Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Secrets, 3e

Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Secrets, 3eI am a 4th year medical student persuing PM&R and this is therefore a great book for the detailed basics. Concise enough that it's not sufficient for a board review for a resident but not so basic that you won't learn anything. Good Q/A format.

Purchased this recently as I had been using the 2nd edition since I was a 4th year medical student thinking about going into PM & R. Like others in the Secrets series its Q & A format allows for a more interactive way of review and learning than the classical method of book learning. The citations of literature after each question when applicable is a nice touch and efforts to utilize evidence based medicine are appreciated. The 3rd edition is noticeably denser than the 2nd edition as well, the font is smaller, lines are smaller, and the book is a lot more dense.

The biggest problem I have is that the 3rd edition has gone to a horrible quality newspaper like paper. The older Secrets books used a nice white paper with crisp fonts that allowed for easier reading. The font as mentioned above is significantly smaller, making longer reading sessions difficult. Therefore what would have been a 4 star book easily or better, only gets a 3 due to readability.

Here's to hoping that the 4th edition if it does come out goes back to the old Secrets font and paper format which was much more enjoyable to read.

The book is very helpful especially for physical therapists who are reviewing for board exams. I would definitely recommend this book.

Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way: Revised Edition

Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way: Revised EditionMy first child was born after we attended Lamaze classes. Nothing in that birth was as I 'planned' and everything I did not want to happen...happened. I was an observer of a process that did not feel related to me.

During my second pregnancy we bought this book and attended the Bradley classes. This birth was excellent and wonderful!! I delivered a 10lb 3oz. baby boy with absolutely NO interventions (IV, drugs, epesiotomy etc.) and LOVED every minute of it. It was MY birth!

This book and the associated classes made all the difference in the world!! This book is not meant for those looking for the 'middle ground'. Bradley childbirth is NOT the 'middle ground'. If you are looking for reassurrance, practical relaxation techniques and guidance for your coach AND you are planning for a natural, personal childbirth THEN this is the book for you!!

I found this book extremely informative on Bradley technique but kind of scary when talking about alternatives and hospitals. After having two babies using medications, I was desperate to find another option. The book is extremely good about detailing the feelings you have during pregnancy and childbirth. Working on the birthing techniques with my husband was priceless and helped create a special bond between us. After having our third child without medication I have got to tell everyone how much better a drug free birthing experience can be! I only paniced once. I had praticed the pushing visualization so well it only took three pushes for our daughter to be born! The scary part can be avoided by skipping the information on Lamaze, hospitals, and doctors. It is out-dated and frightening. Move on to the excercises and have a wonderful birth experience!

Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way is an excellent resource on the Bradley Method. Author, Susan McCutcheon introduces you to the Bradley Method, explains how it differs from Lamaze, discusses how to choose your childbirth educator and your doctor, explains the importance of nutrition and how to prepare yourself for this life transforming experience.

In addition to the general information she provides in helping you to prepare, she thoroughly walks you through the Bradley Method. Through exercise, illustration, nutrition, and practice, McCutcheon completely covers how you should prepare and deal with both First and Second Stage of Childbirth. Finally, she closes the text with a discussion of various childbirth controversies -episiotomies, caesarean sections and homebirth.

This book excels in preparing you for a Natural Childbirth, as defined by the American Academy of Husband Coached Childbirth -a birth that is without unnecessary medical intervention. However, some view her tone as "fear tactics" or "outdated" ideas. I disagree. Rather, she educates you on the principles of Bradley and provides you with the ability to recognize when the medical personnel are undertaking a procedure for their convenience or for your best interest. In short, she provides you with information and proven tools to make informed decisions and take responsibility for your birth.

Despite the strengths of this book, I highly recommend that, whenever physically possible, the reader enroll in a Bradley class to supplement the reading in this book. If you *really* desire a Natural Childbirth, the class will provide you with the knowledge, practice and support you need to achieve your goals. Though this book is excellent, your instructor is almost essential -she can guide you in recognizing when you need medical assistance and when you do not!

