Sound Mind, Sound Body: David Kirsch's Ultimate 6 Week Fitness Transformation for Men and Women

Sound Mind, Sound Body: David Kirsch's Ultimate 6 Week Fitness Transformation for Men and WomenThank you David you have changed my life! Forget the excuse that you are over 45 and it's too late to change your body! I have been following David's plan for one month, and have dropped 4% body fat, and no longer watch the scale to follow my weight loss. My clothes tell the truth! David's sincerity and desire to change your attitude about exercise and eating is apparent in every chapter. And the recipes are delicious and easy! Chapter 5 is the key and much of it has nothing to do with weight loss! I really believe that much of my success is due to grasping the importance of sound thinking usually missing in fitness books. What are my goals, what kind of inner strength do I possess, what is my passion?? You told me "I know you're going to succeed," and you were right!!! THANK YOU!!!

This book is quality and informative. He offers sound, easy to follow advice. No gimmicksit's spelled out for you in everyday terms ("reader friendly"). It's has detailed info on how to follow the plan, what to do/not do, fitness plans that are right for your body type, nutrition, etc.

My only complaint is that he doesn't write about any strength training exercises using weight machines at the gym. He just shows at-home exercises (which are also great and detailed). But some people like using machines sometimes.

I've read a lot of fitness/nutrition books and it's the same stuff, too complicated, or not interesting. But this is different. If you follow the plan, you'll see results!

I'm a 36-year old mother of 2, and have been trying for the last few years to find a workout routine that would fit into my busy schedule. Before I had kids, I went to the gym religiously for step aerobics and weight training. I really missed being in shape and being toned. I started doing yoga, and then pilates. When I came across David's book on the internet, it caught my attention. I've been doing David's workout for 5 months now, and I feel great! I've received many compliments from family and friends on how healthy and in shape I look. I love David's workout because I can do it anywhere I recently took a pair of dumbbells and the book with me on vacation. I also love the fact that the exercises are designed for everyone, no matter what body type/shape you are. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is looking for the path towards physical, emotional and spiritual wellness.

I only finished this book yesterday so I am just starting my 6-week program, but what I love about this book is David's sincere approach to helping people change, not only their bodies, but their lives. David's book has inspired me to stop making excuses for why I eat the way I do or why I skip my workouts and be honest with myself about my lifestyle. He makes me want to live a healthy, positive, inspiring life like his. But if you really just want to get in shape, this book gives you EVERY detail you need to do so. He even breaks down the workouts for 5 different body types so it's not difficult to understand. I have purchased several different diet and/or exercise books over the years and now I can throw them all away. David's book is my new bible.

David's program is unique because he gives you all the tools, information and motivation you need to design your own workout. No set number of reps, no set in stone program. He gives great suggestions for making exercise enjoyable and they work! This book is about getting your best body and it delivers! He is a gentle motivator and emphasizes the spiritual aspect which is the key to the programs success. This is the first program I have followed that I have loved. Did I mention the absolutely delicious recipes? I've never eaten this well before or felt so good.

I have been a follower of pilates, the Zone and Ann Louise Gittleman but they all lacked something for me. This combines the mental stimulation of pilates with the punch of a real workout. It is sensible, delicious eating that isn't as restrictive as Ann Louises programs yet you get the same results ( I did). And it's realhe says when you are in a bind, a Big Mac or spaghetti bolognese is the best option when you are on the go and don't have a lot to choose from and I love him for saying that! After reading that, I knew this was a plan that I could live with.

This, like any lifestyle change, takes commitment but if you are a beginnerthis is the best place to start.

The Unapologetic Fat Girl's Guide to Exercise and Other Incendiary Acts

The Unapologetic Fat Girl's Guide to Exercise and Other Incendiary ActsSo good for anyone who wants to get over whatever is keeping them from moving their body if you're fat, if you're scared of locker rooms, if you have a mobility impairment, if you think you're too old, if you're afraid of looking ridiculous, whatever. Blank has you covered.

I really, really wanted to be able to rate this book five stars. In the end, I couldn't quite do that.

The book is very well written; it's lively, witty, and fun to read. It's also well-structured and very accessible. Blank's bluntness about the plight of plus size people (and anyone else who doesn't fit the mold of young, slim, and athletic) and how it can affect their body practice psychologically is refreshing, to say the least. She put many of my emotions that I previously couldn't find expression for into words, clear cut and simple. I found this aspect of the book to be inspiring and encouraging...simply knowing that you're not alone in your fear and doubts is so important to getting through any complicated emotions. I particularly like her statement that you do NOT exist to decorate the world for others, which is something that holds many of us (women in particular) back from living freely, fully, and in the moment. I also liked the inclusion of a resource guide, although I didn't find it quite as helpful as I had hoped.

