Herbal Home Health Care

Herbal Home Health CareThis is a wonderful book for parents who would like to use herbal remedies, but don't know where to start. Dr. Christopher's book is simple and interesting to read. He offers information on cause of disease and how to avoid it, wonderful information on nutrition, an alphabetical list of common childhood aliments with herbal remedies, and a section on how to's i.e. how to make an herbal tea, a fomentation, and a poltice and more. I love this book, I find myself turning to it time and time again!

I really like this book. I wish though that the ingredients had the amounts of each written with it. It is difficult to find how much of each ingredient you use in the formulation. I do have a great deal of respect for the Doctor.

This is a very good, informative book. The only problem I had was that it often didn't have the ratios of the herbal combinations so I couldn't make them myself without just guessing at the amounts.

I have used this book for myself and my family. It is a very helpful resource. I first borrowed it from a friend and then had to buy my own. It does not give the clearest instructions sometimes, but if you have any herbal experience, you can figure it out. I appreciate having a book that advises based on actual experience. This is not a regurgitation of some obscure, vague herbal info.

Good reading. It has a lot of treatments for different problems. I love his formulas, especially the tinctures and liquid extracts. However they are very expensive. It doesn't seem so since most bottles cost about $10 to $12 for about 50 capsules, but for just about every item you have to take 2 capsules three times a day. If you paid $12 for a bottle of 50 and took 6 a day the bottle would only last you about 8-1/2 days, so I only buy the formulas I feel I need the most. The book is great though and you can buy your own herbs online. I would definitely recommend the book.

300 Low-Carb Slow Cooker Recipes: Healthy Dinners that are Ready When You Are

300 Low-Carb Slow Cooker Recipes: Healthy Dinners that are Ready When You AreDana Carpender's previous slow cooker book had been my favorite cookbook. Now, it's this one. I did not notice any missing recipes in the first 6 chapters, but there are loads of new ones that look absolutely yummy. The font and page layout are easy on the eyes. Definitely worth the upgrade from 200 to 300 recipes. You need this book.

Since starting a low carb lifestyle and loving to cook I have found Dana's recipes to be inventive but not

overcomplicated. I just tried the "Stuffed Pepper" recipe last night and it was great. I have also purchased 1001 Low Carb recipes and 300 15-minute recipes. They give me lots of great ideas to try while maintaining my low carb eating plan. If you love to cook and want to keep it low carb give her books a try.

Just made my first recipe -Chicken Paprikash -from the new book, and it is plate-licking wonderful. A conservative estimate would be that over 45 years of cooking, I've made Chicken Paprikash at least 180 times from many, many different recipes. This was absolutely the best. If the rest of the book is this good, we'll be in hog heaven for a good long time.

P.S. the only tinkering I did with the recipe was to degrease and reduce the sauce which forms in the crock pot before adding the sour cream, a maneuver suggested elsewhere in the book.

When other reviewers say that a book has the same basic recipes but a simple spice or protein change counts as a 'new recipe', believe them! I bought this book anyway despite reading this same kind of review about this book (and most of the others). It's true! it's really true.

Like others say, it's also hard to find a recipe. You have to know what it's called, and if it has some odd name instead of just 'meatballs', good luck Chuck! I have three different slow cookers and I'll be damned if any of them make a good version of anything in this book. Three cookers can't be wrong, it has to be the recipes. I found them overdone, or too watery, or just not having the flavorful bang that I expected.

The recipes LOOK GOOD on paper, I can't deny it, I marked several to try and just could not get desirable results in the (basic) 6-8 hour time frame that most recipes seem to call for. Unlike the recipes I love from George Stella and other authors, the flavors in these just do not seem to fall within a range that myself or my family like. Some not enough, others just don't feel like there is a good balance between the spices used. Not anything in here I would try twice, that's for sure.

I could 'trade it in' on Amazon for a whole $1.75! Whoopee, after I paid what, $15 for this new? Ugh.

There are tons of slow cooker recipes for free on the internet, that you can easily adapt to low carb cooking. And they don't rely on Splenda out the wazzoo! I hate the aftertaste of Splenda and a lot of these sweet recipes take such an everloving MOUNTAIN of them, that it makes the final product inedible for our tastes.

