The Decision Tree: How to make better choices and take control of your health

The Decision Tree: How to make better choices and take control of your healthAs a physician with a public health background, I have a healthy amount of scepticism when 'the next great book' comes along and claims to change the way we live. However, while reading Goetz' book, it didn't take long for me to realize I was in for a wonderful surprise. Perhaps it is his background as an editor at Wired magazine that makes his writing so engaging. Combine that with a solid grounding in the public health arena and the result is impressive. Although written with the patient in mind, this book will serve as an invalubale tool for clinical practitioners and epidemiologists alike. It opens a window into the field of medicine that I found fascinating and highly educational. More importantly, it gives us a glimpse at the way the doctor-patient relationship will look in the future. And, whether we like it or not, as Goetz eloquently reminds us, we would be wise to take notice now.

When it comes to assessing the problems with our health care system and identifying ways to make it better, this book by Thomas Goetz is among the best I've ever read. Hopefully, it will be highly influential, especially considering that we live in an age when most of the "easy" medical problems have been solved and the hard ones remain (eg, cancer and many chronic conditions). Goetz proves to be an incisive analyst, a creative thinker, a balanced pragmatist, and a lucid writer.

The main idea presented in this book is that decision tools need to be developed which enable all available information to be rationally, systematically, and efficiently assembled and weighed in order to cost-effectively maximize individual and collective health outcomes. In other words, health care needs an engineering approach. This is really just common sense, yet our health care system unfortunately falls far short of this ideal, so we need books like this to help open people's eyes.

Here are some further key points from the book:

* Patients need to play an active role in their health care decisions, using physicians and other health care professionals largely as consultants, and collaborating with other patients in sharing information.

* Health care information (medical records, drug labels, etc.) needs to be presented in a sensible standardized format and made easily accessible online on a real-time basis.

* To account for biological heterogeneity among people, preventive measures and treatments need to be tailored to each individual. Thus, the information used to make decisions must include both statistical information drawn from populations as well as specific information particular to each individual (both phenotypic and genetic).

* Costs need to be controlled by emphasizing prevention of disease, lowering the cost for FDA drug approval, avoiding replacement of older/cheap drugs with newer/expensive drugs which aren't significantly better, avoiding use of expensive drugs which don't significantly improve outcomes (eg, many cancer drugs), using/avoiding screening based on relationship to outcomes, avoiding overuse of expensive medical technology, and linking physician payments at least partly to outcomes rather than extent of services.

The above ideas overlap considerably with ideas I arrived at myself after years of intense involvement with health care issues (especially related to cancer research and treatment). For example, see my detailed review of The War on Cancer: An anatomy of failure, A blueprint for the future by Guy Faguet.

This is a brilliant and important book, and I can't recommend it strongly enough.

Thomas Goetz catalogs the recent advances (and setbacks) in medicine & personal health, but also maps out the possibilities for how things could get better. He does this so convincingly that you can't believe it's not already taking root: clear labeling on drugs & food, passive tracking of our exercise routines, open access to our health data.

There are enough lessons for self-improvement in the book that I found myself comparing it to What to Expect When You're Expecting, but since Goetz focuses on the big picture (prevention, diagnosis, disease management) it is more like What to Expect When You're Expecting a Long Life.

Unlike the pregnancy bible I read 10 years ago (and more than once threw across the room), Goetz doesn't preach from a lofty whole-grain pulpit. He doesn't think we should ask people to do more, nor should we scold people for every mistake they have made, but rather we should give them tools to make better health choices.

You know how MDs are always asked for cocktail-party diagnoses? This book is for all the MPHs who stood nearby wishing that someone would ask them for on-the-spot health advice.

I found this book interesting. The first couple of chapters were a bit slow for me because for the few new things I learned, they were repeated several times. As a matter of fact, the author repeats the theme of taking control of your health early throughout the book. I did learn some interesting things, like why so many pharmaceutical companies abandon research that might seem promising they simply don't stand to make enough money. The author says they want to make at least 1 billion dollars per cure, so they abandon the ideas that might only generate a few hundred million. The book has a lot of interesting ideas like that in it, but ultimately it doesn't come to a prescriptive method for taking control of your health. While it is called the Decision Tree and there are several examples of Decision Trees in the book, it doesn't ultimately result in "the" decision tree. However, it does mention several potentially useful websites throughout, such as 23andme, patientslikeme, curetogether, and several others. I only investigated 23andme and the price for genetic sequencing looks to have gone down to $299. Anyways, this is an interesting book and once I got through the first couple of chapters I read through it rather quickly. The author clearly did his research and the effort shows. However, you will not find any magic fomula for managing your health in this book. Instead, you will find lots of suggestions, examples about people who already have issues and their decision trees, and some complaints (I think very legitimate ones) about the way health care is administered today.

