I've been "trying" to lose weight for over 30 years! This book finally told me how with no punches pulled. Nothing "warm and fuzzy" about this lady. LOL I weigh less now than I have in 25 years and have run two 1/2 marathons. Thank you Joyce---Dave

I loved this book! Joyce used the analogy of running a marathon in comparison to our life race. Its so true, the challenges we face all the time. Its inspiring to see someone that had carried that much weight for so... many years and finally conquer the addiction to over eating. How many people are being sucked into the sin of gluttony and not even aware of it. Society makes it just seem normal, and its not! Joyce shares with us that we don't have to live in bondage, we can be free!! Great Book!

The Power of Positive Fitness: Maximizing Physical, Mental & Spiritual Health

The Power of Positive Fitness: Maximizing Physical, Mental & Spiritual HealthI'm really happy to see John's new book on Amazon.com. It's fun to read his books because he makes the "technical" easy to understand for those of us not educated in his fields. And his suggestions are actually "do-able." This is another practical message from someone very well versed in his areas of expertise -an easy, enjoyable read that can mobilze the reader into actions that will improve their lives now and for years to come.

John Rowley's book, The Power of Positive Fitness will not only help you become a more fit and healthy person in body, but will also make you fit in mind and spirit.

To sum it up on John's words, "God created us as body, mind and spirit. Our mind and spirit are housed in our body. When your body goes weak, your mind and spirit will surely follow".

This book ties together not only John's personal stories that are riveting and inspiring, but the stories of some of the most successful people in health, fitness and business and how being fit in mind, body and spirit has brought about success in their lives not just financially, but physically, relationally, mentally and spiritually which is what living an abundant life is all about.

John Rowley's The Power of Positive Fitness is a book I highly recommend and is a must read.

This past summer I've tried to retrain myself in the way I eat. I chose to eat health foods (i.e. more veggies and proteins) and no or practically no, carbs. It worked! I'm down 25 pounds! But I would like to lose my last 15 pounds but am stalled so when I saw this book, The Power of Positive Fitness, I was intrigued.

Now I was thinking fitness as in running, walking, treadmills and so on but as I read this book I realized the power of positive fitness really stems from within. On page 69, John Rowley tells us that, "What goes in your head is much more important than what goes in your mouth because one directs the other." This statement is truly important and SO true! I found that if I don't direct my mind to getting better

The Fearless Caregiver: How to Get the Best Care for Your Loved One and Still Have a Life of Your Ow

The Fearless Caregiver: How to Get the Best Care for Your Loved One and Still Have a Life of Your OwnIt is about time that someone tackled the issues that caregivers face. It can often be a lonely and confusing time. I was a caregiver for my mother a few years ago and looked everywhere for a book like this. I needed something to walk me through all of the things I didn't understand. This a well-crafted, easy to read and understand book that all caregivers should read. I wish it had been available five years ago! I recommend it highly.

Families are often thrust into caregiving because of a crisis, without any experience with how to manage the overwhelming stress, responsibilities, legalities, and medical aspects. Gary has done an excellent job sorting it all out with 'The Fearless Caregiver', guiding us through the maze. Easy to read, motivating, empowering, and highly recommended! Gary is so knowledgeable, he was my choice as one of my very first guests on my radio show.

The Doctors Book of Home Remedies Revised Edition

In fact, I loaned the book to my brother and he refuses to give it back. I bought another copy for me and a few more for gifts. Not everything that they recommend works, but I have a high deductable for medical insurance, and I have saved many trips to the doctor by reading this book.

I can't count how many times this book has helped my family and me over the years! We have to older version which is just fine for most things however, I'm ordering the newer anyway for the updates.

The ONLY negative I found was that some of the intros for the doctors in each remedy were so long, they took up most of the remedy so really, without the doc intro's the book would be smaller which is good (less bulky in the middle of the night)! Maybe the writers can mention the docs in an intro chapter because some of them are mentioned twice or more in the book. Make since?

GREAT BOOK THOUGH!

