Beauty and the Beam: Your Complete Guide to Cosmetic Laser Surgery (Quality Medical Home Health Libr

Beauty and the Beam: Your Complete Guide to Cosmetic Laser SurgeryFirst of all, I found this book very well-written-it is practical and down to earth, gives you clear descriptions of several kinds of procedures for laser surgery (hair-removal, smoothing wrinkles, helping spider-web veins etc) and also has a nice sense of humor at times. I love that the authors give you pros and cons, actual cost ranges, things to watch for and anecdotes. It was interested to read about someone who had a birthmark removed, for instance, or a tattoo removed and then re-created (with the guy's current wife's name!) Some of the stories are touching, some are more light-hearted, all gave it a human touch.

I am no scientist but I also appreciated reading about some of the scientific and medical aspects of these procedures. For anyone considering any kind of voluntary laser surgery, this book is really a must-have and a wonderful resource. I'd recommend it to any friend or family member who was thinking about beautifying with laser-and I have to admit it definitely interested me in some of the procedures. Now I feel like I know better what to expect!

Another great book by Joan Swirsky. Beauty and the Beam was very informative. It answered all of my questions about laser and cosmetic surgery.

Gardening for Health and Nutrition

Gardening for Health and NutritionI found this book at the bottom of my book shelf. I picked it up for nothing at a library sale. Flipping through the book I was suprised to find myself completely hooked.

I've been an avid suburban gardener for a while, but this book opened my eyes to what natural gardening is all about. After this book, I'm dedicated to learning more on real gardening.

Besides the arcane (Read Organic) Gardening knowledge, I loved the California-Granola message. Peace, love, and Mother Earth baby. Not to mention strong Conservative Christian overtones...but I like that.

I recommend this book to anyone who owns a rectangle of dirt with greenery growing out of it. It will change the way you think about plants, and life. Some of the concepts are a little out of date, but still lots of fun.

The One Hundred: A Guide to the Pieces Every Stylish Woman Must Own

The One Hundred: A Guide to the Pieces Every Stylish Woman Must OwnThe subhead reads "A Guide to the Pieces Every Stylish Woman Must Own." This book delivers. Author Garcia makes it clear that this list is HER list, and that every woman will have a somewhat different collection of apparel essentials. But this is a good place to start.

The list is in alphabetical order (see below). Each listing has a description and full-color illustration of the item. Many have a sidebar called Fashion 101, which is a short history of the product, often with quotes. Garcia also includes Fun Facts, her own personal favorite brands, and many fashion tips.

Especially fun are "Great Moments" segments. Great Moments in men's white shirts include Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday, Elizabeth Taylor in Giant, Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman and Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction.

The best thing about this book is how it elevates timeless quality over of-the-moment fads. My 14-year-old daughter looked at The One Hundred and then said she wants to save up and buy maybe one piece every other month or so, so she'll have a good collection when she gets out of high school. If a book can pass along that kind of advice to teens, I'm all for it!

Here are the chapters:

A: A-line Dress, Animal Print, Ankle Bootie, Aviators

B: Ballet Flat, Bangles, Belts, Bikini, BlackBerry, Black Opaque Tights, Blazer, Boyfriend Cardigan, Brooch

C: Cable-Knit Sweater, Caftan, Camel Coat, Cape, Cashmere Sweater, Charm Bracelet, Clutch, Cocktail Ring, Converse, Cosmetics Bag, Cowboy Boots, Cuff

D, E, F: Denim Jacket, Diamond Studs, Driving Shoe, Espadrilles, Evening Gown, Exotic Skin Bag, Fishnets, Frye Harness Boot, Fur

G, H, I: Gentlemen's Hat, Gloves, Havaianas, Hobo Bag, Hoop Earrings, Investment Bag, iPod

J, K, L: Jeans, Jewelry Pouches, Khakis, Knee Boots, Leather Pants, Lingerie, Little Black Dress, Little White Dress, L.L. Bean Tote, Luggage

M, N, O: Mad Money, Man's White Shirt, Mary Janes, Minnetonka Moccasin, Missoni Knit, Monogrammed Stationery, Motorcycle Jacket, Nail Polish, Old Concert T-Shirt, One-Piece Swimsuit

P, Q, R: Pajamas, Peacoat, Pearl Necklace, Pencil Skirt, Perfume, Plain White Tee, Polo Shirt, Pucci, Push-Up Bra, Quality Champagne, Red Lipstick, Robe

S: Safari Jacket, Sandals, Sarong, Signet Ring, Silk Scarf, Slippers, Spanx, Statement Necklace, Stilettos, Striped Sailor Shirt, Suit, Sunhat

T, U, V: Trench, Turquoise and Coral Jewelry, Tuxedo Jacket, Umbrella, Underwear, Valid Passport, Vans, Vintage

W, Y, Z: Watch, Wayfarers, Wellington Boot, Wide-Leg Trousers, Wrap Dress, Yoga Gear, Zippered Hoodie

