The Book of Massage: The Complete Step-by-Step Guide to Eastern and Western Technique

The Book of Massage: The Complete Step-by-Step Guide to Eastern and Western TechniqueI'm not interested in massage professionaly, just for my boyfriend and I to have a way to treat each other. And this was the perfect book for us to learn. It goes over the three main types of massage in a clear precise manner, describes each kind of stroke, the positions the massuesse should be in for each stage of massage, everything! This is a great book for trying at home. It would be a cool if they did it with a spiral bound though so that you could leave it open to a certain page....

As someone who is about to graduate to be a Massage Therapist, I find the techniques in this book to be good, and the massage sequences outlined in the Sweedish Massage quite similar to the sequences I learned in school. The pictures and diagrams are thorough, and the instruction on Shiatsu is good as well.

From a professional perspective, I had some problems with this book though. One big probelm is the book discounts knowledge of anatomy as unnessicary for massage, and I strongly disagree with that. Massage is applied anatomy, and the study of anatomy is essential for anyone who wishes to be a massage therapist, or even a good ameture. Without understanding what it is you are pressing, kneading, rubbing, and tapping you're not going to be able to be very theraputic.

I was dissapointed that the book hardly touched on contraindications(cautions, conditions in which massage can be harmfull) such as cancer, diabeties, AIDS, alcohol consumption and others. Where it does mention contraindications, it's more of a short sidenote than anything.

The book has full nudity in most of the books pictures. While this isn't a bad thing nessicarily, I didn't see any information about draping procedures and protecting client modesty. Also, most of the massage is done on the floor, rather than a massage table and there was little discussion of body mechanics of the therapist. I get the feeling the book was actually meant for 'sensual' couples massage, rather than a guide for someone who is out to become a good massage therapist. In that light, it is a decent book for couples sensual massage.

I wanted a basic book of massage techniques, this is it. I also bought another book with photos that I don't find nearly as good. This one has drawings with helpful diagrams as to direction etc. This book also covers the basics of shiatsu and reflexology but by far the most extensive section is on massage. I learned a lot just from scanning the text and studying the diagrams/drawings. This is a great book and worth the money.

As a fibromyalgia patient, I've found massage to be a great help in managing my disease. When my husband indicated he'd like to learn how to help me through painful moments, I began looking for a book to help teach him the basics. The combination of clear instructions, multiple suggestions for customizing massage experiences, and fantastic illustrations made this a winner (and I checked out about twenty or so different books). For someone who started with movements similar to what you'd use to pet a cat, the techniques absorbed from this book greatly increased not only his skills but his creativity in working knots out of sore muscles. I also found myself suddenly figuring out exactly how mysterious moves (from the client's perspective) were pulled off, such as using forearms or elbows instead of just palms or fingers. A few combinations of area-specific instructions intrigued me, and once suggested to a massage therapist, ended up being just the ticket for sore shoulders.

Althought you can learn incredible things from this book, it's not a substitute for actual training. Even my middle-ground position as having learned from several talented massage therapists and being able to replicate their results on friends and family members do not make me nearly as adept or knowledgeable as the professionals. It's a resource and perhaps a "Layman's Guide," but not nearly enough to open a business on or to claim expert status. It's not at all comprehensive of all the techniques out there, but it's a great place to start.

Although some of the illustrations are not youth-appropriate (I would not give this to a teen curious about massage), they are still handled tastefully and within context most of the time, especially considering when this was published. While my experiences in massage have always included being covered or semi-clothed, I can understand some of the rationale behind the body-baring photographs. Another note is that this book also features aromatherapy and cultural ideas of healing/massage, especially Eastern techniques. The authors don't seem to claim that these beliefs are absolute/completely necessary for massage, they do take them seriously and present them as concepts to consider and potentially include in a massage experience (personally, I don't buy into them).

Overall, if you're wanting a clear, concise guide that goes in-depth on massage techniques without being too complicated for beginners, I highly suggest getting this book.

As a connoisseur of massages and a practitioner I thought to get this book for a friend of mine who is beginning their own massage practice. Although the title promises alot, it really just gives you the following information:

-Basic Western Massage (Basic Body rub techniques)

-Shiatsu

-Reflexology

There are many of other disciplines I would have liked to see covered, but for fundamentals it is a good beginners book. It gives you the basics and some common sense advice on creating an environment and why human touch is so important. The illustrations are easy to understand, and the artist conveys the sensuality of touch very well. If you want an introductory book this is one to get, especially for the novice and beginning masseur/masseuse.

61 Natural Remedies For Diabetes: Home Remedies Wisdom, Volume 1

61 Natural Remedies For Diabetes: Home Remedies Wisdom, Volume 1I received this book as a gift. The book opens with an anecdote about a friend with diabetes. It continues with an overview of diabetes and reviews of a couple diet books related to diabetes, then moves into the 61 remedies or tips, covering diet, vitamins, minerals and other supplements, exercise, and mind-body.

Overall, the book was detailed and well-researched. The only parts I disagreed with were the assertions against meat. My prior research suggests the opposite. Other than that, there is a wealth of information here, some of which I've seen echoed elsewhere and some of which is new to me. (And new is great!) There are foods and supplements you can add to your diet to stabilize your blood sugar, for instance. And information about exercise -I've known for a while that exercise lowers your blood sugar but this book gave me more details that I hadn't heard before. The sections near the end about mind-body were inspiring.

I'm wowed by the large number of tips and the breadth they cover. It's definitely worth a read. Check it out.

