Saving your life one day at a time

Saving your life one day at a timeI have just finished reading Saving Your Life One Day at a Time. I am often asked by patients and students where to get the information they need to help themselves. I now have a great resource to point them to. Dr. Sugarman points the way for people to begin the process of changing their life by making small changes that payoff over a lifetime. My favorite sections dealt with movement and breathing. These topics are rarely dealt with by other authors. If you want to get a head start on stopping pain and disability before they start or if you want to deal with such things right now read and follow the steps laid out in this book. That is the message I am giving to my patients.

After spending years in the trenches with world-class performers, I've been afforded the opportunity to have conversations with brilliant minds. Dr. Roy Sugarman leads those conversations by continually challenging conventional wisdom with his rich insights and practical applications to create optimal living. He lives what he writes and his writings illuminate simple and powerful methods to dramatically enhance the quality of life's experiences. When it comes to getting it elegantly right, Dr Sugarman nailed it. If you're interested in changing and enhancing the quality of your life -if you're interested in living a high performing life -you'll likely find this book difficult to put down. His insights are compelling and practical.

Alzheimer's: A Caretaker's Journal

Alzheimer's: A Caretaker's JournalThe thing I felt about the book was that it seemed to offer a positive outlook on something a disease, the downfall of a loved one, the loss of an important connection between father and child that seemingly had nothing positive to offer. Some of the situations were gut wrenching, and yet, Marie not only came through them, but has now become an inspiration to others who are going through it now. Thats an honorable and difficult task in the face of something so difficult. Reading of some of the situations faced by Marie and her family shows clearly that their journey was wrought with hardship, yet this guide will inspire even the most tireless caregiver to keep giving, keep striving, keep going forward in this thankless journey of giving back to the loved ones who once cared for you and others.

If you are looking for a gift to help an Alzheimer's caregiver, I recommend this book.

Alzheimer's: A Caretaker's Journal by Marie Fostino and published by Seabord Press in late 2007 is one of those rare family caregiver books written in real time. Unlike many caregiving books written as recollections of caregiving experiences from years ago, Fostino's book is fresh, compelling, vivid, and poignant. It accomplishes its aim in helping the caregiver know what to expect.

What a gift! Joe Fostino had a saint for a daughter-in-law! How else can one describe the heroic deeds simply told? The highs, the lows; the joys, the tears; the frustrations, even the anger; and the commitment--yes, the unwavering commitment of a loving mother of five who devotedly cared for her father-in-law in a manner unparalled during the past decade.

Alzheimer's: A Caretaker's Journal begins with a brief history of war hero Joe Fostino and features letters from Joe's son (the author's husband) and two of her five children. Fostino then opens her private journal for the benefit of caregivers, family members, and all who want to learn more about caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's disease.

If you're a caregiver or plan to be one, do yourself a favor, buy this book! If you know of a caregiver who could use a helping hand, give this book as a gift. If you are a professional, share copies of this book with your clients.

You will be warmly touched and heavenly inspired by the story of St. Marie Fostino, who juggled long work hours while lovingly tending to her father-in-law's day-to-day needs for two years until his final breath.

Marie Fostino's book, Alzheimers, a Caretaker's Journal, is a welcome resource for anyone struggling to care for a family member with this heart wrenching disease. The most important aspect, beyond the practical day-to-day experiences shared, is the gift of knowing that you are not alone, that there are others out there who have lived, and are living, what you are going through. Thank you, Marie, for your gift!

As the title implies, Alzheimer's A Caretaker's Journal, is about dealing with a family member who has Alzheimer's. The book truly is a caretakers journal. There is little commentary from the author to cloud our opinion. Instead, we get to see into the personal lives of Jim and Marie as they take on the daunting task of caring for Jim's father, Joe. As Joe's dementia worsens, Marie rises to the call of a saint.

The passion of the author was noted throughout the book and my emotions were stirred as I read Marie's account of her time spent with Dad--a man who didn't even know her once he had progressed into the advanced stages of Alzheimer's. "Lady" is what he called his own daughter-in-law.

"Show, not tell" is what I often repeat to my authors when I am editing their books. Marie instinctively did this in Alzheimer's A Caretaker's Journal. She shows us who she is, what she is capable of, and how she managed day by day. Never once did she brag on herself. Using a chronological diary format, she showed us her human frailty and gave us a true picture of what it is like to watch a loved one's mental and physical demise.

I was especially touched that both of the author's daughters gave a short commentary about what it was like to live in the house with their grandfather in his impaired condition. The author's husband, Jim, also shared his thoughts. Therefore, we get to see how this disease affected the entire family. I hope I never have to go through something like this, but if I do, I pray I have the strength and wherewithal to endure and persevere the way Marie did.

