The Big Bento Box of Unuseless Japanese Inventions (101 Unuseless Japanese Inventions and 99 More Un

The Big Bento Box of Unuseless Japanese InventionsI wrote and published this review in The Journal of Irreproducible Results, vol. 49, no. 6, November 2005:

Rube Goldberg founded the modern era of humorous inventions in the US, and Heath Robinson did the same in the UK, in the first half of the 1900s. Even now, "Rube Goldberg contraptions" call to mind not only his cartooning style but his inventive wit.

The genre simplified and expanded with Jacques Carelman's The Catalogue of Fantastic Inventions (St. Martins, 1984), and Steven M. Johnson's What the World Needs Now (Ten Speed, 2001). David E. H. Jones takes a decidedly more scientific, less cartooned approach in The Inventions of Dædalus (Freeman, 1982) and The Further Inventions of Dædalus (Oxford University Press, 1999).

When the genre twisted and turned to Japan, it developed into Chindogu. If a humorous invention serves a real, everyday purpose ... but not well; if it is actually made and photographed; if its humor is a byproduct of solving a problem ... then it may be "chindogu". See www.chindogu.com. A bento box is a multi-purpose lunchbox, but that concept is the merest appetizer for these.

200 inventions fill 300 pages in this charming full-color compendium. Many are in classes by themselves, such as the nail-polish dryer for 5 fingers at once. But certain issues recur:

* Attach mops to crawling babies, pets, and shoes.

* Portable signage allows you to unroll a zebra-crosswalk at a convenient place in the road; to put a women's-restroom sign over a men's; and to mark parking space lines around your car, wherever you leave it.

* An extra hand can cover your mouth politely; hold veggies perilously close to a cutting knife; and even help count fingers.

* Umbrellas could be supported from a hat or headbelt, or little ones attached to shoes or camera, or given full-length transparent sides to keep you dry all the way down.

* Just as a Swiss Army knife combines many hand tools, a giant handle could combine gardening tools; pockets in a necktie or hooks on a belt could hold office necessities; hooks on an apron could hold kitchen utensils; and each finger of a glove could be tipped with its own tool.

Shoes, crowded subways, and taking snapshots also come up often.

Sure enough, I found no use for any item in the whole book. But many motifs, several methods, and some attitudes look like I ought to be able to apply them somewhere or other, either for a laugh or for something (chindogu notwithstanding) actually useful.

By the way, while "humorous inventions" seems like a category, libraries haven't invented a single number to find them under. I found some in art (NC1429, NC1499, NK1125); in science at Q167, and in technology at T20 and this one at T27. In Dewey, check 741.5.

(2008 HOLIDAY TEAM)I took one look at this amusing book and immediately understood why only the Japanese would revel in these wacky inventions which they call "chindogu". As a Japanese-American myself, I understand the high value placed on self-sufficiency and time-efficiency in their daily existences. After all, these are the people who came up with sleeping tubes and subway passenger pushers. Designer and author Kenji Kawakami and translator Dan Papia promote 200 of these funky devices that range from the conceivably helpful to the hysterically absurd. The humor comes from not only the devices but also the straight-faced photos of the devices in action and the accompanying text that captures the pure huckster cheese of an airline mail-order magazine. Kawakami provides the top ten tenets of chindogu to set the stage for what follows. He considers a chindogu a failure if it is slightly useful, a success if it captures the spirit of anarchy. They cannot be invented simply for humor. They must exist as a prototype but never be patented or sold. Kawakami understands that there is no gadget so unuseless that somebody out there would not buy it if offered, and in this regard, the Japanese have shown more discretion than Americans who would submit their patent applications on a dime.

Expect to giggle quite a bit perusing this book, and here are a few of my particular favorites:

* Diet dishes rice bowls cut in half with a mirror inserted to make them seem like full bowls, marketed with the tagline "Satisfy your hunger with a culinary optical illusion".

* Portable subway straps straps hung on a suction cup that you would place on the ceiling of a particularly crowded subway car. I could easily see using this on BART during rush hour.

* Hay fever hat a chin-strapped ring hat with a toilet paper dispenser mounted on top to allow you to sneeze without incident.

* Stormy sky tie an updated variation of the clip-on tie that doubles as a collapsible umbrella in front.

