The Soapmaker's Companion: A Comprehensive Guide with Recipes, Techniques & Know-How (Natural Body S

The Soapmaker's Companion: A Comprehensive Guide with Recipes, Techniques & Know-HowIf you are a beginning soapmaker, there is no other book you should buy. Other books have helpful information; this book, however, compiles all the information you need into one helpful guide. It has frequently asked questions, lists properties of oils, discusses colorants and scents, and explains the chemical process that occurs. If you have never made soap before, it is an incredibly useful guide.

I have read some of the criticisms in the other reviews, and I must disagree with some of them. I did not find most of her recipes to be unduly expensive to make; those that are can easily be avoided by the soapmaker on a budget. Furthermore, I rarely use the recipe section of the book; I use her formulas and the other information she provides to construct my own recipes instead. Also, I disagree that a 10% fat discount (which she typically recommends) is way too much. Some people choose to use a lesser fat discount, and that is fine; for the beginning soapmaker, I think it might be better to provide more of a margin of safety. Once you are more experienced, you can experiment with lowering the fat discount if that's what you prefer.

Really, a beginning soapmaker cannot do better than this book. It compiles all the information you need. Once you are more experienced, you will do well to explore other sources of information (there are some good resources on the Internet, and some other decent soapmaking books as well), but if you are a beginner, Cavitch is definitely the place to start.

I bought this book years ago, when I first started making soap. It has a wealth of good reference information on different oils, colorants, additives, etc., information that I still refer to occasionally. Unfortunately it's usefulness as a guide is somewhat limited by several things:

1) She is biased against the use of any ingredients of animal origin, especially animal fats. No coverage of the use of animal fats in soap is given at all, and her only excuse is lame, not backed up by any actual science, and demonstrably untrue.

2) Her recipes are too large, are overly complicated, and way too superfatted. Plus she recommends the use of GSE, an ingredient whose use as a preservative has been thoroughly discredited.

3) Some of her warnings/cautions are odd, to say the least. Her paranoia of clay, for one, is downright bizarre. Her admonition against pouring raw soap down the drain, in the event of a ruined batch, is utterly nonsensical.

4) The chapter on the chemistry of soap making is too much. She tries to go so in-depth that she's obviously in over her head, to the point that I was embarassed for her when I read it. The information here that would be useful/interesting to soap makers could have been condensed to a couple of pages.

5) She only covers cold process, and then, only cold process where the ingredients are combined at higher temperatures. There's no excuse for only covering the cold process in a "comprehensive" guide, but the fact that she only gives one basic cold process method may be an artifact of the next problem...

6) This book is dated. I started making soap around 2000, and even then people were using stick (aka immersion) blenders to mix their soap. There's no mention of stick blenders at all in this book, and that's a HUGE ommission. There's also no mention of alternative cold process techniques that are very mainstream today; e.g. discount water cold process, and room temperature cold process.

The bottom line is that there are a number of other books on the market that contain much more up-to-date soap making information than this one, not to mention all of the resources available on the internet. This book is still worth checking out, but don't expect it to be what it claims to be.

This is a great book for beginners, with a lot of neat tips and tricks and some fabulous recipes.

The lack of photos are a definite drawback, but the book does have illustrations, for what it's worth. The author also has some definite bias against certain methods (she doesn't like rebatching, and she doesn't encourage readers to use a freezer to unmold soaps), and it's good to keep an open mind when you read this. But then, Ms. (Mrs.?) Cavitch herself would probably encourage you to try things for yourself rather than just taking her word for it; you get that sense of personality from her writing.

I have found that the batches in this book are VERY big, and I have cut them down myself and found them to take a LOOOOONG time to trace (upwards to an hour or more). I'm not sure if this is just my lack of experience or her recipes; since I use an electric mixer it's not that much of a problem to me, but it would be to someone mixing their soap by hand.

This is an excellent book for beginners who want to learn how to make vegetable-based soaps. I will say, however, that you should be mindful that her recipes are probably more expensive than other books prescribe; after buying the specialized oils (coconut, palm, olive) and essential oils, plus the electric mixer, you will definitely have spent a lot of money. But if making non-animal-fat based soaps is worth it to you, by all means -buy this book.

