Absolute Beauty: Radiant Skin and Inner Harmony Through the Ancient Secrets of Ayurveda

Absolute Beauty: Radiant Skin and Inner Harmony Through the Ancient Secrets of AyurvedaThis book is more than advice on skin care. It is a comprehensive guide to Ayurvedic living The author covers everything from nutrition to exercise and body care, explains why the body gets out of balance, how each of the three doshas reacts differently, and how we can regain health. She includes special elimination therapies, fasts, and breathing techniques, and helps you discover your skin type through a variety of quizzes.

The major part, of course, deals with body care and has simple recipes for homemade shampoos, conditioners, cleansers, baths and much more. In fact, so much more that I recommend you give up your job and hire two servants if you intend to follow her daily beauty regimen. Raichur recommends morning exercise (45 minutes), body self-massage (20 minutes), scalp massage (5 minutes), facial care (up to 15 minutes), saunas (or home alternatives, which she describes), nasal rinses, meditation, yoga, and, well, you name it. Although not all procedures need to be done every day, just following her basic daily routine takes more time than most mothers have.

Like other Ayurvedic specialists, she does not explain how people with two dosha imbalances should handle the diet recommendations. She does, however, bring good lists with dietary suggestions for each skin type, and these lists include herbs, food, and cosmetics. (According to the author's principle: "If you can't eat it, don't rub it on.")

Raichur also has her own cosmetics line which is available on the Web. When I discovered that some cosmetics listed the ingredients while others did not, I took out her book again. I was not surprised to see that she includes ingredients in her own cosmetic products that she brands as possible carcinogens or allergens in her book. Again, theory differs from reality.

But in general, her book is a thorough introduction to Ayurveda with lots of advice for healthy living and natural home-made cosmetics.

I really like Ms. Raichur's detailed and thorough approach to Ayurvedic philosophy. I've been very pleased with the results of the homemade products. I have been using the sensitive skin recipes, and have been getting a lot of compliments on my glowing skin. Plus, I used the concoctions while I was pregnant with very good results. I highly recommend this book. I also like being liberated from buying expensive skin care products and their wasteful packaging.

I should also note that while she does mention her own line, everything in the book can be made very easily at home. I probably will try purchasing the liposomes that the Bindi line offers, though...I was puzzled that one reviewer noted that she couldn't find amber colored eyedropper bottles, and the basic ingredients for the potions--many are straight from the food store (like orange peel, bananas, milk powder, almond powder--or you just buy almonds and grind them up in a coffee grinder) or the health food store (essential oils, bottles). Some of the ingredients are from Indian grocery stores (like chickpea or lentil flours). You can always order stuff off the web if you don't live near a good health food or Indian grocery store.

I should note that I did not care for the body cleanser (milk powder & chick pea flour) because it clogged up my tub drain...otherwise everything else has worked beautifully.

This weekend at the urging of my sister, who has been using this book for several months and has FABULOUS skin (even though she's stopped using commercial products and going for facials) I followed Pratima's advice for 2 nights. First I should say i use expensive cleansers and have expensive facials. And I could not believe how my skin looked when i went to bed, just from following her advice. It looked like it did in my early 20's on the 2nd night no joke (I'm 36)! The lines on my forehead had become barely noticeable, even to me, and my makeup went on very smoothly. Just want to say for the reviewers who complain that her commercial products have additives and chemicals many of those chemicals might have been extracted from the foods you're using at home. Second, if she didn't add preservatives, they wouldn't last more than a few days and would have to be kept in the refrigerator, not on the shelf. It's unfortunate that if you want convenience you have to put up with the additives. If you have the time, and this book, you don't have to.

I highly recommend this book! It's like an encyclopedia for the skin, health and lifestyle. Pratima goes where no one else has before and provides us with valuable ancient knowledge. She is more knowledgeable on the skin than any dermatologist I've been to. This book is much more than just a "how to make your own product" book. It's learning about your constitution, what to eat according to your 'dosha', what products and herbs are more beneficial for you, nutritional therapy, what exercise and lifestyle you should lead, foods for your skin type, how to remove stress, how to do your own facial and body exercise, how to reduce toxins in your body, daily & seasonal routines, what makeup is appropriate, aromatherapy, making your own scents & mood oils, breathing therapy & more. I had severe acne & eczema and after trying dr.'s for many years with no success, I had the fortunate experience of seeing Pratima at her spa clinic in NY and within a month my entire skin began to clear and my overall health & energy improved as well. Pratima herself is an example of what she teaches, she looks amazing & radiant! and all her products are completely natural (not sure what one of the reviewers in this website was talking about when she says that Pratima is a hypocrite & her products were full of chemicals she must've been confusing them with another line, because it is so not true). I hope more people benefit from this book & Dr. Pratima.