* Baby mops a sleep-suit quipped with mop-heads so that when the baby is on the floor, he/she can mop the floor at the same time. There are the similarly functional duster slippers for cats. Why not put your toddlers and pets to use on your household chores?

* Portable zebra crossing a rolled-up piece of plastic mimicking a crosswalk pattern so one has the inarguable right-of-way on busy streets.

* Self-portrait camera stick a 57-cm telescoping pole which allows young and apparently shy couples to take pictures of themselves without having to bother passing strangers. The only sacrifice is the constant appearance of the pole in every shot.

The last two actually reflect the Japanese tendency to "save face" by not intruding on others' lives for their own convenience. Consequently I don't think these would translate too well overseas. This is truly a big bento box of fun for those who enjoy the silliness that results from inventive minds focused on the immediacy of their own environments. However, the book also illustrates how close we are in realizing much of this type of seemingly trivial inventions with what we see in Sharper Image and Brookstone catalogs. That may be the primary allure of this pink tome, the fact that we end up laughing at ourselves for ideas we may not have been creative or motivated enough to make real.

This book of chindogu features some of the most humorous and ingenious inventions ever, inventions so impractical yet addressing real world problems, that they are referred to as "unuseless." The inventions remind me of Monty Python animator Terry Gilliam's cartoons gone horribly awry. Editor Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall explains the concept nicely in the foreword: all these inventions are real and have been manufactured, but to qualify as a real chindogu, the device must be completely impracticable in the real world. Readers are even invited to join and submit chindogu of their own to the International Chindogu Academy. (I am thinking of submitting a Marmoset Crauncher.)

The word "chindogu" was appropriated for these inventions as it is Japanese for "odd or distorted tool." That is a perfect description of these items. There are too many for me to list, but all are beautifully explained and illustrated. Some of my favorites include: "Duster Slippers For Cats," in which housecats don dustmops on their paws to assist with household chores (the illustration is priceless); "The Noodle Eater's Hair Guard," which is the silly pink contraption on the cover; "The Back Scratcher's T-Shirt" (which is not only funny, it borders on a good idea); the "Portable Subway Strap" (for those who enjoy holding onto a plunger affixed to the roof of a train); and the "Ear Extender," which gets my vote for best decorative headgear made from colanders.

This is a funny book, and is beautifully rendered in color throughout. The only warning I have is that if you read this in long sittings, eventually you may find yourself saying "Hey, that's a pretty good idea!" (I had this thought when looking at the "Butterstick.") I recommend this book to lovers of the odd and obscure everywhere.

When my daughter invented a biofeedback-based antisnoring device (a stethoscope-like device with ear pieces and a sound-gathering tube taped beneath the nose) for a high school science fair, little did I realize that she had practiced Chindogu, or the art of creating an object that sounds useful and that almost satisfies a need... except for the fact that it fails in some essential way. Author Kenji Kawakami, whose International Chindogu Society promotes this wonderfully wacky art form, has compiled "The Big Bento Box of Unuseless Japanese Inventions" to celebrate the best of Chindogu.

Each of the 200 inventions includes a description and one or more color photographs of someone modeling or demonstrating the product. How can I begin to list the many types of devices found in this off-the-wall collection? There are many items of apparel ranging from a backscratcher's T-shirt with an itch grid ("Could you please scratch my back at F6?") to training high heels with stabilizer wheels. For the workaholics, there are an office tie and tool belt, each with handy compartments to hold business cards, a calculator, telephone, pens, and other office essentials. There are many umbrella devices, such as the full-body umbrella, an umbrella golf club, and shoe umbrellas to avoid nasty rain puddle splashes. For dieters there are a magnifying fork and dishes that hold half the food they seem to through the use of mirrors. For the handyman there are Swiss army gloves and lawn mower sandals. For the water hater there's a bath body suit to keep you dry no matter how long you soak in the tub. For the claustrophobe, there are wide-angle glasses to make that cramped apartment look roomy. For the ultimate in personal hygiene there are a two-sided toothbrush that cuts brushing time in half and a pair of eye drop funnel glasses. I could go on and on... but I'll leave you with this final gem: the solar-powered flashlight. What would be more impractical than that?

These Chindogu do a masterful job at spoofing our insatiable need for gadgets. The deadpan photos of people using these items are hilarious. Not only will you laugh, but you might really crave a more refined version of some of these products. You might even be inspired to create an unuseless invention of your own. This book is a lot of fun!

