I am on my second time going through this book. It is a great guide to detoxing your body and mind. I have tried other books and methods but Blasucci makes it very clear and easy to follow. I did not feel overwhelmed and felt that the information was easy to follow. The recipes at the end of the book are tasty and a good example of the wholesome food that the author recommends. Enjoy!

I'm on my 2nd time through the book ... this time, instead of just reading it I'm treating it like Loa's boot camp, working a chapter a week. Still early in the program, I'm finding it to truly be life changing. All Health's Breaking Loose holds my keys for perpetual youth. Loa's vast knowledge of all-things-natural is shared in a way that's easy to understand, and more importantly, easy to internalize. This has been so good for me that I'm buying copies for all my adult family members for Christmas.

This book helped me regain my ability to touch others in my family with respect and compassion. Inside this book you'll find many attractive photos of folks sharing tender, loving massage and touch. They provide a positive model that adults and children can enjoy. With such photos and entertaining writing, "Home Massage" does something no other massage book does: it teaches that communicating and healing through touch is our natural gift.

This book teaches everything you will need to know to give a wonderful massage how to set up (whether using the floor, bed, chair or table), what to have on hand for your partner's comfort, and all the basic massage strokes. The photos and descriptions are excellent. The writers make it clear that your intuition will help guide you as you listen to your partner and your own heart.

Because this is massage for everyone, there are chapters that cover special considerations for giving massage to babies, children, expectant mothers, someone who is ill, and the older adult. The photos of children who are thrilled to give massage to siblings, Mommy or Daddy illustrate what a rich resource home massage can be in giving all family members more quality care and intimate, loving interaction.

In my home, this book made it possible for us to open up to new levels of trust. I recommend this book to people who want to enrich their relationships with family and friends.

A Factory of One: Applying Lean Principles to Banish Waste and Improve Your Personal Performance

A Factory of One: Applying Lean Principles to Banish Waste and Improve Your Personal PerformanceTraditional Work: How you work is probably how you worked.

When I looked at that line in my notebook (after reading Daniel Markowitz's book, A Factory of One) I thought about the busy-ness that many people talk about as they relate to their workday. As you consider what you get done in a typical 8 or 10 or 15-hour shift, do you stop to consider HOW you get that work done?

Over the 145 pages of this well-written and well-documented book Dan shows very specific methods you can use to apply "Lean Principles" (traditionally reserved for manufacturing and production lines to remove wasted movements thereby increasing overall productivity) to the "Knowledge Work" that keeps so many of us busy and focused on working overtime.

I was pleased to see Dan write about Parkinson's Law of work: Namely, that the work you have will generally fill the time you have available to do that work. If something is due in a week, it'll take about a week. If it's due later today, well you get the point.

The point of applying Lean Principles to improve personal performance is two-fold:

1. Create a flow of working: so that once you get there, you stay there and produce something (a thought, a product, etc) of value

2. Reduce the stress of wasted movements to focus on more meaningful activity

If you're thinking of getting this book, here's just one of the themes you can expect to explore while you're reading:

Dan asks you to define your "value;" the value of your service or product to the market. Once you've identified that value, then you can work on making things as efficient as possible in order to make that value available to those that matter: clients, community, organization, family, friends, etc. Oh, it might be helpful to know how Dan defines value. I'm walking away with three indicators:

What does the customer pay for?

What are you doing to transform the product or the service?

What activity seems to be done "correctly?"

Of course, you'll walk away from reading this with your own ideas of what "value" means to you, your business, your work. I loved this prompt, though, as it made me think a bit longer about all those "extra to-dos" that have piled up around my own work station lately:

"Should you do better what doesn't deserve doing in the first place?"

Consider what you do, as an entrepreneur, manager, associate of the business you're in. What are the specific activities that you "do" that provide value? The ideas that Dan gives you on (a) how to think about those activities and (b) what to do to make those activities as efficient as possible may be exactly what you need to take not just what you do but HOW you do it to the next level. Imagine being MORE productive without having to buy new technology, hire more staff or change (radically) your business or product.

What WILL you have to change? Your approach to work. To get you think about what that might look, sound and feel like, identify very specifically WHERE your time goes:

fixing

delegating

waiting

over-doing

reviewing

re-doing

explaining

etc

Once you identify WHERE your time, energy and focus is "spent" during the day, then it's time to apply Lean Principles to YOUR work. I hope you enjoy reading (and thinking about) this book as much as I did!

