Beat Overeating Now!: Take Control of Your Hunger Hormones to Lose Weight Fast

Beat Overeating Now!: Take Control of Your Hunger Hormones to Lose Weight FastDr. Isaacs breaks down the complex world of hormones and their impact on weight to a language that we can all understand. I particularly like the action plans that are presented throughout the book and the very helpful and easy to implement solutions to beating overeating and obesity. I found the book easy to read, despite the complexity of the subject matter. And most importantly, Dr. Isaacs isn't hawking a quick fix or a magic bullet. His message is based in science and health. and Reality. Calories in Calories out. Just make sure to put the right Calories In based on those that will affect the pesky hormones. I have started to implement Dr. Isaacs suggestions and have already seen improvement. I feel great and am starting to lose weight.

Over my 73 years I must have read every book on diet, nutrition and weight loss so I must consider that I am somewhat of an "expert" on the subject. Dr. Isaacs's book has made me see the human body in a completely different way and the effects of the hormones on our weight seems to be really significant. I really enjoyed the information on the relationship of the different food groups to the hormone production and how we can manipulate our bodies to our advantage. He may be down on my one of my favorites (peanut butter) but I guess moderation is the key!! This book is a must read for anyone who really cares about the obesity epidemic and all the health issues that accompany this tremendous problem.

Reading this easy formatted book is like having a conversation with your doctor at your own pace. The science behind why eating breakfast and drinking water among all of the other tips just made everything click and make sense. It's not a "diet" book, it's a gentle guide to lifestyle choices in regards to fueling your body. The action plan bullet statements at the beginning of each chapter provide both a mindset and a review of the information for each. Plenty of room in the margins for your own notes and thoughts. After years of thinking of losing weight as deprivation and struggle, I now think of what foods will be best for balancing my hormones and allow the weight loss to be a secondary side effect of doing so. Thank you Dr. Isaacs for sharing your wisdom, knowledge and enjoyable writing style.

All Sickness Is Home Sickness

All Sickness Is Home SicknessDianne Connelly has written a book that is informative, enlightening, and soothing to the soul. Through the seamless, almost poetic flow of her words, she conveys a profound and tender respect for the reader that in itself is a healing meditation. Acupuncture is Connelly's particular discipline, but anyone interested in bio-psycho-spiritual healing will draw great comfort from this work. She calls us back again and again to the fact that it is relationship that eases all of our ailments, and it is connection--person to person, ego to Self, psyche to body--that creates wholeness. I re-read All Sickness is Homesickness whenever I need a gentle reminder of the sacredness of my own healing vocation, and I recommend it frequently to my patients.

Reading this work is like reading good poetry--vivid, precise, with an economy of words and a wealth of images that bring the reader into a living conversation with the author. The book is about relationships which is are essence of healing--between patient and practitioner, between individual and symptoms, between the sacred and the mundane, and between the spirit and the body. In an era of new age "presto-change-o" approaches to holistic healing, it is refreshing to encounter a writer with such depth of knowledge and soulful expression. I recommend it to my patients often.

Beautifully rich prose and poetry by a gifted writer. Evokes a longing for and creates a meeting with the deep essence of healing, the river that must underlie the technical or methodological details in any school of medicine, new or ancient, western or eastern, "religious" or "not so". All these diverse forms of healing must somehow make and sustain a vital connection with life, with life force at a cellular level.

The author who is an acupuncturist, a leader in her field, has plenty of technical experience to be respected that she could have highlighted. Yet she has published something very unique -not another text/reference on techniques, secrets of the ancients, or point prescriptions of which there are already many. Instead she creates a meditative invitation which spirals ever deeper into sacred space, that "home" created in and by relationship, where confrontation with mystery, reverence and life force can bring about change, healing, and transformation.

Reading it renews my own quest, joy and wonder for life -for witnessing nature's deep continuous stream of wisdom and its capacity to transform wounding into healing, often where it is least expected. The beauty of her own prose and the poetic quotes which she has collected over a lifetime illustrate an inner map for travellers who seek BEING, as both the healer and the healed. I and likely others will desire to return home again, over and over, through the pages of her book.

Two stars because the book comes highly recommended from a friend so I was eager to read it.

So I downloaded it to my Kindle for iPad but it downloaded oddly like the pages just exploded and then were always turned sideways so had to lock the rotation and even then, the pages were unreadable whole hunks were just not showing up.

