Scrawny to Brawny: The Complete Guide to Building Muscle the Natural Way

Scrawny to Brawny: The Complete Guide to Building Muscle the Natural WayMany of the reviews on here seem to be from people who are just starting or who gave up on Scrawny to Brawny. I went in determined to do the whole four month program and am proud that I finished it up through the last day.

MONTH ONE

Phase I is the Corrective Phase and, I feel, the best part of the whole book. A series of precise tests show you your weak points and then you spend 2 to 6 weeks correcting them. This is especially important for skinny guys who can seriously hurt themselves if they start squatting loaded barbells without the underlying tissue support. The stretches and small lifts are HARD work and I really felt my ligaments and support muscles getting stronger. I had a "bum knee" which tended to feel weak or have pangs before I started this program and since I finished it, that never happens. Great workouts.

The food portion was far less successful. Similar to others who have mentioned this, I could not humanly consume the amount of calories they wanted each day. On the very first day, I found myself laying on the sofa groaning in gut pain at 9pm because I was so engorged. And I was still supposed to eat another meal before bed. I cut back just enough to make my consumption actually possible without vomiting from then on, but my body fat still soared in this first month. I continued to monitor food amounts each month as directed by their Decision Making Matrix, but it was shocking to start off the program with the first serious paunch I'd ever carried.

MONTH TWO AND A HALF

It was in this month that I strained my back doing one of the lifts and had to take a couple weeks off and start using a lifting belt to continue. Keep in mind that most lifts are illustrated with a single photo and the description of how to execute them assumes some familiarity with the equipment and proper form. I'd taken a weight training class in college and used dumbbells a lot before but strained my lower back lifting a barbell above my head and arching too much. If you're going to sink the significant amount of money that's called for (see below) into this program, you might also plan on a once-a-month meeting with a personal trainer just to assure you're doing everything properly, unless you're versed on full body barbell lifts.

Also, they wanted me to do several chin-ups at a time during my workouts and I could barely do one. There was no guidance on what to do if you're not ready for an exercise yet. Do fewer? Do them halfway? Who knows?

On the plus side, people started making comments about how much bigger I was this month. One co-worker even flattered me that I was getting "huge".

MONTH THREE

This month focuses on building strength for the last big push of muscle enlargement. Good workouts with noticeable growth on my legs and butt.

MONTH FOUR

This was the weakest part of the program. Workouts moved up to four a week to increase growth and left me feeling tired most of the time, even on days off. I'd start workouts not feeling 100% because I was still tired from my last workout. Muscle growth kind of stalled as a consequence, even though I really put everything I had into it and was still eating enough to keep my body fat higher than average.

PLUSES

The general info presented here (less the excess calories) is solid. i learned a lot and appreciated the mix of technical info with practical tips. Although not a lot larger, my legs and butt are more shapely than ever beforeI don't have chicken legs for the first time. And the corrective phase was very effective in building a strong core.

MINUSES

I have a partner who is pretty independent, no pets nor kids, and I work half-time. Still, the shopping, preparation, storage, packing, unpacking, cooking, and washing up after the meals took almost all of my free time. Commute and changing time at a public gym would be added to that for those who don't work out at home. If you have a full-time job, a spouse who wants date nights, kids and a pet, you will find it very, very difficult to complete this program.

Between equipment and extra groceries, I probably spent a couple grand on this program, and that was getting super, lucky deals on used equipment via craigslist. At the end of the program, you're just left with the suggestion to sign up for their expensive online extension rather than any practical plan on how to convert what you've learned into a normal lifestyle.

The diet of almost all lean proteins got very monotonous after a while, even for someone who has spent much of his life in the food business and knows how to make simple food tasty. Before you even think of ordering this book, prepare and eat six meals tomorrow, all of them primarily consisting of lean protein (fat free yogurt, chicken breast, fish, turkey burger, 95% or more lean beef, egg whites...). Protein shakes do not countthose would be on top of your six meals if you had them. Then imagine doing that for four months straight, seven days a week.