Nasty, Brutish, and Long: Adventures in Eldercare

Nasty, Brutish, and Long: Adventures in EldercareHow old are you? Do you ever think about what life will be like if you reach seventy, eighty, or ninety? In "Nasty, Brutish, and Long," psychologist Ira Rosofsky offers his personal and professional perspective about "old age and the world of eldercare." Rosofsky is an outside contractor who is paid to treat clients in assisted living facilities and nursing homes. For confidentiality reasons, the men and women he describes are not actual patients. However, it is a fair assumption that the doctor bases his characters on people he has met during his long experience in the trenches.

Rosofsky introduces us to Sam Rosen, who is one hundred and two. Sam's wife, who died at one hundred and one, "was buried in the cemetery" last year, while Sam is now "buried in the nursing home." Sam cannot believe that his seventy-seven year old marriage is over, his house has been sold, and his kids never visit. His universe has become a constricted space with a few possessions he can call his own. Although the residents of eldercare facilities vary widely in age and in their ability to function mentally and physically, many of them deteriorate rapidly as a result of a lack of stimulation and "benign" neglect on the part of relatives and staff.

Nursing homes are a $115 billion a year business. This exorbitant amount of money pays for a highly regimented bureaucracy in which "all the routines are scrupulously documented" and "every procedure is by the book." The goal is "to keep a body alive to pass on to the next shift...." The government pays for a huge number of pills dispensed and a wide array of therapies, but many patients have little face time with concerned caregivers. When Dr. Rosofsky speaks to his clients, he makes eye contact and listens to their heartrending and repetitious stories about their memories, relationships, dreams, and nightmares. They are often delusional or in denial about their circumstances. Although some of them insist that they would never kill themselves, they admit that they wouldn't mind "waking up dead."

Rosofsky makes his book even more poignant when he muses about his own fear of aging. He recounts the death of his father, who suffered from dementia before passing away in a hospice just shy of his ninetieth birthday. The author has seen the system from both sides of the fence and for the most part, he is not thrilled with what he sees. If the baby boomers are lucky enough to stick around for another two or three decades, their chances of seeing the inside of a nursing home or assisted living facility greatly increase. They will need to spend down their money (unless they have long-term care insurance), resign themselves to an almost total lack of privacy ("living in a nursing home is life interrupted"), and be willing to accept the fact that unless their children are attentive and live close by, they won't receive many visitors. If they are fortunate, they won't suffer from cancer, diabetes, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, or any of the other dread diseases that can make the golden years a living hell. What do we have to look forward to? We have no way of knowing the answer to this frightening question. However, after giving the matter a great deal of thought, Ira Rosofsky assures us that "trading a life of independence for institutional confinement" generally "does not make for happy campers."

"Nasty, Brutish, and Long" is a bitterly ironic and scathing indictment of the way that we marginalize our sick and elderly population. It is a fast-paced, darkly humorous, and eloquently written work in which Rosofsky shows how tough it can be for those who are dependent on the kindness of strangers. Once the sick and elderly cease to be productive and instead become a burden, we take care of the problem by handing it over to someone else. When our turn comes, we might not be so content to "go gently into that good night."

I had enjoyed excerpts from this book on the author's website, but what really works when reading the entire thing is the flow from chapter to chapter. I really like how he integrates his professional and personal experience, and unlike a reporter who's simply done a lot of research, this guy draws upon a wealth of experience.

His knowledge of nursing home practices combined with his own thoughts about his oncoming old age and mortality really make this book come alive. I had orginally thought this would be a dry examination of the state of nursing homes. But it's really a fun book to read, if you can laugh at what might be in store for you. And reading about his own parents made me feel as if I knew them.

This is a good one.

Since finishing this book I find myself recommending it over and over to people with aging parents. If you are middle aged, you are like to be one of these or know many of these so I recommend it to you as well. The book provides invaluable insight into the (nasty and brutish) process and system of aging that few of us are likely to escape (if we are lucky). Dr Rosofsky addresses this irony in a thought provoking and humorous way -by openly sharing his own professional and personal experiences. Also, as a teacher who is always preaching about good writing, I give Dr. Rosofky high marks. His writing is clear, descriptive, fast moving and accessible. You will enjoy reading this book inspite of the subject matter.

