Balance Your Hormones, Balance Your Life: Achieving Optimal Health and Wellness through Ayurveda, Ch

Balance Your Hormones, Balance Your Life: Achieving Optimal Health and Wellness through Ayurveda, Chinese Medicine, and Western ScienceI enjoyed this book it immensely. It is written in a very down to earth style, but with an abundance of knowledge and experience in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine. The identification and purpose of the hormones and how they work is explained very clearly. Lifestyle, diet, and stress management are reinforced as the way in which we can jumpstart our ways out of feeling 'crummy'.

> This book not only reinforced my faith in taking charge of our healing, but brought to light that it is OK to SLOW down and not fear looking weak or 'on task' at all times.

> This book has helped me to regain confidence in myself as the Self. I now understand the need for my yin to be nourished.

It will touch the hearts of many women.

The book is 305 pages full of abundant and scientifically sound information. Her writing and teaching brings invaluable information to the reader in an easy to follow and witty form. I have enjoyed this book so much that the studio has made it required reading for our Yoga and Ayurveda Therapy Teacher Training 300-hour, 750-hour and 1,000-hour.

I have been recommending this book to my private clients. The ones who have read it have gained a better understanding of Ayurveda and because of this they were able to take more control and responsibility over their healing process. I have found that most people are more willing to implement a change if they know that there is science behind it. This book enables me to easily show people the science behind Ayurveda and Chinese medicine.

Furthermore, "Balance Your Hormones, Balance Your Life" not only covers the meeting ground of Eastern and Western medicine, it also explains a lot of myths and misconceptions that have been polluting both systems. Dr. Claudia Welch has been able to identify how the term "statistics" can be misleading when it comes to the Western medicine and how "folklore" can be falsely passed as Eastern medicine.

There is so much knowledge in this book that, dare I say, after a layman studies it, they will understand and know more than some ayurvedic practitioners that I have met.

I recommend this book to every one that wants to learn more about Ayurveda, Chinese medicince, or simply aspires to becoming and staying healthy.

Thank you Claudia for the gift of this book!

Whether you have questions and concerns about your own hormonal balance or not, Dr. Claudia Welch's book is fascinating. I read the sections on fertility and conception with just as much interest and pleasure as the sections which applied to my life now, namely menopause. She presents a wealth of information, clearly laid out and accessible in spite of being a very complex subject. And she offers the reader the best of all three worlds; Ayurveda, Chinese medicine, and Western science, skillfully woven together.

Highly recommended to women of any age, as well as to the men in their lives.

I carry this book around with me, reading chapters and underlining passages and exclaiming to myself, "Ah-hah! I get it! Where's my high-lighter..."

Now, when I am out of whack I repeat the mantra of Diet, Lifestyle, Stress Management and ask myself which part needs adjusting today?

There's a great intellect and thoroughly kind intent at work in this book and both supported me in doing what I needed to do to calm down my own heart (which three months ago used to gallup all night long) so I could get back to sleep, count on a regular heartbeat, and bring a better semblance of calm to my life. I had to change a major child-rearing technique, and edit my daily "do-or-die" creed in order to prioritize my health. I quit a job. I slowed my life down to a steady trot. And I owe my growing calm and healthier pace to paying attention to the wisdom in these pages.

Still, it's for me a very new way of approaching life decisions, and I have things to calm down yet. I go back to the book for courage and understanding. It's great company, and feels like a wise friend.

Thank you Dr. Welch for writing this phenomenally researched, comprehensive, kind, good-humored book for me and all my sisters.

I really loved this book. I was diagnosed with adrenal fatigue when a friend of mine first told me about it. I feel like I learned so much about women's health and nutrition that I would recommend this book to every woman. Mainly it talks about the importance of natural, whole foods to treat hormone imbalance which is, you'll find out, common in our culture, due to chemicals commonly used on our foods, and on (or in) every-day household items. It also reveals some of the recent findings on hormone replacement therapies, women's health issues, and gives advice how to use food as medicine and place an emphasis on Quality of Life as opposed to More = Better mentality.)

I had heard the terms Kapha, Pitta, and Vata (=describes your health constitution) in Ayurveda(=ancient medicine from India) from Perfect Digestion, by Deepak Chopra, but I didn't realize how this simple system resonated with me until I read this book. I have suffered from adrenal fatigue for so long without knowing it, mood swings, and digestive illness for the past three years and wanted a long-term solution rather than quick-fix drugs that my regular doctor was prescribing that would help me temporarily, but have long-lasting, irreversable, side-effects! After having read this book, continuing my Yoga practice, finding a natural doctor, and incorperating the warm-oil massage, described in this book, I have recovered from digestive illness, am healthy and feel good!

It is difficult to find an Ayurvedic doctor, if you need one, but the book has tons of resources. I compromised and found a Naturopath in my area, who has a practice 45 min. away rather than 2 hrs. or more away.

For all that are getting this book--Yay! I think you'll learn a lot!

To your health!

