Midwifery and Childbirth in America

Midwifery and Childbirth in AmericaJudith Pence Rooks has written the best book available in the subject of Midwifery. It is a complete history, and is extremely well-written. It includes a comprehensive bibliography. For those of us who have had multiple home-births it is an invaluable resource. This will doubtless be the standard reference for years to come. We hope it will encourage the home-birth movement, and the use of mid-wives, as a safer alternative to physicians, in the United States.

good review of midwifery as it started in america. has the essentials needed for classroom knowledge where to begin and end your research.

Beautiful Black Hair: Real Solutions to Real Problems--A Step by Step Instructional Guide

Beautiful Black Hair: Real Solutions to Real Problems--A Step by Step Instructional GuideI was surfing the net for a hair care book that would help me with my hair problems. I read the reviews for Beautiful Black Hair and ordered it. My hair was dry, brittle, and thinning in spots. I read Shamboosie's book and was so impressed with the information that it provided, it was hard to put it down. I finished it in one day. I ran out and purchased the products he recommended that same night and he is absolutely correct, the right products make a world of difference. I followed the formula's he recommended and saw results after the second treatment. My hair looks and feels so much better. He knocks no-lye relaxers and that's okay because I don't use it anyway. However, I do know people with very beautiful healthy hair that does. As he points out, the key to a great head of hair is conditioner, conditioner, conditioner. Definitely one of the best hair care books on the market especially for women or men with flat cell (kinky) hair.

I read this book completely in one night. (which is very different for me.) The book jumps all over the place with the advise. Kind of repetitive at times, but I guess he just wants us to remember key points. I agree with some of the points, but some of his advise, I find a little questionable. He stresses use of lye relaxers which I agree with, but he only recommends one. He recommends a few expensive brand products and poos other brands. Outside of the model on the cover, the other pictures of his clients hair is not all that great. They look very average and they have thin whispy looking hair. I tried his method against my better judgement. [After spending a bit of money,] my hair doesn't look any better than it did before. I hope by the time I have used all this expensive stuff I will have noticed some difference. I had to buy the Dudley creme' online through the company. I couldn't find it locally. I gave it 3 stars because he does give some great info on how hair is broken down, relaxers and heat protection.

Shamboosie is the ONLY hairdresser on the planet that I allow to touch my hair. This is not an exaggeration. The man knows what he's talking about and what he's doing.

I loved this book. Before I read it, no matter how hard I tried, my hair would break off when it reached 4 inches in length. I asked myself if it could be true that most of the blame was in the "no-lye" relaxers and the wrong products.

You can take it from me...everything he says in this book is true. (And I wasn't totally convinced until my hair grew so long that it reached the middle of my back)

My hair looked GORGEOUS in the Mrs. America Pageant. (I was Mrs. New Jersey)

Do yourself a favor and buy this book for yourself and anyone you know and love who's tired of wasting money on weaves, curling irons, grease and the other tools of the trade. It'll be the best investment you've ever made in your appearance.

See my hair for yourself: Look at the back of the cover of my new book PRAYERS FOR THE WORKING MOM: 7 SECRETS TO PHENOMENAL SUCCESS.

That's really my hair!

No weaves.

Absolutely no "no-lye".

No inferior products in my house, let alone my hair.

And the hair grows and grows.

I ordered the Beautiful Black Hair book, as part of an free offer for enrolling in a book club. I was very doubtful about the promises of having longer, stronger, healthier hair with following Shamboosie's program. I purchased the suggested products and followed the conditioning program every four days. Within three weeks, I noticed a great difference in my hair. The first thing a I noticed, was my hair not shedding or falling out every time I combed it. My hair appeared softer and had a shine to it. I was so surprised!! I actually bought a product that does what it promises to do. I am sold. I have been following this program for three months. My hair is stronger, looks very healthy and is easier to manage. I receive positive comments from peers and family about the condition of my hair. Shamboosie's book is easy to read and follow. He gives real solutions, and a step by step guide towards achieving your goal. This book was very helpful and informative to me. It enlightened me on all the damage I had been doing to my hair all these years. I want to thank Shamboosie for this book, and making it available to all black women. GREAT BOOK!!