This is a well-written, informative and humorous portrayal of every aspect of nursing homes in the U.S. today. It's also grim, depressing, morbid and horrific but that's because nursing homes are like that. I'm considering the necessity of my 92-year-old mother going to a nursing home, and I'm glad I read this because now I'll do everything I can to keep her out of there. Read this if you want the real story and not the sugar-glazed version.

Marijuana Grower's Insider's Guide

Marijuana Grower's Insider's GuideAfter owning 4 copies of this book and now into my 5th, i can say with out any shadow of a doubt that The Marijuana Grower's Guide has got to be the best book ever published about how to grow your own, it starts with a history of the plant (where it was first grown)and then tells you how to go about growing your own inside and out...This book even tells you how not to get caught, and after all this fact every grower should know about...From planting the seeds to the final harvest, Mel Frank and Ed Rosenthal have published a book that would have been a best seller (it is now with grower's)in every book shop around the world, if it was not for the stigma that this poor plant has recieved over the years...If your into growing, or thinking about how to get started then this book is for you...As Mel and Ed say in Marijuana Grower's Guide..."why spend hundreds of dollars on buying dope when you can grow your own" redroo@start.com.au

***** Good on you guys from the! land of the kangaroo...

I have a very old copy of Mel Frank's "The Indoor Outdoor Highest Quality Marijuana Grower's Guide" which is out of print now so that goes to show how long I have been following this man's work. Back in the 1970's he completed that little pamphlet sized book which basically discussed methods of growing cannabis. It had a few black and white photographs and some back pages explaining light dispersal patterns and strengths. The inaccuracies of that first book can be seen by comparing it to this volume of work. This pattern is found in all of Mel Frank's work and if you compare any of these old books to any new good grow book then you will understand why.

Mel Frank's contribution to the cannabis literature world is good but fails to grasp what a grow book should be about. Basically this book describes what cannabis is, where it can grow and how it grows. Unfortunately it does actually explain in detail how it is done but simply dictates the cannabis cycle both indoors and outdoors by talking about the different stages of growth in each environment. This is done by addressing cannabis in a series of chapters which briefly cover history, species type, techniques, harvesting, curing and smoking.

This book is not a grow book which is a common misconception about it. It is an overview of cannabis from the perspective of Mel's experiences with the plant and what he has learned through studying the plant and it`s life cycle. The chapters are not as deep as one would like them to be (expect chapters that only last a couple of pages on a vast topic such as species type, cloning, making seeds).

The idea behind this kind of book is that it should back up it's concepts and views with references to actual experiments and garden designs. You will not find them here in this book. If you are looking for a full analysis of the cannabis plant and gardening designs (which is extremely important if you want to learn about HID light systems, hydroponics etc. ) then you should try out books like "The Cannabis Grow Bible: The definitive guide to growing marijuana for recreational and medial use" by Greg Green or "Indoor Marijuana Horticulture The Indoor Bible" by Jorge Cervantes. As many of the other reviewers have correctly pointed out this book is old and even the revised edition is old. So do not expect to find any of the new growing methods (or new equipment!) in this book. Times have changed and this book has not. Can anyone here say that they would use a grow guide that is over a quarter of a century old to conduct a growing project? Many have done so but no one in the 21st century would consider it. The reality is that there are many new and better books on the market.

For example, the problem with Mel Frank's work is that there is an extremely limited botanical foundation to his work. Some of the concepts like force flowering are now void and replaced by a more correct approach to calyx development. The nutrient advice is not as solid as it is today and cloning techniques are very different. Where and how to get seeds is not covered. Also it fails to hit home with extremely important points like obtaining good genetics is a primer to getting good yields! People will not be impressed with bag seed by any means. There are so many important areas not covered in this book and they are extremely important to know about.

Do not let this review put you off buying this book though. We all have it because it is an oldie. My advice is to get something new as well so that you can keep up with the times and produce better results. Also you can compare this book with the new ones and see the difference for yourself.

