Working Out Sucks! (And Why It Doesn't Have To): The Only 21-Day Kick-Start Plan for Total Health an

Working Out Sucks!: The Only 21-Day Kick-Start Plan for Total Health and Fitness You'll Ever NeedThis book is a very good motivator, giving positive insight for all of our excuses, behavioral modification, and nutritional encouragement.

What I found lacking was positive exercises / activities for those of us who find working out difficult. I was looking for something NEW to entice me. Rather the book ended with a typical menu plan & workout routine.

Do you need a "no more lame excuses" smackdown to get started on the journey to better health and all around fit-tastic-ness? Do you like stats and quotes that rouse you? You will then respond to the opening chapter-ettes that are designed to get you out of your snuggie and into the gym or outdoors.

I thought the book would be "in your face" and it is, but not in a blaming, name-calling way. More in a sincerely concerned, "Save your own life and money" kind of way.

Bottom line as the three authors, each an expert in his/ her field explain -the consequences of staying sedentary suck more than getting off the lazy-boy and into the gym or park or trail.

Quick, easy, motivating read that has a lot of personality.

And just because I can write a book, doesn't mean you should pay attention to it. Runyon had an 'in your face' attitude about fitness, which I appreciated as a fat guy trying to loose weight. However, the book was repetitive...could have done without that.

Although I was a bit reluctant to read this book because I don't think working out sucks (I'm a fitness instructor and personal trainer), I loved it.

It's perfect for the not-yet-fit who know they should get moving but are having a hard time getting over their activation energy. The authors point out all the things that suck even more than working out, including illness and death.

I particularly enjoyed the second section of the book, ways to change your behavior.

If you need a bit of a kick to get started working out, buy this book!

Saving your life one day at a time

Saving your life one day at a timeI have just finished reading Saving Your Life One Day at a Time. I am often asked by patients and students where to get the information they need to help themselves. I now have a great resource to point them to. Dr. Sugarman points the way for people to begin the process of changing their life by making small changes that payoff over a lifetime. My favorite sections dealt with movement and breathing. These topics are rarely dealt with by other authors. If you want to get a head start on stopping pain and disability before they start or if you want to deal with such things right now read and follow the steps laid out in this book. That is the message I am giving to my patients.

After spending years in the trenches with world-class performers, I've been afforded the opportunity to have conversations with brilliant minds. Dr. Roy Sugarman leads those conversations by continually challenging conventional wisdom with his rich insights and practical applications to create optimal living. He lives what he writes and his writings illuminate simple and powerful methods to dramatically enhance the quality of life's experiences. When it comes to getting it elegantly right, Dr Sugarman nailed it. If you're interested in changing and enhancing the quality of your life -if you're interested in living a high performing life -you'll likely find this book difficult to put down. His insights are compelling and practical.

Unlike many books in this genre Dr Sugarman then goes on to give practical instruction on techniques / strategies to get real long term change.

The Special Ops Workout: The Elite Exercise Program Inspired by the United States Special Operations

The Special Ops Workout: The Elite Exercise Program Inspired by the United States Special Operations CommandI have to say that this book is better than I expected. Stew Smith gives some good information about what special ops are and the qualities one needs to become a member of this elite cadre. I am not in the military, but I found this section to be edifying and it gave me more appreciation for those who serve.

The six-week programs are great. They are uncomplicated and use little equipment, but very effective a solid cardio base with butt kicking strength building. In short, this creates functional strength. You won't just look strong, you will be strong. This will make warriors of men. All exercises and stretches are clearly explaned with pictures. The only criticism of these programs is that I can't swim, so I needed to substitute other exercises, because I didn't feel like drowning. In addition to the workout programs, there is also an informative section regarding nutrition.

The one let down of this book was the 12 week introduction workout program, at least the first 4 weeks of it are unnecissary. If anyone needs this kind of introductary program, then this book is probably not suited for them. The bulk of this book is suited for serious athletes and those looking into special ops. I suppose this 12 week program makes it more appealing to the masses, but I don't believe this book to be one for the masses.

Other books Inside Delta Force by Eric Haney, Infinite Intensity by Ross Enamait

This workout book contains good information with challenging workouts. As someone who is preparing for the Army, I can say that this is most complete workout book for preparation on the market. None of the competitors come close to the full spectrum workouts this book has. You have access to programs with weight training, cals, nutrition, swimming, running, and rucking. You can mix and match certain workouts or just do what is prescribed. I do wish that there was a little more rucking insight other than just generic information. But other than that it is a high quality purchase.

