Make Your Place: Affordable & Sustainable Nesting Skills

Make Your Place: Affordable & Sustainable Nesting SkillsIn July 2009, I demonstrated various urban sustainability projects at a festival in Baltimore City. This book was part of my natural, homemade cleaning supplies display. Dozens of people picked up the book and were very curious to know where I got it. They all wanted to purchase it right then and there. I wished I had contacted Raleigh or Microcosm Publishing to become a distributor!

Throughout the day, many people asked me for natural ways to get rid of pests, clean different types of surfaces, etc. and I often picked up the book and turned right to Raleigh's very detailed Table of Contents. How to get rid of fleas? Clean wood floors? Make liquid dish soap? It's all right there.

From gardening to essential oils, Raleigh included it all! Not to mention the fact that the book is beautifully handwritten and illustrated. I often get my tips from the internet, but Raleigh's book is wonderful to leave in the kitchen or bathroom as an instant recipe book and guide.

A definite must-have starting guide for anyone interested in living a more sustainable lifestyle.

I love books, and have collected quite a library of volumes relating to my varied interests. Some of those interests are natural/herbal health care, natural body care, "green" household cleaning, and urban homesteading. All of those books in my library have one or more of the same ideas contained in this little volume. Yet for some reason, I absolutely love this book. It may be the awkward but adorable handwriting complete with heart-dotted i's, reminding me of my middle school diary. It could be the cute illustrations, with flowers that talk and bubble letter titles, or the little flowers and stars that emphasize the text. I have rarely read a book of this type that uses words like "nast" and "barf", or describes how to deal with crabs or yeast infections with such aplomb. And really, while it may contain recipes and ideas I have found in many other places, it also has some very new ideas that I enjoyed with surprise. All in all, I have the strangest feeling that this book will see more use in my house than several other more comprehensive volumes in my library, and I know that I will have fun in the process.

For anybody who is wondering, this book was published by Microcosm Publishing, a DIY and punk rock publishing house. Keep this in mind when coming across "offensive" terms and phrases. Quite frankly though, I found none. I did however find this book to be extensively useful and reader friendly.

The articles are all hand written in very neat penmanship, all the illustrations are hand drawn, and everything in the book has been tried out first by the author. There are three sections in the book Health and First Aid, Nontoxic Cleaning and Body Care, and Gardening. The first section includes directions on how to make tinctures and salves, a list of herbs that are antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antiviral, and also a list of which herbs and essential oils to avoid if pregnant. More useful than you know. The second section is a combination of replacements for bleach, Clorox and the like, and then recipes for herbal shampoos and whatever else you might call body care. The last section is pretty self explanatory. Gardening without choking up the ground with a jug of Wal-Mart bought chemicals. Chapters include composting, space managing and fertilizing.

I personally found the First Aid section most useful, and most tailored to my needs. This book is very informative and well worth the money. It doesn't take up a load of space (roughly 7 x 5 inches and half an inch thick, 125 pages), it goes over personal safety at the beginning of the book and includes a further reading section (more DIY punk rock goodness) at the back.

It isn't lofty or pompous, or some 100% organic and natural twerpy, skinny assed vegan kid preaching some rhetoric they heard in their college dorm. I think it is well written and friendly, there isn't any political commentary slipped in between instructions on how to turn crunchy dried things into medicinal liquid (which is more rare than you would believe). It's a good book if you are interested in an alternative way to keep yourself and your home healthy and clean.

This book is a little smaller than I expected but that's not a bad thing -it's a portable size to keep handy when you need to look something up. It's got three (all handwritten & hand-drawn) sections, one on health/beauty, one for household cleaning, and one on gardening/composting. I found the gardening/composting section most helpful with all its detailed tips and really practical hints. Trellising, sprouting, and good garden-buddies to plant together or in rotation. I was really impressed with the depth of the information in this section.

I didn't get much out of the other two sections, but I'm already pretty into making my own cleaning supplies and don't keep around near as many ingredients as this book's recipes call for (so many different essential oils, for example). So it wasn't the make-me-a-better-housewife book I expected in that regard -mostly just cream, spray, etc. recipes. But, if you don't already have your favorite recipes for, say, a window cleaner, or an ointment for a cut, you can get them here, and they look good too!

