Your Aching Back: A Doctor's Guide to Relief

Your Aching Back: A Doctor's Guide to Reliefthis book was very helpful to my husband ,who has stenosis of the lower back. Gave him info that hadn't been given to him before. helped him understand pain management better. I also found a section on the type of arthritis I have that was very informative. Glad I bought this book.

I ordered the book after finding an earlier edition (1993) in my resident library.

i was most interested in surgical topics. This book addressed artificial disc replacement in more depth. On the downside, the earlier edition had a few paragraphs on rhizotomy (severing a nerve); rhizotomies continue to be performed

and a surgeon I visited recommended the procedure for me. The current edition had only one reference in the glossary. Also, the diagrams could be larger and more detailed. Overall though, I think it is worthwhile book for anyone with back problems.

Next to Nothing: A Firsthand Account of One Teenager's Experience with an Eating Disorder (Annenberg

Next to Nothing: A Firsthand Account of One Teenager's Experience with an Eating DisorderIf you are looking for a book that tells a little bit about what an eating disorder is like, giving a pretty accurate depiction in very few pages, and then focuses for the duration on treatment, this is the book for you. Carrie describes her experience with an eating disorder in about 25 pages, and then spends the next 120 pages talking about treatment, the options available, explaining the medical diagnostic side, tips during treatment, etc. If you are someone with an eating disorder that has decided to recover, someone that knows someone with an eating disorder and want to help them recover, or just want to find out about the treatment process, this book is perfect. However, if you want a book that truly describes "a firsthand account of one teenager's experience with an eating disorder" go read Wasted by Marya Hornbacher.

While this book was well written, and didn't have anything technically wrong with it (although I must say I quit reading shortly after she started talking about treatment, so I can't give a fully accurate review), the title is misleading. It isn't a book about her experience with an ED. It is all about treatment. I didn't want a book on treatment. I wanted a book on what it was like to have an eating disorder.

Know what you want to get out of the book, and then you will know if this is the book for you or not.

This book offers wonderful support and information to those suffering from an eating disorder as well as to the family and friends trying to help their loved one. The style is very engaging and easy to read, with lots of practical advice. The author draws upon her own experiences along the way. But, at the same time it includes the latest in scientific research and findings, in language that is very understandable. "Next to Nothing" has it all, and is a must read for those looking to understand the complicated world of eating disorders.

If you've struggled, or know someone who struggles with an eating disorder, this a book that can help you realize that you're not alone and that there IS help. I should know, I've struggled with them since I was a teenager, but have overcome them.

It can happen :-)

Heal Your Life with Home Remedies and Herbs

Heal Your Life with Home Remedies and HerbsI would recommend any book written by Hanna Kroeger, but this one is absolutely essential to anyone interested in natural healing. In the introductory chapters, the author gives a description of the physical organs and subtle bodies and how to use the natural magnetic and electric powers of our bodies to heal ourselves and others. This sort of healing might be compared to what is most commonly known as "Reiki." The bulk of the book is a reference of diseases and disorders with herbs, vitamins and minerals that heal the specific conditions. This book is invaluable. I refer to it a few times a week. If you only own one book of home remedies, let it be this one.

It is never advertised on this book that so much of it deals with a unique spiritual outlook, such as with chakras, mind and body connections, and such. Because reading the back of the book, the front of it, or even in the title never lets the reader know this, I have to drop a point just for that alone. Usually it's clear if I'm buying a book just on herbalism, or on TCM, Ayurveda, etc....it should have been said here as well. Furthermore they didnt jump into the book right. It starts right off with the chakras as if the reader has already been given a few chapters before and just never read them.

Text is easy to understand and, while not written badly, it's clear Kroeger was more of a healer than a writer. Chapters are broken up rather abruptly and without warning -the same as their introductions.

Besides the unusual healing outlook, I did enjoy several things about this book. For one, the healing hands chapter speaks of some interesting things. While not all of them make sense to me, they are unique and worth reading about it. Curious on the nervous breakdowns and fallen arches, for example. Emotions is a chapter I did have issues with, as I never saw jealousy causing lung troubles, etc, my mind doesn't wrap around this. I'm not putting down anyone's beliefs that DO, but really no warning on this before buying the book?? The inner organ chapter was a saver, but overall just not my cup of tea.

Chapter fifteen is the "home remedies" This is all put in a simple table that lasts for pages and pages of the book. Simple: Health issue, then vitamin minerals box, then finally Spices/Herbs/Kitchen Aids reading straight across. It's all jotted this way without words for sentences. This is the herbal remedies and recommendations. How .... enlightening. There is obviously not enough to room to really list WHY the remedies are there, what she's seen happen with them, etc, etc, just a jot down of what to do.

