Harvard Medical School Guide to Healing Your Sinuses (Harvard Medical School Guides)

Harvard Medical School Guide to Healing Your SinusesThis is a good book if you know nothing at all about your sinus condition. However, I had already gathered much of this information from good websites. There were a couple of interesting things that I wasn't aware of, but the bottom line is, how is this going to help me? Is it going to give me new ideas so I can get better? Unfortunately, it didn't. If you've already tried nasal irrigations, decongestants, steroid sprays, antihistamines, possible allergy shots and antibiotics, then you know all you can know about treating sinusitis without surgery. If you are facing surgery, then maybe the chapters on what to expect will be useful.

The information is coherent and well organized. Yes, it is possible one can glean much of the information from other sites on the Internet. However, doing so would take twice as long as reading the book and one can never tell when they are receiving advice from a real doctor or a quack. Everything in this book is backed by a Clinical Professor at Harvard. Not only does that offer peace of mind, it also gives you an upper hand when trying to get the correct medication from your doctor. "I read in this book by Ralph B Metson from Harvard..." goes a lot farther than "I read on an Internet site somewhere..." I wish I could have read this book years ago.

Of note:

The recommended salt usage for nasal wash is a bit high. Some prefer it that high, I recommend doing Internet research and trying less salt at first, ESPECIALLY if you notice a stinging sensation. Never, ever try to force water through a clogged nose!!

The explanation of Zicam in the book is not quite correct. Zicam is *marketed* as homeopathy, but it is not really homeopathic; it actually contains Zinc. Homeopathy is just water.

Also, I was told Atrovent (in that form) was taken off the market.

I picked up a copy of this book because I have sinusitis. I found the book to be extremely helpful in understanding my problems and in instructing what to do about them. It is written in a way that anyone can understand. You don't have to be a doctor to get what the book is talking about, but it didn't seem so basic that it was patronizing like some medical books for non-doctors. I also liked that it was easy to skip around and I didn't feel like I had to read it from beginning to end. Each chapter stood on its own as helpful in and of itself. I would recommend this book to anyone who has sinus problems.

The Harvard Guide to Healing Your Sinuses is a valuable resource, which is written in easy-to-understand language that details various sinus conditions, including ones that might seem like sinusitis but are not, and numerous strategies for treating them. In addition, discussions of treatments include helpful thoughts on various methods of sinus surgery, how to prepare for surgery if needed, and what to expect.

I appreciate how, on pages 162-163, Dr. Metson and Mr. Mardon cite empty nose syndrome (ENS) as a "troubling phenomenon," which results from an overly aggressive surgery of the turbinates (inner nasal mucus-producing tissue that performs many critical functions). The description of ENS is accurate, and I am grateful it is noted as a complication of surgery, as not all sinus self-help books acknowledge ENS.

When discussing treatments, The Harvard Guide to Healing Your Sinuses mentions zicam, which is the oral spray form of zinc. The authors note while zinc has been shown to reduce the duration of a cold, particularly when used at the onset of symptoms, it must be sprayed into the nose every four hours for one to two weeks to be effective. A word of caution, though, which also should be highlighted, is that spraying high concentrations of zicam in the nose can lead to burning and destruction of olfactory epithelium, the nerve cells responsible for smell. Consequently, some users of zicam have permanently lost their sense of smell.

This book definitely has much useful information on sinusitis from a highly reputable source. It is a great reference book for sinus sufferers.

This is the most comprehensive book I've read on sinuses. It is written so that the average person can understand what goes on inside your sinuses, what the problem areas are, but most importantly, what can be done to get relief. I was also very fortunate to have had surgery by Dr. Metson. Each day I continue to improve and feel like a brand new person. This book is a must for anyone who is suffering. I HIGHLY recommend getting this book.

