Weight Watchers Family Power: 5 Simple Rules for a Healthy-Weight Home (Miller-Kovach, Weight Watche

Weight Watchers Family Power: 5 Simple Rules for a Healthy-Weight HomeI wasn't really sure what I was getting when I ordered this book. The book is based on a new program being piloted now by Weight Watchers. The program, in limited areas now teaches parents on how to encourage a "Healthy Weight" home. What surprised me is how different this program is from the one designed by Weight Watchers for adults as part of their nationally available program. For one, they strongly discourage parents from placing all but the most obese of children on a diet and then only with the close supervision of a physician.

The book trains parents on the "5 Simple Rules."

1. Focus on wholesom, nutritious foods.

2. Include treats.

3. Aim to keep nonhomework screen time at two hours (or less) per day.

4. Try to be active an hour per day.

5. The Rules apply to everyone in the home.

While that should tell you all you need to know about the program there is so much more. My daughter 4, does not currently have a weight issue, however as an over obese person since childhood I watch her closely to attempt to prevent her from having the same weight issues I have. I was shocked to learn all of the things I am doing wrong. Everything from what snacks/treats I give her to forcing her to clean her plate, and at least a dozen other things.

One of the things I loved about this book it there was no encouragement to make drastic life altering adjustments to your life. In fact, the book encourages gentler simple steps your family can carry out. It doesn't tell you what order to complete the rules in, but to start with the ones you know you can do. The book offers real life concerns and solutions that even the most out of shape family can take to heart.

The book also discourages you from weighing your children more than when they are at the physician's office or even discussing weight in front of them. If anyone in your house struggles with their weight this book is a must have. I wish it had been available to my parents when I was young, I only hope I can learn enough from it to prevent the same mistakes in my children.

ONCE I STARTED READING THIS BOOK I COULDN'T BELIEVE HOW SIMPLE IT IS TO MAKE SMALL CHANGES THAT MAKE A HUGE POSITIVE INFLUENCE ON MY FAMILY. FAMILY POWER IS AN EASY TO FOLLOW, EYE OPENING, BOOK THAT HAS HELPED ME GET MY FAMILY ON THE RIGHT TRACK FOR ONCE. I DIDN'T REALIZE HOW I HAD MYSELF SO TRAINED TO UNCONSCIOUSLY RAISE A LAZY FAMILY UNTIL I STARTED USING THE STEPS IN THIS BOOK. I AM NOW GOING TO MAKE SURE MY CHILDREN DON'T DEVELOP THE LAZY HABITS THAT GO HAND IN HAND WITH OBESITY. IT'S A GREAT EYE OPENER!!! GOOK LUCK

This is a very easy book to read, and the suggestions it offers are real and practical. You don't have to change your entire lifestyle, and that's what I liked about the book. And too, the five steps it recommeds have already been put into use by families, and they've all been proven to work. It definately has helped my family. I've already seen a difference in waist size and attitude.

Practical Massage for Home Use

Practical Massage for Home UseEasy read! Very useful and easy to go back and review! I have learned so much and use the book to reference often!

I don't know much about massage, but it is something I've recently become interested in. I wanted to be able to give a great massage, but I had no experience and didn't know where to begin. I wanted to learn more, and this was a great book in instructing me on everything I needed to know in plain English. There were some great illustrations to help guide me. Not only was this book informative, but it was also a pleasure to read. It didn't feel like like I was reading an instruction manual. Since reading this book, I can now give massages with confidence. Who needs to spend money on a massage therapist?!

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has in interest in massage.

Spiritual Midwifery

Spiritual MidwiferyI think I'm the first _man_ to review this book. In a way that's kind of sad, but hey, I don't mind going first, fellas. Besides, I've reviewed just about everything of Stephen Gaskin's I could find, and it's about time I reviewed Ina May's book.

And here in Ohio we've got a Mennonite midwife named Freida Miller who's doing time in prison. Why? Because she saved the life of a birthing mother by giving her prescription medication without a license. Worse, she's not even in prison for dispensing the meds; she's in prison because she refuses to reveal the name of the doctor who _gave_ her the meds in the first place. This displeases me and causes me to question the legal and pharmaceutical establishments even more than I already did, which is a lot. So consider this review my little blow for the revolution.

Ina May Gaskin wrote the book on midwifery -four times, in fact, as the fourth edition of the book was published in 2002 and it gets longer every time. The new edition is updated with the usual stuff, including yet more stories from the parents and midwives at the Farm (including some stories from the babies, now all grown up, who were the subjects of the _original_ stories) and a new preface by Ina May. And if you're reading this page, you don't need me to tell you that it's the bible of practical midwifery.