First, I have to point out Shamboosie's belief of no-lye relaxers. I know many of us can join the No-Lye Relaxer Club: "Hi my name is ____ and I have used a No-Lye Relaxer." I have used lye relaxers in the past, and before receiving this book I made the mistake of using the No-Lye Touch Up kit on the market. After reading Shamboosie's book, I now understand why I was experiencing dryness and itching that I wasn't prior to using the no-lye touch up., Like other reveiwers I was debating between Shamboosie's book or Ms. Howse's book. I think this book was a MUCH better buy. I read Ms. Howse's review of Shamboosie's book @ http://www.ubhpublications.com/PDFs/BBH.pdf and just quickly let me point out her negative flaws of this book and my opinion:

She mentioned that she didn't agree with Shamboosie reccommending Nexxus products because they are not for black hair. Maybe she sees Nexxus as a "non-ethnic" product However, as Shamboosie mentioned in his book. It's not whether the product is ethnic or not, it's the highquality ingredients that matters. I agree.

She focused intensely on the fact that we should use no-lye relaxers and it won't hurt us. However, on her site she says she uses Affirm Relaxers, I thought Affirm was a professional slaon relaxer containing lye??

I'm not saying that Ms. Howse is not correct in her findings and I'm not saying that Shamboosie is completely correct in everything he suggests. But his book is on point and has chapters on everything concerning our hair. He includes step by step instructions, product reccomendations, and a breakdown of each item that we put on our hair. I truly believe that with this book, you can grow the hair that you are losing or have lost due to improper care. I'm taking his suggestions to heart, and I'm sure that I will benefit from it.

First Aid, CPR and AED Advanced

First Aid, CPR and AED AdvancedBuy this book not only because of a recommendation from your course and/or teacher, but your need for a reference book on the subject. God speed. This book is a subject matter expert, in my opinion. It contains visual diagrams of human anatomy, photos people in accidents, and study photos of first responders providing the steps and skills needed for first aid, cpr and aed. What more do you need? It has very good balance between written text and diagrams. This book also has taken enourmous to provide the STEPS in prioritizing first aid, cpr and aed. Flow charts asking What IF questions, and paths to follow for various senarios. Nothing is ever straight forward, and this book prepares you to think that way. Wow, humm? The quizes at end of each reading provides as a strong learning tool for students. So, you cannot take this book lightly. The authors have made it a crusade in providing such information. Readers are to benefit from the knowledge, and victims you save, well ... God Willing, you will see the light!!! The use of color coded descriptive text also adds to the ease of learning. All of which are needed, because its contents are handled with utmost superior quality and attention. Should ah/Could ah/Do It No!! Buy with the intension to read this, close to your heart!! Again, God Speed.

I'm giving it four stars because I already have extensive medical knowledge. Taking a certification course requires one to give

"textbook" answers and in this case, injured/ill people will not be textbook patients. I aced the course and some of the material in the book I found was misleading. It's not the wrong information, just different from what I would do. It was required for a course for my major, but eventually found that I didn't need it. It teaches basic CPR, wound treatments, poison, animal/insect/marine injures, etc. Lots of knowledge for someone looking to get basic treatment knowledge. I don't know if it can be used to study for the American Heart Associatons tests for CPR.

The New Yoga for People Over 50: A Comprehensive Guide for Midlife and Older Beginners

The New Yoga for People Over 50: A Comprehensive Guide for Midlife and Older BeginnersMy aunt (a flourishing over-50 yoga devotee) recently sent me (a very stiff 33-year old beginner) a copy of Suza Francina's marvelous book, The New Yoga for People Over 50. I previously acquired Mira Mehta's authoritative How to Use Yoga, which I find quite instructive and aspire to begin using (yoga isn't as easy as it looks, folks!). However, I don't believe anything could inspire me as much as seeing and reading the testimonials of so many over-50 yoga practitioners in Francina's book; their execution of some of the more challenging postures is absolutely mind-altering!

Francina's book and her work in general are truly a blessing. Bolstered by the knowledge The New Yoga for People Over 50 has given me I have begun "converting" my mother, who frequents the weight machines at the gym. She is a fit and vibrant 54-year old, but her hectic lifestyle, which includes a six-day work week (she owns a business) needs the addition of yoga to ensure her health and longevity.