Homeopathic Remedies: A Quick and Easy Guide to Common Disorders and Their Homeopathic Treatments

Homeopathic Remedies: A Quick and Easy Guide to Common Disorders and Their Homeopathic TreatmentsDr. Hershoff writes a homeopathic reference masterpiece in his latetest homeopathic guidebook. Homeopathic Remedies is easy to use and covers a huge spectrum of ailments. Even a novice will be able to prescribe homeopathy after reading it! Along with information on how to prescribe homeopathic remedies and dosages, Dr. Hershoff gives a brief but yet very throrough history of homeopathy. This book is so complete, that it is the only guide you need to begin your own gentle art of healing using homeopathy.

I have a small library of homeopathic books, and this is the first one I consult when a problem arises. It is a repertory, not a materia medica, so then I cross check myself with other books to confirm.

The first section which discusses about homeopathy is concise and useful, including discussion of potencies and modalities. The next part is body system charts to quickly refer you to the rest of the book which is organized by problem alphabetically, each with a list of possible remedies, each remedy with a brief description characterizing it so you can choose the most appropriate.

Buy Homeopathic Remedies: A Quick and Easy Guide to Common Disorders and Their Homeopathic Treatments Now

This book is an exceptional introduction to the world of homeopathy.

It begins with a detailed explanation of the concepts behind this form of medicine, including the systems of the body, definitions of disease and injury, types of pain and much more. It also include basic information that correlates to all homeopathic remedies, including dosing information and contraindications. The system of dosing homeopathics can be a little confusing at first, as it comes across as a bit "backwards" (a lower number being a more concentrated tincture), and this book does an excellent job of explaining this system in a reader-friendly way.

After the numerous introductory articles, this book contains an "A-Z Prescriber" that is indispensable as a household reference. It covers mental, emotional and physical diseases, from stress to bleeding to infections and SO much more. Under each disease section, it covers a list of all the different potential remedies, with detailed explanations of the variations in symptoms that indicate one may work better than anotherthere are no "one size fits all" diagnoses or remedies in homeopathy.

As a parent, I can sleep better knowing I have this book on hand. I'm fortunate enough to live in an area where these substances are relatively easy to come by, so I have the peace of mind knowing that if my daughter has a problem, I can quickly identify the best way to help her. There is a whole section on children's diseases, from colic to chickenpox, ear infections and more.

My experiences thusfar with homeopathy have been incredible. In one instance, I slammed my finger in a sliding door so hard that it started bleeding underneath my nail, and there was a clear dark line across the entire nail. I was almost certain I was going to lose the nail, and my finger swelled up a good 5x its normal size. Enter Arnica... I applied Arnica gel to my entire finger twice that day. The swelling was completely eliminated in less than an hour, and the trapped blood began to shift and partially clear within a day. Within 2 days, the dark line has disappeared and there was just one small pocket of blood, which grew out with my nail and left no trace of the injury. I was quite impressed.

My second confirmation of homeopathy's authenticity came in the form of teething medicine. My daughter was cutting 5 teeth at the same time, and, understandably, quite miserable. I purchased a homeopathic teething gel from my local Whole Foods, which contained a combination of pain relieving and calming plant extracts. I happened to be cutting a wisdom tooth myself, so I tried it out on my tooth to see if it was any good. I was amazed that it offered faster and better relief than Orajel or similar allopathic products. It didn't completely numb my gums, just took the pain away, completely! So of course I offered it to the baby, who was instantly soothed and slept, well, like a baby :)

And my third testament to homeopathy is my experience with baby's first ear infection. I'm rather wary of antibiotics, as I have done a vast amount of research on antibiotic resistance and childhood ear infections, and recognize that 1. antibiotics increase the reccurance of ear infections because they suppress the immune system; 2. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, 80% of ear infections will clear up with no treatment; and 3. in studies, antibiotics only shortened the length of the infection by one day.

So I purchased a bottle of Dr. Sears recommended homeopathic ear drops, and I was blown away by the results. She had been completely inconsolable, screaming, kicking, running away and pulling on her ears. Within a minute of putting the drops in her ears, she stopped crying, smiled and gave me a big hug! We used the drops every 8 hours for 2 daysand that quick, the infection was gone. I remember taking a 2 week course of amoxycillin for an ear infection at the age of 11, and that didn't even work. 2 days instead of 2 weeks? No side effects? Yes please.

