How to Open & Operate a Financially Successful Personal Training Business: With Companion CD-ROM

How to Open & Operate a Financially Successful Personal Training Business: With Companion CD-ROMI think this book covered every single aspect of starting a personal training business. I liked that its started off with what makes a successful personal trainer on an individual basis before jumping into how to start and operate a successful business. It even gave examples of dialogue between trainer and clients. I think anyone who reads this book will pick up a few tips on how to improve themselves as a trainer, making this a good book to read even if you don't end up running your own business.

Another thing that I like about this book is that it's a great resource for institutions where once can gain certification in a variety of fitness areas. I also liked that it gives realistic marketing ideas like creating published advertisements and even blogging.

If you are considering starting a personal training business, this book is a great place to start.

For anyone who has ever dreamed of self-employment in the fitness arena, this book is for you.

In an easy-to-read format, How to Open & Operate a Financially Successful Personal Training Business guides the reader through a process of self reflection to determine if you have what it takes to realize the dream of operating a personal training business. The book not only speaks to what skills are required from a fitness perspective, it also offers a look at the type of business savvy required to drive such a business.

In a detailed layout, well-planned chapters educate the reader as to what types of business models can be considered when opening a personal training business. It also offers the reader guidance in developing a strategic business plan and marketing plan both necessary for any successful business.

If I were considering self-employment in the field of fitness, this is certainly one book I would rely on every step of the way, from initial planning and business basics to overcoming hurdles and evaluating success.

NOT worth it, unless you have NO business sense!

This book is the most basic of basics. Unless you have NEVER ran a business and have NO business sense, it is NOT worth buying.

Virtually ALL the info in this book, you will know IF you have ever ran a business.

If you do NOT have any background, you can get this information at any business site, e.g. SBA. or just do Google searches for Projected balance sheets, etc. etc.

The inf on the CD-ROM you will most likely have if you have been a trainer for any length of time Training Logs and the like.

On one of the Excel spread sheets that are on the CD, it has HANDKERCHIEFS as one of the items. Obviously, the author got this off the internet somewhere himself.

I bought the book because the founder of PEAK SCIENCE gave the forward hum!

John Peragine reveals every aspect of the personal training industry in How to Open and Operate a Financially Successful Personal Training Business. This book takes on the huge task of being the "go-to" guide for the workout hobbyist seeking to turn a hobby into a career as well as the personal training professional interested in beginning his or her own physical fitness empire.

This text clearly explains every step in the process; however, the order in which the reader should complete the steps is not as clear creating some repetition. Topics include business administration, professional certification, business plan development, business taxes and personal training ethics. This book also supplies useful worksheets, case studies, links and tips giving the reader an accurate picture of the requirement for success not only as a business owner but also as a personal trainer throughout the business lifecycle.

While the discussion of business plans seemed to come too early in the text, making for a hefty first chapter, Peragine provides a thorough reference manual that carefully details what is necessary to build a successful personal training business.

I am really enjoyingthis book and am almost done with it. I am able to use most of the information in my venture to start my own business. It clarifies some of the aspects of bookkeeping, accounting, types of enterprises, management, marketing, surveying, planning, and counseling as related to a new business. However, I assumed that anyone who wanted to open a training company would already know something about being certified and wouls have had experience in the field. I skipped a couple of chapters because it addresses VERY basic topics, such as deciding whether training is right for you, and how to obtain a certification and experience. I have been working in the field long enough to know the industry, and although I know that not everyone has had experience, I think most people who are comfortable enough to start their own venture probably have a grasp on the experience they need. The rest of the book, however, is VERY helpful. I have notes on the pages EVERYWHERE, and continue to refer back to it in my planning process. The included CD is also wonderful!

Sex Smart: 501 Reasons to Hold Off on Sex: A Sexuality Resource for Teenagers

Sex Smart: 501 Reasons to Hold Off on Sex: A Sexuality Resource for TeenagersI give "True Love Waits" presentations around the country and SexSmart, by Susan Browning Pogany is the sole book I recommend to all teenagers and parents. It is the most accurate and readable abstinence resource I have ever encountered. IF I WERE MADE OF MONEY, THIS BOOK WOULD BE IN THE HANDS OF EVERY TEENAGER IN AMERICA!! Please get it for those you love.

Thank you, Susan!