I've only ever written one review before, but felt compelled to do so after reading this book. I'm not kidding when I say it's transformed my skin. I've struggled with adult acne for years, and my skin is the clearest ever and best of all, I'm not spending $$$ on skin care. I love the fact that everything I'm using on my face I could eat! I'll be honest too, I'm not following everything recommended to the T. I've already bought this book for a couple of friends, and I've got to say, whether you have problem skin or just want a more natural approach, this book is definitely worth checking out. It's truly beautiful and inspiring, and I know I'll keep going back to it. PS there is one review by someone saying she has sensitive skin, she already knew that and so immediately started the program. I would urge her, and anyone planning to try the advice in this book, to actually read the book and go through the diagnosis process, rather than skipping to the suggested programs. I discovered my skin type is pita dominant, and was surprised as normally my body type is considered vattic. Take your time with the book, don't expect quick fixes, but read it and enjoy the journey it can take you on! It's not presciptive (ie, you have oily skin, do this... and if you read it that way, you are missing the point), it's an opportunity to tune into yourself in a far deeper way, and access the wisdom that is in your skin and in your body. I thank the author for sharing the wisdom she has gained.

Natural Soapmaking

Natural SoapmakingFor the person who wishes to start making his or her own soap, this method of soapmkaing will be easiest (no lye involved!). Marie Browning's method is to purchase a "basic" bar of soap, melt it down, then add in your own ingredients to personalize the soap. I love the idea of personalizing soaps; however, I found that locating a natural, "basic" soap was impossible. Virtually every brand has fragrance and additives that will effect the result of your soap (i.e., if you use a bar of Ivory soap, a thousand drops of aromatic essential oils won't disguise the Ivory soap scent). Browning does not make any brand suggestions of "basic" soaps, but I suggest to try an organic food store. Browning's molding method is questionnable as well: the soap does not release from its mold by simply dousing the mold with Vaseline. I enjoyed the additional information, such as how to make bath salts, facial cleansers and how to package your products. Those tips are creative and fun. If you are frightened of dealing with lye and want a simple, quick method of soapmaking, this book will be enjoyable for you. Tip: purchase an encyclopedia of cosmetic ingredients. It will aid you in selecting quality ingredients to use in your soaps, because this information is not provided in Browning's book. Lastly, don't expect your soaps to look as beautiful as Browning's until you've truly got the hang of it. Once you've mastered this method you can advance to making your own soaps from scratch!

I'm rather disturbed by a few negative and sometimes vitriolic reviews of this book. To be sure, this book does not teach soapmaking from scratch. However, several reviewers displayed their snobbery about "true" soapmaking in such a way that might cause others to avoid buying this book.

For those of us who work 8+ hours each weekday, then dash around taking care of family, errands, appointments, chores, and all other activities associated with a hectic life, this book is a dream.

It is well written, does NOT promote any particular brand of soap (contrary to some review comments), provides excellent step-by-step instructions, and presents many ideas and encouraging suggestions beyond making just bars of soap.

I ordered four other books at the same time I purchased this one. I've read them all, cover to cover. They each have their strengths and weaknesses. Three discuss making soap from scratch -and one of those also discusses hand-milling the resultant batches -while the other two (this one included) discuss hand-milling. Some contain technical information in depth, some talk about other more aesthetic aspects of soapmaking. Taken as a whole, the several books give a more complete picture of what can be done in the world of soap than any one book can possibly accomplish.

Just as it is no less my handwork when I use a pattern for cross-stitch that someone else designed, so too hand-milling pre-made batches of soap enables me to fit this enticing activity into my life.

I will someday find the time to create soap from scratch. Until then, I certainly will not deny myself the pleasure of making lovely soaps I've created in my own home using the ideas in this book.