Many of the recipes Cavitch gives call for a lot of hard to find and expensive oils, which can discourage new soapmakers.

She also superfats too much, and I also think that can misinform newbies.

Her descriptions of oils and their properties are really helpful, but she doesn't describe using a stick blender at all (only a regular blender).

Good for reference, but definitely should not be used as a soap making bible. I found Kathy Miller's site much more helpful, more informative, and much more realistic for today's soapmaker.

This book is the staple of so many soapmakers. It covers many aspects of soapmaking. I particularly like the trouble shooting guide, in case I come up with something that looks unfamiliar. I just look it up and find out what I should do with the soap.

I like her recipes too. Her Hempsters Delight is a favorite of my customers.

One point though. As a seasoned soapmaker, you must do your own lye calculations. There are several good lye calculators on the web. There's always a chance for a misprint in a book or anothers recipe. Just type "lye calulator" into a search engine.

This book is the standard Bible to most soapmakers. I refer to my copy often.

The Down's Syndrome Handbook: A Practical Guide for Parents and Carers

The Down's Syndrome Handbook: A Practical Guide for Parents and CarersInformative, easy-to-read book that provides not only a broad overview of DS, coupled with practical advice, but also explains the biological specifics, which I found fascinating. I appreciate Newton's explanations of many of the "whys" behind the physical traits of DS. And I found comfort in knowing that this book was not just written by some doctor who has studied DS but it was authored by a doctor who is also the father of a child with DS. Who better?

Dining Lean - how to eat healthy when you're not at home

Dining Lean - how to eat healthy when you're not at homeEveryone needs to own Dining Lean!!! It is the best Dining Guide on the planet!!! Being over-weight most of my life and on every diet known to man I have struggled with knowing how to eat out, know what true portions look like and how to properly track what I'm eating. This is a must have! This book teaches you so much! I now have confidence in knowing how to order my food in a restaurant and be confident of not blowing my weight-loss plan. I also love the fact that this book shows the calories, fats, saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, sodium, carbs and fiber! You really know what you are getting when eating out! Every one watching their weight needs this book! Get it! Thank you Dr. Jo!

I am very disappointed in this book. It was hyped in our local newspaper and I immediately ordered it from the author's website. According to our paper and the website you can find out the fat content and fiber content of foods from many restaurants and it said it included Outback, Cheesecake Factory and Olive Garden to name a few. I got the book today and immediately turned to Outback to see how my favorite menu items fared as I am following Weight Watchers. I was sorely disappointed to find out that "No nutritional information is available." It suggests grilled shrimp, omit the butter, steamed vegetables; all of which I already knew. It lists "Limited nutritional info available" for Olive Garden and only lists a few lunch time items. As for Cheesecake Factory it states they offer "Weight Management Salads" each under 590 calories. That is already listed on the menu in the restaurant. Again, nothing new to learn here. It goes into detail for places like McDonalds and Burger King. Anyone who is a member of Weight Watchers has access to the fat and fiber content of their prepared foods already from materials available from Weight Watchers. This book was a waste of my hard earned money. It is definitely a case of "let the BUYER BEWARE"!

This is a must-have for anyone who eats out! Whether you are watching your weight, carbohydrate intake, sodium or fat, this book will help you learn how to walk into any restaurant with confidence.

Dr. Jo starts with the basics, then moves onto general guidelines for what the reader should pay attention to when dining out. The most memorable tip is advising readers to just cut 10 calories a day if they want to lose a pound in a year! Granted, this isn't a lot of weight loss, but just the knowledge that if you ADD a simple 10 calories a day to your diet, you will have GAINED a pound in the next year might help you see how simple it is to cut out 10, 50, maybe even 100 calories and lose TEN pounds in a year!

Dr Jo then moves onto tips for meals, giving suggestions on how to order a healthy breakfast, then offers points to consider when eating American style dinners, and finally breaks down various ethnic cuisines, showing what to watch out for, what to order, and how to stick with your goals while eating at Middle Eastern, Asian, or Mexican restaurants, to name a few.

The final section of the book is a listing of about 5,000 specific menu items for nearly 70 different facilities.

