The Book of Massage: The Complete Step-by-Step Guide to Eastern and Western Technique

The Book of Massage: The Complete Step-by-Step Guide to Eastern and Western TechniqueI'm not interested in massage professionaly, just for my boyfriend and I to have a way to treat each other. And this was the perfect book for us to learn. It goes over the three main types of massage in a clear precise manner, describes each kind of stroke, the positions the massuesse should be in for each stage of massage, everything! This is a great book for trying at home. It would be a cool if they did it with a spiral bound though so that you could leave it open to a certain page....

As someone who is about to graduate to be a Massage Therapist, I find the techniques in this book to be good, and the massage sequences outlined in the Sweedish Massage quite similar to the sequences I learned in school. The pictures and diagrams are thorough, and the instruction on Shiatsu is good as well.

From a professional perspective, I had some problems with this book though. One big probelm is the book discounts knowledge of anatomy as unnessicary for massage, and I strongly disagree with that. Massage is applied anatomy, and the study of anatomy is essential for anyone who wishes to be a massage therapist, or even a good ameture. Without understanding what it is you are pressing, kneading, rubbing, and tapping you're not going to be able to be very theraputic.

I was dissapointed that the book hardly touched on contraindications(cautions, conditions in which massage can be harmfull) such as cancer, diabeties, AIDS, alcohol consumption and others. Where it does mention contraindications, it's more of a short sidenote than anything.

The book has full nudity in most of the books pictures. While this isn't a bad thing nessicarily, I didn't see any information about draping procedures and protecting client modesty. Also, most of the massage is done on the floor, rather than a massage table and there was little discussion of body mechanics of the therapist. I get the feeling the book was actually meant for 'sensual' couples massage, rather than a guide for someone who is out to become a good massage therapist. In that light, it is a decent book for couples sensual massage.

I wanted a basic book of massage techniques, this is it. I also bought another book with photos that I don't find nearly as good. This one has drawings with helpful diagrams as to direction etc. This book also covers the basics of shiatsu and reflexology but by far the most extensive section is on massage. I learned a lot just from scanning the text and studying the diagrams/drawings. This is a great book and worth the money.

As a fibromyalgia patient, I've found massage to be a great help in managing my disease. When my husband indicated he'd like to learn how to help me through painful moments, I began looking for a book to help teach him the basics. The combination of clear instructions, multiple suggestions for customizing massage experiences, and fantastic illustrations made this a winner (and I checked out about twenty or so different books). For someone who started with movements similar to what you'd use to pet a cat, the techniques absorbed from this book greatly increased not only his skills but his creativity in working knots out of sore muscles. I also found myself suddenly figuring out exactly how mysterious moves (from the client's perspective) were pulled off, such as using forearms or elbows instead of just palms or fingers. A few combinations of area-specific instructions intrigued me, and once suggested to a massage therapist, ended up being just the ticket for sore shoulders.

Althought you can learn incredible things from this book, it's not a substitute for actual training. Even my middle-ground position as having learned from several talented massage therapists and being able to replicate their results on friends and family members do not make me nearly as adept or knowledgeable as the professionals. It's a resource and perhaps a "Layman's Guide," but not nearly enough to open a business on or to claim expert status. It's not at all comprehensive of all the techniques out there, but it's a great place to start.

Although some of the illustrations are not youth-appropriate (I would not give this to a teen curious about massage), they are still handled tastefully and within context most of the time, especially considering when this was published. While my experiences in massage have always included being covered or semi-clothed, I can understand some of the rationale behind the body-baring photographs. Another note is that this book also features aromatherapy and cultural ideas of healing/massage, especially Eastern techniques. The authors don't seem to claim that these beliefs are absolute/completely necessary for massage, they do take them seriously and present them as concepts to consider and potentially include in a massage experience (personally, I don't buy into them).

Overall, if you're wanting a clear, concise guide that goes in-depth on massage techniques without being too complicated for beginners, I highly suggest getting this book.

As a connoisseur of massages and a practitioner I thought to get this book for a friend of mine who is beginning their own massage practice. Although the title promises alot, it really just gives you the following information:

-Basic Western Massage (Basic Body rub techniques)

-Shiatsu

-Reflexology

There are many of other disciplines I would have liked to see covered, but for fundamentals it is a good beginners book. It gives you the basics and some common sense advice on creating an environment and why human touch is so important. The illustrations are easy to understand, and the artist conveys the sensuality of touch very well. If you want an introductory book this is one to get, especially for the novice and beginning masseur/masseuse.

The Beauty of Color: The Ultimate Beauty Guide for Skin of Color

The Beauty of Color: The Ultimate Beauty Guide for Skin of ColorMost beauty books seem to rehash the same ideas or showcase looks that can be created by anyone who is somewhat familiar with makeup. This book is refreshingly different, and how! An immense amount of thought and creativity has gone into putting this book together. Iman and her team have gone into great lengths to portray a wide variety of looks on a broad spectrum of women. The makeup is so artfully done that you could come up with your own ideas by putting together components of several looks.

