SEAL Survival Guide: A Navy SEAL's Secrets to Surviving Any Disaster

SEAL Survival Guide: A Navy SEAL's Secrets to Surviving Any DisasterDashing ex-Navy Seal Cade Courtley , star of Spike TV's just-launched "Surviving Disaster" show, comes out with his own survival guide. He's the real deal, but there's not much new in the book, if you have read Robert Peltons guides and also Cody Lundin, etc. However, it's still good stuff, and if you don't have one of these real life disaster books, this may be the book for you.

A quote from the author:

"After making it through Seal training and the stuff I did as a Seal, I guess you start to feel like you can make it through anything. When you have that kind of a mindset, there's a certain confidence that goes along with that. The confidence is really helpful when all hell breaks loose," he notes. "We try to teach people, `Yeah, that just happened. Take a breath. Let's get that brain working and we can problem solve our way through this.' It's nothing too advanced where you'd need 20 years experience of hand-to-hand combat."

Entertaining, and perhaps life-saving.

SEAL Survival Guide: A Navy SEAL's Secrets to Surviving Any Disaster is the Go-To-Guidebook for surviving any disaster. Coutley has an impressive background as a Navy SEAL, and has done a great job at providng the right kinds of information. The book is comprehensive, has easy to understand illustrations, and is full of critical information. Every person in America should read this book to develop the right mindset advantage in any emergency. Knowing what to do in a cris is half the battle. I heartily recommend this book.

1)If you put out a survival guide for your fellow countrymen --and if you trade on the name of the Seals --then you owe it to your readers to take the topic seriously. No one should expect Mr Courtley to provide classified info --but his shallow book leaves out much well known, unclassified info.

2) Example 1: Detecting surveillance (p. 280). Courtley says travel around several city blocks in a box (4 right turns.) Which does nothing but tip off the people following you that you are alert and tells them to take greater measures. Courtley says nothing about the fact that his method is easily beaten by a crew of three swapping positions. Or that even your wife can order a GPS cellphone beacon off the internet, hide it in your car and watch you remotely on her laptop -laughing as you do Courtley's stupid box turns before you head to meet your new girlfriend at the motel. Courtley says nothing about the basic technique -having a friend watch from several hidden locations (e.g, office window 5 stories up) as you walk through a series of cut-throughs -an opening in a wall-type barrier that forces a surveillance bubble to close up and go through the same opening in order to follow you. There are a number of counter-surveillance manuals on Amazon that will reveal the shortcomings of this section in Courtley's book.

3) Example 2: Firearms (p.299) In his list of things to do on p 299, Courtley doesn't mention the importance of knowing the law and how you can easily lose your life savings to civil suits if you step wrong. Nor does he mention the possibly of your armed opponent wearing concealed body armor and the need to immediately execute the Failure to Stop drill aka Mozambique drill and the corresponding demand for a high capacity magazine. He does punt and suggest you contact IPSC for actual info on using a gun -although IDPA would be a better source.

4) Example 3: "Survival Float" p. 216. Courtley briefly describes how to keep from drowning if you have to abandon ship at sea.

He should have noted that his "survival float" is widely known as "Drownproofing" , that learning the technique requires hours of training in advance, that such training is provided by the Red Cross and many swim clubs and that the technique has limited utility outside tropical waters because it accelerates hypothermia. Courtley does warn of the dangers of being even on large ships at sea and the need to know where life jackets and vests are located. But he should have noted the need for extensive training if you go out on smaller boats -such as is provided by the American Sailing Association -and the dangers of a sailboat hitting

a floating shipping container at night while traveling at top speed.

5) As a general criticism, Courtley should have done more to explain the high risk and danger in the areas he discusses, the need to avoid them and and the need to TRAIN IN ADVANCE/PREPARE IN ADVANCE if one can not avoid them. Strange because he emphasizes early on how a Seal must train for almost 3 years before being qualified for combat -and the need for advanced planning before

embarking into a dangerous situation.

6) Example 4: Improvised Weapons (p. 301) Courtley does not mention the deadliness of a 3.5 inch pocketknife --legal to carry

in many places where guns are banned -or the correct way to grip a knife, correct ways to use a knife, location of arteries, etc. Again, Amazon has several books on the subject of knifefighting.