Not one I would recommend. And I'll be giving my copy away because my local used bookstores will not buy it from me or even let me trade it in!!

Want 300 Low-Carb Slow Cooker Recipes: Healthy Dinners that are Ready When You Are Discount?

Almost all of the "sweet" recipes in this book, from appetizers to desserts, require splenda. If you're not interested in using artificial sweeteners you might not find this book that useful.

Maximum Strength: Get Your Strongest Body in 16 Weeks with the Ultimate Weight-Training Program

Maximum Strength: Get Your Strongest Body in 16 Weeks with the Ultimate Weight-Training ProgramThis book is a must-read. I heard a lot of hype about this book before purchasing, and I'm glad I finally bought it. I did the entire 4 month routine and honestly, my body feels better than it ever has in the past.

I was used to the traditional bodybuilding bodypart split of chest on Monday, legs on Tuesday, Arms on Wednesday, etc etc. For years, I just accepted that this was the way to train your body. I just dealt with back pain and shoulder pain as part of the "price of working out." Doing 5 exercises for your back in one day, and 5 exercises for your shoulders in one day is the absolute wrong way to train your body, unless you are an actual bodybuilder, but for the average fitness enthusiast, that just doesn't apply.

Eric's book outlines splitting your routines into upper body days and lower body days. The routines are easy to follow. Full detailed pictures, and explanations. One of the most important things he advocates is varying the rep range each week within the 4 week routine. You probably never have done any exercise of 8 sets of 2 reps or 10 sets of 3 reps. You have to keep in mind Eric is a Strength & Conditioning Coach with the goal of getting you stronger. I was hesitant, but you have to open your mind and try it.

My body feels stronger, and more balanced. There are a few non-traditional exercises that you probably have never heard of, or are hesitant to try out. My advice would be to do everything in the book to a T. It works. You may be reluctant to do so much deadlifting and squatting. You may have never hear of scapular push ups, walls slides, face pulls, or behind the neck band pull aparts. Open your mind. Follow the routines exactly and you will be glad you did. I know I am. Your body will feel so much stronger, more balanced, and your posture improves. I hope this doesn't sound like a 3 a.m info-mercial testimonial for the latest fitness product, because it's not. I'm a Certified Personal Trainer and a Certified Gym Rat who has been lifting for 11 years. Open your mind, try the routines, follow to a T. Your body will thank you.

Eric Cressey knows how to get people bigger and stronger, period. I got to do the Maximum Strength Program last summer and during that time I had my 1RM deadlift go from 275 to 400lbs in four months. I am more mobile than ever and I am no longer in pain (used to be low back). I now have great posture and have built a great base of strength.

This book outlines the four phases with multistep pictures of the exercises (both strength training and mobility/warm-up). Also there is a nice section dedicated towards nutrition as well.

Eric is 110% correct when he says you need to get stronger to get bigger. If you have stalled with your progress and want to get bigger and stronger, there is no better way then with Maximum Strength, for under $15 you can not go wrong.

Buy Maximum Strength: Get Your Strongest Body in 16 Weeks with the Ultimate Weight-Training Program Now

Eric Cressey delivers on his promise to get you stronger in 16 weeks. I know because as a former client I completed the Maximum Strength program and posted personal bests in all of my lifts. Which lifts? The ones that matter, that show true strength. Completing Maximum Strength, I would have been pleased if only my bench press numbers increased, and they did, but so did my deadlift, squat, and chin-up (my broad jump increased, too).

The 16-week program is not the only reason to buy "Maximum Strength." Eric does a phenomenal job of showing how to perform each exercise correctly, which a) eliminated bad habits I picked up in the past and b) keeps me injury free.

It's the old story of teaching the man how to fish: Eric provides a program that increases strength and sets a path to continue getting stronger after those 16 weeks. If you're serious about strength training, you need to read "Maximum Strength."

