The Ultimate Fitness Boxing & Kickboxing Workout

The Ultimate Fitness Boxing & Kickboxing WorkoutDon't try to defend yourself using this book. You will get creamed. This book is strictly for fitness kickboxing which is okay. Don't use this book to create your own style unless it is a fitness kickboxing style. I don't think that many of these exercises translate well to a competition class. These exercises are best left in the aerobics room for the most part.

I am a kickboxing instructor, teaching a class on heavy bags and working on developing a style of my own. I have found O'Donnell's book to be an invaluable source of information to me. His clear, concise descriptions of stances and punching and kicking techniques cover all the basics. I'm always looking for creative kickboxing combinations, and he has a number of them in the book. In addition, his section in the back on Resistance Training Exercises has helped me tremendously in creating new ways to challenge the people I'm instructing. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in teaching a challenging kickboxing class either cardio or contact style.

This text is best suited for people that don't intend to exercise but want to look like they're interested in fitness and reason that by spending money on this book, they've done a great service to their overall health. After eagerly ripping open the packing (that once open negates a return) I feel like I just took a class from the "Rex Kwon Do" Cage Fighting School on Napoleon Dynamite. I was looking for instructional descriptions of the techniques I use in my classes to improve form and prevent injuries. The "boxing/kickboxing" part of the book doesn't start until page 51 and ends on page 84. Unfortunately it drones on for another 61 pages of nothing leaving us the consumers with 23% of what we paid for. Save your money, watch some Billy Blanks DVDs and have fun out there.

The Consumer Reports Guide to Childproofing & Safety: Tips to Protect your Baby and Child from Injur

The Consumer Reports Guide to Childproofing & Safety: Tips to Protect your Baby and Child from Injury at Home and on the GoEvery parent should read this comprehensive, easy-to-read and understand guide to child safety at home, outdoors, and in the car. There is an enormous amount of information so I suggest parents, especially new parents, do a quick read to learn about hazards in familiar surroundings and what parents can do to prevent injury. Then when you are ready to buy a bicycle and helmet carefully re-read that section in the chapter, "On the Go" which also covers strollers, skates, and how to be a safe pedestrian. This book is so comprehensive I could only come up with one omission: under food safety I would have added food spoilage and hazards like bacterial contamination of purchased food urging parents to keep abreast of food recalls and warnings. Might a new parent feel overwhelmed thinking about all the possible dangers in their child's world? Maybe, but better safe than sorry. Plus the book will help a parent develop a "safety reflex" so you automatically turn in the pot handle even though there are no toddlers around. Plus you will be modeling that safety reflex for your kids which will help keep your future grandchildren safe.

Great book for first time parents in understanding what to childproof, but I wish there were more how to install instructions. I also wish that they'd give more information on people to "hire" to help you. It just didn't give enough information. It's a good start though.

This isn't what you expect from consumer reports. All this book does is tell you what you need for baby-proofing your home. You can find this information anywhere on the internet. Their other books and their monthly magazine review different products and let you know which ones were better so you know what brand to buy. After reading this you still have to research what the better brands are.

Do you have a subscription to Consumer Reports online? Then you can skip this book and just surf for the latest reviews. Otherwise, this is a fine little book to prepare you on what to look for, what questions to ask. It's actually a little thin on specific recommendations -not every product has a review per se -and be forewarned: there are no recommendations on car seats, as they are re-evaluating their safety criteria on car seats/crash worthiness. You may be just as well off getting the recommended list from your registry at Babies-R-Us or Target or wherever, and looking at the online customer reviews of the products.

This book is written by one of the most trusted names in the Pro-Consumer field: Consumer Reports. CR will test everything and give you an honest review, that is why I decided to purchase this book, since I'm a new father and wanted to provide the safest environment to my baby. This book gives you very good tips to protect your child anywhere and everywhere. Some of the details may apply to your home, some might not, but in summary, you will find everything you need to keep your little one away from known dangers, and that is priceless. For the price, this book is a steal. I recommend it!