After having tried the Lamaze method and ending up with an epidural and feeling very "out of control" during my first delivery, I went in search of more information to help me through my second delivery. I happened upon this book at a garage sale and decided it was worth a gander.

While I agree with other reviewers that the book had some dated photos and information, this did not interfere with my personal purposes for buying the book.

Having gone through the process once, I was seeking a method which:

*informed me in detail about what my body was doing through the birthing process and how I could work "with it" (rather than "escape" from it)

*gave me natural alternatives for relaxation and bearing the pain (rather than "panting techniques," how to balance on a birthing ball, focusing on imaginary "special places," getting an epidural when I couldn't take it anymore, etc.)

*gave me exercises to prepare my body ahead of time for the physical demands of labor

*gave my husband information so he could be part of the process and feel confident in his ability to coach me through

Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way proved to be the book that would meet these needs. Putting this information to use during my second labor was amazing. I was able to use the relaxation techniques at home for as long as possible. My husband was able to correctly judge when to get me to the hospital. We were able to get through the transition stage, knowing what the signposts were and that I was "almost there." I was only at the hospital an hour before my son was born. I felt great afterwards without drugs and was more than ready to go home the next day.

Having read this book "with a grain of salt," overlooking the harsh opinions about the medical profession, my husband and I used it as a tool to educate ourselves about my body. It gave us the confidence that with God's help and with an understanding of the design for birth, we could make it through. I was personally also grateful to have a very capable doctor and nurses who were very willing to work with me, and actually stated that they were very refreshed to see my husband and I working together for a "natural" birth.

In conclusion, every birth is different, but I see this book as a great tool to be used with an open mind, not knowing exactly what your personal labor will be like. It is important, however, to invest time in learning and practicing the methods in the book if you really want to reap the benefits.

For a book that was revised in 1996, the information about hospital practices is very dated, and the author is antagonistic towards hospital personnel. As a labor and delivery nurse I know of no hospital (in my area at least) that straps a woman to a delivery table or condones the "routine" use of episiotomies and assisted births (forceps or vacuum). Also, rooming in (mom and baby not being separated) is the norm, rather than the exception. The descriptions of what happens pysiologically during labor and delivery are good and I find the relaxation information helpful, not only for my next birth, but to help the mom's I'm working with relax. Get the book, skip the skewed views on hospitals and medical personnel or get the low down on the hospital you'll birth in from several people who have birthed in the same hospital

Organic Body Care Recipes: 175 Homemade Herbal Formulas for Glowing Skin & a Vibrant Self

Organic Body Care Recipes: 175 Homemade Herbal Formulas for Glowing Skin & a Vibrant SelfThis book is absolutely awesome. The recipes are simple (and great at that!), she gives a lot of background info on each of the ingredients. Being a licensed cosmetologist myself, I can tell you that she really knows her stuff (she is a licensed esthetician). I have been making my own bath and body products for a few years (using pre-made bases from suppliers) but just decided to introduce a completely organic line of products and I think this is the best book that I have read so far on the subject and highly recommend it. Great for beginners or those who have been doing this a while.

I LOVE this book!! Not only are there tons of cosmetic concoctions (ranging from creamy body butters & lotions to herbal hair conditioners & foot soaks), but there are also thorough descriptions of different hair & skin types that each recipe will benefit. It even has a section on edible body potions that you may want to try on your "honey" (think sensual love-making). The best part is that each recipe gives you just enough to yield about 1 to 2 applications. That way, you can decide which ones you like and which ones you don't before you make large batches of it. All the ingredients are easy to find (there is an appendix on where to buy / order) and the author even gives us a comprehensive list of the different properties of herbs, oils, essential oils, etc. that you can use in these recipes. I've made & tried three so far (coconut body butter, rosemary hair rinse, & orange sugar scrub) and have found each one to be great. I can't wait to experiment with the rest of them!

