How to Choose a Nursing Home: A Guide to Quality Caring

How to Choose a Nursing Home: A Guide to Quality CaringThis comprehensive guide, written by a geriatric nurse with over fifteen years experience in long-term care, will help you select a home that will give your loved one both quality care and a place to live with dignity.

It will answer such questions as:

* What kind of care does your relative need?

* What is the cost of care and who will pay the bill?

* What are the qualities to look for in a good nursing home?

* How can you recognize a substandard facility?

* What are the qualifications for Medicaid and Medicare?

* Where can you get further information on financial assistance?

* What can you do if your relative is unwilling to go to a nursing home?

* What should you do if you find the care to be inadequate, uncaring, or in violation of state or federal law?

Excellent straight forward guide. It's not easy taking this difficult step for one or both of your parents nor will they necessarily agree with you. This specialist author has evidentally seen it all and knows of all those sensitivities in dealing with a parent while providing a helpful guide, from an "insiders" point of view, on what to look for and what to watch out for. All the homes are businesses first and foremost to make money. Care of an elderly "customer", so to speak, that may not be around to complain in a couple of years or worse doesn't even have the speech facility to complain, puts these homes in the driver's seat. I appreciated this "insiders" guide with how to see through all that and make the right choice.

Dialysis without Fear: A Guide to Living Well on Dialysis for Patients and Their Families

Dialysis without Fear: A Guide to Living Well on Dialysis for Patients and Their FamiliesI wish that this book was available when I started dialysis. I recommend this book for anyone wanting to know more about dialysis and/or transplants,(patients, family. friends, etc).

I gave a copy to the social worker at my dialysis clinic and she is getting more copies for the clinic to educate future clients.

This book was most helpful for me. It covered a lot of critical information and helps with decision making. It provides experiences from several different patients and input from drs.and nurses who regularly deal with patients in kidney failure.

I purchased this book based on a review I read on the internet. It was more assuring because it is written by a doctor who is on dialysis and his wife. It helped put me at ease about the whole process. It gives info on the various types of dialysis & tells why he chose the type he uses without making one feel that is the only way to go.

Author Dr. Daniel Offer has had over seven years on dialysis along with a career as a psychiatrist, so he's in the perfect position professionally and personally to discuss coping methods and hardships associated with dialysis. His wife and daughter co-author the book, bringing their own experiences as family members: the result is a collection of personal and medical revelations not only from the author and his family, but from other veteran patients, staff and doctors on how to understand and cope with dialysis. It's an excellent general-interest survey any medical and public lending library should have.

Recieving this book I really did not think I would learn much more than I already new as a nurse. I was surprised and reminded of how much we do Not tell the Patient or family that could help them understand the processes. Especially at the beginning. This book was very easy to read and served as excellent info for all who practise in dialysis or recieve it or know someone who does.

I am on my second time going through this book. It is a great guide to detoxing your body and mind. I have tried other books and methods but Blasucci makes it very clear and easy to follow. I did not feel overwhelmed and felt that the information was easy to follow. The recipes at the end of the book are tasty and a good example of the wholesome food that the author recommends. Enjoy!

I'm on my 2nd time through the book ... this time, instead of just reading it I'm treating it like Loa's boot camp, working a chapter a week. Still early in the program, I'm finding it to truly be life changing. All Health's Breaking Loose holds my keys for perpetual youth. All Sickness Is Home Sickness

All Sickness Is Home SicknessDianne Connelly has written a book that is informative, enlightening, and soothing to the soul. Through the seamless, almost poetic flow of her words, she conveys a profound and tender respect for the reader that in itself is a healing meditation. Acupuncture is Connelly's particular discipline, but anyone interested in bio-psycho-spiritual healing will draw great comfort from this work. She calls us back again and again to the fact that it is relationship that eases all of our ailments, and it is connection--person to person, ego to Self, psyche to body--that creates wholeness. I re-read All Sickness is Homesickness whenever I need a gentle reminder of the sacredness of my own healing vocation, and I recommend it frequently to my patients.

