Yoga Natural Fitness For Body and Spirit.

Yoga Natural Fitness For Body and Spirit.I received this book as part of a gift package from the Body Shop, and I wasn't expecting much. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that this is an extremely well-thought out book appropriate for beginners to more advanced levels. The book begins by reviewing some of the basic tenats of yoga, including the importance of breathing as well as the purpose of the healing chakras located throughout the body. It then goes on to introduce the sun salutation series, a basic series of poses which forms the foundation of most practices.

Following this, the book is divided into approximately 20 chapters, with each chapter containing instructions for approximately 4-5 poses centered around a particular theme. For example, the "Renewal" practice is a series of poses which can be done at your desk to restore your energy while you are at work, the "Stability" practice focuses on back exercises to strengthen your midsection--other themes include waking up in the morning, warming up prior to a workout, attaining calm, increasing concentration and mental focus, strengthening your muscles, and many more.

Each series takes approximately 10 minutes to complete, so they can be done in isolation or mixed and matched to form a custom practice. All of the poses in the book are at a beginning level, but most have both modifications and more advanced versions. Furthermore, the bottom of each section includes tips on breathing, meditation, and/or general wellness. I have really enjoyed this book, expecially given that it has helped me to incorporate more yoga into my fitness routine.

This is the best yoga book I have ever seen. Beautiful design, clear and honest writing. I've seen guests in my house -with no yoga experience -pick it up and before long they're on the floor doing the Downward Dog.

The Fit for Life Solution

The Fit for Life SolutionIf you are at all interested in learning how to have complete and total control of your own health and how to confidently and easily live a sickness, pain and disease free life this book is definitely for you. In a climate of ever increasing statistics of disease and ill-health the clear and simple ideas of this book are nothing short of a Godsend. Since the medical profession, the single biggest industry in this country, makes the enormous amount of money that it does by the population being and remaining sick and full of disease they would have us believe that living a healthy disease free life is totally beyond our control. Well, thanks to the brilliant, yet extremely simple methods put forth by this author, the reader is able to take his/her health back into their own hands and truly live without sickness pain or worry of most, if not all diseases. The information in this book is as simple and easy to understand as it is groundbreaking. This book could and should change the world and the way people view cancer, sickness, pain and other diseases. The author explains in remarkably common sense and simple terms exactly how to take total control of your health, vitality and weight by using your body's lymph system (which the author explains is the body's garbage collector). He clearly points out that like a car, our body is a machine, a complex living machine and that after a while due to residue of foods we eat, toxins, chemicals and pollutants in foods, spent cellular material, and other wastes our bodies become "silted up" and require an "oil change" so to speak just like our cars do, otherwise sickness plagues us and disease begins to form. Not only is the information in the book groundbreaking and life changing, but the author, Harvey Diamond, who is known for his humorous and entertaining writing style, delights and entertains the reader with a book that I could not put down until I found myself finishing the last page. I recommend this book to absolutely everyone who can read and who desires to be healthy, energetic and disease free and truly feel this book could turn around the entire cancer and disease epidemic in this country and put the power of your own health back into people's own hands where it belongs! Not reading this book is just like turning your back on a pile of gold the size of a mountain. Thank you Harvey Diamond!

This is a great book with Harvey at times unleashing his full venom at the medical profession, food industry and fellow dieticians. He is speaking up for the truth and I happen to believe him. Why? Because I have tested and followed the Fit for Life principles myself and they work.

However before reading this book (which I call Fit for Life III), I would advise buying and following the principles laid out in the first two books i.e. Fit for Life and Fit for Life II. They are easier to read, gentler (probably because they were written in partnership with Marilyn!) and cover the essential dietary/lifestyle principles you need to follow.

