The Science of Black Hair: A Comprehensive Guide to Textured Hair Care

The Science of Black Hair: A Comprehensive Guide to Textured Hair CareCan I be frank with you? I don't take hair advice from very many people. I really have to trust the person I'm taking advice from and the person really has to know what they are talking about. One of the people that I trust implicitly when it comes to high texture hair know-how is Audrey Davis-Sivasothy. I have learned so much from her articles, so I was so excited to get her new book entitled The Science of Black Hair: A Comprehensive Guide to Textured Hair Care.

Just browsing through and reading some of the chapters, I can already tell you that this is a must have reference book for women with high texture hair. In the book, Audrey actually lists recommended products based on what they can do for your hair's protein/moisture balance. The book is very technical, but also insanely practical and straight-forward. If you want to know the science of how our hair thrives and flourishes, get this book. It literally is a text book for managing high texture hair. You'll read about the hair structure, scalp structure, porosity, building healthy hair regimens, product selection, coloring, transitioning, hair care for children and so much more.

Good books are an investment and worth every penny you spend on them. When you splurge on a $25 hair product, you and I both know that sometimes it's a hit, but a lot of times... it's a miss. With books like this, you actually get the knowledge you need to make more informed decisions as a consumer and save yourself time and money on your hair. So, before you take another trip to Ricky's, Whole Foods, Sephora or Target to hoard hair products that may or may not work, I highly recommend that you invest in The Science of Black Hair: A Comprehensive Guide to Textured Hair Care. I certainly will be keeping my copy of the book bedside while on my journey to waist length.

Finally there is an answer to the mystery of growing and maintaining healthy hair for those of African descent. All of the serious research and data concerning Black hair has been compiled into one easy to navigate text. Never have I seen a more in depth look at hair. After spending loads of money on styling product after styling product, then finally hiding my own hair with braid extensions, I feel more confident with styling my naturally worn hair. The book offers tons of pictures to guide you along the more technical points. You learn any and everything there is to know about the most unique hair type on the planetfrom the varying curl patterns to the structure of the individual hair strand. You'll even become a wiser consumer after learning what all of those scientific ingredients listed on the backs of styling products mean for your hair. Anyone who has struggled to grow soft, healthy, vibrant hair, whether natural or relaxed, should read this book.

The book came super fast. I did not mind paying the price although I thought the paperback was a bit pricey for "me."

I sat for hours reading. I like how the book goes into the history and scientific side of hair. It is very thorough on this matter. I also liked how it focused on the health versus styles.

I became disappointed when trying to figure out what applied to me as a natural. I was not sure if some regimens could be applied to me since I do not have a perm. I felt the book tailored more to permed hair than natural hair or women transitioning from perms to naturals. It seemed as if it kept going between the two in regards to what regimens to apply so I got lost. There are 3 chapters that are dedicated to permed hair. I would have liked to have seen that much attention to natural hair ALONE. By this I mean, 3 chapters on how to take care of natural hair without having to filter out, sentences prior or after, tips on permed hair.

Also, I did not understand why having to choose several shampoos when the focus, from what I have learned, should be on conditioners/leave-in conditioners.

I am going to continue to use YouTube. I also ordered "Grow It" and "Ultra Black Hair Growth" in hopes they will provide further insight. This book did not provide the insight I was looking for, add to what already know or have viewed on YouTube.

I'm glad I actually read the book and am not wondering "what if" however it is going back :(

Want The Science of Black Hair: A Comprehensive Guide to Textured Hair Care Discount?

Since I was a little girl, I always wanted full, long, thick, silky, shiny, and even straight hair. Since I was 10, I started to be obsessed with black hair care and hair. I researched for the past 10 years on how to grow and take care of black hair. I used gimmicky super growth hair products such as "Doo Gro". It didn't cause a miracle growth for my hair. Every time I searched and collected hair care advices from Sophisticate's Black Hair Styles and Care Guide magazine, various sources from the internet, and I was sub scripted to various "hair care" enthusiasts/gurus on YouTube. Since I bought this book, I de subscripted from over 60 "hair care" enthusiasts/gurus on YouTube. Less few months ago, I bought the Ultra Black Hair Growth 2 2000 edition by Cathy Howse. I like her book, but it wasn't technical enough for me. I recommend you buy and read Ultra Black Hair Growth 2 book first (for a basic concept), then the Science of Black Hair book. The days of searching for adequate black hair care information are over, thanks to Mrs. Davis-Sivasothy. Most of the black hair info I got from these women in magazines, Youtube, or the internet; they were either were over the top & extra with their hair care regimen; they used overly expensive hair care products or secretive with their hair care regimen; they promoted (gimmicky) expensive hair care products (that they made or sponsored by the company), want you pay hundreds of dollars per month to join their hair care thread, or just misleading. Mrs. Davis-Sivasothy addressed 95% of my questions. Thank you, Mrs. Davis-Sivasothy. By the way, I haven't tried the methods or products she recommended yet. My other 5% answers I'm currently searching for great (humidity resistant) alternatives to relaxers. Do blow dryers with diffusers doing what they claim, like reducing the chance of frizz in curly hair? (This info don't have anything, nor I expect this information from Mrs. Davis-Sivasothy)