Harmonious Environment: Beautify, Detoxify and Energize Your Life, Your Home and Your Planet

Harmonious Environment: Beautify, Detoxify and Energize Your Life, Your Home and Your Planet"The energy from flowers is so bright and strong that they can be put anywhere in the home and they will enhance your life." ~ pg. 217

Norma Lehmeier Hartie is a design consultant and Harmonious Adjustment practitioner who enjoys gardening and cooking. She created the practice of Harmonious Adjustments to give her clients the chance to reconnect with nature and to manifest their personal and professional dreams. Through her book she introduces ideas for detoxing and decluttering your home environment.

If you want a happier, healthier lifestyle that is more in harmony with nature, then Norma Lehmeier Hartie's book has a world of information to make this possible. She can help you:

Remove toxic products from your home and garage

Clean and organize your home

Buy environmentally friendly cleaning products

Organize your home for more peace and harmony

Find healthy personal care products

Grow plants that help to control pollution A list of the Fifty Best Houseplants

Find the best choices in flooring

Figure out how to recycle larger items like a refrigerator

Cook more safely and use kitchen scraps for your garden

Formulate a plan to keep your house clean

Organize every room in the house

Decorate with Confidence

Reading through the list of harmful products gives you an idea of the ingredients to avoid in cleaners and how they can affect your health. For an antibacterial spray, the author suggests water and essential oils and for cleaning silver she also suggests more natural solutions like baking soda and vinegar. Using Borax and water is less dangerous than chlorine bleach fumes and you may want to try this in your shower. You may enjoy products by Seventh Generation.

Chapter three felt a little out of my personal range of expertise, although we know that thoughts can affect our environment and life and can move our life in a positive or negative direction. This chapter deals more with spiritual practices. Chapter 6 also delves into a deeper connection with nature, personality types and elemental powers. The list of Yin and Yang is helpful to create a balance of the two in your home. An entire chapter is also dedicated to plants, gemstones and crystals.

"If you are the average American woman, you expose yourself to over two hundred synthetic chemicals that are found in the products you use as you prepare yourself for the day. These products do not simply sit on your skin; approximately sixty percent of these ingredients get absorbed into your bloodstream." ~ pg. 91

Chapter four is especially informative and essential if you are trying to be healthier and want to find organic alternatives to products filled with synthetic chemicals. Why should you avoid petroleum and talc? Why is there lead in hair dye?

The section on an Eco-Friendly Kitchen is interesting and the chapter on natural and organic foods also gives ideas on how to save time in the kitchen. A few recipes are included:

Vegetarian Pasta Primavera

Fajitas

Risotto with Scallops or Shrimp

Lemon Rice

Grilled Vegetables

An extensive list of resources and a very handy index complete this well-researched and extremely helpful book. If you enjoy Feng Shui or decorating and organizing your home, there is a lot to enjoy and you may find the information in this book can also help with fatigue, anxiety and sleeping problems.

Worried about what your family is being exposed to? Are you hoping to increase your wealth or find love this year? Trying to decide on the best color to paint your walls? If you answered "yes!" to any of these questions, then Harmonious Environment is a must read.

The goal of this book is to create positive energy both in your home and your life and to be kinder to the earth. Hertie is a design consultant, chef, gardener, and healer. She shares her professional and personal experiences with the readers, i.e., homemade earth-friendly cleaning products, tasty recipes for carnivores and vegetarians, etc. She recommends that after reading this book, you apply the process in the following order:

1. Remove toxic products from your home and garage

2. Clean, declutter, clear and organize your home

3. Buy/use environmentally friendly products

4. Learn how to use place objects (furniture, mirrors, etc.) to manifest change in your life

The relationship between people and the Earth is an important part of Harmonious Environments. To remind ourselves of this interconnection, Hertie recommends bringing the natural world into your home. Some ways to do this include displaying rocks and minerals and using houseplants as pollution busters.

Hertie uses Harmonious Adjustments (TM) that combines "the best principles of Feng Shui, the application of the Four Elements based on your birth date, color, Vastu, energy work and good design." I've read a few Feng Shui books in the past, but the author's clear instructions and enthusiasm has given me the confidence to actually try this at home.

