The Natural Pharmacy: Complete Home Reference to Natural Medicine

The Natural Pharmacy: Complete Home Reference to Natural MedicineThis is a great starter book for people who are interested in natural remedies for common ailments. It is very easy to use, easy to read, and unintimidating. For every ailment or illness, it gives the usual natural remedies I have found in other books. And it has a pretty good list of vitamins, herbs and homeopathic remedies. However, it isn't the most comprehensive book I've seen. There are some herbs that I couldn't find. But overall, if you want a basic guide, this is a good one to start with.

Walk into a bookstore and you can be overwhelmed with the HEALTH information thrown at you . . . particularly if you are interested in understanding how you can play a more active role in your own prevention, treatment and cure of disease. The Natural Pharmacy gives you just the right balance of useful information without insulting your intelligence or burying you in biochemistry. The book is organized around health concerns in English, not medical-ese, the authors provide you with dietary & lifestyle changes that maybe helpful before they tell you about other approaches including nutritional supplements and herbs. They cover side effects and interactions as well. They also provide a tremendous resource for insomniacs by listing more than 3,500 references! You can also look up specific nutritional supplements, herbs and homeopathic remedies as well. A nicely done work!

After several negative experiences with local doctors, I decided to look into alternative medicines. I spent a lot time in Barnes and Noble reading a number of books. I purchased many books over the internet, including from Amazon. THIS is the book that I go to whenever I have a question. THIS is the book I buy and give to other people. THIS is the book that answers my questions. THIS is the book that lists what happens if you take too much of an herb or vitamin. THIS is the book gives you the history and practical uses for the herbs and vitamins. THIS is the book that you can look up problems in and see what herbs/vitamins will help you.

If you buy one book about herbs and vitamins then THIS should be that book!!

Strategies for the C-Section Mom: A Complete Fitness, Nutrition, and Lifestyle Guide

Strategies for the C-Section Mom: A Complete Fitness, Nutrition, and Lifestyle GuideThere are SO MANY negative & scary c-section books out there, but this one is trying to focus on how to make the most of it and recover well. It is especially helpful for those who had a c-section, may have tried a vbac but it didn't work out, and are most likely going to have future c-sections. I have had 3 c-sections and am about to have a 4th, and found this book true to what my experience has been. This book gives the details that you need to know in order to make informed choices without being overly negative, nor sugar-coating things either. I was very impressed to read about the 7 suture vs. 3 suture methods that surgeons use, and how much better the 7 suture method is for a quicker recovery, less risk of internal bleeding, and (after talking to my own doctor) finding out that it also increases your chances of a successful vbac in that the muscles heal stronger with the 7-suture method. This book has the attitude that "if c-sections are the deck of cards that you've been dealt, here is how do deal with it to optimize healing and recover well." There are exercise plans for months out after the actual surgery, strategies for diet and managing stress, in order to maximize healing.

I highly recommend this book for the c-section mom.

I'm still reading this book! I wish I read this before my first c section. Good to know more on what's going to happen during and after your c section.

I was disappointed in this book. It was well written and had some excellent information about exercise. If the title of the book had been "A Complete Exercise Program for the C-Section Mom" this book would probably earn 5 stars. However, I bought it expecting equal coverage of nutrition and lifestyle tips. There was nutrition information, but very little to do with anything else.

This book has a lot of good information and I really like the part that includes the diet and how to keep a healthy life style. However I was unable to implement the plan as stated in the book. I tried to follow it and get started gently, I even waited a few extra days to start, but I would get a lot of bleeding and pain the next day.

I consider myself a fit person, ran a 5K right before getting pregnant, but I was in bed rest during my pregnancy and that might have influenced my ability to exercise. I really wanted to have it work for me, but it didn't. I am almost 5 months post-partum and walking a lot. My belly is going down and I do not have the infamous "C-section pouch".

Feng Shui and Health: The Anatomy of a Home: Using Feng Shui to Disarm Illness, Accelerate Recovery

Feng Shui and Health: The Anatomy of a Home: Using Feng Shui to Disarm Illness, Accelerate Recovery, and Create Optimal Healthin 1999 I read Nancy SantoPietro's first book, and was so interested that I called her for a consultation. I was very unhappy with job, my home, my health Nancy took the time to explain why Black Hat Sect Feng Shui works and how it worked and gave me a list of things to do. Well since that time, I have a new job, my apt. is always neat no stagnant energy and lo and behold, my bouts with bronchitis have ceased. When this new book came out, I was eager to buy it and read it, because it makes so much sense. It is honest, readable, and you can tell that she wrote the book wanting to help people, not just because Feng Shui is "hot" right now. She is one practitioner that really cares about her clients. I highly recommend her as a Feng Shui practitioner and both her books are very, very easy to read and her advice is also easy to follow. My life has improved tremendously since SantoPietro's Feng Shui expertise touched my life and I hope others will be encouraged to read her books so they too can be helped!