The Thyroid Diet Revolution: Manage Your Master Gland of Metabolism for Lasting Weight Loss

The Thyroid Diet Revolution: Manage Your Master Gland of Metabolism for Lasting Weight LossI have been dealing with the ups and downs of thyroid weight problems. Like everyone else I've tried Weight Watchers and everything else that works short term for me. Since reading this book, I've gotten information that no doctor has tried to share with me. In fact the doctors haven't shared any info as far as how to maintain metabolism with thyroid issues.

This book is really helping me, and just by starting the vitamins and Evening Primrose Oil, I've lost 3.5 pounds in 4 days. Awesome.

I've gotten halfway through this book and have already learned alot just not eating broccoli has made a difference. I thought i was eating well but obviously not and still have a lot to learn. Mary has really done great research and explains a lot of concerns and it's nice to know when my endocrinologist talks to me about what is going on with me i actually understand what he's telling me.

Understanding what my body is going through is a must for me. I'm a 2x cancer survivor and never knew the after effects that the radiation treatments would do to my body and what challenges i would have to go through later in life. Great book !

Now i just need to get my body to respond to everything

Definitely upgrade from the previous thyroid diet and even the living well w/ hypothyroid books. I learned more from this book, about medication differences and all about hypo and hyperthyroid. I was once a hyperthyroid and they killed my thyroid through radiation procedure and became a hypo. since then I gained up weight from 225 lbs to 286 lbs. 60 lbs! then I started to struggle losing weight because I had no idea what food should I eat and what food I shouldn't eat...

My doctor just kept telling me to do diet and exercise and that's all. I guess he doesn't know about food restrictions etc.. You can see a health diet tips on this book which actually works. I started my diet plan without exercise about 3 weeks ago now and I lost 14 lbs. how much more if I do exercise or workouts? Just the right diet will make us lose some weight. This book will tell you what your doctor should've told you -)

Where this diet does have some good information about hypothyroidism (and hyperthyroidism) the information it gives on diet aren't very revolutionary. Some information I found useful... For instance I didn't know calcium suppliments could interfere with the absorption of your thyroid medication, or that certain vitamins and vegetables could help or hinder your thyroid function. However, the title makes it appear as if the book is a detailed eating plan for those who suffer with hypothyroidism, the beginning of the book even continues that image as she talks about how all of the fad diets couldn't possibly work for us, but then she goes on to discuss how complicated hypothyroidism is and how it's impossible to give a detailed eating plan as all those who suffer with hypothyroidism are different. Then she lists a bunch of the very same fad diets she shot down in order of how good she thinks they are... A little bit of useful information, with a dash of ridiculousness and false advertisement bunched together. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone suffering from hypothyroidism.. You could find the information she gives on google. Try that and save $10.

Mary Shomon has done a wonderful job with this current book. Having thyroid disease makes is nearly impossible to lose weight. Because she herself has suffered from this for many years she understands where we are coming from. Her book offers practical advice with a bit of humor thrown in. Sometimes we just need to laugh. Great resource. Would highly recommend.

The Witchery of Archery

The Witchery of ArcheryA gentle book telling tales of archery in the deep south of USA, poetic and visually descriptive of the slower life of holiday adventures and the enjoyment shared by two brothers with the bow and arrow during the late 1800's, don't be put off that it is a photocopy book of an out of print edition, the print might be bad, but the content is good. Good bedtime reading.

Wish I had an original print of this gem. Two fellow Hoosiers, deprived of their firearms following the civil war because they served for the Confederacy, take to their old friend stick and string. If you are an archery nut like me this is an absolute must read. This is the book that started it all. The Tri-Fecta: The Witchery of Archery by Maurice Thompson, Hunting the Hard Way by Howard Hill and Hunting With The Bow and Arrow by Saxton Pope these should be in every archer's bookcase.