With all that said, I was really hoping for more practical guidance. She does include some, but it seemed to me the bulk of the book centered around encouraging you to get out there and just do it, rather than telling you HOW to do it. Most of the practical advice she does give centers around the gym. Since I don't use gyms (partially for emotional/psychological reasons addressed in the book, but also in large part because of an array of more practical concerns), I didn't get much out of it on that end of things. I was really hoping for more outside-of-the-box suggestions and practical guidance.

In the end, this book is a great motivational tool for those just getting started, and/or those who simply need to see how very not alone they are. But I did not get out of it what I had hoped to, that being a practical guide to expanding an already existing body practice. If you're looking for more of a mental/emotional guide, this book may be for you!

I've been telling folks that the theses of this book are "there is no wrong way to have a body" and "I can move however the heck, wherever the heck, whenever the heck, and whyever the heck I want to, and haters can get out of the way" (I might not have used "heck" when talking to folks.

This book gave me a whole new language and perspective to think and act on incorporating movement and fitness into my life. It reminded me that I can and should have a "body practice" just because it makes me feel awesome, and that changing my size doesn't have to have anything to do with it!

500 Handy Hints for Every Husband: Tips and Tools for Your Home, Yard, Garage, and WalletThis is an easy read. The book is filled with helpful, practical and relevant principles for life. The Family ADHD Solution: A Scientific Approach to Maximizing Your Child's Attention and Minimizing

The Family ADHD Solution: A Scientific Approach to Maximizing Your Child's Attention and Minimizing Parental StressI've read many books on ADHD and this is one of the best! (I'm an educator and have worked with ADHD students for over 16 years. I also have a parent and child with ADHD.) This book includes a comprehensive explanation of ADHD; it covers "clinical" information (backed by dozens of scientific research studies), but is written with great compassion for struggling families.

PART I-A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO ADHD: The cost of the book is well worth Part I alone! This section provides very clear, straightforward information about: the biology of ADHD, variety of symptoms, implications, and information to ensure an accurate diagnosis. On one hand, the information in this section is not "new," but the explanations are the most thorough and clear of anything I have read.

PART II-MINDFULLNESS IN ADHD CARE: In this section, Bertin introduces the scientific approach of using "mindfulness" to improve coping skills for dealing with ADHD. I have personal experience with this strategy; I learned a version of it 15 years ago to deal with chronic pain from rheumatoid arthritis and it was life-changing! I had never thought of using the same concepts to deal with the challenges of ADHD, but it makes perfect sense. This section includes sound, practical advice!

PART III-COMPREHENSIVE SUPPORT FOR FAMILIES & CHILDREN: This section covers a well-rounded scope of treatment options, both medical and non-medical. Once again, Bertin's chapter on "Medical Options" stands out as one of the best I've read because it addresses a wide scope of issues that are inherent to the ongoing debate over medical treatment for ADHD.

I've already recommended this book to several people: family, friends, and clients. If your life is impacted by ADHD, this book will be well worth your time and money!

As a pediatrician and a parent of a child with ADHD, I loved reading The Family ADHD Solution. Dr. Bertin approaches the challenges of raising a child with ADHD with warmth, humor and wisdom. He offers balanced and practical strategies for making family life more harmonious, using understanding to defuse conflict. Of particular value is the way Dr. Bertin introduces mindfulness to help parents face the ups and downs of ADHD with compassion and equanimity. I recommend this terrific book to any parent who wishes to develop a closer, more loving bond with their child.

You feel like he is in the room with you, telling you everything is going to be okay and giving you an approach that can start helping bring down your anxiety and help your child from the second you put the book down.

I recommend this to anyone first encountering a diagnosis or who has been living with ADHD in their family for years.

Healing Home Spa: Soothe Your Symptoms, Ease Your Pain, and Age-Proof Your Body with Pleasure

Healing Home Spa: Soothe Your Symptoms, Ease Your Pain, and Age-Proof Your Body with PleasureThis was a great book for do-it-yourselfers. I've enjoyed the different recipes that focus on different conditions. This did not introduce many different types of beauty products or treatments, but offered a tremendous amount of work in aromatherapy treatments for different types of conditions. It's a great book to keep on hand.

Don't let the name fool you. There is more to this book than "spa" recipes. It is full of common sense home remedies for more than 100 ailments including everything from vericose veins to alergies.

I am all about taking care of our health in a holist way. The great thing about this book is that, for me, it does two things at once. It gives natural remedies for health conditions that feel self-nurturing. I so appreciate that. Recently I had bronchitis and while I applied the natural remedies I felt pampered at the same time. Can't beat that ... especially when you're sick!!