Herbal Healing for Women

Herbal Healing for WomenRosemary Gladstar's "Herbal Healing for Women" is at the top of my list of 'must reads'. I've taken her herbal homestudy course and read most of her books. As an herbalist student I have shelves of herb-related books and this is one of my favorites.

Gladstar is one of the most respected herbalists today. Her books are easy to read and understand and full of helpful recipes. One problem with many herbal books is that they only mention what certain herbs are good for. Gladstar also explains how to use them and simply enough for anyone to understand.

When my very pregnant daughter mentioned that her stretched skin felt sunburned I went searching for help. I checked through all my 'woman' herbals but only this book had a suggestion. I found the recipe for "Pregnant Belly Oil" which was easy to follow. The ingredients were easily found here at home and in town. The best part of it all was it works beautifully and smells great!

This is a wonderful book to use to expand your study of herbalism. I have to admit that the review concerning peppermint encouraged me to write my own. If that review has made you re-think this book, you might want to consider that I checked through my library and found almost all my books listed peppermint to ease heartburn. Only one "Green Pharmacy" mentioned the possiblity that peppermint caused heartburn BUT note the BUT it went on to say that they disagreed and suggested it was still a good herb for the problem.

Buy this book and use it! You won't be disappointed.

Rosemary Gladstar has a winner with HERBAL HEALING FOR WOMEN. She begins with a simple premise--women have needs different from men. Women, cannot escape the calendar, the seasons, and nature in general. Men don't experience menses, bear children, or go through menopause. Herbs that ease the pain women know first hand can only be seen as Goddess-sends if you will.

Because men and women are different, not all the herbs that work for men will work for women--and vice versa. Unfortunately, not too many "herbalists" clearly acknowledge this in their various books. In many herbal books and manuals you have to dig to find the information specific for age and sex, but Gladstar has arranged the female part in logical categories associated with the various phases of a woman's life.

For example, Black Cohash (Cimicifuga Racemosa), Linseed oil, and Isoflavins contain phytoestrogens and are used in Europe to alleviate the symtoms of menopause. Since the side effects of some of the regularly prescribed synthetic estrogens derived from mare's urine are not only acquired in despicable ways (ask PETA) but are dangerous to your health (don't belive me? read the little piece of paper that comes with your prescription) you might consider alternatives. I have and am here to say that some of the unhappy consequences I experienced from the over-the-counter drug are a thing of the past.

As part of my Master's Degree program (I am a sociologist-demographer), I studied mortality, morbidity, and biostatistics at Georgetown University and learned how to read biomedical research. I have maintained a personal interest in, and spent the last 30 years keeping up with, medical studies about women's issues. So, I am not ignorant of the strengths and shortcomings of various drugs used to deal with women's "complaints." The bad news is this--all synthetic drugs have bad side effects. Sometimes they are worse than what ails you. Synthetics simply aren't as good as the original, and as Gladstar points out, you even have to be careful where the original is involved.

For example, the current evidence for HRT with estrogens made from mare's urine is conflicted. Unfortunately, for ages and ages, males were the only medical subjects in scientific studies. So, it will take awhile to find out just how effective and/or damaging therapies like HRT are. In the interim, my daughter's midwife recommended herbs known to women through the ages and I am taking these to deal with the symptoms of menopause.

Ms. Gladstar discusses the clinical reseach associated with each of the herbs listed in her book, including those of interest to me at this phase in my life. Thank goodness, she doesn't limit herself to research conducted in the U.S. And, unlike the European herbalists, she includes herbs known and used by American Indian women.

I have a number of favorites, many I've known about since I was a child. I will never forget discovering the cure for warts from a little classmate in 4th grade. I rushed home to tell my mother because my sister suffered from warts (all over her hands). Mom had tried everything, but this procedure worked. I tried it years later on a horse that broke out with warts all over his body--they are caused by a virus--and he survived the virus and lost all his warts. My little friend was only nine years old, and had an amazing knowledge of home remedies. Of course we know these are just old wives tales.

