The Men's Health Gym Bible

The Men's Health Gym BibleThe topics covered in the book are wide ranging and informative but the editing in some parts leave little to be desired. For example, in chapter 13 on the Muscle-Building Workout, the instructions and the actual layout of the workouts don't coincide. The instructions say the leg workouts should be done as straight sets but in workout B, the first two leg exercises are listed as A1 and A2, suggesting a superset. Also, the instructions explained the workouts as upper body/lower body, upper body /lower body but the 1st upper body workout includes the Bulgarian Split Squat and the 2nd upper body workout includes Cable Pull Through, both leg movements. The 2nd upper body workout also has Lateral Raise as part of an arm tri-set. I'm guessing it should've been in the shoulder portion instead, where it shows a superset of Hang Clean and DB Shoulder Press.

Other errors I noted were the illustrations of the various machines. The Seated Calf Raise on page 212 looks an awful lot like a Preacher Curl Machine to me and is that really a 45 degree Leg Press Machine on page 208? On page 282, that doesn't look like a Glute Hame Raise Machine. There are others but you get the idea.

There's a lot of good information in this book but unfortunately, the editing mistakes may leave novice lifters confused about what machines they're actually looking at in their gym and whether they're conducting their exercises in the proper order.

This book has a wealth of information useful to someone who recently joined or is considering joining a gym. The book is well laid out and very easy to read. This book was perfect for me. The exercises are well illustrated. Information is presented concisely. The book is free of one person's opinions. Too much authoritative lecturing is a problem that plagues many books in this category. This book avoids that mistake. I can highly recommend this book to anyone who is considering joining a gym or already belongs to one and wants to maximize the benefits of membership.

This book does a very good job of de-mystifying the gym work out. There are quite a few devices and gizmos that I was never quite sure how to use, and this book explains what they do and how to use them. Also, it does a very good job of categorizing different exercises, providing many ways to work different muscle groups. For instance, chest exercises using no weights, free weights, bars, benches, cages, machines, etc. Having more options at my disposal makes it easier to work out. There are some editing problems, as noted in another review. The most annoying for me was the inconsistency between some of the charts and the written-out explanations for certain routines. Specifically, the muscle-building exercise program in chapter 13 is exactly what I was looking for...except that the chart and the workout expalanation don't match up. They are inconsistent regarding when to superset, the order of the exercises, and duration. I actually went to some online body-building forums to get some ideas on how to best implement the routine. But the bottom line is that the book has been helpful, and has provided me additional motivation to get to the gym and try different things.

I've always viewed "Men's Health" as more of a fashion magazine than a real resource for health and fitness. Their (many) books seem to be no different, focusing on style over substance. "The Men's Health Gym Bible" actually does contain some useful information, but if you've spent any amount of time working out in a gym, it's old hat to you.

A friend of mine was looking to start working out and just wanted some basic info to get him started. He was like most guys and still had the fitness knowledge he learned in high school. Unfortunately this book was too basic for even him. The limited info on any given subject and gratuitous praise for certain brands of gym equipment are just ridiculous.

There are many many better resources out there. Skip this one.

How Big is a Placenta Bowl?: And Other Weird Questions You'll Ask When Planning a Home BirthFinally, a concise, well-researched and matter of fact guide for women considering a home birth. The author isn't preachy her main goal is to educate those who want to explore home birth but aren't getting the information they need. As a home birther herself, the author peppers the book with her own experiences and presents the material she wishes she had as a first time, home birthing mom how to choose the right midwife; how to deal with inquisitive relatives, friends and colleagues; state by state guides to midwifery; checklists; and advice for the partners and husbands sharing in the journey. The result is a one of a kind reference for pregnant women, mothers, midwives, and ob/gyns. What really sets this book apart is its fresh and funny perspective the writer doesn't take herself too seriously. What she does take seriously is the amount of thought that she put into every chapter of this invaluable resource.

As a home birth midwife, I liked the premise of the book. Many clients want to understand what home birth is like. However, the author states too many of her biases i.e.