What you may _not_ already know is what a spiritual book it is. Of course the title is _Spiritual Midwifery_, but some readers may be inclined to write that off as hippie jargon. As other reviewers have noted, there is some hippie jargon in the book, but I don't think you should read "around" it or "past" it. You should read _through_ it; it's part of the point. The medium really is sometimes the message, and this is the appropriate language for the concepts Ina May wants to lay on you.

What Ina May wants you to know, what she and the midwives at the Farm have successfully shown for thirty years and counting, is that birthing really is (or can be) a sacrament and that _how we be_ has a profound effect on _how we birth_. As Stephen remarks somewhere, the Farm midwives have successfully demonstrated that _vibes are real_. This is good news and it's important to more than birthing mothers -even to more than women.

I don't mean to minimize the importance of the practical midwifing aspects of the book, either; it's just that I didn't read the book for that reason myself. (I was present at the births of both of my children, but they were born in the hospital as my wife preferred.)

The thing is, Ina May and Stephen are good people. In fact they manage to be both kind _and_ competent -a difficult trick and one that I certainly haven't mastered myself. And there are lots of other good people represented in this book, in the stories and in the pictures. (The folks in the photos look like folks you'd want to meet. If you look at them right, you can actually see their souls.)

So this review is partly to help spread the word about midwifery and partly to help spread the word about these good people. Vibes _are_ real, it _does_ matter how we be, and don't let anybody tell you any different.

When I was pregnant with my first baby, what I hungered for were real stories of birth, and especially positive stories, because these are so rare in our medicalised birth culture. My copy of Spiritual Midwifery is a dog-eared third edition, but it's been a great companion to me through the homebirths of my four babies, reassuring and reminding me how simple and ecstatic birth can be.

One reviewer could not believe that all the stories in Spiritual Midwifery could be so positive; I refer her to my article on Ecstatic Birth, which details the scientific evidence for birth ecstasy as our hormonal blueprint for labour, first published by Mothering and expanded for my book "Gentle Birth, Gentle Mothering: a Doctor's Guide to Natural Birth and Early Parenting Choices". (Read the article on my website www.sarahjbuckley.com) It's the plethora of interventions that make birth unpleasantand not necessarily safer, as I document

Another reviewer responseIna May recommends drinking vodka to delay an early labour: IV alcohol was previously widely used in hospital for women going into premature labour, followed by 3 days of whisky 60 ml (2 oz) every 8 hours.

As a family physician, I also have to mention the excellent section, "Instructions to midwives" at the back, with easy to understand explanations and diagrams that I would recommend for any birth attendant; midwife, physician or parents. I also appreciate the sections on stillbirth and difficult births, and of course the gorgeous photos.

Spiritual Midwifery is a book that has stood the test of time, and continues to inspire and inform women and their carers (including myself) about how amazing and ecstatic birth can be, and the respect that we owe birthing families and newborn babies.

PS If you don't like the hippy language, buy Ina May's Guide to Childbirth, which has more contemporary stories and excellent information about modern birth care. Even better, buy them both!

I devoured an earlier edition of this book more than a decade before I actually had children, and am enjoying the new "birthing tales" added to the fourth edition. Since my husband was extremely uncomfortable with the prospect of home birth, I gave birth to our three children in hospital, with a wonderful female OB/GYN guiding me through one uncomplicated vaginal delivery; one surprise breech resulting in a C-section; one induced, successful VBAC. The hospital was the right place for me, it turned out. I really believe that the joy of these "birth days" was enhanced by having learned so much from the wisdom of all of the "ladies"--Ina May's down-home term--their husbands, and midwives who contributed their first-person stories to this fine book.

From "Spiritual Midwifery," you'll learn a great deal about your body, your newborn baby, and about the many, many things that can and do comprise pregnancy, labor, delivery, and the postpartum period. Even the very few sad outcomes inspire, and in the least smarmy way possible. I also would call this book appropriate to give to a teenager who is curious about the process of birth.

In retrospect, this fine book beats the unduly jumpy "What To Expect When You're Expecting" by a country mile.

I'm a student midwife and Ina May is revered in the 'birth world' I exist in. This book isas the many reviews can attest toalmost a Bible of natural child birth and the regeneration of midwifery practice in the US. My understanding is that I am reading the most current version of this book...

