Natural First Aid: Herbal Treatments for Ailments & Injuries/Emergency Preparedness/Wilderness Safet

Do you know that cayenne pepper can stop bleeding? Or that garlic can alleviate a toothache? Or that honey can soothe a burn?
I was impressed with NATURAL FIRST AID. It's easy to read and understand and there is nothing extreme about the natural remedies. I highly recommend it to everyone. The idea behind this book was good, and there was certainly plenty of good information in it for someone new to natural/homeopathic first aid. Unfortunately, I didn't find the format particularly constructive and I felt there were too many missing pieces for this to really be much help.
First of all, this book is set up only to supplement modern medical care. Each topic starts with criteria for seeking medical attention; that's fine, but not really in keeping with the wilderness safety or preparedness themes listed on the cover. Both those themes suggest a lack of available medical attention, which would be the primary motivation to look at natural alternatives in the first place.
More problematically, the book either takes for granted certain knowledge or assumes that you will do more explanatory supplemental research elsewhere. No form is given for many of the suggested herbal remedies, leaving one to wonder as to whether we're supposed to have stocked up on that at the health food store ahead of time or should know what it looks like in the wild and how to prepare it.
All things considered, there is some worthwhile information in here about how to respond to common health issues like overheating, bruises, sprains, poison ivy, etc., but I wouldn't consider it much of a functional on-hand reference. This informative book is written in such a way that it is easy to read and extremely informative with a perfect amount of photography. An excellent addition to any library.I am very into natural first aid so this book was such a great starter for me. I think many will enjoy it.
Weight Watchers Family Power: 5 Simple Rules for a Healthy-Weight Home (Miller-Kovach, Weight Watche

The book trains parents on the "5 Simple Rules."
1. Focus on wholesom, nutritious foods.
2. Include treats.
3. Aim to keep nonhomework screen time at two hours (or less) per day.
4. Try to be active an hour per day.
5. The Rules apply to everyone in the home.
While that should tell you all you need to know about the program there is so much more. My daughter 4, does not currently have a weight issue, however as an over obese person since childhood I watch her closely to attempt to prevent her from having the same weight issues I have. I was shocked to learn all of the things I am doing wrong. Everything from what snacks/treats I give her to forcing her to clean her plate, and at least a dozen other things.
One of the things I loved about this book it there was no encouragement to make drastic life altering adjustments to your life. In fact, the book encourages gentler simple steps your family can carry out. It doesn't tell you what order to complete the rules in, but to start with the ones you know you can do. The book offers real life concerns and solutions that even the most out of shape family can take to heart.
The book also discourages you from weighing your children more than when they are at the physician's office or even discussing weight in front of them. If anyone in your house struggles with their weight this book is a must have. I wish it had been available to my parents when I was young, I only hope I can learn enough from it to prevent the same mistakes in my children.ONCE I STARTED READING THIS BOOK I COULDN'T BELIEVE HOW SIMPLE IT IS TO MAKE SMALL CHANGES THAT MAKE A HUGE POSITIVE INFLUENCE ON MY FAMILY. FAMILY POWER IS AN EASY TO FOLLOW, EYE OPENING, BOOK THAT HAS HELPED ME GET MY FAMILY ON THE RIGHT TRACK FOR ONCE. I DIDN'T REALIZE HOW I HAD MYSELF SO TRAINED TO UNCONSCIOUSLY RAISE A LAZY FAMILY UNTIL I STARTED USING THE STEPS IN THIS BOOK. I AM NOW GOING TO MAKE SURE MY CHILDREN DON'T DEVELOP THE LAZY HABITS THAT GO HAND IN HAND WITH OBESITY. IT'S A GREAT EYE OPENER!!! GOOK LUCKThis is a very easy book to read, and the suggestions it offers are real and practical. You don't have to change your entire lifestyle, and that's what I liked about the book. And too, the five steps it recommeds have already been put into use by families, and they've all been proven to work. It definately has helped my family. I've already seen a difference in waist size and attitude. This is a great book to help families learn how to eat better and get healthier!
Lots of information and on suggestions on how to make it a family effort!
I totally recommend it!
One of the best books WW's has put out!Great book that will give all the rules for keeping a family slim. Don't let your kids and family become what you don't want them to be. Learn to keep yourself and your family fit and trim.

The Amazing Fitness Adventure for Your Kids: 90 Days to Raising Healthy Children

I love this because Phil and Amy understand why our kids are in the situations that we find our families in. They get that we are so busy, and that most of the time, it's just easier to go to the drive-thru and (sometimes) let our kids play video games. They don't harp on us as parents and call us failures. Instead, they give us the tools to make a difference. It's not only our responsibility to teach our kids to be more physically fit than society dictates, it can be one of the best lessons we ever share with them.
I love that this book isn't condescending or judgmental, but is informative and totally helpful. Besides listing facts and stating the problems of kids, their sedimentary lifestyles, and their corresponding weights, Amy and Phil give us the tools and motivation to change things.
This guide provides science, menu planning advice, activity ideas, as well as thoughtful discussion to get your entire family involved. It's truly a must-have resource for any family, even those without kids who are considered overweight. It will be a gift that will benefit many generations. Highly recommend! As a mom of 7 that was extremely overweight and just finished a weight loss journey of my own by losing 72 lbs over the last 7 months, this book really spoke to me. I want to make sure that my kids don't go through what I did and that I can help teach them some good tools to keep them from ever reaching the extreme high weight that I did. This book is a wonderful tool for that. The first half is really good to know educational information and the second half is how to implement good habits into your life over the next 90 days with your family. Very easy to read, well laid out and encouraging this book is designed to help families make realistic changes that will set them up to live long lives together. I will be going through this book with my kids this year. I hope many families read this book to get a hold of the wisdom that Amy and Phil have gained the hard way so that their families don't have to go through the same thing.