I like her distinctions between a doula and a midwife (p. 22) as well as her tips for interviewing a midwife (p. 27) but I did not agree with her specific requirements of a midwife (p.29) Not every client needs the most experienced midwife for their birth. Not every state licenses midwives. Not every client wants to needs a CPM, CM or CNM, a lay midwife can be an perfectly acceptable option for some clients. Not every state allows formal backup arrangements (the state of CA, where the author is from and gave birth, requires it, but not every state even allows formal backup). I found her presumptions of a skilled midwife misleading (p.30 and p.31) ("maybe the midwife doesn't do a great job preparing moms for the rigors of childbirth or maybe she doesn't offer enough comfort in labor" when on page 22 she clearly states that a midwife is not a labor support person or a doula.) I'm so glad that this author had a pretty straight forward and manageable labor and home birth but not everyone does and it's not the mother's fault nor the midwife's fault if labor isn't managemenable and a mom needs to transfer from home to hospital. The author blames herself for feeling pain during childbirth "I wasn't skilled enough to avoid pain" (p43), and didn't know anyone who had given birth on a birth stool (p46). While in CA, a home birthed baby needs to see a pediatrician within 24 hours, that is not the rule in other states.

I bought 6 of these books at the recommendation of a client with the intention of passing them out to clients but there is too much misleading information for me to share them with anyone.

This seems like a very unual and helpful book to me. Not a book for deciding if homebirth is right for you as much as considerations you will need to make after coming to that decision. It does have some helpful charts like the legal stats of having a midwife and insurance issues. It was a pleasant read.

So I paged through to find a world of beauty: Beauty in the graceful layout and generous number of lovely photographs. Beauty in the simple text that serves as a beginner's guide to Reiki: it's history and principles; the healing treatments involving the endocrine system, seven chakras, emotions and basic hand positions; first aid practices to relieve headache, back pain, stress and other common ailments; special treatments for children, the elderly, pets and plants; Reiki and other therapies such as color and crystal healing.

It truly was an introduction that motivated me to study more, find a Reiki teacher and learn to treat myself and others with Reiki as a spiritual way of life. Though I have since read many other worthwhile books, more detailed or inclusive, I still go back to this beauty for inspiration and guidance.

It's not as informative as it could be. In fact, you're probably better off doing a couple of Google searches for 'reiki' than you would be buying this book, unless you were looking for an outline of the discipline. For what it is, it's not bad.

This book was part of my natural, homemade cleaning supplies display. Dozens of people picked up the book and were very curious to know where I got it. They all wanted to purchase it right then and there. I wished I had contacted Raleigh or Microcosm Publishing to become a distributor!

Throughout the day, many people asked me for natural ways to get rid of pests, clean different types of surfaces, etc. and I often picked up the book and turned right to Raleigh's very detailed Table of Contents. How to get rid of fleas? Clean wood floors? Make liquid dish soap? It's all right there.

From gardening to essential oils, Raleigh included it all! Not to mention the fact that the book is beautifully handwritten and illustrated. I often get my tips from the internet, but Raleigh's book is wonderful to leave in the kitchen or bathroom as an instant recipe book and guide.

A definite must-have starting guide for anyone interested in living a more sustainable lifestyle.

I love books, and have collected quite a library of volumes relating to my varied interests. Some of those interests are natural/herbal health care, natural body care, "green" household cleaning, and urban homesteading. All of those books in my library have one or more of the same ideas contained in this little volume. Yet for some reason, I absolutely love this book. It may be the awkward but adorable handwriting complete with heart-dotted i's, reminding me of my middle school diary. It could be the cute illustrations, with flowers that talk and bubble letter titles, or the little flowers and stars that emphasize the text. I have rarely read a book of this type that uses words like "nast" and "barf", or describes how to deal with crabs or yeast infections with such aplomb. And really, while it may contain recipes and ideas I have found in many other places, it also has some very new ideas that I enjoyed with surprise. All in all, I have the strangest feeling that this book will see more use in my house than several other more comprehensive volumes in my library, and I know that I will have fun in the process.

For anybody who is wondering, this book was published by Microcosm Publishing, a DIY and punk rock publishing house. Keep this in mind when coming across "offensive" terms and phrases. Quite frankly though, I found none. I did however find this book to be extensively useful and reader friendly.

The articles are all hand written in very neat penmanship, all the illustrations are hand drawn, and everything in the book has been tried out first by the author. There are three sections in the book Health and First Aid, Nontoxic Cleaning and Body Care, and Gardening. The first section includes directions on how to make tinctures and salves, a list of herbs that are antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antiviral, and also a list of which herbs and essential oils to avoid if pregnant. More useful than you know. The second section is a combination of replacements for bleach, Clorox and the like, and then recipes for herbal shampoos and whatever else you might call body care. The last section is pretty self explanatory. Gardening without choking up the ground with a jug of Wal-Mart bought chemicals. Chapters include composting, space managing and fertilizing.