Want The Decision Tree: How to make better choices and take control of your health Discount?

This book is an enjoyable foray into making better medical decisions and taking control of one's health care. The author uses several stories of how people with illnesses were able to make better health decisions by obtaining better testing-mostly genetic or linking to social networking sites on health. The authors writing is captivating and has lots of information and insights into the problems of modern medicine. I find the authors theories of decisionmaking undertheorized and though based on tests he could have mentioned what to do next if treatments based on genetic tests dont work. This is of critical importance for as the author acknowledges many treatments dont work. He could have mention adaptive interventions, evolutionary algorithms, or other problem solving methods. Still, a good effort and worth reading.

Diabetes Care for Babies, Toddlers, and Preschoolers: A Reassuring Guide

Diabetes Care for Babies, Toddlers, and Preschoolers: A Reassuring GuideThis is a very reassuring book. I recommend it as a starting point for parents who have been through hard times in the hospital, when they had their child diagnosed with diabetes. We have been through this experience when our 2-years old child was diagnosed with diabetes, we were struggling, not believing, looking for advice everywhere. This book helped us put ourselves together, and start dealing with it in a mature way. It first teachs you how to deal with diabetes emotionally which is the most important step in the treatment, how to explain it to your diabetic kid, his brothers/sisters, how to make injections easier for you and your kid, and many other useful advices. It is written from the nursing point of view, so you must have another comprehensive home reference.

This book is very basic, when my daughter was diagnosed at 18 months, I found I was looking for more detailed information than this book had, the pink panther book was great for clinical knowledge, but there is still no great book on the market with the day to day advise I think a parent of a toddler with diabetes needs, like which sippy cups have ounce markings on them so you can measure 4 oz juice easiest and the value and ease of weighing fruit versus measuring it in cups. These are the things parents need, this book was bland.

A Healer In Every Home: Family Care Guide

A Healer In Every Home: Family Care GuideI love this book! It is short, but it is crammed full of all kinds of useful and interesting information and is a great read. A real gem. In just a few months, it has proven itself invaluable. A friend used the tips to recover from surgery and needed no prescription or over-the-counter pain pills whatsoever. My husband had a fungus under his fingernail for years. He followed the tip on soaking it in the homeopathic remedy, thuja, and it started clearing up right away and has stayed clear for many month since. A friend was still very distressed months after shocking bad news. The "emotional first aid" section led her to ignatia, and when she took it she saw an immediate improvement, even though it was months later. My niece was in a car accident. While technically unhurt, she was traumatized and having difficulty functioning during the week that followed. Two hours after one dose of arnica she was "much much much much better!" She was amazed. You will be, too, when you start treating yourself and your dear ones with these remedies that can be found for about $8 in any health food store (or ordered online right here at Amazon!). I bought extra copies of this book for friends and my MD. Everybody who uses it has found something that will benefit them. Whether you have used homeopathy before, as I have, or are new to the idea, you are bound to find solid practical advice that can be put to use right away. Excellent Resource Section, too.

Woman's Comfort Book: A Self-Nurturing Guide for Restoring Balance in Your Life

Woman's Comfort Book: A Self-Nurturing Guide for Restoring Balance in Your LifeI must have given this book half a dozen times as a gift to friends or family members who were in need of a little nurturing, or who needed an excuse to spend a little more time on themselves. This book has dozens of ideas for activities to help you through a day, and even a little categorized index to look for a project based on how you're feeling at the moment.

A real treasure! Give it to a loved one by itself, or in combination with a nice journal or blank book and a couple of fun pens (I recommend purple), and she will know you care about her. Better yet, buy one for yourself.

This book is a keeper for me and my clients. It's another valuable resource for women. Learning how to better nuture yourself is never a waste of time, and this book is a great tool to help guide you along.

So often women are either cast in the role of care-giver, or place ourselves in that role; often we either feel guilty taking the time to care for ourselves the way we do our families and friends, or somehow perhaps think we don't deserve it.

This simple to use guide helps us first to focus on how we are feeling, getting in touch with what we need. A simple directory of 'situations' gives page numbers for suggested activities.