I liked how the author reminded me to use this book as a guideline but to also trust my intuition. Do what looks and feels right for you. I also liked how the Resource section listed all the suppliers, organizations and further readings mentioned throughout the book.

Even if you aren't interested in Feng Shui, this book has valuable information about becoming an informed consumer and living a more eco-friendly life.

I was so inspired by "Harmonious Environment" that even as I was working on the book, I found myself stopping in mid-chapter to go and make some 'harmonious adjustments' to my desk, and then my office. It didn't stop there -soon I was dowsing my living room on the weekends. I also tried out some of the recipes. They were delicious.

I got this wonderful book as we are moving our place of business, and wanted to make smart choices. From the first page, Ms. Lehmeier-Hartie shares her expertise in an organized, thoughtful way. The day after I got the book, I negotiated a much more logical and healthier ventilation system, and the section on colors was far and away the most organized and logical explanation I have ever seen.

Some aspects of our project are beyond our control, but I became a much more active participant. We anxiously await our new space, and know that the suggestions made here will add to the beauty and functionality of our space. I wish I could have rated this 10 stars!

Homemade Health (Herbology at Home)

Homemade HealthThis is book three in Anke Bialas' Herbology at Home Series. What really speaks to me, in this book, is the fact that it helps show us that herbal home medicine making is a craft that has been practiced for eons and it is accessible and practical for all of us. Through the ages people have been using common culinary herbs not only for flavoring food, but also for the medicinal qualities of these plants. Anyone can tend themselves or their loved ones with some of the everyday complaints we humans are prone to, with the help of these herbs. Homemade Health will help you learn how to create remedies for forty three different health ailments using herbs you probably already have in your larder or growing in your kitchen garden. I will share this, I have been making my own remedies for quite awhile now, and I still found lots of new information in this book! Anke has drawn upon the herbal knowledge her paternal grandmother passed down to her and I thank her so much for sharing with us, through this book!

There is a section with the healing properties of some common culinary herbs, over 160 remedy recipes, tips for when to harvest and how to preserve the herbs, easy to follow directions for preparing base remedies, such as creams, ointments, syrups, tinctures and more.

Anke's goal of her Herbology at Home Series, is to help us realize that each and every one of us have the ability to help support and tend some of our own health issues, (or prevent them), right at our own fingertips. We don't have to be doctors, herbalists, great gardeners, or chemists! With the help of her tips, ideas, suggestions we can start using common culinary herbs right in our own kitchens to make our own homemade health:) These are home remedies your grandmother knew. Simple and effective treatments right from your own pantry.

This book is amazing, I love the fact that it is full of products that we use every day and is a great way to go back to basics and start to get rid of some of the nasties we use in our homes. Best thing is you can grow so much of this yourself. A must have for every house!!!

The Women's Health Big Book of Yoga: The Essential Guide to Complete Mind/Body Fitness

The Women's Health Big Book of Yoga: The Essential Guide to Complete Mind/Body FitnessI just got this book today, so I haven't had a chance to go through every single page, but I am so impressed! It includes:

* a brief overview of the history of yoga

* language of yoga

* benefits of yoga

* answers to common questions on yoga

* touches on some of the deeper spiritual aspects of yoga (enough to give a taste of it, but not to overwhelm)

* how yoga keeps you fit

* conscious eating and even includes a sample meal plan with a few recipes!

That's just the first 40 pages :) THEN the book goes onto:

* a thorough break down of every essential yoga pose with beautiful photographic spreads that have anatomical cues

* fun 15 minute sequences you can do at home to target different parts of the body (ie.legs, arms, butt, etc...), special health-focused sequences (ie. pms, hangover, carpal tunnel, back pain, etc...), performance sequences (ie. basketball, golf, climbing, etc.), emotional health (ie. anxiety, relaxation, broken heart, etc...) and much MORE!

I am a yoga teacher and I would recommend this to any student seeking to perfect their asanas and gain a general understanding of yogic philosophy. However, if you're looking to get deep into the philosophy of yoga, this would not be the book I recommend. There are many other yoga books on anatomy and philosophy. However, I found this book to be very user friendly and well thought out guide to deepening your yogic practice! I believe that every yogi and/or yogini would benefit from having this book in their library.