These concepts will be very familiar to people familiar with continuous improvement and more specifically Lean and Six Sigma. However, you do not have to be a practitioner to understand or read the book. When trade terms are used they are explained in simple everyday language without losing a beat. The author demonstrates an in depth knowledge of the Lean Principles. There may be others with his depth of knowledge but I have seen few transfer it into such simple, practical and useable terms. I found myself reading a "how to" book like a novel, reminding myself more than once to bend a corner or mark a page for future reference.

My favorite part of the book was the part on living in your calendar versus your inbox. Quick look at your screen and see what is open! That comment in itself added more than a few minutes to my day of productivity. Another example is his description of a personal A3 for problem solving was absolutely flawless in its description and the use of it.

Are you going to get 2 hours a day of time saving tips from the book? I doubt it. What you will get is more productivity and feeling better about what and how you accomplished it. It was my New Year's Day read and I have picked it up every day since then. Not saying you won't be able to put it down but at this point it looks that way for me.

I read Factory of One when it first came out and I was intrigued and impressed by it. I decided to try it out. And it works most of it. I was already accustomed to 5S in the office; maybe not that good at it, but accustomed. The "Spotting the Waste" chapter gave me some useful tips. I started creating an index to the handwritten notebook I use everyday. I moved the current customers and current prospect folders on my PC to the top of my hard drive directory. I subsequently moved them to the cloud so I can access them on iPads and phones. Both these little things have saved me a few minute each day ..... and it all adds up.

Chapter 3 about Flow. I have worked on the 4D (when work comes it, either Do, Delegate, Designate, or Discard). I have not mastered this yet , but it has improved the way I work. Especially with emails. I have now set times each day for emails and do not constantly review them. It was quite freeing to realize that emails are not urgent. I have had success (when I am in the office) with setting aside chunks of time for particular tasks and sticking with it (mostly). I have set up checklists for routine yet troublesome tasks. The most successful for me a constant traveller has been a checklist of packing for a trip. Another has been my weekly review of billings.

Visual management has been the most useful thing I learned from the book. I have used visual management for many years in one form or another, and I have worked with many manufacturers helping them to introduce visual management. But I had never thought about applying this to my own work. Typical consultant, some people a saying!! When I was in the office I posted my work visually, but when I am on the road or working with customers I had the old fashioned MS Outlook todo list.

It took me a while to figure it out and I went through several steps to get there. I started with mimicking the board on page 106, but using an 11x17 sheet and small post-it's. I then developed an elaborate mindmap on the iPad. Then I moved to a slim, pocket sized note book with even smaller post-it's. All these worked well because I use the principles; visualize the backlog, limit the WIP, designate times. I expect that I will keep refining this, but I am very happy with the way it works.

I recommend this book highly, because the methods and ideas work and have helped to make me more productive and more importantly a little less frantic. Go buy this book.

"A Factory of One: Applying Lean Principles to Banish Waste and Improve Your Personal Performance" by Daniel Markovitz is an interesting and new look at an old topic, productivity improvement. I'm not sure there was much "new" here, but rather some solid concepts presented in a different manner. I liked the book, and feel is deserves a place among the productivity and business books that line the shelves.

It's just under 150 pages long, which makes it a quick read. It's well organized and flows from topic to topic, providing solid advice on improving personal performance and productivity through the use of Lean principles originally designed to help Toyota factories outperform their competition. Thus, the title, "A Factory of One."

Using this Lean Thinking model, Markovitz addresses the topics of What's Your Job; Spotting Value, Spotting Waste; Flow; Visual Management; and From Bad to Good, and From Good to Great. All of these are important.

I liked the concept of gemba, in the chapter on defining what your job is. I think it is very important to determine what you should be doing that creates value vs. the incidentals and wasteful things that sometimes occupy our time. This chapter does a good job of getting you to look at that. The chapter on spotting value and waste introduces a 5S model which is okay for looking at how you are doing things. There are many of these kinds of models and this is no better or worse than the others. The key is to actually use a system and prevent your office from looking like the picture of Al Gore's office used in the book for illustrative purposes.

The author uses 4Ds to help process work and make it flow. Again, this will work if you actually use it. I did like the part about multitasking, but again, this is not really new. A number of books these last few years have looked at how inefficient multitasking is, but the other's take on the topic is good and I hope people listen. The chapter on visual management provided some good ideas for making one's tasks easier, more streamlined. This is probably something I had not thought to use outside of places such as the garage, but I see now how the concept and idea can be expanded to other areas.