What I like most about the book: Readers can actually see the size of ½ cup of pasta, or what the difference is between a one ounce and a four once bagel. I also like the `calorimeters', charts that show choices from lowest fat and calories to highest choices. Finally, the details for the ethnic restaurants are much better than I have ever seen in other books offering similar information. A great resource!

Making Plant Medicine

Making Plant MedicineCech writes a book I've been waiting for something truly in depth that talks about tinctures in more than just a paragraph or so. While saying it's perfectly fine to make tinctures in the 'simplers manner' and he explains how to do this his reasons for making consistent batches with measurements for continued accuracy and control makes perfect sense. He brings up the merits many herbalists do regarding the benefits of alcohol as a medium besides preserving the herbal properties better than other products in nature, besides working better to extract from most herbs over glycerine and ACV, and besides bringing up how alcohol is such a wonderful carrier of herbs or other substances through the bloodstream into the body, he brings up the important points on how little of alcohol is consumed when taking the standard tincture dose, and eases some common misconceptions. Several chapters are devoted to tinctures alone, through various ways of extracting, detailed information on straining, pressing, and sifting. Things I've never read anywhere else were in here, quite a treat considering all the herbals I've read out there.

But of course that's not all. Full chapters are devoted to glycerites and which herbs are best suited for them, Vinegar extracts, Teas and Decoctions, Herbal Syrups and Succi, Oils, Salves, Creams, Poultices, Soaks, and Compresses. The best herbs for each are given, with examples, and it's hard to walk away without being more confident than if you read other standard herbals briefly brushing over this important aspect of herbalism.

A true gem of Making Plant Medicine is the Herbal Formulary, which showcases over 500 herbs with each having it's exact best method of preparation discussed, as well as ratio. Before reading this, for example, I hadn't known Astraglus was best extracted in water with just a bit of alcohol to preserve as an unusual type of tincture/tea, rather than just a tincture alone. Tidbits about my favorite herbs makes this book priceless. It's backed with contradictions and use of each herb, and even packs more punch by delivering personal testimonials, dosages, and of course a full chapter devoted exclusively to the mathematics of tincturing. Marvelous!

Written in a straight forward, down to earth, and enthusiastic manner, it's hard not to get excited about herbs all over again when you read the stories of Richo and his family, their adventures with the herbs, and how complex our plants and bodies really are. A book that does not merely skim the surface in any stretch of the imagination.

Are you ready to begin making your own tinctures, vinegar extracts, herbal infusions and teas as well as other decoctions? Richo Cech, long time herbalist par excellence describes how to macerate, use various solvents or menstruum solutions, and create complex combinations or medicinal compounds. Although Cech clearly prefers an alcohol-based menstruum, he supplies formulas for other approaches for those who cannot tolerate alcohol.

I have found the formulas which don't require alcohol provided by James Green in THE HERBAL MEDICINE-MAKERS HANDBOOK easier to execute and less costly because they don't use as much fancy equipment and my husband will use them, but Cech insists that to make long lasting solutions you will want to use grain alcohol or a good brand of Vodka as well as the "proper tools". I use essential oils for various purposes, and dried herbs in teas, and in my experience both hold up at least one year. We use them so fast I can't speak to longevity or shelf life (At this very moment as I type, I have applied an oil mix to my right hand to relieve pain from various causes such as arthritis and carpel tunnel, and it is working fine). I suppose if you are making up batches for sale you might have more concern with preservation, but I wouldn't worry about using an alcohol based formula on a child so much as tinctures are mostly diluted in water. (Cough syrup is an exception).

If you are a gardener (or not) and are wondering how to preserve some of nature's bounty for medicinal (compressesses, salves, creams and other medicinal compounds) you might consider buying both books (Cech and Green) and conducting your own experiments, to see which approach works for you. This book has a dearth of illustrations, or else I would give it more stars.

With relevant and interesting anecdotes, Cech describes the fundamentals of plant medicine making in this comprehensive book. Any beginning herbalist will appreciate how Cech covers the traditional/folk methods as well as scientific methods of making herbal medicine.

The love and respect Cech has for the plant world shine through. Reading this book is like being an apprentice to a knowledgeable and experienced herbalist of the highest caliber.

