From the Inside: A Look at Nursing Homes and Their Patients in Todays Elder Care System.

From the Inside: A Look at Nursing Homes and Their Patients in Todays Elder Care System.Because I know I have a good chance of ending up in such a place within ten years I bought this book thru Amazon.com and read From the Inside with great interest.

I liked the humor such as on page 59 "Charts were on bathroom doors for Aides to record uninary output. Mary and I wondered if ther was a winner of the most output in all of USA." This sort of humor appeared often.

I am going to carefully reread this book as a preview of my Inside day and regard the Patients' Rights section of use to in the future.

The humor in this book is wonderful. As you read you fall in love with these people. We must remember just because someone can't hear or talk, does not mean they are unaware what is going on around them. Believe me "they are in there."

129 Natural Remedies For Weight Loss: Home Remedies Wisdom, Volume 2

129 Natural Remedies For Weight Loss: Home Remedies Wisdom, Volume 2For the price, this is a great little book. The author admittedly doesn't have a scientific background, but it looks like she has read a number books on weight loss and she has struggled with obesity herself. As such, this book is a barrage of tips and ideas on weight lost that have worked for her throughout the years. I was familiar with most of the tips outlined. However, I like her common sense approach to weight loss. In particular, she maintains that there isn't one perfect approach to weight loss for everyone. Therefore, I like the idea that she gives the reader a number of choices to assist in the process. Granted, some of her ideas are not based on science, but who's to say they won't work for someone. For example, one of her tips is to take 5 HTP, or 5-hydroxytryptophan, which has never really been shown to assist with weight loss in the literature. However, it has been shown to help with depression and maybe, just maybe, it might help someone lose weight. In spite of the lack of science-based information, I found the book refreshing. All in all, she has a number of ideas that you can pick and choose from in your effort to lose weight. She does need a good editor as the book is filled with a number of typos.

129 Natural Remedies for Weight Loss: Vol 2 was a pleasant and inspirational read. Ms. Johnston's volume is chalk full of useful thinking, eating, and exercise tips--all of them natural and potentially healthy.

The book is well-written, thoughtful, and pleasing to the eye. The book is concise, yet reveals tons of great supplements and is filled with helpful insights. Phrases like "create habits that [you] will love and want to do that will help keep [you] thin!" and "your body is a marvel and will respond to praise, encouragement and attention" help replace old thinking patterns with positive, potent thinking that will help you succeed at your weight release adventure.

I highly recommend this book for weight loss tips and a good read.

P.S. The review above comes from our health-conscious writing team.

I'll add that my own personal favorite tip was #103 bench press your kids. I didn't want to give too much away but could not resist as this tip brought back many pleasant memories. I wrestled with my four children and bench pressed them from time to time. Also, we have a few pictures of one of my sons (who did not need to lose an ounce) bench pressing his college roommate!

This is an amazing book. I learned so much about what has been keeping me from losing weight, and more importantly, how to begin to lose it.

As I age it becomes increasingly more difficult to lose weight, and increasingly easier to gain weight!

What I really like about this book is that so many of the methods described just resonated with me -which means I can do them, and stick to them! This could be the last book on weight loss that I'll ever need!

This book is actually a revelation because it contains so many tips to get you into the right mindset for losing weight. Sydney Johnson exposes many myths about eating, dieting and weight loss and then goes on to suggest positive ways that you can create a new body for yourself. The book does not expound any particular eating plan and, rather than telling you what not to eat, it tells you what you can eat to maintain a healthy body.

Sydney's book is also good for self-motivation: most dieters fail because they vaguely promise themselves that they will lose weight but without the necessary determination their resolve fails.

This book is a goldmine of facts and tips and inspiration. A must-have for intelligent dieters!

Details Men's Style Manual: The Ultimate Guide for Making Your Clothes Work for You

Details Men's Style Manual: The Ultimate Guide for Making Your Clothes Work for YouThe main reason I purchased this item was for its numerous illustrations. Just about every page has a full color picture of clothes. From a glance I can tell just how long a blazer should be. Or perhaps how long a sweater's sleeves should fall when wearing it over top of a collared shirt.

I use this book as a reference manual on how clothes should fit. Need to buy a new tuxedo? Turn to the formal wear section and read up! It also gives you a few basic ideas on how to wear things. For instance, how to match a shirt and tie with jeans and a blazer. It won't tell you exactly how to wear things but just offer you guidelines with some great pictures.