Reading this work is like reading good poetry--vivid, precise, with an economy of words and a wealth of images that bring the reader into a living conversation with the author. The book is about relationships which is are essence of healing--between patient and practitioner, between individual and symptoms, between the sacred and the mundane, and between the spirit and the body. In an era of new age "presto-change-o" approaches to holistic healing, it is refreshing to encounter a writer with such depth of knowledge and soulful expression. I recommend it to my patients often.

Beautifully rich prose and poetry by a gifted writer. Evokes a longing for and creates a meeting with the deep essence of healing, the river that must underlie the technical or methodological details in any school of medicine, new or ancient, western or eastern, "religious" or "not so". All these diverse forms of healing must somehow make and sustain a vital connection with life, with life force at a cellular level.

The author who is an acupuncturist, a leader in her field, has plenty of technical experience to be respected that she could have highlighted. Yet she has published something very unique -not another text/reference on techniques, secrets of the ancients, or point prescriptions of which there are already many. Instead she creates a meditative invitation which spirals ever deeper into sacred space, that "home" created in and by relationship, where confrontation with mystery, reverence and life force can bring about change, healing, and transformation.

Reading it renews my own quest, joy and wonder for life -for witnessing nature's deep continuous stream of wisdom and its capacity to transform wounding into healing, often where it is least expected. The beauty of her own prose and the poetic quotes which she has collected over a lifetime illustrate an inner map for travellers who seek BEING, as both the healer and the healed. I and likely others will desire to return home again, over and over, through the pages of her book.

Two stars because the book comes highly recommended from a friend so I was eager to read it.

So I downloaded it to my Kindle for iPad but it downloaded oddly like the pages just exploded and then were always turned sideways so had to lock the rotation and even then, the pages were unreadable whole hunks were just not showing up.

Then I realized I could read it on the computer so I opened it but it showed up with the pages on their side, meaning I'd have to kink my neck to the left and read half-upside down. Not an option.

When I contacted "Help" they suggested I delete it and re-download it but that didn't work. Then wipe everything off my Kindle including all the books that work just fine and reload everything too much time and given that it was showing up oddly on the computer reading option I figured it probably wasn't scanned properly to begin with. So I just returned the Kindle purchase, got my money back, and will figure out something else probably just borrow it from my friend.

I love technology when it works.

The Miracle of Honey: Practical Tips for Health, Home & Beauty

The Miracle of Honey: Practical Tips for Health, Home & BeautyIf you're curious about honey and why preserving the honey bee population is important, this is a quick read you should flip through. The author certainly did their homework. Although I wish the book would have been written in a slightly less clinical manner, and that the author would have done a better job citing their sources, I found this book to be very interesting. It was full of all sorts of different honey facts. I was most impressed with the section that described the different classifications of honey.

The book also has some recipes for foods and beauty products I want to try out.

The Cornerstone: Classroom Management That Makes Teaching More Effective, Efficient, and Enjoyable

The Cornerstone: Classroom Management That Makes Teaching More Effective, Efficient, and EnjoyableI have used Ms. Powell's website for years, as a newer teacher, to get ideas and information for making my classroom run as smoothly as possible. The book reads much like her website: she is speaking to you as if you were sitting in the same room having a conversation about management. The tone is friendly and conducive to passing along information about managing a classroom to make the most out of every second you have with your students. The ONLY thing I don't like is that there are no "reproducibles" included in the book -you have to visit the site to get those. The upside of that, however, is that the downloads are word documents that you can customize which makes it easy to adapt the resources to your specific needs. I will definitely be recommending this book to my colleagues who are just entering the field.