Another plus about this book is that the author doesn't resort to a common book-bulking tactic used by many cosmetics mavens. Here you don't see layouts of bare-faced (or nearly so) women with inane captions like "look how beautiful she is with only eyeliner". I think many women look to beauty books to give us creative inspiration. If we looked good w/o any goop on our face, we'd know it by now, saved a lot of time and $$$ and not bothered with makeup books. "The Beauty of Color" really delivers the goods. Congratulations to Iman (and team!) for a job well done!

This book is all around wonderful. Not only are the pictures beautiful, but the book is very informative. This book is not only for women of color (African American, Latina, Asian, Indian, etc.), it is for all women. Iman instructs readers on many issues pertaining to makeup application, color palette selection, and skincare. The book instructs the reader on how to obtain certain looks with makeup. For example, she shows readers how to obtain the natural look or the glamour girl look. She even shows readers how to obtain the vampy and ghetto fabulous looks. In addition, she instructs readers on how to select the correct foundation, blush and bronzer colors based on individual skin color. Furthermore, the book also discusses skin care issues. Its instructions on skincare are not one size fits all. It gives care instructions to those with oily, dry, combination, and normal skin. It even includes instructions on how to take care skin with hyperpigmentation.

The book is beautifully illustrated and contains a wealth of information on makeup. Regardless of your age, if you love makeup and want to apply it correctly, buy this book.

I really love this book! It's full of beauty tips that I can really use when applying my makeup or trying out a new look. I especially like the combination of models Iman chose to photograph-from "real-life" people like me to celebrities such as Salma Hayek. Even the book itself is beautiful. I have it sitting on my coffee table for my friends and family to enjoy!

I read a few reviews of this book not having a variety of brown women, so I was hesitant to get it. However, when I opened it up, I was pleasantly surprised that they were wrong. This book is one of the first I've seen with quite a large range of colored women.

This book is about skin color and how to find makeup that goes with warm toned colored skin. It has every shade from the white-looking yet olive skinned blonde, to the very dark African. (At first I too was shocked by the blonde Brazilian, but she is a warm toned, very light skinned person that probably runs into issues since most people with skin that light have a pink tone.) It is true that there is not every single shade of every ethnicity of woman available. But, there cannot possibly be a book that has every shade between white and black for Hispanics, Asians, Middle Easterners, South Asians, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, Africans, and every mix in between. A dark South Asian, for example, will have the same skin color as an African. Plus, it even includes a handful of mixed-race people like Salma Hayek (Mexican and Lebanese), Kimora Lee (Asian and black), Alicia Keys (black and white), Jade Jagger (Nicaraguan and white), Patricia Velasquez (Spanish and Indigenous) a woman who is South American, Guyanese, Indian, and white, and a woman who is Puerto Rican and Thai. So don't say you're not represented, because there is QUITE a variety.

I am a medium-light skinned Indian woman and I am very grateful for this book. Most of the time when I see an Indian mentioned in a book they have dark skin and thick black hair. This is one of the few times I've seen anything that addressed a light olive skin tone (as opposed to light and pink toned or the dark and olive). The tips are easy to understand, so matching the look shouldn't be too difficult. There are no specific shades suggested since there are so many variants and brands. But there are families of color listed for the appropriate skin color (example: light olive should use an apricot or coral colored blush).

The book itself is written well, with a bit of Iman's sense of humor coming through. In fact one of my deciding factors was her description of "The Vamp" look. It perfectly described other women whom I notice my boyfriend check out: "The other woman: cheekbones cut like glass; a curtain of mysterious, silky black bangs hanging over dangerously smoky eyes; cleavage that would smother your boyfriend and your dreams of a princess-cut diamond engagement ring. You immediately loathe her, but you're also dying to ask her what lip-gloss she's wearing..."

Bottom line: don't be put off if your ethnicity is not depicted in your exact shade. You can check out another race with a similar skin color and have a great result. There is of course, some Photoshopping going on (there's no way a giant zit stops being 3D when you put concealer on it, and there's no way any human has skin this smooth). But that is to be expected of any makeup book. There's a lot of helpful tips, and I'd definitely recommend this to anyone with a hint of color.

The Men's Health Gym Bible

The Men's Health Gym BibleThe topics covered in the book are wide ranging and informative but the editing in some parts leave little to be desired. For example, in chapter 13 on the Muscle-Building Workout, the instructions and the actual layout of the workouts don't coincide. The instructions say the leg workouts should be done as straight sets but in workout B, the first two leg exercises are listed as A1 and A2, suggesting a superset. Also, the instructions explained the workouts as upper body/lower body, upper body /lower body but the 1st upper body workout includes the Bulgarian Split Squat and the 2nd upper body workout includes Cable Pull Through, both leg movements. The 2nd upper body workout also has Lateral Raise as part of an arm tri-set. I'm guessing it should've been in the shoulder portion instead, where it shows a superset of Hang Clean and DB Shoulder Press.