The activities range from the sublime to the ridiculous, but don't laugh at any of them until you have tried them. Just leafing through the book without even doing any of the suggestions seems to help me destress; just the reminder that I can do things to nourish my body and spirit is a wonderful revitalizer.

I have given away close to a dozen copies of this book to friends who are used to putting themselves and their needs last on the list of priorities. I can not praise it highly enough for women who can not find time, energy, or inclination to give to themselves the care and love that they give those around them.

The Green Beauty Guide: Your Essential Resource to Organic and Natural Skin Care, Hair Care, Makeup,

The Green Beauty Guide: Your Essential Resource to Organic and Natural Skin Care, Hair Care, Makeup, and FragrancesThis book is enlightening -it includes thorough dictionaries of both beneficial and potentially harmful cosmetic ingredients -but the writer seems to be schizophrenic or to have not thoroughly researched the topic, which, as a former journalist, is highly concerning. I was disappointed with her recommendations of products by Avalon Organics, JASON Naturals, Stella McCartney CARE, and Kiss My Face. These brands are hardly superior and were sued by Dr. Bronner's last year for deceptively using the word "organic" and containing petro ingredients. However, the writer later retracted her recommendation of the Kiss My Face brand on her blog.

The retractions continue. She recommends bismuth oxychloride-containing powders by Bare Escentuals in the book (which I was shocked to read since she claims to be a purist) but later says on her blog that bismuth oxychloride can "irritate sensitive skin like mad." Half the people who've used BE and developed red, itchy skin can tell you this. She spends an entire page on avoiding toners with alcohol (duh), then recommends an alcohol-packed toner by Dr. Hauschka.

Speaking of Dr. Hauschka, Ms. Gabriel recommends nearly every Hauschka product made. (By the book's end, one suspects her of having too-close relations with the company.) I respect Dr. Hauschka's biodynamic farming practices, but they use a high amount of alcohol as preservative. Combined with their heavy nut oils (e.g. peanut oil), their pricey products are infamous for breaking people out in milia or causing irritations. There are FAR better organic lines these days.

The book is packed with DIY recipes that require impractical & expensive ingredients, like rose oil, elderflower water, and calendula blossoms. What full-time working woman with a kid has the time or money? And tips like "shampoo your hair with plain egg"? How would that begin to cut oil and grime??

UPDATE: In addition to her questionable expertise, the writer has begun using her blog to bash other organic skincare lines hoping, most likely, of selling her own organic skincare line. There are now retractions on Juice Beauty (certified organic), Jurlique (biodynamic) and L'Uvalla (a lovely new line at Whole Foods). It's bizarre that she would attack these brands while gushing about Bare Escentuals' mediocre and conventionally farmed skincare line. Not to mention, this is the same Bare Escentuals that's being sued in California for making false and misleading statements about its sales. Where are Ms. Gabriel's allegiances and what is her agenda?

As other reviewers have noted, there are contradictions in this book that undermine it's overall credibility. Here's one that's particularly egregious: On page 189, Gabriel describes lecithin as a "green emulsifier"; yet, in Appendix B ("100 Toxic Cosmetic Ingredients You Don't Want in Your Beauty Products") ingredient #55 is--believe it or not--lecithin. This is inexcusable to me.

I found this book to be a bit trendy. Do American women really have the time to mix their own beauty products? No one I know does. Page 57 warns of celebrity endorsements, yet page 75 refers to all the celebrities who use Suki Naturals. She consistently quotes opinions from the makers of natural products, but they are stated like facts. Conventional products do this too, and it is wrong. She loves Dr. Hauschka mascara in the book, but says it runs on her website. Little things like this bugged me. I did learn about ingredients to avoid so all was not lost.

From the founder and owner of the organic skin-care line, Petite Marie, comes a revealing look at cosmetics and skin care that the most of the beauty industry would love to keep secret. For instance, all that a product needs to be labeled as "Organic" is a drop of organic essential oil. This is called greenwashing and most greenwashers spend more money on promoting themselves as environmentally friendly than they do on formulating toxin-free, environmentally sound products.

With The Green Beauty Guide, Julie Gabriel starts with the basics of learning all about your skin and guides you through what you should look for in all your beauty products. She teaches you the how tell the difference between a good marketing campaign and truly organic products. You'll also find The Ten Commandments of Green Beauty, How to Go Green Without Going Broke and even recipes for your own organic beauty products such as cleansers, toners, facial masks, moisturizers and even acne zappers with simple easy to find ingredients.