7) Example 5: Nuclear Attack (p.245) Again, Courtley talks about what to do if a nuclear bomb unexpectedly goes off nearby --

but nothing about preparing in advance. Like knowing where the likely targets are and avoiding them. Like knowing where the deep shelters are and how to get to them. Courtley does not mention the flash bang technique of counting the time delay between the bright flash of light and the arrival of the blast wave (which can take up to 75 seconds to arrive if you are 15 miles away from ground zero) in order to determine the DISTANCE to the nudet. Which is ESSENTIAL in judging if the wind speed will give you time to run parallel to the oncoming fallout cloud to avoid it, as Courtley recommends. Courtley also does not mention the case in which you are UPWIND of the nudet --in which case you need to run directly AWAY from the nudet if you are within range of the fallout deposit. Nor does Courtley note the need to measure the width (degrees) of the fallout cloud 5 minutes after detonation to determine the yield--which in turn will tell you have many miles upwind of the blast you need to be to escape fallout. Nor does Courtley note how to evaluate the mushroom cloud to determine if the nuclear bomb was an air strike (likely

in many cases because of the greater damage) in which case fallout would not be generated/not a concern. Nor does Courtley note

the danger of firestorm and the need to excape from the area where it can erupt because a firestorm will incinderate even people in deep shelters.

Army manuals like 3-11.4 have detailed information/procedures but Courtley doesn't even mention them or refer readers to them even though they are unclassified and available online.

Courtley also does not mention the value of having one or two folded up oven bags in your wallet that you can fill with water so that you don't die of thirst if you have to stay in shelter for two weeks. Or the value of having a cell phone set up to receive text alerts warning 20 minutes in advance that an attack is coming or has already hit other locations. Or the value in having a small transistor AM/weather radio so that you can receive broadcasts telling you when it is safe to come out.

Caring for the Diabetic Soul

Caring for the Diabetic SoulPeople with diabetes so often have to read and absorb dense information about their condition. This book, though, does not make those kinds of intense demands on the reader. It consists of a series of brief articles dealing with ways to support yourself or your child through stresses associated with diabetes.

Chapters include topics such as surviving the preteens, beating stress and dealing with negative thoughts. Each chapter is written by a different author.

I see this as a book you can keep in the bathroom, by the bed or in the car. One day you might want to spend five minutes reading about how to develop an exercise program. Another time, you might read about dealing with perfectionistic tendencies. Read the chapters in any order as you need them.

I must say I had higher expectations with this book. When I bought it I was -so to speakgoing under the ups and downs of the first few weeks after being diagnosed with Type 2, and upon reading comments and reviews I decided this book could help me through some of it.Well, it did in a sense, but after the first few chapters, it becomes incredibly repetitive and, at times, even contradictory. The problem is that it's all made of essays, all of which are written by different people. This results in a true mix that more than once brings back concepts that already have been discussed, more precisely perhaps, the anger that a diabetic experiences and how to deal with it. By the fourth time I read about this, I was almost angry to find the topic discussed again! :) (not so much, but you get the point). Otherwise, it has some great advice. I would say it's best for someone who's on his or her first few days after diagnosis or someone who -regardlesscontinues to be on an emotional rollercoaster due to diabetes, or for parents of diabetic children. Not really the best resource for spouses of diabetics.

The Athlete's Book of Home Remedies: 1,001 Doctor-Approved Health Fixes and Injury-Prevention Secret

The Athlete's Book of Home Remedies: 1,001 Doctor-Approved Health Fixes and Injury-Prevention Secrets for a Leaner, Fitter, More Athletic Body!Just got this book in the mail today. First thing I'll say is that the quality of this book is excellent. Pages are large, paper it's printed on is not cheap. (For this book I wouldn't recommend the Kindle version since it's something you'll reference while working out and/or healing. Plus, the graphics are outstanding.) It's well organized with a large section devoted to injuries types, and how to prevent them and/or resolve them. (About 60%) Graphics of muscles/bones is very detailed. The rest of the book has excellent workout programs with nicely detailed graphics and how-to instructions.

I'm a runner and I will get much use of this book. But you don't have to be a runner as it's designed for all types of athletes. (Both beginner and advanced) Highly recommended!

I got this book last week and I've already referred to it twice. It's extremely comprehensive, yet perfectly accessible and easy to navigate. Having used the Internet as my source before, I value having all of this information in one reputable source and appreciate that it comes from the viewpoint of an expert who really understands the mentality of an athlete. As a new runner, it's a comfort knowing that this book is on my shelves.

I admit, I am a bit biased because Dr. Metzl is my orthopedist! But the book is truly wonderful. It is well-written, filled with valuable advice and contains several excellent regimes, with really helpful graphics. It is not just for athletes it is helpful for anyone looking to take care of their body. The advice is particularly good for individuals who love to work out, whether or not they are participating in a sport. Dr. Metzl made me healthy and strong after several painful ski accidents and various other exercise-related injuries. His book is almost as good as seeing him in person (I say almost because he is quite adorable so in person is better!)

This book covers a lot of ground, and provides many "hopefully" good ideas for curing numerous injuries. I have however a few reservations.