This book is a wonderful, invaluable tool for everyone, regardless of age. I hope to catch up with Francina's octogenarian students within a few years! With Francina and her students as examples, I expect I will do just that and anyone who reads this book will be motivated to set a similar goal: feel better and live longer with yoga!

After recently reading Amazon review by "More hype than hope", I would like to counter her negative opinion with a few positive thoughts on "The New Yoga for People Over 50" by Suza Francina.

I first read this book (and subsequently reviewed it) in 1999. My enthusiasm has not waned. This, to me, was and is the most common sense yoga book I have ever read.

Its purpose is to inform the reader about various issues affecting those over 50 and the ways yoga can help. It is a serious and helpful resource for older students and teachers who instruct seniors. The "success stories" (term used by reviewer) are meant to inspire and encourage and do not include any specifically by the author (to glorify herself as suggested by the reviewer).

Yoga classes are not "elitist" (term used by reviewer). They are commonplace in many locations and range from YMCA, gyms, senior centers, etc. Additionally, many yoga studios offer instruction for all ages and levels of ability, from beginner to advanced.

I still feel this book is an inspiration to learn and practice yoga. The models are real people, over 50, which in itself is an incentive. While some are longtime practitioners and famous teachers (like BKS Iyengar who wrote the foreward), many began yoga while in their 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's. Perhaps someday "More hype" will meet Ms. Francina in person. She is an empowering teacher as well as a talented author.

This book has made a difference in my life! I have read several yoga books, but "The New Yoga for People Over 50" by Suza Francina spoke to my special needs. If you are seeking answers for questions relating to menopause, osteoporosis, healthy heart, etc., seek no more. This book provides answers. Her chapter on feet and knees is extremely helpful, providing the groundwork for specific needs. I keep this book handy as an excellent reference manual, both for myself and my friends. Additionally, this book is an inspiration to learn and practice yoga. The models are real and most are definitely over 50 years old. This in itself is an incentive. When you see people in their 70's and 80's, you are encouraged that you, too, can do yoga well into your "golden" years. After reading her book, I was excited to learn that I am close enough to Ojai (an hour's drive but well worth it) to take classes by Suza. She is an empowering teacher as well as a talented author. If you cannot attend a class, "The New Yoga for People Over 50" will more than suffice. Buy more than one; you'll want to share with a friend. Enjoy!

After more than 30 years of teaching therapeutic exercise and Yoga for older adults, and having written a book for instructors (Seniors On The Move, published by Human Kinetics), I truly appreciate Suza's book, the New Yoga for People over 50. Both for students and for instructors, it's one of the most helpful and realistic guides for older adults I have seen in all these years. It addresses so many basic and critical issues related to aging and gives a very hopeful picture: the choice of REgeneration over DEgeneration, no matter what the age or present physical condition. I know how much work it is to write a book, how much sitting it requires, and respect and congratulate Suza for writing it! Even though no book can replace a good class, this book serves as a great inspiration and offers so much insight and education. Renate Rikkers, Exercise & Yoga Therapist. Author, Seniors On The Move

Beginners beware. I have been an enthusiastic yoga practitioner for 20 years and purchased this for an older friend. I had not read it but thought this would be good for the friend, a beginner with a sensitive back. She returned it to me in bafflement. On examination of the book, I understood her confusion and was disturbed by the content. Breathing, the cornerstone of the yoga discipline, is an afterthought. The poses demonstrated in the photos are not at all for the beginner, and some are positively unsafe for beginners to attempt, particularly those with lumbar or cervical injuries. This book is full of "success stories", particularly those of the author, who seems positively enchanted with herself. I understand the application of yoga for those over 50, but a different work is needed for beginners, with practical tips for home practice. Not everyone can afford, or has access to, a personal yoga instructor/studio, yet the book is based on this elitist assumption. I am left with the impression that the author is merely interested in promoting herself and her career as an instructor, rather than the well-being of older people hoping to improve their health and reap the benefits of this wonderful discipline, which a proper yoga guide would have as its focus. A pity.