For me, a not so environmentally conscious consumer, the realization what most of us are doing to our skin and the environment was initially a bit intimidating and scary really but Gabriel's information makes it easy to make the green switch. I've already been through my cabinets checking labels and packaging. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in making a difference.

The author lost me the first time she used the phrase "chemical free". You will never find a product free of chemicals. Chemicals are everywhere. H2O is a chemical. Just because a chemical is produced doesn't make it better or worse than a chemical found in nature. And many chemicals found in nature are very bad for you... "natural" doesn't necessarily mean "desirable".

Surviving Wildfire: Get Prepared, Stay Alive, Rebuild Your Life (A Handbook for Homeowners)

Surviving Wildfire: Get Prepared, Stay Alive, Rebuild Your LifeAs a survivor of the High Park fire one of the largest fires in the history of Colorado and a 30 year veteran on the local VFD, I was anxious to see this book because I have so many friends & neighbors struggling with these issues in the wake of the fire. I was not disappointed. My first copy arrived in the mail last week. Before the evening was out, I had read enough to decide to buy several more copies. One of those copies was for my dad who lives in the WUI west of Denver & is trying to educate his neighbors about being Firewise. The others were for friends who lost their homes in the High Park fire all of them are in the midst of some version of the insurance nightmare. Since Linda lost her home in the Crystal fire a year in advance of the High Park fire she is much further down the learning curve and her book is very helpful to those of us who haven't figured it all out yet. This book covers the spectrum from how to improve your odds of your home surviving a wildfire to how to pick up the pieces if your home is destroyed. Linda does a great job of putting lots of information in a small book that is easy to read. I would recommend that anyone living in or thinking about living in the WUI should read this book (and give a copy to all your neighbors).

Upon the first few pages of reading Linda Masterson's book, Surviving Wildfire, I was struck by strong emotions left over from Colorado's 2012 High Park Fire. The opening pages filled me with a great sense of empathy, and a connection to Linda's story, as well as to others who have lost homes during wildfires. Linda's words also instilled me with recognition of the personal choice to live in the WUI, which comes with both great beauty and peace, as well as a great responsibility of living in a non-urban area.

Linda's writing balances her personal story and resilience with accessible information and tasks for anyone who lives in wildfire-potential places, the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI). Linda's thoughtful, well-researched, and thorough book offers readers the information they need to be prepared before, during, and after a wildfire. This book is very helpful for those who have been affected by wildfire in any way, whether full or partial property loss, a close-call, or living in an area with high fire potential.

This book helps readers to be prepared and ready, which means a great deal during a fire emergency. Linda's book gives readers the knowledge to know what to do, bring, and save during an evacuation. She also walks readers through the difficult process of picking up the pieces after a total or partial loss, how to deal with insurance companies, and understanding the decision-making process of rebuilding or moving on. Linda's book offers preparedness, hope, and resiliency and one reader says a huge thank you!

Buy Surviving Wildfire: Get Prepared, Stay Alive, Rebuild Your Life (A Handbook for Homeowners) Now

Surviving Wildfire is a must-read for people who are considering moving to the WUI and also those who are already living in their dream homes in the woods. This comprehensive book not only covers what you can do to reduce risk of losing your home to wildfire, but also how to recover if disaster strikes.

The book is small but power packed. It gives vital information on how to determine fire risk on a property before you buy; how to reduce risk through building materials, landscaping, and site selection; how and why certain fires become catastrophic; and what to do if you lose your home to wildfire. Ms. Masterson walks you step by step through the insurance maze to ensure you have the best chance of getting what you paid for.

I highly recommend this book to Homeowner Associations, Communities, Developers, and anyone else who lives or works in the WUI.

40 Days to Personal Revolution: A Breakthrough Program to Radically Change Your Body and Awaken the

40 Days to Personal Revolution: A Breakthrough Program to Radically Change Your Body and Awaken the Sacred Within Your SoulIf you found "Journey Into Power" (Baron's first book), to be a life changing book (I also have it on CD and listen to it all the time for inspiration), Baron has produced another excellent guide along the path of his approach to yoga.

While I must admit that I haven't followed the plan on a week by week basis, I have already been doing yoga daily for 8 years and have a very well established practice which I vary daily (I have over 70 videos of every imaginable style of yoga).

