The Ultimate Weight Solution for Teens

The Ultimate Weight Solution for TeensWow. I got this book in December and in the last month I have lost 15 lbs. This book has helped a lot. I could feel the difference right when I started to read the book. Before I was depressed and hated my body and now I am going strong. I was 295 lbs at 15 and now I am 280 lbs at the age of 16 (my birthday was last week). I tried Dr. Phil's book but it wasn't working and now that Jay came out with this book, I am amzaed and it makes much more sense. I just want to say buy the book, it really does help.

This book is great is you are overweight. It challenges the way the think about food and helps you realize your cues (things that make you overeat). This book also addresses eating disorders like bulimia and anexoria. Althought a chapter is dedicated to eating disorders, I wouldn't recommend people with eating disorders to buy it. It stresses weight loss, but not weight gain. This book also teaches you how to make goals and how to follow through with them. I loved this book! Buy it!

Although I think that all of the keys are very significant and help you in different ways, my favorite is Key 4: Mastery Over Food and Impulse Eating. This one held the most significance for meas an emotional eater.

This chapter explains the "quick fix"or "immediate payoff" you experience when you eat and eat and eat, or you go on fad diets, or you starve yourself. they give you immediate control and satisfaction about yourselfthey are your reward to yourself. So why stop when what you are doing is making you happy on some level. It goes on to show you how negative thoughts about what you look like and about who you are inside are instigating your need to "reward" yourself in these negative ways. You have to change those negative images of yourself and begin to see the ultimate negative that could be turned into a positive by turning around your reward system. Food (or lack) is not a healthy reward, but going out with friends, driving around with your windows rolled down and the music blaring, or even allowing yourself an hour of freetime every day to do something fun are all healthy rewards that you can do easily.

I really thought this one was the one that spoke the most to the way I live. This book has keys that will help everyone I think.

Prior to reading this book, I had read Dr. Phil's adult counterpart. As an 18-year-old reader, however, I often felt that the book wasn't wholly appropriate for me as it referred to having responsibilities such as a career, kids, bills, etc. It also would include phrases like, "I want the body I had when I was in highschool!" This is obviously not relevant to someone that is still a teenaged student. At the time, I wasn't aware that Jay's book existed, but as soon as I saw it, I decided that I had to buy it.

Although this book is definitely more appropriate for a teenager, I think it is certainly written for a younger teen. Upon first starting the book, I was annoyed by the colloquial tone it used to establish a, "Hey, I'm young too!" type deal. He started the book with a line like, "What's up?" and uses words and phrases like "crap," "bs," "stuff," etc. He also frequently interjects anecdotes about his friends, family, and life experiences, and repeatedly talks about his involvement in school as a law student. Although I do think it's admirable that he is trying to establish a connection with his reader, it is a little over-done.

Aside from this being written for a younger person, it seems also to focus on severely depressed people with low self-esteem. For me, as someone who has never been picked on, has never had an issue with low self-esteem, and has no means to relate to the quotes in the book like, "I hate myself!!!," I found most of these parts boring. There is also an entire chapter devoted to those suffering from anorexia and bulimia that I completely skipped over.

You definitely get over it fast though, and this book was somewhat amusing and as easy read (written on probably a sixth grade level). I was able to read it in two days and found it difficult to put down. My above comments were not at all to criticize the author or discourage someone from reading this, but I would advise an older teenager to perhaps look into other options or even consider reading Dr. Phil's book and deal with the irrelevant parts.

The bottom line, though, is that this book is definitely helpful to anyone of any age. I personally liked the suggestions of ways to distract myself when I want to snack (I now will take a shower, go for a walk, or paint my nails). The nutritional plan is well-organized and easy to follow, and I actually like this chapter more than the one in Dr. Phil's book. There are certain "fluff" keys I think are used only to make the book longer, but the ones that help really do get the job done. I wish the best of luck to anyone embarking upon a weight loss journey; this book will definitely give you the push you need!

The Ultimate Fitness Boxing & Kickboxing Workout

The Ultimate Fitness Boxing & Kickboxing WorkoutDon't try to defend yourself using this book. You will get creamed. This book is strictly for fitness kickboxing which is okay. Don't use this book to create your own style unless it is a fitness kickboxing style. I don't think that many of these exercises translate well to a competition class. These exercises are best left in the aerobics room for the most part.

I am a kickboxing instructor, teaching a class on heavy bags and working on developing a style of my own. I have found O'Donnell's book to be an invaluable source of information to me. His clear, concise descriptions of stances and punching and kicking techniques cover all the basics. I'm always looking for creative kickboxing combinations, and he has a number of them in the book. In addition, his section in the back on Resistance Training Exercises has helped me tremendously in creating new ways to challenge the people I'm instructing. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in teaching a challenging kickboxing class either cardio or contact style.