I found this book to be exactly what I wanted. I'm a working wife who dabbles in many crafts and hobbies. I wanted to try my hand at crafting a few bars of soap without all the fuss needed for lye soaps. I grated castille soap to make mine and I was very pleased with the results. I made the Pet Soap and it works well on my Westie. I disagree with other reviews below. I purposely bought this book because it tells you up front that it is not a "from scratch" recipe book. I was not mislead into thinking I was making true (from lye) soap. The pictures were well done and the instructions are clear. I found most ingredients available in a local store dealing in all natural products. I still purchase handmade soaps from true soapmakers...but it's also fun to make these soaps for my family and friends.

I like this book, but instead of being a soapmaking book, it should be called a soapcrafting book. To use this book, one needs to already have a base soap to re-mill(rebatch) into the crafted soaps included in this book. The recipes are easy to follow, and once you have perfected the process of re-milling, the end products will make a nice expansion to any soap line of products.

Even though this book is entitled "Natural Soapmaking" it really refers using items such as herbs, etc in your soaps and not to the cold process you would doing when making soaps with lye (which can take a month to cure). These are easy receipes for someone just starting out and want to learn creative ways make soaps which gives you immediate results. It gives good instructions and information about aromatherapy, what different colors mean and what certain herbs to enhance your soaps. Although, she recommends putting Vaseline in the molds to assist with the releasing of the mold you really do not need to do that! As long as you wait for the soap to harden completely that step is unnecessary! And for the cold process/lye makers you may want to pass on this one because you may be disappointed! It is a great addition to your Melt and Pour Soapmaking by the same author!

Weight Loss Surgery For Dummies

Weight Loss Surgery For DummiesI guess probably the best way I can be helpful in this review is to help you decide if this book is for you. First of all, the authors have written the book specifically for people for whom the following is true:

-You or someone you love has severe obesity.

-You want to learn more about weight loss surgery.

-You've already tried and failed at many different weight loss methods.

-You've already had the surgery and you want to keep your weight down.

-Being obese has become your identity.

-You're ready to step up and change your life.

-You're ready to lose weight permanently.

The organization of the book is sensible and orderly. The five sections include:

Is Weight Loss Surgery For You?

Preparing for Surgery

The Hospital and Beyond

Ensuring Success

Myths and Misconceptions

Typical for the Dummies series, the language is clear and simple. It never gets very technical, so information-hounds may need to dig deeper than this book goes. Clearly, these are the basics, and very well laid out. For an ideal introduction to the subject, I can't see how you could beat this book.

Spent weeks looking at info on the web, but this book really did have a lot more insight that I found. If you are considering WLS or if you have just had it, this is a great book to let you know what to expect...both the good and the bad.

Buy Weight Loss Surgery For Dummies Now

I am going through the process for weight loss surgery right now and want to learn as much as I can before I go through it. It will take much commitment from me to make this successful. I found out that I am the only one that will make this work for me or not. I have also found out that a quarter of the people that go through this surgery regain all and sometimes more of the weight because they are not committed to following the program.

You will need a very strong support group if you are like me and start something and sometimes don't finish it. I than God for my family and friends who want to see this work but I will still join the support group at the hospital as well.

This is a wonderful book, it gives you all of the options and pitfalls of bariatric surgery. It taught me what to expect and what to do.

This is NOT a diet, it is a change in life and thinking. I know all diets say that but this will change your life or scar you for life. Start everything before the surgery.

Becoming a Personal Trainer For Dummies

Becoming a Personal Trainer For DummiesI have been a personal trainer for nearly two years and I thought I had a handle on everything. I was given this book as a gift and I was blown away with the comprehensive information that it provides. I learned the most from the True Stories sections as they provided extra tips and really expanded upon the knowledge contained in this book. I would highly recommend this book to anyone thinking about becoming a personal trainer and encourage current personal trainers to read it as well. I only wish I would have read this book a lot sooner.

This is a very fun and informative book to read if you're considering a career as a personal trainer. I've been in the industry for quite a while and still found it a worthwhile read. The actual experiences of different personal trainers portrayed in this book was probably my favorite part, but there was really not one chapter in this book that I didn't feel I benefited from reading. If you are new to the personal training industry or are considering fitness as a career, this is a great book to start with.