All of the above remedies are congruent with the prescriber in this book.

I will also add that this book covers some topics you might not expectvaccine detoxification (helping eliminate the mercury and formaldehyde used as preservatives in vaccines from your body), reproductive issues like ovarian cysts, uterine hemorrhage... a lot of things you wouldn't expect.

This book is excellent, the only thing it lacks is detailed explanations of what each remedy is, where it comes from and how it works. I understand this book is about the ailment of your body, not the herbs itself, and would be 3x the size and 3x the price if it also included detailed information on the substances themselves. I'm currently looking for the perfect "counterpart" to this book, a book about the tinctures themselves. In the meantime, the internet does suffice :) I will update my review with a product link when I find the right one.

So in a nutshell, I absolutely recommend this book and it should be on every family's bookshelfor medicine cabinet!

*Almost a mirror image of his herbal remedy book, I recommend them as companion guides*

Like his other book on herbal remedies, Asa Hershoff, ND, divides the source into an easily readable guide. He started out with a long chapter on homeopathic advantages, research on the remedies, their types, history of, and more. This include types of pain, taking the remedies, doses, and processes. The treatment index guide is broken into sections identical to the herbal guide. Each condition is listed alphabetically under its condition, with a brief intro on the problem and how to solve it, followed then by a list of homeopathic remedies by name only then 3-4 lines below. Each line has a different reason for using it. Stars are by the homeopathic remedy, signifying how recommended it is. One star means a weaker treatment, while five is obviously highly regarded.

While in no means a comprehensive 'teaching' text, it's not meant to be. Instead it's a reference that allows easy location of conditions and their treatment, with notes jotted down. Concise, clear, and good to grab in a pinch.

Want Homeopathic Remedies: A Quick and Easy Guide to Common Disorders and Their Homeopathic Treatments Discount?

Homeopathic Remedies is the BEST self-help guide to home-based treatment in the world. Why? It is simply the ONLY accurate guide to symptoms and the remedy they treat. Every other self-help homeopathic book has completely inaccurate and simply wrong information, because of a crucial thing in homeopathy called "modalities."

Modalities are simply what makes a symptom better or worse, such as time of day, hot or cold, standing or sitting, etc, etc. But the thing is, there are modalities for the person as a whole (you like hot weather or you don't) and there are completely separate modalities for INDIVIDUAL CONDITIONS. You have a headache that is better from cold clothes. But your stomach ache wants a hot water bottle.

Without this accurate information, prescribing all wrong! And every single modern author has just not gone to (much bigger) trouble of researching the individual modalities for each condition. They just use the generalized modalities of the whole person for the individual condition. Which doesn't work! Hershoff is the ONLY author who has actually done this work, and thus produced a homeopathic guidebook worthy of the name!

Besides, the illustrations and layout make this a visually easy book to use and pleasure to read. A must have for any homeopathic home library or homeopathic practitioner who wants an accurate guide to treatment.

The Natural Soap Book: Making Herbal and Vegetable-Based Soaps

The Natural Soap Book: Making Herbal and Vegetable-Based SoapsIf you are looking for an solid foundation of information for the cold-process method of soapmaking, get this book and its companion, "The Soapmaker's Companion" by the same author. This book provides a great deal of information to making cold-process (mostly vegetable-based) soaps. Some of the material is a little heavy (the parts on the chemistry of soapmaking) but is very important information if you want to learn to be creative and create your own recipes. The recipes are quite large, as some other reviewers commented, and the great thing about the companion book is the smaller recipes. You will not be able to find most of these ingredients at your local supermarket (e.g. pomace olive oil and palm oil). The recipes call for the real ingredients used in the industry that you will have to find but with the popularity of the Internet, finding these ingredients is much easier than it used to be. This book may not be a one-stop-shop for information, but this book and the Companion come VERY close!

I really enjoy the straight forward writing style of Ms. Cavitch. She speaks to you like you're having a conversation with a good friend.

In the Introduction she gives some basic chemistry of soap lessons which are very easy for the non chemist to understand. Then she goes on to explain different types of soap, different fats and oils what when you might want to use each. All through the beginning are charming, little stories about real soap makers and their businesses. What a nice touch.