For the $20 this book costs you get a free 1 year subscription to Details Magazine ($10 value) along w/ a ton of up to date information (Published October of 2007) so it's definitely worth it.

This book should become standard issue for every man after college, if not high school. While style and fashion is a very personal and very individual process, it pays to understand men's clothing.

Chapters are broken down by article of clothing, from shirts, pants, jeans and polos to coats, gloves, hats and leather, everything is covered. And it is all explained in a very direct, excuse me ladies, but man's kind of way, like reading a car manual almost. It is as good a read all the way through as it is a quick reference guide. In fact, it's as a reference guide that this book really shines. When dressing for any occasion, a quick flip through the book can help you choose the appropriate attire for any event, while feeling both confident in your look and comfortable in your attire.

All in all, men and the women who shop for men's clothing should check this out especially if you want to start filling your closet with a wardrobe that is ready for anything. Great job, Details.

Covers the basics very well, and gives quite a few ideas on how to change things up. Also includes a card for a free year (or year extention) to a Details subscription. Worth the money.

EDIT: Just went back through parts of the book again, and forgot to mention one key item. There are several points in the book where they suggest a new way/item to try, with 3 different levels of "difficulty", for example, wearing a sport coat with a tie, then a sport coat with jeans, etc. Something I hadn't seen mentioned before, even in their mag, and it's a great idea.

Like most other guys, I'm an imbecile when it comes to fashion. Luckily, I realized this recently and started trying to correct the problem. The Details Manual is a book I picked up, seeing that ratings-wise, it was the best selection. I'm really impressed with it. The book contains guides and models on what should be a mans closet; it touches on most subjects regarding a mans wardrobe options: Jeans, Shirts, Blazers, Suits, etc. The book gives you the basic parts of clothes, and how they should fit. I'll use the first chapter (shirts) as an example; first is shirt basics (parts of the shirt: cuffs, collars, etc.), it goes on to shirt options giving a few examples of decently nice shirts, after examples it tells you the characteristics of a perfect fit like how it should feel like when sitting down, from here it goes to collar types, dressing options, a kind of challenge for the chapter (challenges are on every chapter), and finally ends with the don'ts of shirts (EX. Don't unbutton your shirt too far, and it tells you why). I don't really agree with the person who said this book is for 20 to 30 year olds, I think this is a great, standard manual so to speak, for a man at any age, thats my opinion though.

I recently made a resolution to stop dressing like I'm in college and to start dressing my age, so I picked this book up on recommendation of a friend. The best thing about this book are the excellent photos showing different outfits. I passed up buying some of the "classic" style guides that didn't have good photos. Not all of their recommendations are "me", but it has been very helpful in establishing a good baseline for beginning to build a wardrobe.

Color Me Confident: Change Your Look - Change Your Life!

Color Me Confident: Change Your Look - Change Your Life! This book utilizes a well-respected system of color classification called the Munsell system, but then it fails to apply the Munsell system fully in its proferred color recommendations.

The Munsell system classifies colors according to three characteristics: hue (undertone), value (depth), and chroma (clarity). A color's hue may be either warm (yellow-based) or cool (blue-based). A color's value measures its lightness or darkness. A color's chroma measures its clarity or softness.

The book explains these three aspects of color evaluation but then sets out categories that fail to incorporate all three aspects. According to the Color Me Confident categories, you must select one dominant characteristic out of the Munsell system, i.e. that your appearance is deep (a value measurement) or cool (a hue classification) or soft (a chroma measurement). You are permitted one secondary characteristic, but the system does not accomodate the third category of color classification. Thus, if your color value is deep, your color hue is cool, and your color chroma is soft, you are forced to choose between 3 categories (Deep/Cool, Cool/Soft, or Soft/Cool), each of which only includes 2 of these characteristics. There is no category that accomodates deep, cool, and soft. You are supposed to choose which characteristics "dominate" your look; however, such a choice goes against the logic underlying the system. Each of the Munsell categories measures a different aspect of color; these different aspects cannot be readily and sensibly compared. Sorry for the cliche, but it's a bit like comparing apples and oranges.

Despite these flaws, the book may be useful in identifying your underlying color characteristics and then applying information from the different color categories to help improve your color choices.

I looked through this book at a local bookstore and decided not to buy it mainly because the color categories it presents are superficial and inapplicable to a great many people. We are categorized according to our "dominant characteristics," i.e., by our hair colors and eye colors--not according to our "season," a more subtle and sophisticated categorization that includes skin tone. Seasonal color analysis requires a good deal more training and artistry than you would need to recognize, say, a Deep type (dark hair and dark eyes).