This book is a pleasure to read and a gem for every woman concerned for her health. As an acupressure practitioner I find Rosemary Gladstar's advice invaluable, and her recipes and herbal suggestions complement nicely my books on Chinese herbs. The teas, tinctures and salves are easy to make, and the explanations are clear and knowledgeable. The Materia Medica at the end of the book is extremely useful. I particularly enjoyed Ms. Goldstar's suggestions for younger women's skin problems, have made without any problems and with common kitchen appliances the range of facial prducts described in the book, and am enjoying them immensely. Not only are they better than any commercial brand of skin care (because they only contain the best and purest products) but one has the satisfaction of taking an active role in caring for her own health and beauty. Even if you already own several herbal books, do not miss this one. It will become your favorite!

I bought this book a few months ago becuase I've been showing symptoms of endometriosis and also have fibroids. I used her herbal formulas and castor oil packs as recommended and my symptoms have improved dramatically. I would recommend this to any woman who's having "female trouble". We really can take our health care into our own hands, contrary to what doctors would have us think....

Real Fitness for Real Women: A Unique Workout Program for the Plus-Size Woman

Real Fitness for Real Women: A Unique Workout Program for the Plus-Size WomanFirst I have to say, Thank you Rochelle Rice! I heard about the book from a friend andI immediately went to buy it. I use to work out at a gym, but I felt like everyone was looking at me as the cautionary tale so I haven't really worked out for almost 2 years. Now that I am armed with exercises just for me, I actually started to work out again with my head held high.

What I liked about the book, is that it focuses on six weeks -which is easy enough to make a commitment to. And she starts you off slowly, building new things into it each week.

The pictures -using REAL women -are easy to understand and the stretches feel great.

I also learned a lot about how fatter bodies need specific exercises and she really explains them. I have been doing the program for about 3 weeks now and so far so good!

I recommend this to other plus size gals like myself who are fed up with the fitness is only for skinny people.

I was so excited to find this exercise book, especially after reading the back cover. The author has a master's degree in plus-size exercise! The book opens with an M.D.'s intro asking the reader what is so different about this program. But she then lists the medical and psychological benefits of any fitness or exercise plan. The doctor continues calling this program "groundbreaking," "innovative" and research-designed. Next comes the prologue, an over-the-top testamonial for "the amazing, revolutionary program." For me, here is where the book falters. Right from the start. It smacks of a late-night info-mercial--too eager to sell.

I looked for the research as promised and found it scant. In Chapter 5, the research citations were 15 years old. As a large-woman, I read words and terms I've seen used all too often--in dieting sales pitches. There is nothing groundbreaking or amazing here. The groundbreakers were Pat Lyons who began the first fitness program for large women and others before her, as mentioned in the author's acknowledgments. Today, though still growing and far too few, exercise for women of size is taking place in many cities throughout the USA and Canada.

Follow-up studies for the specific functional assessments that are mentioned would be helpful. As large-sized consumers, we've been told to disregard anecdotes and testamonials for diet pitches and to demand solid research, if any. We should expect no less when being "sold" fitness.

On more positive notes, the use of affirmations and supports are a plus in the chapters on Getting Motivated and Creating Support. The author provides some skillfull means of tapping into the personal power of daily affirmations. In the Getting Started chapter, the brief discussions of foot and skin care, along with large-size clothing options are also welcome additions.

As for the exercises, the p. 46 aerobic mix is plainly difficult to read through, and I suspect few will actually be able to execute the movements, let alone at an aerobic pace. Some of the featured exercises are more clear and simplistic than others. Though listed as (optional,) the mats may be an essential item for the comfort of many plus-sized women.

The final chapter is Food for Thought, containing plenty of information, but taking on a different tone. There are good suggestions here, but not any lofty promise-everything claims as earlier in the book (for example, see p.7, "I can. My program.... Be assured that my program is different from the rest.") The chapter definitely does not sell any diet. The author mentions having consulted with a plus-sized dietician, and the emphasis here is on satisfying the body's food cues.