This text is best suited for people that don't intend to exercise but want to look like they're interested in fitness and reason that by spending money on this book, they've done a great service to their overall health. After eagerly ripping open the packing (that once open negates a return) I feel like I just took a class from the "Rex Kwon Do" Cage Fighting School on Napoleon Dynamite. I was looking for instructional descriptions of the techniques I use in my classes to improve form and prevent injuries. The "boxing/kickboxing" part of the book doesn't start until page 51 and ends on page 84. Unfortunately it drones on for another 61 pages of nothing leaving us the consumers with 23% of what we paid for. Save your money, watch some Billy Blanks DVDs and have fun out there.

The Educated Child: A Parents Guide From Preschool Through Eighth Grade

The Educated Child: A Parents Guide From Preschool Through Eighth GradeAs a mother of three -one in public school, one in private and one home-schooled -I am deeply concerned about my children's education. I've lost count of the number of books I've read in the past 16 years on educating children. Some books were worth my time, many were not. Mr. Bennett's book is standing tall at the top of my list of "best reads". I'm sure we all have horror stories coming out of our kids' education (i.e., the huge amount of wasted time in the classroom, the lack of control in the class, the political correctness of revisionist history), but this book really can help. Mr. Bennett begins by explaining the importance of a solid education that engages a child's imagination by first making sure that child can read well. He builds on that by reminding parents that the main responsibility for educating our kids rests on our shoulders, not the school's. The book goes into detail about more than the Three R's, but covers those subjects extremely well, also. He reminds us that as parents it's up to us to speak up and go to bat for our kids throughout their education thus insuring they get the help they need. Throughout the book are checklists, questions to ask your child's teachers, book lists for you to insure that your child reads what is truly worthy of his time, and tips for incorporating the arts into your child's life. This book is like having a one-on-one conversation with a great educator who will give you the confidence you need to take control of your child's education. Help your child succeed by reading this book and then putting it into practice!

Bennett, Finn & Cribb provide for all parents what parents of special needs children have had for a long time an individualized education plan, a guide for what their children need to learn and a yardstick to measure the school's performance. Since my children are in 3rd and 5th grade, I immediately went to those sections to see how we were doing in our tiny four school district, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that we do well here, but could do better. I found their treatment of issues such as learning disabilty, ADHD and giftedness to be even handed and practical. By using this text as a guide parents (and hopefully school boards and principals) will be less inclined to jump on the latest educational bandwagon, and will instead stay focused on what needs to be done. The chapter on "Temptation and Troubles", dealing with the influences of TV, internet and sexual education is excellent, and the advice here will certainly be distributed in my practice as a child Psychologist. This is a must buy book for any parent who cares about what their children learn during these critical years.

This is such a fabulous book. I have four children (ages 3-9) and I have found more valuable information, guidance, and great ideas in this book than in all the other education related books I have read -combined. I particularly liked the grade specific study topics (core curriculum), reading lists, helpful tips to improve reading and other ways to help your child succeed in school, questions to ask the teacher, info. on gifted and special needs children, and kindergarten readiness list. Even though I consider myself somewhat experienced in the first three to four years of school (due to the volume of children I have), I found that this book provided me with new insight and reinforced my desire to help my children develop a love for learning. I know I will use this as a reference for many years to come. My only regret is that I did not have this book when my oldest child started preschool! Well worth the price!

This book looks like a college textbook, but is so filled with practical, down to earth common sense that I simply couldn't put it down. I am a teacher and a parent, and am highly recommending it to every person I come in contact with. It outlines what each grade level's expectations should be, and how to spot good education, spotty education and poor education. This man is a breath of fresh air to the education world. I wish I could take all of this information and place it in each parent's head.

One thing I particularly admire about Dr. Bennett's writing is that it is easy to read and reference. He speaks plainly and simply while making huge statements (ex. "There is right and wrong and it is our job to teach children to choose right"--what a concept lacking in our schools!)

Another thing I admire about this book is that it is not politically motivated. He does have some opinions in the last chapter of this book, but over all, he points out that we are to raise and teach moral, virtuous children that sometimes "make their brain sweat" while working out problems. (My daughter really likes to tell me her brain is sweating, so she must be doing a great job).

Another thing I admire about this book is that it is his feeling that if children were taught pride in themselves as Americans, we would see children turning away from drugs, because to support drug dealers is to support enemies of the United States.

