Top Shape: 12 Weeks to Your Ideal Physique

Top Shape: 12 Weeks to Your Ideal PhysiqueI never really believed that I could work off the flab and fat that I had accumulated over the last 20 years. That was before I came across this book ! Believe me,this book worked.Maybe not in 12 weeks(mine was a pretty serious case !)but certainly over 6 months,it worked wonders on me !And all with some floor exercices and a pair of dumbells ! My stomach is iron-hard,and every part of my body is taut and muscled!

Lady, you sure know how to handle a body !! Great show and THANKS !

I am a fan of Joyce Vedral and have used her other books. When my brother, who lives 900 miles away said he was starting with weights, I told him to get one of Joyce's books. Of course, he didn't. So when I found it here, I had it sent to him. HE LOVES IT! He was so excited about it, he asked me to send a book for his wife to use, so I sent "Definition" to her. He is 56 and LOOKIN GOOD! Joyce makes it easy to get started with easy to follow instructions and pictures. She is what baby-boomers need!

I am a 29 year old martial artist who took sabbatical and had to rebuild what I had lost. This book helped much more than Schlossberg's DUMMIES guide or the Schwarzenegger books....plus, unlike most fitness books, this author actually cares to follow up on emails and such. Sure, she is selling dumbells in the back, but that doesnt mean her information is any less valuable. This is her career. Stick with the plan and see the results.

This is an excellent book for anyone wanting to maintain a toned and healthy body. Simple plan with a minimum of workout tools required. A few handweights and a workout bench is all you need to stay tight, toned and muscular without overdoing it. Highly recommended.

This book is a great way to start your weight lifting workout. BUT i have found a few problems with it as i have progressed.

1] The split routine she recommends is WRONG. She recommends biceps, triceps, and then chest, shoulders, and chest [and then a day off]. NO, the back exercises work out your biceps.. and the shoulder and chest exercises will work out your triceps... THUS violating the VERY Important rule of letting a body party have 24 hours off before you work it out again. The REAL split routine should be biceps, back, then chest, shoulders, and triceps. Doing it her way not only hurt my development but also was harmful to my overworked muscles that never really got enough time to heal between workouts.

2] The second and third shoulder exercises she lists are HORRIBLE. I have never seen them in ANY OTHER workout book, that is because you should always lift away from the floor against gravity. Those two exercises have to lifting the weights paralla to the floor, BAD and hard to do. She probably did this because she was hard up for exercises that allow you to always use the same 3 sets of dumbells.

3] Back exercise 3 [upward row] is also works shoulders too. This is bad if again you are using the split routine. Also I have heard from experienced lifters that the upward row is a horrible exercise and should be eliminated all together.

Otherwise an excellent do-it-yourself starting workout. Simple and straight forward. Start with it and see the results, BUT if you stick with it you will need more and better books then this.

An Introduction to Community Health, Seventh Edition

An Introduction to Community Health, Seventh EditionEverything I expected it to be. The rating said it was "like new" and when I received it the packaging was still on, and it saved me $100 from buying it new from my school book store!

This book is pretty good. I needed this edition for my Community Health class. Everything is really clear and understandable. I like it.

It doesn't match up because the graphs and grids are out of place. It looks good, but I'm a little behind in class because I have to flip so far ahead to find a certain page then go back.

Very definitive, clearly differentiating "community health" from "public health" , the former being more practically applied and the latter being a discipline with global implications. The text is thoughtfully comprehensive, giving more relevance to the health needs of local communities and providing instructive ways of engaging citizens to proactively find practical solutions to a myriad of community health problems. Pilates at Home

Pilates at HomeI am trying to learn about Pilates, so I bought this book in addition to another by the same author titled Pilates for Beginners, only to find that they are the exact same book, just with a different publisher and a different title, so beware! It is a very nice book, but I didn't need two copies of it! I REALLY like the spiral-bound stand-up design. I found it was very helpful to also read 'Pilates: Body in Motion' by Alycea Ungaro for more details and explanations on how to do the exercises. I recommend Pilates: Body in Motion for an extremely thorough and helpful explanation, but for doing the workout, this book's stand-up easel design can't be beat! Come to think of it, why don't ALL exercise program books have the same easel design so you can use them during your work-outs without having to hold the pages open or put heavy things on the edges of the book to keep the pages open? By the way, this book's easel design seemed stronger to me than the other publisher's easel design, although the other one was available for much less cost.

The Healthy Home: Simple Truths to Protect Your Family from Hidden Household Dangers

The Healthy Home: Simple Truths to Protect Your Family from Hidden Household DangersThis is an easy to read book that provides excellent advice on a key aspect of preventing illness and premature death. I'm qualified to say that, because despite having an immune deficiency I have not been sick since 1971. Dr. Wentz, Dave Wentz, and Donna K. Wallace are right on target, throughout this book.

This book shows you how to reduce the toxicity of your home to tolerable levels, greatly reducing a long list of risk factors for debilitating and costly illnesses. It touches, also on that tripod of diet, rest, and exercise. The advice it offers is excellent for several reasons:

1. It's accurate. Anyone reading my reviews knows I am brutal toward authors who present fiction as fact, and I often state such dereliction of editorial integrity is the norm. I found no factual errors in this book.

2. It's understandable. Rather than try to impress us with jargon, the authors made their points in plain English.

3. It's interesting. The book presents the information in the context of Ms. Wallace's witnessing Dr. Wentz's inspection of Dave Wentz's home. That real-life approach makes you want to keep reading, because the reader can relate to what's going on.

4. It's practical. Anyone can follow the advice in this book. In some cases, the authors say what's ideal but provide you with less than ideal alternatives for improving your home environment. It's directed at ordinary people who have ordinary incomes and ordinary levels of discipline. You do not have to become a monk to reap the benefits.