I teach yoga and a student brought a copy to class to ask my opinion. I spent some time with it and discovered that Kathryn Budig has created a book very much like herself--it's practical, informative, and downright entertaining. She appreciates the fact that many woman have incorporated yoga into their lives for all kinds of practical reasons, but mainly because it makes them feel good. She provides all of the basic information a beginner or an experienced yogini might need about the many questions that can arise during your practice, and has also shown how to use some of the various poses as a remedy for many of the common challanges we face in our daily lives. If you're interested, she has covered pretty much the full gamut of yoga topics (breathing techniques, dealing with injuries, meditation, "I'm not flexible", etc.) and you can pick and choose to read about those that pique your curiosity. The photography is stunning, and the photos are of real people who have developed some proficiency so that you can have an idea of where you may be headed. There is really good information here and it's not presented in some obtuse, philosophical and hard to comprehend manner, nor does she demand that you adhere to the "my way or the highway" mode of teaching--like I said before, it's very practical, informative and good advice on how to incorporate yoga into your daily life and reap its many benefits. I'm recommending it to all of my women students, and to those men who aren't put off by the "women's health" part of the title. Good stuff, entertaining, and highly recommended.

This is a glossy, bubbly approach to yoga. Sort of "fit woman's how to add some yoga to your sports routine". You will get some pop-philosophy (where yoga luminaries are given funny nicknames and the author explains how yoga helped her accept that she is too heavy to become an LA actress, her original ambition), some fit girl's real life problem advice (a sequence for when your boyfriend dumps you) and a whole lot of pastel hi-res asana demonstrations.

Now the demonstrations are what makes the book worthwhile: they are excellent and detailed, presented from different angles and contain various practical tips on how to work toward achieving what seems to be impossible at first.

If you can live with the former, buy it for the latter. But if the former bugs you especially if you have some yoga experience already there are better books out there.

Summary:

This book is dangerous. I'm honestly concerned that someone will hurt themselves with this book.

This book would get torn apart in a peer review, like what I'm doing. The author is a contributing magazine editor. That alone raises some flags on its purpose and credibility.

This book should not have been written. It adds nothing to the subject of yoga and is intended purely to reap profit from buyers. Practitioners are better off not using it.

Far better options exist for yoga books. My favorite being David Swenson's http://www.amazon.com/Ashtanga-Yoga-The-Practice-Manual/dp/1891252089/ref=tmm_other_meta_binding_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1362513861&sr=8-3

Issues with this Book:

• Way too pro-yoga. Yoga is not a panacea for every mental and physical woe, though this book suggests it is. You won't suddenly fix your health problems, chronic anxiety, or get ripped muscles. It can certainly help with those, but the book over-promises. In one part it suggests that. "400 calories can be burned in a 90 minute Vinyasa class!" For reference, I checked other activities that burn about 400 calories in 90min. That list includes things like golf, yard work, and bathing a dog. Some activities that burn slightly more calories: cleaning gutters, wheelchair basketball, hiking, downhill skiing. The point I'm making is that yoga is not high calorie burn activity.

• Cherry-picked scientific studies: She cherry picks studies to prove her point too often (common of Men's and Women's Health), without mentioning counter arguments.

• Writing style. Written like a massive magazine endorsement. Too many exclamation points.

• References: It quotes the dictionary and cites "The Secret" by Rhonda Byrnes.

• It advocates cleansing: Not only is this book the wrong context for cleansing diets, there's no scientific basis for this helping.

• Few modifications are provided to make the poses appropriate for different ability levels. There is the books greatest flaw. For example, being able to do a free handstand is the end result of possibly years of training and many progressions to get there. This book just presents it, with the only variation being a handstand against a wall. Most of the other variations presented are only for the most advanced style of a pose.

• No Feeling: Doesn't say where you should feel the stretch/strengthen of a pose. Triangle pose, for example, is quite technical in feeling the pose correctly.

• No warnings: A lot of the poses presented are dangerous without an instructor's guidance. There are no warnings present for many of them.

• Terrible Series Constructions and Lack of Transitions: The very first series it presents, a quick 15 min one, includes both a standing split and handstand. Those are very advanced poses to do and shouldn't be done without a warm-up. Again, there are no modifications given to progress to the pose. Throughout the other series, there is little consideration of difficulty level between poses. A lot of the specialty series for headache, jet lag, hangovers are just the author's imagination of what might help. For indigestion, it suggests a bunch of twisting poses; for acne, a bunch of inverted poses. It all seems like a pseudoscience of false promises.