If you have a child in your family or are a teacher or student teacher, I cannot rate this book high enough. If it were out in paperback I would personally purchase it for each of my parents in my class.

This is a wonderful book, a must read for parents with children of any school age. Better yet, buy it before they start school so you'll know what to look for. It's probably the most useful book you can buy as a parent. Your children will benefit from what you learn as well. Don't send your children to school until you read this book!

First Aid/CPR/AED for Schools And the Community

First Aid/CPR/AED for Schools And the CommunityI use this book to prepare for teaching CPR/first aid courses through for the Red Cross. I like how it is organized. It is straightforward, up to date and includes useful graphics and charts. It begins with the most life threatening conditions, (airway blockage, breathing emergencies etc.) and moves on to the less life threatening conditions. At the back of the book, one can find some specific chapters on topics such as asthma and allergic reactions.

There are also some useful sections in this book about prevention of emergencies. I think everybody should be aware of this material. I particularly found ideas for preventing poisoning in children to be useful.

The focus of the book is on keeping a person alive and minimizing shock until more advanced medical help is available. If you are looking for information on wilderness survival, in situations where medical help is not likely to be nearby, you should refer to this book, but you will need to do additional research.

While this book is great for review, it is not the most current offering from the Red Cross. The book is dated March of 2006. The Red Cross updated the techniques and materials in 2011. If you are purchasing this book to bring to your Course, please be advised that this is not the current version and therefore, not up to date on things such as the CPR technique.

As an instructor, I would not accept this book from a student. Make sure you are using the 2011 version.

Clear Skin: Organic Action Plan for Acne

Clear Skin: Organic Action Plan for AcneYou won't regret getting this book!

Clear Skin: Organic Guide for Acne is very well-organized, easy to read, and wonderfully educational. It doesn't aim to convert you into organic junkie, this "sandals-and-granola" type which I personally respect but hardly relate to. Organic here, in my opinion, means gentle, natural approach to improving our oh-so-problem skin from inside out.

The information Gabriel presents includes the most recent research. She discusses the merits and myths of traditional acne treatments and offers organic and all natural skin care products that are suitable for many skin types.

I got this book when I read two other books (Acne Cure and Unblemished!) on the subject, before I went to a dermatologist who suggested she should put me on Accutane. By the time I was formally educated, I had already heard everything from other books, and was also able to identify some dated traditional information. There's nothing old "chocolate won't give you acne" in this book! Everything is up to date and very unpretentiously explained. She really helped me understand why there isn't a consensus of opinion on the "best" cure for acne, why benzoyl peroxide literally ruined my skin and why many chemical ingredients in skin care products I use are bad if you have acne. Most importantly this book contains comprehensive step-by-step routines for each and every skin type, and you can easily mix and match them because they are all gentle and safe. Best thing, Gabriel doesn't sell anything and she's not Proactive or any other beauty brand salesperson.

If you are in the "Your skin, your science experiment" camp, she tells you several easy things so you can learn more about your own skin processes and various regimens (i.e., Acne Facial) you can try to control and fine tune your own skin care routine.

I have tried everything, including years of prescription treatments that made my skin peel, crack, and burn. I used Accutane, twice, with little improvement to my acne at all. I have had moderate to severe acne for years, and finally, at the age of 18, its disappearing thanks to this book. I do not follow their suggested diet, but i do now eat mostly low GI foods. I used her suggestions incrementally to see how each one affected my skin, and the diet alone caused a huge improvement. the recipes as well as her recommendations for products all work great. It is extremely nice to not only be off all of my prescriptions, but to have even better skin than before. after a little less than a month, all i have left are a one or two small pimples and some acne spots and scars that are fading. i would recommend this book to anyone, especially those who do not want to use products with parabans or harsh chemicals

I bought this book along Julie Gabriel's recent book, The Green Beauty Guide, and I must admit: this one is truly amazing and deserves much more attention! As a former acne sufferer, Julie is very focused on natural treatment strategies for acne-prone skin.

What's really great, she offers detailed skincare plans for each group of people who may have acne: teenagers, adult women, men, people with dark and mature skin, even pregnant women!

I enjoyed the homemade recipes, too. I used the book to custom-make my own acne regimen, and I already see the improvement, only after a week of sticking to it.

Gabriel has lots of good information, much of it new to me (even though I'm a rabid consumer of beauty/nutrition news). However, she is not a native English speaker and whoever was supposed to edit/proof her book did a terrible, terrible job. I found the typos and strange sentence structures distracting. It's not a problem on every page, though.