Heal Your Life with Home Remedies and Herbs

Heal Your Life with Home Remedies and HerbsI would recommend any book written by Hanna Kroeger, but this one is absolutely essential to anyone interested in natural healing. In the introductory chapters, the author gives a description of the physical organs and subtle bodies and how to use the natural magnetic and electric powers of our bodies to heal ourselves and others. This sort of healing might be compared to what is most commonly known as "Reiki." The bulk of the book is a reference of diseases and disorders with herbs, vitamins and minerals that heal the specific conditions. This book is invaluable. I refer to it a few times a week. If you only own one book of home remedies, let it be this one.

It is never advertised on this book that so much of it deals with a unique spiritual outlook, such as with chakras, mind and body connections, and such. Because reading the back of the book, the front of it, or even in the title never lets the reader know this, I have to drop a point just for that alone. Usually it's clear if I'm buying a book just on herbalism, or on TCM, Ayurveda, etc....it should have been said here as well. Furthermore they didnt jump into the book right. It starts right off with the chakras as if the reader has already been given a few chapters before and just never read them.

Text is easy to understand and, while not written badly, it's clear Kroeger was more of a healer than a writer. Chapters are broken up rather abruptly and without warning -the same as their introductions.

Besides the unusual healing outlook, I did enjoy several things about this book. For one, the healing hands chapter speaks of some interesting things. While not all of them make sense to me, they are unique and worth reading about it. Curious on the nervous breakdowns and fallen arches, for example. Emotions is a chapter I did have issues with, as I never saw jealousy causing lung troubles, etc, my mind doesn't wrap around this. I'm not putting down anyone's beliefs that DO, but really no warning on this before buying the book?? The inner organ chapter was a saver, but overall just not my cup of tea.

Chapter fifteen is the "home remedies" This is all put in a simple table that lasts for pages and pages of the book. Simple: Health issue, then vitamin minerals box, then finally Spices/Herbs/Kitchen Aids reading straight across. It's all jotted this way without words for sentences. This is the herbal remedies and recommendations. How .... enlightening. There is obviously not enough to room to really list WHY the remedies are there, what she's seen happen with them, etc, etc, just a jot down of what to do.

This 'Table' lasts from 113 to 291.

Really I do admire Hanna Kroeger, she was an amazing woman and healer. This book, though, is not something I'd recommend to anybody. It does have a large amount of information, but on what exactly I don't really know at all times. Some of the info is scanty at best, and the quick jotted home remedies in a table with only 3 sections across sadly isn't what I expected.

If you are a fan of Kroeger, read this book, but otherwise pick something else up.

Making the Best of Basics: Family Preparedness Handbook

Making the Best of Basics: Family Preparedness HandbookI am researching information on preparedness and storage. My main focus started with foods. In this day in age I feel some of the best insurance we can all have is food, fuel, water/water filtration and enough cash to carry us through at least 6 months of hard times in the event we lost our jobs or any other type of natural or manmade disaster.

I purchased more than 40 of the most recommended books on food storage, survival and preparedness. This book would replace all but three of those books. (I have purchased over 200 on preparedness subjects)

This book covers everything imaginable and targets everyone including those who don't have much money to begin with to those who have more than enough. Start with this book first. If you feel you want more information that covers urban survival, survival medicine, growing your own food, security and protection etc... send me an email request for the subjects you are most interested in and I will gladly forward you a list of the best of everything I have found this far after more than two years of intense research on the subject.

It doesn't make any sense for me to write my own book on the subject since there is so much information already out there... So I decided to just help all of you take advantage of my experimenting so you don't have to invest in all the books and products that I have already invested in, used and researched. Save your money and send me an email at gaspdesign@earthlink.net and write; "Help me get ready" in the subject line. Tell me what you want more information on (food storage, gardening, preparedness supplies, emergency power, first aid, etc) and I will guide you to the best books and products including some that are sold here that can be downloaded for free online. No charge. I just think we all need to stick together and help each other out through all the difficult times. I won't be selling anything and I won't be giving your information away or selling it. I wish I would have had someone help me save by offering the same help to me.

Again... this book is the best all around complete guide if you only buy one book.

I love the Making the Best of Basics Family Preparedness Handbook. It covers SO much.

This book has a ton of charts, pictures, diagrams and worksheets to help you determine what you need (and what you need to DO) to live a life of being prepared.