• Confused Target Audience: Who is this book for? It discusses basic concepts of yoga, yet includes some very advanced and dangerous poses that could only be attempted after several years of training.

• Great production value and look: This might make it worse, because people will be drawn to the colorful and pretty pictures and think it's an authoritative source for teaching oneself yoga.

I am an intermediate yoga practitioner I often do it in my home and rarely join a formal class setting. As a result, I was looking forward to this book because I thought that it might allow me to get some great routines and new ideas for my practice.

I loved the images the colors are bright, and the poses are clear. The book is broken down in sections with the first going through various poses, and the second one arranged according to what you are looking to get out of your practice (i.e. relaxation, back pain, PMS, etc.). I appreciate the various routines, but found that it lacked transitions there isn't a clear guide how to go from pose to pose and that is a big part of what makes yoga so effective. I liked the variety of poses, but found that adding additional details about the transitions and in-between steps would have helped.

I also found it strange that Women's Health had a man doing some of the yoga routines it didn't seem like the right setting. I understand that men do yoga, but since this is a Women's Health book, it was a bit odd and unnecessary.

Holding Your Ground: Preparing for Defense if it All Falls Apart

Holding Your Ground: Preparing for Defense if it All Falls ApartMy husband and I are preparing..... preparing for a natural disaster, or other "event." We literally read this book from cover-to-cover and took notes the whole way through. Who knew there are inexpensive, practical, uncomplicated ways to protect your home/emergency supplies from looters? My husband and I both have read several book about emergency supplies, food storage, etc. But, this book is vital in that it details how to protect those very supplies! Each of us came away so many no-nonsense ways to protect our home. As I drive into our driveway, I have a new outlook on our property.....would a looter be able to hear our generator from here? Would our mowed lawn indicate presence of a well fed, warm family behind our front door? This book details how to disguise/protect and generally defend the preparations you have made. There are details for urban and rural etc. so everyone benefits from the concepts and practical advice. Certainly the discussions of weapons/ammo etc. are worth a positive review according to my husband. I have to admit...I left that for him to absorb, and as a wife, I focused on the matter-of-fact ways to discourage looters and home invasions. This book has changed my way of thinking about what to do after my emergency checklist has been completed. You will write in the margins of this book!

"Holding Your Ground" is a well written, generally clear, straight-forward, and useful survey of a primarily defensive/passive strategies and techniques that could well save your life, if things should all fall apart; a formerly unthinkable scenario that is, in my opinion, becoming less "unthinkable" by the day. Moreover, many of the steps "Joe Nobody" recommends could be relatively easily accomplished and are not very expensive.

Written from an obvious military prospective, this book covers many fundamental considerations, starting with not only a systematic survey of the strengths and weaknesses of the place to be defended, but also with an honest appraisal of the attitudes potential defenders would bring to this dire situation i.e. at its most basic level, could you pick up a gun and shoot someone who was intent on robbing or killing you and yours. It then proceeds to very systematically outline various defensive strategies, techniques, and in the smaller offensive section, to list a few of the types of weapons and the basic equipment that would help you to "hold your ground."

I particularly liked his ideas for "hiding in plain sight," camouflaging your location and/or making it appear to be burnt out, abandoned, and/or already looted, and several creative ideas for using camouflage netting inside a structure, including hanging it across windows and tightly covering doors with it to make any attempted entry by attackers much more difficult, thus giving defenders much more time to react.

There are many very clear drawings/illustrations that help to show what he is trying to teach but, unfortunately, on the other hand, the pictures used in this work are almost uniformly out of focus and muddy--making it very hard to even see what he is attempting to illustrate.

A minor criticism is that several times in this book the author refers to the "red arrows" that are supposed to be in illustrations, when the whole book is printed in black and white only i.e. no red or any other color arrows.

I highly recommend this book to get you thinking very defensively and thinking in ways and about things that you probably do not currently think about. Our days of living off the surpluses created by past generations, of peace and plenty, and a hazy disconnect from reality, look like they are coming to an end folks, and perhaps a very abrupt one. So, time to "listen up" and prepare, to be the ant and not the grasshopper.

