The Complete Book of Massage

The Complete Book of MassageI found that this book has relatively good information, however, I found out most of this by myself. After reading through it once I already have most of the information memorized. This book is more the top layer of the muscle. I go to a choir college and a lot of the people here have deep knots in their shoulders and lower back. Trying to use this information does not help too much. Oh, don't get me wrong, there are several things in this book that I could use, although I might have to alter it a little. For someone that wants to go into massage therapy, I would suggest getting a few other books. I myself have purchased Art Riggs' Deep Tissue Massage book.

I would recommend this book for the people that just want to relax people for a short time. If however you would like to cause a deeper, longer lasting feeling of relaxation, purchase some other books. This book only provides the "icing on the cake" of massage.. I think. I sort of regret this buy, so think at least twice before buying.

This book is excellent and has every picture for every step and also shows you how to use oils, which types of strokes there are, and also talks a little about reflexology. It has all types of massage: Back, legs, arms, hands, shoulders, buttocks, stomach, and neck. Has massage for babies and pregnant women. Shows how to setup your own massage place and is excellent for beginners.

This book is for couples who want to give each other a sensual massage. First of all, try giving a full body massage sitting next to someone on a bed, your back and shoulders will hurt. If Maxwell-Hudson is so serious about massage, why doesn't she have them on a massage table, which is proper. This sounds like a book about foreplay or sensual massage, not therapeutic massage. Someone with therapeutic intentions or who wants to get out knots or kinks will not benefit from this book. Some of the positions photographed are sexually suggestive. There may be technical discussion in this book, but it is out of place. The featured bodies may be beautiful, but not draped properly. This is not for professionals and to title this work The Complete Book of Massage is misleading at best.

This is a somewhat clinical approach to what should be a really warm and personal subject. The author has a tendency to go on and on, burying us with minutia that we don't really need unless we are involved in massage professionally.

Offputting for the novice, hobyist or hedonist; might work better for the professional-level massage practitioner.

T.N.T.: Total Neck and Traps

T.N.T.: Total Neck and TrapsI wanted a book that helped me build strength and definition in my neck, and helped me do this safely. This is the book I found, and it's good. It's somewhat short (approx. 56 pages), and that took me aback before I cracked it open, but ultimately the book had everything I wanted, so what more was there to print? What the book has going for it is this: There are specific routines for "ballistic" performance (i.e., for martial artists, wrestlers, boxers, etc.), athletic performance/strength (i.e., for martial artists, football players, etc.), and for "mass" (i.e., bodybuilders). There are excellent illustrations showing various excercises for all the different neck and trap muscle types (i.e., neck flexors, lateral benders, extensors, rotators, and trap elevators and adductors), and routines outlined that are well laid out and easy to follow. I was also impressed with the information on safety, because as you know, your neck is an easily damaged body part, and you don't want to excercise it without fundamental safety knowledge. Overall, an impressive presentation of very useful information. Worth it...and no wasted paper.

Listen health for life is a company that went out of buiness years ago. But they write the best books but they are expensive. They are worth the price. They make you build muscle in the least amount of time. This again is a great book buy it.

Posture, get it straight!

Posture, get it straight! After using the exercises in this book for about a week, I noticed that I no longer felt nagging upper back tension. Then, inspired, I purchased Janice Novak's video (rubber bands come with it), and started using it about five times a week. The video has the same information, but it's easier for me to follow along with a video rather than flip through pages. The neat thing is that several friends have asked me, "Have you lost weight?" I haven't, but I look thinner and feel terrific. I've had rounded shoulders for 56 years, but my posture has improved enormously. This book should be a bestseller.

This is a great book. I would recommend it to everyone. I've been working with my trainer at the gym to help my posture, and this book really helped me to understand some of the underlying concepts of posture.

This book is written to women, and I am a man, but I thought that this was actually a very good idea. There are a couple of references to "men should do this instead," when they are needed, but I thought that focusing on one gender made the book very clear and very understandable.

Which reminds me of the coolest thing about this book, which is the illustrations. All of the illustrations are of the same woman. And this is very cool, because I was able to tell really quickly what good posture was and what was not. By focusing just on women, and by focusing just on one person giving examples of good posture and bad posture, it made the book very understandable.

Also, Janice Novak gives the meat of the book in the first ten pages, where she talks about her "One minute to better posture" exercise. This is a really cool exercise that will transform your life instantly. It's really cool, because the book starts out with a real bang and then the rest of the book supports that initial bang until the end.

The only improvement that I would suggest for the next edition is to have pictures of all of the exercises, and have two pictures for the two-step exercises. This would increase the size of the book by about twenty pages, but I think it would be worth it. I can be slow sometimes and pictures help me a lot.

This book is great for any type of poor posture. I never realized all the different ways you hold your body that cause you to have poor posture. Janice not only tells you to "stand up straight," she gives you exact instructions, from head to toe, of how to hold your body properly. She then gives a lot of excercises that strengthen specific muscle areas, helping your correct posture become more natural and easy to attain. I found after reading this book, that when I previously attempted to "sit up" or "stand up" straight, I was doing it wrong and actually looked just as bad as in my "naturally" poor posture. Now I know exactly what to do to look great.

