Superior Vocal Health

Superior Vocal HealthAbsolutely amazing book. Finally a user guide for vocal health that's simple and not a science text book. Very easy to read and understand. Very applicable. Superior vocal health doesn't just affect the voice, it affects the whole body physically, mentally, and emotionally. A must have for any serious singer!

Admittedly, this is more of a reference tool than it is a "read from beginning to end" type book. However, David's story on why he came upon the world of herbs and natural remedies for the voice reads just like a movie script. His journey to healthier living and how it benefited his voice his passion is a story all singers can identify with.

No fluff in this book. Every page is jam packed with "not so secret" herbs and teas that WILL make all the difference for the vocalist. No climbing to the top of some remote peak in the Andes to find the herb that will heal a sore throat. All the herbs are accessible and explained in great detail.

I'm crazy about this book. I carry it with me everywhere I go and refer to it constantly.

Vocal health has always been one of my main priorities as a vocalist. So this book was great to read. Vocalists, speakers or anyone who relies on their voice to survive do really need to read this book. What you put in your body is going to affect your voice. I've lived with reflux for most of my life so I know the kinds of problems you can have with your voice if certain foods do not agree with you. This book is filled so many herbs that one person will probably not even use all of them. You'll have to experiment with what works with you personally. I've used a few of them which some don't work and some do. If you struggle with allergies, colds, sinus issues then you'll find specific herbs for these problems. A great thing about this book it also contains a list of OTC and prescription drugs that will cause vocal issues. I personally don't take medications unless absolutely necessary.

Also there's a couple lists of food supplements and foods that are beneficial. And again some of those may not work for everyone.

It covers the importance of keeping your body at a proper alkaline/acidic balance. I tend to stay on a very alkaline diet so that's not a problem for me. There's a list of alkaline and acidic foods included.

This is a book you'll want to keep with you on the road if you're a touring singer. Great reference to have.

Injury Afoot: 30 Things You Can Do to Relieve Heel Pain and Speed Healing of Plantar Fasciitis

Injury Afoot: 30 Things You Can Do to Relieve Heel Pain and Speed Healing of Plantar FasciitisWell this is a great resource for one of the most vexing running injuries I have ever had. The information contained here will definatly help put anyone on the road,(the long road) to recovery. I know many non-runners who work on their feet, teachers, nurses even coaches and non-atheletes who would beneifet from this text, in its entireity.

I also recommend more the book, "The 5 Mintue Plantar Fasciitis Cure", which is more to the salient point of the singular componet of relief.

Please note WHATEVER you do or try you MUST BE VIGILANT in your approach, this injury requies long term rehab, 6 months to life would be about right.

Matt

This book gives you many things you can do to relief Plantar Fasciitis.

You can do many, or you can do only a few, but you have to do something to get rid of it.

I also read "The 5 minute Plantar Fasciitis Solution", which in my opinion is the key to successfully get over the heel pain. I have tried many things but the one that really feels to be helping is the 5-min Solution.

UPDATE (Feb/12/2012):

In my pursue of getting rid of the pain, I still continued to play basketball, and training my calves to be in better shape for a championship I'm in.

Have to clearly state that it helped a lot. So I believe now the writer is absolutely right in his recommendations.

After I train my calves with weight training (in a gym), I can barely feel any pain on the same day and days after. In the same way after playing a basketball game, the pain is gone. So the strength training is a MUST for anybody who suffers from plantar fasciitis.

If you have recently been diagnosed or think you have PF, then this is an excellent resource that consolidates a ton of the information, guidance and reality of this vexing problem. I have been dealing with PF for over a year now and have gone through PT, doctors and podiatrists to aid in my recovery thus, none of the information in this book was new to me. I have spent many hours researching PF prior to seeking medical advice.

I wished the book contained more information about products the author recommends for (at least some of) the 30 points of relief. I can appreciate that listing products dates a publication but at least it gives you a starting point of self-help remedies when you're 'new' the heel and PF problems.

I deducted one star because I think it's over-priced. The book is a quick read and good reference though.

This book has good information in it but if you have a computer and can search with skill most of it has been read. This gives good information for learning to deal with PF. The only thing that has really helped me is buying a pair of MBT shoes. IMMEDIATELY my heel pain was alleviated and I could walk with no pain for extended periods of time. It has helped with the pain when I am at rest also. I do not have the searing pain while sitting at the desk or getting up and walking. By all means, read the book to learn about the injury and therapies but invest in a pair of MBT shoes. You won't regret it.

After pulling the connective tissue on my heel while trying to recover from plantar fasciitis, I ordered "Injury Afoot". The book, written by a fasciitis sufferer, helped me understand my problem, what I need to do and why. I showed the book to my podiatrist, who approved of the advice given. He does not have the time to devote during a short appointment, so the book filled in the blanks. I am now on my way to healing, thanks to this book.