This is not a beginner's herbal book. There are some sweet cartoonish illustrations throughout this excellent herbal book, that might make a causal buyer think that their going to read a starter's book on herbs.I would not recommend this creative book for novice readers to start with. There are other excellent short books, like John Lust's 'The Herb Book',to begin your herbal studies with. Before you start making your tintures and remedies, you must know your herb of choice. You may not know the side-effects and the possible allergic reactions before you start experimenting. Some new readers may incorrectly think that the proper small dosage was good and therefore a large dose will produce even better relief.Herbal misuse and improper dosage can not only make you sick,it can be fatal. It's a great herbal book, yet one needs to have some advanced herbal training and proper advice beforehand. Then you can start with the herbal remedies, only at the recommended safe levels, as an alternative daily therapy.

I found this book at my local library and I fell in love with it. I have been learning to make herbal infused oils, balms, etc. for a couple years now and am always happy to read new information on the subject of herbs and how to use them. This is the best book I have found on the subject! Hands down. It not only has info telling what to use the herbs for, it tells many different ways to prepair the plants for use. Teas, compresses, oils, tinctures, etc. And you don't have to have expensive equiptment to make the products. The instructions, and information are very easy to understand. Richo has a very friendly, open way of writing that makes me feel like I'm learning from a family friend. (Bonus: his daughter draws the cutest little illustrations to open each chapter. So sweet.)

I would recommend this book to any person who wants to learn about herbs, for any reason. It is well worth the money and it will be in use at my house for years to come.

The Essential C-Section Guide: Pain Control, Healing at Home, Getting Your Body Back, and Everything

The Essential C-Section Guide: Pain Control, Healing at Home, Getting Your Body Back, and Everything Else You Need to Know About a Cesarean BirthI had a planned c-section and found this book to be very helpful, especially the exercize plan for recovery. The book provides a nice description of the proceedure, but it is the chapters on emotional impacts of c-section and information for your partner really set it apart. It is nice that the book covers both planned and unplanned c-sections. It is nice that the authors provide warnings before content that may be upsetting so that you can decide whether or not to read that section. I have recommended the book to several friends and they all said that the book helped them with their recoveries as well.

I tend to be a person who is not satisfied with just one source of information and do extensive research on every subject that I am educating myself on. After looking at many different books and resources, I can honestly say that this is the only book that you need to prepare you for your c-section. This comprehensive reference provides thorough information while maintaining a humanistic approach to the subject matter. This book contains a whole chapter on the emotional aspects of having a cesarean which I found to be very helpful, since it is something that is not usually addressed. On top of the information included to aid you in your physical recovery there is another chapter with workout information when you are ready for that. I would have paid twice the price I did for this truly "essential" resource

Three years ago, I underwent an emergency c-section and have had emotional issues surrounding it since. Now that I've learned with this second pregnancy that I am not a candidate for an attempted vaginal birth, I decided it was high time to educate myself as much as possible.

After reading this book, not only am I feeling more prepared for the upcoming c-section but I'm also more understanding of the one I had years ago. I heartily recommend this for every woman, whether she's pregnant and planning on a vaginal birth or a mom that has had a c-section in the past.

I bought the book solely for the workout chapter. I had had one c-section already and never was able to find a workout routine that didn't end up causing me pain at the incision site. This workout is gentle enough to start with, but effective in getting back your abdominal muscles. I've been doing it for 5 weeks now and my stomach is significantly flatter. I've also lost 8 pounds. I can't say much about the rest of the book because, since it was my second c-section, I didn't need to read it.