I purchased this book primarily because I am interested in making my own lotion, preferably with safe/natural/eco-friendly ingredients. I don't necessarily want to market it, like another reviewer, but I would like to make lotion that is somewhat professional/sophisticated. After a quick Google search, I had learned that lotions tend to include water-based ingredients, oil-based ingredients, an emulsifier (which ensures that the water and oil ingredients stay mixed together), and some kind of preservative. I bought this book thinking that it might go into a bit more detail about basic lotion formulas (ratios of ingredients to each other), or at least provide some recipes that I could learn from.

As it turns out, I had already learned more about lotion-making from my Google search than I learned from this entire book. Of the five body moisturizer recipes, four are basically oil-based, with essential oils added. There is nothing wrong with using oil to moisturize the skin -but I find it can be inconvenient (insofar as absorption may be slower than with lighter lotions, and you're more likely to get oil on clothing or sheets). Additionally, oil-based moisturizers will probably not appeal to those with problem skin. The author's fifth body moisturizer recipe does include water in addition to oils, and uses beeswax and lanolin as emulsifiers. The recipe does not include a preservative, however, which means (as the author states): "No refrigeration is required if used within 30 days. If refrigerated, please use within 3 to 6 months. (Refrigeration may change the texture of the product, but potency will not be affected.)" Since this recipe yields 2 1/3 cups of moisturizer, and I'm not likely to use it all in 30 days -and I don't enjoy cold lotion -this recipe is of limited use for me.

There are also five face moisturizer recipes. One of them is basically water and glycerin, and another is oil-based. The other three recipes each call for a trio of emulsifiers: beeswax, lanolin, and borax. I'm a newbie to the world of cosmetics ingredients, but my understanding is that borax is considered by some to be an unsafe ingredient. (A good reference is cosmeticsdatabase.com.) My guess is that the author has a good reason for using borax, and the reason is probably that borax (it appears) may be safe in small amounts -though possibly not for infants. What perplexes me, though, is that the author offers no explanation or discussion on this topic.

As mentioned by other reviewers, some of these recipes are extremely (absurdly?) simple. Examples include the Aloe Vera Toner (ingredients: "pure aloe vera juice or gel, commercially bottled or from fresh-picked leaf"), the Tangerine Toner (ingredients: 1/2 cup witch hazel and 10 drops tangerine essential oil), and the Yogurt Exfoliating and Bleaching Mask (ingredients: 1 tablespoon plain yogurt). I don't know about you, but I'm not sure those should count toward the "175 Homemade Herbal Formulas" in this book. As useful as they may be, I'm more inclined to call those "tips."

I don't mean to sound too harsh in my review of this book. I think that, depending on your needs, this book may be perfectly fine. Many of the recipes look to have interesting combinations of oils and essential oils, and I'm guessing many of the finished products smell like heaven. I'm mainly trying to present my perspective on the book, relative to my own goals -and hopefully it will be relevant to people with similar interests. But again, if you are more looking for recipes for casual use, you might really like it.

One final note -as I've indicated above, the author calls for animal products in some of her recipes. This is fine, but I was disappointed that she didn't offer animal-friendly alternatives. (In her entry for beeswax, she does mention vegetable emulsifying wax as an alternative, but then says, "but this wax has been refined and does not have the same alluring qualities as beeswax. Always try to find the real thing!") For dairy products, the author makes no mention of looking for organic versions -i.e., from cows raised on healthy diets, without use of rBST or prophylactic antibiotics. She also makes no mention of the fact that cows contribute significantly to the greenhouse effect (deforestation, water use, methane emissions, etc.). I was surprised by this only because I think there is a lot of overlap between people interested in organic products, and those interested in animal-friendly and eco-friendly products.

I own and love this book. I bought it because I was looking for natural recipes to care for my dreadlocks. I found that and so much more! Not only are there recipes for body, face, and hair care but there is a complete ingredient dictionary. In addition, the author discusses the different types of hair and skin issues that people may have and how to address them organically. Sprinkled throughout the book are suggestions for storing and gifting products and alternatives for hard to find ingredients. To top it all of, a list of resources follows the recipes to direct the reader to further reading and online stores to buy ingredients and supplies. I have recommended this book to friends and coworkers and truly enjoyed making and using the products.