I LOVE this book. My husband and I are the parents of two teen-aged girls, and we need all the help we can get. We are fighting an uphill battle (in this day of glorification of sex everywhere you look) to protect our daughters from taking unhealthy risks, before they are old enough and mature enough to make good decisions for themselves. It is hard to find resources to support our point of view (that waiting is important) which are readable and interesting for teenagers without being too religious. I'm not against a religious point of view that opposes premarital sex, but there are a lot of books out there that also take a strong stand against homosexuality and masturbation. Well, those books are going to lose most of their teenaged readers right there, and many of their parents as well! I bought and skimmed through three of those, but did not let my children see them, although we are Protestant.

I don't think that this book is going to bother most parents who do believe strongly in a religious point of view. The only people who are likely to be bothered by this book are people who don't think it matters if kids become sexually active at 14, 15, 16, and have multiple partners, or whatever!

Another book I like is "Hooked; New Science on How Casual Sex is Affecting Our Children," by two obstetricians/gynecologists (Dr. McIlhaney and Dr. Bush), available through The Medical Institute for Sexual Health (can find their site easily online), about the effects of sexual behavior on the brain. It also strongly recommends abstinence until a lifetime commitment is made, and is based on scientific research. This book is more for parents, I think, but still very readable, and with quotes from teens.

I would like the school nurses' offices, school counsellors' offices, pediatricians, and churches to keep copies of SexSmart for teenagers to read. We need to create a culture that is healthier for our children!

Buy Sex Smart: 501 Reasons to Hold Off on Sex: A Sexuality Resource for Teenagers Now

I've been looking for resources for my teen-aged daughters on this subject. I ordered four books from Amazon, all with a message of promoting sexual abstinence during the teen years, and this one is great. The other three will get thrown in the trash, now that I have skimmed through them. The others have some good points, but a lot of stuff I can't agree with. This one, in my opinion, even though it is from 1998, is full of facts and good sense.

It is listed currently through an outside seller on Amazon at over $50.00 in paperback, but I just bought it in new condition from Amazon and paid $10.17 for it. The cover lists the price as $14.95. I'm not sure why; maybe it is out of print. Maybe it is available from the library. It is worth getting and reading!

If you are looking for resources for your kids that are not "preachy" or guilt-laden, but that adequately discourage sexual activity in high school, this is a great resource. I wish I had found it sooner, and think it should be available or recommended in school counsellors' offices, school health offices, pediatrics offices, public health clinics, etc. Some churches and religious organizations might have the view that this book doesn't go quite far enough, but those more fundamentalist organizations have their own books and materials, which do not appeal to me, and would likely not appeal to my kids or most kids. This is actually a interesting book that is very readable and practical.

This book is EXCELLENT! I bought it for my 15 year old son. I wish I had this book as a teen.

Want Sex Smart: 501 Reasons to Hold Off on Sex: A Sexuality Resource for Teenagers Discount?

Poorly written, very poorly structured. Conflicting statements on or near the same pages. The whole book can be summed up by "don't have sex" (which is what the book's about)but it is of little realistic value to helping to build any relationship. Lots of references to scientific studies giving various percentages of bad opinons/ memories about sex. Plenty of boy-bashing...I think there was actually blood on one of the pages! Most of the problems she presented could be helped or solved with communication which she has dedicated little of her book to and not surprisingly, it is only on "how to say no". I doubt I will finish this book.

Natural Soapmaking

Natural SoapmakingFor the person who wishes to start making his or her own soap, this method of soapmkaing will be easiest (no lye involved!). Marie Browning's method is to purchase a "basic" bar of soap, melt it down, then add in your own ingredients to personalize the soap. I love the idea of personalizing soaps; however, I found that locating a natural, "basic" soap was impossible. Virtually every brand has fragrance and additives that will effect the result of your soap (i.e., if you use a bar of Ivory soap, a thousand drops of aromatic essential oils won't disguise the Ivory soap scent). Browning does not make any brand suggestions of "basic" soaps, but I suggest to try an organic food store. Browning's molding method is questionnable as well: the soap does not release from its mold by simply dousing the mold with Vaseline. I enjoyed the additional information, such as how to make bath salts, facial cleansers and how to package your products. Those tips are creative and fun. If you are frightened of dealing with lye and want a simple, quick method of soapmaking, this book will be enjoyable for you. Tip: purchase an encyclopedia of cosmetic ingredients. It will aid you in selecting quality ingredients to use in your soaps, because this information is not provided in Browning's book. Lastly, don't expect your soaps to look as beautiful as Browning's until you've truly got the hang of it. Once you've mastered this method you can advance to making your own soaps from scratch!

