I'm Taking My Eggs and Going Home: How One Woman Dared to Say No to Motherhood

I'm Taking My Eggs and Going Home: How One Woman Dared to Say No to MotherhoodLike many other difficult subjects, infertility is often taboo even between close friends. Lisa's memoir creates a platform from which these issues can be discussed. Her story is endearing with moments of gentle humor and humbling honesty. It really presses the reader to think about the way our culture defines womanhood, and what happens to a woman's identity when she finds she cannot reproduce. This is a definite discussion starter for your next women's reading group pick.

This book literally took me into the lives of Lisa and her husband. She weaves a wonderful story that has stayed with me, even a week after finishing the book.

The account of her struggle to become a mother, and her resulting decision not to have a child is gripping as it is understandable, and is as powerful as it is understated. She details the very personal emotions of going through this process, beautifully crafting story that many of us can relate to. It was so exquisitley written, but raw and honest. There are very few books that deal with this topic and she has done a beautiful job describing her journey and she is very brave to do so.

She is an important voice for those of us who are infertile and do not have children by choice.

This book is a great read. I finished reading "I'm Taking My Eggs and Going Home" three days after I received it, staying up late and almost missing train stops because I was so caught up. I laughed out loud, cried, hoped, and shared Lisa's journey from mama-wannabe to sane childfree woman.

What I think you need to know is this isn't just some woe-is-me tale about infertility with a happy miracle-baby ending. It's a well-written, universal story about a woman trying to find her place in our world. Any woman can relate to her struggles. And if you have a friend, sister, or coworker who has been or is going through infertility, Lisa's story will teach you how to better support her and inspire you to listen with more compassion.

This was a really excellently written, intelligent and heart-felt book. It was so good I couldn't put it down -I stayed up late and finished it in one day.

We haven't yet traveled as far down the IF path as the author (we're going to start testing in the next couple months), but all of the content leading up to the author's IF testing rang true and familiar to me (I'm pretty sure I recognized the website she talks about joining, having used it myself for a year and a half), and I found myself welcoming this wonderful lady into my heart as she lets us into hers.

It was also refreshing and validating to discover there are women like myself out there -women who are opposed to the drugs of IVF. I've never responded well to artificial hormones (ie all the many types of hormonal BC I've tried have made me a crazy-woman or made me very ill), and ever since I started thinking about what we would do if we had trouble conceiving naturally, I've been resistant to the idea of IVF and putting myself through all of that. It was good to see that I'm not alone in having reservations about this type of medical treatment.

For my own well-being, I've been working on embracing a future without children in it, because I know how uncertain the IF and adoption/fostering journeys are. Reading this book was, again, refreshing and validating. It was also helpful and informative -I've been dreading the pain and intrusiveness of IF testing, and reading about Lisa's experiences was informative and helped me prepare myself for what is to come. It also reaffirms my desire to always put my relationship with my husband first, to not lose touch with each other through this difficult journey, and waste years of our precious time on this Earth together.

I think I'll suggest that my husband read this too. Although he doesn't talk about it much, I know it's been hard on him too.

The cherry on top, is the website/support group the author has started and tells us about at the very end of the book.

The Antibiotic Alternative: The Natural Guide to Fighting Infection and Maintaining a Healthy Immune

The Antibiotic Alternative: The Natural Guide to Fighting Infection and Maintaining a Healthy Immune SystemEver wonder about the origin of some home remedies? Perhaps those of your family or maybe of anothers? Ever wonder if they really work? Dr Jones explains in plain language the origin and the use of many readily avaliable minerials and herbs as home remedies as well as alternatives to doctor prescribed medications. In the time I have owned the book, I have found it to be a regular referral source for "what ails ya". Besides being informative, I found it to be fast and easy reading.

The Antibiotic Alternative is clearly written and very easy to follow. For added depth, the back section of the book provides very in-depth monographs for botanicals including garlic and myrrh. The book also includes recipes and information on harvesting and drying herbs. In addition to treating various conditions naturally, the major message Dr. Jones expresses in The Antibiotic Alternative is the need to strengthen your immune system beforehand. This she explains is the best defense against infectious disease and major health problems.

The Antibiotic Alternative: The Natural Guide to Fighting Infection and Maintaining a Healthy Immune System

By Cindy L.A. Jones, Ph.D.

