6 Pack After 60: A Simple & Effective System for Getting & Staying Strong (Volume 1)

6 Pack After 60: A Simple & Effective System for Getting & Staying StrongI just had the chance to read this book. Jim has put his experience into this book and has written it in a very simple manner that any fitness enthusiast would be able to read and follow.

Some of the examples he shares are quite interesting because of the unique ways and methodologies described in them. The one important takeaway for me from this book is that I now know a systematic and sustainable way to keeping myself fit. In fact, Jim has also included some useful illustrations in the book that makes it convenient for the reader to follow and practice in their daily fitness routines.

In short, plenty of takeaways for me that I can practise regularly.

I grabbed this for some of the older people in my family, mainly my dad who is getting on a bit now not 60 yet though and those that surpass his age age and they all found it refreshing in one way or another.

Right now he is taking notes from this book and planning out a course of action. With my overview of what is contained I can see this being very effective for anyone who thinks it's too late to get in shape or cannot find the drive to do it. It's well written and presented clearly and easy enough for anyone to understand. I haven't found a book that matches the concept thus far but can now stop looking and go cycling with yesterdays couch potato :)

If you've NEVER exercised in your life, maybe get this booklet which for a beginner I'd rank 2 stars. If you have exercised and worked yourself into shape then with age let yourself lapse: on a daily basis start doing pushups, squats and chin ups/pull ups while being sure to use good form. Just FYI, I was a runner, coach and martial artist and always got bored going to health clubs to lift weights. There, for free, you have the essence of this booklet (only with my brief background vs the author's longer one). Or pay $4.95.

I really liked this book. As someone in the health and wellness industry (nutrition) I am constantly looking for information that I can share with my clients regarding a sustainable strength program. That is exactly what this book addresses. Simple, effective exercises that can be done by anyone, in their own home, in the nooks and crannies of their day, that will build strength over time. Brilliant.

The author provides a variety of exercises, explains the importance of tracking your progress, shows us what it should look like with photographs, and doesn't waste any time making it complicated. Well worth the five bucks.

At first glance this may seem like a book that only men would be interested in. However this is not the case. I found this book extremely helpful as it is so important for women to maintain a strong body and strong bones as they age.

Mr. Hess's 6 Pack After 60 system is something that anyone can and should do. This book is well written and very easy to follow. The pictures are clear as are the instructions. The book is also very motivating and you know as you read it that yes, you can do this! That is how I felt throughout.

Thank you James Hess for writing this book! I know it will make a profound difference in my health as I age!

Men's Health Best: Weight-Free Workout

Men's Health Best: Weight-Free WorkoutI bought this at the end of January and began doing routines immediately. The two bodyweight circuit routines (every other day, in the afternoons), the abs routine (each morning), and the "isoexplosive" routine (on off days, in the afternoons) work very well together.

Since the end of January, I've lost 25 lbs and went from doing five of most exercises to doing twenty, with most push-up variations with my feet elevated to lift more of my own weight. I've also thrown in some pull-ups by tossing a towel over a sturdy door, and pistol squats. The few diet tips -eat protein right after working out, essentially -are also handy. My strength and stamina have increased, I look better, and had to buy new clothing for the summer as the old stuff was just falling off me.

This won't turn you into the fellow on the cover, of course, but if you're like me and just won't go to the gym (too far away, too expensive), all you need is a patch of floor and you're good to go, and least if you've not exercised much before, or have had an injury (as I did).

I also recommend buying a jump rope and getting in some cardio that way.

This little book packs a lot of value into a few pages. What I like best about this book is it cuts out the fluff. It is brief and to the point on it's coverage of general nutrition and bodyweight training aspects. Most importantly, it contains a variety of workouts ranging from; full body circuits, back care, balance and abdominal routines. Selections are short, sweet and well organized.

Highlights:

Two, 22 minute full body, bodyweight circuits (great for those days when you want to focus on active recovery and give your body a rest from your regular heavy lifting)

One, 15 minute high intensity workout (Good for when you are crunched on time)

A Valuable 7 minute "save your back routine" (Doing this will relieve the pain in your back, after a day of sitting at your desk.)

Good verity of well illustrated stretches

Solid, basic selection of well illustrated bodyweight exercises

The total content of this book is under a 100 pages, but it manages to provide great photos and a good verity of workouts. This book is a great little handbook for those who are looking to venture down the path of bodyweight exercises. Another plus is this book is small enough to take with you as a reminder to squeeze in a workout.

This appeared to be a bunch of magazine articles cut and paste into a short book. There was no reasoning, progression, or consistency to their plan. It did contain a variety of exercises though but no plan. I think You Are Your Own Gym: The Bible of Bodyweight Exercises for Men and Women is a much better alternative.

I bought this for my brother. He has been using the book for almost 3 weeks now. He is so happy and excited with this book and the guidance it provides. I can hear his confidence coming back from the way he sounds when we talk on the phone. I bought this so he would not have any excuses to exercise during the week. Seems to be working!

Okay, I hadn't seen my brother since he began using this book until a week ago. I am so proud of him. He lost 10 lbs and dropped from a 4x to a 2x. He gives this book all of the credit!