Buy The Witchery of Archery Now

This book presents quite a romantic perspective on archery and hunting with bow and arrow, something which can kindle interest in the sport, but also bring up sadness for a way of life that at the present time is largely lost and gone. One of the great ironies of the book is that while the author condemns those who would plunder nineteenth century wildlife with the lowly shotgun, (which required so much less skill to use than the longbow!)he himself tells story after story of going out into various American wildlands and shooting dozens of herons, cranes, woodpeckers, and pretty much any number of any bird that the whim of the moment inspired in him, including the now-extinct Ivory-Billed Woodpecker. Which just goes to show that one can be as irresponsble with a bow and arrow as with a gun, in spirit if not by numbers. Yes, Maurice Thompson, many a US citizen who in this day and age attempted to find himself a place to live out your beautiful stories of the grand old days when boys had plenty of space to explore and camp and dream, would be saddened to find himself limited to the tiny spaces left between ever-increasing private property holdings and restrictive US Fish and Game laws. And if he tried to imitate your adventures, he might well end up in jail. NOt that it isn't valuable to dream. And the romance of archery can certainly be kindled by this sweet book with its delightful nineteenth century flavor. The book also has an appendix on the concrete specifics of building a bow, fletching, string and shooting techniques.

Overall I found this to be an enjoyable collection of hunting stories that so well reflects what some might consider a deplorable period in our history. After all, the writer shots anything that moves (while crticizing the users of modern shotguns of the same), he beats his dog, uses woodpeckers for target practice, and holds to many of the stereotypes that were common of the time. But historical nuances aside there is something nostalgic and endearing about the chance to gaze at a simpler golden era of the sport, especially when told with such detailed passion. Mr. Thompsons love for archery and the wild places of late 19th century U.S. are palpable and moving. And all the while one can't help but pick up a tidbit or two about the art even raising a chuckle here and there at the craziness of some of the adventures told. This makes the book both a pleasurable read on its own and a must read for any toxophilite or lover of traditional archery. I recommend it without hesitation, especially now that it is in eBook form. Enjoy!

Youth Strength Training:Programs for Health, Fitness and Sport (Strength & Power for Young Athlete)

Youth Strength Training:Programs for Health, Fitness and SportAs a parent of 2 teenage boys I was looking for a book on youth strength training and I found it!The descriptions of sample programs are easy to understand and the photos of starting and finishing positions of every exercise are priceless. Highly recommended to parents who want to learn about safe and proper techniques for lifting weights.

Drs. Faigenbaum and Westcott are at the top of their game. The new edition of this book is a world-class guide to preparing student-athletes for the demands of sport and of life.

What makes this book so extraordinary is the authors' evidenced-based approach, and their application of an educational model to training. They do a superb job of explaining strength training as part of childrens' long-term development rather than just in terms of fitness. The discussions of its role in skill acquisition, as well as its transfer to performance and health, are terrific. They also do some important mythbusting.

The big payoff is in the authors' insights on the real risks of working with youth: missed opportunities to teach the fundamentals, the problems with early specialization, and the dangers of failing to prepare for real-world activities. Everything from athletics to ADLs involve strength and power, folks. Here's the curriculum guide.

Youth Strength Training should be included as an integral book in the library of EVERY youth coach, physical education teacher and parent that wants to learn the RIGHT way to train our youth! Drs. Faigenbaum and Westcott have taken a lifetime of scientific based research and practical applications of the proper way to train our children and young athletes, and have provided a well conceived, appropriate and safe method of training for young people. By following the principles, practice and programs outlined in Youth Strength Training, the coach, teacher and/or parent can not only provide the correct way to improve the strength and condition of the young boy and girl, but give those young people a way to exercise that is fun and functional! Simply put These programs WORK!!! This is one of the finest books I have ever seen on the unique and specialized strength and conditioning training for the young. The authors' work with youth for their entire professional careers is brought together in this book that is practical, functional, and easy to follow and implement. I give Youth Strength Training: Programs for Health, Fitness and Sport my highest recommendation.

Once again, Dr. Faigenbaum has succeeded with "Youth Strength Training" in proving why he is one of the most Prestigious & Well-Respected Experts on the topic of Youth Strength Training & Conditioning. The present generation of children are less active than ever before. This book stresses that children are not miniature adults and must not be trained as such. We must continue to bring the concept of "play" into the training of todays youth, as many kids lack the basic skills needed to run, skip, and jump. Without those skills and the pressure of the "early specialization" parent, transferable skills learned in playing multiple sports are lost & underconditioned youth are at a greater risk for injury & burnout.