This book contains exactly the same text word for word as Fit for Life: A New Beginning (apart from the cover is different and the book is physically bigger), so if you want to save yourself some money I would buy that one instead. I would have rated the book 5 stars, if it was not for this point.

this is a really good book. his original fit for life book also has some very good info in it, the diet regimen part of it less so in my opinion. but here he puts it all together, and focuses primarily on the link between diet and disease, using cancer as his main example. it has the feel of a great debunking text, as in, here is the fundamental and unassailable link between diet and health, the food we eat and the illness and disease that follow -a basic truth that the AMA, FDA and pharmaceutical companies prefer you not see, as they pour billions of dollars of dollars into ads and countless propaganda. and then he shows, like john robbins' diet for a new america, that the paradigm of destruction of the S.A.D. (sad or standard american diet) extends not only to our health but also to pollution and ecological damage on a grand scale. the type of book you should read and then send copies to your friends. cheers, jg

This book is well written and very easy to read. It doesn't overload you with so much information you won't remember it. Instead, it lays out the information so you will absorb it. Harvey speaks a lot from his personal experience as well describing his personal struggle with weight from early on as well as from researched information. The book is full of information that is a great start to anyone looking for a healthier lifestyle over all.

The Nursing Home Handbook: A Guide to Living Well

The Nursing Home Handbook: A Guide to Living WellRuth Davis writes with humor and great practicality on a topic that I find uncomfortable and somewhat overwhelming. She provides information on all aspects of nursing home care --from finding the right setting, to coping with details of day to day life in a home, to the last moments. I love her use of sidebars, little snippits of advice, often filled with humor and always packed with common sense. I would recommend this book to anyone facing the problem of long term care for self or loved one.

The Nursing Home Handbook is thorough and well written. It answered nearly all my questions and many I never thought of. My remaining questions are: Which are the best places? Are they easily accessible? How much do they cost? I still have to do research, but this book provides criteria by which to judge.

I recommend this book for anyone who needs help choosing a nursing home or dealing with one already chosen. It may also help you decide, as I did, that a nursing home is not the right choice at this time.

This book is a quick read, but is stuffed full of good information and practical tidbits. I read it in just a few hours and learned a tremendous lot. I especially liked the boxed text in the margins with interesting little factoids and suggestions.

For instance, when I asked to read my loved one's medical chart I was told, "okay, but hurry. I don't want anyone to see that I'm letting you do this." In Davis' book, she states that we have a legal right to read our own medical charts. Her book is full of this type of "been there, done that" advice.

The next to last chapter, which gives some information on hospice and practical advice on how to sit by the bedside when it's time for your loved one to leave this world, was very well written and is alone worth the price of this book.

I've read many of these books and this is one of the few that I'd highly recommend.

When Someone You Love Has a Mental Illness

When Someone You Love Has a Mental IllnessThis book contains what so many mental health books lack: advice. The majority of books on mental health offer a medical or personal description of various mental health conditions. This book tells someone who loves or cares for a mentally ill friend or relative how to help and handle them.

It covers the basics of how to approach and talk to someone who may not be behaving or thinking rationally at the time, to how to work with insurance companies and locate help.

I have purchased dozens of books in my quest to help a loved one. While the majority have been useful, this is the one I wish I read first. If you need help understanding and working with mental illness, this book is a great starting point.

This book is excellent for people with relatives or friends who have severe mental illnesses, requiring occasional (or frequent) hospitalization and so on. It is a good resource in that it gives advice and tips for coping with various situations that absoultely will come up when you have a relationship with a mentally ill person. It is practical, there is no hypothesizing about what causes what, no blaming the family, very little "psychobabble." It's almost a how-to manual. It offers some insight into what the mentally ill person experiences, which is helpful to the family who may be frustrated and overwhelmed and very tired of trying to understand.

But it does not offer much for spouses in a relationship with a person with mental illness. Nor does it extend easily to the family and friends of somebody who has a mental illness or brain disorder who is as functional as the "average" person most of the time, but has frequent, incapacitating mood and perceptual problems.

If your loved one has a mental illness which is not so severe as to require hospitalization freqently, or a large degree of psychiatric intervention, this book will provide you with soem understanding, but not as much practical help as it will for people facing more severe problems.

This book is wonderful. If you are dealing with a family member who has a mental illness (particularly severe schizophrenia), you will find answers and helpful advice throughout this book. The first few chapters provide insight into the illness and it's especially readable because Woolis doesn't get overly medical. She provides enough information for you to understand about the illness and why your relative may have it. The book is chock-full of useful advice, and we have tried many of her suggestions (with success) already. She walks you through ways to talk to your family member during `episodes,` how to get them to perform basic tasks, how to ask them to take meds, and so on. There is advice for almost every situation. And, the best part is that Woolis treats the illness with respect, and encourages us to do the same throughout the entire book. I really felt that her advice is from the heart, and meant to help us. There is a section on how we need to focus on ourselves too, and that was particularly helpful. The book is very user-friendly, and can be read cover to cover or in sections. Many of the sections answer the questions most family members have, and offer concrete and realistic ways in which to handle the bizarre requests and behaviors that accompany mental illness. Everyone in our family has a copy that gets a lot of use. Highly recommended.