Read Best Reviews of Maximum Strength: Get Your Strongest Body in 16 Weeks with the Ultimate Weight-Training Program Here

In Eric's introduction to this book, he describes his aspiration to be strong and fit, but not huge. The introduction alone is worth the price of the book. This is a man that deadlifted 650 lbs in competition at a body weight of 181. He knows how to get people strong, yet keep them healthy. His entire program is designed to progress in power, speed and absolute strength while addressing many commonly flawed movement patterns.

I'm a 47 year old male that has begun to find it difficult to move without pain and stiffness. I am now 9 weeks into the 16 week program and I have progressed to the point were my passive ROM in my joints has improved as well as my mobility. I haven't benched in 4 years due to shoulder pain and had all but conceded that I would never again be able to, but I'm now benching without pain. I just can't say enough positive things about this book and for the price is a steal.

Want Maximum Strength: Get Your Strongest Body in 16 Weeks with the Ultimate Weight-Training Program Discount?

A fine treatise on the fundamentals of strength. It is precise, well researched and innovative. Also, I really liked the voice of the book....casual and humorous but informative.

This guy is close to genius on the subject. A free thinker that backs his theorys with science. He draws heavily on research and builds his program from the fundamentals. That combination together with the innovative style makes a unique approach plausible and possibly the bible on the subject.

How to Start a Home-based Makeup Artist Business (Home-Based Business Series)

How to Start a Home-based Makeup Artist BusinessI'm generally skeptical of "build your dream career!" type books but I very much enjoyed this one, which was sent to me as a gift. I surprised myself by reading it in a single 4-hour sitting, admittedly skimming some of the kit-building sections (since that ship has already sailed!) I'm a fast reader when I'm engaged with the material. I'm so glad d.d., whose reputation and talent I was already well aware of, got to contribute her expertise toward this series. She's worked in many areas of the industry this book, as per the title, focuses on starting a business to cater to private clientele (everyday women, such as brides if you're also interested in the commercial fashion world, you'll want to pick up Crystal Wright's Career Guide as a companion to this volume).

This is NOT a makeup how-to guide (although there are some great makeup tips included in the text) and it's not extensively illustrated (I giggled a bit at the color wheel which... wasn't printed in color) instead, this is a book for artists who already know or are learning how to do makeup and want to build their own careers. Marketing, branding, networking, advertising you name it. The information in the book is very useful and made me feel good about what I'm doing and have already done to build my business, but I got a few new ideas as well about networking and target marketing. And I particularly enjoyed when her sense of humor peeked through (the remarks about "nice crease color" and "wow, your brow bones are so shimmery..." had me in stitches!) It's a business topic, but presented in a very readable and engaging way.

I receive a lot of inquiries from new/aspiring artists and I will be sure to point them toward d.d.'s book, because what so many of them need is NOT a new crease-contouring technique, but a realistic picture of what marketing entails, how to target the right clients, etc. all that business stuff that artists aren't always great at!

I like the concept of making weight loss more of a spiritual journey, but Chumley's religious approach is a little more than I can accept. I think if you are really at rock bottom regarding your weight, or if you are quite religious to start with, this book is more likely to be helpful to you. On the plus side, it is simple to understand, concise and well-written. Not a bad read, and has some helpful bits even if you're unable to accept the entire book as a new way of life.

101 Feng Shui Tips for Your Home (Feng Shui Series)

101 Feng Shui Tips for Your HomeWell, it's a simple story: I was interested in the subject and picked up a few books that would introduce me to it. All the books I bought were supposedly written for beginners but this is the only one that I was actually able to read and apply from start to end (the others being too complicated or abstract). With 20/20 hindsight, I can honestly say this is the only book that you'll need to start making significant changes to your sorroundings and your life.

Extremely useful, it is sitting on my coffee table right now and I refer to it almost everyday.

This is the best beginner's book for fengshui. It is clear, simple and well written. The best part is that it is easy to begin. Each of the tips in the book are independent examples. You can pick and choose as you go through the book. If you have never read any thing about fengshui before, you should start here. This book was featured by the FengShui BookClub(tm) on fengshuihelp

It is badly written, contradicts itself constantly, and the writter is obviously not an expert on the subject.

It is pure bull aimed for those looking for New Age solutions.