I personally found the First Aid section most useful, and most tailored to my needs. This book is very informative and well worth the money. It doesn't take up a load of space (roughly 7 x 5 inches and half an inch thick, 125 pages), it goes over personal safety at the beginning of the book and includes a further reading section (more DIY punk rock goodness) at the back.

It isn't lofty or pompous, or some 100% organic and natural twerpy, skinny assed vegan kid preaching some rhetoric they heard in their college dorm. I think it is well written and friendly, there isn't any political commentary slipped in between instructions on how to turn crunchy dried things into medicinal liquid (which is more rare than you would believe). It's a good book if you are interested in an alternative way to keep yourself and your home healthy and clean.

Some skills are just good to have. "Make Your Place: Affordable, Sustainable, Nesting Skills" is a collection of simple and effective skills to improve one's life around the house. The skills range from dealing with the simple messes, to the injuries one faces in life, to dealing with menstrual-cycle induced bad moods. "Make Your Place" is a fine and recommended read for anyone who wants to make their life a little smoother and more enjoyable.

This book is a little smaller than I expected but that's not a bad thing -it's a portable size to keep handy when you need to look something up. It's got three (all handwritten & hand-drawn) sections, one on health/beauty, one for household cleaning, and one on gardening/composting. I found the gardening/composting section most helpful with all its detailed tips and really practical hints. Trellising, sprouting, and good garden-buddies to plant together or in rotation. I was really impressed with the depth of the information in this section.

I didn't get much out of the other two sections, but I'm already pretty into making my own cleaning supplies and don't keep around near as many ingredients as this book's recipes call for (so many different essential oils, for example). So it wasn't the make-me-a-better-housewife book I expected in that regard -mostly just cream, spray, etc. recipes. But, if you don't already have your favorite recipes for, say, a window cleaner, or an ointment for a cut, you can get them here, and they look good too!

T.N.T.: Total Neck and TrapsI wanted a book that helped me build strength and definition in my neck, and helped me do this safely. This is the book I found, and it's good. It's somewhat short (approx. 56 pages), and that took me aback before I cracked it open, but ultimately the book had everything I wanted, so what more was there to print? What the book has going for it is this: There are specific routines for "ballistic" performance (i.e., for martial artists, wrestlers, boxers, etc.), athletic performance/strength (i.e., for martial artists, football players, etc.), and for "mass" (i.e., bodybuilders). There are excellent illustrations showing various excercises for all the different neck and trap muscle types (i.e., neck flexors, lateral benders, extensors, rotators, and trap elevators and adductors), and routines outlined that are well laid out and easy to follow. I was also impressed with the information on safety, because as you know, your neck is an easily damaged body part, and you don't want to excercise it without fundamental safety knowledge. Overall, an impressive presentation of very useful information. Worth it...and no wasted paper.

Listen health for life is a company that went out of buiness years ago. But they write the best books but they are expensive. They are worth the price. They make you build muscle in the least amount of time. This again is a great book buy it.

Strategies for the C-Section Mom: A Complete Fitness, Nutrition, and Lifestyle GuideThere are SO MANY negative & scary c-section books out there, but this one is trying to focus on how to make the most of it and recover well. It is especially helpful for those who had a c-section, may have tried a vbac but it didn't work out, and are most likely going to have future c-sections. I have had 3 c-sections and am about to have a 4th, and found this book true to what my experience has been. This book gives the details that you need to know in order to make informed choices without being overly negative, nor sugar-coating things either. I was very impressed to read about the 7 suture vs. 3 suture methods that surgeons use, and how much better the 7 suture method is for a quicker recovery, less risk of internal bleeding, and (after talking to my own doctor) finding out that it also increases your chances of a successful vbac in that the muscles heal stronger with the 7-suture method. This book has the attitude that "if c-sections are the deck of cards that you've been dealt, here is how do deal with it to optimize healing and recover well." There are exercise plans for months out after the actual surgery, strategies for diet and managing stress, in order to maximize healing.

I highly recommend this book for the c-section mom.

I'm still reading this book! I wish I read this before my first c section. Good to know more on what's going to happen during and after your c section.