(Healing Arts Press, a division of Inner Traditions, 2000, ISBN 0-89281-877-8)

Looking back to 1969, when the U.S. surgeon general stated that "the war on infectious diseases had been won" in large part because of antibiotics, makes me realize the necessity of being responsible for my health. In a time when we are bombarded by information and misinformation, it's comforting to have Dr. Jones's guide on hand and to know she holds a doctorate in biochemistry and molecular biology. Very well laid out with an excellent index for cross-referencing.

My husband is disabled and I've only gone back to work after a long absence from the working world. When we've been sick we've simply had to do without because there was no money for a doctor. Now at last, I can grow some of the things I need to keep us healthy. No recommended I know, but the doctor's antibiotics don't always work and are too expensive to buy and not work.

Prescribed antibiotics don't work any more. This book will tell you why, and what you can do keep your first line of defense your immune system healthy, and how to keep ahead of the bad bugs now that the flash-in-the-pan "wonder drug" antibiotics can't help us. Besides the good advice, this book makes convincing sense of it all.

Terence Conran's Garden DIY: Over 75 Projects and Design Ideas for Making the Most of Your Garden

Terence Conran's Garden DIY: Over 75 Projects and Design Ideas for Making the Most of Your GardenTerence Conran's GARDEN DIY (do it yourself) contains 75 doable projects from a child's play house to various other wood, stone, brick, terracotta, and cement projects for your outside garden rooms. Conran shows several examples for each garden structure (pergolas, trellises, arbors, fences, patios, paths, ponds, and plant containers) with complete instructions for at least one example in each set.

For example, the section showing a variety of seating arrangements, includes a complete set of instructions for making a very pretty yellow painted garden bench with slatted 1"x1" rails. One needs to review the instructions before determining whether the materials and/or tools are on hand or available, but Conran tells the reader exactly what s/he will need for each illustrated project.

I borrowed the book from the library and decided not to purchase it because the items Conran illustrates do not meet my particular needs. Currently, I am looking for instructions for a garden screen to restrict my view of the next-door neighbor's yard. While Conran includes a few items that would fit the definition of a garden screen his examples do not match what I have in mind. I needed a screen in another part of the yard where I was less worried about blocking sunlight (against a fence for example) his illustrations would prove more helpful.

The best sections of the book from my perspective include his great illustrations for hen-houses/bird houses. These fowl shelters are so beautiful I would build one but I live in an area that does not allow chickens--even ornate feathered pet chickens. His examples of garden houses are also beautiful but I don't need a garden house because I already have one.

If you're just beginning to create structures for your outdoor rooms and think you may want to "do it yourself" you'll find plenty of ideas in this book.

Krav Maga: An Essential Guide to the Renowned Method--for Fitness and Self-Defense

Krav Maga: An Essential Guide to the Renowned Method--for Fitness and Self-DefenseI did two plus years of krav maga pretty religiously, to green belt level. I got this book, and I would say it is very good. It is the only book out there that details basic krav maga techniques, and for that, I think we should thank the author. I was a bit surprised to hear the Israeli guy say it is not real military krav maga, because I trained several times here in the U.S. with Israeli Seals and paratroopers and I see no real difference between their system and what David teaches (plus, the krav maga I learned is the exact program designed in Israel by Imi for the IDF). Yes, there is a lot of "politics" in martial arts (!), and yes, it is very "par for the course". The author states that he travelled to Israel to learn krav maga, so I also found it odd that someone would say he doesn't know the "Israeli version of krav maga". I found this book to be a really solid intro. to krav maga. It is just, there is nothing like the intensity of a krav maga class. If you have been in a class, the intensity is just so real and important, and you can't get that from a book. I recall doing like 30 seconds of hard knees into a pad someone was holding, with 3 krav guys yelling at me to "stay in the fight". I recall being in a darkened room, with people with pads pushing in on me, with my eyes closed, and someone yells "gun !!", and you have to fight your way out past the people and find the gun guy and defeat him. I recall the adrenaline, the stress, the sweat. You of course can't get all those "military" things in a book, but you can at least see the krav maga program. I think this book is a good introduction to krav maga.

