How to Choose a Nursing Home: A Guide to Quality Caring

How to Choose a Nursing Home: A Guide to Quality CaringThis comprehensive guide, written by a geriatric nurse with over fifteen years experience in long-term care, will help you select a home that will give your loved one both quality care and a place to live with dignity.

It will answer such questions as:

* What kind of care does your relative need?

* What is the cost of care and who will pay the bill?

* What are the qualities to look for in a good nursing home?

* How can you recognize a substandard facility?

* What are the qualifications for Medicaid and Medicare?

* Where can you get further information on financial assistance?

* What can you do if your relative is unwilling to go to a nursing home?

* What should you do if you find the care to be inadequate, uncaring, or in violation of state or federal law?

Excellent straight forward guide. It's not easy taking this difficult step for one or both of your parents nor will they necessarily agree with you. This specialist author has evidentally seen it all and knows of all those sensitivities in dealing with a parent while providing a helpful guide, from an "insiders" point of view, on what to look for and what to watch out for. All the homes are businesses first and foremost to make money. Care of an elderly "customer", so to speak, that may not be around to complain in a couple of years or worse doesn't even have the speech facility to complain, puts these homes in the driver's seat. I appreciated this "insiders" guide with how to see through all that and make the right choice.

Take a Deep Breath: Clear the Air for the Health of Your Child

Take a Deep Breath: Clear the Air for the Health of Your ChildParents often find themselves with many more questions than they originally anticipated prior to a child's birth. There are most likely very few parents who anticipated an infant with pneumonia and fewer were probably curious about whether their child at age one would snore as loud as their grandfather. Some of these situations are obviously much more severe than others, but determining when to take action and when to wait it out can sometimes be the most difficult question. A parent's number one source of information and advice is always their child's pediatrician, but who couldn't use a "go-to" manual? Take a Deep Breath: Clear the Air for the Health of Your Child by Nina L. Shapiro, MD is the premier guide book for parents looking to "clear the air" for their little one as well as themselves.

Initially I agreed to review Take a Deep Breath: Clear the Air for the Health of Your Child by Nina L. Shapiro because of our own family's struggle with breathing problems with my son. What I didn't expect was how wonderful a resource it would turn out to be. There were many points that Dr. Shapiro explains that we encountered during my son's infancy that we never considered simply because we felt he wasn't in any urgent distress. That's not to say we simply let him suffer through most of his first year, but had we known that using Afrin coupled with Saline drops could have relieved his allergy symptoms we would have jumped to use it. This isn't the only point, but now that he's older and suffers with severe allergy problems we will now be seeking out specific allergy testing that I wasn't aware was available until now. It also became clear to me that this would make an excellent gift to the parents of the new nephews we're welcoming into our family.

One of the aspects of Take a Deep Breath that enjoyed the most was the wrap up at the end of each chapter. Dr. Shapiro breaks it down into summaries titled: "The Big Picture", "Don't Worry", "Worry" and a "To-Do List". These are so unbelievably helpful because, as it is with our own pediatrician, it can sometimes be difficult to get an appointment. There have been times I've "pushed" my way into an appointment only to discover that my daughter merely had a virus and ended up being better a day later. That's not to say the book will resolve all of a parents concerns and you'll never need to see a pediatrician again, but as a parent sometimes you just need a little bit of reassurance from an intelligent and reliable source to give you the peace of mind for the "waiting period".

Also, I shouldn't fail to mention Nina's humor. Sometimes in medically based books it starts to read like a text book. For me personally, I don't feel the need to take a walk down college year's memory lane. Reading the sections in Take a Deep Breath were truly refreshing. Nina is not only a doctor with all the skills and education that comes with that title, but she's a human being with a wonderful sense of humor. She's obviously seen it all in her many years of practice and can find the humor in a two year old shoving a pea up her nose because it seems just like another "pocket" to put things in. I couldn't help cracking up through this section because I've been there. My daughter has been found numerous times with little balls of cereal in each nostril. It simply doesn't matter how watchful we are or how many times we've told her not to do it, she still loves sticking things in those tiny convenient holes. What was great though was to know the main danger rests in what she puts up there and never to joke around if she manages to stick a battery up there.