Healing Childhood Ear Infections: Prevention, Home Care, and Alternative Treatment

Healing Childhood Ear Infections: Prevention, Home Care, and Alternative TreatmentMy 4 year old daughter was diagnosed with reduced hearing 7 months ago; turned out she had fluid in both ears. The ENT (ears, nose, throat specialists) put her on antibiotics. Did nothing. Then we went away for a month and upon our return, we had her checked again. Fluid had decreased in 1 ear but was still strong in the other. ENT feared it would impact her learning (the decreased hearing) and lead to ear infections (they couldn't believe she hadn't had any, to my knowledge, since she was about 2). In the meantime, my 1.5 year old son also had 1 ear infection after the other, and when we returned from our trip he also was checked fluid in both ears, plus a lingering infection they treated with antibiotics. They strongly urged me to get tubes in their ears. Our niece had them inserted and my sister as well as everyone else said it's no big deal, the worst part is seeing your child unconscious as it's general anaesthesia, but they bounce right back. I made the surgery appt and then my dad sent me an article from the Wall Street Journal citing studies that concluded the tube surgery is done way too often, and unnecessarily. Since this was coming from my very conservative dad, I thought I'd better question establishment. So I got this book, "Healing Childhood Ear Infections" by Dr. Schmidt. After 1 chapter I canceled the surgery. Instead, I got them into chiropractic care, removed dairy (cows milk) from their diets, and took them to a naturopath who put them on 3 supplements: minerals for their immune systems, and something to thin the mucous. Today I took my daughter to the ENT for a check-up (1 month after trying alternative treatments) and they were shocked no more fluid, perfect hearing! You should have seen how proud she was when they told us. My son still remains to be checked, but knock on wood, has been infection-free since I started all this. The kids love the chiropractor my son screams when his turn is over and there are plenty of dairy alternatives out there (soy is also to be avoided or at least moderated but my son loves goats milk yoghurt). The supplements mix in with their juices so they don't even notice them. Anyway, I'm telling you this so that you question your own kids' treatments. According to this book, once a kid is on antibiotics it's very likely he'll develop another infection (ear) soon thereafter. In most countries, they're not even prescribed unless the baby is under 1 or has had a high fever (over 101) for 3 days. Plus, this book stated that most US children have a very nutrient-defficient diet and in particular lack minerals such as magnesium & zinc, which are very important for the immune system. Hopefully you can all benefit from this and although I don't know which of my 3 forms of treatment did the trick with my daughter, I'm going to continue all 3. Thank goodness for this book, which gave me the tools and the courage to try safer alternatives.

This book was just what I was looking for! My son was battling repeated ear infections and I knew there had to be other options than antibiotics and ear tubes. I am so glad I read this before we progressed to surgery. I am now an active homeopathic user, and my son has been earache free for months!

I thank the author for presenting all the options available.

This a book I should have reviewed a long time ago. I am really writing a review on the first version of this book which was published about 20 years ago! Imagine that.

I still remember the day I realized my son was reliving *my* life as a child. I was sick with upper respiratory infections almost since the day I was born. The only difference is that no one thought this was unusual now. It was that thought combined with the difference of opinions about treatment between the pediatricians seeing my son and the pediatricians I worked with that sent me looking.

I went to a store that sold herbs and alternative remedies and this book was there. I read it that night and we began using the options in the book. What a change. No more stuff dripping from his nose, no more weepy eyes, no more crying, no more trips to the pediatrician (which of course can lead to more illness because that is what most kids are there for of course), no more vomiting (some of the antibiotics are not always well-tolerated), no more sleepless nights sitting up in the rocking chair, we could turn of the humidifier.

We were all much happier and healthier too. It is quite important to note that a key factor in what everyone calls alternative medicine is that it is taylored to each person and their specific needs. Unlike aliopathic medicine which seeks to find that one magical solution to all woes, alternatives *can* take some time. This because so clear to me when I asked the pediatricians I worked with for a second opinion. Doctors tend to base their prescriptions and treatments based on what *they* know and what they believe works, not necessarily what the patient is needing.