If you really want to learn about Feng Shui, read A master course in Feng Shui by Eva Wong. Be ready to do some study and hard thinking, but it is worth it. You'll realize that most of the books you've read on the subject are just based on the fact that we want to better our lives and fortunes and will practicaly do anything to achieve it. Don't let others get rich on behalf of your unkowledge. Research before you believe. Good luck.

Rainforest Home Remedies: The Maya Way To Heal Your Body and Replenish Your Soul

Rainforest Home Remedies: The Maya Way To Heal Your Body and Replenish Your SoulThis book has remedies for any ailment a woman could encounter. From wrinkles to cramps to irritable husbands. There's a great section on massage for children to fix anything from nail biting to colic. It also seems there is a tea recipie for anything you could ever suffer from.

My personal testamony: I have suffered from chronic menstral cramps for the past 5 years and no doctor could find the cause of the problem. This book helped me realize that my uterus is tilted back due to years of dacing and running on concrete. By massaging my abdomen using the arvigo method taught in this book, for 2-3 minutes a day, I'm able to control the cramping without drugs. You don't know how amazing that feels!

I'm not very experienced in natural healing, and I must admit it was a little overwhelming at first, but now I feel very confident in the subject.

This would make the perfect gift to anyone with or preparing to have children.

I felt like I was in training as an apprentice while reading this book. It is an excellent source of knowledge for Rainforest herbs learned from a H'men (Shaman or Mayan Healer) and for some plants we grow in the US. My only regret is not reading this book prior to visiting Belize via a cruise ship and not going to Ixchel Farm. (I definitely will on next trip). The source of reference in the back of the book is excellent for resources on Herbs. There are recipes for teas and tinctures useful for all kinds of ailments. Rosita also shared her knowledge learned from Don Elijio Panti on massaging the uterus to center a tipped uterus which is the cause for many of women's health problems today.(if we could only teach our US doctor's this cure!). Very Spiritual Book alsoteaching the Spiritual side of healing and how important that is in the process of healing. The lessons I learned from this book, I will practice in my life. I read this book prior to reading her other book "Sastun". It is also an excellent book about the Mayan healer Don Elijio Panti and her apprenticeshipI couldn't put this book down.

This book is a treasure and should be followed by reading her first book, Sastun, my appreticeship with a Maya healer, which followers her journey to Belize and her delightful relationship with Don Elijio Panti, one of the last most respected healers of Belize.

When I first bought this book I thought that it was going to be just like other New-agey books that have flooded the market recently and have made fanciful distortions of the peoples of Meso-America.

This book was a great book in may respects because when I looked at the remedies and read the explanations given about the spiritual illnesses I saw that they were accurate. I grew up being treated with the wonderful indigenous medical system that was devised thousands of years ago in Mexico and Central America and was glad that this book contained information that would serve as a great primer to those who are wanting to know what the medicine of the MesoAmerican people really is like. Rosita Arvigo did a wonderful Job!

I am of Pipil descent and I believe that this book is one of the best books out there on the subject which it covers and you cant go wrong with the price either.

When Diabetes Hits Home

When Diabetes Hits HomeI normally turn my nose up at these psycho-babble type books that pretend to know what it is that I'm going through as a person with diabetes for over 20 years. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this book was real. Dr. Rapaport hits a lot of familiar chords, and knows her subject inside and out. She is not patronizing, and her style is clear and easy to follow. I found that I was able to apply her method of positive reframing not only to my diabetes related situations, but to my every day life situations as well. I strongly recommend this book for anyone living with diabetes, for the patient herself, or family, friends and significant others. I hope to see more of Dr. Rapaport's writing in the future. Thanks to her for giving me an improved way to deal.

This book is for anyone who lives with, is related to, is a friend of or knows someone with diabetes as well as for the person with diabetes. Some may think this book is for a nuclear family with one person who has diabetes but, the author covers many different realtionships like older grandparents and how their children or even grandchildren can relate to them. The book contains cited resources for further reading and many personal vignettes from the author's professional and personl experiences. Dr. Rapaport goes beyond describing the usual exercise, diet and medication management aspects of living with and coping with diabetes. She includes instruction in stress reduction, relaxation techniques, practical examples in assertive communication and other perspectives about living with diabetes. Attitiude and how it impacts on diabetes care and relationships is explored at length. For example, if one views diabetes as a psychosocial and spiritual condition with the medica! l complications the focus of treatment is on the lifestyle and relationships in the person with diabetes life.