After reading The China Study and the documented cases of treating diabetes and other conditions with a vegan diet, I wanted to learn more about natural remedies that I could employ without giving up animal products altogether. My interest is more in prevention, and this book provides a lot of worthwhile suggestions. The author does of course discuss dietary factors such as foods to avoid or to eat more of, but also a whole host of other treatments and lifestyle considerations. Many of them reference medical or scientific journals, and I will be doing further research.

Some of these "remedies" are a joke and this e-book was a waste of money. I learned nothing new about taking better care of myself from this book.

I 've been reading a bit about diabetes lately and could already whip off a more informative "book" than this in an afternoon,

The only new thing I learned was that vanadium might lower blood glucose nothing about dosages. Then on the internet learned this could be very toxic in all but minute amounts. Even at $2.99 this book is a ripoff. I can't understand how it got such good reviews!

In Full Bloom: A Brain Education Guide for Successful Aging

In Full Bloom: A Brain Education Guide for Successful AgingThis is a short story about a `friend'. My `friend' spent most of his adult life as an unhappy individual. This `friend' hated the work he was doing but stayed with the same employer for 25 years. He didn't particularly care for his neighbors but is living in the same house for 17 years. He didn't want to keep in touch with friends or relatives unless he absolutely had to.

During his 30's and 40's, he was always complaining about his health and the aches and pains that conveniently kept him home from work and was also a good excuse to avoid keeping in touch with friends and family. He spent too many days going from doctor to doctor and hospital to hospital, throughout his life, only to get the same answers to all the tests he subjected himself to. The tests were all negative, but this `friend' was not convinced that there was nothing wrong with him.

This `friend' was living a self-fulfilling prophecy. He had used his failing health as an excuse for so long that he had convinced himself that he was really sick. Instead of being happy that all the test results were negative, he complained that the doctors could not find the problems, which made him feel sicker.

Finally at age 58, this 'friend' went to see a doctor who happened to be of Korean origin. After another round of tests with still negative results, this doctor told this 'friend' that he was in good health, in fact, he was in very good health. The doctor recommended that he should get into an exercise and diet program before long or his health would start to deteriorate. The doctor suggested that he should look into a Yoga program which is both physical as well as educational.

So this `friend' found a Dahn Yoga Center only a few blocks from his home. He gathered enough courage to go upstairs and speak with the Instructor. After a 20 minute initial exam, the instructor was describing all the ailments this 'friend' was experiencing, and he was right on. After an introduction to the Yoga exercise routine, this 'friend' attended his first Yoga class the same evening. Although he was always skeptical and doubting everything in his life, something about the Yoga class made him feel different. He continued with the classes and participated in educational programs called B.E.S.T.

The instructor recommended the he read a book named; In Full Bloom: A brain Education Guide For Successful Aging, by Ilchi Lee and Doctor Jessie Jones. This book helped this `friend' to understand how he was creating his own problems and how to start to correct his physical and mental balance back to a healthy body and mind.

If you didn't guess by now this `friend' is really me. At age 58, I am now able to realize that my negative outlook was causing my aches and pains. It all took place in my head. For over 25 years my constant complaining and whining brought myself and everybody around me down.

Just to be able to write this story shows how much I have changed. In one year I lost 14 lbs., my aches and pains have gone away, and my attitude has changed from negative to positive.

But writing this story serves another purpose. If anybody reading this story has the same or similar attitude, I urge you, I'll even beg you, don't wait for your life to pass by without changing how you feel. Get a copy of: In Full Bloom, and / or visit a Yoga center near you. You owe it to yourself to enjoy the rest of your life. It's never to late to change.

My dad is going to turn 70 this year (wow). So despite the fact that his health and mental clarity are currently great, the aura of fear around aging in our culture especially regarding mental decline has caused him and the rest of our family to become increasingly more concerned about ensuring his continued good health throughout his latter years. Yet when I read this book, it really helped me see that aging can actually be a very positive, empowering process. Ilchi Lee and Jessie Jones are a perfect match for this book: combining Lee's wisdom and spiritual know-how with Jones' years of expertise on the aging process. Together they've managed to create a compelling (and even reverent) case for a person's final years to be their very best, while maintaining a sense of light-hearted simplicity throughout. By presenting the latest scientific discoveries about aging (which challenge many preconceptions we've all had about aging and mental decline), providing helpful holistic exercises for body and brain, and delivering a powerful spiritual message about being in charge of your own health and wellness as you age, this book is sure to make its mark as an essential guidebook for anyone who wants to be at the top of their game until their last moments on this earth.

I'm still in my 30s, but I found this book very inspiring. It presents an overall approach to health and explains how the brain is the basis for our health and our overall quality of life. It really puts the responsibility on each person to take charge of their life and create a life and a world that they want. But the book doesn't just confer responsibility, it gives step-by-step directions on how to do it.

In Full Bloom's approach to health is very holistic, offering methods that anyone can use without taking medication. As part of the whole picture it explains some scientific basis, as far as it exists, for the concepts and techniques it teaches. It also debunks common myths about aging that makes getting older seem full of possibility and hope.

I am already taking advantage of everything I learned in this comprehensive and useful book.

As someone who is always looking for new ways to create health and find ways to age gracefully this book is a treasure. It clearly explains some of the concepts and uses of meditation, showing how simple it can really be. I particularly enjoyed the smiling meditation. I felt a little silly, and that helped me relax and enjoy the experience. After only about five minutes of smiling, I really felt better!

This book is a whole lot more than your typical brain development book. It really looks at your whole brain in relation to your whole life. Like the title suggests, it is all about living a fully realized life, right through to the end of your life. This one by Ilchi Lee is a good companion: Principles of Brain Management: A Practical Approach to Making the Most of Your Brain.