The good: Getting to hear and see pictures of many families who went through their births on the Farm was great. I am very interested in birth stories and the internal mechanisms that women/families use to cope with birth. Also, I very much enjoyed finding several stories about loss and unexpected outcomes. It's wonderful to see these kinds of stories and occurances shared for others to use as a map through a similar circumstance. Sometimes, you've never met anyone who's had a loss. Knowing you're not the only one who's felt the way you do is an amazing comfort. Another positive of this book were the stories about the Amnish women who had Farm midwives attend their births. The cultural differences were really interestingI wish Ina May would write a whole book about these births!

The bad: Ok, first and foremost, there were several times that INACCURATE information was put forth in this book. At one point, Ina May suggests that a woman 'toughen up' her nipples during pregnancy if they are sensitive to get them ready for nursing. That's just wrong. She also says parents whould use alcohol on a baby's umbilical cord and around the base on the stomachagain, a care method that has been proven to actually increase healing time. Perhaps these things are minor, but honestly, for someone who is so respectedand who many people will look to for definitive information, this kind of thing should be corrected.

Secondly, I needed a 'Hippie-to-English' dictionary to understand many of the stories! If I hear the words 'tantric', 'psychedelic', 'telepathic' or 'high' again, I think I'll scream. If I read one more description about how someone looked "real soft and pretty" or "real golden and pretty" or "real pink and pretty" again, I'll cry. Honestly, it was as bad as if I had to read someone saying something was 'dope' or 'crack-a-lackin' over and over. The words don't really mean ANYTHING to people who weren't hippies. Maybe invite those who originally wrote the pieced to update them into modern, non-hippie language? I really found it so distracting...

Finally, I got the senseand perhaps I'm totally wrong about thisthat if a woman had trouble dealing with the pain of her contractions it was her own fault. Women were expected to mentally transform the pain into 'an interesting sensation which gets the baby out'. Now, I understand that fear and tension can increase the amount of pain felt during birth, but it seems that the women were expected to be laughing, joking and 'giving some' to others during their labor & delivery. They were discouraged from 'complaining' during their 'rushes'... I feel that placing these expectations on a laboring mother is unfair. Pain is experienced differently for different women. For some women, labor can be an ecstaticeven orgasmicexperience. But to place on a woman that there's a 'good' and a 'bad' way to labor & birth is just... I don't knowit seemed unreasonable to me... Like everyone is being forced into a certain birth disposition and if they don't conform they fail as a 'paddy-ass'.

Anyway, just my two cents. Many people obviously enjoyed the book more that I did. And I really did WANT to like the book so much more than I didI wanted to enter into the spiritual side of the midwifery... Oh, well...

Yes, the birth stories in this book ARE real. Real women birthing real babies. Listening to their stories can help prepare you for birth whether this is your first child or your tenth.

One of the things I appreciate most about this book is that it discusses in detail aspects of childbirth that no medically-oriented, mainstream childbirth manual will touch, e.g. what it's like when your baby dies. Play-by-play descriptions.

Children with birth defects. These are things I want to know about.

If you are one of those women who doesn't want to hear about any pain, plans on checking yourself into the hospital at the first contraction, and putting your doctor in charge, then you REALLY need to read this book! I especially recommend this book to women who don't know many other women who have birthed a child naturally, because you're not going to get this information anywhere else. If you only hear stories from the point of view of women who are drugged, you're not getting the whole story.

How to Cut Children's Hair

How to Cut Children's HairI complimented a friend of mine on how nice and neat her four children's hair always looked and wanted to know if her hairdreser was very expensive. When she told me that she cut her kids hair I didn't believe her.

she loaned me her copy of How to Cut Childrens Hair to try out and I was able to to cut my son and daughters myself. I'm usually not very good at following directions, but the pictures made it very easy to follow. I even cut my husbands hair now. I just bought my own copy to use. This book s excelent. The only drawback is that now my brother and sister want me to cut their kids hair too. Also, this is the funniest how to book I've ever read.

How to Cut Children's Hair is a really good book. Beautiful drawings help so much! Instructions were clear. Gave my young grandson a haircut and it looks good. I tried cutting my husband's hair following Larry Dunlap's instructions and that turned out okay too. Like the good humor and the clever tips on how to keep kids still and safety tips too. learning how to hold the scissors from the drawings made a huge differnce (I tried to cut his hair before and it was terible this time it was pretty darn good and I think I will get better using this book) Seeing all the styles shown was nice too and also tips on buying scisors etc. I would giv e this a 10 star rating!