And of course there is a bit on kaizen, the Japanese term for continuous improvement. Much has been written about this, but the section in this book is well done with some of the basics.

Bottom line, "A Factory of One" is a short, direct, and good book on increasing your personal productivity through the use of Lean principles. If you need a little boost in this area, give it a read and try out the principles. You're bound to increase your personal performance.

Most personal productivity books will tell you to stop checking email so frequently, or not to multitask. Dan Markovitz's book goes beyond the platitudes and explains a comprehensive theory of how to become more effective as a business professional. Drawing on his thorough knowledge of Lean principles popularized by Toyota and embraced by factories Markovitz shows how asking similar questions can help individual executives determine their priorities and eliminate annoyances, hassles and waste from their everyday activities. His book tells you both the "how" and "why" of productivity and in the process, will make you a better business leader.

Changing Bodies, Changing Lives: Expanded Third Edition: A Book for Teens on Sex and Relationships

Changing Bodies, Changing Lives: Expanded Third Edition: A Book for Teens on Sex and RelationshipsThis is the best book on being a teenager that I have ever read! And this should mean a lot to you coming from a teen (I'm a 15 year old male). It's different from other books in that it encourages teens to make their own decisions in life. It doesn't come out and say, "No! Sex is bad! You will rot in hell if you have sex before you are married!" Instead, it gives equal reasons of why to have sex and why not to and then describes all the means of birth control. But it doesn't just deal with sex, it also touches on emotions that you might have through adolecence, masturbation, what you can do if you do become pregnent, and even drugs.

I bought this for my 15 year old son for reference and for his information.

His father won't talk to him about sex and he is too embarrassed to talk with me. In fact, I had to leave it in his room and he swore he wouldn't look at it. That he had learned everything he needed to know in 1 week of sex ed at school (!)

2 weeks later he thanked me for buying it. Still trying to keep the lines of communication open but at least now I know he is armed with knowledge.

This book is an outstanding volume for all teens. It is full of information that they need for making healthy choices through their teen years. It does not promote any single ideology, or push a certain set of values or choices. It gives information that the teen may only get hodge-podge through friends, conversations with parents or some school programs. Also, the book is full of quotes from interviews with teens. So, the teen hears the feelings and ideas in a form that they can "hear", not an adult voice telling them what to do. Far more approachable for teens. This one's a must!

I ordered Changing Bodies, Changing Lives for my son, who is just hitting puberty. I own Our Bodies Ourselves so I expected a high caliber book, and it didn't disappoint. I paged through it before I gave it to him and was reassured to see that it delivers the same kind of honest, nonjudgmental, thorough information as OBOS does.

It handles not only the standard "puberty" information of sexual anatomy, safer sex and drugs, but also emotional and social areas like negotiating increased independence from parents, the sometimes confusing nature of sexual and romantic orientation, and body image and individuality. The material quoted from teens is frank and unpolished and helps to highlight that other people have probably experienced some of the same things the reader has. The book's approach is clearly that everyone is different, there is no one right way to navigate the difficult teenage years, and that everyone needs to be informed to make their own choices.

I don't know why people reviewed the pictures as looking out of date. Maybe it's regional but I was pleasantly surprised that they looked very current. (It may seem like a small thing but I remember how hard it is, when you're a teen, to take advice from a book that sounds like it's old and clueless.)

I didn't expect my son to be too interested in it yet but he looked at it for some time and shared a few things that he found surprising or interesting. His verdict is "Huh. They just tell kids what we need to know. That's kind of neat" which lets me know this was the right book to get.

I have no agenda except to facilitate my children growing up as healthy, well-adjusted and happy as possible. Because of that my priority was to place the most unbiased and complete information I could into their hands. I am very happy with this book and very glad I can trust that my children will not be misinformed or have information withheld from them because of someone else's agenda.

It does a good job of presenting different social views on human sexuality without endorsing any one view. A great resource for adolescents and a great way to make up the education gap for all the innacurate and missing info in their health classes.