As a Titleist Performance Institute Certified Golf Fitness Professional who specializes in Youth Performance training, I would highly recommend no other methods than the principles laid out in this book. The research and data based programs that Wescott & Faigenbaum bring in this book fully cover any underlying Myths & Misconceptions about Youth Strength Training. The authors provide easy to follow programs for any child, not just athletes.

I cannot stress enough how highly I recommend that any Parent or Strength Training coach have this book in their library

Coach Yourself to Success : 101 Tips from a Personal Coach for Reaching Your Goals at Work and in Li

Coach Yourself to Success : 101 Tips from a Personal Coach for Reaching Your Goals at Work and in LifeI have read many, many self help books over the past decade. Some of these books are classics, others are not. This book (for me at least) falls in the "not classic" category: just too much fluff for me.

Normally I would have just donated this book to a local charity and moved on to another book. However, I feel that I must add my comments about this book, to add more balance to the other reviews found here.

Many of Talane's tips are common sense, and would be helpful to someone just starting out on the road to self improvement. Some of the tips are just plain wacky. For example, in tip 20: Feng Shui Your Home and Office, we are invited to make sure the front entrance door of our house never opens to face a bathroom. If it does, we are advised to keep the door closed. Great tip, for modesty reasons as well as for Feng Shui. We also learn that we should "never design or buy a house with a bathroom in the center of the house; it will drain out all the energy." She doesn't know why she does these things, she does just does these things because they "work".

One of the other tips that struck me as strange was the advice to identify our needs. As an example, she mentiones that some people are compulsive shoppers because they want to feel needed. If this is our need, we are invited to ask people to let us know how cherished we are for 4 to 6 weeks... that should be enough to stop the compulsive shopping. Much of the book seemed a bit too simplistic for me.

One other personal issue: each tip is prefaced with a quote from some great thinkers... however, some are dialog clips from TV episodes like Rossanne and Mamma's Family. Those types of quotes are not untelling of the level of content you will find in this book.

Like I said, if this is the first self improvement book you purchase, you will find a fairly shallow treatment of many wide ranging topics... most of which should help you begin your self improvement path. Personally, I could not force myself to finish the book: I only made it to page 174.

If you do purchase this book, don't stop with this one, keep going on to deeper, more comprehensive works.

I wish I could give more than five stars. I have a library of over 2,000 self help books, and this is by far one of the best I have read AND taken action on. Usually I read a book and put it on the shelf. This book prompts you to take action. The author walks you through getting rid of energy drains in your life, setting up personal boundaries that may have slipped, and getting your health, finances, relationships your entire life back in order and in balance. Even if you just read the book and take one action, you will change your life for the better. Give it a try. There is no filler or fluff here just concise, constructive actions to take to improve your life.

Buy Coach Yourself to Success : 101 Tips from a Personal Coach for Reaching Your Goals at Work and in Li Now

What can I say? Except that this book is the hands down best thing I have bought for myself...ever! The advice is extremely pragmatic and you'll find yourself doing things to improve your life before you even finish the first chapter. The seemingly small tasks you'll undertake usuing this book will yield BIG results -everything from getting out of debt to communicating more effectively to looking better. She does a great job of explaining how you can do some elements of the program that seem expensive and indulgent in low-cost ways. **NOTE: The majority of the tips do not require any money at all.

I am living proof that using Talane's methods work. Before this book, I was hopelessly in debt, making less than I deserved, looking and feeling downtrodden and depressed. Six months later, my credit is great, debts manageable, I make more money, enjoy my job more, I have hired an image consultant, I get manicures every week, and things just keep getting better.

You don't have to do every step in order or do all 101 at once. And you don't have to be rich. Talane helps you build a strong foundation and then take steps to reach your potential. I can't explain it, but you will find yourself taking better care of yourself than you ever thought possible...and getting out of debt, making more money, with more confidence, looking better, in a cleaner home, more relaxed, and enjoying your life more than ever before.

If you can't afford to hire Talane herself to coach you, get this book. She has been very generous with sharing her coaching techniques in this wonderful book.