Other errors I noted were the illustrations of the various machines. The Seated Calf Raise on page 212 looks an awful lot like a Preacher Curl Machine to me and is that really a 45 degree Leg Press Machine on page 208? On page 282, that doesn't look like a Glute Hame Raise Machine. There are others but you get the idea.

There's a lot of good information in this book but unfortunately, the editing mistakes may leave novice lifters confused about what machines they're actually looking at in their gym and whether they're conducting their exercises in the proper order.

This book has a wealth of information useful to someone who recently joined or is considering joining a gym. The book is well laid out and very easy to read. This book was perfect for me. The exercises are well illustrated. Information is presented concisely. The book is free of one person's opinions. Too much authoritative lecturing is a problem that plagues many books in this category. This book avoids that mistake. I can highly recommend this book to anyone who is considering joining a gym or already belongs to one and wants to maximize the benefits of membership.

This book does a very good job of de-mystifying the gym work out. There are quite a few devices and gizmos that I was never quite sure how to use, and this book explains what they do and how to use them. Also, it does a very good job of categorizing different exercises, providing many ways to work different muscle groups. For instance, chest exercises using no weights, free weights, bars, benches, cages, machines, etc. Having more options at my disposal makes it easier to work out. There are some editing problems, as noted in another review. The most annoying for me was the inconsistency between some of the charts and the written-out explanations for certain routines. Specifically, the muscle-building exercise program in chapter 13 is exactly what I was looking for...except that the chart and the workout expalanation don't match up. They are inconsistent regarding when to superset, the order of the exercises, and duration. I actually went to some online body-building forums to get some ideas on how to best implement the routine. But the bottom line is that the book has been helpful, and has provided me additional motivation to get to the gym and try different things.

I've always viewed "Men's Health" as more of a fashion magazine than a real resource for health and fitness. Their (many) books seem to be no different, focusing on style over substance. "The Men's Health Gym Bible" actually does contain some useful information, but if you've spent any amount of time working out in a gym, it's old hat to you.

A friend of mine was looking to start working out and just wanted some basic info to get him started. He was like most guys and still had the fitness knowledge he learned in high school. Unfortunately this book was too basic for even him. The limited info on any given subject and gratuitous praise for certain brands of gym equipment are just ridiculous.

There are many many better resources out there. Skip this one.

Men's Health Gym Bible educated me on what different gym equipment looked like, how to use them effectively, and how I could best use them to get specific body results. I needed this book to know how to use the gym since membership is not cheap and I dont want to throw away my money. I would highly recommend this book. It's inexpensive and very handy to anybody who needs to learn about gym equipment and how to put together a cusomized gym workout routine.

Herbal Remedies for Dummies

Herbal Remedies for DummiesI found this book very well written and very well balanced. It is invaluable for the newcomer to herbs, and would be a valuable addition to the bookshelf of a more experienced user too. It's one of those books which sits in my kitchen and gets referred to almost every day.

I own about a dozen books on herbal medicine and I keep finding myself back to this one time and time again. It is well written with a ton of useful information ranging from uses, terminology, cautions, and best ways to use the herbs. A must have for anyone interested in herbal medicine

I am studying herbal medicine, and this is an excellent refresher for my courses. It would also be a great introduction to all of the basic concepts of herbal medicine for non-scholastic endeavors. Christopher Hobbs is well known in the field, and a highly reliable source.

I first have to say that I have begun to find the 'for Dummies' label a bit irritating. The first book, 'Computers for Dummies' was a clever idea in that it presented a highly technical subject and presented it in a way non-technical people could understand. Now.... there is a 'for Dummies' book on everything and there is nothing especially 'dummy-ish' about the presentation. These later dummy books, including the present one, are just regular books with a 'for Dummies' in the title.

'Herbal remedies for Dummies' is an overview of various herbs that have traditionally been used therapeutically which then presents tips and techniques for their use. The section on making various types of preparation (tincture, salves, etc) is not bad but there is nothing in the rest of the book to distinguish it from many others. Like far too many books on the subject, the author presents a mish-mash of vague notions drawn from an eclectic variety of sources and makes extravagant claims without qualifying them or even explaining the underlying terminology. For instance, we are told that such and such a herb will clear up 'liver congestion' without actually identifying what this is or how the herb is supposed to address the problem. There is no science here, just vague anecdotal evidence presented somewhat sloppily. In the section which indexes medical conditions and then lists the herbs that are used to treat them, it is suggested that those suffering menstrual cramps can find relief using Kava. In the next section, which indexes herbs and then lists the conditions for which they have a use, we find Kava alright, but then menstrual cramps is not listed underneath. This rather typifies the whole book in my mind.