Spillane and Sherlock's Color Me Beautiful's Looking Your Best categorizes people by both their dominant characteristics and their seasons. The problem with that book's approach is that each dominant characteristic is linked to only two seasons. For example, if you are Deep, you're either an Autumn or a Winter, but not a Spring or a Summer. This seems to be why the new CMB book, Color Me Confident, categorizes people by only two of the three color characteristics defined by Munsell. If you're Deep and Cool, it's assumed that you must be Clear as well, since Winter coloring is clear, not soft. Cool and Soft is Summer.

In the seasonal system, you could be a dark-haired, dark-eyed Spring or Summer, or a light-haired, light-eyed Autumn or Winter. So much variation is possible within each season, in fact, that the dominant-characteristic system can help in customizing your personal palette. A black Summer palette will have stronger colors than a blond Summer palette. Yet both will have the cool, soft look characteristic of Summer.

CMB's Looking Your Best defines the dominant characteristic types generally enough that you may be able to determine yours even if none of them obviously suit you. But Color Me Confident defines each type so narrowly that one type is presented as the "catch-all" for people who don't fit the other types: the so-called "Soft" type, which contains a good deal of earthy Autumn colors. I look terminally ill in earthy Autumn colors. Each of the palettes in this book is a hodgepodge of Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter colors (as defined by Carole Jackson in the original Color Me Beautiful) that may be suitable to one dominant characteristic, but are not, as a group, suited to me--nor, I daresay, to many other people, either.

I'll stick with the seasonal theory for color advice, and I recommend Jackson's and Spillane-Sherlock's books over CMB's latest.

I devour all books written on this subject since it is my passion. This book is beautiful looking and talks about much more than color. About half of the book offers suggestions on how to dress your body shape, find your personal style, and apply makeup. The color theory presented here is a modern improvement on the seasonal color system introduced over 20 years ago in Color Me Beautiful. However this book no longer uses seasonal references for color types, possibly as a way to appease women who think that being a 'season' is outdated. But it is based on the very same principles of color intensity, values, and hues. I particularly liked the photos and suggestions for each type on how to wear black when it is not an ideal color for you. But I caution readers that determining your personal color type from a book can be difficult. My own coloring could fit into three different categories based on the checklists of hair, skin, and eye colors suggested. Read the book for its great information but then see a skilled colorist to be professionally typed using an objective hands-on process to confirm your ideal palette. I've seen too many people who have self-analyzed their coloring using a book who have then built entire wardrobes around a less than ideal palette. The results of an accurate color analyis are too wonderful to leave to chance.

The book is full of useless fillings. Finding your colors is limited to few hair and eye color combinations. It also depends on you doing a test with different colored fabrics & determing how the color reflect against your skin. After reading the book, I still don't know what my colors are. Besides, with so many different color hues on the market, how can one tell if what you're buying is an ever green or true green for example, confusing. The lack of pictures showing the types of collars they're recommending for different body types (e.g Mandarin

collar,cowl,bardot...)...is annoying,to say the least. Questionnaires are poorly structured, & the section on makeup, underwear & accessories is trivial. Save your money (i'm glad the book I read was a borrow from the library) and save your time. Pass.

This is a variation on the color system that assigns people to the four seasons. It is an interesting addition to that idea, I was only disappointed that they spent as little time as they did on the color information. A good part of the book is dedicated to body shape and styling tips. By the way, David Kibbe's theories in his book Metamorphosis are the best ideas ever re dressing to suit one's shape, the very best, and yet he seems to get very little attention. People interested in this book might want to check out his, as well. It is out of print, but available used and therefore inexpensive. "Color Me Beautiful," by Carole Jackson is about the original color system--seasonal--and is still a good read.

The Last-Minute Party Girl : Fashionable, Fearless, and Foolishly Simple Entertaining

The Last-Minute Party Girl : Fashionable, Fearless, and Foolishly Simple EntertainingI throw several large get-togethers, plus many smaller, more intimate gatherings every year. In my neighborhood we're known as the "party house". I LOVE entertaining and I love being able to do something different each time.

This book gave me several wonderful tips, new recipes (that can be prepared and stored) for last minute pop-ins, and ideas on how to raise the bar on my own parties. My last one was this past weekend, we had 40+ guests for a White Elephant gift exchange. I used several of her recipes, but the one that I heard the most raves about were the spiced/carmalized nuts. They were easy, I was able to make them days before and they were wonderful!