I have studied various martial arts for years. I was fortunate enough to have had an instructor early on whose primary focus was practical self-defense, in other words, what would actually work in a street fight, mugging, ambush, etc. The techniques in this book are the same I have learned over the years. They are practical, and they work. The thing about this book I was happiest to see was the instructor's admission that: in a fight, you're going to get hit/hurt, possibly more than once, and that you must defend yourself to the best of your ability while striving to end the fight as quickly as you can with the appropriate amount of force (you're not going to immediately gouge the eyes out of some drunk who's a little overly friendly in a bar, but you may need to if he follows you out and tries to rape you). I also like the fact that he has included reality: it may take several blows from you before your attacker succumbs. Don't just hit a man once in the throat; hit him as many times as you safely can. Overall a good read, and if you can remember and apply these techniques in a crisis situation you're ahead of the game, but it still doesn't take the place of taking a class in a martial art and feeling what it's like, under controlled conditions, to actually block someone's strike, grapple with them, punch back, etc. But remember and apply these techniques if necessary, and this book very well could save your life.

I typically don't get involved in writing reviews of products. But I felt it was my Amazon civic duty to inform all who are interested, that the material covered in this book is clear and thoughtfully presented. Compared to the Imi Sde-Or (Lichtenfeld) book, the author takes an approach more oriented to the civilian. The book will make an excellent addition to the library of a beginner or intermediate Kravist or for anyone interested in the system.

Being the author of several books on the martial arts and fighting, I am always looking for books of exceptional quality to add to my library. If I have a book in my library, it's definitely worth owning. One such book is David Kahn's, "Krav Maga."

After a brief introduction, David gives you a good basic overview of Krav Maga including some of its history. From here he goes right into a section on philosophy, which is very good, and one in which I would have to agree with about 90% of what he has to say.

The next section in the book gives a good overview on the proper mindset needed in order for you to prepare yourself for combat. Something a lot of books fail to do, but not this one. David also gives you a basic understanding of the vital/vulnerable points on the human body.

David's next section is rather brief to my liking, but still a good overview on the basic principles involved in striking correctly for maximum effect. This section covers such strikes as; punches, palm heel strikes, elbow strikes, and eye gouges. There is also a small section on blocks and parrying as it is called in boxing.

The following section covers various lower body strikes and kicks along with kick defenses, which include deflections, blocks and grabs. This next section was particularly interesting in that it discussed close combat fighting and techniques essential to this section. Such as; falling, crawling, clinching, takedowns, defenses against tackles, etc.

The escape section was very enlightening as David covered the basic principles of escape from basic grabs, chokes while standing, chokes while lying down, head locks, hair grabs, and bear hugs.

Like most books that try to cover too much in one volume, I feel that the sections themselves although very well done, tend to be too brief on the proper execution of each individual technique. However, having said that, this is to be expected as the scope of this book is intended as a basic overview of the complete system, not a single volume devoted to one particular technique.

The only fault that I have with this book is the fact that I would have preferred actual photographs for demonstrating the techniques, rather than illustrations. I felt that a lot of what David was trying to explain got lost with the use of illustrations compared to if he would have used actual photographs.

The book continues with a brief section on basic strategies, which I found to be very solid. It then finishes with a basic training section which covers stretching, training programs, a 12 week training routine, and sparring.

Overall, this is a very good basic overview on the art of Krav Maga, and one you definitely want to acquire, especially if you decide to join a Krav Maga class. And that is not a bad idea at all.

This book is AMAZING. I've often been a critic of martial arts books because it's very hard for me to learn from books. The creators of martial arts books don't always make it easy to learn from their books either...and let's face it, some martial arts don't lend themselves well to book form.

David Kahn has OUTDONE himself with Krav Maga: The Contact Combat System of the Israel Defense Forces. The format of this book is very eye catching and uses a lot of bold text, boxed text and special sections to hold the readers attention. While much of the material can be considered "basic self-defense" by some standards, I found myself learning a new perspective on every nearly every page. Even though I've seen these techniques before, I had never seen them packaged and categorized in the way David has done it.

I'm going to make a bold statement here...I can actually learn Krav Maga from this book! That's right! We all know that going to a class is the best way to learn any martial art. But this particular book even surpases DVD's in my opinion in an applicable way to learn effective self-defense.

I try nearly everything that lands on my doorstep for review. I enjoy a lot of it, but nothing, not one thing on this website has impressed me the way this simple book did. I wish I owned 50 copies and could give them out to family and friends.