A big part of the reason that I purchased this book is because I was curious to see how he broke the sequences down for the various weeks. I like the way he lays out the routines in the series of photographs in the back section of the book, very useful!

The excavation questions in the meditation sections are useful as well as the principles he outlines in the first part of the book. The last section is also very useful in terms of applying yoga to one's whole life and not just what happens on the mat.

I did find Baron's nutritional principles ("The Cleansing Diet" and "The Detoxifying Cleanse") a bit easier to follow in "Journey Into Power", but there was still much interesting "food for thought" in this new book :) Baron's approach to eating is not a "diet" in the way the word is typically used, it's just really an approach to eating vital, living and unprocessed foods along with the psychology behind your relationship to food.

As far as practicing Yoga, in general I feel it's much easier to work with his Video/DVD programs than any book, even those as excellent as Baron's. His video/dvd programs are the best I've seen if you want a real "physical" yet sensible practice. For me the information on the poses in the books are excellent for getting detailed information on the specific elements of the poses which can be hard to get and absorb in the flow of a class (be it live or recorded).

In particular I'd recommend his "Live" programs, such as "Core Power" and "Unlocking Athletic Power" which are shorter practices. Plus "Soul Of Strength" which is a longer program (and it follows the "Journey Into Power" sequence almost exactly, just a few differences.

His PBS special which you can buy called "Transform Your Life" is a documentary of sorts which shows 40 students on one of Baron's weeklong "Bootcamps" and it is very inspirational, it also has a fabulous 20 minute Power Yoga Basics routine which is worth the price of the tape alone, I use it all the time for a short but effective practice.

Also, you may want to check out Baron's "Bootcamp Box" which has two CD's (not DVD's, but the CD's are VERY easy to follow) and flash cards which contain three 20 minute practices (Vinayas Flow/Hip Flow/Core Flow) and a long 75 minute practice. It also has a small booklet that helps you structure a home "Bootcamp" weekend practice.

Since writing this review I have purchased and used his "Journey Into Power" Video/DVD programs and they are excellent. The level one is a wonderful introduction to Baron's approach, it certainly seems that it would be challenging for someone new to vinyasa flow, and even for an experienced person it is a nice shorter and less intense practice than the level 2 which is considerably more intense. The level 2 program follows the sequence of Baron's book "Journey Into Power" quite closely (though it is very close to "Soul Of Strength" so if you have that you may not need "Journey Into Power" Level 2)

Namaste

The concept of having one book that covers spiritual philosphy, detailed yoga sessions, meditation practices and alternative diet theory is a noble goal. It is difficult to execute that goal though, especially in an easy-to-read format like Baptiste tries. This book may be useful for those already with some experience in yoga, and spiritual quests, but may be disjointed for beginers.

The first part of the book lays out 12 good spiritual "laws" and is a great mixture of Eastern and Western spiritual guidelines, quoting Jesus, Buddha, Ghandi, and others. This is worthwhile reading, and may touch on a foundation for spirituality that will resonate with many Weterners. Very Intriguing, I wish there was more here.

The Yoga Vinyasas are much more difficult to follow, with over 30 pages of writing and photos showing the first 20 minute session alone. Yoga appears to be Baptiste's primary fame to date, and where most of the pages of the book focus. Video may be a better format to get Yoga across. I run one of Rodney Yee's videos (albeit with a different sequence of Vinyasas) and use Baptiste's photos and description to give me details if I don't know a pose.

The diet sections are confusing, I saw Baptiste in a lecture and I'm not sure he even understands what is written here ( was there a ghost writer helping?) Still, their focus on balance in a diet, and balance from many viewpoints (including building vs cleansing, cooling vs heating foods)is good.

The meditation emphases and "Excavation questions" are good also.

Can one have a personal revolution in 40 days with this book? The book is too new to know so stay tuned. From what I see, there needs to be significant supplements as far as reading and instruction for this to be the main catalyst for such a revolution.

Buy 40 Days to Personal Revolution: A Breakthrough Program to Radically Change Your Body and Awaken the Now

I have to admit I have an ambiguous relationship to this book. I admire the author's credentials and experience and the contents are organized around a 40 day plan which is a great idea. However, I think there are some important gaps if this is your only reference.

First, the best part about this book is progressing and deepening your commitment a day at a time. This is a great way to change your life and the ideas presented are useful and cover physical, mental and spiritual practices. The book is also well-illustrated and provides basic instruction on the most important asanas.