Finally, the low amount of carbs in the diet really affected my energy level and mental quickness by month four. I just hadn't had the easily convertible energy of carbs for so long that I felt generally hazy and tired. After one day of going back to my normal eating patterns, I was surprised by a noticeable jump in my alertness, interest in intellectual pursuits, and energy for everyday activities.

RESULTS

My neck, thighs and calves are the same at the end of the program as they were at the beginning (although all did peak larger at different points along the way). My shoulders gained four inches, my chest gained two inches, my waist gained three inches, and my butt and arms both gained an inch. My body fat ended one percentage point higher than when I started.

This is my first review on Amazon, and the only reason I decided to write one on this product was because of how excellent it turned out to be, and because some of the negative reviews that I read might scare some people away from a geniunely useful book.

I've owned it for about two years now, but I've been working out for a lot longer than that for my high school and college athletic careers, with very little to show for it. S2B has dramatically changed the way that I work out-the frequency, the types of exercises, and the volume I incorporate in my workouts. On this program, I went from 6'2 170 pounds to 6'2 195 pounds in about a year on this program, and got vastly more strong. I now do reps with weight that I used to be unable to lift once.

I've seen a few reviews that claim that they have gotten very fat etc. from employing the nutritional advice advocated in the book. There are a number of reasons why this might have happened, but the authors explicitly say that it is an outcome-based nutritional process that you update every two weeks. If you are gaining too much fat--then stop and adjust the diet! Perhaps some of the authors of these comments are not lifters in the true ectomorphic, high-metabolism "hard-gainer" mold or they did not perform the workouts with the proper intensity. I know that if you use the nutrient partitioning/timing that Dr. Berardi recommends, and you eat a lot of nutritious food (aka load up on salads, very lean beef, chicken, fruit) and perform the workouts just as they appear on a consistent basis with hard effort, you will put on muscle and while it is impossible not to put on a little fat with it, in most cases it is barely noticable.

Even if you are not a prototypical ectomorphic hard-gainer, the advice offered in this book is great for building strength and size. The authors advocate a focus on compound lifts using free weights, without a lot of machines or smith machine work that might be good for the ego but aren't good for working the joints or the multiple stabilizing muscles throughout the body. All in all, a solid, informative, entertaining and easy to read book. I would highly recommend it, although the information can be slightly disorganized and the many interesting research references contained in the book are not cited. (There is a book called Njtrient Timing that describes the principles Dr. Berardi employs for sale on Amazon that is also a great book and sheds a little more light on this very interesting and useful subject). Hope this helps!

Absolutely fantastic! The frustration over being an ectomorph is something that only the truely skinny can understand. I had just healed after two sessions at the gym that took me a week to recover. During that time, I reevaluated my weightlifting; what was I doing wrong? I had eaten good foods and trained at least 3 time a week with only a little definition to show for it. Then, I heard about this book. I ordered it not expecting much but, boy, was I wrong. The information in this book specifically directs its focus towards us skinny guys. The emphasis is on compound lifts in the body of the training program but they also use the first four weeks to level out your muscle groups to prevent injury and so you look more balanced (this cured my weak back muscles!).

A nice thing too is that the book devotes half of itself to nutrition. Other books will only give you exercises and have you go on your way which always leads you to thinking what you're doing wrong. They list out how you should eat and when; let it be known that this portion is a major lifestyle change.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve their body. So what are you waiting for "skinny"? Get to work!

Oh, this email the author sent out.. offering to send something in exchange for a good review. Shady.

=====================

I want to start this email off by posting something marginally disturbing. Below

is a recent review of our Scrawny to Brawny at Amazon.com.

"I regret buying this book. It is mainly for someone who can survive on

supplements or soup. Most of the routines and guidelines are very hard to do and

you would look silly doing them anywhere people are present! I do no recomend

this book!"

Now, for any of you who actually read the book, you'd know that this reviewer is

likely on crack! Soup? Squats and bench presses are silly to do? Uhm, ok.

Heck, I wonder if this reviewer even read the book or has ever exercised in his

life.

But, I guess everyone is titled to his or her own opinion.

So what's the point of me sending this ONE review to you?

Well, the point is that ignorance, unfortunately, speaks its opinion loud and

often while reason often keeps quite and shakes its head. And not only do

ignorant opinions like this lower the collective intelligence quotient of

mankind, they prevent others from getting any better.