If you follow what David is saying and practice in the SUPERB way he has it laid out, you will learn self-defense and Krav Maga. I am following David's 12 week program right now and I will finish it. I was VERY sore after the first day which was a suprise! This isn't just a fitness program or something, you are drilling the techniques and building muscle memory.

Summary: I have quite simply never come across a martial arts book THIS inspiring and THIS good...ever...period. It's a MUST READ for anyone concerned about self-defense, fitness or Krav Maga.

The Everything Parent's Guide To Children With Juvenile Diabetes: Reassuring Advice for Managing Sym

The Everything Parent's Guide To Children With Juvenile Diabetes: Reassuring Advice for Managing Symptoms and Raising a Happy, Healthy Child)I received this book several days ago. I have already read it completely and think it is the most comprehensive book to date about raising a child with diabetes. The topics covered are helpful for the parent of a newly diagnosed child as well as seasoned parents of a child living with diabetes who are moving into a new realm of growing up with a chronic disease.

A must for all parents of kids with diabetes and a nice way to get your feet under you after dx. This book includes tools and information about technology to help manage the disease but also ways to get through emotional toll disease can take on the entire family.

I'm glad to see a portion of proceeds goes to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, but noticed that the book mentions many resources for finding information, not just JDRF.

This is an excellent book for any parent who is faced with raising a child with diabetes. I purchased this book five years into my daughters diagnosis and learned many new things. This book is very well written for the layperson and easy to pick up for reference. I would strongly recommend it!

I purchased this book and two others on the topic as my first buys for my new kindle. I am happy to say this book was WELL WORTH my time and money. It's not new and that worried me, but it still seems to be "new" when you read it. I loved the detailed and honest advice about things like family dynamics and how to handle every day situations. I think it must make a big difference to have had a medical person as a contributor. The balance of the writer's "mom knowhow" and the doctor's expertise is just right. This reads like the writer is sitting there talking to you about it -and in a calm and nice way. I'll keep this on my kindle to refer to and to share with friends and family. Yes, there could be more about CGM's and I hope the writer adds to the book with some new info, but overall, this is THE book every family dealing with diabetes should have on hand. Hurrah!

Eureka! Memories and Motivations: A Strategy for Creating a Healing Home for the Stroke / Brain Inju

Eureka! Memories and Motivations: A Strategy for Creating a Healing Home for the Stroke / Brain Injury Patient and CaregiverI was searching for practical assistance after bringing my eighty-nine year old mother home from a lengthy hospital stay.

She had suffered serious oxygen deprivation as the result of severe COPD and pneumonia and we were hoping to be able to help her back to a reasonable level of independent living.

Madonna's book not only provided helpful suggestions to assist in Mom's recovery; it also gave us support. Madonna gave us "permission" to accept all of our emotions (even the not so altruistic ones). Madonna explains why it is not just OK to be good to yourself but that it is absolutely necessary. She provides practical everyday ways to keep the spirit of the caregiver from totally tanking.

At a time when both the patient and the caregiver are in one of the most difficult situations of their lives this book may offer a little help and hope!

Eureka! is just what the doctor ordered for every overwhelmed and weary person, thrust unwittingly into the role of caregiver to a brain injured loved one. Author Madonna Siles is the friend you want to have if you've been forced to travel that frightening and lonely road.

Almost cracking under the pressure of trying to bring her dear friend, Eve, back from the effects of a devastating brain aneurysm, Siles developed her own method of coping. With a comfortable, non-intimidating style she generously shares the innovative steps she developed, based on her own life experiences, to give Eve the Eureka! moments that brought her back from almost non-responsive to 90% of her former self. All of this while saving her own sanity.

As the Baby Boomers cling to the hope of "a little more quality time" for elderly parents whose minds are slipping away, the search is on for some form of help. Whether facing the effects of an injury or the ravages of time, Eureka! just may be the answer to the prayers of many a desperate caregiver.

Buy Eureka! Memories and Motivations: A Strategy for Creating a Healing Home for the Stroke / Brain Inju Now

I settled in one Sunday afternoon with Madonna Siles' new book "Eureka! Memories and Motivations: A Strategy for Creating a Healing Home for the Stroke / Brain Injury Patient and Caregiver" unsure what to expect. I knew it would be a good "read" because I enjoyed her previous book "Brain, Heal Thyself: A Caregiver's New Approach to Recovery from Stroke, Aneurysm, And Traumatic Brain Injuries", about her friend Eve's and Madonna's journey from a level 5 brain aneurysm through recovery, but beyond that I had no expectations.