NOTE: Please ignore the two star review posted by Figgi. This reviewer claims that Tourles advocates the use of talc in her recipes even as they admit that they have not read the book. Talc is neither listed in the ingredient dictionary nor the glossary. In fact, there is only one mention of the substance in the whole book (p. 262) and that is to state that it is undesirable to use due to the presence of arsenic. Tourles goes on to list the number of natural and organic options that make excellent substitutions for talc. Please do not let a reviewer who admits to only skimming the book discourage you from using this marvelous resource.

If you're serious about throwing out your store bought, chemical filled cosmetics or even thinking about it, then you MUST get this book! I bought this book about 6 wks ago, kept reading a few pages here and there, started ordering ingredients, then finally about 2 wks ago started making one or two items in my kitchen. I've since made about a dozen skin care recipes from Organic Body Care Recipes. My bathroom/kitchen/shower area smells wonderful. My skin looks, smells and feels great. I love storing them in glass bottles/containers I can pick up at Big Lots or even Walmart and reuse again & again. Normally, I stay away from Walmart but their glass oil bottles, glass sugar bowls w/lids, and sealed storage containers are PERFECT & cheap. As well as reusing my own class containers and jars at home. Ikea is another good place to go.

Ms Tourles list places where you can find these organic ingredients online but I found other sites even more reasonably priced and you can order smaller quantities on the internet. I've loved everything I've made from this book, & you learn about ingredients, their properties (and what you can sub for if you are allergic or dislike any ingredient) so you truly can make exactly what you want. For me, this was one more step in reducing waste and pollution in the world besides saving money.

MY Warnings: After making one or two items I was hooked. I then spent about $300 on ingredients. I went all out on base oils, clays, many essential oils, dried herbs (not avail in my grocery store) & even flavorings for my lip balms but it was well worth. These will last all year long, will supply my family of three and I can make gifts at the holidays for my friends and family. They tried some small samples I've made and are already putting in their orders.

Get this book, spend a week or two reading it at your leisure, find a product or two on your shelf you want to replace...and do it. You'll feel great and become addicted like I am. Another book suggestion, Gorgeously Green by Sophie Uliano, this book gives a great all around approach to doing your part for our earth. Again, just try one or two things...slowly you'll be hooked.

Marriage Fitness: 4 Steps to Building & Maintaining Phenomenal Love

Marriage Fitness: 4 Steps to Building & Maintaining Phenomenal LoveWhen I am giving premarital coaching to young couples, or marriage coaching to married couples, they often want to focus on their problems or potential problems. Of course these issues are of great concern to couples so its not always easy to direct their focus to the solutions, not the problems. Problems are unimportant. Solutions are what is important and with his book, MARRIAGE FITNESS, Mort Fertel has given a simple, yet effective four step plan to marital solutions.

I can't tell you how refreshing for me it has been to read a book by someone who understands and teaches what marriage is really all about. Love. I often use the analogy that love is like a fire. Even an out of control wildfire will eventually run out of fuel and burn itself out. To keep the fire of love alive, we must continually stoke the embers and feed it fuel. This book teaches it differently but essentially says the same thing, and shows couples how to provide the fuel their marriage must have to survive.

The book is very well written and contains some excellent projects for couples. Certainly intended for couples working together, there is also definite help here for one with an uncommitted spouse to help get things back on track.

Part 1, the first two chapters, give couples a deeper understanding of love. This may sound ridiculous, but most people confuse character traits with what I term "soul conscientiousness". Fertel deftly explains why character love makes you role mates, not soul mates. If you really want to take your marriage to a higher level, it is critical that you come to understand the differences between what I call outward love (loving the character traits of a person) and inward love (making the choice within your soul to love a person on the inside, regardless of their character traits). Once you fully understand this concept, your marriage (and innerhappiness) will be changed forever.