Acupressure's Potent Points: A Guide to Self-Care for Common Ailments

Acupressure's Potent Points: A Guide to Self-Care for Common AilmentsIn a nutshell, Acupressure's Potent Points: a Guide to Self-Care for Common Ailments shows the reader how they can use acupressure on themselves to relieve stress related problems.

So what exactly is acupressure? Well, its an ancient healing art that uses the fingers to press on key points on the surface of the skinwhich in turn stimulates the body's natural self-curing abilities. More specifically, when these points are pressed on for several minutes, they release muscular tension and promote the circulation of blood and the body's life force to aid healing. If at this point you're wondering how acupressure differs from ACUPUNCTURE, well, there's not much differencethe same points are used for both, its's just that one uses needles and the other uses your fingers.

And just what makes these acupressure points or "potent points" so special? Well, as the book explains, they are places on the skin that are especially sensitive to bioelectrical impulses in the body and conduct these impulses readily. So, by stimulating these points with your fingers, you're triggering the release of endorphins (your body's natural pain killers) which blocks the pain. This in turn increases the flow of blood and oxygen to the affected area which promotes healing and causes the muscles to relax.

Neat huh? This kind of info is covered in Part I of the book. Part II, which is about 85% of the book, covers the acupressure points themselves and the techniques for the specific ailmentsand boy do they cover the ailments! Just about everything you can imagine is covered from acne to fainting to shoulder tension. Pictures are a plenty and show you the exact areas to press onit's a pretty easy process and the book makes it simple to do. Also of note is that there are two ways to use the book, you can look up a problem by system (i.e. digestive system, immune system, etc.) via a handy chart, or simply look a problem up by flipping around as the ailments are covered in alphabetical order.

The book ends with two appendices, one being a nice point location chart, and the other a summary of the potent points. All-in-all its a pretty clear and easy to use book that should help many put an end to their stress-related aches and pains. Other pain books that might be of interest include The 5-Minute Plantar Fasciitis Solution for readers suffering from plantar fasciitis.

I was skeptical of acupressure and only bought the book because my massage therapist uses it along with trigger point massage. I took it with me on a recent vacation. On the plane, I found that there were guided procedures to use for sinus problems and another set for earaches. I am always sniffling and my ears always hurt when the plane lands. I followed the procedures and found I could breathe out of my left nostril easily for the first time in years (without any drugs). Also, my ears did not hurt when the plane landed and I could hear right away. These two things alone are worth the price of the book to me.

BUY THIS BOOK!!! I can't say enough great things about this book! With it's easy-to-understand text and helpful pictures, it's amazing how quickly you can be on the road to better health. After just one session, my sciatic nerve was no longer causing me pain. It also helped my lower back, as well as my migraines and sinus problems. While it's true that this isn't meant as a substitute for medical treatment, acupressure does work, and in just a few minutes. Almost instant relief without doctor visits and/or medication!! This book truly covers many of the aches and pains we tend to "just live with" every day. It also has treatments for emotional issues, such as anxiety, stress, and depression, to name a few. It's well worth the price: you can't even see a doctor for $13.60. In fact, I bought this book because I needed an alternative approach to pain management, as I don't have medical insurance. I'm so impressed with this book, I've bought 3 more copies for friends, and will continue buying more until everyone I know who needs one, has a copy. If you've been suffering with chronic pain like I did for years, please do yourself a favor and buy this book.

Want Acupressure's Potent Points: A Guide to Self-Care for Common Ailments Discount?

I needed a quick reference for the accupressure points that are relevant to various ailments, but this book drowns the essential usefulness of accupressure with entirely too many words. It tries to present theory and anecdotes in addition to a listing of accupressure points, and ends up being unbearably repetitive. While each treatment has a step-by-step accompanied by photos and lengthy descriptions, a better format would have been to present a short list of the most effective points followed by secondary points for each treatment. As it is, a person who is trying to perform the steps would be too busy reading, rather than concentrating on the points themselves.