This 'Table' lasts from 113 to 291.

Really I do admire Hanna Kroeger, she was an amazing woman and healer. This book, though, is not something I'd recommend to anybody. It does have a large amount of information, but on what exactly I don't really know at all times. Some of the info is scanty at best, and the quick jotted home remedies in a table with only 3 sections across sadly isn't what I expected.

If you are a fan of Kroeger, read this book, but otherwise pick something else up.

The Edgar Cayce Remedies

The Edgar Cayce RemediesThis is a good book. I like that it not only describes Edgar Cayce's trance suggestions and philosophy of healing but that it is written by Dr. William McGarey who used to be one of the founding doctors of the medical clinic in Phoenix, Arizona that used the Cayce readings when appropriate to cure many illnesses, even those considered incurable.

However, because of the title of the book, I expected it to be a listing of various Cayce remedies such as herbs, lotions, foods. Instead, it lists remedies to undertake for various types of ailments. It's written in three parts. The first describes the functioning of the human body. The second sections lists various types of healing regimens suggested in the Cayce readings such as castor oil packs, prayer and meditation, and consulting dreams plus more conventional types of healing regimens such as diet and nutrition, exercise, manipulation, and massage. The third section is the best because it lists various body systems such as the digestive organs, the skin, and the heart and vascular system, and describes how to get that system healthy and keep it healthy.

I find it very helpful to get a sense of how the body works from Cayce's very holistic perspective. However, I would have preferred that when Cayce readings are mentioned, that they be quoted and the numbers of the readings listed as they are in The Edgar Cayce Handbook for Health Through Drugless Therapy.

If you are interested in listings of various healing regimens, there's Edgar Cayce Encyclopedia of Healing (Edgar Cayce) that lists various ailments and their cures and An Edgar Cayce Encyclopedia of Foods for Health and Healing, which lists foods and food combinations suggested to heal various physical incoordinations, plus Edgar Cayce on Healing Foods for Body, Mind, and Soul, another books on the foods and food combinations recommended in the Cayce readings.

A good book but I'd choose The Edgar Cayce Handbook for Health Through Drugless Therapy first because it is a "how to" of the Cayce remedies and it quotes the readings directly including their reading numbers.

By Carol Chapman, award-winning photographer of the ONLY Edgar Cayce calendar Divine in Nature: With Quotes from Edgar Cayce and author of When We Were Gods: Insights on Atlantis, Past Lives, Angelic Beings of Light and Spiritual Awakening.

Edgar Cayce was, and still is, a force of nature. Not being old enough to remember the man myself, I have found a lot of the information in the book was in common usage in the days of my grandparents. Perhaps his influence at that time was more widespread than I ever knew and now, with the modern medical machinery in place, his knowledge is resurfacing out of need. I found the book fascinating, educational, common-sensical, and opportunistic in it's availability to me when I needed to investigate other avenues of medicine. I would recommend this book to anyone, especially those who believe that a little TLC, some positive affirmations, and a more nature-driven potency can, and will, cure or alleviate ailments on more than one level.

This book is a wealth of information for either the everyday person or avid seeker of holistic remedies. There is a remedy for almost everything in here and they all work!

Heated castor oil packs (worked for coughing up vocal polyps and getting rid of cysts) and apple cider vinegar (cured my laryngitis fast!) are among some of the simpler ones that work miracles.

I became so engrossed with wanting to know all I could from Edgar Cayce that I have read most of his books and have even made a trip to Hopkinsville,KY , where he lived. I tell everyone who will listen about his castor oil packs. I use them on myself and my family with 100% success. I have healed myself of uterine tumors by following the advise on page 228.I receive instant relief from pain when I apply castor oil to ruff cuticles or hang nails. My son plays basketball and has had pulled muscles in his ankle and knee. I immediately apply a caster oil pack for a few hours and then he is fine.! I suggest that every household should have this book. Read it and apply what you read for a happier, healthier life.

Herbal Home Health Care

Herbal Home Health CareThis is a wonderful book for parents who would like to use herbal remedies, but don't know where to start. Dr. Christopher's book is simple and interesting to read. He offers information on cause of disease and how to avoid it, wonderful information on nutrition, an alphabetical list of common childhood aliments with herbal remedies, and a section on how to's i.e. how to make an herbal tea, a fomentation, and a poltice and more. I love this book, I find myself turning to it time and time again!

I really like this book. I wish though that the ingredients had the amounts of each written with it. It is difficult to find how much of each ingredient you use in the formulation. I do have a great deal of respect for the Doctor.

