Rosemary Gladstar's Herbal Recipes for Vibrant Health: 175 Teas, Tonics, Oils, Salves, Tinctures, an

Rosemary Gladstar's Herbal Recipes for Vibrant Health: 175 Teas, Tonics, Oils, Salves, Tinctures, and Other Natural Remedies for the Entire FamilyThis is a great reference book to have. I love the paperback version and I like the recipies. However, I also bought Rosemary Gladstar's Familiy Herbal, different title and different cover, thinking it was a different book. It is the EXACT same book page for page. So don't buy both.

I am new to the world of herbalism and have just begun exploring this ancient wisdom. This is the sixth book I have read on the topic. I am excited to try many of the recipes and have already ordered a few bulk herbs to make a few tinctures to treat the inevitable colds my household will suffer this winter. I am in awe and completely overwhelmed by the vast knowledge of Gladstar and authors like her. This was an enjoyable book to read.

That being said, I do have one critique of the book (or maybe the lifestyle suggested by the book, not sure which). The author suggests that readers ingest so many tinctures, tonics, teas, foods, etc... each day that I wondered how anyone could live this "natural" lifestyle without getting sick to their stomachs or becoming bankrupt. If I followed the advice in the book, I'd have neither the time nor money to do much else. Who has the time to make and drink several cups of several kinds of tea each day?? This is not realistic for a working mother with 4 children like myself. I understand that perhaps this is not what the author intended, but she does not really give clear advice as to how someone like me (who cannot buy 100 herbs and eat/drink them all day) can put together a sensible and affordable regimen.

All in all, great book. I will seek out others by this fascinating writer.

Rosemary Gladstar is in my opinion one of the "true" people in healing. She offers information in the manner of one who wants to share rather than with hold or profit. I believe her work with Seed Savers supports my view. This paper back book which I bought for less than fifteen dollars is a treasure trove of information. She wants people to understand plants and use them for good . She also communicates the need for respecting the plant world which is after all part of our world. Her recipes are clear and easy to follow. Her books are always near at hand and I use them often. This is a true bargain and a good investment. Thank you Rosemary!!!!

Ms. Gladstar truly has a great approach towards herbs. However, this book has it all which was to my surprise and pictures that are in color to help those who needs to know what the plant looks like to seek it out. It is truly one of the best herb reference books on the market today, even though, most of the remedies are towards women's health, there are plenty of topics for men as well with remedies. DO NOT over look this book if you are truly a lover of herbs and alternative health lifestyles with herbs this is highly recommended!!!

I love this book so much. My poor copy is dog-eared, book marked, high lighted and noted so much already!

If you are interested in learning how to take care of yourself without harmful OTC medications, toxic body care products and dangerous modern medical remedies, check this book out.

As it says, it has 175 recipes for everything you need: teas and tinctures for mental and physical health, lotions and potions for your body, and simple salves, ointments and balms for everyday bites, bumps, cuts and bruises.

I would also recommend www.mountainroseherbs.com for buying the herbs needed in these recipes. They sell organic and wildcrafted herbs and EVERYTHING you need to make the recipes in this book.

Enjoy your new craft! :)

Are You Ready!: Take Charge, Lose Weight, Get in Shape, and Change Your Life Forever

Are You Ready!: Take Charge, Lose Weight, Get in Shape, and Change Your Life ForeverFirst off, if you've every seen the show, then you know how Bob talks. This book seemed to ring with his voice on every page. It really does feel like you get a bit of Bob with you when reading this book.

What makes this book different from many other fitness/diet books is Bob deals with the emotional-mental side of things. He tries to get at the root of why we do what we do to ourselves and how to overcome that. For most people where emotions and food share a common thread, this helps you identify that thread and break it!

WHAT'S INSIDE:

Chapter 1 Are you Really Ready? Step One = he deals with your baggage and fears that are keeping you fat

Chapter 2 Accept Where You Are and Forgive: Step Two = You learn to reconnect with your body and forgive yourself for what you've done to it

Chapter 3 Love Yourself: Step Three = Building confidence and setting goals then staying positive

Chapter 4 Change Your Internal Tape Recorder, Change Yourself: Step Four = This is where he deals with emotional eating, mental hunger vs. physical hunger and provides a proactive formula

Chapter 5 It's an Eating Plan, Not a Diet = he explains a bit about foods and their relationship to weight loss. He then provides a great food list and then seven(7) options for a quick breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks

Chapter 6 Your Food Journal = Yes you need to start counting calories. You can photocopy the pages in this chapter to get you going with your own journal.

Chapter 7 Stress Busters = How to deal with dinning/eating out while on your plan; shopping strategies and then staying on course with your eating while in the real world

Chapter 8 Getting Started: Phase One = Introduction to exercise, including why monitor your heart rate. Also levels of exertion defined, basic equipment needed then his words on Cardio workouts

Chapter 9 My Master List = With over 65 exercises described and with most pictures of Bob performing the steps to the exercise. Though black & white, the photos are clear and easy to see what he describes the exercise performing

Chapter 10 The Workout = Three options for a week's worth of working out or you could look at it as 3 weeks of workouts. The options get progressively tougher. As someone like myself who is already fairly fit, Option 1 was too easy but Option 3 was a very good challenge.