The 36-Hour Day : A Family Guide to Caring for Persons With Alzheimer Disease, Related Dementing Ill

The 36-Hour Day : A Family Guide to Caring for Persons With Alzheimer Disease, Related Dementing Illnesses, and Memory Loss in Later LifeAnyone caring for someone with Alzheimer's Disease, other diseases of dementia, or severe memory loss disorders, know just how difficult and consuming it is to care for someone you love. Whether you're a family member, caring for a loved one, or any of a number of healthcare providers, "The 36-Hour Day" is an absolute must-read for all. Put simply, it is a true necessity for anyone involved in the care giving process of dementia-type disorders.

My 73 year old Father was diagnosed, about 8 years ago, with a "memory problem", by his family practitioner in New York. It was far more than simple memory loss, not unusual for someone his age, and the past 4 years of my life have been dedicated to his total care. As much as I love my Father, the demands of caring for someone with Alzheimer's Disease has literally taken over my entire life and in every imaginable way. It is exhausting, depressing, frustrating, demanding and progressively gets worse. And, yes, there have been many special moments that I will treasure forever. I saw a side of my Dad, at times, that was much more loving and compassionate than I ever knew him to be. We played music, talked about old times, watched old movies and tried to harness ourselves into anything and everything that would build his confidence.

The bottom line, however, is that Alzheimer's is a disease that affects the entire family unit. And it's not uncommon for a caregiver to place his/her needs on the back burner, often to a point where they neglect themselves so badly that they become too ill to provide care for their loved on. Families have been torn apart, marriages have ended and friendships neglected that they dissolved. I've also seen people come together in ways that were miraculous. It is so necessary to take care of the caregivers, to offer them respite and to educate family members so they will have the tools to make it through the toughest of times. And, finally, one book does it all.

I believe that reading "The 36-Hour Day" is the first step in understanding Alzheimer's Disease, along with other dementia-type illnesses, and one of the most important and necessary steps a caregiver can take to prepare themselves for the very long road ahead. My friends who are reading this review, this is a very long journey that will require so much of your time, energy, compassion, passion and love. The best advice I can give you is to provide a pathway that will allow you to better understand what lies before you. There is no need to go this road alone. Support is necessary and so is reading literature and books that help you in order that you may help someone else. "The 36-Hour Day" is outstanding and comprehensive in every respect. If I were a wealthy person, I'd supply a copy to anyone who needed one.

Even though I am with him 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and provide all of his care, just this morning he asked me who I was. I reassured him, as I always do, and told him that I was his child, that my name is Peter and that he need not ever worry or get frustrated over trying to remember me or anyone else. Although it kills me inside, to hear this day after day and to see him continually get worse, my job is to remain strong and not take anything personal. None of this is his fault and nowhere, other than in this book, will you ever find the sort of comprehensive guide to caring for someone like my Dad. These memory disorders are far more devastating than the public and the healthcare world can comprehend.

Alzheimer's Disease is not merely forgetting where the car keys were placed or forgetting the name of a neighbor that you might see twice a year. Alzheimer's dementia is about losing everything it is that ever made you who you are. It is about having your rights to drive, and other similar freedoms, taken away. It is about losing your total privacy and needing the assistance of a caregiver to help with cooking or paying bills. Safety becomes the main concern of those who love and care for someone with dementia. It is more than just forgetting ingredients to recipes or the names of famous baseball players. Eventually, it will become more difficult and painful for the caregivers than the suffering patient. And my deep concern is for the caregivers who are still living and have a good life ahead. If our loved ones could speak, they would thank us for everything we have done and ask that we move forward with our lives.

I hope this has helped, even just a little bit. Bless all of you for taking the time to read this. You have my contact information below and feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss this book or even if you just need someone to chat with. The book will teach you the importance of reaching out to others. My hand is waiting to grasp onto yours.

My Sincere Warmth and Regards

A truly remarkable book. It is well written, and very easy to read and follow, providing a background in this disease and what can/will happen to those afflicted. Providing extremely helpful insights and strategies for those of us who are caregivers, spouses, sons, daughters, and other family and friends. Personally, this book helped me to understand what was happening to my mother, helped me to be more understanding and less frustrated and annoyed with her. This book provides a great deal of insight and allows the reader to get a "feel" for the current situation and possible future situations. I have recommended this book to my personal physician to pass along to her other patients who may be in the same position as I am.

this book was published about 5 years ago. at that time, it was up to date. while much of the neuroimagining and neuroscience has changed during that time, frankly, little has changed in how we protect, communicate with, comfort, love our loved ones or how we take care of ourselves. this book is longer than most. i like that. it gives background information, discusses alternatives with pros and cons, whereas some of the shorter alzheimer books are written more like a physician's pocket resource guide. this is an excellent book. it is one that i have recommended and loaned out to patients' families dozens of times. i always hear the same thing the book is an invaluable resource. my hope is that nancy mace updates it again soon! this book is well worth the price, new, and perhaps more (did i really say that?)

This review is not about the quatity of the book. So far I find it to be full of excellent advise and information.