Respiratory and breathing issues in children is something most parents can't avoid, but luckily Take a Deep Breath: Clear the Air for the Health of Your Child by Nina L. Shapiro, MD is the perfect go-to manual for parents looking for answers and reassurance. This is definitely a book I'd recommend to new parents as well as potential grandparents who may be spending any amount of time with young children. Nina Shapiro covers an extensive list of symptoms and issues, including CPR techniques, that sometimes may go overlooked and could easily provide not only your child with relief but yourself as well. Though our children are now almost ages three and five I still found a great deal of comfort as well as potential solutions to some of their respiratory issues that I'll be seeking out in the near future with our own pediatrician. Take a Deep Breath: Clear the Air for the Health of Your Child by Nina L. Shapiro, MD is by no means a replacement for your child's pediatrician but in a parent's life when sometimes you need to seek out answers and find comfort on your own this is the go-to book for child respiratory issues!

I absolutley LOVE this book!!!! So informative, yet easy to read & understand! I loved it so much that I have started giving the book as baby shower gifts. This book is perfect for all us mothers who hover over our children's cribs all night just to be sure they're still breathing and for those of us who obsess over every "strange" cough and wheeze. All new parents will need this book, and even us old ones can learn something new! :)

Dr. Nina Shapiro is Director, Pediatric Otolaryngology and an Associate Professor UCLA School of Medicine. After writing lots of articles she decided to do a book. Lucky enough for parents, it reads as if you're sitting down and having a conversation with a highly trained and well regarded pediatric ear, nose and throat surgeon.

"Take a Deep Breath" is an A to Z guide on children's breathing issues. It includes every airway what it should do when normal, what's abnormal but nothing too bad and what to freak out about. Categorized by age, each section also offers up a list of what caregivers can do to prevent some of the most common problems and treatments that can be administered at home to ease the problems that occur. About 80% to 90% of kids will experience some airway angst during their childhood so this is a worthwhile read.

One of my kids has asthma, the other one occasionally snores; Take a Deep Breath is a very handy guide -well worn already -which calms my nerves and tells me what to be on high alert about. A worthwhile buy for any parent, regardless of your tyke's state of health.

Thank you for all of your truly useable information!! My little nephew has had breathing issues since birth and this book really helped our family understand what was going on with him. Thanks for making your books so user friendly. This book is a MUST for new families with babies that have any kind of breathing issues.

Having a child with Asthma, I knew I wanted to jump on this book to review. Watching him go through the difficulty time of trying to catch your breath and you can't, is nearly unbearable on a mom who wants nothing more than to give him a good set of lungs. Hearing him say, help me, mom is sometimes more than I can take. But, with the help of inhalers it's controllable. Sometimes. Sometimes it's still hard. So, when I saw Dr. Shapiro's book, I thought yay!!

Sitting down and opening this book, I had it finished in one day. I read each page with awe and a better understanding of what children go through, and what, as a parent, I can do to help ease the issues. Through detailed discussions in the book, Dr. Shapiro shows parents who have children affected with breathing issues, and those who don't, what to look for, how to work through it, and the steps to help keep it under control.

I highly recommend this for every parent out there. No matter whether you have an infant or a teen with breathing issues, this is highly informative and easy to understand. I definitely give this book a 5 Book rating and will keep this on my shelf for further use. Well done, Ms. Shapiro, and THANK YOU for helping this mom understand!!!

The Essential Oils Book: Creating Personal Blends for Mind & Body

The Essential Oils Book: Creating Personal Blends for Mind & BodyI own many books on this subject, but I find myself pulling this one off the shelf time and again. It offers a lot of basic information in an easy to use format. There are more complete lists of oils and their propertiesout there, but I like this book because it also includes recipes and advice, and inspires me to create my own blends. I recommend this to anyone looking for a basic reference or informational book on essential oils.

I got this book as a Christmas present and today's the 27th but I've read most of it already. GREAT book -it's like a cook book. Given my undergrad work in biochem, it's just the right positioning for me. Tells how the chemical work together(carriers, bases, high notes...) and has a good variety of recipes for toiletries to make yourself: bath soaks, facial oil, and best of all, YOUR OWN PERFUME! Seeing as I'm working on distilling all those rose petals, scented geranium leaves, lavender, ginger and jasmine from my garden, I can become an amateur perfumer --!... It's great fun.