Homeopathic Remedies: A Quick and Easy Guide to Common Disorders and Their Homeopathic Treatments

Homeopathic Remedies: A Quick and Easy Guide to Common Disorders and Their Homeopathic TreatmentsDr. Hershoff writes a homeopathic reference masterpiece in his latetest homeopathic guidebook. Homeopathic Remedies is easy to use and covers a huge spectrum of ailments. Even a novice will be able to prescribe homeopathy after reading it! Along with information on how to prescribe homeopathic remedies and dosages, Dr. Hershoff gives a brief but yet very throrough history of homeopathy. This book is so complete, that it is the only guide you need to begin your own gentle art of healing using homeopathy.

I have a small library of homeopathic books, and this is the first one I consult when a problem arises. It is a repertory, not a materia medica, so then I cross check myself with other books to confirm.

The first section which discusses about homeopathy is concise and useful, including discussion of potencies and modalities. The next part is body system charts to quickly refer you to the rest of the book which is organized by problem alphabetically, each with a list of possible remedies, each remedy with a brief description characterizing it so you can choose the most appropriate.

This book is an exceptional introduction to the world of homeopathy.

It begins with a detailed explanation of the concepts behind this form of medicine, including the systems of the body, definitions of disease and injury, types of pain and much more. It also include basic information that correlates to all homeopathic remedies, including dosing information and contraindications. The system of dosing homeopathics can be a little confusing at first, as it comes across as a bit "backwards" (a lower number being a more concentrated tincture), and this book does an excellent job of explaining this system in a reader-friendly way.

After the numerous introductory articles, this book contains an "A-Z Prescriber" that is indispensable as a household reference. It covers mental, emotional and physical diseases, from stress to bleeding to infections and SO much more. Under each disease section, it covers a list of all the different potential remedies, with detailed explanations of the variations in symptoms that indicate one may work better than anotherthere are no "one size fits all" diagnoses or remedies in homeopathy.

As a parent, I can sleep better knowing I have this book on hand. I'm fortunate enough to live in an area where these substances are relatively easy to come by, so I have the peace of mind knowing that if my daughter has a problem, I can quickly identify the best way to help her. There is a whole section on children's diseases, from colic to chickenpox, ear infections and more.

My experiences thusfar with homeopathy have been incredible. In one instance, I slammed my finger in a sliding door so hard that it started bleeding underneath my nail, and there was a clear dark line across the entire nail. I was almost certain I was going to lose the nail, and my finger swelled up a good 5x its normal size. Enter Arnica... I applied Arnica gel to my entire finger twice that day. The swelling was completely eliminated in less than an hour, and the trapped blood began to shift and partially clear within a day. Within 2 days, the dark line has disappeared and there was just one small pocket of blood, which grew out with my nail and left no trace of the injury. I was quite impressed.

My second confirmation of homeopathy's authenticity came in the form of teething medicine. My daughter was cutting 5 teeth at the same time, and, understandably, quite miserable. I purchased a homeopathic teething gel from my local Whole Foods, which contained a combination of pain relieving and calming plant extracts. I happened to be cutting a wisdom tooth myself, so I tried it out on my tooth to see if it was any good. I was amazed that it offered faster and better relief than Orajel or similar allopathic products. It didn't completely numb my gums, just took the pain away, completely! So of course I offered it to the baby, who was instantly soothed and slept, well, like a baby :)

And my third testament to homeopathy is my experience with baby's first ear infection. I'm rather wary of antibiotics, as I have done a vast amount of research on antibiotic resistance and childhood ear infections, and recognize that 1. antibiotics increase the reccurance of ear infections because they suppress the immune system; 2. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, 80% of ear infections will clear up with no treatment; and 3. in studies, antibiotics only shortened the length of the infection by one day.

So I purchased a bottle of Dr. Sears recommended homeopathic ear drops, and I was blown away by the results. She had been completely inconsolable, screaming, kicking, running away and pulling on her ears. Within a minute of putting the drops in her ears, she stopped crying, smiled and gave me a big hug! We used the drops every 8 hours for 2 daysand that quick, the infection was gone. I remember taking a 2 week course of amoxycillin for an ear infection at the age of 11, and that didn't even work. 2 days instead of 2 weeks? No side effects? Yes please.

All of the above remedies are congruent with the prescriber in this book.

I will also add that this book covers some topics you might not expectvaccine detoxification (helping eliminate the mercury and formaldehyde used as preservatives in vaccines from your body), reproductive issues like ovarian cysts, uterine hemorrhage... a lot of things you wouldn't expect.