I picked up the book because I was interested in life coaching as a career as well as in useful self-help/life improvement tips. Well, taking the author's words and advice to heart, I also got a better, happier life!

The book is divided into chapters of steps to take in order to move towards your ideal life personal organization, self-care, career, relationships, money management, etc. Although you are supposed to do the actions as you read them, I read the book through cover to cover first (which I recommend). Knowing all of the steps from the outset really helped to get started on the right foot when I went back the second time and started doing the steps. Plus it's exciting to see all that you will be working on and how it will change your life!

Besides an overall excellent program, the author's writing is conversational and very easy to read; the success stories are motivational and really hit home the points the author conveys.

Beware the life changes don't happen overnight. It takes belief in the system, hard work, and consistency. But my life has not been the same since reading this book. I've become a lot healthier physically and mentally, improved on all of my relationships including my marriage, moved to where I really want to live, and am pursuing the career of my dreams. I don't think I would have had the tools and the courage to do all of it without this book, and I can't imagine where I'd be now without it.

This is a book to keep in your library, to return to time and again, to reference, and to give to your family and friends. Read it, believe it, do it, and change your life!

I tried to read this book three years ago, and at the time, I would have heartily agreed with some of the other critiques. I stumbled through a few of the chapters and tossed it on my bookshelf without another thought. It did not seem to apply to my life at the time and I thought it was too much fluff for me. Oh, how little did I know back then! Fortunately, I didn't give the book away and today I'm glad that I gave it a second chance. I have learned that sometimes we are not prepared to read certain books at certain times in our lives. Just because it may not compliment our current mindset, we tend to blame the book. That is exactly what I did three years ago.

Now, three years later, with my life plate so full that it is overflowing, I saw this book as if it was beckoning me to read it. This book is exactly what I need to read at this point of my overcrowded life. The author gives point after point so applicable to me, it feels as if she has read my personal life story. The instructions are delivered in a delicate manner, yet they are dead on accurate. Some of the advice hits me to the core. I can really relate to each chapter. Sometimes with a nod, and most of the time with an "ouch".

To reap the most of this book, I kept a notebook handy because Talane gives a lot of impromptu exercises. This is great for getting the creative juices flowing on the spot and for reflecting back on my thoughts at a later date.

There is a famous quote about self development: "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear." I am glad that I was ready when I took that second look at this valuable book. I have gained a lot from it and would recommend it to anyone who is READY to take life to the next level.

How to Grow Fresh Air: 50 House Plants that Purify Your Home or Office

How to Grow Fresh Air: 50 House Plants that Purify Your Home or OfficeThe book is laid out beautifully. The 50 plants are listed by rank based on removal of chemical vapors, ease of maintenance, resistance to insect infestation, and transpiration rate. Each plant gets a two-page spread; one page discusses the plant's ideal environment, sunlight conditions, care, and general information about the plant along with a full photo of it. The next page has a zoomed-in full-page photo of the leaves and/or flowers so the reader gets a feel for what the plant looks like and how it will fit with their decor.

The book begins by discussing the research about the air purification qualities of houseplants. The initial chapters explain how air contaminates enter our homes, the adverse effects these toxins have on humans, and how plants remove the contaminates from the air. I was surprised to learn that common household items such as blankets, toys, gas stoves, computers, and carpets can lead to allergies, asthma, even cancer, and that they might contribute to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Once I read how certain plants can remove these dangerous microbes from the air, my husband and I immediately discussed adding these plants to our home.

The author explains in great detail how to care for the plants, which I found very helpful as a novice indoor gardener. The author also details the specific toxins that different plants remove, and indicates whether the plants transpire at night (which is good for a bedroom) or during the day.

This is a beautifully put-together book focusing on a unique aspect of plant ownership. Entries include both a full-on picture of a healthy, attractively potted specimen, plus a close-up detail of leaves &/or flowers. Descriptions of plant care are concise, well organized and accompanied by a more generalized description of the plant and particulars. Each plant is rated on four characteristics (removal of chemical vapors, ease of growth & maintenance, resistance to insect infestation, & transpiration rate), using an easy to read bar chart which appears on the same page as the description & picture.