Join the Caring, Patient Marie Fostino and her Kind Family as they help their father, grandfather and father-in-law, Joseph A. Fostino, struggle through ALZHEIMER'S disease.

First off, Joseph A. Fostino lived and served in the military during the great depression and was awarded the BRONZE STAR for his bravery during WORLD WAR TWO (WW2). Joseph was a loving husband and father.

In her touching diary form, Marie shares her experiences with her father, Joseph, as he struggles through one of the most horrific of diseases--ALZHEIMER'S. Marie is a lady of tremendous compassion, and so is her family. I was touched by this story.

It's not pleasant to see someone you love deteriorate mentally, spiritually and emotionally. The effects of ALZHEIMER'S disease is a HUGE epidemic amongst our senior citizens GLOBALLY.

I highly recommend ALZHEIMER'S: A CARETAKER'S JOURNAL by Marie Fostino. It will touch you heart and hopefully, help you understand those who deal with chronic disease.

The Consumer Reports Guide to Childproofing & Safety: Tips to Protect your Baby and Child from Injur

The Consumer Reports Guide to Childproofing & Safety: Tips to Protect your Baby and Child from Injury at Home and on the GoEvery parent should read this comprehensive, easy-to-read and understand guide to child safety at home, outdoors, and in the car. There is an enormous amount of information so I suggest parents, especially new parents, do a quick read to learn about hazards in familiar surroundings and what parents can do to prevent injury. Then when you are ready to buy a bicycle and helmet carefully re-read that section in the chapter, "On the Go" which also covers strollers, skates, and how to be a safe pedestrian. This book is so comprehensive I could only come up with one omission: under food safety I would have added food spoilage and hazards like bacterial contamination of purchased food urging parents to keep abreast of food recalls and warnings. Might a new parent feel overwhelmed thinking about all the possible dangers in their child's world? Maybe, but better safe than sorry. Plus the book will help a parent develop a "safety reflex" so you automatically turn in the pot handle even though there are no toddlers around. Plus you will be modeling that safety reflex for your kids which will help keep your future grandchildren safe.

Great book for first time parents in understanding what to childproof, but I wish there were more how to install instructions. I also wish that they'd give more information on people to "hire" to help you. It just didn't give enough information. It's a good start though.

This isn't what you expect from consumer reports. All this book does is tell you what you need for baby-proofing your home. You can find this information anywhere on the internet. Their other books and their monthly magazine review different products and let you know which ones were better so you know what brand to buy. After reading this you still have to research what the better brands are.

Do you have a subscription to Consumer Reports online? Then you can skip this book and just surf for the latest reviews. Otherwise, this is a fine little book to prepare you on what to look for, what questions to ask. It's actually a little thin on specific recommendations -not every product has a review per se -and be forewarned: there are no recommendations on car seats, as they are re-evaluating their safety criteria on car seats/crash worthiness. You may be just as well off getting the recommended list from your registry at Babies-R-Us or Target or wherever, and looking at the online customer reviews of the products.

Steampunk Your Wardrobe: Easy Projects to Add Victorian Flair to Everyday Fashions (Design Originals

Steampunk Your Wardrobe: Easy Projects to Add Victorian Flair to Everyday FashionsSteampunk Your Wardrobe: Easy Projects to Add Victorian Flair to Everyday Fashions lives up to its title. After a brief definition of steampunk fashion, the author gives instructions for creating 20 trimmings, accessories, and garments, preferably from items thrifted or from the back of the reader's closet. The projects focus on the most conservative steampunk tropes: for example a necklace with key pendants, a mini top hat, a ruffled choker, and two appealing methods of ruching up long skirts. The author substitutes a plain black leather waist cincher for the common external corset made of brocade or satin. Largely missing are the more hardwarey, techy items such as goggles and gears. Oddly, also missing is the ubiquitous short bustle-overskirt, made of several ruffles of fancy materials sewn to a band, to be tied over the back of a skirt.

Some projects are not perceptibly steampunk. For example, a shoulder cape cut from the upper part of an oversized coat made of camel-colored wool, with two conservative brown leather toggles added. Many lack the flair and exuberance that would turn them from rather tacky makeovers to steampunk. It's an intriguing and practical idea to, instead of wearing thin external drawers, shorten a pair of suit pants in charcoal gray wool, and then add lace ruffles. But the lace ruffles should be a statement, not the narrow, meagerly gathered, cheap-looking little bands shown here. Then there is a bright red nylon lace circle top with wobbly stitching that is simply unfortunate.