This book has a lot of good information and I really like the part that includes the diet and how to keep a healthy life style. However I was unable to implement the plan as stated in the book. I tried to follow it and get started gently, I even waited a few extra days to start, but I would get a lot of bleeding and pain the next day.

I consider myself a fit person, ran a 5K right before getting pregnant, but I was in bed rest during my pregnancy and that might have influenced my ability to exercise. I really wanted to have it work for me, but it didn't. I am almost 5 months post-partum and walking a lot. My belly is going down and I do not have the infamous "C-section pouch".

Can't really say I found much motivation from this book. It was sort of an overview of female runners and their careers, not feedback from them as to what goes on in their hearts and minds to make them excel and succeed. It's probably worth a quick read for most, but I wouldn't expect a life-changing work to get you running or help you to new heights if you already do. Actual training tactics weren't covered much either.

From the rave reviews of others, I expected this book to be incredibly inspiring... and it fell short of the mark. While some of the stories were pretty interesting, none of them were particularly inspiring, and the fact that the entire book was written in mostly third person detracted from the experience. I expected first-person essays from women writers, or at least interviews (since the preface alluded to that) but it read like mini-biographies about the runners, not really getting into personal, open (and thus moving) detail. Sosienski's writing also leaves something to be desired. I was more inspired reading The Complete Book of Running for Women, which isn't even really a book written just to inspire, as this one seemed to have been.

Finally a professional approach to a chronic world-wide issue! Well, I was disappointed. Tons of 'testimonies,' tons of support but alas no advice. Nothing most daughters-in-law don't already know anyway.

For example, one of the main reasons I bought the book was because it touched on unsupportive husbands. However, what does it say about unsupportive husbands? That they should support their wives. That's it, period amen. No advice for those whose husbands refuse. No alternative suggestions.

I'll tell you what, I know exactly the same thing I knew before I purchased the book. If you're a professional and can offer sound advice and suggestions, please do us a favor and write a book or something. You'll hit the jackpot...gauranteed.

I'll admit I was skeptical when I started this book. NOTHING could help me with my mother-in-law problems! Well, this book really did! Other's stories were a comfort and helped illustrate the various pitfalls in the mother-in-law/daughter-in-law relationship. The questionaires at the end of each chapter helped me (and my husband) sort out our feelings and pinpoint exactly what was causing the friction. These conversations are so easy to avoid, but the advice in this book helped me prepare for and be comfortable with talking things out. It also helped me deal with problems that have no easy fix. I would recommend it to anyone who has Mother-in-law trouble and I'd buy it for all newlyweds--before the problems start!

I'm a newlywed and currently have my "monster-in-law" living with us. Before she moved in, we were the best of friends but things drastically changed and I can't even manage to be in the same room as her! I'm desperatly seeking some kind of advice and there are no books out there that relate to my situation. I'm only 24 years old and have no kids, so it seems there aren't any people out there that can relate or there just isn't anyone who has written about it yet. This book is the closest I can get. Although it is a great read and has wonderful advice, about 80% of the information I can't relate to. I highly recommend this book but it's not for me.

This book is exactly what it says, a busy persons guide to reflexology. Though it does explain (with amazing photos) how to perform a reflexology session on the feet, the emphasis is on self treatment of the hands. A quick flip through the book will show you what reflexes to work for mentrual cramps, motion sickness, fatigue, headaches, sinusitus, indigestion...the list goes on. It even has helpful hints for what essential oils would be helpful for different ailments. This is a fabulous book for self treatment in between regular reflexology sessions and could potentially make your need for professional treatments less frequent.

After only two days of doing the hand massage I noticed a dramatic difference in the appearance of my hands. They looked younger! I am a singer and I have noticed that my breathing seems to be more relaxed and better coordinated while I am singing. I have not been able to do much about the foot massage so I can not comment about that but I do like the hand massage, I've been doing it for about a month now.

Fitness IllustratedYou know what I like about this book? Everything is BIG. Now before you think it's like a kindergarten book, let me say that it isn't. There's tons of information here--personal stories, training plans, nutrition, physiology, to name a few topics--all presented so you want to read it. Open this book to any page and the illustrations invite you with color, a font size that you can read easily (I think it's 14 point for body text), lots of photos of men and women of all ages (as a middle-age woman I'd like to say thank you very much) and all races. These are real people doing their exercise thing, not professional models. Even if you're an elite athlete, though, this book has something for you, too.