Mike Mejia and Stew Smith put together a comprehensive book detailing what it takes to be apart of the Special Forces community. Together, their knowledge, know-how, and grit lay the foundation for what it takes, physically and mentally, to screen for the Navy Seals, Army Special Forces and Air Force Special Forces. The exercises and workouts contained there within give the reader a glimpse of what tools and abilities are needed to suceed and become a part of our Special Forces.

I for one have used this book and another of Stew Smiths book while serving in OIF. All the workouts allow me to stay in shape, keep the edge and ward off any boredom that creeps up inbetween missions and operations.

This book is a must have, read, and heed for any individual wishing to become a part of America's Special Forces. The information about the communities themselves along with the nutritional advice are worth their weight in gold. If being a warrior is what you want then take advice from the warrior ellite themselves. Their workouts are challenging and keep you on your toes. The book is well written, simple to understand, and a good bedrock to start from. Semper Fi.

This is a great book if you are young, in shape, and looking to join the military. If you are not in great shape then adhering to the workouts in this book will be difficult. The typical workout in this book could also take hours which is realistic if you are a SEAL since you will be allotted long periods of time for excercise. However if you are an average Joe and don't have 2-3 hours to do a force march followed by a one hour workout this probably isn't the book for you.

This book contains a wealth of information that any hopeful for SOCOM would be a fool to miss out on. The men that wrote this book know what they are talking about. Stew Smith has not only completed BUD/S himself, he has helped countless others do the same thing. If you really want to be an "operator" then buy the book, and DO WHAT IT SAYS. It can't do the work for you, but it will show you what you need to do.

Plaited Glory: For Colored Girls Who've Considered Braids, Locks, and Twists

Plaited Glory: For Colored Girls Who've Considered Braids, Locks, and Twists"Plaited Glory" should have been written a long time ago. I am a young woman from Jamaica who, despite peer pressure and social pressure, has always kept my hair natural. I was so happy to find this book as I was growing my hair once again. I found Ms. Bonner's advice on hair care products and general care of black NATURAL hair very practical and useful. I am now locking my hair and read the hairlocking chapter of Ms. Bonner's book everyday. It is my "hair bible." I go to it whenever I have doubts about how I should treat my hair and what I should be doing to improve its health. I have recommended this book to many black women with natural hairstyles. Thank you for filling this obvious gap. It should not be so hard to find out how to care for NATURAl black hair, but your book is the best resource I've found to date. Most other books or articles give only an account of the history behind natural hairstyles. (Ms. Bonner, too, includes colourful and humorous stories in her book that illustrate society's view of natural hairstyles.) They don't provide information on how to groom and manage those styles. There should be many more books like this available to black women.

This book was the most down home honest book I ever read about black hair. Ms Bonner has an excellent sense of humor which made the book thoroughly enjoyable. I found myself in this book as Ms. Bonner recounted her trials and tribulations with her hair. Not only was this haircare book upbeat and funny but it also included tons of advice on the proper haircare. It also included numerous examples of natural hairstyles. I found this book impossible put down. In fact its in my hands now as I am typing this!

I am ready to move on to locks with no starting point. A friend recommended this book, Ohmigash am I glad she did. I learnt how to wash my hair, clean my roommates scalp, without disturbing her loc/coils/twist. The home remedies in this book really work I tried one the day after I read the book..... If your looking to learn our hair this book is a must have.

Lonnice has charm, wit and intelligence which comes bursting through the pages of this little book. While I am definitely in favor of chemical free hair (that means no chemical texturizing either) you can still use a lot of the info in this book. I have found that texturizing can be done naturally by cornrowing or twisting your hair. See Pamela Ferrell's book about this subject matter. I think you should include this book in your library as a reference guide because it does have some goods tips, especially about conditioning your hair. Some of the products can't be found anymore but hey there are others that can be substituted and as long as you understand the concept Lonnice is trying to convey who cares what the product is called, just do it.

I had become more and more interested in growing out my relaxer and wearing my hair natural. After finding enough information on the internet, and finally decided to do the big chop. I bough Lonnice Bonner's book so get some more tips on how to style and care for my hair. It's a really great, and very funny book which talks about Lonnice's personal hair experience. It gives great advice on how to care for natural hair, and shows some pictures and styles. The only reason I give it 4 stars and not 5, is because I was lookiing more for some intructions on how to actually do styles. But I would definitely recommend this book. It's an easy read.