Practically Posh: The Smart Girls' Guide to a Glam Life

Practically Posh: The Smart Girls' Guide to a Glam LifeThis is a "Guide to Life" that you and all of your girlfriends would love! The author's writing style makes you feel like you are one of her BFFs. There are tips on asking for a raise, for decorating your home, how to "impress a dude", great drugstore beauty products and even recipes for entertaining. The book has plenty of visuals and is so well put together that you can pick it up and read 5-10 pages without even realizing. This is the pefect book for busy women on the go who want to uncover the secrets of living a posh life, practically a feat not easily accomplished, but with Moreno's help a possibility for all of us glam girls. This will be on my "give list" for Christmas this year!

I absolutely love this book! It has so much great information delivered in such witty and charming ways. Being in my mid 20's it seems to be just about the right age group to learn from the information before it's too late. I would highly recommend it to any woman graduating college and hoping to make a graceful transition into a more adult world.

I purchased this book three times, however, it was not out of excitement to share it with others. My first copy, after taking it home and reading straight through the first half of it, had several pages come loose from the binding and fall straight out. I took it back and exchanged it for another one, which after flipping through a few more pages, ran into the same problem. I took my second copy back to the store and ordered a third copy, hoping that this time I'd have more luck. Sure enough, once it came in and I started to flip through it and check the pages, a few fell out of my THIRD copy. Unfortunately I simply returned it and didn't bother buying a new copy.

I LOVE this book and wish I had a copy of it still at home, but unless they reprint it with a stronger binding I doubt it will grace my bookshelf anytime in the near future. Very disappointed in the structure.

Did anyone else have this problem?

I am a single woman in my late-thirties. I wish I had this book in my late twenties and early thirties. It contains tons of information that I had to learn by trial and error as well as other tips that I did not know about then but sound like a great idea now. The book is fun & entertaining but also practical and should be kept as a reference book. It's a nice starting point to building your "grown-up" life.

Practically Posh by Robin Moreno is almost like reading a magazine with lots of little articles about how to find less expensive solutions to the things you would like to fill your life with.

It deals with everything from smart shopping trips to the grocery store to how to find your own style. It also includes subjects as how to get a promotion, being a trendy hostess on a budget and meeting the parents for the first time. The chapters are all divided into small 1-3 pages subchapters, and Moreno shares personal stories and tips related to the different subchapters.

Practically Posh seems to be an attempt to find cost effective ways to keep up a trendy lifestyle, and it is mostly geared towards single women. I think the most appropriate readership would be college to recent college graduate females, while it might also appeal to single women paying high rents.

I enjoyed reading Practically Posh, and the book is an easy read with lots of wonderful photos. However, I did feel that the book was a bit superficial, in the fact that it did not really go in depth on any of the subjects. It was almost as if I had to rush through the process of being practically posh.

It is not a book for frugal moms, avid coupon clippers or penny pinchers, but I can definitely see how it would come in handy for women who are used to being, or wish to be, big spenders.

Want Complete Colon Cleanse: The At-Home Detox Program to Restore Good Health, Boost Vitality, and Ensure Discount?

This book contains some good information about colon cleanses and why they can be beneficial no matter what your state of health or what disease you have.

The book does a good job in explaining why avoiding toxic cleaning and personal care products is so important for health and provides a handy chart showing how many toxic things we may be exposed to each day.

A 6 day fruit-only cleanse is recommended as is eating a fruit only breakfast after a cleanse and meat only once a week. The author has a bias towards a high-carb and low-fat mostly vegetarian diet which will not work at all well for many of us. Nor will a diet high in grains and dairy foods as the book recommends also. The book contains very little information about food allergies and intolerances which is a huge omission in a book about toxin avoidance and lowering the total load of the body.

The author favours colon hydrotherapy over enemas and says that they are far superior. The book contains lots of information about what healthy stools should be like. Information is given on abdominal massage but I found the text on it hard to decipher as it was quite faint. I'm also not sure how anyone manages to massage their abdomen for half an hour (as recommended) to be honest either, about 3 or 4 minutes seems like ages to me. But any amount is still helpful, I guess, and you can only do what you can.

This book contains some good information about colon cleanses. But as a book about treating illness generally it leaves an enormous amount out and isn't suitable as a primary resource for healing from serious disease. Supplements are barely even mentioned, nor is the use of FIR saunas and the diet information given is quite poor. Despite what is popular at the moment we need far more than just lots of fruit and vegetables to have all we need to detoxify properly. Nutritional deficiencies are just as big a cause of disease as a high toxic load and omitting good information on supplementation is vital when discussing disease treatment. Nutrients are lost from the body every time a toxic compound is detoxified and these must be replaced.

This book is okay and parts of it are good but there are far better books than this out there that are far more comprehensive and better researched.