When my son was disgnosed with a mental illness I started to look for books and literature that help me to understand what was going on, and how could I deal with it. Also, to learn about what to expect in terms of behaviors that I haven't seen in him yet, etc. I found several books that were very good in terms of describing mental illness from the medical point of view, but none of them would say much about the patients as people interacting with relatives or friends. In addtion to that, is common to find description of very extreme and severe cases whose profile may not necessarily match yours. This book is easy-to-read and its content is excellent. It has all the practical information you need to know, and you need to be aware of. Even though it doesn't not go very in depth, the information provided comes from a valid and experienced source who has work and done research about mental illness, so things are explained along with the "reason why" they happened that way and not in other, and why they fit in the profile of mental illness. This book helps people to learn the best ways to deal, act and react to a person who suffers from it in a way that both, patient and family, can reduce the stress and find harmony living together. EXCELLENT

This book was extremely helpful to our family. Make sure you get a copy of the 2003 revised edition. I was first sent one that had the older edition (with 232 pages) even though the cover said, "revised and expanded". The revised edition has 308 pages. Amazon/B & N, or the publisher will send you a new one if you return it. The book is well worth reading. It has so much practical advise. We are now able to talk with our son again, which we've hardly been able to do since he got sick.

Leboeuf's Home Health Care Handbook: All You Need to Become a Caregiver in Your Home

Leboeuf's Home Health Care Handbook: All You Need to Become a Caregiver in Your HomeThis book is a "must", for anyone in the home health care position.Professionals, family members, friends, and care-givers can all benefit. The information that it provides is priceless. I'd been a care-provider for my disabled daughter, for many years, before I found it;and it helped me tremendously. I am still refering to this book, now and probably always will be! What impressed me the most was the "800" #, that you can call, for any help that the book does not give you! How many authors give you a # to call them at? This is so important because every case is so different.Often what helps one person, does not necessarily help another. Also, when you have a loved one that is ill;you are very busy, and it is impossible to find out all the information you need. This book wraps it all into one source. I commend the author!

At Home in the Land of Oz: Autism, My Sister, and Me

At Home in the Land of Oz: Autism, My Sister, and MeAnne Clinard Barnhill, born in 1952 relates the story of her life as sister to Becky, who was born 1/31/58. Becky displayed autistic behavior almost from infancy. She became continent at 4; was marginally verbal for the first few years of her life; communicated by phrasing her statements as questions, e.g. "Does the Becky want to eat? Why can't the Becky learn at home?" Anne, 6 years her sister's senior took Becky under her wing and was lovingly protective of her. She even spent her summers working with Becky on cognitive skills.

Sadly, precious little was known about autism in those days. Becky was erroneously labled as "emotionally disturbed" and even retarded. Sadly, this was not uncommon back then. Becky's schooling was also a problem in 1965, she was expelled for disruptive behavior from one special needs class in West Virginia and saw a therapist. One group home refused to take her until she became fully self-sufficient in toileting. Although continent and reliable, Becky still needed help cleaning up. Once she mastered that skill, Pressley House, a group home/school was willing to accept her after placing her on a waiting list.

On October 1, 1966 the Clinards took Becky to Amos Cottage, which was an interim placement. Becky served 9 months in Amos Cottage which sounded like a genuine hellhole. Nurses ran the place and the lowest functioning children were kept in crib-cages with bars across the top. Becky talked of the "water babies in the basement," which sounded like she meant children with hydrocephalus. She was able to describe Amos Cottage, which sounded horrible. The Clinards were horrified by the place as anyone would be, but sadly there was no other place forthcoming for Becky.

In June of 1967 after a nearly 9-month sentence in Amos House, Becky enjoyed the annual family camping trip; had fun dodging her sister and sneaking off to the pool which was verboten and in general loving the outdoors. Despite many of her unexplainable behaviors, Anne remains loving and tolerant of Becky. I like that.