I was looking for a straightforward book with recipes to get me started with aromatherapy and this one was a good place for me to start. It has an intro section on precautions of using essential oils (they're intense :) And then goes into descriptions and uses of all sorts of oils which will be useful to me once I get better at this. For now I enjoy the recipes that are in the last half of the book especially the baths. There are also recipes for dryer scenting, floor cleaning solutions and other applications that I haven't tried yet but sound neat especially the dryer scents!

Petite Retreats: Renewing Body, Mind, and Spirit without Leaving Home

Petite Retreats: Renewing Body, Mind, and Spirit without Leaving HomeBetween caring for two kids, a husband, and assorted animals and working a zillion hours a week, I have days when I barely have time to brush my teeth, let alone set aside time at home to engage my body, mind, and spirit, right?

Wrong.

After a friend gave me a copy of Petite Retreats: Renewing Body, Mind, and Spirit without Leaving Home as a gift, I found that I can--and must--make time for myself. In fact, I'm a better person for it.

Home should not be just one more place to work and tend to the needs of others, the authors coach their readers. We think we have to spend money and find time to run away from home to recharge our batteries; but, these writings helped me see beyond these obstacles and find ways to enjoy short and inexpensive getaways in my own house. Ahhh.

I was so tickled with this book that I've given it to my harried friends to encourage them to also find time to relax and retreat.

Read it, re-read it, and mark your favorite retreats. You'll find its well worth your time.

If you are stressed out, feeling frantic, and sure you have no time to take some time out for yourself, think again. In an easy to read and engaging style, the authors clearly outline a variety of inviting, fun petite retreats, at least one of which will surely appeal to every taste. Along with a step by step guide to planning a retreat, Mastro and Harding offer some thoughtful wisdom about caring for yourself that makes so much sense that it is hard not to start planning your first 3 hour (or all day) retreat immediately. I followed their steps and chose a personal petite retreat, put it on my calendar, and some 8 days later I found myself in my kitchen, music playing, mixing up a batch of banana bread loaves that filled the house with such wonderful smells, I found myself smiling and feeling thoroughly refreshed. (OK, so that may not be your idea of a petite retreat, but each to his own!) I was so refreshed, that I put another petite retreat on my calendar for about 6 weeks later. This one I planned for a full day, despite the fact I "didn't have time." What I discovered is that I DO have time if I make time, and the benefits of that short "just for me" retreat pays dividends for weeks. Anticipating it, and then savoring it, seem to add to the pleasure of the actual time taken. I highly recommend this book, especially as we enter the holiday season! (It would make an excellent gift, too.)

Gardening for Health and Nutrition

Gardening for Health and NutritionI found this book at the bottom of my book shelf. I picked it up for nothing at a library sale. Flipping through the book I was suprised to find myself completely hooked.

I've been an avid suburban gardener for a while, but this book opened my eyes to what natural gardening is all about. After this book, I'm dedicated to learning more on real gardening.

Besides the arcane (Read Organic) Gardening knowledge, I loved the California-Granola message. Peace, love, and Mother Earth baby. Not to mention strong Conservative Christian overtones...but I like that.

I recommend this book to anyone who owns a rectangle of dirt with greenery growing out of it. It will change the way you think about plants, and life. Some of the concepts are a little out of date, but still lots of fun.

Dr. Perricone's 7 Secrets to Beauty, Health, and Longevity: The Miracle of Cellular Rejuvenation

Dr. Perricone's 7 Secrets to Beauty, Health, and Longevity: The Miracle of Cellular RejuvenationDespite having read all of his prior books, I was pleased to find that Perricone covers a lot of new ground in 7 Secrets, while recapping his core principles (avoid inflammatory foods, for one) in a fresh, streamlined manner salted heavily with new information.

I found the info on pheromones and caralluma (for weight control) very interesting, and liked the Anti-Aging Kitchen chapter...good info on oils and cookware, etc.

If you want to get started on a personal makeover, this is a good place to start...you'll understand the way diet influences everything, and the information on nutrition supplements is very sound...I've been in the technical end of the supplement industry for more than 20 years, know the research on most nutraceuticals, and can smell hype a mile away.