While I wouldn't say all the recipes are "last minute", most of them can be made ahead of time and completed last minute. This book was very entertaining as I seem to share her sense of humor and found it a delightful read. I'm actually purchasing 2 more for hostess gifts...

Although I had read the other reviews before I bought this book (and therefore knew there were no pictures) I was still a little disappointed to see how plain it was. I love the way the author writes and it makes it a much more entertaining read than it may seem to be at first. Directions for a holiday martini which include "shake it like Santa knows you've been bad" had me laughing out loud and picturing how to throw my own holiday bash. I also appreciate the section which tells where you can find many of the items she refers to throughout the book. Overall, the book is a great starting point on how to be prepared for guests at any time...just add your own personal touches and you'll be ready to go!

I bought this book because my husband invited some work people over for dinner. I didn't realize that this is so entertaining (funny), and the recipes are just so delicious. Needless to say, my husband was very impressed with what I put together that night so we have now invited about 20 people over for Thanksgiving. I use the book all the time, and our children loves the appetizers. I also gave it to my single friend who is now engaged. Highly recommended for people who loves entertaining.

I enjoyed the way the author added humor to the book. Overall, great book, but the recipes are not really something that can be prepared "Last Minute". Would have like to have seen more recipes that did not require so much prep. But, great tips on invites and decorations.

I love throwing parties and being the hostess, and I found this book incredibly entertaining and fun to read. I read it in an afternoon, skimming through the recipe section. I highly recommend this book to anyone who's looking for fun ways to liven up your next social soiree, and I've already used some of the ideas for small gatherings I've had. Great book!

The Comfort of Home: A Complete Guide for Caregivers

The Comfort of Home: A Complete Guide for CaregiversThe Midwest Book Review (April 2007) writes: Now in a newly and substantially revised and expanded third edition, "The Comfort of Home: A Complete Guide For Caregivers" continues to earn its reputation as the 'bible' for providing home caregivers to aged, ill or handicapped loved ones with a thoroughly 'user friendly' illustrated guide that covers everything necessary from daily living tasks to preparations for hospice care, to making funeral arrangements. I was really impressed with the comprehensive material in this 3rd edition of "The Comfort of Home." As a Social Worker in a previous life, this would have been the book that I would have given to individuals who were considering becoming a primary caregiver. Nothing has been left out in this very well-written guide that a person needs to consider when undertaking this process.

"The Comfort of Home" is set up so that it can be read from beginning to end, or as a reference guide that a person can look up specifics. Oftentimes, taking on the task of a caregiver seems completely overwhelming. Meyer helps break the tasks down into manageable steps that include tips, questions that need to be asked and additional resources to follow up with. The author begins the book by helping the reader decide if home care is an option for them to consider. Her approach is honest and guilt-free for the person making this decision. Following this process, a person needs to decide what level of care is needed and whether this can be provided at home. I really thought that the section on paying for care through Medicare, Medicare part D, Medigap and the many other types of benefits was easy to follow.

As a proponent of long-term planning, I especially liked the section for setting up a care plan. Following these suggestions will make it easy to have someone step in as a temporary caregiver to give the primary caregiver a break, reporting to medical staff and in helping the caregiver not to make mistakes. Being a caregiver can be exhausting and keeping records on the patient, especially with important medication schedules. There are so many chapters that cover every aspect of a person's life such as exercise, diet, nutrition, special challenges and daily activities. Each area is thoughtfully addressed and ends with other available resources in dealing with that area.

The author does an excellent job throughout "The Comfort of Home" in reminding the caregiver to take care of themselves. She even includes a whole section on how to avoid burnout and ends with dealing with funeral arrangements and the grieving process. I would highly recommend this guide to anyone who is considering becoming a caregiver.

Book received free of charge.

I desperately needed help preparing to care for my dad in my home. I began by gathering information. Did a lot of internet reading. Read from caring.com, signed up for newsletters from an eldercare specialist lawyer, studied my dad's specific health challenges...but still needed help. If I could have had only one resource, this would be the one I'd choose. It's an organized and genuinely practical guide that I now recommend to others.

The 2nd most helpful book I found was, "They're YOUR Parents, Too!"...VERY helpful if you have siblings involved. Helps you understand some of the most unexpected ways sibling relationships can become suddenly stressed beyond recognition when an elderly parent needs care. It's pretty tough being a fulltime caregiver and finding yourself suddenly "under attack" from a sibling that you assumed would be fully supportive and sympathetic of your situation!