This is a very good, informative book. The only problem I had was that it often didn't have the ratios of the herbal combinations so I couldn't make them myself without just guessing at the amounts.

I have used this book for myself and my family. It is a very helpful resource. I first borrowed it from a friend and then had to buy my own. It does not give the clearest instructions sometimes, but if you have any herbal experience, you can figure it out. I appreciate having a book that advises based on actual experience. This is not a regurgitation of some obscure, vague herbal info.

Good reading. It has a lot of treatments for different problems. I love his formulas, especially the tinctures and liquid extracts. However they are very expensive. It doesn't seem so since most bottles cost about $10 to $12 for about 50 capsules, but for just about every item you have to take 2 capsules three times a day. If you paid $12 for a bottle of 50 and took 6 a day the bottle would only last you about 8-1/2 days, so I only buy the formulas I feel I need the most. The book is great though and you can buy your own herbs online. I would definitely recommend the book.

Makeup Makeovers in 5, 10, 15, and 20 Minutes: Expert Secrets for Stunning Transformations

Makeup Makeovers in 5, 10, 15, and 20 Minutes: Expert Secrets for Stunning TransformationsI enjoy Robert Jone's books very much, this is the third of his collection that I have purchased. His looks are very wearable and modern, the instructions are clear and he uses a nice range of skin tones, face shapes, etc., to display his creations. Ethnic groups are well represented here, the models are fairly young, appearing to be in their 20's 30's ("young" being relative, of course). I also admire the fact that, outside of the brushes that he uses (which he also sells) his tools and makeup colors are easy to come by, and he creates a great deal of glamor with just a handful of basic, timeless colors.

Nothing here is edgy (Rae Morris) or an obvious homage to vintage style (Kevyn Aucoin), and there is an odd sort of sameness to the looks since each of the photographs, although beautifully photographed for detail, are staged in almost the identical manner. I have found that of these makeup styles, the ones that flatter me most are where the model has the same eye size and shape, since that is where Robert's focus is; the blush, lipstick application stray very little from look to look, varying only in color/texture/intensity.

My only issue is the 5, 10, 15, 20 minute timeline, which does not include the application of concealer, foundation, powder, or contouring. All of these looks start the clock running with the assumption that you have already prepared your face, which may not be an issue for someone with flawless, youthful skin at which point steps can be achievable in the time indicated with a bit of practice. To his credit, Robert does an excellent job of going through the preparation process at the beginning of his book (probably his best guide ever), but, for me at least, the prep work takes a good 5 10 minutes on it's own. Such are the joys of advancing age and the ravages of time.

On the other hand, I have yet to come across any makeup routine that works for me in under 15 minutes, so this may just be an completely unobtainable goal on my part. If anyone out there can write that book, I promise to pay good money for it.

Final word: if you enjoy makeup and toying around with different looks you will find this a good addition to you beauty book library, extended timeline and all.

Loved this book! Very stylish and modern looks, all of them absolutely suitable for everyday wear some are for parties etc, though, but very elegant. This book could have a title "Elegant and polished everyday looks"! Detailed instructions for every look, with many pictures. A beginner can use it with great success, and a pro will find some nice ideas, too. Highly recommend this book to anyone. For a beginner: this one and R.Jones' "Makeup makeovers:Expert secrets..." (or his "Looking younger: Makeovers...") will make a great make up school for you.

I am a huge fan of Robert and I think he is the best MUA out there. Youalways look natural not overly made up and all of his looks in this book are very wearable. I am also a member in his Beauty Academy which is fabulous!!

I have 2 of his other books and couldn't imagine another one that would be better than the other 2. I don't think this one is so much better as different. My only issue with this book is I wish he would of put what brands he is using. Some of the shimmer contours are different than I have seen and would like to know what company makes these.I know other makeup artist who write books (Carmindy) always puts in her book the name of the makeup product and the company other than that this book is fun, helpful and the pictures are just beautiful. But next time I would like to see more mature women, these women are all very young.

i got this on my kindle. althought I'm not finished w/ this book , so far I'm satisfied. it shows you different type of looks and in some ways, some of the steps and brushes they tell you to use is very repetitive which is nice. Only disappointment is that I was really trying to find a tutorial on how to do eyes and contouring. this book pretty much just tells you to put color on the crease from the outside corner in, or put color/contour the outer 3rd of the eye, etc. but doesn't tell you how to do it.

Coming Home to Your Body: 365 Simple Ways to Nourish Yourself Inside and Out

Coming Home to Your Body: 365 Simple Ways to Nourish Yourself Inside and OutThis book is a wonderful way to get in the habit of self-care. So much of our daily experience is imprinted on our physical beings-our bodies-yet, our culture is so cerebral that we have learned to "tune out" these vital messages. Understanding what your body is saying to you, stopping and listening, and reflecting back to your body "I understand you" are the foundations for mind-body wholeness.