Think about it I've received thousands of emails from S2B readers telling me

how the S2B program changed their life. In fact, right now Im doing an interview

series with our S2B stars, individuals who put in the time, comittment, and

dedication necessary to reap outstanding results. So I know the program is one

of a kind. And I know that most of you reading this think so too.

But, when someone like you looks for info about the S2B book, the get to read our

friend's review above and may not pick up the book, even though they despirately

need it.

Sad.

So here's how I'd like to combat this, with your help, of course:

I'd like you to get on the web and make your rational opinion heard. Post

something positive about the book at amazon.com, amazon.ca, one of the many

message boards online, etc.

And when you do, send me the link to your post. For doing me this favor, I'd

like to send you something. I'm working on a new book called Precision Nutrition

and although it's not yet finished, I'd like to send you a chapter from the book.

The chapter is all about individualizing your nutritional plan based on your body

and your goals. I know you'll love it!

So, make your voice heard post something positive on the web, send the link to

me, and I'll send you that chapter.

And let me leave you with the words of Plato:

The price good men pay for indifference is to be ruled by evil men.

In that it's got all the fundamentals that you need to know hidden away in there, but like the real bible you have to flip back and forth all over the place and have a couple of study aids at hand to make it workable. If you're already au-fait with gym terminology and how to make a variety of meals from specified quantities of lean meats and vegs, then honestly this book is all you need.

As it is pitched at people who've been battling with their frame for a while, I guess this is understandable. But if you're new to this business and are looking for a walk-you-through-it guide then, although this is a good start, keep looking, (unless you want to get the coaching programme* too).

Verdict: Great content, hobbled by the editing. If this book was reworked, it'd be worth a 5.

The Home Chef’s Kitchen Medical Emergency Guide

The Home Chef’s Kitchen Medical Emergency GuideBoy, the cover says it all! Having spent enough time around restaurant kitchens, working along side an ice carver for banquets and special dinner affairs, and watching my friends cook food in their kitchens and grill on their barbecues, I can vouch for the usefulness of a book such as this and having it around. Beyond having a simple, handy, easy to read and reach home health self-reference guide in the unfortunate accident event for family, friends and special dinner guests, one of its virtues is in reading beforehand---hopefully, for prevention--to heighten the "weekend chef's" awareness of the types of things that could happen or just go wrong. Also, the book is funny, which doesn't hurt.

101 Glam Girl Ways to an Ultra Chic Lifestyle: A Cheeky Book with Tidbits of Advice for a Glamorous

101 Glam Girl Ways to an Ultra Chic Lifestyle: A Cheeky Book with Tidbits of Advice for a Glamorous LifestyleThe title 101 GLAM GIRL WAYS TO AN ULTRA CHIC LIFESTYLE caught my eye, and I opened it up. Dawn Del Russo's online boutique, BellaDawn.com, is cute, so I decided to give the book a chance.

The best part is the charming illustrations of Barbara Ann Scrrillo, the owner of Brushstrokes. They are all in color and all supercute. It makes the book fun to look through, which is useful when some of Del Russo's advice is repetitive or not that insightful.

Tip #34: Send flowers to yourself.

Tip #65: Fresh cut flowers.

Tip #23: Wear deodorant. (Flavor text: Do we even have to give an explanation for this one?)

The redundant and overly simple tips annoy me, because there are some helpful and inventive tips. Del Russo advocates short meditation, which I've always found helpful. (I'm less stressed, my mood is more balanced, and it's absolutely perfect before you go to sleep if you've been having trouble reaching la-la land.) She also points out where it is best to splurge diamond studs, a nice pair of pumps, a nice black dress, and a watch. Those few designer/expensive pieces can be picked out carefully, and make the rest of your wardrobe look classier. (Plus, as Del Russo advocates, a tailor can also work wonders.)

However, even the good advice seems to breezily presented. The flavor text beneath each illustration offers some insight, but I'm the kind of person who likes to keep asking, "Why?" until I get a really good explanation. I would've preferred a book with fewer tips and more prose illustrating how to integrate the tips into your life, especially if you do need your glam girl lifestyle to be affordable.