I'm rather disturbed by a few negative and sometimes vitriolic reviews of this book. To be sure, this book does not teach soapmaking from scratch. However, several reviewers displayed their snobbery about "true" soapmaking in such a way that might cause others to avoid buying this book.

For those of us who work 8+ hours each weekday, then dash around taking care of family, errands, appointments, chores, and all other activities associated with a hectic life, this book is a dream.

It is well written, does NOT promote any particular brand of soap (contrary to some review comments), provides excellent step-by-step instructions, and presents many ideas and encouraging suggestions beyond making just bars of soap.

I ordered four other books at the same time I purchased this one. I've read them all, cover to cover. They each have their strengths and weaknesses. Three discuss making soap from scratch -and one of those also discusses hand-milling the resultant batches -while the other two (this one included) discuss hand-milling. Some contain technical information in depth, some talk about other more aesthetic aspects of soapmaking. Taken as a whole, the several books give a more complete picture of what can be done in the world of soap than any one book can possibly accomplish.

Just as it is no less my handwork when I use a pattern for cross-stitch that someone else designed, so too hand-milling pre-made batches of soap enables me to fit this enticing activity into my life.

I will someday find the time to create soap from scratch. Until then, I certainly will not deny myself the pleasure of making lovely soaps I've created in my own home using the ideas in this book.

I found this book to be exactly what I wanted. I'm a working wife who dabbles in many crafts and hobbies. I wanted to try my hand at crafting a few bars of soap without all the fuss needed for lye soaps. I grated castille soap to make mine and I was very pleased with the results. I made the Pet Soap and it works well on my Westie. I disagree with other reviews below. I purposely bought this book because it tells you up front that it is not a "from scratch" recipe book. I was not mislead into thinking I was making true (from lye) soap. The pictures were well done and the instructions are clear. I found most ingredients available in a local store dealing in all natural products. I still purchase handmade soaps from true soapmakers...but it's also fun to make these soaps for my family and friends.

I like this book, but instead of being a soapmaking book, it should be called a soapcrafting book. To use this book, one needs to already have a base soap to re-mill(rebatch) into the crafted soaps included in this book. The recipes are easy to follow, and once you have perfected the process of re-milling, the end products will make a nice expansion to any soap line of products.

Even though this book is entitled "Natural Soapmaking" it really refers using items such as herbs, etc in your soaps and not to the cold process you would doing when making soaps with lye (which can take a month to cure). These are easy receipes for someone just starting out and want to learn creative ways make soaps which gives you immediate results. It gives good instructions and information about aromatherapy, what different colors mean and what certain herbs to enhance your soaps. Although, she recommends putting Vaseline in the molds to assist with the releasing of the mold you really do not need to do that! As long as you wait for the soap to harden completely that step is unnecessary! And for the cold process/lye makers you may want to pass on this one because you may be disappointed! It is a great addition to your Melt and Pour Soapmaking by the same author!

Earthly Bodies & Heavenly Hair: Natural and Healthy Bodycare for Every Body

Earthly Bodies & Heavenly Hair: Natural and Healthy Bodycare for Every BodyThis book is AWESOME! It is one of the better books I've read on the subject of natural skin/hair/body care with homemade products.

It's very informative, very well organized according to sections (Face Care, Body Care, Mouth Care, Hair Care, Healing Salves and Balms)with special attention given to men, women and different life stages. It's very thorogh.

Dina Falconi provides countless recipes for creams, oils, balms and lotions as well as what those products can do for you and for whom they're most useful (i.e. mature/dry skin etc.)

Not only are recipes provided, but basic recipes for salves and creams are also provided so you can incorporate oils, butters and waxes that you particularly like. Say you don't want to make a beeswax and canola oil based lip balm (which is one of the recipes) you can flip to the back of the book and learn the proper oil/wax proportions for balms and you can try something else instead.

Falconi also explains the benefits of certain essential oils, herbs, butters and oils which is also very beneficial to those just beginning to make personal care products.

A great book!

Like one of the other reviewers, I have suffered for years from eczema. Reading that the other reviewer's eczema improved after consistent use of the recipes in the book, I decided to purchase it. What a huge improvement! My hands used to get literally raw looking...so ugly it was embarrassing. After only six weeks or so, I have only a small patch of eczema left on one of my fingers but it, too, seems to be improving. Furthermore, this is at the time of year when my hands would normally be worse because I'm an avid gardener and gardening irritates the eczema. I have tried many different kinds of beauty products over the years, but they must have had some common ingredients to which I am sensitive. I can't say how grateful I am for this book!