A much more practical guide is the very brief but far more useful book by Carola Beresford Cooke. If, on the other hand, you are looking for a lengthy thesis, then this book would be to your taste.

Surviving the U.S. Health System: Insurance, Providers, Well Care, Sick Care

Surviving the U.S. Health System: Insurance, Providers, Well Care, Sick CareThis is truly a valuable resource for anyone who wants the latest information about managing their way through the US healthcare system, written by someone who really cares about getting it right. Sherry Kahn has done outstanding research into preventive healthcare, treatment options, integrative care and the impact of health care reform. The lists of resources alone make this an important book to own. You recognize in the very first chapter that the author's approach is unbiased and comprehensive, delivered with a great deal of common sense; this is a book you can trust. Sherry Kaufield, MA, FACHE.

I've been a medical writer for 25+ years and this is the best information source I've seen for anyone who is uninsured or under-insured. Plus, the book gives details of what to expect when the Affordable Healthcare Act ("Obamacare") goes into full effect in 2014. It includes guidance for anyone choosing an insurance plan, including Medicare.

With regard to the book's medical information, the emphasis is on preventive care and integrative medicine, which I really appreciate. There are fascinating chapters on concierge doctors, surviving a hospital stay, and "medical tourism" (going to other countries for less expensive health care). Everyone from laypeople to medical students to experienced clinicians will benefit from reading this book.

Sherry Kahn has taken up by the hand and led us through the very complex system that our medical care has become- a system that has not been serving us as well as it should. Her insights and advice are invaluable. She gives amazing resources for taking care of costs, knowing how to find the right plan for you, be in employer-provided, self-pay, or Medicare, and more, including finding the right service and practitioner for the specific issue. I didn't even know what I didn't know till now. READ THIS! The health and life you save may be your own-and your family's.

My House Our House: Living Far Better for Far Less in a Cooperative Household

My House Our House: Living Far Better for Far Less in a Cooperative HouseholdThree capable, strong, independent, professiional working women have proven cooperative living is possible and enjoyable if you're willing to co-operate,negotiate,and respect

your house mates. Patience and a good sense of humor help too! What is left out about their personal lives is as significant as the details included. Confident, but not

cocky, and not given to self-promotion or bragging. The information, insights, and questions at the end of the book make it a thorough "how to" guide book.

Anyone in any type of relationship or living arrangement can learn from this story.

If you are planning on sharing a house with friends, this book is one that you will want to read. It certainly helps you in being aware of issues that should be addressed before living together.

Buy My House Our House: Living Far Better for Far Less in a Cooperative Household Now

This is a complete and detailed look at an example of successful group living, which manages to be both informative and interesting. It is a good mix of personal, but not overly personal, narrative about what led each of the three single women authors to set up their communal household and very practical checklists and suggestions for persons who may consider such an arrangement. I enjoyed reading it out of curiosity about how this could work in practice. The authors are frank in discussing the potential downsides and real challenges they faced themselves, but make it clear that five years in, the arrangement is a winner for each of them.

Although a how-to guide to cooperative living, My House, Our House would be useful reading for ANYONE who shares living space.

The book is well organized, well written, and easy to read. It is more than a list of do's and don'ts. The authors tell the story of the house they bought and the home they made of it. There is even a menu from one of their Thanksgiving dinners.

There is much practical information about questions to ask, boundaries to set, and other nuts and bolts of making this type of living arrangement work. However, the authors also make it clear that serendipity was part of their decision. They were doing a drive by tour of houses for sale, when one of them impulsively made a left turn down an especially pretty street. There was a small "for sale by owner" sign. It stood in front of their dream house.

Loving Someone Who Has Dementia: How to Find Hope while Coping with Stress and Grief

Loving Someone Who Has Dementia: How to Find Hope while Coping with Stress and GriefReviewer Richard Blake wrote "Pauline Boss writes with authority, conviction, and compassion. "Loving Someone Who Has Dementia: How to Find Hope while Coping with Stress and Grief" will be a welcome addition to the resource shelf of individual and professional caregivers, family members, counselors, and clergy. Dr. Boss introduces a whole new concept of managing caregiver stress and grief."