Then I realized I could read it on the computer so I opened it but it showed up with the pages on their side, meaning I'd have to kink my neck to the left and read half-upside down. Not an option.

When I contacted "Help" they suggested I delete it and re-download it but that didn't work. Then wipe everything off my Kindle including all the books that work just fine and reload everything too much time and given that it was showing up oddly on the computer reading option I figured it probably wasn't scanned properly to begin with. So I just returned the Kindle purchase, got my money back, and will figure out something else probably just borrow it from my friend.

I love technology when it works.

Bratislava, 2nd

Bratislava, 2ndThis guide book is absolutely wonderful!

It is the first guide I found which really does justice to this fabulous city and doesn't push a few lines into the back of a guide book about the Czech Republic.

It has fascinating details on the complicated history and culture and what looks like an insider's guide to the hip restaurants, cafes and bars.

The eating and drinking section is a pleasure to read on its own, as it is really witty and well-written and I would recommend this book to anybody who wants to know the city better.

Many people say that there is not much to do in Bratislava, but obviously they could not have had this guide.

It is impossible to be bored in Bratislava with this guide, there are dozens of suggestions of day trips, where to stay, eat and drink and some excellent walking tours of the city.

After reading this guide from cover to cover, I can't wait to visit Bratislava and try out the revolving TV tower restaurant on Kamzik hill or the UFO cafe in a flying saucer spacecraft. They sound like such fun destinations!

The pocket-sized Bradt guide is also great as it really does fit in your pocket or hand-bag and is easy to carry everywhere I go.

This small guide, easy to pop in a pocket, provided us with just about all the information we needed for planning a short stay in this city. Terrific!

Clear Skin: Organic Action Plan for Acne

Clear Skin: Organic Action Plan for AcneYou won't regret getting this book!

Clear Skin: Organic Guide for Acne is very well-organized, easy to read, and wonderfully educational. It doesn't aim to convert you into organic junkie, this "sandals-and-granola" type which I personally respect but hardly relate to. Organic here, in my opinion, means gentle, natural approach to improving our oh-so-problem skin from inside out.

The information Gabriel presents includes the most recent research. She discusses the merits and myths of traditional acne treatments and offers organic and all natural skin care products that are suitable for many skin types.

I got this book when I read two other books (Acne Cure and Unblemished!) on the subject, before I went to a dermatologist who suggested she should put me on Accutane. By the time I was formally educated, I had already heard everything from other books, and was also able to identify some dated traditional information. There's nothing old "chocolate won't give you acne" in this book! Everything is up to date and very unpretentiously explained. She really helped me understand why there isn't a consensus of opinion on the "best" cure for acne, why benzoyl peroxide literally ruined my skin and why many chemical ingredients in skin care products I use are bad if you have acne. Most importantly this book contains comprehensive step-by-step routines for each and every skin type, and you can easily mix and match them because they are all gentle and safe. Best thing, Gabriel doesn't sell anything and she's not Proactive or any other beauty brand salesperson.

If you are in the "Your skin, your science experiment" camp, she tells you several easy things so you can learn more about your own skin processes and various regimens (i.e., Acne Facial) you can try to control and fine tune your own skin care routine.

I have tried everything, including years of prescription treatments that made my skin peel, crack, and burn. I used Accutane, twice, with little improvement to my acne at all. I have had moderate to severe acne for years, and finally, at the age of 18, its disappearing thanks to this book. I do not follow their suggested diet, but i do now eat mostly low GI foods. I used her suggestions incrementally to see how each one affected my skin, and the diet alone caused a huge improvement. the recipes as well as her recommendations for products all work great. It is extremely nice to not only be off all of my prescriptions, but to have even better skin than before. after a little less than a month, all i have left are a one or two small pimples and some acne spots and scars that are fading. i would recommend this book to anyone, especially those who do not want to use products with parabans or harsh chemicals

I bought this book along Julie Gabriel's recent book, The Green Beauty Guide, and I must admit: this one is truly amazing and deserves much more attention! As a former acne sufferer, Julie is very focused on natural treatment strategies for acne-prone skin.

What's really great, she offers detailed skincare plans for each group of people who may have acne: teenagers, adult women, men, people with dark and mature skin, even pregnant women!

