Shared Stories from Daughters of Alzheimer's: Writing a Path to Peace

Shared Stories from Daughters of Alzheimer's: Writing a Path to PeaceThis book is a collection of personal stories shared by daughters of patients diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. The shock, the anger, the grief, the stress etc. are brought out with sincerity and honesty by the different authors. The editing by Persis R. Granger is by and large excellent and the book is highly readable (though my sharp eye caught some slips, they won't interfere with the reading). The book is not easy to read because of the emotions that are shared but is a valuable addition to the growing literature on Alzheimer's disease, a progressive and as of today incurable form of dementia, whose final diagnosis can only be made through a postmortem!

More and more people are becoming victims of Alzheimer's (partly because of increasing life span) and caring for them when they fail to recognize themselves and their care givers is no easy task. Relationships get affected apart from financial difficulties. Sending the person to an institution for care is one of the toughest decisions and the stories give an intimate look at the emotional trauma of the care givers. The book is thus moving at many places. In a country like India, where elders are supposed to be taken care of by children and there is no real infrastructure for their separate living, the relationships are affected severely due to the stress and strain of chronic illness and consequent burden on the care givers. Some of the stories in the book will thus strike a chord for such readers too!

Though the book focuses on Alzheimer's, any chronic illness that makes the person dependent on others causes similar problems and thus the book would be relevant to patients and caregivers of other chronic and debilitating diseases.

The book has a foreword by Pat Jimison, an introduction by Kathleen Adams and resources section at the end. However, alternative, holistic treatment options if any are left out and it is hoped that the future editions and a website will carry such information (as of now there is no specific website for the book). A lot of research on the role of antioxidants and herbs in delaying the onset of or improvement of Alzheimer's is now coming up and the book / website could have covered that.

I went through many emotions as I was reading this book since my own mother passed away in 2003 at the age of 89 and I felt (and feel even now) that I could have been a better son as far as her care is concerned. Her presence in the house was not stress free and many times I felt helpless! Journaling as suggested in the book is a good and effective way of coming to terms with the emotions that one cannot process immediately.

I recommend this book to all caregivers and even to chronic patients to give them an idea of the life ahead for those in early stages of Alzheimer's.

The Dry Eye Remedy: The Complete Guide to Restoring the Health and Beauty of Your Eyes

The Dry Eye Remedy: The Complete Guide to Restoring the Health and Beauty of Your EyesPros:

-It offers comprehensive and up-to-date info (as of the date of its publication) about the latest in dry eyes.

-It offers all-around practical advice to dry eye patients who may have otherwise lost hope.

-The depth in which the topics are covered seems just right for most patients.

Minor cons:

-Artificial tears (such as most Genteal brands) that contain special non-irritating or disappearing preservatives were not emphasized strongly enough. IMO, such drops are better than those that are entirely without preservatives, because preservatives after all do serve a useful and obvious function. Drops without preservatives often come in single-use vials and are therefore harder to deal with if you want to reuse them for cost effectiveness.

-Alleged homeopathic remedies are presented in a largely neutral or optimistic view, but the scientific fact is that homeopathic drugs are bogus and don't really have any medical effect beyond that of placebo. As such, the book was somewhat complacent towards homeopathy, and I feel that this takes away from proper scientifically or empirically sound remedies.

-There are a few minor typos that seem like they could have easily been caught prior to publication with a bit of extra effort.

-There is no hardcover version.

I definitely recommend this book to anyone experiencing the condition, although if you do read it, it's always better to let this not be the only book you read about the topic. There are other good recent books on the topic that you also may want to read afterwards, both to reinforce the important points and to learn other info.