The Ultimate Guide to Pregnancy for Lesbians: How to Stay Sane and Care for Yourself from Pre-concep

The Ultimate Guide to Pregnancy for Lesbians: How to Stay Sane and Care for Yourself from Pre-conception through Birth, 2nd EditionHooray! The second edition of this first-of-its-kind book has even more useful information and is totally up-to-date. The best thing about it is still the author's voice, which is strong and supportive -and funny -on every page. This book is infused with the wisdom of someone who's been through it all, back when there weren't any books about it, and is eager to shepherd others through the process. Equally encouraging are the many quotes from other dyke mamas (and mamas-to-be) describing their own experiences, from the justthinking-about-it stage to actually giving birth.

Some questions this book will help you think through: am I (are we) ready for kids? can I do it alone? how to choose a donor? what is it like, trying to get pregnant? what are my options if I don't get pregnant quickly? how will I handle being pregnant? what kind of birth do I hope for? what is it like for the non-bio mom? and what kind of family will we be in those early days?

In each case the author doesn't tell you what to do, but helps you figure out what YOU want to do. She clearly has her own preferences -unmedicated birth is best; circumcision sucks; breastfeeding rocks! -but they are carefully argued, pretty persuasive, and the tone is consistently pro-child and pro-women.

Sensibly, Pepper puts the tough stuff up front: the first chapter is about getting yourself as physically, mentally, financially and legally ready to start a family as you can possibly be. Then it's on to getting the goods, finding out what's going on under the hood, and starting the crazy ride on the conception "rollercoaster." The chapter offering Ten Tips to Keep You Sane during this crazy period is worth the price of the book alone!

These early chapters are the most detailed and probably the ones you'll read over and over, but there are also useful roadmaps to each trimester, as well as a helpful section on sexuality and pregnancy, birth options, and the early weeks with your baby. There's also a comprehensive index and a helpful section on extra resources, from lesbian-friendly sperm banks to useful books to dyke-mama blogs.

In a nice touch, the new edition is dedicated not only to "every lesbian dreaming baby dreams" but also "the many dyke daddies and tranny pops out there." Right on.

As a further bonus, the new cover is gorgeous, as is the photo of the author and her now seven year old daughter -clearly that rollercoaster was worth it! It all adds to the supportive, happy vibe of this indispensable guide to what the author calls "the wacky world of lesbian conception and pregnancy."

Rachel Pepper's new edition of her Ultimate Guide to Pregnancy for Lesbians is a welcomed event. With her clear writing and pull-no-punches style, Rachel takes the mystery and fear out of this amazing and popular process. Lesbians deserve to be spoken to in our own language, and this book is accessible and smart in the best ways. Things I didn't know I didn't know are answered fully, informatively, and often with a lightheartedness that reaches across the page to the reader so we can understand what's going on. I would recommend this book to any single or coupled lesbians who are thinking of embarking on the baby journey.

This is the most extensive pregnancy book for women who have to WORK at getting pregnant rather than starting at the "oops you're pregnant" point. If you're straight but single, lesbian, or partnered to a transman, this book is for you! Ms. Pepper is wonderful at being all-inclusive to all of her readers, including the family and partners of the pregnant woman. The book is positive and upbeat while still being serious and realistic. There is absolutely nothing I would change, add, or take away from this book and is worth keeping at your bedside if you're pregnant or beginning the process.

I'm really surprised at all the glowing reviews of this book! For me, the only thing setting it apart from a million other mediocre pregnancy books is the lesbian perspective, which I do appreciate. Overall, though, I found it pretty fluffy and not entirely reliable. The book gives an overview of numerous topics without providing a lot of detail on very many of them. This author's only qualification seems to be that she is a lesbian who had a baby, and she therefore offers tidbits of sometimes-dubious advice based on her own experience, such as...don't eat broccoli while you are pregnant? My midwife thought that one was hilarious.

I ordered this book along with Stephanie Brill's "New Essential Guide to Lesbian Conception, Pregnancy, and Birth," which I found to be MUCH more useful and informative. All of the same topics are covered there, but in more detail and with more authority -Brill is a renowned midwife and educator who has worked extensively with queer families. The Brill book provides WAY more detail and guidance on fertility charting, sperm banks, and insemination methods.

I am giving this book two stars because I think it's really important that there be pregnancy and birth resources geared specifically to queer women, and to the best of my knowledge, there are only really two such books out there. But trust me: The other one is much better.

Want The Ultimate Guide to Pregnancy for Lesbians: How to Stay Sane and Care for Yourself from Pre-concep Discount?

As someone who needs "assistance" getting pregnant, I especially appreciated the review of the different options for insemination and frank discussion of the positives and negatives to each. Most pregnancy books presume the reader is already pregnant, whereas the first 75 pages or so of this book are all about the process lesbians and anyone else who's not "getting pregnant the old fashioned way" go through to even get sperm near an egg for conception. A great resource, written by an author who has been there, not a medical establishment or doctor.