This seems to be a very well thought out book with just oodles of information on just about every aspect of making soap. She's even included a small section on blending essential oils and give some suggested blending for certain scents.

The coloring section isn't as lengthy as I think it could be, but it is a good start for the beginner, especially for those who want to start using herbs for coloring soaps.

I can't say I agree with Ms. Cavitch on her temperatures explanation. But that does seem to be more of a preference thing. She feels that vegetable soaps made over 95 degrees F are problematic, but I have never found that to be the case. Actually... I have found the opposite to be true.

Weighing your essential oils in advance as she suggests you do in Step 1, is going to give you a problem unless you tightly seal it. I learned right away that they will evaporate into the air. What you weighed out before you started stirring will be partly gone by the time you use it! She does however, later in another section, mention that you should tightly seal the container.

A picture, an actual photograph, of what 'trace' means would be nice. Would it kill these authors to say something like, "thick like pudding"? No one can ever figure out what is meant by the word trace. Newbees sort of freak out about it, and I can understand that.

There is one thing that I really don't like about her recipes. That is, some of the items are in pounds and some of the items are in grams. Unless you're good at converting or your scale does both, you're going to have a problem. It would have been much nicer had she offered all items in both grams and ounces and then you could use what you use. I can see why she's doing it. Grams offer much better accuracy with those items like lye and grapefruit seed extract. But many who aren't interested in doing conversions, won't use the recipes. :(

Cavitch is working with that old, bothersome method of matching your lye solution temp with your oil temp at about 80 degrees F. I don't recommend this method as it causing a soap separation many times when the temp drops and saponification slows to a crawl. But a good many people still use this method.

Her suggestions that a mostly olive oil soap can trace in about 7 minutes I don't agree with at all. I have hand stirred more like 3 hours for mostly olive soap. I wouldn't want anyone to think that they can actually accomplish this and not have under stirred soap. Pomace (a lower grade of olive) will trace quickly, but I don't think that can be done in less than 1/2 hour with hand stirring.

I guess the really big problem people have with Susan Cavitch is her method of figuring lye. What she does works, however, soap makers don't 'discount' lye, they add more fats/oils. It is quite confusing if you talk to someone who figures things with her discount method. It is just one of those annoying things. Some say the glass is half full, others half empty. Well, for Cavitch alone, the glass is half empty.

There are many recipes in this book and also a section on things you can add to the recipes and how to add them, such as herbs, superfat oils, etc., to make some varied soaps. There is a chapter on suggestions on wrapping soaps decoratively which is fun too.

All in all, I think this is a high quality book. I think the actual method of making soap is outdated now, but aren't they all? We have finally gone beyond the Ann Bramson book, but the authors have not caught up yet.

I have my little pet peeves about the book, but I think everyone should have a copy. All that chemistry is good to have so that you can talk to Dr. Bob later and actually understand him! :) . . .

I have been making soap for about 3 years and I have had a lot of botched batches of soap along the way. Most of my mistakes were by following the advice of "experts" who have written books about how to make soap. At the beginning I bought Susuan Miller Cavitch's book on how to make Natural Soap and Herbal Soaps and I tried to follow her advice. I couldn't figure out how to calculate the lye. You have to be a "rocket scientist" to figure it out if you try to do it her way. I followed her advice on putting wax paper in the bottom of my box and the wax paper turned to mush and I couldn't get the soap out without mashing it all up. I started out by making huge batches of soap like she said and I found that when a batch of soap doesn't turn out you have wasted huge amounts of time, effort and money. And what do you do with all that soap unless you are in the business of selling soap? And what beginner is? I think l-2 pound batches are much better. You can experiment and learn your craft and not have huge amounts of money lost if it fails. She has no recipes for small batches. Also I think 80 degrees is way too low for the fat temperature. I have found that ll0 degrees works out for me every time. Soap making is really easy, not nearly as scarey as she makes it look. I did like the sources at the end of the book and have found some really good suppliers from it. All in all, I think her book is interesting to read, but just don't take it too seriously if you are a beginner. If you have been making soap for a while, then pick it up and read it.