We used what we learned with our first child and our second son bypassed all of that misery. My oldest is now just shy of 20 and is quite healthy and happy. I also want to share some information related to learning disabilities. I believe the repeated fevers and infections played a role in some minor learning disabilities my son displayed as he went through elementary school. Again, though because of what we learned about alternatives from this book, we sought out treatments and today you would never even know he had issues.

As a side note, I must also say I was lucky enough to meet the author as he lived nearby at the time the first edition of this book was published. He is intelligent, kind, thoughtful, and very conscientious.

OK, I do not do reviews that often. But, this book needed one!! My son had 4 double ear infections between 3-5 months of age. We met with the ear doctor on 5/7. She said he needed tubes asap b/c of some hearing loss due to the fluid in his ears. We set the surgery for tubes up for 5/15.

I got the book that afternoon and read it on the 7th and 8th. I scheduled an appointment for the doctor and I to sit down and talk on the 9th b/c I decided that maybe tubes was not the answer....yet. After meeting, the doctor was still set on tubes. I thought about it over the weekend and on Monday 5/12 I cancelled the appointment for the 16th. It is now the 23rd and the fluid has gone away in one ear completely and the other still has fluid but it has only been a few weeks.

This book not only tells different things to do to alleviate the problems it also tells you the risks involved. The doctor did not tell us these things and when I brought them up, she downplayed them. Two of the risks were weakening of the eardrum in up to 40% (I think) of the patients which could lead to ear drum rupture later in life. My husband had had 3 ruptured ear drum incidents and he had tubes as a child. Hmmmmmm. The other was issues with scar tissue hardening around the incision. I don't know if I am explaining that right. I don't have the book in front of me. Anyway they were serious issues.

So, I am having his ears monitored for 4-8 weeks and if they don't get better, I will have the tubes put in. But, one is better already.

READ THE BOOK BEFORE YOU PLAN THE SURGERY!!!!!

Loved the opportunity to read a book that suggests alternate ways to address ear infections. We had been searching for answers and recommendations other than the standard medical response. We tried many of the recommendations, against the recommendation of our MDs, but unfortunately they did not work for our child. We changed our diets, stroked the lymph nodes religiously, added supplements, etc. We even tried chiropractic with a highly recommended person with 50% pediatrics in their practice, but our child ended up with long-term complications (numbness in extremities, dizziness, neck pain imagine this is from compressed spinal cord/brain stem but 10 months later we are still trekking from MD to MD trying to get the complications improved since there is NO way we will have him adjusted again and risk permanent paralysis). I would recommend people try techniques in this book because maybe they will work for your child, but PLEASE be careful with spinal adjustments, particularly working around the occiput!

The Doctors Book of Home Remedies: Quick Fixes, Clever Techniques, and Uncommon Cures to Get You Fee

The Doctors Book of Home Remedies: Quick Fixes, Clever Techniques, and Uncommon Cures to Get You Feeling Better FastI guess since its the DOCTORS version of HOME remedies they are going to send you to the drug store first for most everything. I was really hopeing for more at home remedies. Im all into natural cures that most docs dont even know about. No where did it reccomend the plant plantain for bug bite itch. It did have the bananna peel remedy for warts but it was in a small side box after it reccomended you get compound W from the store. Im not hapy with it at all. I was looking for HOME remedies. Most of the book is common sense, like for bug bites it tells you not to get bit in the first place. DUHHH. I guess I was looking more for homeopathy not what the doctor will tell you. You know the stuff you gr grandmother would have done. This book is going in the yardsale!

Namaste

I checked out several home remedy books from the library and this one was by far the most informative, most thorough and most interesting. It describes the illness/injury in detail and gives multiple suggestions for at home remedies to keep you out of the doctor's office. But it also tells you when to go to the doctor. The book is full of common sense advice and remedies that include items that most people would have at home or could easily get from the drug store. If you're looking for a book of natural remedies that strictly uses herbs, essential oils or pressure points you might want to keep looking.