This book is an excellent addition to an avid collector's plant library, both for its curiosity value & beautiful coverage of basic houseplants, and doubtless of interest to people concerned about air quality as well. It also provides enough basic information on each plant to be a useful reference for beginning enthusiast, but I would qualify that by saying that newbies will probably want a more broadly based work as their first home reference guide. For people looking for gift books, the pictures & layout are lovely.

Buy How to Grow Fresh Air: 50 House Plants that Purify Your Home or Office Now

This book not only gives concise, quantitative data about which substances each plants removes from the air, but combines this data with other factors like ease of care and pest resistance to give one overall ranking to each plant. The introduction is fascinating, especially the part about his eco-house which uses plants to clean his water waste as well as the air. However, what I like best about the book is the gorgeous pictures. I have never seen a plant book with such large, glossy pictures of such perfect plants matched with the ideal pot. It's beautiful!

PROS:

There are many positive aspects of this book nicely shot photos and overviews of many plants, including various rankings for each plant: Removal of Chemical Vapors, Ease of Growth and Maintenance, Resistance to Insect Infestation, Transpiration Rate. It also does a good job explaining why each of these aspects is important.

CONS:

I took off one star for how brief and general the overview and care are while this is a good basic listing of plants, you're going to need another reference for tips on purchasing, planting, placement, etc.

I took off another star for something I find much more important it's probably enough to knock off the two stars on its own. There is NO indication on any of the plant pages as to toxicity. For those of us who have pets and/or children, it is critical to know what in our homes is poisonous. I specifically checked the pages for plants that I know offhand to be toxic Poinsettia and Peace Lilly and neither mentioned anything about it.

This could be a forgivable omission in a general listing of plants, but for a book that claims to "Purify Your Home or Office" it seems unnecessarily reckless.

For example, it recommends the Peace Lilly, saying its "ability to remove indoor air pollutants and its excellent performance in all categories make it a most valuable houseplant," without mentioning that if ingested by pets, it can cause symptoms leading to "convulsions, renal failure, coma and death."

I plan on going through the book, searching online to find out how toxic each listed plant is, and labeling them as such in the book. If you're willing to do this, then the book should be useful to you.

Want How to Grow Fresh Air: 50 House Plants that Purify Your Home or Office Discount?

The photos are simple, beautiful, and informative. The information for each plant is really helpful, and it's nice to have a chart of which toxins come from which sources. I really enjoyed seeing the different plants and picking a good one for our house (although it was hard for me to track one down and I actually ended up buying seeds for it--I hope they'll grow!). The book is organized pretty intuitively, although navigation might take a little longer if you want to find a particular plant (since they're in order of overall rating rather than alphabetical order, you'd have to either use the index or flip for a while).

The only reason I didn't give the book five stars is that I would make an addition to each individual page with a plant on it: I'd list information about whether the plant is poisonous to humans and their pets. For people who have young children, cats, dogs, and/or other animals in the house (or the clinic, or wherever the plants will be placed), this is an important consideration.

This book is full of common sense and good advice. I've lost 25 pounds on it, and it's gone forever. This is the best book.

I like the concept of making weight loss more of a spiritual journey, but Chumley's religious approach is a little more than I can accept. I think if you are really at rock bottom regarding your weight, or if you are quite religious to start with, this book is more likely to be helpful to you. On the plus side, it is simple to understand, concise and well-written. Not a bad read, and has some helpful bits even if you're unable to accept the entire book as a new way of life.

I thought this book was the personal journey of the author's weight loss. The text goes on spiritual and New Age tangents. I am sorry I bought it.

GOOD WAY TO BE INDEPENDENT FROM PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRIES. A LOT OF GOOD REMEDIES HAVE BEEN IGNORED BECAUSE THERE WAS NO PROFIT IN THEM. OUR GRANDPARENTS HAD A LOT RIGHT.

Was told by a friend to get this book was very informative. Since so many of us today are on medications from doctors which are causing us more harm than ever she told me about home remedies. If they worked back in the days where medicine was not easy to get they used home remedies to heal themselves. I decided with her information on natural remedies to buy this book. I was happy I did. Lets stop making the Pharmacy and doctors rich. Lets do what they did in the old days... and save our lifes.