I enjoyed the homemade recipes, too. I used the book to custom-make my own acne regimen, and I already see the improvement, only after a week of sticking to it.

Gabriel has lots of good information, much of it new to me (even though I'm a rabid consumer of beauty/nutrition news). However, she is not a native English speaker and whoever was supposed to edit/proof her book did a terrible, terrible job. I found the typos and strange sentence structures distracting. It's not a problem on every page, though.

Always helpful to gain information and reference ways to combat acne the natural way so having this book and reading through it has been a real gem. How to Keep Mom (and Yourself) Out of a Nursing Home: Seven Keys to Keeping Your Independence

How to Keep Mom Out of a Nursing Home: Seven Keys to Keeping Your IndependenceI lost my mom suddenly a couple of years ago and since then, I've been very interested in maintaining a healthy lifestyle for the sake of my health and for my kids.

It was disheartening to see my mom's health deteriorate overtime from not doing the simple things that Dr. Fisher talks about doing in his book. However, I love the fact that he doesn't just talk about the physical things one needs to do, but also addresses the potential issues with Medicare and the options if you do need long term care.

This is not just a self-help book, but an educational and how-to deal with the issues that we need, but feel uncomfortable to do. Dr. Fisher makes a great case based on his own experience and writes it in a way that helps me feel comfortable and encourage to make the necessary changes.

In addition, this book is refreshing and absolutely relevant to my generation who are dealing with aging parents and self awareness of our mortality. Now I know have a better sense of where I can make healthy choices, understand my future options and prepare better for the eventual for not only me, but my loved ones who need this advice.

Simple, straightforward ideas for taking care of yourself and your loved ones as they age. Great book to help your family members keep the freedom that they want in living on their own...

This is an excellent book. It is instructing you what are the real problems and how to solve them in order to age in your home. It is not one of the other type of books which instructs you how to manage care of elder people. Instead it explains what are the reasons somebody may need hospitalization into a Nursing Home and how to avoid it as long as you can. I own a company (perlis-aal.com) which develops products to Age in Place and I still think that this book envisioned me about what and how to do.

I originally purchased this book thinking it was a resource for caregivers on keeping an aging parent out of a nursing home for as long as possible. I soon found out that it was much more.

Having been a registered nurse for almost 30 years and a caregiver for my father who lived with me in my home for 4 years before he passed away, it was my goal to keep my father out of a nursing home. I've done clinical practice in several of these homes as part of my training (I apologize to all nursing homes who do their best to provide great care within their limited budgets) but I am not a fan of them!

Not only does Dr. Fisher explain how suddenly a crisis can occur that places a parent or aging spouse into a nursing home, but he also provides wonderful information for those of us in our mid-life years on how we can better avoid ending up in one ourselves.

He discusses the importance of maintaining our independence by taking care of our bodies and also discusses systems which should be put into place as soon as possible (durable powers of attorney for health care, trusts, wills and long-term care insurance).

This is a great book for everyone, not just for those who are caring for aging relatives.

Thanks, Dr. Fisher.

Spas & Hot Tubs, Saunas & Home Gyms: Award-Winning Design Ideas, Step-by-Step Installation Projects, Water Care & EquipmentProbably most worthwhile if you're thinking of a sauna-hot tub combination. Some raw, low-level do-it-yourself drawings in here, but mostly a starting point for your own designs. Quite good, but if a sauna is what you're after, the sauna-only books might be a better bet for you. The home gym bits seemed like an add-on to the book.

Undesigning the Bath

Undesigning the BathThis is not for the intrepid house remodeler. Instead, it is for contemplation of the act of cleansing and renewal: how preparing for this act affects one's personal space: and how the bath creates and reinforces important social functions.

Reading the book requires some energy. I suggest that you read the footnotes and view the photographs as you read.

You will be exposed to ontology, epistemology, and axiology of the bath for a very reasonable price.

It is likely that your choices about plumbing will be influenced by reading Koren.

Amazing photos of inspirational bathing environments. Highly recommended for sublime musings on the ideal bath--to built or take.

If you are looking for any kind of practical advice, you won't find it here. The author spends half the book telling us why arhitects can't design baths. The rest of the book is spent potificating on vague notions of the bath experience. The pictures suggest the ulitimate bathing experience comes from various outdoor, earthy, natural baths. If you have a desire to create a mud-pit bath in your backyard, read this book. Otherwise, forget it.