Board-certified ophthalmologist and founder/director of the Dry Eye Clinic Robert Latkany presents The Dry Eye Remedy: The Complete Guide to Restoring the Health and Beauty of Your Eyes, a guide written especially to help the 77 million Americans (and millions of others worldwide) who suffer from "dry eye", also known as dysfunctional tear syndrome. Often beginning as a minor irritation, dry eye causes lines, wrinkles, bags, and redness, and traditional remedies such as eyelid surgery or eyedrops can potentially make the problem worse. Offering recommendations to improve eye health and appearance without resorting to surgery, The Dry Eye Remedy includes advice for improving one's home environment, proper nutrition, how to set up a "home eye spa", which over-the-counter remedies are harmful, the pros and cons of medical treatments such as hormone therapy or punctal plugs, and a guide to deciding upon the dry eye therapy that works best for the reader. A list of resources and an index round out this solid guide, accessible to readers of all backgrounds, and highly recommended for anyone who cherishes their eyes.

I am so glad I ordered this book. I was having a lot of pain and discomfort and had been to three different eye doctors with no success. After reading The Dry Eye Remedy I felt hopeful that my condition could be treated and managed successfully. Because of the suggestion to stay with the restasis treatment for several weeks, I am virtually symptom free and feel as if I have my life back.

I only wish Dr. Latkany had written this book 10 years ago when I first began noticing symptoms of dry eye related to a thyroid condition and excessive computer use. With his commonsense approach to healing, Dr. Latkany explains how lifestyle changes and medical treatments can work together to combat this modern day plague. Following the excellent suggestions in this book for only a few days, I've already noticed significant improvement.

My eyes have been watering for months. I tried over the counter remedies as well as a Restasis prescription from my doctor. The Restasis worked for a while but never really completely got rid of the problem.

I tried TheraTears mentioned in the book and although it said it would take 4-8 weeks to be effective, I noticed a lot of relief in just three weeks. It's a natural way to go, and I much prefer that to drugs.

I finally think I've found what I was looking for.

Where There Is No Doctor

Where There Is No DoctorThis book is written in very easy to read english. Which is part of its value. Not being in the medical field and if I had to deliver a baby in the bush in Africa I want the book to be written as simply as possible. The drawings are a bit better than stick men but they get the point across. My wife and I lived in West Africa and quite often in the bush. Places where you do not find a doctor and the hospitals are less than our American medicine cabinets. This book has helped through malaria; yellow fever; insect bites; dehydration; water purification; etc. These were areas that we truly faced and the book took us through. Yes, we survived!! If you know anyone in the 3rd. world, do them a great service and get them this book. No missionary or business men to the 3rd. world have any business leaving without this book.

This book is amazing! I worked in Guatemala for around 8 months in community development, with a rural indigenous pueblo. We tried to get in as many doctors as possible, but when that failed, we could always use this book--the diagrams of each disease (especially the skin diseases, prevalent in Central America) helped us to decide how to address each person's health concerns. I only wish there was a copy in K'iche' for the community leaders to have to use!

The forms included in the book for basic check ups and keeping medical records will be helpful in the future when we set up a clinic. I can't emphasize what a straight forward, useful, and practical book this is. If you intend to work anywhere in a developing country, with health or not, you need this book.

This book was designed for primitive health care. It isn't set up to turn the layman into a surgeon.

For what it is; it does an excellent job. A huge block of it has little use here in the states, but there is at least one good tip on every page. Once you move past the political and socioeconomic points, it's a wonderful learning tool.

One thing that is often over looked; Hesperian the publisher distributes this and countless other books for FREE. Their whole philosophy is medicine should be cheap or free and is a world wide entitlement not a privilege.

HINT, HINT go to Hesperian.org and while your at it Google "Ships Captains Medical Guide." This is also a free down load and packed full of good info.

We have been taking medical work teams to Haiti for several years. Our teams have used so many copies of this book to help us through so many diagnosis and treatment problems. We work in remote areas with no other medical help and this book has helped us through many situations! It is so creative.

This is an invaluable book for travel to the less developed parts of our shared world. I have given several copies to villagers for their empowerment when little medical help was available. As a physician I found the book both readable and accurate and as a priest the concern for the poor was evident and despite my opposition to abortion on the whole I can still recommend it. Classic Sourdoughs: A Home Baker's Handbook

Classic Sourdoughs: A Home Baker's HandbookThis book really is for the home baker who doesn't have the special ovens and tools of the artisans like Daniel Leader's Bread Alone or Nancy Singleton"s La Brea Bakery. Ed Wood's book gives instructions that can be used with any sourdough starter although I have produced far better sourdoughs with his starters than any I captured myself. There isn't a baker's yeast recipe in the entire book. If you're a novice baker or an old hand, you can learn a lot about sourdoughs from this book.