Part 2 is Fertel's 4 step program for building and maintaining love in your marriage, as well as his twenty exercises.

Mort Fertel has certainly given my some new ides on how couples can enrich their marriages and take them from ordinary to extraordinary. This is one of the best books you'll find on building a strong marriage. Highly recommended.

Pastor Monty Rainey

I would highly recommend reading the boook above listening to the cd's. Sometimes he repeats words over and over and it starts to feel like your being brainwashed. The information is overall pretty good I think. I've read quite a few books on divorce and marriage, and this rates near the top. It has some fresh new ideas. For people who have "normal" problems in marriage though. Does not deal with how to solve those problems. Only create love.

What can I say about this book...it saved my marriage! My wife was threatening divorce. I heard about this book on the radio and bought it, did what the author said, and it really works. My wife became interested in me and our marriage again and wanted to read the book too. She did, and now we're both doing what it says. The threat of divorce is gone...and more than that we're feeling close again. if you're marriage is in trouble, buy this book.

As someone who has read my fair share of self-help books, I will tell you that Mort Fertel has written an outstanding book-one that offers readers clear, concise, and practical ideas to improve their marriage. This book should be in the hands of every married person, as I believe it can enhance every marriage when things are going great and even when they are a bit rocky. Do yourself a favor and read this book.

I've gone through his book and his tapes (same). Very practical advice and I like the positive approach, versus drudging up all the problems. He recommends that you concentrate on doing what made you get married origionally.

He hits it dead center when he puts the obligation on you to make the change. You are the only one you can control and you must be the catalyst for change.

I also enrolled in his tele-conference course with my wife. I've only had the first session so far, but it wasn't his best--the session was fuzzy over the phone. We'll see, but I need hope that his approach will work for us since we need to make this marriage better that it is now (5 younger kid's lives are at stake).

101 Plus Size Women's Clothing Tips (Lifetips Books)

101 Plus Size Women's Clothing TipsI loved these tips. As a full-figured woman always looking for ways to spice up my wardrobe, I found this book to be fun and practical. Especially for warm weather outfits, which I consistently find a problem with, I really enjoyed the style tips and advice. Shoes make a difference, too! And I love how the author combined her fashion sense with foot sense. It's a good reference book that you can have to use whenever you need a quick tip.

This book is great for fashion advice for bigger women. It's hard to find style information for my size (22W)and Ms. Moultry's book gave me ideas for dressing using clothes that are already in my own closet. I particularly love the chapter about ideas for women with a sort of apple shape, since this is what my body looks like. Would recommend to any woman over size 12, looking for fashion advice.

I found this book to be nothing new and nothing special. I'd imagine some women would find it useful as a very concise summary of fashion tips but I read it cover to cover at one sitting and honestly did not see anything in there I did not already know. I must expain however that I work as a colour and image consultant also, I am NOT plus-sized. Some tips weren't especially enlightening eg Tip No 76 Wear Sox When You Work Out...Tip 74 talks about washing your gym gear regularly. I also take exception to the same old refrain about how 'everybody should wear black' on some women the colour is too heavy for their natural colouring and makes them look even heavier than they are not kind if they are plus-sized already. There are other books that do a much better job eg I've just begun reading Suzan Nanfeldt's Plus Style, which looks brilliant.

101 Games and Activities for Children With Autism, Asperger's and Sensory Processing Disorders

101 Games and Activities for Children With Autism, Asperger's and Sensory Processing DisordersMy nephew was diagnosed on the autism spectrum a few years ago, and I've been trying to find ways to play with him ever since. This book contains plenty of clearly explained games and activities that are fun for me and my nephew. I like that the book is organized by developmental area, too. For example, my nephew's occupational therapist and teacher told our family that he needs to work on fine motor skills, so I just turned to that chapter of the book for inspiration!

I hope this book can help you as much as it helped me. There's a lot of good stuff in here for $12.

