start every day with the "Living Beauty Elixer" and fiber cleanse supplement recommended in the book. This book establishes specific detox and diet programs for every season as well as an overall system detox called the Fat Flush. This program has been extremely successful for me and I continue to feel better every day without any major detoxification side effects! The Living Beauty Detox Program is an excellent read and is complete in its recommendations and how-tos. A definite MUST READ for anyone concerned with their well-being and overall health.

The Living Beauty Detox Program has encouraged me to look at ways I can take steps to feel better and enjoy life. After being on the spring detox program, my hair looks better, I've lost weight (in the right places) and my skin looks great. Ann Louise has done a superb job of making sense out of how we can feel young and youthful again. Thank you Ann Louise! I can't tell you what a difference this book has made in my life.

This book is packed with information that every woman regardless of her age will want--and need--to know. There are easy-to-understand insights on how estrogen mimics affect our health and how many of the things we do and take add to the problem--and most importantly, destroy our beauty. I found the detox diet and beauty routines so helpful I'm giving both of my daughters the book as a present.

I read this book at about the same time as Ann Louise Gittleman's "Fat Flush Plan," and both books were very similar, and very effective. Ms. Gittleman takes the time to explain in layman's language how food is used by the body.

The fact that she breaks things down by seasons adds a little variety. Good detail is provided on what to eat to achieve better health and especially how to detoxify your poor body.

I have given this book as a gift, it was so helpful.

Fitness Weight Training - 2nd Edition (Fitness Spectrum Series)

Fitness Weight Training - 2nd EditionI was looking for a book that would lead me step by step through a program for toning and weight loss. This book has it all. Instructions, starting points for weight on each exercise, suggestions of warm up and cool down, etc. There are three main programs outlined in the book, one for toning, one for strength training and one for body building. There is also a detailed section on how to set up your own weight training program.

I bought this book because I wanted a program to follow without paying for a personal trainer. It works! I was an absolute beginner and have been at it now for about 30 weeks the results are great.

This book is superb for anyone who is considering weight training for fitness. The different spectrum levels guide you through workouts geared to the level of YOUR athletic ability, from absolute beginner to seasoned athlete. The book offers clear instructions on how to perform the suggested exercises without becoming overly technical. It gives you what you need to know, and not too much more. The section on designing your own workout is worth the price of the book.

This is the most helpful book I have found for advice on locating or constructing a weight lifting program to meet your goals. The authors are obviously experts because their advice is backed with reason and covers a wide spectrum of needs just what you expect from consultants who know both theory and practice of their field. Whether you are a beginner or advanced lifter, young or old, this book will put you on a progression of good programs for a very long time.

The book helps you assess your current readiness for weight lifting, and encourages you to think about your goals as being in one of three areas: muscle toning, body shaping, or strength building. Of course there is overlap between these since any program will accomplish some of these elements, but it is a matter of emphasis in the program you will follow. Then the book has nice color coded charts for 6 different zones which are basically your starting experience level for any one of the three goals. There are also alternate week and month ideas to really help you get the most time out of these plans. The recommended programs usually last one month and then encourage you to switch to another for continued progress. Most programs introduce slight variations at week 3 as well. There are 2, 3 and 4 day a week programs depending upon your goal and experience (color zone).

There are lots of charts and helpful calendars, etc. You can copy the charts to track your progress. By using these tools you can learn more about how to design your own programs and the authors talk you through that as well.

It is important to know what this book is not. It is not a detailed exercise manual showing lots of different exercises and their variations. There is an exercise appendix so if this were your only book, you could do the programs, but exercise details are not the emphasis of this book. Nor is nutrition, or detailed anatomy diagrams both are mentioned briefly.

This is a great book of sound weight lifting programs for most of us. I say most of us, because expert body builders will probably find most of this book too easy or obvious for their needs. But for most of us it represents a tremendously helpful set of programs and ideas to get us from wherever we are to being more advanced lifters.

i got this book because I have some experience lifting weights, but I wanted a program to follow. this book is very good it has programs that you can use and you can start working out very quickly. If someone is very, very experienced, then this is not the book you are looking for. however, for most people out there who aren't semi-pros, this book will be fine.