Finally, the author often writes that there are many military manuals or other publications that give more detailed information on this or that subject which he is just outlining. One thing that I believe would have greatly increased the usefulness of this book would have been a select bibliography of several of the key military manuals and other publications that he was referring to.

This book made me reevaluate how I look at my home and I WISH I had read it BEFORE my home was renovated.

A planned bedroom move at the front of the house to the back of the house is still on but after reading this book, the new windows at the front of the house will no longer be large white casement windows. Instead, they will be two rows of NARROW HIGH DARK windows running across the front which OPEN IN (so people outside cannot tell the windows are open from the outside) to let in ventilation/breeze but are also too small and high for someone to climb in. On the house plans, they look quite modern and leave a lot of wall space in the new living room area which is great. I plan to build a bookcase against that wall seen in a magazine that is also a ladder but doesn't look like one so if someone wants to look outside, go for it. I found venting round windows (any size I want or color or heat/cold value, whatever) on a Chinese website and I was thinking of buying a few very small round peep hole windows which open by turning(They don't open inside or outside) but actually spin open so half the window is venting when open so people can look out.

I had french doors put in before I read this book and they are being removed now. Too easy to break into and in storms, to easy to blow in.

The checklist is great also. Worth the cost of the book by itself.

The author here has a very good command of the subject matter and he approaches the "issues" which an individual might face in a very realistic fashion. Thought provoking. I am a former member of a very busy major city SWAT team and so much of what I read in this subject area is much too strongly influenced by common perceptions and television drama which are inaccurate and unfortunately can get some well intentioned (and even well prepared) person killed--typically at the hands of someone not so well intentioned. You may need to be prepared to make quick decisions in situations most of you have never faced, this book provides real world guidance for what to do before you have to make those decisions and how to realistically analyze those situations when they arise. If bad things happen in society and you have to resort to a firearm to defend yourself and your family against an armed attacker somebody is most likely going to end up slowly and painfully dying--accept this and you increase the chances that you or your family member won't be the one on the ground gasping and feeling their life slip away. Hope for the best, be prepared for the worst!

All Natural Dental Remedies: Herbs and Home Remedies to Heal Your Teeth & Naturally Restore Tooth En

All Natural Dental Remedies: Herbs and Home Remedies to Heal Your Teeth & Naturally Restore Tooth EnamelThe author did her research and presents a practical guide. Her disclosure is follows which describes what is important about this book.

The purpose of the book as clearly stated, "the purpose of "All Natural Dental Remedies" is not to make an argument for alternative dentistry or against conventional dentistry; nor is it to persuade anyone that one way of doing things is superior to another. Rather, it is to present practical information about the health and healing of the teeth and gums in a matter-of-fact way for informational purposes.

And as she continues to say, "There is nothing mysterious or mystical about re-mineralizing teeth and naturally restoring tooth enamel. Yet, despite the renaissance of information about other aspects of natural healing, natural dental care is a subject that has not been much discussed. This is partly because to talk about natural dental enamel growth or healing of cavities is heresy against the official dental establishment. And, it is partly because when people believe there is no solution to a problem, they don't bother to look for one."

I have heard about re-mineralizing teeth naturally and the book provides a good guide for the process. The book provides practical formulas or remedies, "the types of remedies presented include nutritional, herbal, mineral and other alternative remedies. Unfortunately, there is very little mainstream scientific research on alternative dental remedies, so we must rely largely on folk lore and what is called "anecdotal" evidence."

I am grateful for her work and hope more people take responsibility for their own health and tooth care.

I'm a busy person so I appreciated that this book was short and straight to the point. There wasn't 200 pages of filler to wade through, like in most books. Both of my kids have a cavity so I wanted information about what I could do to help strengthen and improve the health of their teeth so they don't face this problem again in the future.

The Smarter Science of Slim Workbook

The Smarter Science of Slim Workbook*****

The main book--The Smarter Science of Slim--is an amazing book by Jonathan Bailor about a healthy theory and practice of eating, exercising, and weight loss. THIS book--The Workbook--is one of two additional books that currently accompanies the main book--it is a summary of the main book's research and information and includes a 5-week tracking journal. It is a great way to keep organized and to follow your progress.

I would highly recommend buying the main book, and then if you want to have a handy summary as well as a tracking system to follow your progress, buy this one--the workbook--too.