THE PROS:

She breaks down all the ingredients that you need to know, identify, and look for in hair products. She addressed what to look for in shampoos, conditioners, moisturizers, humectants, proteins, and oils. She breaks down a hair care regimen for everyone and their lifestyles. Whether you a natural, relaxed, texturized, transitioning, colored, or the sew in weave wearer. She covered a hair care regimen for all. She covered a hair care regimen for people who wear cornrows, twists, plaits, braids, locs, and other hair styles. She addressed a hair care regimen for people who exercises, and how to prevent the hair from sweating out if straighten. She addressed a hair care regimen for children and women with gray hair. She mainly focused on the balance of moisture/protein hair care regimen. Both of the moisture hair care regimen and protein regimen is broken down separately. They are listed in their basic of shampoos, conditioners, and moisturizers. You can use either (hair care) regimen depend on your hair porosity. She listed hair friendly gels and other styling products. She addressed protective hair styles. She listed all the product brands that fit every income budget. She addressed what to looked for in combs, hair tools, ceramic flat iron, ponytail holders, towels, and head scarves. She breaks down, how to detangle hair methods. She teaches you, how to stretch a relaxer. She teaches you how to apply a chemical treatment such as relaxer and how to texlax properly. (I find out I was relaxing my hair wrong) She addressed the differences in a salon relaxer and at home relaxer. She breaks down the differences of relaxed, texlaxed, and texturized hair. (Search on Google to see how a texlaxed hair looks like). She addressed a hair care regimen for young children and graying hair. She addressed the rumors regard to mineral oil and petroleum jelly. I LIKED THAT HER BOOK WAS VERY OPEN MINDED & NOT DEGRADING AFRO-TEXTURED HAIR IN ALL NATURAL & CHEMICAL TREATED FORMS.

THE CONS:

The L.O.I.S's hair typing system wasn't in color. I wish she provided full colored head shots photo examples of each distinctive curl pattern and hair textured types. The "L" and "I " descriptions were confusing. She didn't address "Scab hair" or provide photo examples. She didn't address the claims of color preserving hair care products. Do lace wigs or wigs have negative effect on hair? What are the effects of adhesives or glues that are for lace wigs, wigs, or hair weaves? What is consider normal, coarse, dull, oily, and fine on hair labels? She didn't address the rest of what ingredients to avoid in hair care internet rumors (think propylene glycol). Remember the YouTube's videos or hair articles like, "What 10 ingredients to avoid in hair care?" She didn't address can you color over previous colored hair without damage.

All over, I recommend her book, and IT IS A MUST HAVE. I SUGGESTED MY FRIENDS & MY SISTER TO READ IT. IT IS VERY INFORMATIVE. GOOD JOB Mrs. Davis-Sivasothy! You put my journey for searching black hair care to rest.

(You can skip the part below of the review)

This book is the only print media (IMO) demonstrates realistic examples of authentic afro-textured hair and bi-racial textured hair compared to other Medias and magazines.

HERE SOME NOTES REGARD TO HAIR TEXTURES FROM ME ON SCIENCE OF BLACK HAIR BOOK

If you read the L.O.I.S's hair typing system. Remember the curl pattern size can range from small to extra large.

If you are biracial, multiracial, have wavy hair, or curly hair. You might follow under the hair descriptions such as Thready, Spongy, or Silky.

If your hair is afro textured hair, you might follow under the hair descriptions such as Wiry or Cottony.

Remember each person with Thready, Spongy, or Silky. Hair luster (shine) content varies from non to high shine (think Arjuni's hair weaves). Like a Caucasian woman (like with British, Scottish, or Irish background) with straight, wavy, or curly hair, the hair might not be shiny. Hispanics, Latin, Eastern European descendant, Middle Eastern, Native American, or Asian with straight, wavy, or curly hair; might have hair that either low shine to mid shine or luster. An East Indian with straight hair might have hair that has mid shine to high shine. A mixed (with black) person with wavy or curly hair hair varies from no shine to high shine/luster.