The book ends with Stories of Inspiration including "Kathleen's" profile providing her story of weight loss contrary to the book's de-emphasis on weight loss throughout.

Despite its hard sales pitch, this book does not offer a "groundbreaking, revolutionary, amazing" program. Even if you couple your best intentions with that of the author and her featured anecdotal players, you may very well take this one home --and shelve it.

These exercises and stretches are so gentle, and yet they have such an amazing effect. I have more energy, greater range of motion, and more bounce than before. I'm much more eager for my regular walks than I used to be. I'd love it if Rochelle shared more information on how the body mechanics of large women are unique, but it's clear from the effects of the exercises that she's done her homework and that her plan works. I have a long history of problems with my neck and shoulders, and the upper-body stretches are especially helpful at getting my muscles to settle down and loosen up. I've been struggling with my exercise program on my own for a long time, and although the exercises in Rochelle's book seem very simple, they have had a profound effect on my sense of physical well-being. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this program to any large woman. The proof is in the execution. You won't know what a great program this is until you've worked at it for a couple of weeks and felt the result. And you won't have to hurt yourself to do it. The exercises are gentle, easy to do, and adjustable depending on your needs and limitations.

When I first saw Ms. Rice on CBS This Morning I was struck by her enthusiasm for plus sized fitness. I was also a little skeptical about a thin woman being able to recognize the fitness needs of larger women. Boy, was I wrong.

I could not put this book down. Not only did I find the direction of the book easy to absorb and follow. I also found the accompanying photographs, which showed plus size women in various exercises, very beneficial. In addition the the motivational stories of the women who have followed Ms. Rice's program were very inspirational.

I recommend this book to any woman of size, and even those not of size, who think they can't live an active lifestyle. You can! And Ms. Rice shows you how.

The book takes a while before getting started, with The Program beginning when the book is nearly one-third over. The set-up of weekly themes, goals, and exercises barely "works" on paper, but is definitely too difficult to "work out" in practice. As a result, this book will be a quick "skimmer" for most women. A lot of promises are made, saying that this routine is not sensationalized or a quick fix. Well, I was not looking for a quick fix, but the exercises could use some pizzazz! The photos don't stir me to move, and the author's saccharine style is a turn-off. Though insisting on the uniqueness of Real Fitness for Real Women, the movements seem ordinary. There is some, but not much that a certified trainer couldn't offer, and hasn't offered me in my first two sessions. The writing style often speaks to plus-size women as if we should exclude ourselves from our local gyms, and many plus-sizers, myself included, do not necessarily agree. The resources listed in the end might be more useful if they included samplings of similar "unique" workouts: SistersnShape, KellyBliss, MoretoLove, etc. There is movement happening, and there is a Movement happening. To better serve plus-size fitness, the author might include a chapter focusing on what her program's ideals have in common with other programs and practices (in neighboring states.) Overall, this title could use some re-working. Just as some plus-size women are new to exercise, perhaps the founder of this workout may be a novice writer and author.

It has very good balance between written text and diagrams. This book also has taken enourmous to provide the STEPS in prioritizing first aid, cpr and aed. The quizes at end of each reading provides as a strong learning tool for students. So, you cannot take this book lightly. The authors have made it a crusade in providing such information. Readers are to benefit from the knowledge, and victims you save, well ... God Willing, you will see the light!!! The use of color coded descriptive text also adds to the ease of learning. Again, God Speed.

I'm giving it four stars because I already have extensive medical knowledge. Taking a certification course requires one to give

"textbook" answers and in this case, injured/ill people will not be textbook patients. I aced the course and some of the material in the book I found was misleading. It's not the wrong information, just different from what I would do. It was required for a course for my major, but eventually found that I didn't need it. It teaches basic CPR, wound treatments, poison, animal/insect/marine injures, etc. Lots of knowledge for someone looking to get basic treatment knowledge. I don't know if it can be used to study for the American Heart Associatons tests for CPR.