OVERALL:

I liked this book, though the workout Bob puts together in the Biggest Loser book that came out first was a lot tougher (5 minutes of walking lunges and 7 minutes of crunches. Ack!).

This is a nice comprehensive book that hits the holistic experience of eating and working out and the challenges we go through starting and continuing a healthy process.

This book is a good addition to anyone's library.

I read this book, cover to cover, in 2 days and really enjoyed it. I think it is the perfect book for anyone who has a lot of weight to lose or for someone who is relatively new to working out. The book has a huge section of strength training exercises, which is great-especially for someone who is new to the weight room or concept of training with weights. I also enjoyed the food lists and recipe ideas.

I'm not sure how helpful this book is to someone who is already accustomed to working out and knows a lot about nutrition, but it a GREAT book for anyone in the beginner, intermediate range. I love how Bob combines mind and soul to make the weight loss a true, life-changing event.

I'm a huge fan of The Biggest Loser. I cry when the contestants lose weight. Bob Harper is a great guy the perfect counterpoint to Jillian Michaels drill sargeant persona. He appears to be kind, gentle, understanding, yet able to influence huge weight losses from the shows participants. I couldn't wait to get this CD and actually get a dose of the whole "Change Your Life" package. The truth is, there's really nothing new here. Bob tells us that we must get our insides together in order to be successful at changing our outsides; that we need to eat healthy foods and exercise at least 5 days a week. He tells us that if we screw up, we don't beat ourselves up. All this is delivered in Bob's charming, encouraging style. There is an enhancement to the CD that allows you to read his food list, sample menus & all of his prescribed exercises (or download the PDF version & print it out). I think that if you ordered the CD you will still want to get the book. There's too much information on supplements, exercise plans and implementation stages. I suspect that the book may have more details. My 4 star rating has nothing to do with what I think of Bob Harper. However, if you've been dieting/exercising for any length of time, you've probably already got this.

I've been watching Bob Harper since he started on The Biggest Loser, and his book is just like he is on TV--positive and upbeat. It's all about fixing what is wrong with you emotionally before attempting to fix what's wrong with your diet. He is all about empowerment and shares personal stories to help solidify the need to balance your Inner Compass.

The nutrition advice is really helpful, and it never seems like he's telling you what to do. Instead, he shares with you and reinforces the fact that you shouldn't give up if you mess up once or twice. He stresses effort, and discipline that comes with personal growth.

This is definitely a book for beginners. This book, coupled with his Biggest Loser workout DVD, will have you well on the right track toward living a better, more healthful life.

Thanks Bob.

I don't know about you, but I start off every year with a fresh batch of diet books and exercise DVDs. And every year by the end of the first week I still haven't tried a single recipe. And the exercise DVDs have been watched and deemed too tough for any human to get through.

This year I wanted to find something that would help me lose weight and keep it off for good. They say if you want to grow as a person get in a new relationship. Every piece of baggage from previous romances shows up.

Well the same thing happens when you decide to change your eating habits. Every piece of your dieting emotional, mental and physical past rears its ugly head and preys on you via your inner fat critic.

Where the majority of diet books ignore the "diet baggage" we all carry, Bob gets you to deal with it BEFORE you jump into a healthy eating and exercise plan. He has trained enough people in his life to know that even the most dedicated dieters at some point will back off when their inner fat critic starts to stalk them.

Bob's book is for those of us who continue to yo-yo diet and cannot figure out why we keep starting over again. He provides a concrete plan for resolving inner sabotage. And while this is not a substitute for serious psychological problems that require professional help, it is a great place to start for those who just need a four step plan to lose weight permanently.

The Nontoxic Home & Office

The Nontoxic Home & OfficeI got this from the library and was surprised that 15 years after publishing, it is still a good book with lots of relevant information. The author walks you through basically each part of your home or office and points out the trouble spots and how to address them (e.g. something like your clothing one problem is the fabric finishes the solution is to buy natural, avoid things like no-iron or no-wrinkle, wash before wearing). This is a practical book focused on what you can do, not just what the problems are. Easy to read, well organized.

I had to chuckle a bit on the section on typewriter correction fluid and things like that that show the book's age. Most is still very relevant though. Amazing how so much can be the same 15 years later. Obviously, there is not nearly as much on electronics as I think there would be today.

Overall a good, practical read.

The Herbal Home Remedy Book: Simple Recipes for Tinctures, Teas, Salves, Tonics, and Syrups (Herbal

The Herbal Home Remedy Book: Simple Recipes for Tinctures, Teas, Salves, Tonics, and SyrupsI purchased this book hoping that it would guide me in the creation of herbal remedies -I'd always had a culinary herb garden and wanted to expland my horizons. I wasn't disappointed -there were many simple recipes for decoctions, poultices, and other non-culinary herb uses. However, some -okay, many! -of the descriptions and instructions were beyond what the simple practicioner or budding herbalist could understand. In the end, I just use the recipes I've marked and ignore the rest of the book.