That pretty much says it all. (And makes a tough act to follow! A tip of the hat to you, Richard.)

We all think we're familiar with dementia until it strikes someone close to us. Then we find out "the hard way" that of all the terrible illnesses that can befall us, this one is as close to pure cruelty as it can get.

While nothing can completely prepare us for "stress and grief" that accompanies dementia, "Loving Someone..." is a GREAT place to start because it's written specifically for you and me the caregivers rather than as a "textbook" discussion of this horrendous disease.

I found it to be well-written, insightful, wise and compassionate. In fairness (considering that at the time of this writing there are two "scathing" one-star reviews)I'm compelled to mention that an immediate family member has just been "officially" diagnosed by two doctors (i.e. "second opinion") and this is the FIRST AND ONLY book I've read so far. On the other hand, we've purchased a total of five copies between family members, and we've all found it to be immensely helpful at this early stage. I don't think any one book can cover this topic "from A-to-Z". As reviewer Blake said, it "will be a welcome addition to the resource shelf..." I agree, except that I'd consider it a good STARTING POINT, and that the additions follow as needed!

I recommend it without reservation.

This book doesn't tell you how to get your Dad to take a shower. It doesn't tell you how to take the car keys away from your mother. It doesn't tell you when it's time for assisted living or nursing home care. Instead, it tells you how not to go crazy right along with your loved one. Actually, it helps you understand that you aren't crazy -the conflicting emotions you're feeling are normal.

The tone of this book is a bit medical and formal at times, but not so much that a tired mom caring for her aging mother-in-law with alzheimers can't read it. I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed at first that this book wasn't going to help us figure out the issue of the car keys and assisted living, but I was wrong. I was wrong to not put value on reading about my emotions, my husband's emotions, and our mental health as caregivers.

Two of my favorite chapters included the chapter on Family Rituals, Celebrations, and Gatherings as well as the chapter outlining Seven Guidelines for the Journey. As the holidays are approaching and we're trying to figure out how to adapt them yet again for my mother-in-law's increasing confusion, I needed to read that. And with a recent increase in her care needs, I also needed to read the seven guidelines for the journey. Because it is a journey ... a long and tiring journey. But Pauline Boss helped me see the benefits of the journey again.

This is a fantastic book. I wish that it had been available when my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease several years ago. I am giving my copy to a friend who, after reading it immediately, will mail it to another friend whose mother has just been diagnosed with this horrendous disease. Dr. Boss' emphasis is on the caregiver rather than the patient and what the caregiver can do in order to be both more effective ("isolation leads to higher burden and depression for caregivers--and in turn, this leads to more behavioral problems in the person who has dementia") and survive with his/her own life intact. The author gives a sobering statistic: "caregivers die at a rate 3 percent higher than people the same age who are not caring for someone with dementia."

Dr. Boss uses the words "ambiguous loss," over and over to describe when your loved one is here but isn't here and you are faced with an imperfect relationship that is not the way it once was, it never will be that way again and it will get even worse. One thing you can do to make things better for everyone involved is to continue with family rituals: celebrating birthdays, weddings, graduations, Thanksgiving and religious holidays as well. She also discusses the difference between depression and grief, reminding us that all too often professionals see a caregiver as being depressed she/he is actually experiencing extended grieving and is sad, a perfectly normal phenomenon for someone whose loved one is slipping away with dementia.

The author, to her everlasting credit, debunks the myth of that awful word "closure," which she points out has been done to death by pop psychologists and television reporters. In our society where everything should be easily cut and dried, we are supposed to get over everything and get on with our neat lives. She points out--and gives example after example--that that is not the way of the world, particularly when it comes to caring for someone with dementia. The latest studies on the subject indicate that we can live more easily with grief if we do not try so hard to get over it and that dementia teaches us that grief's door is never completely shut. (The great American poet Emily Dickinson, whose poem on hope Dr. Boss quotes, may have had that door of grief in mind when she said that sorrow has its own season.)