The only problem I have with this book is the sheer quantity of soap each recipe makes. I have never made 40 bars of soap at one time and cannot imagine ever doing so. I'm not sure what I would do with 40 bars of soap. It's more fun for me to make several small batches of soap for variety. It would have been more helpful had Cavitch included information on making half batches as well.

The author uses no animal products in her soap, which may be a plus for some, but I find lard and tallow to make nice soaps for much less money. Of course, this is a matter of preference to the soap maker.

Frankly, I wish I had bought another soap making book.

Never Go to the Hospital Alone: And Other Insider Secrets for Getting Mistake-Free Health Care from

Never Go to the Hospital Alone: And Other Insider Secrets for Getting Mistake-Free Health Care from Your Doctor and HospitalWhat an eye opener! This concise book is more than just an engaging insider's view of U.S. physicians and hospitals. It is a highly readable tale of the good, the bad, and the ugly in medical care. Plus, the reader gets, simple, accurate, information to research her own health care options. My husband and I both just read it and vow to follow through on checking our providers and our hospital choices. We've already learned that, in our case, our local hospital is NOT the place to go for cardiac care!

The author doesn't slam American medicine --quite the contrary. But he knows the pitfalls and medical mistakes being made in this country every day and tells the reader precisely how to avoid becoming one of those mistakes. Read this little book and then give it to your adult children or aging parents. You might well save your life or theirs.

This guy knows his stuff. Harden reveals the inner workings of hospitals in layman's terms to provide a very readable resource for increasing the likelihood of a successful hospital stay and decreasing the possibility of falling victim to systemic shortcomings.

Meniere Man And The Astronaut. The Self Help Book For Meniere's Disease

Meniere Man And The Astronaut. The Self Help Book For Meniere's DiseaseThe author was struck with the disease in his prime, 46-years-old. He lovingly shares how he overcame this debilitating disease in hopes that it will help others who are faced with the same frightening challenge.

In spite of the fact that the cause is unknown and there is no well-defined treatment, he chose to not let the disease defeat him. He won the battle by changing his attitude about the disease and taking back control of his life through exercise, diet, vitamins, alternative therapies and positive mental training.

He urges those who are facing the same battle to create their own personal regime and take control. He then proceeds to give you detailed instructions on the steps he took to take back his life. He covers so much that is would be impossible to list them all in this short review, but some points that jumped out at me were:

1. The importance of finding your triggers and stressors

2. How to cope with an attack, the hearing loss, and diminished cognitive abilities.

3. Medications, surgical options, and alternative therapies.

He emphasizes that the only thing that stands in the way of successfully managing the illness is attitude. It is important to understand that there are viable choices that can be made.

He ends the book with a short chapter titled: Laugh. Love. Life. . . . then, follows it with "100 ways of coping with Meniere's."

Highly recommended.

Kudos to the author for having the strength to tackle a subject that hits so close to home.

One by one he skillfully addresses each aspect of the disease; from symptom recognition, to the effect of each symptom on the human body, and finally to the options available in treating these debilitating symptoms.

Not only did the author present a smorgasbord of pertinent information, but did so from a first-person point of view. Not only in a way that was easily understood, but in a fashion that tugged at the reader's heartstrings as well.

If you a looking for the definitive `read' on Meniere's disease this is the book for you.

It has helped me tremendously in dealing with my sister's husband.

I was unsure of what to expect when I started to read this book, but it quickly became apparent that it is in fact, a truly uplifting story. Both well written and well structured, it takes the reader on one man's incredible journey from the complete despair at suffering the debilitating Meneire decease to inspirational hope for others in his position. It's pages contain a lot of helpful information but it is also an entertaining read.

This book could only be written by someone who has been to hell and back. It's poignancy tugs at the heart strings at times and yet the story is inspiring and full of hope. The author writes with authority and a hugely positive attitude, which makes me think that this book will be of immense help to anyone suffering any chronic illness.

I feel so strongly about the message of hope this book conveys, that I have recommended it to my daughter-in-law who, as a young mother herself, has suffered through a difficult decease and life-changing surgery.

This is a definate 5 stars for me.