One aspect of training this book does not cover, which is fine because that's not what this book is for; is the selling side of personal training. That's right, your new personal training position has very much to do with sales. I still remember having to sell my first client personal training sessions, I had no idea what I was doing nor that I was doing sales when I signed up to be a trainer. It's not that bad once you get the hang of it, just remember that helping people is the name of the game. I would suggest looking into some type of book that teaches you how to sell, makes things much less stressful. Here are two good books on the subject:

1) The Personal Training Sales Education Textbook: A simple and effective sales system designed specifically for the personal trainer in the health club.

2) Selling Personal Training : How To Make the Most of Your Personal Training Business

I also learned a few things that can be incorprated into my own liftness lifestyle.

The title of this book is remarkably misleading. The vast majority of the content is about starting your own personal training *business* not becoming a personal trainer. The sections on certification are fine but skimpy. The section on exercise prescription is, well, comical stick figure diagrams? Really?

If you read the reviews, even the most positive ones say things like, "not what I thought it would be," or "geared toward people who are already certified." If you're already a trainer, the detailed instructions on how to write a business plan and market yourself could be quite useful. Otherwise, those wanting to break into the field can go online and find everything you need from this book in about fifteen minutes. Good luck!

The Medical Advisor: The Complete Guide to Alternative & Conventional Treatments : Home Edition

The Medical Advisor: The Complete Guide to Alternative & Conventional Treatments : Home EditionI have several other medical books, but as far as diagnosing symptoms, this is the best. You can find an entire chart for arm pain or something like that, then you can check out possible diseases. With other books, you need to know what you have first. I also like how the book is set up. You read about the symptoms and which ones require medical attention, then you read about possible causes, and cure options -both traditional and alternative. I also use this book to check my medications, since there is an extensive list in the back. And I love the pictures of the body in the back -which aided me in realizing I probably had a swollen gland and not a cancerous lump. I wish they would do an updated version of this book. Colleagues at work are forever asking me to "bring in your book," to diagnosed their families. It's must-have home reference. (I need to add that I have the hardback version, and I am assuming the paperback is the same.)

I bought this book for my sister-in-law for Christmas 3 years ago and have been wanting one for myself ever since. This book is the most informational medical book for non-medical persons I have ever used.

Age Defying Fitness: Making the Most of Your Body for the Rest of Your Life

Age Defying Fitness: Making the Most of Your Body for the Rest of Your LifeJust a great little book written by two physical therapists. The idea the book is based upon is that the antidote to aging is activity. So what kind of activity do you need?

To answer this question, the book begins by having you evaluate your physical performance so you can identify those areas that you need the most work in. Thus, you complete five tests that assess your posture, strength, balance, flexibility, and enduranceor what the book calls "the five domains."

After finishing these tests, you should have a pretty good idea of what areas you need the most work on. From there, you just go to the posture chapter or the balance chapter, or the strength chapter and so onwhatever chapters you need the most.

Each chapter contains additional "tests" for the reader to do to further hone in on problem areas. These are kinda neat and very easy for just about anybody to do. After these specific tests, easy-to-do exercises are provided. For instance, the posture chapter contains a lot of stretching exercises. the strengthening exercises use a theraband which comes with the book, the balance exercises (there are eight) are simple i.e. stand on one leg, flexibility exercises which cover your neck area down to your legs, and endurance exercises such as walking, jumping rope or cycling.

The book ends with a brief chapter called "Putting It All Together" which ties up loose ends such as coping with soreness and staying consitent with exercise.

All-in-all its a neat book with a wealth of evidence-based information and simple exercises you can do with little or no equipment. Other books I liked in the body repair genre include Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff if you have a shoulder problem or rotator cuff tear that keeps you from exercising. Good luck with the tune-up!

Three times in the last several years, I have had physical problems bad enough to require a PT (physical therapist). Each time, the PT helped me get back to health. Two of these times, the PT allowed me to avoid surgery. I came away with great respect for the philosophies, skills, and knowledge that PTs have.

Now I find that, while I don't have any major physical problems, I need something to keep my body at its best. There are many books about staying fit past 50. I wanted one written by a PT. I could find two, this one and another book Marilyn Moffat wrote with Steve Vickery. This is by far the better book.