Here's the book on this topic I WOULD recommend, and ultimately selected for my friend: Yoga for 50+: Modified Poses and Techniques for a Safe Practice, by Richard Rosen and Robert Holmes. As the title suggests, it is appropriate for all health concerns, suitable for beginners, with clear instructions and photos, and lacking Ms. Francisca's self-congratulatory hype and granola aura. Yoga for grown-ups. My friend is very happy with it and well on her way.

Loving Someone Who Has Dementia: How to Find Hope while Coping with Stress and Grief

Loving Someone Who Has Dementia: How to Find Hope while Coping with Stress and GriefReviewer Richard Blake wrote "Pauline Boss writes with authority, conviction, and compassion. "Loving Someone Who Has Dementia: How to Find Hope while Coping with Stress and Grief" will be a welcome addition to the resource shelf of individual and professional caregivers, family members, counselors, and clergy. Dr. Boss introduces a whole new concept of managing caregiver stress and grief."

That pretty much says it all. (And makes a tough act to follow! A tip of the hat to you, Richard.)

We all think we're familiar with dementia until it strikes someone close to us. Then we find out "the hard way" that of all the terrible illnesses that can befall us, this one is as close to pure cruelty as it can get.

While nothing can completely prepare us for "stress and grief" that accompanies dementia, "Loving Someone..." is a GREAT place to start because it's written specifically for you and me the caregivers rather than as a "textbook" discussion of this horrendous disease.

I found it to be well-written, insightful, wise and compassionate. In fairness (considering that at the time of this writing there are two "scathing" one-star reviews)I'm compelled to mention that an immediate family member has just been "officially" diagnosed by two doctors (i.e. "second opinion") and this is the FIRST AND ONLY book I've read so far. On the other hand, we've purchased a total of five copies between family members, and we've all found it to be immensely helpful at this early stage. I don't think any one book can cover this topic "from A-to-Z". As reviewer Blake said, it "will be a welcome addition to the resource shelf..." I agree, except that I'd consider it a good STARTING POINT, and that the additions follow as needed!

I recommend it without reservation.

This book doesn't tell you how to get your Dad to take a shower. It doesn't tell you how to take the car keys away from your mother. It doesn't tell you when it's time for assisted living or nursing home care. Instead, it tells you how not to go crazy right along with your loved one. Actually, it helps you understand that you aren't crazy -the conflicting emotions you're feeling are normal.

The tone of this book is a bit medical and formal at times, but not so much that a tired mom caring for her aging mother-in-law with alzheimers can't read it. I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed at first that this book wasn't going to help us figure out the issue of the car keys and assisted living, but I was wrong. I was wrong to not put value on reading about my emotions, my husband's emotions, and our mental health as caregivers.

Two of my favorite chapters included the chapter on Family Rituals, Celebrations, and Gatherings as well as the chapter outlining Seven Guidelines for the Journey. As the holidays are approaching and we're trying to figure out how to adapt them yet again for my mother-in-law's increasing confusion, I needed to read that. And with a recent increase in her care needs, I also needed to read the seven guidelines for the journey. Because it is a journey ... a long and tiring journey. But Pauline Boss helped me see the benefits of the journey again.

This is a fantastic book. I wish that it had been available when my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease several years ago. I am giving my copy to a friend who, after reading it immediately, will mail it to another friend whose mother has just been diagnosed with this horrendous disease. Dr. Boss' emphasis is on the caregiver rather than the patient and what the caregiver can do in order to be both more effective ("isolation leads to higher burden and depression for caregivers--and in turn, this leads to more behavioral problems in the person who has dementia") and survive with his/her own life intact. The author gives a sobering statistic: "caregivers die at a rate 3 percent higher than people the same age who are not caring for someone with dementia."

Dr. Boss uses the words "ambiguous loss," over and over to describe when your loved one is here but isn't here and you are faced with an imperfect relationship that is not the way it once was, it never will be that way again and it will get even worse. One thing you can do to make things better for everyone involved is to continue with family rituals: celebrating birthdays, weddings, graduations, Thanksgiving and religious holidays as well. She also discusses the difference between depression and grief, reminding us that all too often professionals see a caregiver as being depressed she/he is actually experiencing extended grieving and is sad, a perfectly normal phenomenon for someone whose loved one is slipping away with dementia.