Dr. Metzl claims to have 20,000 patients. Let's do the plain arithmetic here. Let's say he sees 40 patients a week and works 50 weeks a year. That's 2,000 patients a year. At this workaholic pace, it takes him a full decade with little vacation to see each of his patients just once! Good luck if you need two or three follow up sessions. Meanwhile he still has time to train tens of hours a week to do Ironman triathlons in Hawaii and elsewhere. Something does not add up here.

Per the back cover of the book, he claims to be "one of the nation's leading sports medicine physicians." I did a quick search for him on the Internet and did not find a whole lot. However, a doctor rating website gave him only a 2 star rating out of 5, as given by nearly 20 different patients. And, the same site recommended several other sports medicine doctors all with 5 star ratings. This did not make him look like "one of the nation's leading sports medicine physicians."

His approach is interesting, but it may not be for everybody.

His dynamic stretching techniques are associated with vigorous bouncing while carrying heavy weights that will put much pressure on all your joints. If you are a 28-year-old triathlete, this approach may be fine. If you are a 50-year-old weekend athlete, this may be a recipe to injure yourself before you have the opportunity to injure yourself doing the sports you like.

He is really big on hard rolls. That's where you roll the side of your body on some really hard foam cylinder. You have to try it to understand what it is like. I have and I found it nearly excruciating with unclear benefits. Maybe it is reasonably more comfortable and rewarding for others.

He also is big on going nearly full out every single day. That seems excessive at least for the middle age weekend athlete type. There is a confusion between a daily active lifestyle that may include mellow days of just walking, hiking, gardening interlaced with more vigorous sports days vs his daily full out style. For middle age people the former lifestyle may be more sustainable and injury free than the latter.

His decision-making is sometimes typical of the Spartan macho archetype. He goes on advising that you should listen to your body and not incur excessive competitive sports stress when you have an injury. Then he goes on sharing that he also had such a crucial decision to make as he had a disabling injury just before doing an Ironman. It seemed a slam-dunk decision that he should not have participated in such a stressful event with such an impairing injury. Then, he goes on telling you that he decided to do it anyway and finish the event in 12 hours, a remarkably good time for someone at any age when you understand what such event consist off. From a medical standpoint it seemed like a stupid thing to do risking permanent damage to his body.

Besides all that, this book may be fine.

This book is great. Its like an owners manual for your body. It simplifies concepts in how your body works and how to think about preparing it for peak condition. Anyone starting out in exercise should be handed this book. And for those already engaged in fitness, it's a great way to re-focus and make sure you're taking care of yourself the right way.

Thanks Dr. Metzl.

This is one of the best written fitness books out there (and I've read a ton of 'em). Fenton covers topics from how to start a beginning walking program to competetive speed walking, and everything in between. It's well written and presented and is actually fun to read. More importantly, you'll learn it's fun to walk for fitness. A great start for beginners, but also a good motivator for seasoned exercisers.

Help Me To Heal

Help Me To HealBernie Siegel and Yosaif August have based their book on three main principles:

1. You have the right to heal, no matter what your life experience has been.

2. You can create a healing team.

3. You can learn to become the master of your life's time.

This book is divided into three main sections:

Part I: A Patient's Survival Guide This section explains how you can form a healing team, protect yourself in a variety of ways (including making sure the people caring for you wash their hands) and speaking up about anything you feel might be a mistake. Chapter 3 explains what you need to know to prepare for a hospital stay. I liked the list of healing objects you can take into the hospital to make you feel less stressed. This could range from a favorite quilt to favorite music, photos, healthy snacks and your laptop computer. This section addresses issues like having a private room or sharing a room, dealing with aromas and intrusions.

Part II: Healing Strategies for Family, Friends, and Caregivers This is a section for those who are looking after someone who is healing.

Part III: Healing Ways An interesting section on bedside yoga, breathing exercises, stretching and massage. Instructions are given for helping the healing process with the healing power of touch.

There is an extensive resource section with ideas like "bedscapes" that can be put up on a wall to help patients feel less closed into a room.

Bernie Siegel and Yosaif August have created a beautiful gift for patients and caregivers. I also hope doctors and nurses will read this book so they can observe care from the patient's perspective.

~The Rebecca Review

The coming together of Yosaif August and Bernie Siegel is truly a match made in heaven. If you or a loved one is ill, chances are you will be needing strong, wise and compassionate allies. And you'll find them through the voices of these two wonderful, often hilariously funny, always compassionate and most importantly eminently practical men. If you want to learn how to be militantly on your own side -when doing so could save your life read this book!

Reversing Gum Disease Naturally: A Holistic Home Care Program

Reversing Gum Disease Naturally: A Holistic Home Care ProgramI read The Oral Health Bible before reading this book, so already knew quite a bit about gum disease, its causes, and its potential negative impacts to the entire body.