There are "Fit Facts", which are useful bites of information with practical value like avoiding muscle soreness, how to eat for your fitness level, how to train for your goals, etc. This is a great book and it's different from other books of its same subject because it's so broad. There's even cell biology in this book, which bolsters a lot of common knowledge with hard science. There are personal success stories, too, of normal people struggling with health and fitness, what they did, what changed, and how they are now. Very inspiring. And this book breaks it down into plans by the week or even the day to show you what to do one step at a time to meet your goals. It's like having a personal trainer right there in your hands whenever you need one.

This is an awesome book, and I've gotten away with something by receiving it in exchange for a review. Human Kinetics publishes Dance Anatomy and Stretching Anatomy as well, and this book uses the same great graphics. No matter what your fitness level or your sport of choice, there's something in this book for you. Anyone who cares about fitness, exercise, or health should have this book in their library. Appendix on energy expenditures by activity; bibliography, and index.

An excellent book! Easy to understand language and good illustrations covering all aspects of fitness. It talks about the benefits it terms of what it does for you body, aerobic and muscle fitness, nutrition, and weight control. Sample programs that help get you started on your own program are provide but with the proviso that you need to work out a program that suits you. It follows up with health issues, facts and fallacies and discussion on longevity. It is geared to the beginner and intermediate range. I'm at a point in my life where I have little time for reading...yet I still love to dig deeply into information on subjects I enjoy. It's rare that I find a book, especially a fitness book, that gives such great depth of knowledge in such an easy-to-read and understand, visually appealing fashion. This does. Unlike most books, it uses more visual tools than words (although there are both) to work.

I was going to post some photos of the book open because it's really different than most books and hard to get across in a review...however, I see that you are able to look at excerpts of the book's pages here under the book's posting. I suggest doing so to best understand the difference.

The book is over 300 pages of full-color, graphically designed, glossy pages. Every page is thoroughly, thoroughly (did I mention thoroughly?) well-thought out design-wise to show the reader not only through words, but the best pics possible exactly what they are conveying. And it also keeps one's interest better, much like flipping through a Men's Health or Women's Health magazine...they are full of learning, but enjoyable to read as well.

I consider myself somewhat of an expert on fitness...I teach weightloss classes, I strive to workout to various routines as much as possible, and I enjoy reading as much as I can on the subject...but, by golly, this taught me WAY more on both weight loss and training in almost a "crash course" as I've ever had.

And, consequently, I've lost 10 lbs this month (and I was small to begin with) simply by greater knowledge of training, endurance, fat burning, aerobic fitness training, intensity, duration...It may all be understood but not "stick" as it does when you have the visual examples, illustrations, pictures and diagrams that make it stay wtih you and be so well understood. They even use examples of people training...pictures, stories, drawings of the changes and go in depth into workout routines and how to do them correctly and safely. While I get that training in DVDs, they REALLY go in depth into getting the most from it by doing it right. But that's at the end of the book...before you ever get there I guarantee you you'll be pushing yourself harder than you ever have before knowing why you should, knowing the difference between aerobic and cardio, knowing what will really change your body and health and mind and energy.

New to fitness? Expert? It supports in depth learning for both. If you are new to it, you'll go in doing it right, better and faster. If you think you know it all I guarantee you you'll learn more and do it better...at least I did.

Yes, it's a raving review and no, I have no tie to this publisher or authoer...but it impressed me greatly. At a time where I am pushing aside all my books, I read this cover to cover and it changed many things I do and, in turn, it changed my body and muscle tone. For that, I can't help but be a raving fan.

Negatives? I try to leave negatives in all my reviews even on products I love in order to give a full and complete picture...I have none. If I had done the book myself, I wouldn't have changed it...especially for a visual learner like myself, it was so very easy to understand.

As the title suggests, this over-sized paperback is a colorful fitness guide filled with both photographs and illustrations highlighting the text. In fact, the vibrant style in which the book is written is reminiscent of magazine articles--i.e., all of the information is broken down into brief, manageable chunks, with much of the content presented via charts, graphs, and other easily-accessed formats.

Author Brian Sharkey begins with the basic questions of what are the benefits of being physically active and how much physical activity is needed. From there, Sharkey goes on the address the various components of a fitness program in detail, beginning with aerobic fitness. Bright, clear graphics simplify the science behind aerobic fitness training; Sharkey also provides charts to keep track of factors such as daily activity index, BMI, rate of perceived exertion, and more. Using all of the above elements plus a number of personal vignettes, Sharkey helps the reader to put together an individualized aerobic training program. Sharkey takes a similar approach to muscular fitness training, from providing readers with self-tests to customizing a muscular program which includes both stretching and core work.

