Timeless Makeup

Timeless MakeupI love makeup books and anything makeup-related, and when I saw this book on Amazon while I was browsing, I thought I'd pick it up since I've noticed that I can't quite wear the same makeup at forty-one as I did at thirty-one. This is a really great book that gives useful information for women over forty, but there are a few drawbacks.

The positives:

* good overview of the tools/brushes to have in your makeup toolbox

* nice overview of the best formulations of makeup for the over-40 age group

* fantastic step-by-step instructions of how to do things like contour your face to visually lift it

* excellent breakdown of how shape your brows in order to lift your eyes; the sample photos are really valuable

* nice section on selecting glasses and modifying your makeup to wear with glasses

The two main negatives have to do in the section called Looks at the back of the book, where Morris gives you twenty-six makeup looks broken down into steps. While I love this section, most of the photos are so tiny that they are impossible to see, especially for over-forty eyes. This instructions here could also be much more detailed. For instance, the cover look with the winged eyeliner was a reason I bought this book since I struggle to do winged eyeliner on myself. While Morris gives the excellent tip of using Scotch tape to get the angle right, she doesn't explain how to graduate the liner along the lash line, so that it starts thin at the inner edge of the eye and widens out. Those are the kind of small tips that I was hoping this book would contain.

That being said, this is still a nice book to add to your makeup library. The women in it are stunning, and I love seeing how women over fifty can still rock a smoky eye or red lip and look elegant and classy while doing so. It inspired me to not be afraid of bolder makeup, even at my age.

Beautiful pictures, some good advice, but over all not that great. There is nothing really new in it and practical tips like in the ones in the books from Bobbi Brown are missing at all.

A great book, especially for those of us getting older. Most beauty books completely ignore the over 40 set. This book shows tips I'd never heard of; has these tips applied on women of varied ages; and, I have applied these tips on myself, and noticed an appreciable difference. There are lots of great pictures to walk you through the application procedures. A book for those who want to look better and fresher with cosmetics, not surgery, and without trying to look 20 again.

This book is full of tips and tricks to keep us looking our best at any age. Advice was laid out and explicit with photos, so it was easy to understand. It also unexpectedly made me feel better about the aging process which can be scary, as it happens to us all. I just turned 51 and already, I've been able to improve my appearance immensely and feel more confident when I leave the house. And it's true what the book says, "Less is more."

I got this book from the library (I will end up buying it) and was amazed at how many wonderful and practical tips/instructions/photographs there were to enhance our natural beauty. At last a book which is helpful for the over 50's, or for those whose skin puts them into the "mature" category. I'm much older than 50 (though I inherited great skin from my mother) and don't look it. I have used some of the info in this book to improve my own appearance. The primary reason I give this book 4 stars instead of 5 is that the author advocates lining the inner rim of the eye. Eyeliner pencils and gels become unsanitary and contaminated quickly and using them on the inner rim of the eye can lead to serious infections.