This is one of the, if not the, best books I have ever read on classroom management. All of the ideas are very user friendly and easy to implement. A couple of weeks ago I went to visit a fellow teacher at her lake house for the weekend. Of course I took my book to show her. Well, about an hour after I left I realized I left it there. As soon as I got home I ordered another one because I wasn't going to be able to get my book back until after school started, and I wanted to finish reading it now. My friend was very excited to find out she has a great new book!

I have personally used many of the ideas that Angela Powell describes in her book. Last year I taught a very challenging 4th grade class. I tried everything with no success and finally came across the Token System. It was easy to use and very effective. I am planning on using it again this year when school starts, instead of waiting until problems arise later in the year. In addition, Angela has managed to cover any and all questions a new teacher might have from setting up their classroom to handling students who want to go to the water fountain all day long. But let me assure you this book is definitely not just for new teachers. There are lots of great ideas for all teachers newbies and seasoned veterans alike.

I feel very confident that you will not be disappointed if you order this book. It would be the best investment you could make in your classroom this year.

P.S. Angela also has an awesome website. Visit www.thecornerstoneforteachers.com.

I was an avid fan of her website. For years I've used her ideas and enjoyed the fabulous pictures and easy explanations that accompany room set-up to management and organizational ideas. This book is the best resource you can have. The book is a foundation for any teacher of any subject. Powell doesn't say there is one way to do something. She'll give you some ideas she'd tried years ago, and tell you what's working for her now. We all know that often our classroom students dictate how our systems need to be set up. This book will be as valuable in 25 years as it is now. The documentation chapter is especially important in today's world. Thanks Thanks Thanks to Mrs. Powell.

This is the most helpful and useful book I have read on classroom management. From organization to teaching routines, I have implemented so many of the ideas and strategies in my classroom. I am so organized that after the first month of school, I find that I can leave school on time. Managing my class is so much easier using the techniques in this book. It is an easy read written by a current teacher. I highly recommend it!

On Fridays I would always feel my stress levels rising as I tried to cope with an unruly system of collecting weekly homework contracts and handing them out for the next week, particularly as we have differentiated homework elements (spelling, maths, etc). Within hours of reading this book I had created a new routine for homework which I immediately started teaching to my students. I have never felt that stress about homework again. This book is full of practical suggestions and down-to-earth, extremely helpful advice which can be immediately implemented.

A large focus of the book is on the importance of establishing and consistently using routines or procedures in all areas for the classroom. The life-changing part of the book for me was 'Part Two: Organizing the Classroom'. I used some equipment I already had on hand to set up a system for avoiding the paper trap (Chapter 4) and finding and filing instructional resources (Chapter 5). My downfall in teaching has always been organisation and this has helped me improved in this area ten-fold.

I rarely used to have students self-correct work and when I did I always made them swap. The advice in this book helped me completely rethink my position on this and I now use self-correcting in a way that benefits both the students and me and enables me to follow-up on students who require extra assistance or re-teaching. The Cornerstone is such a wonderful resource and I have not even read the entire book yet! I have found that I can just pull out relevant sections, apply them then return to the text when I am ready for more or when I have a specific query. I am looking forward to reading the ideas and advice on instructional strategies more carefully.

I think that it fits in well with the philosophy of The Daily Five, another favourite teaching resource of mine. I always recommend this book to prac students/student teachers who visit our school and to any beginning and establishing teachers that I know (I am a third year teacher). I am sure it would contain helpful suggestions for more experienced teachers as well. I will honestly say it is the best investment in a ook that I have made to date. Thank you Angela for writing this book!

The New Age Herbalist: How to Use Herbs for Healing, Nutrition, Body Care, and Relaxation

The New Age Herbalist: How to Use Herbs for Healing, Nutrition, Body Care, and RelaxationWhen a friend of mine handed this book to me, I looked at the title and groaned. It looked like another flaky little herb book. However, when I flipped through the pages I found full-color photos, detailed write-ups, and Latin names. This book gives the chemical constituents of each herb, lists its uses (medical, culinary, etc.), and even warns of any sort of interaction with others. The quick reference section in the back makes it fast and easy to find a treatment for many common ailments.