The descriptions are somewhat lacking in detail for beginners, but this seems to have been required to fit 20 projects into a 103-page book. They are supplemented by good-quality photos, though most beginners will wish for additional technical shots. The real problem is the loving-hands-at-home look that pervades all projects. While I assume the publisher imposed space constraints, I wish the author had included techniques for finishing seams, hemming edges, and otherwise making higher-quality garments. For example, she could have just asked readers to use ribbons and scalloped laces for the layered, ruffled choker, instead of strips of fabrics that are shown fraying all over. And even though the projects are for beginners, it would be more inspiring to see them carried out with a professional degree of skill and taste. Take the wool shoulder cape made from a coat, mentioned above. According to the instructions, the coat is cut off at the level of the underarm seams, though the photos clearly show it at waist level, which is a better proportion but which would require some undescribed method of merging the upper sleeves into the body of the coat. It is unclear from the instructions and photos what is done with the lining. However, the outside of the coat shows the bottom of the wool bound in black cotton-poly bias binding--the usual narrow kind found at the notions counter for binding internal seams. This edge is finished, but that's all you can say for it. This shoulder cape would have been positively elegant with a wider outer facing in velvet or velveteen (a brown plaid print cut on the bias would be lovely), or with rich faux fur trimming. True, the author tells readers to vary her ideas at will--but for the most attractive results, they are positively required to.

This book is suitable for beginners who want quick gratification and who are willing to toss their projects aside after a few wearings. And for experienced sewists who know how to--and are willing to--fill out and modify the instructions to produce polished, durable garments. Steampunk isn't really about ruffles or gears: it's about style.

Terrific book for those who are interested in dressing with a little steampunk & victorian 'flair'! Projects are geared for folks with basic sewing and crafting skills perfect for a beginner and myself, new to the genre.

Particularly interested in the feather fascinator and the shoulder wrap have finished the feather fascinator and my daughter loves it! Highly recommend and hope Calista Taylor does more books on victorian or other historic period fashions Kudos!

I was so glad when the book arrived. I was afraid that the items pictured, the patterns and instructions would be beyond me but I was happily wrong. The items are fairly inexpensive with respect to materials especially if, like me, you go to thrift stores. The patterns are very straight forward and the instructions are simple, of course the pictures included are a big help. I am Trying to decide on colors but expect to have my own "Steam Punk" outfit soon.

This is an excellent idea book for steampunk fashion, and concentrates on modifying existing clothing rather than creating from scratch.

That said, some of the techniques explained to modify the clothing is a little unnerving for a tailor. Much of the explanations are 'cut straight' without explaining how to avoid crooked hanging, or to leave excess for seam allowance, or to go off basic measurements and folded paper rather than an actual fitting or a pattern. This can lead to bad habits in young sewers.

Still, for a beginner, this book would be great for ideas.

Taking Care of Your Child: A Parent's Guide to Complete Medical Care

Taking Care of Your Child: A Parent's Guide to Complete Medical CareI received this book as a freebie, part of a very smart corporation's plan to get their employees to take better care of themselves and their children, presumably, of course, to thereby lessen the overall insurance burden.

Never-the-less, with the probable exception of the dictionary, it's been the most referenced book on my shelves over the last 15 years since my first child was born. I treasure its simple wisdom and sensible approach and it has helped me both to ignore certain complaints and to act quickly upon others during that time.

As for the rather embittered review which claims it's full of dangerously misleading information, I'd have to disagree (although it's important to note those comments were made in reference to feeding issues, an area -unlike meningitis, for instance, or a fall which resulted in a jagged bone protruding -in which there's still a fair bit of debate).

No, it shouldn't be used as a sole source of information, nor should it completely replace your own good judgement AND instinct. However, for any number of every day ailments and injuries that any parent will encounter with their children, its generally sound guidance will be most welcome in helping you arrive at a conclusion whether to phone the doctor or not.

Being a parent is often enough like playing pin the tail on the donkey in the dark -this book, however, WILL shine a bit of light where you might need it most.

This is an excellent book for new parents. I just love the flow charts which are great when you need answers in a hurry.

Our pediatrician told us to buy this book on our prenatal visit, about 30 years ago. It was an excellent source and can help calm a new parent and save on wasted trips to the doctor. I loved the flowchart method of telling you whether to call the doctor or not. Of course, if you are unsure or the book did not cover the exact symptoms you still should call the pediatrician. Now I am going to buy it for our daughter to use on our grandchildren.

The Healthy Living Space: 70 Practical Ways to Detoxify the Body and Home

The Healthy Living Space: 70 Practical Ways to Detoxify the Body and HomeThis book seems to cover every possible topic relating to creating a healthier and less toxic home and body. The author addresses products that most of use everyday and points out the potential hazards.

How many of us would consider a long hot relaxing bath a potentially toxic experience? After reading this book you will understand why it is important to have a whole house water filtration system and to choose carefully your bath products.