Simpling refers to a method of learning herbalism. Choose an herb and explore every facet of it leaves, petals roots, uses, dangers inside and out. When you finally "know" that, then and only then, choose a second herb to get to know. This book is an amazing primer for beginners to herbalism. I chafed its simplicity at first, "More herbs! Its too basic!", until I really began to learn my first herb, catnip. Then I realized how silly I'd been and how very much there was to learn. This book is a bible for beginners!

I have to say that I was rather shocked to read another review's comment that many of the recipes in this book were beyond the beginner's grasp.... This has not been my experience at all. I use this book for most all of my students and have had great success with it. It's simple, totally down to earth and gives a very firm grasp of old fashioned downhome herbalism (the best kind in my not so humble opinion). I love her focus on 25 very common (and often overlooked herbs) that almost any of us can access no matter where we are. I also love her rather unfashionable uses of homemade herbal wines and vinegars, that are a fabulous and gentle choice for the home herbalist (not to mention cheap and practical). She also focuses on using food as medicine and lifestyle as medicine, which are of course, really the only medicine that work in the long run. Joyce does a really lovely job of making the best of herbal medicine accessable and joyous. Of the probably hundreds of herb books I've read, this remains a classic for me, easily in my top ten best herb books.

I would also recommend books by Susun Weed, Juliette Levy, Gail Faith Edwards, Judith Berger, Stephen Buhner, Michael Moore and Matthew Wood for more great writing in a similair earth loving vein.

Does not cover alot of different herbs but the ones that she does cover are usually easy to find and prove very multi-faceted. The book has a nice section on preparing herbs ,tinctures etc..that is easy even for beginning herbal enthusiasts as well as a handy "symptom guide" to find what will work in different situations quickly. The cover art is not all glossy or artsy like some but instead much like the content within... natural, workable & easy to get into. I use this book often and will continue to until we are both old and worn.(-_-)

This book is not the only book you will own but it is the first one I bought to learn some of the basics. If you want an overview of some of the most useful and available herbs this is what you want.

I like it for it's down-to-earth advice and easy to understand (and do) instructions.

I also purchased Readers Digest "Herbs" which is great for the photography of herbs so I can identify them in the wild.

Stuck in the Middle: Shared Stories And Tips For Caregiving Your Elderly Parents

Stuck in the Middle: Shared Stories And Tips For Caregiving Your Elderly ParentsI was very disappointed with this book. Based on all the glowing 5-star reviews (friends, perhaps?), I expected something far better than what I got. As a caregiver in the thick of things, it told me nothing I didn't already know, and the information was presented in a random, haphazard way. At one place, the author seemed to be confused about even the basics of Medicare and Medicaid, a critical error in discussing elder issues.

The stories themselves were very poorly written, and could use the services of a good editor at the very least. I was so distracted by the bad writing that I thought to myself, "how in the world did this get published?? It must be a self-published book." Sure enough, it was.

This is the first time I've ever written a review for Amazon, because it's the first time I've ever felt the need to warn others away from purchasing a book!

Don't waste your money. Instead, buy Jane Gross' memoir "A Bittersweet Season." It offers far more usable, helpful information than this shoddy, unprofessional attempt.

Many of "Stuck in the Middle's" range of true stories reflect my own family's physical, emotional, financial and spiritual journey caring for our parents. I'm glad my mom honored and personally cared for my paralyzed dad for 13 years. And I'm glad my siblings and I helped Mom remain at home despite debilitating strokes requiring round-the-clock nursing for several years until her death. But the cost, especially on two sets of siblings and their families was huge. We could have used this book to help us all "count the cost" and better conserve our own health and finances while supporting Mom. I am not a natural planner; but "Stuck" prods me to begin to research and lay out a plan for my own future, and to honestly engage my children in this. So my copy of the book will be highlighted and dog-eared! I now work in a home health company involved in Person Centered Care, and I intend to refer others to "Stuck in the Middle."

This book was so meaningful to me that I gave a copy to a dear friend who has been trying to "hold it together" while caring for her 98 year-old mother. In her "Thank You" note she wrote, "I have read "Stuck in the Middle" and, whaddaya know, there are others out there just like me some are much worse off I feel fortunate. I appreciate so much your thinking of me with the book it is comforting to read how others have coped and get the little hints and tidbits that they offer."

The real-life testimonies in this book provide a rare glimpse into the personal and inter-personal dynamics in every family and every care-giving situation. These often-unaddressed human elements set the tone for the entire care-giving experience and are every bit as challenging to navigate as the more recognized practical aspects and stages of care giving. Thankfully this book gives important and reassuring insights into the entire care-giving journey--from practical tips on such matters as legal preparations to staying emotionally and physically healthy as caregiver.