What I discovered was a memoir and self-help guide through one of life's most difficult journeys. Packed with a great deal of common-sense advice from someone who has literally "been there, done that", Madonna had the strength, foresight and wherewithal to document her journey as Eve's caregiver. What worked and what didn't. The daily frustrations. The debilitating mental fatigue. She shares it all with her readers. Aware that if she flagged as a caregiver because of mental stress, physical exhaustion, or lack of inspiration Eve's recovery would flag too, Madonna persevered through tough, challenging times.

Siles offers hands-on, practical tips and exercises designed to re-wire or re-ignite lost memories and skills in the brain-injured patient. She's honest enough to say that her methods may not work for everyone, but when she was faced as a caregiver to a brain-injured patient and was given no direction or advice for continued therapy from the medical community, she knew she had to do something, had to find something, some plan, that would get Eve back on the road to brain recovery.

She also stresses the importance of keeping the caregiver's mental attitude strong under trying circumstances. Exercises designed to reduce stress, promote relaxation, aid worry-free sleep are important and often overlooked by the harried and overwhelmed caregiver.

Despite the serious topic, Siles' book if filled with humor and personal and relative memories from her own interesting and challenging life. At the end of each engaging chapter, Madonna suggests intriguing activities to aid the caregiver. Finally the 21-day motivational workbook at the end of the book is packed with thoughtful exercises for the caregiver and patient alike. Even those of us not immediately confronted with the daily difficulties of caring for a brain-injured patient can, and will, appreciate the deceptively simple daily plans, meditations, and reflections and Siles common sense approach in the face of one of life's biggest challenges.

... this is an excellent book with ideas, encouragement and a good testimony. Want Eureka! Memories and Motivations: A Strategy for Creating a Healing Home for the Stroke / Brain Inju Discount?

I'm a caregiver to my husband, Patrick, who has had a stroke around 1 and half year ago, and is still staying in rehab hospital.

Around a year ago Patrick had barely passed the swallowing test, to finish up a cup of milk or oatmeal took him at least 45 mins. He couldn't walk nor talk (the tracheotomy was just weaned), cognitive level was close to zero, let alone having any interaction or communication with me. Then I came across Siles' Brain heal thyself, and it had helped me go through the toughest time of my life.

Eureka! is the 2nd book from Siles, and it's just as good as the previous one.

I'm not going to sugarcoat the whole thing. Stroke is a brutal disease and most of the times, it's beyond our control to have it recovered or not. It's brutal not only to the patient but also to his/her loved ones, after all, our lives have completely changed because of it and we caregivers require additional love and strength to go through each day. To become a better caregiver so that our loved ones can be healed better: we need to eat well, sleep well and pray hard for our strength and power, and read the right books for our mental nutrition Bible or any Spiritual book works wonders, and so does this one.

Eureka! has taught me how to relax myself from the hectic caregiver's schedule. My intuition and creativity are generated ONLY during my relaxation mode. They can help to pick up my husband's signals faster and stimulate his minds and memories for better recovery, but most importantly, to have fun and worry free together on this recovery journey. Fun is something often will be disregarded of when it comes to rehabilitate severe illness like stroke and have it replaced with anxiety. But on the contrary, we need to incorporate fun to our daily routines of the rehabilitation treatments; because the brain only learns and recreates better through games and relaxation. Everyone is different when it comes to have fun and creative, you need to develop your own ways to help your loved one. And this book teaches you how.

Now, a year later, by the time I finished "Eureka!" not long ago, Patrick is able to walk with one person aiding, make phone calls and communicate with single word, do some simple math (grade 3 or 4 level), watch the entire movie in the theater with full comprehension and sing his favorite songs all the time. Eating is not a problem anymore, trust me, he eats more than I do and even was asked to maintain his weight(a.k.a. diet) so that he can walk better later.

If you ever want a good brain injury rehab book to help out(from the bottom of my heart, you won't ever need that), or simply want to relax and have a good fun read, you can't go wrong with Eureka!

Good luck to you all caregivers out there.