I read a friend's copy while visiting her. Since I have suffered from neck pain (not severe, but real) for about 15 years, I figured I might as well give it a try. I found that results were immediate. I was also shocked by having to confront how bad my habitual posture was.

I have been doing the basic one-minute routine for about eight months now. My neck pain (and tension -I used to have two bands of muscle of almost wooden hardness running down the back "corners" of my neck) is reduced about 80-90%, and I continue to improve. I also look taller and slimmer, as promised (my parents both said to me, "you're so tall!" as if it were a new thing -but then I suppose it was). I would agree that you will look an inch or two taller and ten pounds slimmer. Maybe more. Now, since then I've also *gained* about ten pounds...but that's another story.

Zen and the Art of Cooking Beer-Can Chicken: The Definitive Guide: the Nation's Best Companion Guide

Zen and the Art of Cooking Beer-Can Chicken: The Definitive Guide: the Nation's Best Companion Guide for Cooking, Brining, and Injecting Beer-Can ChickenWhen this book calls itself "The Definitive Guide", it's not boasting! Easy-to-understand recipes for the best tasting beer can chicken EVER. Lots of recipes for desserts and stuff to go with your main dish of BEER CAN CHICKEN! There's even beer can TURKEY recipes! I have tried almost every recipe in the book with ease and no fail results! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I received my first copy of this cookbook when I bought my " Poultry Pal " vertical poultry cooker. The cooker and the the recipes in the book are excellent. I have purchased several more of each to share with family and friends. I'm working my way thru the book and haven't found a recipe my wife and I haven't liked yet. I'm sure there is one, but we haven't picked it yet. We really like the "Bavarian Kraut Bird" calling for "Hefenweizen" , a german sweet wheat beer as liquid base. The recipe recommends an aperitif of Schnapps, but we like Hard Apple Cider. Enjoy!

Zen and the Art of Cooking Beer Can Chicken provides the reader with the full cookbook experience. Starting with some information about unique cooking devices that infuse your chicken or turkey with different flavorings, the book then covers several important aspects of beer can cooking, including safety; gas, oven, and charcoal grilling; rubs and marinades; and brining/injections. The book is more than just a list of recipes: It wants the reader to get the full experience, with facts and tips on all aspects of the cooking process.

This book has an interesting name and many potential readers might be wondering exactly what is meant by the term "Beer Can Chicken". This is discussed in the books opening sections, with author Cary Black explaining how the beer can method works and how to prepare a beer can for this purpose. The beer can method of cooking chicken inspired special cooking devices like the Poultry Pal Cooker, described in the book's opening pages, and it forms the basis for other kitchen devices that help to cook chicken in a similar manner. These different cooking tools have slight differences, but they function the same way. They allow the meat juices to trickle down into a pan, combine with the beer (or other liquid) placed in the pan, and then bubble up, back into the chicken. The use of an actual beer can doesn't accomplish this feat as perfectly as an actual cooking apparatus, but the basic idea is the same. This produces a chicken that is flavorful, moist, and tender.

I like the fact that this book includes so many nonpoultry recipes. Most cookbooks of this type would have stuck with the main topic of chicken and failed to mention anything else. But Zen and the Art of Cooking Beer Can Chicken includes recipes for both side dishes and desserts. Author Cary Black wanted buyers of the book to have some good recipes for other foods to serve along with the fullycooked bird, so he added these final two sections to the book. They include vegetable side dishes and other things that are compatible with chicken, along with some tasty sweet foods to finish off the meal.

If you're the type who cooks on a budget, you will appreciate the fact that most of the recipes in this book are simple to prepare and they require only a small list of ingredients. Besides the chicken, it is common to see other requirements like onions, potatoes, butter, pepper, salt, garlic power, etc. The liquid flavor essence can call for ingredients like beer, wine, rum, cranberry juice, soy sauce, etc. As long as you have plenty of spices on hand, along with an assortment of beer and liquor, you should have no trouble rounding up the ingredients for most all of these recipes. The ingredients are relatively few, and they are basic ingredientsnot items that are going to cost a small fortune to purchase.

Overall, Zen and the Art of Cooking Beer Can Chicken is a good recipe book for those who like to cook chicken and who like to discover new and creative ways to make an ordinary piece of poultry taste like something prepared by a gourmet chef. The presentation of the book is much like the printout from a standard word document, and it wasn't designed with the most professional look in mind. But the book, taken as a whole, is quite good. It offers some unique and delicious ways to prepare a chicken or turkey along with some good educational material, side dish and dessert recipes, and basic advice to ensure your meal is one worth remembering.

Beer can chicken has been a fave at my house for a long time. It was nice to find a book with all the brining and injecting information! No one else has that! The desserts were good and so were the accompaniments. I use this cookbook VERY much and really like it. The cartoons and humor made it a book to cook with that made me smile!