The author emphasizes that the caregiver should avoid isolation at all costs and seek out what she calls his/her psychological family--those persons you have created in your heart and mind as your family--as well as doing something for yourself on a regular basis, whether it be going to a museum or a movie, reading a book or poetry, engaging in physical exercise, playing cards one night a week with friends, going out to dinner, whatever will make your life easier and relieve your stressful situation.

Dr. Boss also includes a list of warning signs you should look for if you are in need of professional help while being a caregiver and suggests that you not use the professional who is caring for the person with dementia but rather see someone else. She encourages us to just do the best we can do, that hope lives in understanding that we are doing the best we can do, to remember that there should be no stigma associated with dementia, that this disease is not anyone's fault, and to remember that life isn't always fair.

This writer, a psychotherapist now in her 70's, is obviously someone full of a lifetime of wisdom. I came away from this book convinced that Dr. Boss is a wonderful practitioner. Had I had any doubts, I would have been sold when I got to the passage about her father who came to the United States in 1929 from Switzerland. Although he loved his adopted country, he carried for the rest of his life a photograph hidden in a secret compartment of his billfold of his hometown, Burgdorf, Switzerland. You can feel Dr. Boss' deep love for her father as she describes finding this photograph after her father's death. She uses his situation to illustrate our two families, the one present and the other, the one we hold in our "hearts and minds." We can keep those we love who are out of reach forever with us in other ways.

If you are taking care of someone with dementia or know someone who is--and most of us unfortunately do--this book, written in accessible language for the ordinary reader rather than professionals, has page after page of lifesaving advice and help. It concludes with a long list of available resources.

Highly recommended.

This book is flowing and clear, and reads as though the author were in the room speaking her words. It really touches the heart of the matter, the reality of loving someone who is there, but not really (or not constantly). It affirms the scope of the matter of being in relationship with someone who in some way is missing, and in the case of dementia, someone who remains with you, in ... odd and diminished relationship, requiring often the care given to that of a very young child. I found the book very moving, comforting, and useful (my Mother has a moderate form of dementia), and have already given copies of it to family members.

Ambiguous loss. This is the term Pauline Boss uses to describe Dementia. She hit the nail on the head! My Mother in Law was diagnosed several years ago with this cruel disease and has progressively drifted further and further away from us.

Reading through this book I felt as though I was sitting with someone that has been down this road and understands just how the disease effects everyone in the family. I've read and reread passages and now keep it close by. Its helpful to re-read a few pages on those difficult days when you feel no one understands. Thank you Ms. Boss.

The Healing Home: Practical Ways to Harmonize Your Home and Energize Your Spirit

The Healing Home: Practical Ways to Harmonize Your Home and Energize Your SpiritThe Healing Home Book is at long last a book that gives the reader easy to follow, effective practices to create a home filled with peace, light, happiness and love.

Based on the Native Tradition of the Medicine Wheel, it allows the reader to pin-point areas of disharmony and resolve them using the power of tested and tried methods based on years of experience by the author.

Learning to deal with ley lines and water lines without disturbing the harmony of the Earth is as important as clearing stuck emotional and spiritual energies within the living space in an effective and safe way.

The second part of the book gives beautiful ways of re-connecting to the source and creating balance within ourselves, so we are well prepared and able to redress the balance within our living and working space.

I would recommend this book to everyone who is aware of the importance of balance and harmony in the space that we inhabit, so that they can create for themselves a life filled with happiness, peace, abundance and health.

Strength Training For Seniors: An Easy & Complete Step By Step Guide For YOUI'm just recovering from foot surgery and have been cleared to start my workouts again.. but as usual it's hard to get started. It help me to decide to get off the sidelines and get started.

This easy to read book was nice to read and informative. I did learn quite a few things (like glucose levels and sleep are improved more through strength training than medication). I bought a house last year and have allowed my work on it to dissuade me from my regular workout routine. This book has refreshed my memory about my absolute need as I get older to return to strength training and walking/hiking. I am now determined to start first thing in the morning, and my goal is to once again be able to keep up with my son as we jogged for the car! Thanks for the inspiration!