I've only tried a couple of things from this book but they're terrific. I had been looking for recipes for hand lotion and tis has all sorts. There's not much in here regarding aromatherapy concepts instead its a book full of recipes and concoctions. Looking forward to trying out the foot cream recipes. I also bought The Essential Oils Book to compliment this one.

I have struggled with eczema my whole life and just in the last year turned to herbal remedies to help. This book has been unbelievably helpful. Within weeks after using the recipies in this book to make my own natural lotions, shampoos, bath soaks, and cleansers, my eczema (which was at it's worst in many years) began clearing up. After a couple of months, it was almost completely under control. I never realized the extent to which the chemicals in commercial products aggravated my skin.

Not only has my skin cleared, but I love the relaxing bath soaks! I feel like a new person after soaking for a while with one of Dina Falconi's recipes. I'm also using the knowledge I've gained from this book to create my own customized versions of her recipes. I give this book my highest recommendation. Out of all the books I have purchased, this one is the absolute best!

I own a good number of homemade cosmetics books and many of them list some recipes that have some not-so-natural ingredients, like mineral oil and emulsifing wax. What I like in this book are the truly pure recipes and the amazing variety of them , respecting your age and your needs. And most of the ingredients are very easy to find in the health food store or over the internet. The design remember me of a antique herbal book.It is a very complete book, embracing the arts of herbalism, aromatherapy, natural healing, etc. A must have !!!

Woman's Comfort Book: A Self-Nurturing Guide for Restoring Balance in Your Life

Woman's Comfort Book: A Self-Nurturing Guide for Restoring Balance in Your LifeI must have given this book half a dozen times as a gift to friends or family members who were in need of a little nurturing, or who needed an excuse to spend a little more time on themselves. This book has dozens of ideas for activities to help you through a day, and even a little categorized index to look for a project based on how you're feeling at the moment.

A real treasure! Give it to a loved one by itself, or in combination with a nice journal or blank book and a couple of fun pens (I recommend purple), and she will know you care about her. Better yet, buy one for yourself.

This book is a keeper for me and my clients. It's another valuable resource for women. Learning how to better nuture yourself is never a waste of time, and this book is a great tool to help guide you along.

So often women are either cast in the role of care-giver, or place ourselves in that role; often we either feel guilty taking the time to care for ourselves the way we do our families and friends, or somehow perhaps think we don't deserve it.

This simple to use guide helps us first to focus on how we are feeling, getting in touch with what we need. A simple directory of 'situations' gives page numbers for suggested activities.

The activities range from the sublime to the ridiculous, but don't laugh at any of them until you have tried them. Just leafing through the book without even doing any of the suggestions seems to help me destress; just the reminder that I can do things to nourish my body and spirit is a wonderful revitalizer.

I have given away close to a dozen copies of this book to friends who are used to putting themselves and their needs last on the list of priorities. I can not praise it highly enough for women who can not find time, energy, or inclination to give to themselves the care and love that they give those around them.

Beauty Pearls for Chemo Girls

Beauty Pearls for Chemo GirlsMany of our bodies just can't stand up to the environmental toxins, chemical additives, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and genetic modifications in the food and water supply these days. So lots and lots of us are getting cancer, which is good for Big Pharma profits but very bad for us! As the American Health Care landscape changes, alternative solutions, including Insulin Potentiation Therapy, which utilizes 1/10 the amount of chemo medicine much more effectively, will hopefully be encouraged and covered by insurance, but for now, we are stuck with the status quo solutions that mainstream Doctors endorse and our insurance will cover, which usually means chemotherapy in large doses. Hopefully we will look back, 10 years from now, and realize how barbaric chemotherapy really is, at least the way it is administered today, but it's what we've got to deal with, and our positive attitude toward our own healing protocol is key.

"Beauty Pearls for Chemo Girls" is a precious gift of the heart to women everywhere. Authors Marybeth Maida and Debbie Kiederer have rallied together a powerful group consciousness for us to plug into, with a network of support from celebrities, beauty, fashion, health, psychological and spiritual experts as well as other women facing this extreme challenge, and those who have emerged triumphant and whole from the ordeal. Imparting pearls of wisdom is what this book is all about, and it addresses this journey of healing in such a comprehensive way, that pretty much every aspect of what we could possibly face is covered with excellent recommendations.

I recently gave a speech on alternative cancer cures at a University and when I asked these young people how many of them knew someone who had been affected by cancer, every hand went up. If we have not personally been affected, we know someone who has and we can be of great help to them by gifting them this book, imparting our own pearls of wisdom as gleaned from this book, or at least applying this knowledge to know how to be of the greatest assistance to them.