Something I liked about this book in particular, is that it is LIFESTYLE oriented, instead of just being a book about preparing for emergencies. The book does talk about different levels of preparedness (survival vs. can maintain a semi-normal lifestyle no matter the circumstances), but most of the suggestions and information seem to be geared towards thorough (not basic) preparation. That was what I wanted, so I am happy with that.

There are chapters on emergency kits, a "family preparedness household notebook", in-home storage, having an "In-Home Convenience Store", storage problems and solutions, water, dairy products, sprouting, honey, wheat, sourdough, dehydrating fruits and vegetables, preparing meats, energy and fuels, supplementation, essential oils, reducing stress, essential oils, genetic engineering, creating a preparedness library, and acquiring gold and silver.

The explanations and recipes make everything seem pretty easy to do. Sometimes I felt like the worksheets did not have adequate instructions with them. There isn't always as much instruction as some books offer; for instance, the home inventory doesn't go by room or suggest common items--it is simply a list of blank spaces and you're supposed to fill them in.

Some good things about this book are:

lists of advantages and disadvantages for various options (types of food storage, types of water filtration, types of lighting, etc)

change of lifestyle approach (vs. emergency prep only)

good balance of overview vs. detail

useful charts and worksheets (eg, sprouting info charts)

many, many other references listed, including encouragement to begin a preparedness library

"begin where you are" approach

holistic approach (stress, essential oils, supplementation)

many simple recipes

What this book is NOT:

this book is not a first-aid book

this book is not a "survival" book (although one of the ways that you prepare is by making an emergency kit, this book does not discuss what to do in actual emergencies very much)

this book is not the only book you'll ever need (eg, even if you like the chapter on cheese or sprouting, you will likely want to buy a book that expands on that topic specifically)

In conclusion, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book. It is an excellent PREPAREDNESS handbook (but not the only book you'll ever want, nor does it claim to be). Making the Best of Basics teaches people to live mindfully, preparing for the future instead of wasting money on things that don't really do us much good. I think this is a good way to live. I think this book is an excellent value, too--you get a whole lot for what you pay, and it gets you started with a lot of good things.

(I have the 12th Edition (in print). Not of the difference between it and previous editions.)

The Edgar Cayce Remedies

The Edgar Cayce RemediesThis is a good book. I like that it not only describes Edgar Cayce's trance suggestions and philosophy of healing but that it is written by Dr. William McGarey who used to be one of the founding doctors of the medical clinic in Phoenix, Arizona that used the Cayce readings when appropriate to cure many illnesses, even those considered incurable.

However, because of the title of the book, I expected it to be a listing of various Cayce remedies such as herbs, lotions, foods. Instead, it lists remedies to undertake for various types of ailments. It's written in three parts. The first describes the functioning of the human body. The second sections lists various types of healing regimens suggested in the Cayce readings such as castor oil packs, prayer and meditation, and consulting dreams plus more conventional types of healing regimens such as diet and nutrition, exercise, manipulation, and massage. The third section is the best because it lists various body systems such as the digestive organs, the skin, and the heart and vascular system, and describes how to get that system healthy and keep it healthy.

I find it very helpful to get a sense of how the body works from Cayce's very holistic perspective. However, I would have preferred that when Cayce readings are mentioned, that they be quoted and the numbers of the readings listed as they are in The Edgar Cayce Handbook for Health Through Drugless Therapy.

If you are interested in listings of various healing regimens, there's Edgar Cayce Encyclopedia of Healing (Edgar Cayce) that lists various ailments and their cures and An Edgar Cayce Encyclopedia of Foods for Health and Healing, which lists foods and food combinations suggested to heal various physical incoordinations, plus Edgar Cayce on Healing Foods for Body, Mind, and Soul, another books on the foods and food combinations recommended in the Cayce readings.

A good book but I'd choose The Edgar Cayce Handbook for Health Through Drugless Therapy first because it is a "how to" of the Cayce remedies and it quotes the readings directly including their reading numbers.

By Carol Chapman, award-winning photographer of the ONLY Edgar Cayce calendar Divine in Nature: With Quotes from Edgar Cayce and author of When We Were Gods: Insights on Atlantis, Past Lives, Angelic Beings of Light and Spiritual Awakening.

Edgar Cayce was, and still is, a force of nature. Not being old enough to remember the man myself, I have found a lot of the information in the book was in common usage in the days of my grandparents. Perhaps his influence at that time was more widespread than I ever knew and now, with the modern medical machinery in place, his knowledge is resurfacing out of need. I found the book fascinating, educational, common-sensical, and opportunistic in it's availability to me when I needed to investigate other avenues of medicine. I would recommend this book to anyone, especially those who believe that a little TLC, some positive affirmations, and a more nature-driven potency can, and will, cure or alleviate ailments on more than one level.