I bought this book so I could have a reference for treating myself and my family with all natural herbs. I couldn't have been more pleased with this purchase. It has everything I could ever need in it. I will probably buy other herb books just to have other references but if you are new to herbs this is the book for you. It has everything a beginner could possibly need.

The Joseph H. Pilates Method at Home: A Balance, Shape, Strength, and Fitness Program

The Joseph H. Pilates Method at Home: A Balance, Shape, Strength, and Fitness ProgramAbsolutely delighted with the clear, concise way this book has been put together for teaching the Pilates method. Excellent photographs to show all positions. A book well suited to the older person especially those wanting to take control of their lazy tummy muscles again. (Tip: I use a child's soccer ball instead of the cushion or bolster which is suggested.) Congratulations to the instructor, author and publisher. A very delighted reader and practitioner at home who did not want to join a class.

The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Airborne Allergies: 100 New Cures for Symptoms from Pollen, Pets, Dust, and MoldI liked this guide to handling allergies as my daughter is allergic to dogs and mildly to cats, which we do have at home. We don't let the cats in her bedroom, and that helps a lot, but I wanted to have more ideas on how to support the immune system of an allergic person. I especially liked the herbal remedy section of the book.

Kathy Smith's Lift Weights to Lose Weight

Kathy Smith's Lift Weights to Lose WeightWhen I bought this book I didn't know the diffence between a rep. and a set. I have enjoyed the benefits of cardio workouts for years and I felt like I was ready to go a step further and begin stregth training. This book was EXCELLENT to give me the exact insight I needed to get started. Kathy takes an aproach that is often sadly missed in weight training books, she gives as much attention to home weight training as gym weight training. I love to train at home, and hate the gym scene, and yet so many books only tell you how to work muscles using only specificaly designed weight training machines, available only at the gym. From the beginning Kathy expains both the pros and cons of home and gym training and lets the reader choose. From there she balances her attention between both the home and the gym scene. I particularly loved that she went on to give helpful tips in starting your own at home set of weights for much less than you would think, and she explains how to add on to that set and what at home machines are worth their weight in gold vs. which one will more than likely only collect dust. Kathy goes on to explain the benefits of weight training and as well as tips to the most effective methods. For each exercise she specifies the muscle that is going to be targeted, the set up for the exercise, exactly what to do during the exercise, and what you need to focus on. By the time I was through this book I was sounding like one of my friends who is an actual trainer. This book offers great insight on weight training and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in taking the next step in their fitness training, I can't believe the changes I have noticed in my body!

I thought this was a great book for the person who is very new to weight lifting. I have Kathy's video, which is great...but this book is progressive, which weight training HAS to be to be effective. It gets a little harder every few weeks. I highly recommend it to those just starting out!

Buy Kathy Smith's Lift Weights to Lose Weight Now

I've been lifting weights for a little over a year, so have already experienced many of the benefits Kathy mentions in her book. I've lost 40 pounds and about 18% body fat by following a good diet and weight training at progressively heavier weight and added sets. Even though I am not brand new to weight training, I still found the book helpful. There is an anatomy chart, and Kathy dispels many myths about weight lifting, in particular that women shouldn't lift heavy or that they will get big and bulky from lifting. Also, there were a couple of exercises that I was not doing, so I was able to modify my current program a bit.

I tried using a trainer, but frankly have been disappointed, so I am now learning all I can on my own. Lift Weights to Lose Weight will be a book that I use. I like it much better than the accompanying video tape, which I have used briefly; it is not a very comprehensive workout.

I recommend this book to beginners and intermediates, and anyone who wants to learn more about the basic principles of weight lifting.

I found this book to be very helpful! I loved it. I have been exercising for many years using at home videos. I actually like this book more then some of the Kathy Smith Videos I have used! I wanted to get more involved with working out with weights now that I am in my 40's. The book covers the benefits of working out with weights, nutrition and covers lots of different exercises for each muscle group.(proper form is covered and explained in detail) for the entire body along with a suggested schedule or routine for each week. I have been very happy with the routines and do them entirely at home and have seen great results.

I had weight trained several years ago with good results but a bad fall down a flight of stairs led me in a different direction and I after gaining weight and loosing muscle I need to start again. This was an excellent fresh start for me. I saw results in just a few weeks and feel stronger and healthier and have now moved on to more serious weight training once again.

Kathy's book is very easy to follow and had very clear direction. Her training advice is sound and her guide to technique was excellent. Her eating plan is sensible and easy to follow and I found no problem working it into my day to day lifestyle. The amount of time spend training each week is very reasonable.

A great book for beginners or people who want a FRESH START

Also a very reasonably priced book.