Texlaxed and Texturized hair do not look alike. S-Curl perm is a texturizer.

Examples of Salon Relaxed or Straightened Bi-Racial Textured Hair or Curly Hair (without hair extensions)

How I know because my mother has curly hair and she relaxes it. Her hair looks similar to this texture when straighten.

P.S In black hair care ads, most of the models have natural wavy or curly hair. They are usually biracial, multiracial, Caribbean, or South American heritage. They are usually are photo shop, airbrush, bronze (spray tan), or tan in ads to appear more ethnic looking. Their hair is straightened with flat iron and glossing products are used to enhance shine. Digital enhancement are use to enhance hair shine. This advertisement is common in infomercials, Mizani's ads, Profectiv's ads, and Keracare's ads. On relaxer and other hair care ads they use black models with hair wigs, hair weaves, and partial sew ins. The woman on Creme of Nature's Normal Relaxer box, has a kinky straight lace wig that been ceramic flat ironed. How I know? When you part lace wigs, the part looks way thinner in width compared to a normal part on a real scalp. The hairs on the roots of the scalp hair on lace wigs looks narrow than the real scalp. The part on real scalp is wider than the lace closure part, but real part is narrower than an invisible part. On natural hair ads, most of the women have a texturizer or wearing a wig. On hair care ads aim at curly hair. These are not the women natural hair, but they receive a PROFESSIONAL CURLY PERM OR WIG. In HAIR COLOR AD COMMERCIALS, THEY USE WIGS & DIGITAL ENHANCEMENT TO CHANGE THE COLOR OF THE HAIR. ON TEXTURIZER OR S-CURL ADS, THE MEN HAVE A MIXED RACE likes Trinidadian (who have darker skin or who looks more ethnic). They have natural wavy or curly hair; most of the time those are not texturizers or S-Curls. Here is the marketing game on hair advertisements. I HOPE THIS HELPS! How I know? I had been paying attention to ads since 2006. I'm going to college for merchandising, business, and marketing. I'm currently trying to receive my associate of arts degree.

High-intensity home training

High-intensity home trainingI have developed my own weight training regime based partially on some of the techniques suggested by Robert Kennedy, but mostly by using the techniques developed by Dr. Darden. High intensity and super slow are the two most important aspects of putting on muscle mass. In my case, I'm 44 yrs old with a long history of running, soccer, and triathlon sports. Due to a knee injury I decided to turn myself into a weight lifter. In 10 weeks I have gone from a lean (& partially atrophied) 150 lbs post-op from knee surgery to 165 lbs of muscle mass that is all in my chest, back, arms, and one good leg. My waist has stayed constant and 32", but have I got a set of Abs now. Keep in mind I can't do any exercise that involves too much stress on my other knee. Real squats are out. The exercise and gain in muscle mass has helped the injured knee and associated muscles progress at a rapid rate so I do not look unbalanced.

I think those are neat gains and I see myself topping out near or above 170. That weight gain and shape change on me is dramatic.

My problem is that I train at home and while I have put together a pretty good array of equipment there are exercises recommended by both authors that cannot be done at home cheaply or easily. I would like to get and read this book by Dr. Darden on home gyms so that I can determine what improvements I can make in my own set up. PLEASE REPRINT THIS BOOK!

This book is one of 42 published by this author. Personally I have read five of his books, and this one is a good fit for the person tired of the gym scene yet still wants to get a good workout without spending a fortune. Gives you a great program to workout at home and get results without having to use all the fancy equipment of a gym!

The Healthy Home: Simple Truths to Protect Your Family from Hidden Household Dangers

The Healthy Home: Simple Truths to Protect Your Family from Hidden Household DangersThis is an easy to read book that provides excellent advice on a key aspect of preventing illness and premature death. I'm qualified to say that, because despite having an immune deficiency I have not been sick since 1971. Dr. Wentz, Dave Wentz, and Donna K. Wallace are right on target, throughout this book.

This book shows you how to reduce the toxicity of your home to tolerable levels, greatly reducing a long list of risk factors for debilitating and costly illnesses. It touches, also on that tripod of diet, rest, and exercise. The advice it offers is excellent for several reasons:

1. It's accurate. Anyone reading my reviews knows I am brutal toward authors who present fiction as fact, and I often state such dereliction of editorial integrity is the norm. I found no factual errors in this book.

2. It's understandable. Rather than try to impress us with jargon, the authors made their points in plain English.

3. It's interesting. The book presents the information in the context of Ms. Wallace's witnessing Dr. Wentz's inspection of Dave Wentz's home. That real-life approach makes you want to keep reading, because the reader can relate to what's going on.