This is the best fashion/style book I have read so far (and I have several, including forty year old classics like Dariaux's). While it may be a useful exercise, it is difficult to pare a wardrobe down to 10 looks (Gunn); there's more to style than that, and Garcia knows it. Hence, the 100.... What I like about Nina's second book (I liked the first one, The Little Black Book of Style, too), is that she encourages us to develop our own style, while giving you concrete information about classic styles (e.g., the best opaque black tights--Wolford)or ones that you might be a little leery about trying; e.g., how to discreetly wear fishnet stockings, including nude ones; vintage brooches; statement necklaces. I have read the book twice...that says a lot. I enjoy Garcia's writing style, confidences about her own wardrobe and work as a fashion editor, and admonishments about how not to cheapen a look; e.g., the wrong way to wear animal prints (which I have yet to dare...)or fishnets. Garcia is very good about distinguishing between style and trends, and encourages her readers to work with what they have or to slowly acquire classics, instead of becoming a fashion victim, with the latest disposable, expensive 'it' bag or jeans. After reading about the usefulness of a black cashmere turtleneck, I bought one--love it. After the reminder about the joys of a longer camel hair coat, I picked one up on sale--hadn't had one in years. In November, while traveling in Turkey, I picked up a unique, handmade statement necklace to fill the neckline of a classic black dress or a plain white shirt. I have definitely developed my 'style' from reading this book. I also loved the illustrations by Toledo--fun and elegant!

If you're a Project Runway fan, Nina Garcia needs no introduction. Her new book, the One Hundred is on the 100 things a woman of style needs in her wardrobe. Some of her choices are surprising: faux fur?, others I disagred with: unless your backside is so small that a large butterfly can't land comfortably on it you have no business buying white jeans... but overall the book is fantastic and funny and of course, it has the fabulous illustrations by Rueben Toledo. I've read a lot of fashion books. This one is a keeper. It's going on my shelf right next to my copy of Tim Gunn's book.

This book had some nice pictures and ideas, but I don't think it is the most helpful. It also rubbed me the wrong way telling me to buy mostly items that cost several hundreds to thousands of dollars to achieve style. We all know that style is not a matter of money, but of arranging pieces from your wardrobe in an interesting manner. I wish that Ms. Garcia would of mentioned some of her favorites some high priced to moderate priced. Ms. Garcia only mentions the high priced items. That is why I recommend the other book I read recently called: How not to look old: fast and effortless ways to look 10 years younger, 10 pounds lighter, 10 times better by Charla Krupp. Since I am in my forties I found this book much more helpful in improving my style and looks, plus the author Ms. Krupp recommends low priced to high priced items.

The other books I think worth checking out if you want to improve your style are: In the dressing room with Brenda: a fun and practical guide to buying smart and looking great by Brenda Kinsel; and Brenda's wardrobe companion: a workbook for getting the look you want, with the clothes you love by Brenda Kinsel.

I enjoy reading books about style, but this one by Ms. Garcia is not the best and I do not recommend it.

This book claims to tell you about the 100 pieces every woman should have in her closet. The author does not distinguish between women on the basis of age or body type. I would re-write this sub-title to say, the 100 must have pieces for women under 25 and 125(lbs) I don't think a woman of 50 or so, for example, needs; a bikini, Frye boots, or a striped sailor shirt.(these are just three of the scores of items I would eliminate) And really who considers a cape, a caftan or a charm bracelet "must have" pieces.

In the sections where she could have provided some useful information, such as 'how to spot a fake' (purse) she provides very limited information. I don't know why this book was so highly rated but believe me there are countless other books about fashion and wardrobe that are better. Pass on this one.

The Tropical Spa: Asian Secrets of Health, Beauty and Relaxation

The Tropical Spa: Asian Secrets of Health, Beauty and RelaxationThis book was not what I expected. I thought it would be full of recipies and practices of Asian spas, and it is instead mostly devoted to describing various popular Asian spas. There are some recipies, but not very many. However, it is a beautifully photographed book -and if you are studying spas themselves (or are planning a trip to Asia and are wondering which spa would suit you best), this would definitely be a book to have.

This beautiful book has great photography and combined with the easy going and very enjoyable/readable writing style you can thus get a real feel for the spa destinations. But then it also has spa food, explanations of the treatments, product details, a certain amount on the history and culture behind the Asian spa, glossaries etc. It covers the subject from every angle. A great book on a very "in" subject, also featuring the best back in the world!

I have watched Bali become the number one tourist destination point over the last 12 years. It was always a great place for beauty treatments, local spas, and magnifient buildings and terrain. This book puts together the best of the above in a picture book full of the most exotic spas, water areas, food, and spices that Bali (and a little of Thailand) has to offer. The Begawan Giri is a most see for anyone who wants to witnesss paradise. I made my way up there upon reading the book and found something so magical and beautiful that it was inspirational. I could not stop talking about it for days. The Asian Spas are so much more intoxicating and beautiful then the European Spas. The packaging of the products with natural fibers, banana leaves, lotus leaves, etc are perfectly pleasing. They are politically correct and appealing. This book is just the beginning of what is taking place in Bali; hopefully other parts of the world will emulate this approach. After reading this book get ready to go for the treatment. And do eat at the Chedi as suggested. I did and it was superbe.