As a Feng Shui practitioner and a holistic nurse, I find this book an excellent resource for helping my clients heal their homes and themselves. Nancy combines the bagua and the chakras with great knowledge and experience. I'm glad Nancy places more importance on healing than on traditional compass placement which tends to instill fear in clients.

After reading Nancy's first book Feng Shui:Harmony By Design, I was looking forward to reading her second. The way she connects health issues, home environments and your Chakra energy system is groundbreaking, refreshing and changing the way that we will understand, diagnose and treat illness in this new millennium! It was very informative, user-friendly and it brings a new awareness to anyone who is looking for emotional, spiritual and environmental answers that cannot always be found in the traditional medical community.

I bought this book about 2 years ago. I am here getting the link to the page to recommend it to another person and though I would write a review. I wasn't sure if feng shui would actually help any of my issues but wow. I mean just reading it, it was like doing a dream interpretation and it was describing my life. She said if you put your bed behind a door, stuff would go on behind your back which was happening and the cleaver designed house sleeping on the blade wall or putting things against it would result in losses and severings(the garage pokes out in front making the house design like a cleaver with handle). My ex was sleeping in the room with his bed to the blade wall when I separated from him and then when he left I moved into that room and had all sorts of losses happen to myself including health. When I moved things around as she suggested (which her method doesnt use a compass and goes by the enterance to the room and is quite easy) things automatically started improving. My health, my support system, I was on disability and got off and got a job, the contension in my life with my ex left and he left me alone, money got amazing and I went in one year from being on disability and renting a home to buying my own... I truly recommend her techniques. Hard to believe changing furniture around can change your life but I guess life is like dreaming and everything is symbolic and energy, and you can use the dream, energy and symbols to understand and to manifest...

Making Faces

Making FacesKevin Acoin's book Making Faces is exquisite! As a makeup artist familiar with Kevin's work, I thought this book was going to be just a book filled with trade secrets and inside tips.Once I opened to the 3rd or 4th page, I realised how wrong I was.Not only did I find information that was useful beyond anything I learned in Beauty school, it was full of probably the most beautiful collection of photographs I have ever seen.It really takes a true genious to transform so many gorgeous women into other gorgeous women who look nothing like them.I really liked how he chose to use traditional movie roles as inspiration for some of the pictures.I think this allows the reader to recreate the role of the inginue or heroine!! There is also a really wonderful lesson on facial bone structure that really helps to understand how contouring and highlighting certain areas is really important to bring out a womans (or in a few cases..a mans)features.I photocopied it and stuck it to my bathroom mirror as a guide for applying eyeshadow. The only thing that I didnt like about the book is that he didn't mention the products used. Some women will find it a little difficult to find liquid eyeshadow and gold fleck dust!! I think had he given the brand names it would be a lot easier to find the products. This book is definitely a must for any makeup artist, cosmetic consumer, and any woman who wants to feel beautiful!

This book was incredibly frustrating for me. Yes, the makeovers are beautiful. But a lot of the photographs are completely worthless -they're in profile, or they're black and white, or they're soft-focus. There's almost no advice on how to choose a quality makeup product or tool. Most frustrating for me was the fact that the breakdowns on the photographs are egregiously incomplete -in the Lisa Marie Presley ponytail photo, for example, she's obviously wearing a dark eyeshadow in the crease but there's no crease color mentioned, and in the Trish Goff colored eyeshadow photo she's wearing multiple shades of shadow even though it only says she's wearing one.

The other thing that drove me nuts about this book is that almost every single eye shadow look is achieved exclusively with black, white, grey, or brown eyeshadow. I hate basic neutrals and I don't feel they flatter me. I wanted to be shown how to do interesting looks with some colors -plums, blues, olives? -and there are literally only three photos in the whole book that have colored eyeshadow. It's really a bizarre juxtaposition of basic, neutral looks with looks that are way too dramatic for anyone but a drag queen or a movie star; nothing in between. Also, it really aggravated me that everyone has flawless skin despite the claims that minimal or no foundation is used.

What I do like about this book is the application techniques (instead of just products) and the stellar contouring photo. I also really appreciate the obvious effort made to include women of color. Conclusion: good for the makeup novice or the average woman, or someone who just likes watching transformations. For the person who already has a good grasp on makeup techniques, though, this book is an exercise in frustration.

I love playing with new looks and colors and this book is the perfect tool on how to make it easy and fun while getting professional looking results. It will help you discover exciting new looks you never dreamed of and the full potential of every makeup tool you own. The instructions on how to accomplish every look in the book are clearly illustrated step-by-step, making them extremely easy to follow. The advice given by the author comes alive with his own funny anecdotes on discovering and experimenting with makeup.