Perricone has inspired many me-toos, but he still's the best at presenting the core info on diet, aging factors, skin health, and weight control in a clear way.

Dr. Perricone, you are welcome in my house anytime! Thanks to you, I have an "anti-aging kitchen" exactly as you advised in the book. This big change caused quite a stir in my house. You inspired me to go through the cabinets, pantry and refrigerator and throw out everything that was not good for me. It wasn't easy but all those cans, boxes and jars of food with horrendous ingredients are gone, gone, gone, and most of what I now eat is fresh, fresh, fresh! I am an active, high-achieving boomer who doesn't look my age and I would love to stay active, healthy and productive (I am never retiring!) into my 90s and beyond. (Well, why not!)

I have read and loved all your books, but this last one, "7 Secrets of Beauty, Health and Longevity," is the one that really took hold. I am following every suggestion of yours to the letter---foods, supplements and physical exercise included. Already, and it hasn't been all that long, I look and feel much better. I also feel more, well, peaceful. Joyful might be too strong, life being the roller coaster that it is. But, thank you for the warm, sage advice. By the way, my mitochondria are happier too -those "energizer bunnies" inside our cells. I love the way the book makes even the most complex medical, scientific and nutraceutical concepts accessible to a lay person like me.

My assessment is that this is the right book for anyone who reaches a certain age (anywhere over 40) and wants to hold onto his or her energy, health, spirit, and youthful looks. Those under 40 need to read the book too, I think, so they won't be a mess by time they reach my age, which too many people are these days. Wish I had had this book 20 years ago, but I am seriously grateful I have it now, to inspire me to take better care of myself for the rest of my life. PS I am loving my oat pilaf and all those other delicious foods in the book that I never even knew existed! Bravo Dr. P!

Buy Dr. Perricone's 7 Secrets to Beauty, Health, and Longevity: The Miracle of Cellular Rejuvenation Now

Perricone's "secrets" amount to good nutrition, moderate exercise, and widely available and widely used anti-oxidant supplements. I see Perricone lecturing on PBS and people taking notes furiously as if it were some sort or revolutionary science he is promoting. It is not. It is a milidly intriguing Linus Pauling-esque theory that inflammation is the driving factor behind cellular aging and consequently that nutritional supplements can suppress the inflammation and stop the aging process. I don't fault him for promoting his theory, I just wonder why more people who should know better don't hear little warning bells going off when they read his very strong claims that could potentially be supported with real research but are not. They are not presented as theories in most of this work, they are presented as marketing claims for selling supplements.

The popularity of this material is not hard to explain. Perricone is not originally a vitamin peddler who was trying to build scientific credibility, he is a doctor who already had some credibility, presumably, then became a vitamin peddler. We are all impressed by a doctor who seems to be getting past drugs and surgery to look at health and wellness in a scientific way. Especially when he does a good job promoting a rosy vision of a future where aging is understood and life is prolonged. I give him credit for this just as so many others seem to do. But I am also not finding as much substance when I look more deeply at the details. I already knew a lot of the cellular chemistry about metabolism, so his discussions did not particulary hold me in awe as they seem to his PBS audiences. I was able to look more specifically at what what supposed to be his unique ideas.

Personally, when I examined his specific claims, I found this material to have very little technical depth, and that his use of biochemistry and cellular chemistry jargon throughout and constantly referring obscurely to this research or that study just clouds the fact that his most critical substantive claims are not directly supported anywhere.

There is no evidence that people live better orlonger lives when taking his expensive supplements, much less the more widely used versions of the same supplements, and yet there are a lot of veiled claims about him "doing research" and "reading research" and so on that supports his claims. None of it is actually presented in any of his work that I can find. He seems to have published two papers on topical glycolic acid which have nothing to do with nutrition or aging. The rest is all anecdote and speculation dressed in a slick lab coat manner.

There is a lot of advanced high school level cellular biology and biochemistry slanted slightly to make his inflammation theory of aging seem more plausible. That aspect of his writing is better than average for the self-help genre. I commend Dr. Perricone for not talking down to his audience as do most self-help authors.