The book includes a chapter on Nutrition and Weight Control (although little is said on the latter). Here Sharkey reviews the basic structures of the human diet, including protein, carbohydrates, and fats, as well as covers topics such as the glycemic index, portion sizes, antioxidants, and vitamins/minerals. The final few chapters provide additional tips on dealing with common problems that can arise (e.g., muscle soreness, cramps), separating exercise facts from fiction, and staying active throughout one's life span. Finally, there is an Appendix which estimates the number of calories burned during various activities, even things like shopping, carrying small children, and moving furniture.

Overall, I found this to be a user-friendly, easy-to-read book filled with basic fitness information. However, as someone who already works out daily and is quite knowledgeable about health and exercise, this guide did not offer me anything new. Therefore, I would limit my recommendation of FITNESS ILLUSTRATED to those who are exercise novices and/or who are looking for a comprehensive manual of simple information all in one place.

It is a truly a gift to know you are not alone.

Although informative, this book comes from a very negative place. While some men do participate in affairs during their midlife crisis, there are some who don't, as well as those who come to their senses and want to work on their marriages. For those searching for hope, handling the issue with realistic expectations and integrity, I would suugest Jim and Sally Conway's books, "Men in Midlife Crisis" and "Your Husbands Midlife Crisis."

However, the website that is suggested in the book is worth the purchase price many times over.

This book has many sad stories and unfortunately I feel that most people do not locate such books until the crisis has overwhelmed them. How is it that I, a well-read person, knew so very little about mid-life crisis? This topic isn't discussed sufficiently in our culture as far as I can tell. Finding good books is also difficult.

I ranked this as four stars simply because the beginning has typos and plugs the Midlife Wives Club website repeatedly. With some trouble, I was able to access their site but it was so depressing I didn't return. Sharing one's anguish is sometimes helpful, yet, I was more interested in the psychological motivations triggering the crisis affecting my relationship. In my opinion this book did not actually provide that type of information.

What this book does tell you is that you are not alone. You are bound to read the stories of others that are far worse than your own situation and that may give you some encouragement.

If you are considering this book, I wish you all the very best. I would recommend, besides this book, Gail Sheehy's "Understanding Men's Passages" which explains what typically is happening during a man's mid-life crisis with compassion. "What Could He Be Thinking" by Michael Gurian is excellent in describing the male and female brains and hormones; it sheds light on why we think and feel differently, thereby closing that "imaginary gap" that seems to crop up during the crisis. (It was always there because we are simply very different.) Also, "Why Can't You Read My Mind" (a terrible title) by Jeffrey Bernstein was very helpful. It helped me understand the toxic thoughts that I was having (due to feeling emotional pain) and helped me recapture the positive attitude and emotions I had prior to our crisis. Last, I recommend a very heavy read (with a too tiny font), "Love Online Emotions on the Internet" by Aaron Ben-Ze'ev. This is a real study of love, sex and relationships in cyberspace and the emotions behind it all. The author does an excellent job of presenting his information without bias or judgment, but it is very intellectual and a rather difficult read for the average person.

If you're looking for a beauty recipe book with tons of really great natural ingredients, this probably isn't it. With recommendations to put petroleum jelly in and on things, as well as chapstick, "your favorite eye cream," Cheerios, and the initial recipe, which includes liquid soap for your face, this book doesn't really try to be truly natural or organic.

That said, it is chock full of incredibly easy (often oneor two-ingredient) recipes that nearly anyone can put into action immediately. It reads like a tabloid sidebar, so it's definitely not heavy or too in-depth.

Who this book is for: Anyone who's never made their own beauty products but is slightly curious. Also, any desire for in-depth information will lead to disappointment here. This book is for you if you just want a fun little compilation of elementary ideas to flip through every once in a while when you're in the mood.

It would have been so very helpful if the publishers would have made sure there was a comprehensive index (that listed by either need or ingredient) instead of just a total repeat of the table of contents for an index. I still don't understand that part. :)

All in all, this book makes a concentrated effort to be easy, silly, and on par with magazines like Cosmo or Glamour. And it succeeds.