My final verdict? 101 GLAM GIRL WAYS TO AN ULTRA CHIC LIFESTYLE is cute and fun to flip through, but it probably won't make a difference to your lifestyle unless you're a total beauty neophyte. The advice is a bit too practical and simplistic.

From In Bed With Books

This little book on glam girl fashion is as indispensible as every woman's little black dress. The book is a palm-ful (at just over one hundred pages), and easily read in a few minutes. Each tip is carefully highlighted with colorful illustrations and fun sayings, which offer reminders on how to become glamorous.

I imagine that the author and illustrator have the idea to remind all women that easy glamour is well within everyone's reach. This is true on every level, although our stressful lives certainly don't help our cause to remaining beautiful, within our harried schedules. Although the tips offered in the book are deceptively simple, I did feel that they were all useful reminders on ways to enrich and refresh my spirit. To that end, the smallest positive effort can significantly increase and improve the value and quality of my otherwise impossibly busy life. And everyone can use a reminder that she is worth putting herself first, right?

This is a cute little book, and would make a great gift to give to a glam girl of any age.

In this publication, Del Russo (Fashion Merchandising and Design, Parsons School of Design, 2002; B.S., Business Management, Wagner College, 2001; contributing fashion writer for select online magazines), an up-and-coming fashion stylist and founding owner of a successful, storefront and online, clothing and accessory boutique Bella Dawn (), with the assistance of Scarrillo (Fashion Institute of Technology; Owner, Brushstrokes), a graphic designer from New York City with over twenty years experience, provides a pocket-sized, guide book for women, who may be searching for budget friendly glamour and quick, easy ways to go beyond their everyday fashion, beauty, and/or lifestyle routines. By means of 101 tips, each of which is boldly-presented and colorfully-illustrated on a separate page, the author sets forth practical and realistic advice that may have financial consequences. Covering clothing, jewelry, accessories, cosmetics, hair, personal hygiene, self-presentation, health, body, mind, work, home, travel, entertainment, and more, Del Russo focuses on outward and inward aspects of glamour, thereby broadening the scope of the subject and suggesting that there is more to the topic. For the author, glamour is more than skin deep. It goes beyond appearances and constitutes a mindset and way of life. While many of Del Russo's recommendations may relate partly to sociallyand culturally-accepted standards of decorum and fashion--ex. Tip #23 Wear deodorant ... (p. 31)--and others are not new but rather longstanding and true--ex. Tip #13 Find a little black, "`must-have"' dress ...(p. 21)--most if not all her "tidbits" are original, to the extent that they combine fashion, beauty, and/or lifestyle tips into unique statements. For example, on the subject of shoes, in Tip #42, Del Russo proclaims, "Slip into a pair of designer pumps. ... Every girl should own at least one pair, right?" Yes, true, probably every "girl" or woman should own a pair of pumps, a well-known, widely-disseminated fashion principle. Del Russo further implies by the wording of Tip #42 that if you can not afford to own more than one pair of pumps, than at least buy a designer brand. The author believes quality matters and it usually is an excellent indicator of beauty and style, although not the only factor. For all women, but particularly for younger, single women, who may be "home alone on a Friday night" and more able to "dress red carpet style" (Tip #69, p.77), without a husband and/or children around, this well-presented, nicely-illustrated, unique, delightful, easy-to-read book serves as a useful, fun, beauty guide. While it is not comprehensive, it may serve as a good, first start for many women, who may need a little fashion, beauty, and/or lifestyle help to move beyond the everyday. A great personal gift, it also belongs in some public libraries as a complimentary, fashion, beauty, and/or lifestyle resource as well as an enjoyable read. Recommended-C. A. Confessions of a Caregiver: When Alzheimer's Comes to Your Home

Confessions of a Caregiver: When Alzheimer's Comes to Your HomeI am the primary care giver for my mother-in-law who lives in our home. I downloaded this book to my Kindle because thinking I would could get encouragement from someone who has walked in my shoes. The author writes about his feelings and resentments and ways that he is dealing with his wife caring for her mother. While I don't doubt his honesty and that he writes from his heart, I don't consider him a caregiver. I think this book is better suited for the spouse of a primary caregiver, not for the actual care giver.