Becky's behavior remains severely autistic. She pulls dolls apart until they are limbless and headless; she flips any object in her path and she gives her sister the nickname "Jet," explaining that she thinks Anne's face is jet-plane shaped. (Kind of makes you think of Paul McCartney & Wings' song, "Jet.")

Anne talks about her own milestones; her love of the Beatles whom she discovered in late 1963; her boyfriends; her schools; her crushes; her peers and how they all related to Becky. I like the way she describes her response to the events of the day, e.g. Viet Nam War (she had classmates and friends who were drafted); hippies and the music and the family Ford Galaxie, a singularly cool car. One funny story involves how Anne and her friends got stuck in that Ford and rescued it, with great music from 1968 as the soundtrack.

Anne introduces readers to her family. Readers are treated to both sets of grandparents, aunts and cousins as well. One of my favorite parts was when the girls' mother would sing Beatle songs and emphasize the "yeah, yeah, yeah" chorus in the 1963 classic, "She Loves You." It just goes to show you that nobody could dodge that Beatle influence! Becky's classmates wanted her to choose Beatle songs for her ballet recital. The Beatles remain a comforting presence throughout the book.

Despite their vastly different needs and personalities, the sisters really do, as the Beatles said, "Come Together." Readers get to follow Anne down her growing up years and experience into adulthood; at the same time readers follow Becky's progress as well. Becky weathers some major storms, including abuse at a group home when she was 9-11.

Becky's sentence at Pressley House ended in 1971. Then 13, she went onto a special program at the local high school and secured a diploma in 1979 for merely attending. She worked at area sheltered workshops before she entered a group home in 1990 at age 32.

Readers get to cheer Anne's successes as well; a successful second marriage; a blessing of 3 sons; her degrees and her courage and candor in sharing her life and that of her immediate family. Readers are encouraged by Becky's progress as well. Their story has helped lift the Dark Curtain of the Dark Ages that acted as a barrier towards appropriate placement and diagnosis for people with autism. Sadly, few options existed in those days.

In addition to the Beatle parts which I readily identified with and understood, I like the way Anne Clinard Hill opens each chapter with a passage from "The Wizard of Oz." This classic is one she and Becky have loved over the decades and do to this day.

This book makes me think of the song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" from "The Wizard of Oz." Readers cannot help but think that in time the Path to Acceptance and recognition of autism is closer than over that rainbow and is tangible, not illusive. I am one of the people who thinks that. I like the way Becky accepts herself as well and I think this is one of the best books I have ever read about a sibling who has autism.

This book explores the often unnoticed side of being a so-called 'normal' (or 'neurotypical') person who loves someone with a mental disorder, namely autism. I found this memoir refreshing in the way that it unapologetically gives voice to those of us on the other side of the coin--those of us who have done our best to stretch our love outside of the box by often putting our own needs on hold to be good family. This book will especially appeal to baby boomers who have grown up with autistic siblings during a time when the disorder was still unnamed, as it addresses the historically inaccurate 'parental blame' theory of the disorder's etiology. I would recommend this book to anyone who has been touched by someone with a mental disorder, and anyone who considers themselves an advocate for the mentally ill.

Buy At Home in the Land of Oz: Autism, My Sister, and Me Now

In this poignant memoir, Anne Barnhill explores the importance of home and family. Despite living with a sister who is considered to be "different" by society, the author reveals how she and her family grew closer through caring for and mentoring "different" Becky. As society dictated at the time (during the 1960's), at first the autistic little girl was put away in a home, as her sister watched and cried. Later, fortunately, Becky, came home again. She didn't need the aid of chicking her heels. The love of family gave her the rainbow she needed.

In the author's lyrical account, the Barnhill family learns to value Becky for herself, rejoicing in her accomplishments. The possibilities for Becky, as well as others with autism, are now limitless.

Everyone with a family member who is considered "different" should read this lyrical tale. The lesson here is that loving someone "different" touches the heart in new and extraordinary ways. Once you complete this fine book, filled with humor and pathos, you'll become a fan of author Barnhill and root for her sister Becky.