The author of this book starts off by discussing, at length, how gum disease begins and progresses, why most oral health care products on the market can make the problem worse, and how taking a holistic and natural approach to oral hygiene can help save your teeth and gums. She even suggests finding a dentist or hygienist who will take the time to use natural products during your teeth cleanings.

Not unlike The Oral Health Bible, the author recommends natural products and supplements to help us care for our teeth and body. I take many of the recommended supplements now, and started using all-natural toothpaste and mouthwash and have noticed a dramatic improvement in every aspect of my own oral health.

The take-aways for me after reading this book: how to improve my flossing technique (I had no idea there was a "wrong" way before reading this book), and how to really enjoy the oral care process.

The author touts a home care spa concept which, when put to practice, is really quite a lovely experience. As suggested by the author, morning and night I lay out all of the tools I will use to care for my mouth, and then I turn my bathroom radio on NPR, the classical station or plug my iPod into the stereo. Although my oral care regimen takes longer now than it did before I started reading books on oral care, the process is enjoyable because I see it as a time to do something good for myself at the start and end of every day, and I can listen to the day's events or some good tunes while I do so. ;)

The book is a soft touch to a scary subject. The author's tone is warm an reassuring which is quite nice when you're reading a book on how to save your teeth. For that reason, and for the information on monitoring changes in your mouth in an oral health diary, on creating a home care spa, and the recommendations on natural products and supplements, the book is well worth it.

This is an excellent book written by a very dedicated dental hygienist who does her best to impart her years of acquired wisdom, so that we can take responsibility for our dental health and protect our teeth. The author teaches us that most people lose teeth as they get older, not because of tooth decay, but rather because of gum disease.

She explains what happens and why, and goes on to teach us how to look after our gums, whether they are currently good, or in bad shape. She show us how to set up an at-home hygiene center for looking after our gums.

This book contains lots of very useful information, not just from an understanding viewpoint, but from a practical self treatment viewpoint as well.

Highly recommended for anyone who wants to prevent or treat gum disease.

The book has good tips and info that I found helpful reminders I already knew but needed to be refeshed about them I realized. A few things mentioned in the book I found worthy of pen highlighting. However, from the reviews I thought it to have something very outstanding I or most people wouldn't normally or have never known/heard about. Maybe perhaps too on a deeper level this is what I and many others are looking for...a miracle. Perhaps I have to be a bit realistic as well. I think for others who are totally new might find this book enlightening and helpful guide. Having been familar with Perio process first hand, natural heatlth remedies, and veganism...I didn't find the book all that unique or earth shattering. It is a nice, straightforward, primer/overview of some basic things. It is good too for those new to Perio issues that it offers chapter on what happens with a Perio exam what to expect...and so forth. The book explains also what, how, and why gum disease starts. It has a tooth chart but not very helpfull for me in that I would have appreciated an actual mouth drawing like the lay person is familiar with...even having Perio experience first hand doesn't make me an instant dentist. On earlier pages there is a whole run down as to what tooth relates to what parts of the body. However, there is no reference to the fact that a tooth chart exists later on. In fact, the earlier run down has the number and technical name of each tooth..yet not very helpful to the lay person if there is not a useful visual to refer to that corresponds to the numbers and technical names easily. In other words "Tooth Chart for Dummies". The book offers consistant mention of foods that are good for the health of the gums and so forth. It also makes reference to illness and life changes that may involve gum disease...and again it takes the time to mention foods, supplements that can help. The standard mention of the maintainance of good diet, excercise, and such is in the book.

When a new dentist told me I had gum disease, I was distressed. The dentist wanted to schedule advanced cleaning which seemed unpleasant, expensive, and perhaps unhealthy. For me, it was a last resort.

So I bought this book and implemented many of the suggestions. Now, four months later, after another dentist visit, my gum issues are quite reduced and advanced cleaning is not recommended. The positive, can-do attitude of this book really helped.

Want Reversing Gum Disease Naturally: A Holistic Home Care Program Discount?

I bought this book because I was seeking alternatives to scaling and root planing. The title called "Reversing Gum Disease Naturally" suggests to me that invasive procedures by a dentist would not be necessary. That is the information I was seeking. However on Page 18 she says if you have been diagnosed with pockets of 4mm or deeper, a prerequisite for gum disease, you must get scaling and root planing but that manual cleaning (versus laser) and the use of oil of oregano (a natural antibiotic) is better. She does not really say why laser is not good. Based on the theme of the book, I would guess it is because the gum may not reattach as well? So, I guess it depends what you are looking for and how you read the title. I think the title should be "At Home Care Following Holistic Periodontal Root Planing and Scaling." That would match what this book is. I have no way to judge whether the methods in this book work or not yet. I am pursuing a three month method based on further investigation through google and amazon. I am opting the periogen cleanse with the waterpik first. I will couple that with an oil of oregano rub with a rubber massage instrument. Update following in a few months or sooner.