This is the only book I have found that really tells how to make sourdough bread the right way without having to use yeast. The book gives explicit instructions from the moment the starter comes from the refrigerator until the finished loaf leaves the pan. The step by step methods tell how to produce an active starter every time so the bread always rises well.

Each recipe gives different options for length of proofing cycles using different proofing temperatures. I was never able to control the temperature during proofing until I read the description for making an inexpensive proofing box described in the book. It made all the difference between success and failure.

I began following this author quite a while ago including reading ealier books because there wasn't that much information about baking sourdough bread. He has simplified the directions a little but I was never successful with his directions until I took a course at King Arthur and discovered that baking sourdoughs isn't all that complicated. Now I make naturally leavened bread almost every week. I finally trashed the silly "proof box" that Mr. Wood recommends. I occasionally dip into this book to try the recipes and I'm pretty sure some of them have significant errors (the SF sourdough turns out more like a ciabatta because either the flour or water measurments are wrong). If you want a really good book on bread baking check out "Bread A Baker's Book of Techniques and Recipes" by Jeffrey Hamelman. It has lots of good sourdough recipes based on solid baking formulas.

The thing I liked best about Dr. Wood's new book was the section on doing sourdoughs in bread machines. For the last 10 years I've been totally frustrated trying to get a decent sourdough out of a machine. Now, I'm turning out a perfect sourdough with the sourness I really like and the loaf comes out with that open texture with all the big holes of a real San Francisco sourdough.

I have used the recipes in this book and they work pretty well with the Sourdough starter from King Arthur Flour I then purchased some starters from Ed Wood and followed the instructions in the book. When they did not revive (they came dried) his basic reply was "tough" even though they claim you will get a refund. Since the book is an infomercial for his starters I would think they would be a little more friendly!!

The Busy Mom's Ultimate Fitness Guide

The Busy Mom's Ultimate Fitness GuideLet Me Propose Some Alternate Titles For This Book:

"Totally Realistic Advice On How Busy Moms CAN find the Time for Exercise"

"Busting EVERY False Belief & Myth That's Been Keeping You From Achieving Your Fitness Goalsl"

" Great Answers Every Fitness Questions You've Ever Wondered About and Didn't Know Who To Ask"

Can you tell I liked this book?

Seriously! What I liked best is that it totally helped me identify & "work through" 2 major stumbling blocks that were keeping me from incorporating exercise into my life.

First, I used to believe that if I didn't do at least 30 minute workout it wasn't worth it to do any. Now "More is better than less, but some is better than none" is my mantra!

Second, I used to think I had to exercise at the same time, all the time. and if I didn't I should just forget it until I could build the habit of doing it at the same time all the time. Well, that advice may work for non-moms but Cathy has shown me that we have to squeeze it in when we can and has given me load of ideas on HOW to do it!

As a personal trainer, I was impressed with the information Cathy gives in her book--but I was even more impressed by her sane approach to fitness. Everyone (not just busy moms!) has days where they know they need to exercise, but can't fit the time in. Cathy's got a solution for those days, and more. And the way she writes about these solutions makes you feel like it's OK to have a less-strenuous workout when you just can't fit it in.

No guilt, no stress, just good advice, well-presented. If you are a mom, know a mom, or are just insanely busy, you should read this book!

This book is an awesome guide to help motivate Mom's to take some time for themselves and their exercise needs. One of my favorite things about this book is it helps Mom's realize that any exercise is better than no exercise. Cathy gives several examples of how to get started and make exercise a part of your routine, even if it is only a couple of short workouts a week. Cathy helps Mom's put themselves on their prioity list and helps them realize that they too are important!