Read Best Reviews of At Home in the Land of Oz: Autism, My Sister, and Me Here

Anne Barnhill's memoir, At Home in the Land of Oz, deserves far more press than it has received. The book describes in unusual detail the trials, tribulations and warm, loving times that her family experienced as they helped to understand her unusual sister. Only in recent years was an accurate diagnosis of autism given. Saddled with the feeling that somehow they weren't doing enough for their "emotionally disturbed" daughter, Anne describes how the family adjusted, worked, and strived to help her sister be normal. At times embarrassed by inappropriate behavior and at other times protective and outraged at inappropriate reactions to her sister from others, Anne tells us how she always wanted a family that was "just normal." The underlying question evolves, just what is "normal" after all. I give this book five stars and recommend it highly, not only to families struggling with members who live outside the boundaries of acceptable behavior, but for those of us who want to understand how we can be better neighbors.

Want At Home in the Land of Oz: Autism, My Sister, and Me Discount?

This memoir of a sister of an autistic is a good read for anyone touched in anyway by autism or by a family member with differences. Anne Barnhill's sister was born in the 50's when autism was a mysterious ailment and families were left to flounder helplessly. The author's perspective of growing up with a sister who was so "different" touched my heart. She is ruthlessly honest about her moments of wanting to belong with the cool kids at school and having to cope with them finding out or seeing her sister with her odd way of talking and hand-flipping. Her anguish when her sister had "melt-downs" in public can be felt by everyone. The parts of the memoir where the author believes she herself might start doing odd things is something seen in families of anyone with a so-called mental problem. And the quotes from letters her proud father wrote trying to get public financial support when her sister needed to be in an institution for training are heart-breaking. But the most touching parts are when the author realizes that her love for her sister triumphs over everything else. Her sister is currently in an adult program and doing well. I can recommend this book as a read for families with autism or mental illness.

Advanced Marathoning - 2nd Edition

Advanced Marathoning - 2nd EditionHaving logged a few marathons under my belt, I found a lot of programs and books out there were focused on the largest crowd. Those either wanting to complete a marathon, or those running less than 50 miles per week. But what I really wanted was a book on 'racing' a marathon. Specifically how do I get as fast as my genetics (and age) will allow? I wanted programs that would push me further (safely) and make me work towards a PR of a sub-3 hour marathon in the next couple years.

I stumbled upon this book because of the other reviews, and thought I would echo the high ratings of this book. I'm now halfway through a 22 week program I put together from this book. The programs are actually 12 or 18 weeks, but I used the recovery section and the guidance presented in the book to ramp-up my mileage a little between my last marathon and my next one.

The book and the included plans are not for the faint of heart. The 'easiest' plan maxes at 55 miles per week. I'm on the 55-70 mile plan and it's tough! There are 70-85 mile plans and even a section on 100+ mile weeks and multi-marathoning in shorter periods of time that are thought to be sane.

The first part of the book provides a great overview of the concepts and guidelines that forms the basis of the plans. I've read a lot of articles and books on running, but there were some great new lessons learned and understanding I got from the first part of this book.

The second part are the plans. Even though you'll latch onto the one that best serves your needs, I found it very educational to go through each of them and see how they differed in their construction. It's not just the same plan with different mileages per day. The workouts and weeks are structured differently too.

The plan has me right on that razor edge of fatigue almost all the time. I feel I can go into my workouts strong, but you can definitely feel a little residue from the previous days. And just when you feel like you need a recovery run or day off, it's right there.

Results wise, I'm getting faster. I always felt that if you want to run distance faster, then you have to practice running distance fast. And the book shows you how to do that without over-taxing your system and burning out. I've also realized the importance of running my recovery workouts easier so I'm ready for the next quality workout. It makes every day interesting to have a theme or point to the workout but I still enjoy the runs too and that's kind of what it's about!

Great book definitely differentiated from the bulk of what's out there.

In the fall of 2003, my marathon PR was just below the Boston qualifying standard for my age: 3:08. I wanted to run better, but needed help. One day in a bookstore, I came across Scott and Pete's book. I thumbed through it and decided it was worth a shot.

I read it cover to cover that night and tore out the schedules. I posted them to my wall next to my treadmill. I followed them religiously. In 2004. I took my marathon PR down to 2:42. I then ran back-to-back marathons using the multiple marathoning schedule. In 2005, I dipped under 2:40 and in 2006, I cracked the top 300 U.S. list with a 2:32 PR. Admittedly, a book won't do the running for you; it won't get you out in the rain or get you to run that final 1200-meter repeat, but it does tell you what you need to do.