There are many aspecs of caring for someone with Alzheimers that you can't imagine unless you are in that person's shoes. It is a very lonely situation for the actual caregiver.

I could not finish this book because I would get so angry that he was complaining about things that his wife was dealing with and how they affected him. It just seemed to me that this book is a "Woe is Me" kind of book.

I do recommend it for anyone who is related to a caregiver...I am sure my husband can identify with this author, but I can't.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is caring for a elderly person at home or has the responsibility for someone in an assisted living facility. You will smile, you may cry, and you will be astonished that others are sharing your same emotions. Mr. Skillin has truly given a gift to caregivers.

Buy Confessions of a Caregiver: When Alzheimer's Comes to Your Home Now

After Alzheimer's struck his mother, sister, and mother-in-law, author and caregiver, Joseph Skillin writes in Confessions of a Caregiver, that he struggles with the "daily-ness" of the presence of Alzheimer's in his home.

He writes, "Anyone can rise to the need of taking care of a sick parent. But it takes courage, endurance, constancy, perseverance, and heroism to commit to daily care without any end in sight."

While he admires his wife's loving care for her mom in their home, he confesses his feelings of unease with the burden on his family.

IRRITATED BY THE LITTLE THINGS

Skillin finds he can't stop focusing on "the little things" that irritate him day after day. He admits it doesn't make sense to let these things bother him, but they do-such as when his mother-in-law turns up the volume on the television, doesn't push in her chair when leaving the table, or never shows appreciation with a "Thank you."

Yet, while his wife, Penny, serves as the primary caregiver for her mom, Skillin finds ways to help and ease Penny's burden by taking on a greater share of the household chores.

PRAYING

One of two unique qualities of Confessions is a prayer at the end of each chapter. These give us a deeper look into what matters to Skillin during his caregiving journey. At the end of the "How I Cope" chapter, Skillin begs God: Do not test my endurance. Give me a break.

GETTING AWAY FROM HOME

Skillin, who works outside the home as a marketing consultant, is thankful Penny allows him time away from home to cope with the burden. He advises caregivers to do the same in order to "reset your perspectives, rekindle your appreciations, and recharge your soul." He adds, "Step out of the house so you can step back in and step up to the challenges." This is great advice for all caregivers if even for five minutes.

WHAT I FEAR

The second unique quality of Confessions, among caregiving books, includes a chapter on "What I Fear." After seeing his mother, sister, and now mother-in-law live with Alzheimer's, he knowingly fears of being robbed of his being, of his "eventual lack of control," and of being "stuck in bed until someone comes and dresses" him. At the same time, he doesn't want to be a burden to his children who he believes have to live their own lives. He even outlines eight tips for them.

FINDING THE JOY

Despite the burdens of caregiving, Skillin does take time to find the joy with his mother-in-law. Whether it is laughing at the thought of a ninety-four year old woman walking down the street with an empty suitcase at three in the morning (she wanted to go home) or smiling at the thought of his mother-in-law sipping out of the empty envelop she insisted was her coffee cup.

WHAT MATTERS MORE

Skillin comes to the realization while witnessing one's dying that what matters less is success and competence and what matters more is significance and character.

He learns from his wife, Penny of the gifts of caregiving and why she sacrifices so much to lovingly tend to her mother. Among the reasons she gives is one that is important for all caregivers: To do the best we can so that after our loved ones are gone we have no regrets.

He wrote this book to help other caregivers and spouses of caregivers deal with the "emotional rollercoaster" of caregiving.

What Skillin accomplishes with Confessions of a Caregiver is a catharsis of sorts that gives caregivers the permission to feel negative feelings that come with the heroic burden of caregiving while stepping up to the caregiving role.

Highly recommend this book for all caregivers (not just those dealing with Alzheimer's), past, present and future. The emotions are not sugar coated, but real and honest. The prayers are a true blessing. A quick read, you'll want to keep it close when the cares of being a caregiver are overwhelming.

It's been five years since I helped with the care of my mother. The insight, honesty and compassion with which Mr. Skillen writes, allowed me to revisit the feelings I dealt with and put them in perspective.