"101 Games and Activities for Children with Autism, Asperger's, and Sensory Processing Disorders" is a compendium of practical games, exercises, and activities specially chosen or designed to enhance sensory integration and development in children with sensory processing disorders. The games are interactive, easy stimulating, and fun. Best of all, they will help the child to grow, learn social skills, and communicate. The model used by author Tara Delaney (M.S., OTR) is partially described as "Using three-dimensional learning as a way of imprinting preacademic and academic concepts in your child's repertoire of information will increase your child's opportunity for success in the classroom (p.138)." The book is divided into 10 chapters covering such areas as engagement, sensory development, gross and fine motor skills, communication, social sense, school readiness, home activities, outdoor activities, and adapting brand-name games. All the play-game activities are presented in a compact format that highlights aspects including whether the game is indoor/outdoor, equipment, how (first and second levels), purpose, and why. An excellent explanation of the Brain Library in the introduction explains the different areas of the brain catalogued for different types of learning, and how best to access them. Fundamental to Delaney's teaching philosophy is the discovery that "play has (an infinite) power to teach, develop, and connect children to the world (p. viii)." "101 Games and Activities for Children with Autism, Asperger's, and Sensory Processing Disorders" is an excellent resource for parents, teachers, and caretakers of children with sensory processing disorders.

Great job by Tara Delaney for putting together such a great play-based book. Many parents, and professionals, are often at a loss for ideas when looking for purposeful ways to interact with children with ASD and other related disorders. I like the way the author broke down activities by sensory development, gross motor skills, fine motor skills, communication, social sense, school ready, home activities, and outdoor activities. A great addition was how she dedicated chapter on adapting brand-name games... so that a child could play traditional games in a modified way. My review would have been higher, but I feel the book lacks ideas for those on the spectrum with more severe, cognitive challenges. These parents, including myself, are looking for similar activities, but are often disappointed when the child is not an assumed level of understanding or functioning. So, as a result there is a great loss of interactive play in the home/social environments for these families. If Ms. Delaney took on this challenge in authoring another book of this caliber for that population, it would get 5 stars from me!

Zen Martinoli's 5 Minute Fitness

Zen Martinoli's 5 Minute FitnessThis is an excellent book for those who don't have a lot of time to exercise. Just a few short minutes per day and you are well on your way to being physically fit.

The book goes into detail on numerous bodyweight exercises then puts them together into various short workouts that can be performed practically anywhere with a little floor space. The workouts are considered "high intensity" so they are not recommended for people new to exercise. However, the book does include a base workout that will help a beginner improve his/her conditioning before moving on to the other workouts. The workouts are also divided into three levels and you progress through the levels as your conditioning improves. It's important to note that some of the workouts are a little longer than 5 minutes and this obviously doesn't include the warm-up or cool-down. So, in the end it may end up being more like 10-12 minutes which is still short compared many of the workouts being performed out there.

This would be an excellent companion to take on vacation or when traveling and especially for those not wanting to invest time, money or the inconvenience of going to a gym.

"Zen Martinoli's 5 Minute Fitness" is a small/medium sized paperback book of short and high intensity bodyweight exercises, done in circuits. No equipment is needed and Mr. Martinoli notes that these exercises are not intended to replace your regular exercise program, but to complement it.

Photos are black and white and vary in size, and in general, are the size of a business card. Little anatomical diagrams accompany each exercise. I always prefer larger photos.

Exercises are organized into four parts. Here are a few of the exercises listed for each part.

Especially great for those who travel and want a nice resource when equipment is minimal. Also great for those who workout at home. I have integrated these workouts into my schedule and found them to be challenging and what's better, the results are awesome!

A quick sysnopsis:

There is a nice section explaining all of the exercises.

There are plans for three fitness levels, so wherever you are on the spectrum there is a workout here for you!

The author explains all of the various workouts and the goals for each (i.e., cardio fitness, strength, endurance)

Oh, there is the back page with gives you nutrition advice. It's worth the price of the book, that one page. :)

Highly recommended!