The Massage Book: 25th Anniversary Edition

The Massage Book: 25th Anniversary Edition"The Massage Book" is a classic for good reason. Everything you need to know in order to give a truly outstanding, tension-releasing full-body massage is covered in the book. It begins with concise information on practicalities such as what type (and how much) oil to use, and how to work at a massage table without becoming sore or tired. Don't have a table? No problem. This book shows how to use the floor, or build a basic portable table if you're so inclined. The author does not cover specialized techniques such as deep tissue work or shiatsu, which require professional training (to avoid injuring). The style presented in "The Massage Book" is one which is used by a large percentage of professional massage therapists to produce a deeply satisfying, relaxing massage. The main body of the book is a well-written and illustrated set of instructions covering approximately eighty massage strokes. The instructions are exceptionally clear and easy to follow. Important: you'll learn how to hold your friend's body so their limbs do not flap about as you lift them to move through the strokes. You can apply the strokes in the exact order they are presented, or mix them differently. The techniques presented have served me well for the past fifteen years. My massage therapist friends beg me to work on them. Learn from this book, and you too can have the power to make otherwise rational humans beg and drool for your attentions.

* Reviewing the 1978 British Penguin edition *

Short version -

This is a book you can take anywhere and use on just about anyone with ease and effectiveness.

Long version -

I bought this book years ago in a second-hand bookstore and it has since followed me and my partner around the world. I have filled bookshelves in 3 continents and this book has accompanied me on every move, along with my $5 traveller's health book that is indispensable.

This is a book I constantly dip into, and I've used the techniques described on various people very successfully. It is written simply and well, with tips like "use your weight rather than your muscles to apply pressure" which have been very useful for a small person like me. It also shows you how to prepare yourself and the person you are massaging, which I find paramount to giving/ getting a good massage wherever you are.

One of my favourite things about this book is the design and layout the book falls open easily without threatening to close on you, and with its large font and simple illustrations, you can easily read and then follow the instructions on the pages. As such, our book is smeared with massage oil from flipping the pages as we go along.

I have not managed to find another book that is this compact, useful and practical. There is no weight/ space lost on large glossy photos or describing redundant strokes that you will never use. If you are interested in massage, there are sections on making up new strokes, easing tension, foot reflexology and further study as well.

I have a read a lot of books on massage and in my opinion this is the best general book on the subject, despite the lack of glossy photos and other special extras that often don't add much value when push comes to shove.

This book emphasizes techniques, how to connect different sequences to each other and important general principles. In a short space, it gives you what you really need to know to give a great massage.

The specific techniques presented are the most important ones and they are explained clearly. After reading this enjoyable book, you will be able to give an excellent massage with confidence in what you're doing.

If you have never done massage before and pick up this book you can learn to do it easily. If you have learnt massage before and pick up this book you will learn more. Not only are the descriptions clear and simple but the illustrations show you clearly how to do even the more complex massage strokes.

On top off all that the book is written in an informative but not dictarial manner. Downing describes techniques and approaches and lets you (and your massage partner) make an informed choice as to how you will do it.

I learnt massage from this book along with many other people. A highly recommended purchase.

Is there a better book on how to give a massage? I think not. I bought my first copy of this book in 1976 and have replaced it twice (people keep borrowing it and moving away!). In 23 years of practicing massage on my friends and family I have yet to find a book that teaches more clearly. Anne Kent Rush's illustrations and George Downing's words are perfect compliments for each other.

I have given this book as a gift countless times over the years and each time my thoughtfulness has been appreciated with repeated "thank yous" as they learn just how wonderful massage can be.

Strength Training for Seniors: How to Rewind Your Biological Clock

Strength Training for Seniors: How to Rewind Your Biological ClockI liked this book because it gave some really good information about exercising in general, about how the muscles, tendons and ligaments all work in addition to some good exercises and instructions for developing a personal exercise program. Blank worksheets are included to help the reader set specific goals, manage stress, and record progress in workouts. This is a short book but packed with helpful and interesting information on strength training specifically for people over 50. It also includes several different scenarios from real clients he worked with who had different problems to provide inspiration.

To answer the excuse of having no time, Michael Fekete says on pg. 122:

"Put your priorities in order. Eliminate the useless, the unproductive, and the nonsensical. You will be surprised at the amount of time freed up for training. The time you allot to exercise is your best investment. If you think that you cannot make time for exercise now, then be sure to make plenty of time for illnesses and hospitals later."

I highly recommend this book! I found it helpful.

I first saw STRENGTH TRAINING FOR SENIORS mentioned on FirePointe.com, a senior site dedicated to romance and an energetic lifestyle. Then I read books like Dr. Ruth's SEX AFTER 50 and Jeoffrey and Renee Powell's SEASONED ROMANCE, and saw an overall pattern emerging...to live life to the fullest and enjoy romance and wellness and a great attitude more than ever, fitness is both basic and imperative.

All this caused me to start making changes. I ordered STRENGTH TRAINING FOR SENIORS, SENIOR FITNESS and a couple of other related fitness, strength and stretching books. This one is a great primer for all seniors, regardless of your health background. It takes from from A to Z, and builds on a growing desire to get stronger, healthier and more agile.

You can't go wrong with STRENGTH TRAINING FOR SENIORS! And what a difference a better, stronger body makes in every area of life, including lovemaking.