Joe Skillin's "Confessions of a Caregiver" is a blessing to me. It comes at a difficult time, as my wife and I are faced with the caring for her sister, a 68 year-old retired school teacher, experiencing the onset of Alzheimer's disease. Living alone, her care has fallen to us and becomes more difficult with each day. Skillin's message, as he relates his experience with his mother-in-law and other family members, skillfully hits the mark on many levels and provides comfort in its sincerity.

One never knows or can plan for the overwhelming list of responsibilities, legal issues, stress and fatigue that accompany this degenerative disease as you watch a loved one move further away yet, paradoxically, need you more than ever. I highly recommend "Confessions of a Caregiver", as the author astutely describes the process and needs of the ill while drawing from his empathy for the caregiver as the burden spreads from the patient to those around them. This is a must read for all that need to understand how invasive Alzheimer's can be.

Smart Lotionmaking: The Simple Guide to Making Luxurious Lotions, or How to Make Lotion That's Bette

Smart Lotionmaking: The Simple Guide to Making Luxurious Lotions, or How to Make Lotion That's Better Than You Buy and Costs You LessThis is it! The Best Ever How To Lotion making book you will ever want and need! No more lumpy, heavy, oily "pretend" lotions from other books these recipes all work and are REAL lotions. Once again, Anne has prepared clear, concise, easy to follow instructions that are truly step by step for anyone to understand. There are no hidden mysteries, no contradictions, nothing confusing. I have made a few lotions from this book already, following Anne's instructions, and all my friends are begging for more! Anne also includes very important and essential information on keeping everything clean and sanitized to prevent any likelihood of contamination, a factor that many other sources 'skip' and put in the too-hard basket. She also includes lots of very helpful tips and has a 'frequently asked questions' section at the back. And even best of all, you can actually contact the author if you have any other questions. I cannot recommend this book highly enough!

Although I was one of the testers for this book, I had no intention of actually making lotion because I "knew" it was too difficult for me. Why make lotion when I could buy a base, add a litle fragrance and call it my own? Well, I flinched everytime a customer would ask if I had made the lotion that was being offered. Now I can say yes and accept the praises for the lotion I actually make. This book made me want to make lotion!!

As she has done with all of her How To books, Anne writes as if you are sitting across the kitchen table from her as she takes you through each aspect of lotion making. She has the innate ability to anticipate every question that might come up and the instructions and recipes are always very easy to follow. This is a must have book for all soap and lotion crafters.

To get to know Anne better, go to her home page at and see what else she has to offer. Her fiction is memorable. She is the consummate story teller. An all around talented writer.

I highly recommend this book for beginners and experienced lotion makers alike. All of Anne's how-to books (both for soap AND lotion) will pay for themselves over and over and are worth every penny and a whole lot more!

I have been making my own soaps and creams for years now but always like to see what's new. While the recipes in here are very good, there is nothing new if you are experienced at making creams and lotions. If you have never made lotion before, this would be THE book to get. My favorite one is out of print and I have not seen it sold anywhere.

This book is strictly for making body lotions. No creams or facial products. If you have ever gone to any lotion crafting websites then you will be familiar with all of the ingredients in here. If this is your first time making lotion, Anne describes everything that you will need and why.

That said, you will need a gram scale since they are more accurate and, while the ounces are also given in each recipe, using grams is actually easier. You'll also need to find some e-wax since all but one of the recipes use it. No substitutions are given. I like to use xanthan gum but it tends to make a sticky product. It also happens to be easier to find locally.

Other ingredients that you may need that recipes use are stearic acid, vitamin E, preservative, and conditioning emulsifier, which is also called BTMS. And then there are oils and butters, which should be easy to find. There are a couple of recipes that call for goat's milk and one that uses almond milk. Of course, you could substitute milk for the water in any of the recipes. I made a goat's milk lotion one time and it was incredibly thick. Be aware that adding milk will do that.

Getting lotion into bottles presents its own challenge, which Anne is up for. Follow her directions and you will be bottling lotion like a pro. I use wide-mouthed small jars but I don't sell my lotions and creams. Everybody in the house gets their own jar.