THIS IS AN OLD EDITION! I was shocked to discover a third edition in a book store last night. The latest edition contains updated information about current treatments, the latest financial information and nursing home legislation.

So buy the book but get the third edition. It is paperback and has different cover.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Making Natural Beauty Products

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Making Natural Beauty ProductsI have seen several Natural Beauty Product Recipe Books on the market, but this is by far the best. This book is easy, comprehensive and packed with information for the novice or seasoned bodycare product maker. This book covers several different topics and areas of making natural body products.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Making Natural Beauty Products teaches you how to make products from scratch for your hair, face, body, feet and it even covers the subject on how to make mineral make up, lip balms and glosses.

This book has a wealth of information from the types of oils, butters and additives to use. The book also covers the subject of labeling cosmetics for sale, which is vital in the cosmetic making industry. I think this book is a must have. If you're thinking about getting this book, you won't be dissappointed, I guarantee you. Also don't forget to pick up a copy of "The Idiot's Guide for Making Natural Soaps."

This is a great book. It has so much for the beginner up to the advanced user. I do feel that it lacks recipes for colored women in foundations and such however in all other ways this book is a wealth of great information and recipes. I would give it 98 stars out of 100 stars...

This is by far the best book on cosmetic making that I have read. I was looking for a 'natural' way of making my own cosmetics that had shelf life just in case I wanted to start selling the product. I can't wait to order my supplies. I have been making cosmetics of natural skin care for many years and this is the best book I stumbled upon. And now there is a company that has a complete kit that goes with this book. Thanks for a great, easy to follow, complete cosmetic DIY.

I made a couple of the skin care recipes and most of them did not work as written. The cold cream recipe did not work as written, it was solid and had way to much wax in it and not enought oil it was a mess. Other recipies that I made were similar disappointments, and I am not new to making skin care products.

BEWARE: some of the ingredients in some of the recipes are no longer available, so some of the recipes are no good as written. The supplier who used to sell POP Micas doesn't carry them, and they don't have a good subsitute for them (last I looked) so a lot of the recipies you can't use as written for the make-up.

Don't waste your money on this book do research on the internet for better and more relevant recipes.

I won;t repeat all of the glowing and positive comments that have already been written but suffice to say I concur wholeheartedly.

I do wish to make comments about two of the recipes that really changed my skin and face -dramatically.

I suffer from a condition that causes me to have dry, rough skin and living in a dry arid area with the recent heat waves just made matters worse. That was until I decided to try making my own products. After several disasters with recipes from online and a few books I stumbled upon The Idiots Guide and I just can't say enoug good things about it.

The Thick and Luscious Body Butter has transformed my dry skin into soft and supple skin that almost feels dewy it is so moist. There is a slightly oil feel immediately after application but this quickly absorbs into the skin. I use it in the mornings and after my evenin showers and look forward to how soft my skin feels after application.

I was very, very reluctant to try any of the facial recipes as 99% of the time I get rashes, irritation and major clogged pores from darn near every brand of face creams whether they be cheap, expensive or used as part of a spa facial. But I was so pleased with the Body Butter and it was so easy to make I figured I would give it a try.

I decided to try the Extreme Facial Creme as it was recommended for dryest of skins which is what I have as I have been unable to find a proper facial creme for years now. For the first time ever my facial skin is normal and actaully very soft and smooth. Not once did I break out or get a rash like I usually do from over the counter or spa caliber cremes. I realized later that I had used too much of the oils but despite this fact I didn't break out with tons of clogged pores and that is because, I believe, the oils the recipe calls for are some of the finest and best suited for skin care.

Whether you are a fan or natural products or not (I was not particulary inclined towards natural I just wanted something that finally worked!) this book is for you. I had horrible skin and now I don't. I am a horrible cook but the recipes were easy to follow and the ingredients all available here on amazaon. I will never use anything on my face and body skin other than the two recipes I have gotten from this book the work and work well. I look forward to trying other recipes but if I don't these 2 recipes alone are worth the price of the bbook.

The PDR Family Guide Encyclopedia of Medical Care: The Complete Home Reference to Over 350 Medical P

The PDR Family Guide Encyclopedia of Medical Care: The Complete Home Reference to Over 350 Medical Problems and Procedures from the Publishers of The Physicians' Desk Reference®this book covers a wide array of common medical problems and issues. It is easy to understand and easy to find what you need.It has step by step instructions, warnings, questions to ask Dr, and recommendations on hundreds of conditions and is a must for every household. There is also a handy "signs and symptoms index " that tells you what may be wrong.

I can't believe this book is 15 years-old. I just consulted it for a family member and realized while raving about how helpful a book it is that I never posted a review. It deserves 5 stars. Both my husband and I are self-employed and have very basic (read that very crappy) health benefits. So this book has saved us literally hundreds of dollars over the years. Although I can't always find what I need on the first try, I've found that the problem and solution are generally in there. (A lot of ailments are under "Pain" rather than alphabetical, so start there if you can't find what you're seeking.) It lists symptoms, causes, treatment options and most importantly, when to see the doctor. A real time and money-saver thank you Three Rivers Press!