The author, to her everlasting credit, debunks the myth of that awful word "closure," which she points out has been done to death by pop psychologists and television reporters. In our society where everything should be easily cut and dried, we are supposed to get over everything and get on with our neat lives. She points out--and gives example after example--that that is not the way of the world, particularly when it comes to caring for someone with dementia. The latest studies on the subject indicate that we can live more easily with grief if we do not try so hard to get over it and that dementia teaches us that grief's door is never completely shut. (The great American poet Emily Dickinson, whose poem on hope Dr. Boss quotes, may have had that door of grief in mind when she said that sorrow has its own season.)

The author emphasizes that the caregiver should avoid isolation at all costs and seek out what she calls his/her psychological family--those persons you have created in your heart and mind as your family--as well as doing something for yourself on a regular basis, whether it be going to a museum or a movie, reading a book or poetry, engaging in physical exercise, playing cards one night a week with friends, going out to dinner, whatever will make your life easier and relieve your stressful situation.

Dr. Boss also includes a list of warning signs you should look for if you are in need of professional help while being a caregiver and suggests that you not use the professional who is caring for the person with dementia but rather see someone else. She encourages us to just do the best we can do, that hope lives in understanding that we are doing the best we can do, to remember that there should be no stigma associated with dementia, that this disease is not anyone's fault, and to remember that life isn't always fair.

This writer, a psychotherapist now in her 70's, is obviously someone full of a lifetime of wisdom. I came away from this book convinced that Dr. Boss is a wonderful practitioner. Had I had any doubts, I would have been sold when I got to the passage about her father who came to the United States in 1929 from Switzerland. Although he loved his adopted country, he carried for the rest of his life a photograph hidden in a secret compartment of his billfold of his hometown, Burgdorf, Switzerland. You can feel Dr. Boss' deep love for her father as she describes finding this photograph after her father's death. She uses his situation to illustrate our two families, the one present and the other, the one we hold in our "hearts and minds." We can keep those we love who are out of reach forever with us in other ways.

If you are taking care of someone with dementia or know someone who is--and most of us unfortunately do--this book, written in accessible language for the ordinary reader rather than professionals, has page after page of lifesaving advice and help. It concludes with a long list of available resources.

Highly recommended.

This book is flowing and clear, and reads as though the author were in the room speaking her words. It really touches the heart of the matter, the reality of loving someone who is there, but not really (or not constantly). It affirms the scope of the matter of being in relationship with someone who in some way is missing, and in the case of dementia, someone who remains with you, in ... odd and diminished relationship, requiring often the care given to that of a very young child. I found the book very moving, comforting, and useful (my Mother has a moderate form of dementia), and have already given copies of it to family members.

Ambiguous loss. This is the term Pauline Boss uses to describe Dementia. She hit the nail on the head! My Mother in Law was diagnosed several years ago with this cruel disease and has progressively drifted further and further away from us.

Reading through this book I felt as though I was sitting with someone that has been down this road and understands just how the disease effects everyone in the family. I've read and reread passages and now keep it close by. Its helpful to re-read a few pages on those difficult days when you feel no one understands. Thank you Ms. Boss.

Gorgeous Wedding Hairstyles: A Step-by-Step Guide to 34 Spectacular Hairstyles

Gorgeous Wedding Hairstyles: A Step-by-Step Guide to 34 Spectacular HairstylesAs stated in the above review, the syles are great and the pictures helpful, but there are no styles for short or even medium-length hair.

I'm a makeup artist who is looking to learn to do bridal hair. This book has nice step by step pictures of how to create many elegant hairstyles for weddings. The only thing I found that I didn't particularly like is that many of the hairstyles are very "model" like meaning, good for photo shoots but not something that MOST regular bride would want... meaning, popular bridal updos. However, it does give you some nice tips. This would be a good book if you know the basic techniques of bridal updos and want to learn some more "artistic" hairstyles for professional photo shoots. Some of the hairstyles are too "high fashion" or "avant gard" for your regular brides.