What I feel is missing here is more depth on the appropriate and safe ways to practice the asanas. If one is attending regular yoga classes or has a teacher, then I think the instructions are adequate. However, I think it's particulary important for beginners to focus on the details and if you purchase this book I would get something to supplement it such as Judith Lasater's "The 30 Essential Yoga Poses" and/or "Dancing the Body of Light" by Dona Holleman. If you have a bad back or neck, then it might also be worth purchasing "Back Care Basics" by Mary Pullig Schatz. (The Pilates back book might also be helpful, but it is not as comprehensive and it's not a yoga book per se.)

Some other aspects of this book that I like is the broad scope that covers philosophy, diet, meditation and routines that build up over time. It also talks about dealing with resistance and has a very motivational tone. While this approach may be a bit aggressive for non-athletes or people who are casually acquainted with yoga, the challenge will appeal to more serious students and atheletes who want to move forward quickly and are already in relatively good shape. These people are also less likely to get injured along the way.

In truth, I would rate the book a 3.5. However, there is no 3.5 category. While there are many things I like here, I don't see it as a standalone book. The most interesting thing about it for me was the attempt to integrate lots of elements into a way of life. However, I think there wasn't enough space to completely tackle this task. The effort to do this is admirable and there is certainly a lot one can learn, but please pick up one or more of the other books above before you starting combining bending and twisting or other physical moves that put high strain on fragile joints as well as the back.

This book is very well written and I've not been able to put it down since I got it. I'm in the middle of my fourth week of the 40 day program and things have been unbelievably smooth. The practices have awesome flow from one to the next. The progressions are so natural. When I saw "40 days to transformation," I conjured up some grueling process, something I'd force myself to get through and then move on. But around the end of the first week I realized these 40 days are transforming my life. The physical changes have been powerful, I've dropped weight, stress and a lot of tension. The lessons I've learned about myself are permanent. They'll be with me always!

I've been practicing yoga for a while, and have been integrating Baron Baptiste's "power" style into my own recently. I thought I'd pick up this book and see what he has to say. I bought it more for the meditation and life coaching side of things, and I think Baron's approach to "presence" meditation is great--it actually works for me, unlike other methods I've tried. I think I can also relate best to Baron the most of the yoga gurus because of the physicality of his yoga: the "power" and the "flow." As an avid runner, I feel more comfortable being active rather than holding poses for a long time, and focusing on the breath while moving through poses helps me achieve mental stillness which I can carry into meditation practice (which I'm totally a beginner at!). The other thing I really like is that Baron references Jesus, Moses, and the Bible as much as he does Indian yogis and gurus--and as a Christian too, it makes me really happy to see someone else finding a way to integrate Christianity into yoga. You don't have to be Hindu or Indian to be a yogi, or give up your spiritual beliefs.

Caregiving Tips A-Z: Alzheimer's & Other Dementias

Caregiving Tips A-Z: Alzheimer's & Other DementiasStarr has outdone herself with this book! All of the tips are "real life" answers to everyday problems in dealing with the elderly, and people of all ages. Her tips and sugestions don't require additional money or effort, they incorporate everyday scenarios with everyday ideas. Loved it!

This book is indeed "a practical guide" for getting through each day-in a way that only caregivers can understand. The information in it has made my days better than they would have been otherwise. The chapters on communication and behavioral changes have helped in developing caregiver skills; and there are other helpful chapters on improving the home set-up and managing problems with family members. I was especially impressed with the detailed information put into this book on everything from adult role changes to getting the keys back from your parent. It worked for me!

I lost my grandfather recently to Alzheimer's disease and am currently repeating the same terrible ordeal with my grandmother. It is a long, long, painful journey and many questions and concerns have burdened my family while dealing with this affliction. Ms. Calo-oy's book provides an exhaustive reference for the myriads of scenarios and situations a caregiver will encounter. This book is written from a sensitive and respectful point of view that not only addresses the loved one's many needs, but the often unknown and misunderstood needs of the caregiver as well. I found this book very encouraging and uplifting. I recommend this book to any individual or institution that is involved with caregiving!

This is a tough subject, and the book is for more advanced dementia and Alzheimer's than the person has that I care for. Still, there are some good tips and the book is recommended for caregivers of people with advanced dementia or Alzheimer's. It takes a lot of understanding and this book deals with the nitty gritty and could make dealing with a really unpleasant job a little easier.