Being Asian and proud of my heritage, I grew up watching my late grandmother prepared her own home-made facial products with natural herbs found in the forest. This book provide a good introduction to some of the best Asian Spas and an insight into the traditional indonesian and malay concoction of spa treatment, some I believe passed from generation to generation. The resorts featured offers travellers an incomparable and convenient setting for discovering the Asian secret to the ultimate relaxation and indulgence for the senses. A must have for all Spa lovers!

I actully bought this book in Bogor (Java, Indonesia) at the Novotel gift shop while on vacation recently. I stayed at the Chedi during this trip, and the Mandara spa facilities and food are as portrayed in the book, fabulous! We went to the San Gria Spa and Resort in Lembang for our spa experience, as well as the Dharmawangsa in Jakarta. Having had spa treatments in both the U.S. and Indonesia, I have to say that Asia can do it the best! The treatment recipes offered in the book that I have actually tried in the spas (the Balinese Boreh, the Bali Kopi Scrub, and the Creme Bath Hair Treatment) were all heavenly, leaving me feel soft all over, rejuvinated, and at peace. This book goes up on my shelf next to Bali Style by Rod Helmi and Barbara Walker. I love this life!

ACSM's Resource Manual for Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription

ACSM's Resource Manual for Guidelines for Exercise Testing and PrescriptionThis book is the primary resource for ACSM certification. The newest edition is much more user friendly than previous editions and has some important changes in guidelines and protocols. I was studying for ACSM HFS cert for about 3 months with the previous edition but was informed at a ACSM workshop that I would need to purchase this edition because of the changes in the info. I got this resource only several weeks before sitting for my certification. I PASSED!! I felt well prepared and scored well.

I needed this book for a class. It is as I expected. Useful for class. I haven't used it outside of class yet.

As a resource manual for passing the ACSM's HFS Certification Exam it leaves a lot to be desired. For a 3rd edition it is painfully full of typo errors which include wrong answers for the review tests which makes you doubt your knowledge. In addition it only covers about 1/2 of what's on the exam. To be fair the authors do suggest that it not be the only resourse used to prepare for the test. I strongly suggest that you also purchase ACSM's Resource Manual for Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription and use it as your main source.

Kelee Meditation: Free your Mind

Kelee Meditation: Free your MindI have been practicing the Kelee meditation for a few years and have found it to be the most effective, efficient and user friendly form of meditation. I first came to meditation via the mindfulness route when looking for ways to deal with migraines. However, what I have found with the Kelee method is that it is the succinct form of meditation in which one learns to do the opposite of mindfulness, and not think. Rather relax into a state without thoughts for a shorter period of time, but consistently and the results are forthcoming as one's practice progresses. By utilizing the three P"s: practice, patience, and persistance I have experienced improvement with my migraines and beyond that a calmer, clearer perspective of life itself. Ten minutes twice a day is doable and sustainable while other more lengthy forms of mediation may be beneficial, they generally are not able to be maintained for the long haul and actually miss the point of getting out of one's head and thoughts entirely. Kelee meditation is simple, successful, serene.

David J. Spencer, Ph.D.

I've really enjoyed all of Ron's books and all his insights. I've found that doing the Kelee Meditation is the simplest and most profound way of understanding myself. In the process of getting more clarity, I've also found much more contentment, joy & meaning. The benefits of seeing the world more clearly literally help every aspect of my life. I highly recommend the Kelee Meditation to anyone searching for peace, happiness or fulfillment. The Kelee Meditation really is a silent miracle and it will free your mind. Enjoy the reading!

I have been studying the Kelee via Meditation for over 6 years, with profound results. I came across it as an elite coach in 2006, with one of my athletes, who studies with Ron, introducing it to me. Like any great teacher, everything Ron teaches leads you inwardly, so you can see for yourself, not only what you are looking for, but what may be blocking you. His clarity on the subject of the mind and meditation means he doesn't waste any words in his books. I think there is enough confusion on the subject of the mind and spirituality and it's great to learn from someone that knows. If you want to learn about your mind and a simple meditation technique that works, this is a great way to start. I strongly recommend his other books too, which dive deeper into the subject of the mind, without ever compromising his clarity and simplicity. Matt:)

With a daily practice of Kelee Meditation I have experienced moments of contentment. I'm learning that acceptance and love can't be felt until I feel it within, for myself. It's an ongoing practice that's helping me release fear to feel freedom in my mind and heart. I am grateful to Ron W. Rathbun for his clear and simple method that stems from truth.