5. It's timely. In a nation that just recently endured major legislation allegedly concerned with lowering medical care costs while increasing the overhead involved in medical care and doing zilch in regard to health care, this book helps anyone solve root causes of medical problems. Health care is the key to greatly reducing medical care costs.

Another way this book stands out is there is no fluff. By that, I mean the authors don't waste your time with "advice" that is unlikely to be of any use. Nor do they try to tell us that we need to go back to the stone age or do anything else that is impractical. I'm tempted to provide examples, but I'd rather you read the book for yourself so you can enjoy the wealth of information in it, plus enjoy the health benefits of following what Dr. Wentz advises.

If the federal government actually wanted to reduce medical costs and fix the Medicare cost problem, it would issue a copy of this book to everyone who files a tax return. That small investment would save the public treasury billions of dollars per year, assuming the recipients read this marvelous book and followed even half of its sensible advice.

This book is nicely laid out, with a typeface that's actually large enough for an adult. It seems like a quick read, even though it's packed with information.

It consists of 6 chapters and two epilogues in 250 pages. It contains nice graphics and informative sidebars. Especially helpful are the frequent questionnaires that help the reader grade how well s/he is doing in a particular area. These are short, but illuminating.

I am writing this review about a week after my father died from causes that adherence to this book would have prevented. Sure, buy a copy for yourself and refer to it weekly. But get a copy for someone else, too. The greater the number of people following the advice in this book, the more all of us win.

Dr. Myron Wentz and his son, Dave Wentz (CEO of Usana Health Sciences, Inc.) have collaborated on a great guide to educate families on the hidden dangers inside the home. Dave's life changed with the birth of his first child in 2009, as all of us change when we become parents. That enlightenment confirmed for him the need to look at changing things...not the world, but where we spend the most time...the home.

This book provides facts and studies on the areas where we spend the most time; the bedroom, the bathroom, the office, the kitchen...our homes. The authors reveal small changes every family can make to reduce exposure to toxins and chemicals, and by doing so, to increase their chances of a longer, healthier lifestyle. The information is presented in an easy-to-read, humorous (where appropriate) fashion.

As an eco-friendly interior designer, I constantly keep an eye out for new books in my field. When I saw The Healthy Home: Simple Truths to Protect Your Family from Hidden Household Dangers, I picked it up (at B+N) and read it on the spot.

This is not the first book on this subject, but it is well researched and I had learned a lot. It is written by three authors--doctor Wentz and his son and Donna Wallace, the "listener". It is the the father who provides the unique perspective because he is a cellular doctor and it is through his understanding that we learn how toxic products actually harm and can destroy cells.

The book explains the hidden dangers in the home. The authors believe that indoor air pollution will one day be considered the asbestos of yesteryear.

Beginning in the bedroom, they discuss the common hidden toxins that can harm our health--from pesticides in mattresses, to chemicals in our pajamas to electricity. They also offer simple ans safe solutions.

I love the fact that they tell us to use our noses to help determine what is unhealthy--that a healthy and clean home is one that basically has no smell. They illustrate the dangers of perfume in an experiment with crickets dying from the chemicals that are perfume. And, they compare the dangers to perfume to that of second hand smoke! (As someone who is chemically sensitive, I say, amen! I am just waiting for the fine day that perfume is banned from all public spaces!)

I recommend HARMONIOUS ENVIRONMENT as a companion to this book, as I use it as a reference for my work. I also like books by Michael Pollan on how and what to eat.

This book is clear and easy to read and understand. Recommend.

Homemade Cosmetics: Over 100 Recipes You Can Make at Home: (Facials - Baths - Hair Rinses - Lip Balm

Homemade Cosmetics: Over 100 Recipes You Can Make at Home:In this world I see more and more people getting back to basics, shying away from perservatives, and this book is filled with home remedies and recipes to help you. Many are tried and true passed down from generations. I will admit I am a bit skeptical on the pine cone bath, gathering the pine needles and cones, boiling and putting in the refrigerator for 13 hours, I do appreciate the warning of the stickiness that may occur... I think I'd rather just sleep outside than to go to that trouble.

Most of the other ingredients are eggs, honey, witch hazel, baking soda, all quality recipes to help the individual do it themselves. The author has a good website with a lot of the basic information and some recipes also.

I keep forgetting in the kindle if you like a recipe, use the bookmark feature to bookmark once, then you can use the "go to" feature later. A working TOC is a better feature imho.

I was pleasantly surprised at the wonderful content of this book. I am not one for making things at home, but this book had so many recipes for things like makeup and salves and home remedies whose ingredients are readily available outdoors near your own home, depending on your location, or available in a store for very little money, that I was intrigued just flipping through! No preservatives, no harsh chemicals -I think I will give some of these things a try, especially the sage tea eyebrow dye! A well-researched and easily read book with clear easy recipes. A must-have!

I have several allergies to over the counter products for anything that touches my skin. That includes soap, shampoo, conditioner, hair gel, lotions, toothpaste too! I found several receipes I could use and have tried the bath soap for lavendar bath liquid soap that I have made twice. I have not had the red sores break out yet. I would have had a problem by now I do think. The conditioner with honey is very good too. I got some help putting two together that is working as well for my mouth! I will use this over and over I think.

The author highlights the advantages of making your own bath and body products which include no preservatives, lower costs, customizing, environmentally friendly, and one I will add...FUN. I never knew I could make so many products at home, to include, lip balms, soaking bath products, toothpaste, mouthwash, shampoo, conditioner, toners, scrubs, hand lotions, deodorant, bug repellents, etc. I have not made anything yet from the book, but plan to in the near future. I enjoy knowing what the common bath and body products I normally buy are comprised of and how to make these products at home. Knowing this information contributes to my feeling of self-reliance.