Cure Your Cancer: Your Guide to the Internet

Cure Your Cancer: Your Guide to the InternetOK, sorry for the pun, but it's true. Bill Henderson has found a way to provide the best researched PROVEN treatments and CURES for cancers of all shapes and sizes in an easy to read and understand format. While waiting for my doctors to schedule, execute and analyse a biopsy of my neck (prior tests have made them suspect some kind of lymphoma), I started doing some research of my own and stumbled across Bill's fabulous book. I immediately started upping my dosages of some of the supplements I was already taking, and added some others recommended by several of the doctors and scientists mentioned in the book. I also modified my diet somewhat. Within 3 days of starting, the seering and throbbing pain I was experiencing DISAPPEARED! The mass in my neck, what ever it is (still haven't got the results back from the biopsy) softened and shrunk by 20-30%. Within a week, I can now see the shape of my face again (mass now smaller by over 50%!!), and I feel like I am winning my fight already! I am still fine-tuning my protocol based on many of the recommendations in Bill's book, have several supplements on order through discount nutrient providers (all found in the book), and have been constantly reading new material through many of the links provided within the book. It may only seem like 200 pages or so, but with the links to other invaluable sites as well as the newsletter archives on Bill's website, you too can become an "expert" on cancer and alternative treatments in a very short time. And you can keep learning new proven techniques because Bill is contstantly researching and updating his site with the latest and greatest. This book could literally save your life or the life of someone you love. Even if no one you know has cancer, you can learn how to insure that you and your family never get it by reading this book and learning EXACTLY what causes cancer (turns out it's pretty simple!) and how you can make yourself virtually cancer-proof. I only wish I knew this information 3 years ago when my Dad was battling leukemia. Chemo did not save him. Read this book. You won't regret it.

With a whole world of information out there on the internet about cancer it can leave you confused and feel like you are running around in a maze not knowing where to turn or what to believe. This book helped me get informed and ready to help my mother in just a few hours.

I found Bill Henderson's book to be an excellent overview of numerous natural treatments for cancer. He is not selling any product or promoting a single treatment method. Instead I found the book to be an extemely well written, intelligent, concise and to the point overview of many excellent natural cancer treatments. Also included are treatments that will help people already on chemotherapy.

The book allows you to track down more information about your favourite treatment by providing website addresses and suggests where you can get natural products at the cheapest prices (in the USA). It really helps the reader to be fully informed about ALL their options other than just surgery, radiation or chemotherapy.

The testimonials were very convincing and helped me to to have the confidence to help my mother who was near death (suffering from advanced metastic breast cancer that has spread to the liver, lungs, ovaries and bones) to keep taking dried barley greens. Within 2 days her strong pain levels had improved. After 9 days she was COMPLETELY off all pain and nausea medication and in NO PAIN whatsoever. I am so thankful I read this book and became more informed about the many, well known, tried and proven natural treatments out there.

Thankyou Bill Henderson.

This is a fantastic book! It is written extremely positive and will be a "Bible" throughout a cancer ordeal. It is a ray of hope and friend for the lost soul on a solo Cancer journey. It is very well organized and easy to read. It is up-to-date and has many online links that work on the web. It will provide a positive and structured environment to help you make intelligent decisions in healing yourself with or without a doctor's aid. This book taught me more about Cancer than a visit to the Oncologist only after 10 minutes of browsing it.

I found the book to be very informative. I learned much from Bill's research and Heaven knows I could not have found out much of it on my own. I was diagnosed with Mantle B Cell Lymphoma in Feb 2001. As of the last biofeedback test that was run on me, the cancer was pronounced dead. I have visited with Bill on the phone and he is a very genuine person and has a true desire to help people and his years of research have benefited many people. I admire someone that is willing to go to the extent of research that Bill has and check out his findings and all that to help total strangers. I recommend the book to any one facing the terror of cancer for themselves or their family.

After stumbling across Bill Henderson's book, I immediately endeavoured to be my own guinea pig and try out his products. For several years, I was experiencing hormonal instability and, as a result, was chronically ill and suffered from facial blemishes.

After taking Hydroxygen Plus, Mega Minerals and Coral Calcium as well as Modifilan, I noticed an immediate change to my skin, my eyes and my general health. My GP advised me to get off these products but I dismissed her advise as conventional medicine proved to be useless to me for so long. It is now very cold in Melbourne, and everyone I know is suffering from the cold or flu or is feeling run-down. In the past, I would be the first to be sick, but I have not been ill at all.

People always comment on how good my skin looks and how healthy I look in general. I am so impressed with these products and recommend them to everyone. People are still reluctant to try them out as they listen to their doctors who warn them that they do not work. My only ammunition though is that I am the perfect example of recovery.

Well done Bill Henderson! I only wish that we had Oxygen Therapy in Australia and that the products were sold here. Nobody knows about these products but I am hoping to make a change.

Many Regards

Vicky