This book breaks fitness down into 5 categories: Posture, Strength, Balance, Flexibility, and Endurance. For each category, the book offers a series of simple self-evaluations. Then the book offers several exercises for each of these five categories. What makes this book particularly helpful is that exercises are targeted according to the results of the self-evaluations. I was able to find those areas where I need the most help, then target the exercises that help me the most.

Buy Age Defying Fitness: Making the Most of Your Body for the Rest of Your Life Now

As an exercise trainer myself, I was delighted to see a book on exercise by physical therapists, the real exercise specialists. Because they have the medical background to safely prescribe exercises which respect our aging joints, I highly recommend this book to those over 50 and those under 50 who want to embark on an exercise routine. It is well written, clear, concise and easily understandable and useable. Given that it is so necessary for all of us to work on maintaining good posture and balance, this book maps out exercises with precise instructions and photos to specifically focus on these areas. It provides an excellent explanation of the aging process and the changes that occur within our bodies, and then prescribes exercises to counteract and work with these changes. The exercises will help those who want to gain strength and endurance, increase flexibility, and improve balance. My personal recommendation (after you have read the book) is to suggest hiring a physical therapist to come to your home to help you fine tune your program, see that you are doing the exercises correctly, and to offer a few alternatives as well.

This is a book that will help ease you back into fitness. I recommend it to friends who would like to get started on a fitness program and don't know where to start, as well as a few who have injured themselves and want to continue exercising. To date, I've purchased three copies for myself and close friends.

Here's my experience with Age Defying Fitness. I purchased a copy after reading a NYT review with the goal of improving my posture. Upon receiving the book, I read the first seven pages then skipped to the chapter on posture. The next morning I took the posture self-assessment tests and got a baseline reading. Next I started through the chapter "8 Great Exercises for Posture". The exercises were challenging but doable and, before I knew it, I was doing them every day!

The improvement in my posture in the next three weeks was astounding, according to both the self-assessment tests and feedback from friends. I was so inspired I decided to work on my core muscles using the "8 Great Exercises for Neck and Trunk." Before I knew it my abs were strong and physical things I enjoy doing, like gardening, just got easier and easier.

I've made so much progress that I no longer regularly see my chiropractor for neck adjustments. Now I know how to release neck tension and have strengthened my back and abdominal muscles to the point that my body stays in good alignment every day. I've also been able to leverage what I learned to help me deeply relax at night. When I go to bed, I use one 10 second repetition of exercise 1, 4 and 5 from "8 great exercises for posture" and one repetition of each of the neck strengthening exercises from "8 great exercises for neck and trunk" (there are four of them) as a 3 minute relaxation sequence which prepares me to sleep.

I haven't made it through the other chapters yet. My physical progress resulting from the posture and core muscle training inspired me to start using my Bowflex again (which had become a sweater holder in the past year). However, I still do the posture and core muscle training from Age-Defying Fitness three times a week and my relaxation sequence every day to keep my posture going strong.

If you know you need to exercise and are wondering how to start, I recommend you buy this book and work your way through it. The self-asessment tests help you document your baseline and progress. Exercises are clearly written and there are photos that illustrate proper positioning for each one. Plus, each section of the book (there are five: posture, strength, flexibility, balance and endurance) starts with an explanation which helps you understand what was going on with your body as your fitness level declined over time and how to reverse the trend.

Get fit! You know you can do it. And when you do, you'll be telling others about this springboard to fitness.

To stay as healthy as possible for as long as possible is the goal of most of us . This book is aimed to help us in this quest. Its focus is on exercising as a means of improving our physical health. It recommends we begin by going to a physical therapist and assessing our physical health in five areas, posture, balance, flexibility, strength and endurance. After the assessment is made we then can begin to seek out the customized health plan we need.

According to the authors even the very old can improve their physical health by the proper forms of exercising. The book contains carefully described exercises to improve our situation in each of the areas involved. It also provides vital information regarding the areas concerned.

Its approach and recommendation is activist. Its implication is that leaving ourselves alone is not good enough. The physical processes of deterioration which take place for instance in bone density, and joint flexibility requre that we try to offset them through exercising.

There is no doubt that careful reading of this book, and application of its lessons will improve the health of most.