How to Care for Aging Parents

How to Care for Aging ParentsI just had to give a review when I stumbled across this at Amazon. My father went from being healthy and independent to just the opposite in one day (from a fallthen into hospital, caught an infection and went downhill from there.)There was a TON of things to figure out from medicare to power of attorney, where to place him, what to expect etc.... This book is written with such kindness and is full of information that is invaluable. At least for me, it was exactly what I needed. And if you're going through this, I wish you all the best.

As we venture into this new and unknown territory taking care to those whom we always depended on to take care of us this is the first, second and only book you need. In a gentle and humorous way, Ms. Morris guides you through all of the aspects of this unknown road including the medical, legal, mental, physical, etc. Maybe my favorite chapter is the one in which Ms. Morris insists that you make sure of taking care of yourself first. I saw Ms. Morris on "Oprah" and bought the book for my "first parent". Now the book comes out "bigger, better, and improved" for my second parent. Strange to think that a book can be such a gift to our real lives. I can not recommend this book more strongly.

I picked this up to learn how I could help my mother take care of her father and found it extremely helpful. It is written in clear, understandable language, with several personal accounts scattered throughout, as well as information on where to go for more help. And you WILL need more help but this book does a great job of pointing you in the right direction. It makes a very complex problem seem manageable. There are at least 50 pages at the back of the book that provide contact information on elder care agencies, geriactric care managers, elder care lawyers, etc.

I'm not one for self-help books, but when my father's Alzheimers began to consume him and jeopardize my mother's physical, mental, and financial condition, I turned to this book for help and found it more valuable than I ever could have imagined. It is filled with easy-to-follow advice and very practical steps that can be taken to address your situation. The author has done so much research and identified so many resources that reading the book saves untold time and agony. I only wish I had found it sooner.

This book is an exceptional reference for anyone who may care for an elder, who is taking care of their elder, making funeral arrangements for them, or who is settling their estate. It is comprehensive. The book includes, among other things, ways to approach sensitive topics with one's parents, preparing to contain crisis management, signs that an elder may need help, options, resources and best practices for application at any point from full health through closing an elder's estate. Additionally, the author understands the emotional and physical impact to the care giver and offers very helpful recommendations. This book was a tremendous help to me and, because of its pointers, my father. I used this book for the three years I had the privilege to be my Dad's care giver. I have given this book as a gift to numerous friends who have shared it with their friends and family.

Strength Training For Seniors: An Easy & Complete Step By Step Guide For YOU (Ultimate How To Guides

Strength Training For Seniors: An Easy & Complete Step By Step Guide For YOUI'm just recovering from foot surgery and have been cleared to start my workouts again.. but as usual it's hard to get started. Jason Scott has included everything in this book you need to know for strength training: from Why Strength Training to a Program for strenthg training, suggested excercies and measuring progress. It help me to decide to get off the sidelines and get started.

This easy to read book was nice to read and informative. I did learn quite a few things (like glucose levels and sleep are improved more through strength training than medication). I bought a house last year and have allowed my work on it to dissuade me from my regular workout routine. This book has refreshed my memory about my absolute need as I get older to return to strength training and walking/hiking. I am now determined to start first thing in the morning, and my goal is to once again be able to keep up with my son as we jogged for the car! Thanks for the inspiration!

The Gleason's Gym Total Body Boxing Workout for Women: A 4-Week Head-to-Toe Makeover

The Gleason's Gym Total Body Boxing Workout for Women: A 4-Week Head-to-Toe MakeoverBeing a Personal Trainer, I enjoy reading all the fitness books that hit the market. Most of them have gimmicky workouts and strict eating regimens that are almost impossible to maintain long enough to see good results. Admittedly, I thought this book would be the same. Boxing for women? Surely some marketing genius was riding the coattails of a blockbuster movie, but what the heck... I am a trainer... it is what I do.