I recently purchased this book by Gary Barg. It is a terrific source for all caregivers and has every aspect that needs to be addressed in it. It takes you through every part of caregiving, from how to take care of yourself to attending to legal matters promptly. There is a list of ideas to help make your patient safe in his/her surroundings. This is valuable tool for every caregiver. It is superbly written and easy to read. It has been placed in our Parkinson's Library for our members to read.

Yoga: The Iyengar Way

Yoga:  The Iyengar Way"Yoga: the Iyengar Way" suceeds where other yoga books fail because of its superior pictures, which give extreme detail to all of the asanas (poses). It's always better to get guidance from a good teacher, but for home practice, this is one of the best books out there and is a great supplement to group practice. As its title implies, Iyengar yoga is taught in the book, and thus the use of props and alternative poses allows for those of different levels of experience to do as much of the asana as they can.

In short, if you're going to own one yoga book, make this the one - its pictures are MUCH better than either "Yoga for Dummies" or the "Complete Idiot's Guide to Yoga." In fact, if there's a yoga book with better photography and presentation, I haven't seen it.

This book is great for anyone who is interested in learning yoga. I have been doing yoga for a couple of years now, and this was the first yoga book that I bought. The book is well illustrated and contains more poses than any other yoga book that I have seen. Each illustration shows the correct form for each pose and also gives modifications for those who are not quite as flexible as the people in the illustrations. The book also contains a section with over 60 different yoga routines from begining levels to advanced, so you don't have to try to plan out which poses to do in what order. For those of you who are more interested in a "Power Yoga" routine, I have also found that adding a sun salutation as a transition between the standing poses in the routines adds a little more spice to the practice.

Such is the celebrity and influence of B.K.S. Iyengar as a teacher of yoga that a book with his name in the title virtually guarantees publishing success.

This book is a fine example of the phenomenon. It is an attractive, coffee table type yoga book for the nineties written by students of Iyengar. Perhaps the most important feature is the beautiful (and non glamorous) photos that illustrate the asanas with an almost mystic power. There's some irony here because it was the photos of Iyengar himself demonstrating asana (over six hundred of them) that more than anything catapulted him to fame some years ago with his now classic Light on Yoga, which I highly recommend as an extension of this book.

Obviously this is a different sort of book, aimed at beginners, but with some depth. It is more generic in a sense as it delves only lightly into the ideas underlying yoga while concentrating on the practical. Indeed its philosophic stance is succinct, and perhaps that is best for an approach focused on the physical health aspects of yoga. One weakness is that it is a little short on pranayama, and consequently on meditation.

Iyengar does contribute a foreword, however, and his spirit is apparent throughout. Overall this is excellent of its type, reminding me of something by Richard Hittleman from some years ago.

This is a wonderful book based on the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar. The poses are explained in an easy-to-understand way, with large, color pictures. Highly recommended, especially for beginners who may be intimidated by Mr. Iyengar's more comprehensive book "Light On Yoga."

This book provides excellent information on a wide variety of yoga poses, or asanas. Each asana is clearly illustrated and accompanied by step-by-step instructions on how to complete the pose; the information provided is detailed and straight-forward. The asasas are broken up into groups--standing poses, seated poses, etc.--and each individual pose is clearly labelled for level of difficulty, from one star (beginners) to four stars (advanced). At the end of the book, suggestions for various yoga practices are provided based on the the four levels of difficulty.

Although the information contained in this book is exemplary, there are several reasons why I do not feel it would be appropriate for beginners. First of all, I found the tone to be somewhat snobbish at times, such as when it suggested that if you have difficulties in a pose, you might need to go to a yoga teacher for "correction." Secondly, I have been practicing yoga for two years, and many of the poses labeled as either appropriate for "beginners" or "general practice" are still quite challenging to me. Third, throughout the book, poses are referred to by their traditional Indian names rather than the common names which are used today--ie, Tadasena rather than Mountain Pose. This is not a problem when you're looking at the actual pose, but the practices at the end of the book refer to the Indian name only and without photographs, which necessitates flipping back and forth through the book in order to attempt a practice. Finally, although modifications are suggested for each pose, many of these are not illustrated, which would make it difficult for beginners to follow along.

I think this book would probably be most appropriate for intermediates looking to further their practice. For beginners, I would recommend Rodney Yee's "Yoga: The Poetry of the Body" as an alternate yoga book, or Patrica Walden's video "Yoga Practice for Beginners," which also closely follows the Iyengar method.