This book is excellent, the only thing it lacks is detailed explanations of what each remedy is, where it comes from and how it works. I understand this book is about the ailment of your body, not the herbs itself, and would be 3x the size and 3x the price if it also included detailed information on the substances themselves. I'm currently looking for the perfect "counterpart" to this book, a book about the tinctures themselves. In the meantime, the internet does suffice :) I will update my review with a product link when I find the right one.

So in a nutshell, I absolutely recommend this book and it should be on every family's bookshelfor medicine cabinet!

*Almost a mirror image of his herbal remedy book, I recommend them as companion guides*

Like his other book on herbal remedies, Asa Hershoff, ND, divides the source into an easily readable guide. He started out with a long chapter on homeopathic advantages, research on the remedies, their types, history of, and more. This include types of pain, taking the remedies, doses, and processes. The treatment index guide is broken into sections identical to the herbal guide. Each condition is listed alphabetically under its condition, with a brief intro on the problem and how to solve it, followed then by a list of homeopathic remedies by name only then 3-4 lines below. Each line has a different reason for using it. Stars are by the homeopathic remedy, signifying how recommended it is. One star means a weaker treatment, while five is obviously highly regarded.

While in no means a comprehensive 'teaching' text, it's not meant to be. Instead it's a reference that allows easy location of conditions and their treatment, with notes jotted down. Concise, clear, and good to grab in a pinch.

Want Homeopathic Remedies: A Quick and Easy Guide to Common Disorders and Their Homeopathic Treatments Discount?

Homeopathic Remedies is the BEST self-help guide to home-based treatment in the world. Why? It is simply the ONLY accurate guide to symptoms and the remedy they treat. Every other self-help homeopathic book has completely inaccurate and simply wrong information, because of a crucial thing in homeopathy called "modalities."

Modalities are simply what makes a symptom better or worse, such as time of day, hot or cold, standing or sitting, etc, etc. But the thing is, there are modalities for the person as a whole (you like hot weather or you don't) and there are completely separate modalities for INDIVIDUAL CONDITIONS. You have a headache that is better from cold clothes. But your stomach ache wants a hot water bottle.

Without this accurate information, prescribing all wrong! And every single modern author has just not gone to (much bigger) trouble of researching the individual modalities for each condition. They just use the generalized modalities of the whole person for the individual condition. Which doesn't work! Hershoff is the ONLY author who has actually done this work, and thus produced a homeopathic guidebook worthy of the name!

Besides, the illustrations and layout make this a visually easy book to use and pleasure to read. A must have for any homeopathic home library or homeopathic practitioner who wants an accurate guide to treatment.

The Herbal Medicine Cabinet: Preparing Natural Remedies at Home

The Herbal Medicine Cabinet: Preparing Natural Remedies at HomeThis book is exactly what I was looking for. As a student of altenative medicine, this will be a great addition to my "health library". There is a check list for one's herbal first aid kit/medicine cabinet, very concise and easy to follow directions, a little history of the herbs, a list of ailments and what to use. The ingredients for the most part are easy to get your hands on and if you can't seem to find what you are looking for--there is an extensive resource guide that includes everything Debra St Claire has discussed in the book! Lip balms, salves, deodorants, mouth washes, baby products---you name it and you will most likely find it in this book. If I were to choose one book to start me on the path to health altenatives, this would be the one I would choose. Five star? No. How about a six!

Debra St. Claire (formerly Debra Nuzzi) did a series of videos with a book inside of it that was the basis for this book. Ms. St. Claire expanded the material and has made a very easy to understand and accessible book for both the beginner and advanced medicine maker. I had the pleasure of seeing Debra at Herfest a couple of years ago, and she is a fantastic teacher! This book is certainly something every herbalist or anyone interested in natural healing should own.

I am a clinical herbalist of over 20 years experience and I have recommended it for years to beginning herbalists. I find this to be one of the best texts for learning how to make tinctures, syrups, lozenges, lip balms, salves, and other preparations. Debra St. Claire uses easy to find ingredients, takes you step by step through preparation and gives you good solid recipes. She shows you how to do the tincture math so that your preparations don't mold. (If you intend to pour vodka over mint or lemon balm leaves you better know how much water is in the leaves! And if you want to get the resins out of St.John's Wort, you better have access to high alcohol like Everclear or Baccardi 151.)

This is the ultimate, hands-on herbal and will either be sufficient for family treatment or stand as a first step for people who want to learn western herbalism. I also suggest it for Chinese herbology students who don't learn all of the hands on techniques outside of decoction. Well worth the money.