World-renowned trainer Hector Roca and owner of Gleason's Gym (an icon in the world of boxing), Bruce Silverglade, have published boxing secrets for women in The Gleason's Gym Total Body Boxing Workout for Women. This book outlines a step-by-step program that promises to get any woman into knockout shape in just four weeks.

Four weeks? Okay, so everyone knows that boxing is a dynamic exercise program in and of itself, but four weeks? I had to put it to the test. I read the book, looked over the drawings that I found particularly appealing to the female eye, learned the moves and got started, but I was mystified. Where was the strict eating plan? I searched the book cover to cover to find that the eating plan for a boxer was just using common sense, and that the best food for boxers was beans and rice! My vegetarian self was overjoyed! I can eat my carbs and get lean too? I was eager to put this program to the test!

Using unique combinations of muscle groups and both aerobic and weight training movements, this program works out the entire body at one time! Very effective and time saving, this program won't send you to the poor house either; all you are going to need is a jump rope and the motivation to get started (look at Hillary Swank's arms in Million Dollar Baby). Hector Roca takes you from how to make a fist all the way to awesome combinations. The most difficult part for me was getting reaquainted with my jump rope. Boxers jump rope because it helps with balance, speed, agility and it burns fat like nothing else!

So here I sit 4 weeks after starting the program. Does it work? Well, it worked for me. I am down 8 lbs. and 6 inches. If you need to switch up to a more exciting workout program that won't leave you starving but give you results, I highly recommend $2.00 jump rope, a bean burrito and this book.

I've been punching a heavy bag off and on for couple of years now and I knew just really basics on how to hit the bag and other things of that nature. Well I haven't been doing much at all lately and getting a little out of shape....So the wife and I decided that we would like to get back into our excercise routine. I went back to boxing, and she was jealous because my workout looked fun and hers was repetitive. She asked to be shown how to hit the bag, and I showed her basics, but other than that I didn;t even know. So the next day I went online and looked up reviews on boxing excercise regiments and this book kept coming up...I became intrigued and ordered the book. Well let me tell you just the basics I thought I knew I needed to make adjustments, and this book should be called boxing for dummy's. It teaches you everything from stance, to punching to movements, to lifting to you name it...if it's in boxing this book covers it. So I bought this book for my wife, but I got just as much use out of it as she has been getting.

Highly recommended!

I found this book to be well done. It has a 4-week workout schedule with three workouts per week. I am on the third week and not only are my arm muscles developing, but they glow when I finish a workout and I feel great. This is a full-body workout you don't stand still and push your arms around. In addition to 3-minute round-style combo punches and defense, you jump rope and do strength exercises (push ups, crunches, flutter kicks). The instruction is well-illustrated and the book does a great job of motivating you. This can be an intense workout, but you'll feel stronger after each one. You really need to put your all into the workout no half-hearted punches, and no cheating!

I purchased this book to start boxing for fitness, and I love it. These are actual punches and combos you could take to the ring someday, if you wanted. I also purchased a DVD boxing video and I find myself drifting off and going back to this book because it encourages you to practice numerous combos and come up with your own unique workout, not a boring jab, jab, right, hook, repeat 10 times.

Get a pair of gloves (mine are pink), pick up this book, and really work off the pounds.

I bought this book to supplement the boxing workouts I recently started with my trainer to 'shake up' my exercise routine. The book provided a great explanation for the sport and how I, as a woman, could benefit without getting all bulked up or even having to step in a ring, although I hope to do that at some point. As an almost-62-year-old woman, it feels good to be able to apply the books routines to my workouts and know I'm joining the ranks of so many younger female boxers with ease...well, 'ease' may not be the best word choice since it really kicks my #@%! The quotes and tips throughout are also helpful. I showed my trainer and he loved it, too. I may have to visit Gleason's Gym the next time I'm in NY!