On balance, there is a lot of good common sense advice here about nutrition that I can find little fault with. Most of his general recommendations about anti-oxidant supplements are not unreasonable from my perspective. There is a fair amount of reasonably good popular science writing about health. That much makes this a better self-help book than most.

But I also have to withold some favor for this book because it fails to ever connect the science writing with the claims it makes about aging and inflammation or empirical research regarding the specific claims being made in the book. The claims are made plausible not by supporting them with data but by trying to awe the audience with detailed technical explanations and the vague veneer of science through terms like "personal research" and "various studies" and so on that admit to no specifics that can be verified. Even if Perricone's ideas about inflammation being the cause of aging are true, nearly all of his suggestions are things that many people have already been doing for decades, and are still being refined through health, sports, and fitness research.

I admit that I like this guy's more subtle arguments and mostly reasonable way of presenting his "revolution" a lot more than Dr. Atkins' excesses and technical obfuscations. But then I have to put them in a similar category of people who have interesting things to say but then get a bit carried away to an annoying degree with their over-marketing of their own ideas seemingly mostly to prove the doubters wrong. In the final analysis, afterall, in spite of the impression he sometimes seems to give, Perricone isn't actually doing published research regarding inflammation and aging (at least hasn't so far), he is selling books and supplements and giving PBS fundraising lectures.

I really enjoy the books of Dr. Perricone. I think that he knows what he's talking about. This book continues the philosophy of his other publications: chronic inflammation (or the love of pro-inflammatory foods) is the root of all physiological evil. This book focuses on cellular rejuvenation, in particular, the need to protect the mitochondria (the powerhouse of the cell and site for ATP production, as we all learned years ago in high school biology) from extensive and lethal DNA damage.

Dr. Denham Harman's free-radical theory of aging is now universally accepted to the point that food marketers have picked up on the hype of "antioxidants" (molecules that lend an electron to an excited free oxygen radical, thus stabilizing it and preventing oxidative damage to cells). In all the years my family has purchased boxes of Lipton black tea, we had never been informed until recently that we are in fact drinking in 105mg of Protective Antioxidants per serving. Dr. Perricone worked with Dr. Harman's free-radical theory and related it to his hypothesis that inflammation is the underlying cause of disease and aging.

I think that Dr. Perricone and Dr. Harman are far-sighted scientists/physicians, and now the rest of the medical world is backpedaling and accepting the free-radical and inflammation-underlying-disease theories. Dr. Perricone says that Dr. Harman's work went unnoticed and unappreciated for decades. Fortunately, Dr. Perricone had the foresight to evaluate and later champion this free-radical theory before it became common knowledge.

Another theme that Dr. Perricone comes back to time and time again is the need to control blood sugar levels, even if you are not diabetic. A diet high in refined, simple sugars will upset insulin levels and cause glycation (AKA cross-linking, sugar molecules attach to protein molecules, especially collagen, which in turn causes the previously flexible collagen to become rigid). Dr. Perricone recommends supplementing with cinnamon and niacin-bound chromium to regulate blood sugar levels. He gives us a scientific overview as to why these two supplements, one a spice we all love and the other a trace mineral, help our bodies maintain proper insulin function and normal blood sugar levels.

I try to follow his dietary and supplemental guidelines as much as my budget will allow. I am hardly in an economic position to spend several hundred dollars on supplements every month and eat completely organic. Thankfully, organic food is becoming more available to the point that Meijers (a major supermarket/retailer in the Midwest) has its own organic food line that is reasonably priced. (I hope this in no way means that organic standards are being watered down.) Dr. Perricone's own line of supplements is way out of my budget, but other vitamin companies offer similar products at a third or so of the price. His skin products are for the wealthy and A-list celebrities only. Fortunately, Reviva Labs offers its skin care version of the Perricone Trio (alpha lipoic acid, Vitamin C Ester, and DMAE) and peptides. Jason Organic has some great products too--I love Jason's Vitamin E oil blend as a moisurizer for both my skin and hair (used sparingly). I've been using EMU oil after reading rave Internet reviews of the stuff (Thunder Ridge). It's great for dry skin, joints, and sore muscles. My point being--you can take the essence of Dr. Perricone's advice and guidelines, but shop around for comparable products if you can't afford a huge investment in the Perricone Store.