This book is extremely well organized into three sections. The first one covers the basics of what you need to know about each part of your face, how to apply makeup to each, which tools to use and how to enhance and get the most benefit from your strongest features. The second one shows you makeovers done on ordinary people that look like you and me. It includes before and after pictures that show the impact of well-applied makeup on every kind of skin and color combination. The third section is the most impressive part of the book. It shows known celebrities made up like other celebrities that have established iconic looks over the years. (Look for Lisa Marie-Presley as Marilyn Monroe and Isabella Rosellini as Barbra Streisand).

This book also includes a few male makeup techniques, from the conservative (using concealer and powder) to the adventurous (using eyeliner and eyeshadow) to the extremist (using everything from powder and blush to lipstick and a wig).

Although there are three or four extreme looks in this book that I don't think I will ever try, all of the rest can be applied just as they are or with slight modifications. The great advice, easy to follow instructions, funny anecdotes, if not the great photographs alone, make this book a must buy for anyone who uses makeup regularly or sporadically. It's so rewarding that you won't be disappointed.

I recommend buying Beauty: The New Basics by Rona Berg along with this book to complement the makeup knowledge with the best advice on skin care, hair care and beauty products that's available on a printed format.

Kevyn Aucoin is definitely everything his reputation says he is. This book is excellent, informative, and extremely well put together.

The only down side of it is he does not address Asian beauty. He address caucasian, black, and latin, but not asian... so Asians, this will be good if you want to learn about how to work on all the mentioned faces, but your own...not so much. For those asians whose eyes do not pleat (hooded eyes, or non-creased eyes) this book will not help you dress those and rare style of eyes.

His technique is fantastic and I like his commentaries, very down to earth, though his work is outta-this-world amazing.

I bought this book because I don't have a lot of prowess with makeup at all, and I wanted to develop some skills using basic tools. This book, filled with beautiful pictures of beautiful people, assumes a basic knowledge of makeup and a steady hand for application. Maybe eventually I'll make more use of it, when I master the simple steps from other sources of information.

I found this book to be very helpful to my bridge play. I learned to play bridge a year ago and, whilst I thought I understood the principles of planning the play when Dummy comes down, this book helped me to see the gaps In my knowledge. Mr Kantar's way of explaining the key points is easy to understand and done with a sense of humour. Great book!

The Relaxation and Stress Reduction Workbook (New Harbinger Self-Help Workbook)

The Relaxation and Stress Reduction WorkbookSure we're all stressed a little now and then, but when the stress REALLY starts to build up and becomes too much, consider this little helper. An oversized volume (making it much easier to read), this book contains not one, but MANY different ways of reducing your stressthat's why its called a workbook. And this is precisely what makes this book such a gemthere's virtually something in it for everyone. If you don't like one technique, no problem, just go to the next chapter and try another one until you find one that suits you.

A handy book that should help de-stress a lot of people, I give it 5 stars easy. Can also recommend The Sixty-Second Motivator for readers who have trouble getting motivated to do healthy things regularlylike practice relaxation techniques!

I'm a psychologist working in a college counseling center, and this is one of the top self-help books which I recommend to my clients. It's appropriate for anyone looking to find ways to reduce the amount of anxiety and stress they feel. Strategies address all areas of anxiety, including physical tension, worry, and interpersonal issues. Each chapter details a specific anxiety reduction strategy--eg, diaphragmatic breathing, self-hypnosis, thought stopping--and at the start of the book, there is a self quiz to help determine which chapters would best meet your individual needs. This is one of the best, simpliest books avaiable for reducing anxiety and stress; it's also useful for a wide variety of related problems such as depression and difficulties sleeping. Highly recommended!

Buy The Relaxation and Stress Reduction Workbook (New Harbinger Self-Help Workbook) Now

I must have bought countless books on relaxation and meditation in order to relieve stress. For the most part I found non-objective, very subjective eastern treatises pushing a philosophy or dogma. These books were not very well structured in explaining how to use the techniques. This book, approaches relaxation methods in a scientific manner. Each chapter is about one method, telling what type of attitude works best in its use, the variations of the method (based on effect) and the time that is necessary to see the effects. The methods are explained in a "cookbook" manner. The steps of the methods are clear and explained well. These methods are treated as templates for anybody to use, without implying inferences as to what philosophy of life is correct. I don't think I have ever recommended a book before (heuristic: 90% of all books say the same thing), but since this one follows such a well defined format, I will. Enjoy.

I am a therapist and regularly recommend this book. I like the variety of techniques it offers, as one technique may work for once client and not for another. It also has a chapter on dealing with chronic worrying, and an excellent, educational first chapter on stress and anxiety and how it affects us physically, emotionally, etc. My clients love this book. One recently told me it was like having her therapist "right there, all the time". They have sought experts in the various fields and of numerous techniques and theoretical orientations, which leave a nice balance of information from which to choose, use, practice, and get help.