There is a third book, called The Smarter Science of Slim Journal. That book a tracking diary to note day by day progress and impressions, like what is in this workbook, but longer, for 12 weeks. The journal doesn't include any summaries of the book; it's a journal only.

I have all three books: the main book, the journal, and the workbook, as I am adopting the Smarter Science of Slim as my way of eating and regaining my health. I highly recommend all three. I wrote this review so that everyone could know the difference between the books, as it can be hard to tell just from the descriptions.

Highly recommended.

*****

I read the original Smarter Science of Slim book and found it full of great information. While this one covers a lot of the same ground in summary, I also found the practical ways to apply the ideas week-by-week to be very helpful. However, I'm docking a star because the Kindle isn't the best delivery mechanism the workbook contains forms to be filled out, bubbles to be shaded in, etc., and you obviously can't do that on the Kindle version. I checked and the forms aren't available for download, so my only recourse is to purchase another (paper) title. Much as I like reading on my Kindle, I don't think this title suits itself for the format and should have probably been offered as paper only (or at least the limitations of the Kindle version spelled out).

I have read the book "The Smarter Science of Slim" and reviewed it on November 3, 2011. I thought it was a great book and decided to take a look at the workbook, too.

The Workbook continues with a lot of good information. I especially liked Part 1 Recapping Research

I really like this chapter because when I read the book, I kept turning down pages so I could refer back to charts or specific data on these pages at a later time. This part of the workbook has essentially taken much of my turned down pages in the main book and put them in a place that I can easily refer back to. With turned down pages and no easy way to bookmark what is on a turned down page, it takes a while to go back and find specific tables or text in the book. The workbook summary pages make this a breeze. So, I would buy the workbook just for this summary if nothing else.

I also like the exercise diagrams. This is the kind of info a trainer would give you if you belonged to a gym. I have a home gym and already own a lot of the equipment that is used for the illustrations. So, that data is like having a trainer come to my home and give me the proper instructions for using the stuff. Some people who go to gyms don't want to pay for a trainer, and so they fool around on the equipment and probably not use it properly. This is like a jump start to working out properly.

Part 2 Smarter Psychology

The sentence completion exercises are interesting. I can see where they would help you to program your subconscious mind for success.

Part 3 Reset Setpoint

The serving size info in Chapter 13 is great. A lot of people have no clue what a serving size of many foods are so this is the kind of data you would like to have close to the fridge. It would be nice if the workbook had a tear-out card that you could stick on the fridge door with a magnet. I don't know if people stick stuff on their refrigerator doors any more, but ours is covered with stuff notes, pictures of the grandchildren, grocery lists, etc. A card on the door with reminders of serving sizes would remind me about mindless munching.

The chapters after this get into journaling. I have never been a journaling person. I know a lot of people do it and it is a good way to chart progress towards a goal. But I guess I am not the kind of person who wants to spend so much time keeping a journal. So, this area is not a real big thing with me. However, the way the workbook is laid out is excellent for anyone who wants to do it. Anyone who has never kept a journal has everything they need to get started with keeping a journal and be successful. The workbook makes it pretty painless and a person couldn't help but do it properly to get the results they are after.

I like the charts in Chapter 19. I definitely want to become a HOT FITNESS MODEL Ha..ha.. But I guess I would settle for just FIT. The HOT and MODEL tags would never get stuck on me. I could see these charts on cardboard stock and stuck on the fridge, too. Just as a reminder that I want to stay on the RIGHT Side of the chart and not on the LEFT side.

The workbook goes well with the book and provides good summaries of the data and charts that are detailed in the book itself. You really need to read the book first and then all the data in the workbook makes a lot more sense because you can understand where the information came from and the logic behind the summaries.

I'm an aficionado of books that offer scientific support for eating in a way that supports health, and this is the holy grail. It's written very clearly and somehow makes the concept of eating this way very easy to understand, and lacks any of the preachy quality that some authors employ.

I've been tweaking my diet for a little over a year and putting the principles outlined in this book into practice have helped me bust through the plateau I'd been on for a couple of months.

Eating this way makes me feel full, satisfied, and it quelled the savage beast that looks for more and more at the end of the day. I've lost some 14 pounds and 2 inches around my waist since reading this book and using his suggestions. This feels like something I can follow forever. I highly recommend this book.