From novice to well-learned, every herbalist should have a copy of this book in their personal library.

Why is this my favorite?

* Full-color illustrations of all herbs listed (200+)

* Actual scientific information, including chemical constituents & the results of scientific research to back/refute claims made for herbs

* Excellent information on various potential dangers

* Information on many uses: Medicinal, culinary, dyeing, etc.

* Information on cultivation and growing of various herbs

* Advice on companion planting

If you're into herbalism in the least this book is absolutely and totally essential. It has full-color photographs of most of the major herbs in both their natural and harvested (dried/powdered) states. It also lists a wealth of information on each herb from it's Latin name, common names, basic plant and chemical characteristics, homeopathic uses and quite a bit more. There are priceless reference charts in the back of the book with outstanding information about herb harvesting and cultivation in other sections. It's a bit pricey but it's full-color and WELL worth it. I NEVER loan my copy out. It's that valuable to me.

I believe that anyone caring for themselves ought to have at least 3 books on herbal actions. For studying the herbs more broadly, one would need a number of herbals (herb books) A general book is good for an overview, or quick reference, but doesn't give enough depth on any subject. "New Age Herbalist', for me, is the best for herbal indentification because it contains actual colored photos of herbs, not tiny drawings. It has an impressive amount of color plate pages for the price.

I don't think of it as a "new age" book because it would impress a scientific mind with its listing of active chemical ingredients of each herb. The rest serves as a fine overview guide also, and has a great section on homemade bath products.

I feel a need to have a book for quick reference, several for deeper knowledge on each herb, several for identification, several for historical uses, at least one for gardening and drying, a mini quick reference for traveling. When you have a headache, you don't want to be reading about how to get rid of soil bugs. Hope this helps.

This was the first book I ever got on herbs almost ten years ago. It's definatly time worn. I still use it has a helpful reference, and recommend it. As others have mentioned, it has color photos and illustrations, as well as accurate information on the uses of plants and possible side effects. It also has information on how to use the plants, and general information on the human body and what plants are useful in specific instances. It's not a handy pocket size field guide, for that, I suggest a Petersons.

Taking Care of Your Child: A Parent's Guide to Complete Medical Care

Taking Care of Your Child: A Parent's Guide to Complete Medical CareI received this book as a freebie, part of a very smart corporation's plan to get their employees to take better care of themselves and their children, presumably, of course, to thereby lessen the overall insurance burden.

Never-the-less, with the probable exception of the dictionary, it's been the most referenced book on my shelves over the last 15 years since my first child was born. I treasure its simple wisdom and sensible approach and it has helped me both to ignore certain complaints and to act quickly upon others during that time.

As for the rather embittered review which claims it's full of dangerously misleading information, I'd have to disagree (although it's important to note those comments were made in reference to feeding issues, an area -unlike meningitis, for instance, or a fall which resulted in a jagged bone protruding -in which there's still a fair bit of debate).

No, it shouldn't be used as a sole source of information, nor should it completely replace your own good judgement AND instinct. However, for any number of every day ailments and injuries that any parent will encounter with their children, its generally sound guidance will be most welcome in helping you arrive at a conclusion whether to phone the doctor or not.

Being a parent is often enough like playing pin the tail on the donkey in the dark -this book, however, WILL shine a bit of light where you might need it most.

This is an excellent book for new parents. I just love the flow charts which are great when you need answers in a hurry.

Our pediatrician told us to buy this book on our prenatal visit, about 30 years ago. It was an excellent source and can help calm a new parent and save on wasted trips to the doctor. I loved the flowchart method of telling you whether to call the doctor or not. Of course, if you are unsure or the book did not cover the exact symptoms you still should call the pediatrician. Now I am going to buy it for our daughter to use on our grandchildren.