4. It's practical. Anyone can follow the advice in this book. In some cases, the authors say what's ideal but provide you with less than ideal alternatives for improving your home environment. It's directed at ordinary people who have ordinary incomes and ordinary levels of discipline. You do not have to become a monk to reap the benefits.

5. It's timely. In a nation that just recently endured major legislation allegedly concerned with lowering medical care costs while increasing the overhead involved in medical care and doing zilch in regard to health care, this book helps anyone solve root causes of medical problems. Health care is the key to greatly reducing medical care costs.

Another way this book stands out is there is no fluff. By that, I mean the authors don't waste your time with "advice" that is unlikely to be of any use. Nor do they try to tell us that we need to go back to the stone age or do anything else that is impractical. I'm tempted to provide examples, but I'd rather you read the book for yourself so you can enjoy the wealth of information in it, plus enjoy the health benefits of following what Dr. Wentz advises.

If the federal government actually wanted to reduce medical costs and fix the Medicare cost problem, it would issue a copy of this book to everyone who files a tax return. That small investment would save the public treasury billions of dollars per year, assuming the recipients read this marvelous book and followed even half of its sensible advice.

This book is nicely laid out, with a typeface that's actually large enough for an adult. It seems like a quick read, even though it's packed with information.

It consists of 6 chapters and two epilogues in 250 pages. It contains nice graphics and informative sidebars. Especially helpful are the frequent questionnaires that help the reader grade how well s/he is doing in a particular area. These are short, but illuminating.

I am writing this review about a week after my father died from causes that adherence to this book would have prevented. Sure, buy a copy for yourself and refer to it weekly. But get a copy for someone else, too. The greater the number of people following the advice in this book, the more all of us win.

Dr. Myron Wentz and his son, Dave Wentz (CEO of Usana Health Sciences, Inc.) have collaborated on a great guide to educate families on the hidden dangers inside the home. Dave's life changed with the birth of his first child in 2009, as all of us change when we become parents. That enlightenment confirmed for him the need to look at changing things...not the world, but where we spend the most time...the home.

This book provides facts and studies on the areas where we spend the most time; the bedroom, the bathroom, the office, the kitchen...our homes. The authors reveal small changes every family can make to reduce exposure to toxins and chemicals, and by doing so, to increase their chances of a longer, healthier lifestyle. The information is presented in an easy-to-read, humorous (where appropriate) fashion.

As an eco-friendly interior designer, I constantly keep an eye out for new books in my field. When I saw The Healthy Home: Simple Truths to Protect Your Family from Hidden Household Dangers, I picked it up (at B+N) and read it on the spot.

This is not the first book on this subject, but it is well researched and I had learned a lot. It is written by three authors--doctor Wentz and his son and Donna Wallace, the "listener". It is the the father who provides the unique perspective because he is a cellular doctor and it is through his understanding that we learn how toxic products actually harm and can destroy cells.

The book explains the hidden dangers in the home. The authors believe that indoor air pollution will one day be considered the asbestos of yesteryear.

Beginning in the bedroom, they discuss the common hidden toxins that can harm our health--from pesticides in mattresses, to chemicals in our pajamas to electricity. They also offer simple ans safe solutions.

I love the fact that they tell us to use our noses to help determine what is unhealthy--that a healthy and clean home is one that basically has no smell. They illustrate the dangers of perfume in an experiment with crickets dying from the chemicals that are perfume. And, they compare the dangers to perfume to that of second hand smoke! (As someone who is chemically sensitive, I say, amen! I am just waiting for the fine day that perfume is banned from all public spaces!)

I recommend HARMONIOUS ENVIRONMENT as a companion to this book, as I use it as a reference for my work. I also like books by Michael Pollan on how and what to eat.

This book is clear and easy to read and understand. Recommend.

101 Glam Girl Ways to an Ultra Chic Lifestyle: A Cheeky Book with Tidbits of Advice for a Glamorous

101 Glam Girl Ways to an Ultra Chic Lifestyle: A Cheeky Book with Tidbits of Advice for a Glamorous LifestyleThe title 101 GLAM GIRL WAYS TO AN ULTRA CHIC LIFESTYLE caught my eye, and I opened it up. Dawn Del Russo's online boutique, BellaDawn.com, is cute, so I decided to give the book a chance.

The best part is the charming illustrations of Barbara Ann Scrrillo, the owner of Brushstrokes. They are all in color and all supercute. It makes the book fun to look through, which is useful when some of Del Russo's advice is repetitive or not that insightful.

Tip #34: Send flowers to yourself.

Tip #65: Fresh cut flowers.