Betsey Johnson is my favorite Designer and her first hand experience with cancer allowed her to write the perfect forward to the book; "It's so obvious to me that the way a woman looks while she's going through chemo is going to affect the way she feels...commit to giving yourself all the comfort and kindness you can manage." I'm wearing a Betsey Johnson dress at this very moment and have dozens more in my closet, so her name alone would have drawn me to this book, but then what a wealth of treasure I discovered there!

From Betsey, we launch into a journey, with our first consideration being the "Mane Event", where we learn about hair loss, hair restoration, the choosing of wigs and other ways of covering our heads if we so choose to. Personally, the monk`s cleanly shaved head has always appealed to me with bright colored hats when it is cold, but everyone is different. We then visit the world of skin care and makeup, then on to fashion. We learn expert techniques of taking care of our bodies, covering every possible physical issue in light of chemo`s side effects. We learn how to effectively assemble our health care team and set up our daily routine for optimal health, which includes our diet, massage and other therapies and solutions for issues of hormonal balance, which is so important because so many women are plunged into menopause abruptly during this process.

My favorite chapter is entitled, The Integrative Approach, which addresses alternative and integrative medicine questions. I found this chapter to be conservatively aligned in conjunction with standard medicine, but this is the reality of the route most will choose. Having enough guts and money to follow a purely alternative path is a huge challenge in itself, that few are well equipped enough to follow through with and survive. In the final chapter, we are encouraged to embrace our own spirituality at this very spiritual time where many important resolutions and transformations occur. This may also necessitate the contemplation of our own final transition (at least this time around). Some spiritual seers have pointed out that we are all in the process of dieing, either now or later and that using death as an Advisor is a spiritually healthy practice for anyone. Those of us who are said goodbye to are also well served by these particular pearls of wisdom.

I especially appreciated being able to understand how to help a person facing this challenge. Since I read this book, a dear friend of mine, who lives close by, found herself in the position of needing this kind of support, and I was able to sincerely offer it in a very constructive way; "Assign me a job, and I really mean it!" All our mutual friends did the same thing and her burdens from everyday responsibilities have been lightened, she is well accompanied to her treatments and attended afterwards, her house is clean, groceries in the fridge and healthy food is prepared for her when she needs it most, allowing her to focus more on getting well. It has been fun and rewarding for us too and it was this book that helped us understand how best to do that. Thanks Debbie and my dearest Marybeth!

ohmygosh, this book is AMAZING! Having gone through cancer myself, I picked this book up and could not believe all the authors have covered: hair, skin, fashion, dealing with doctors, taking care of yourself, your family, your mind, your soul; even the embarrassing girl things like infections and not feeling desirable are all dealt with very sensitively and without any sort of cuteness. They lay out what might happen and then tell you how to deal with it and I for one am very grateful to have this to give to my friend now that she's facing the cancer battle. What a great resource! If you're sick, buy it and if you know someone who is, get it for her -BEAUTY PEARLS IS DA BOMB!!!

This book is a perfect example of one woman taking her own cancer experience and turning it into something incredibly positive for those who have or will soon walk in those same "cancer" shoes. I would imagine that everyone can close their eyes and think of at least one person going through cancer treatment or one person whose life has been touched by someone fighting the good fight. What a perfect gift to give them! This book is encouraging, inspirational and fool of great information for women who embark on this journey. It lets "Chemo Girls' know: "You are not alone!" I recommend this book for anyone and everyone who has been touched by cancer. Thank you to the authors for pouring their heart and soul into the pages!

When my sister first was diagnosed with cancer, I bought her a book beacuse I felt so helpless, but the book didn't address any of her real concerns. How I wish this book was in print at that time!

Beauty Pearls for Chemo Girls is a very practical and helpful guide to almost anything a woman has a difficult time with during chemo: how to pick out the best wig, how to tastefully hide the fact that your eyebrows and eyelashes are gone, foods that might sit better in your stomach during chemo...THIS book has it all. There's even a section that deals with spirituality. I LOVE that the author discusses her own experiences, but the book's focus isn't on herself. The focus is on all of the FANTASTIC, famous contributors in every field and their expert advice: Oribe, Oscar Blandi, etc..., all providing very useful and practical information. I LOVED this book and believe it will truly assist many women out there going through one of the worst times in their lives! Kudos to the authors for doing such a splendid job!