Dr. Perricone differentiates cookware in the 7 Secrets, recommending porcelain-enameled cast iron and stainless steel while eschewing nonstick synthetic coating, Teflon, and aluminum cookware. I don't remember a discussion of cookware in his previous books. He devotes the remaining pages of his 7 Secrets to delicious-sounding recipes; a comprehensive list of foods that comprise the "Anti-Aging Kitchen;" food, supplements, and skin care resources; and references.

MAMA KNOWS FITNESS: Bells, Balance & Your Body: The Kettlebell Way to a Better You

MAMA KNOWS FITNESS: Bells, Balance & Your Body: The Kettlebell Way to a Better YouThis book is fantastic! So easy to fit Sheri's fitness "habits" into your life at any age. A must read to change your life! I learned so much from this easy to read book!

This book is easy to believe that your mother wrote it. Sheri Barnes gives the main reasons why you should exercise, advice on how to avoid the Freshman 15 (the college student weight gain), responds to your excuses on why you're avoiding exercise (especially the `lack of time' issue), how to form `good' habits, how to fix eating habits, explains the changes of the body as you age and the importance of exercise, then concentrates on the advantages of the kettlebell as your main exercise tool.

Sheri Barnes gives practical and useful advice. Some kettlebell authors suggest in the beginning that you see a certified trainer to ensure that you're doing the exercises correctly; this isn't practical for most of us. Ms. Barnes admits to using a DVD in the beginning. She recommends about what size kettlebell to use; it's ok to start light and go heavier. She said when the movement seems easy and you no longer break into a sweat, move up to a heavier kettlebell.

In her book, Sheri Barnes refers to her website, . The website has videos of her demonstrating some of exercises, and one showing her kettlebell mentor, Jeff Martone, using Sheri Barnes as a weight in an exercise. She has written descriptions and pictures of various exercises, both for abs and kettlebells. My complaint is the pictures are very small so it's difficult to impossible to exercise and refer to the book at the same time. The book is full of website addresses to explore and footnotes in case you want to check her accuracy.

I recommend this book, especially if you need to be reminded why you should and continue to exercise (Personally, I need constant nagging). I would suggest a supplement kettlebell book or two. Jeff Martone, wrote the book, Kettlebell Rx: The Complete Guide for Athletes and Coaches; this book has large, color step-by-step pictures of each exercise. Another book I would recommend as a supplement is Kettlebells For Dummies by Sarah Lurie. Sarah Lurie gives advice for specific groups (pregnant women, seniors, etc.). These three books cover the subject of kettlebells and exercise for everyone.

I got this, as an addition to my 'kettlebell' book library. She is a good writer, the book's section on changing habits (i.e. exercise, good eating, rest) are very good. The pictures showing the kettlebell moves are not...I would be hard pressed to learn kettlebell moves from the pictures in this book. There are other books which show the moves much more clear and easier to learn. I, myself, have had to lay off kettlebells for awhile. Issues with my lower back, requiring the expertise of chiropractic treatments to solve. I would recommend getting one on one training with a certified kettlebells instructor, as well as good books/dvds...your chances of injuries or overtraining would be much less.

When I picked up this book, I was looking for a new addition to my exercise routine. I wanted to do some strength training and needed something I could do at home instead of having to go to a gym. What I got was so much more.

Mama Knows Fitness is a complete guide to a healthy lifestyle. Sheri took the time to break down how to incorporate fitness and healthy living into every stage of your life from college student through retirement. She offers examples (with pictures) of how to use kettlebells, smart advice about nutrition, and the benefits of keeping your body healthy over a lifetime.

I've read a lot of different things about fitness and healthy living, but I've had a block about healthy eating. Honestly, Sheri changed that. She said (paraphrasing here) a lot of people wonder about why healthy food is so expensive and say they can't afford to eat healthy. What we should be wondering is why unhealthy food is so cheap. Change your thinking and change your life.

Sheri's conversational writing and practical approach made me feel like she was my own personal coach. She leaves you with no excuses and shows you exactly how you can fit in a great workout no matter how busy you are. For me her kettle bell workout turns out to be the perfect fill-in when I can't get to the gym or the weather isn't cooperating for a run. I never expected a fitness book to be an enjoyable read, but this one really is! I highly recommend this book!