This book has practical exercises for increasing your understanding of your body's messages. Some of them are not very realistic, because they require a chunk of time that is hard for many of us to create. Others are so simple and so effective that it makes no sense NOT to give them a try.

This is a beautifully, compassionately written little book on learning to honor your body, respect your needs, and take care of yourself. Berry teaches self-nurturance in one of the best ways that it can be fully experienced: on a moment-to-moment, daily basis. She encourages readers to take good care of their bodies through regular physicals, nutrition, exercise, massage, hot baths, and more. Included are delightfully sensual and joyous ideas for self-nurturance, and many little quizzes to see where you are in the process of self-nurturance. Extremely valuable for those who have become disconnected from their bodies, as well as for women who have experienced childhood trauma. A wonderful gift for a close friend or a sister. Most of all--for yourself! Highly recommended.

Men's Health Ultimate Dumbbell Guide: More Than 21,000 Moves Designed to Build Muscle, Increase Stre

Men's Health Ultimate Dumbbell Guide: More Than 21,000 Moves Designed to Build Muscle, Increase Strength, and Burn FatJust about everything you ever wanted to know about dumbbells. The book is divided up into three parts. The first part, the truth about dumbbells, explains all about the different types of dumbbells. The second part, the master moves, shows you the exercises you can do with a dumbbell which includes many pictures and instructions. This part makes up about 80% of the book. And finally, part three, a million moves for your muscles, essentially provides the reader with tips and suggested routines.

A great resource if you're into dumbbells, readers who lift regularly might also be interested in Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff to prevent rotator cuff tears a lot of lifters eventually get.

I like this book. It would have been perfect except for the fact that "Dumbbell Training for Strength And Fitness" by Matt Brzycki is better. This book is broken down into three parts: The Truth About Dumbbells, The Master Moves, and A Million Moves for Your Muscles. Essentially, this is a good book for someone who wants to master basic movements and then advance by combining exercises for dual body parts. With this in mind, it is an excellent resource for someone with dumbbells and a few props: adjustable bench, swiss ball, and a step.

The first section gives an excellent introduction to dumbbells & pros and cons of different types of equipment. I personally use the Powerblock dumbbells. The second section has pictures of each basic, intermediate, and combined set of exercises. Part three is small, but has example exercises and helps you to customize a workout.

There was one odd thing about the book. There is a picture of a kettle bell on one of the introductory pages, but there isn't a mention of them or their use anywhere in the book. This was an unexpected surprise and then letdown. In all it is a great book. It only gets four stars because it *does not* give the ideology behind different workout techniques: high intensity training, pre/post exhaust techniques, progressive workload, 21s, 3X3 workouts, supersets, forced negatives, etc.

My advice is to buy this book or Brzycki's and also get Arnold's The New Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding.

The book has some good features but they don't outweigh the negatives. The exercises have great descriptions of how to do them but they lack the the list of what not to do. The exercises are grouped alphabetically which I thought was a good idea until I tried to do them. Since exercises are usually done in a specific order having them alphabetical it takes more time to find the ones you want to do first. Also, not every exercise book gives each exercise the same name. The book also lacks in listing good routines to get you started.

Read Best Reviews of Men's Health Ultimate Dumbbell Guide: More Than 21,000 Moves Designed to Build Muscle, Increase Stre Here

The book's basic design is that it shows you the core dumbbell exercises (about 40) like bench press, lunges, shoulder press, etc. Then in each section it details how by doing things like changing your grip, foot position, using a bench, etc. you can perform variations of the core exercises. That's how it comes up with the 21,000 moves.

It's a good value if you are new to using dumbbells or if dumbbells are the only type of resistance training that you are planning to do. I like the section entitled "Combine & Conquer" where it shows you how you can combine moves into one exercise in order to expedite your workout. Note, all the pictures in this book are in black & white.

However I think another book, The Men's Health Big Book of Exercises: Four Weeks to a Leaner, Stronger, More Muscular YOU! by Adam Campbell (or the Women's Health Big Book of Exercises), is a better value. This book has pretty much the same dumbbell exercises but also has body-weight exercises, cable exercises and free weight exercises. It has good sections about nutrition and and sample workouts. The pictures are in color. This book is appropriate for beginners to advanced; and home-only exercisers to gym rats.

Lastly, almost all the exercises in these books can found on the internet, for example at websites like or . However, I like to have a book of exercises to refer to when I'm looking to change up my workouts.