Scott Douglas' cogent writing paired with Pete's brilliant coaching expertise make this a readable, practical book. The second edition is even better. I enjoyed the addition of the easy-to-grasp flexibility/strength training diagrams as well as the inclusion of drills.

If you want to improve your marathon time, this book is for you. Buy it, put it on your bookshelf and consult it. Trust me, you won't regret spending the money

I had a copy of this that i bought two years ago anfter failing in three straight attempts to qualify for Boston. I read this, followed it (70 mpw). Best marathon of the 16 I had run to that point. No wall, no slowing, very little pain. (BQ by 90 seconds, smiling as I crossed the line.) Best money I have ever spent on any book, period.

This copy I bought as a gift for somebody who remarked to me at mile 25 of a recent marathon "I will never run another marathon again unless I am properly trained."

This book is exactly what the title says for "Advanced Marathoning". While the other books tell you how to complete a marathon, this book tells you everything you need to know on how to race a marathon and to help you get a PR in your next marathon. Since I have read and started following the advanced schedules in this book, fine tuning my training as I went along, I have had several PR's. Over the course of one year and three marathons, my PR has jumped thirteen minutes. It has gone from a 3:13 a year ago to a 3:00 and I honestly hope to run a sub three in my next marathon. This is the best book, I have ever read about marathon training and would highly recommend that anyone who is serious about the marathon, buy it!

Strong on Defense

Strong on DefenseI can say enough good things about this book. It is absolute must reading. I've taught martial arts for a number of years, and the one thing that has always bothered me ismany of the techniques and skills taught have nothing to do with surviving real life violence. Teaching a woman to punch will not save her from a rapist or carjacker. Strong stresses over and over again how important the will to survive is. He explains that your goal in any violent situation is to ESCAPE that situation with your life. Many systems of martial arts teach the idea or concept of "defeating" the attacker. This is likely the worst mistake you could ever make. It locks you into a struggle with him, it cuts down your chance to escape, you must prevail or perish. A more sensible choice is to attack savagely to buy yourself some room so that you can escape. Everything Strong says is well thought out and logical. He graphically shows what REALLY happens to victims of crime. You need t! ! his information. Reading this book could save you or your family's life. Get it!

This book is not about preventing crime, it's surviving a violent crime. Strong does not concentrate on how to avoid being a victim, instead he tells how to survive the confrontation when you became one. This makes sense, since he states that violence is becaming more and more random and you can became a victim, no matter what you do. There is also some advise on avoiding crime, but the emphasis is not on that issue.

The book is filled with stories from real life. The stories no matter how grim are interesting to read, and the actions of the victims is analyzed after the story. You learn, what the victims did wrong, and what they did right. This makes the book interesting to read, and the "hard text" is also easy to read.

The principles Strong advocates are very simple and easy to remember, even during a crisis. On some occasions his advise seems somewhat farfetched, but on the other hand, it's better be prepared before something bad happens. At the end of the book, Strong gives his formula of making a safer future. His formula is simply putting the criminals behind bars, and keeping them there.

This is a very important book; everyone should read it. It's really sad that we need books like this, but it's a realistic possibility that you can become a victim. If that happens, this book may hold the answers to your survival.

My name is John Perkins I am a forensic crime scene expert, former police detective, martial arts master and the author of ATTACK PROOF. I read STRONG ON DEFENSE when it was first published. I found it to be one of the most powerful sources of information for self preservation anywhere. Many authors of self defense books fall far short in detailing how rapes, assaults and most of all abductions actually go down. Mr. Strong gives you prevention strategies as well as serious workable escape strategies. In all of my classes and seminars this is the main book I tout for all to study. If you are a black belt, a cop, or a regular civilian you will benefit greatly. This makes a superior gift for your loved ones. Make sure that you give it at an appropriate occasion. This is the kind of information everyone needs. Not only have I read the book all the way through, but on numerous occasions my wife and I have opened it up to re-read sections. We use it for our own protection and as a teaching tool for our kids. I also help out teaching self defense at a dojo and I regularly reference the information in this book. Rather than summarize it, I can only urge you to pick up a copy and read it for yourself. I have yet to read as complete a treatise on the proper mindset for avoiding and/or surviving violent crime.