Tip #23: Wear deodorant. (Flavor text: Do we even have to give an explanation for this one?)

The redundant and overly simple tips annoy me, because there are some helpful and inventive tips. Del Russo advocates short meditation, which I've always found helpful. (I'm less stressed, my mood is more balanced, and it's absolutely perfect before you go to sleep if you've been having trouble reaching la-la land.) She also points out where it is best to splurge diamond studs, a nice pair of pumps, a nice black dress, and a watch. Those few designer/expensive pieces can be picked out carefully, and make the rest of your wardrobe look classier. (Plus, as Del Russo advocates, a tailor can also work wonders.)

However, even the good advice seems to breezily presented. The flavor text beneath each illustration offers some insight, but I'm the kind of person who likes to keep asking, "Why?" until I get a really good explanation. I would've preferred a book with fewer tips and more prose illustrating how to integrate the tips into your life, especially if you do need your glam girl lifestyle to be affordable.

My final verdict? 101 GLAM GIRL WAYS TO AN ULTRA CHIC LIFESTYLE is cute and fun to flip through, but it probably won't make a difference to your lifestyle unless you're a total beauty neophyte. The advice is a bit too practical and simplistic.

From In Bed With Books

This little book on glam girl fashion is as indispensible as every woman's little black dress. The book is a palm-ful (at just over one hundred pages), and easily read in a few minutes. Each tip is carefully highlighted with colorful illustrations and fun sayings, which offer reminders on how to become glamorous.

I imagine that the author and illustrator have the idea to remind all women that easy glamour is well within everyone's reach. This is true on every level, although our stressful lives certainly don't help our cause to remaining beautiful, within our harried schedules. Although the tips offered in the book are deceptively simple, I did feel that they were all useful reminders on ways to enrich and refresh my spirit. To that end, the smallest positive effort can significantly increase and improve the value and quality of my otherwise impossibly busy life. And everyone can use a reminder that she is worth putting herself first, right?

This is a cute little book, and would make a great gift to give to a glam girl of any age.

In this publication, Del Russo (Fashion Merchandising and Design, Parsons School of Design, 2002; B.S., Business Management, Wagner College, 2001; contributing fashion writer for select online magazines), an up-and-coming fashion stylist and founding owner of a successful, storefront and online, clothing and accessory boutique Bella Dawn (), with the assistance of Scarrillo (Fashion Institute of Technology; Owner, Brushstrokes), a graphic designer from New York City with over twenty years experience, provides a pocket-sized, guide book for women, who may be searching for budget friendly glamour and quick, easy ways to go beyond their everyday fashion, beauty, and/or lifestyle routines. By means of 101 tips, each of which is boldly-presented and colorfully-illustrated on a separate page, the author sets forth practical and realistic advice that may have financial consequences. Covering clothing, jewelry, accessories, cosmetics, hair, personal hygiene, self-presentation, health, body, mind, work, home, travel, entertainment, and more, Del Russo focuses on outward and inward aspects of glamour, thereby broadening the scope of the subject and suggesting that there is more to the topic. For the author, glamour is more than skin deep. It goes beyond appearances and constitutes a mindset and way of life. While many of Del Russo's recommendations may relate partly to sociallyand culturally-accepted standards of decorum and fashion--ex. Tip #23 Wear deodorant ... (p. 31)--and others are not new but rather longstanding and true--ex. Tip #13 Find a little black, "`must-have"' dress ...(p. 21)--most if not all her "tidbits" are original, to the extent that they combine fashion, beauty, and/or lifestyle tips into unique statements. For example, on the subject of shoes, in Tip #42, Del Russo proclaims, "Slip into a pair of designer pumps. ... Every girl should own at least one pair, right?" Yes, true, probably every "girl" or woman should own a pair of pumps, a well-known, widely-disseminated fashion principle. Del Russo further implies by the wording of Tip #42 that if you can not afford to own more than one pair of pumps, than at least buy a designer brand. The author believes quality matters and it usually is an excellent indicator of beauty and style, although not the only factor. For all women, but particularly for younger, single women, who may be "home alone on a Friday night" and more able to "dress red carpet style" (Tip #69, p.77), without a husband and/or children around, this well-presented, nicely-illustrated, unique, delightful, easy-to-read book serves as a useful, fun, beauty guide. While it is not comprehensive, it may serve as a good, first start for many women, who may need a little fashion, beauty, and/or lifestyle help to move beyond the everyday. A great personal gift, it also belongs in some public libraries as a complimentary, fashion, beauty, and/or lifestyle resource as well as an enjoyable read. Recommended-C. A.