I was not aware of all the products in my home that potentially contained volatile organic compounds (VOCs) before reading this book. Some examples of products that typically contain VOCs are dry cleaned clothes, common household cleaners, chlorinated water, tobacco smoke, treated fabric, pressed wood products, building insulation, cosmetics, carpet, plastic, moth balls and deodorizers. If any of these items surprise you, this might be a good book for you.

Are you still using fabric softener in your laundry? This book references a group called CITIZENS FOR A TOXIC FREE MARIN CALIFORNIA that claims there are at least 9 toxic compounds in many brands of fabric softener. I had read about the toxicity of fabric softener in the past. However, this information was enough for me to switch to green laundry products. Why risk your health for something so trivial as fluffy and highly perfumed fabrics.

I don't know that I believe all the information in this book. However, much of the information just seems like common sense. Artificial products/chemicals may be contributing to other health related problems in our homes and our lives. It makes sense to avoid as many of these as we can. The author makes you think about the products that enter your home and your life. I have learned to close every window in my home for a few days when the lawn services are applying toxic chemicals in my neighbors' yards. Just think what those chemicals are doing to the children and pets that play in the grass.

If you are interesting in learning more about green living this is excellent resource.

Detox diets and cleanses, dry skin brushing, dental tips, green cleaning, feng shui, meditation and much, much more. Mr. Leviton covers every aspect of your life in this guide. He includes good instructions on how to do everything along with recipes and where to buy the things you need for the various detoxes. I bought this book after a very disappointing experience with a different detox book. This one is hands down GREAT!

Buy The Healthy Living Space: 70 Practical Ways to Detoxify the Body and Home Now

This is, for the most part, a pretty good book that jam packs a myriad of ways that everyone can follow to detoxify and enjoy greater health. However, it seems that, as most health journalists seem to follow this fundamental flaw, they do not give a pure scientific review to every piece of material, and thus, by taking the word of some authority figure, they take the word as truth.

An example of this would be where he suggests a sodium hypochlorite (bleach) produce wash. Firstly, no studies have ever shown that any such wash, whether it being diluted bleach or the like, have been significantly better at removing residues than pure water. Secondly, sodium hypochlorite is a corosive poison that acts as an irritant, can cause respiratory problems, neurotoxicity, cancer, endocrine disruption, and other various issues. What's even more odd is that he got this piece of advice from a Naturopathic doctor's book; how on Earth could a Naturopath recommend this?

So with that, while generally has quite a bit of good information, make sure to read the book critically, and question EVERYTHING! Be your own scientist and do your own research!

I always try to live as healthy, sustainably, organically, etc as possible. But, I also lead a practical life. I gave up toxic cleaners long ago and typically only use baking soda, vinegar and a few essential oils. I make my own detergent (laundry and dishwasher), my own cleaning supplies, shampoo, etc. This book was mostly fluff and it ranged to the deranged. Too new age-y for my taste. I live in the real world and require real solutions, I found this to be an unhelpful resource. (I didn't just read it, I own it...I've read through it multiple times and still find it to be a waste) Much shorter books with much more useful information exist out there...don't waste your money on this one.

Far more common household and personal care products contain toxic substances than many of us realize. Those toxins affect our bodies and may lead to serious illness. At the least, they can reduce the quality of life by making us feel less than vibrant and healthy.

Richard Leviton is a health journalist and author with more than twenty-five years experience. The Healthy Living Space is his eighth book.

In it, he offers "70 practical steps on how to use safe, proven, nontoxic, self-care methods drawn from the fields of natural and alternative medicine." Leviton not only explains how to detoxify, he also explains why. He also emphasizes that it's important to detoxify both home and body, as the poisons accumulated in both can make you sick.

He begins with an eye-opening inventory of substances most of us are exposed to every day. He then describes some of the health symptoms people suffer. Many of these symptoms can be vague or subtle, leading health-care professionals to either mis-diagnose or label sufferers as hypochondriacs. Instead they need to be treated as early-warning signals of what may become severe health problems.

Leviton says "the truth is that we are being slowly poisoned, because although the toxins are potent, we are rarely exposed to a lethal or even sub-lethal, but dangerous, dose. We are instead routinely exposed to very small doses of many toxic chemicals, which together overwhelm our body's natural detoxification system." He says the key is to recognize that toxicity is occurring so slowly that most of us don't realize it until too late.

Because few of us can entirely avoid all toxic substances, Leviton explains how we can reduce our exposure, while at the same time strengthening our body's ability to resist damage from the elements we are exposed to. He includes chapters on emotional and spiritual detoxification as well as extensive information on physical detoxification. The chapters on detoxifying homes describe how to remove common pollutants, as well as utilize the more esoteric techniques like feng shui.

Whether we realize it or not, all of us know what it feels like to live in a toxic environment. The Healthy Living Space provides readers with the practical information and tools they need to create healthy bodies and homes.