Uninformed Consent : The Hidden Dangers in Dental Care

Uninformed Consent : The Hidden Dangers in Dental CareA great book written by two very intelligent and "open minded" doctors. Dr. Thomas Levy's story lead me to taking a more pro-active position with my dental revision. I already knew about the devastating effects of my "silver fillings" and I had some knowledge about root canals. However, his story took me to the next level of action...removal of my two root canals. And yes, just like Dr. Huggins and Dr. Levy mention in the book, they were infected and a source of slow and constant poisoning of my body. I owe the a debt of graditute for their courage to speak out about yet another atrosity in dentistry.

They also go into detail about many other sources of mercury...eye contact lens solution, contraceptives, vaccines, seafood, etc.

If you want to know why we are getting sicker and sicker in this country, then you need to read this book.

This book focuses in more detail on the issue of dental induced toxicity. The book is well written and an absolute must for anyone suffering from any vague, unresponsive illness. This book also sends shock-waves through the standard medical dogma of what constitutes "incurables," in that case after case of serious medical diseases were reversed after removing mercury amalgams from patient's mouths. The book is co-written by a physician, who's own health benefits were revealed after he underwent dental detox. His account will amaze the nay-sayers and awaken the nearly dead from mercury toxicity. I am a suffering, long-term toxic reader, and I saw myself in every painful agonizing detail of mercury's wretched effect on once healthy tissue. I have undergone surgery because of its twisted devastating blows, and am certain the grim reaper was riding mercury's coattails. Even if you don't believe that you're being bombarded with deadly poison while reclining in the dentist's chair, read the book. You may save the life of someone you love, maybe even yourself.

Buy Uninformed Consent : The Hidden Dangers in Dental Care Now

Something I did not know (and which the authors expose) is that dentists as a professsion have the highest suicide rate. It is because, they argue convincingly, dentists spend decades dealing with mercury, a deadly neuro-toxin, which collects in their brains. Although they don't comment on it, this is where the old expression, "Mad as a hatter" came from: in the past hatters became insane because they used mercury in their job. The average dental amalgam is 50% mercury: this is the poison the ADA claims is safe and allows dentists to place inches from peoples' brains? Europe is far ahead of us in this regard; mercury fillings are now illegal. The list of diseases improved or cured by removal of fillings is astonishing. The authors list case after case. Schopenhauer made the comment that ideas are first ridiculed, then violently opposed, then accepted as self-evident. I wonder how many years it will take before the dangers of these fillings will be accepted as self-evident.

Dr. Huggins graduated from the University of Nebraska School of Dentistry in 1962 and received a master of science degree from the University of Colorado in 1989. He is no quack, he is a crusader for health.

There is abundant scientific evidence that amalgam fillings are a danger to health. Dental amalgam is 50% mercury. Mercury is the most toxic metal known to man. Just look at the information from The International Academy of Oral Medicine & Toxicology at .

Also consider that the Swedish Dental Material Commission recommended that amalgam be banned in 2002 download the report from . They commented that "The use of amalgam has been identified as the single largest source of mercury in sewage sludge, and crematoria are a large source of emissions to air in Sweden.". So how the hell does mercury get into people's faeces without passing through the body first ?

Dentists who deny that amalgam is harmful are either ignoramuses or liars it's really that simple. They lie because they do not want to get served with class action lawsuits from all the people made sick from their amalgam fillings. That's the same reason why the governments stand by the dentists (Sweden excepted).

This is written particularly in response to Kavity Killer's party-line review of this book:

I have been directly involved in clinical dentistry for over 40 years. Quackwatch is full of beans on this matter, as they are on many other issues as well. They are backed by the AMA and ADA, etc, so know that there are a lot of god-like egos on the line here. Many mistakes have been made by AMA/ADA members and to be exposed would be a huge loss of face, not to mention the astronomical costs of potential litigation and case settlements. They do NOT want to go there! Sadly, our cultural worship of material success has led to a level of greed that trumps the oath to "First do no harm." It didn't just happen over-night. The AMA/ADA has been in bed with the Pharmeceutical industry for at least 50 years. The trickle-down effect this had on individual doctors and dentists was slower in developing, but has seriously infiltrated the general ranks in medical and dental schools, and private practices over the past 20-25 years. Many health professionals DO continue to fight this trend, but Pharma has enormous financial resources [ie, power] and the greed-based commercialization of US Healthcare is the result we all suffer. The problems are insidious as in many instances, Pharma susidizes entire hospitals, medical schools, and research programs, as well as many of the doctors who write medical textbooks. Consequently, their own products and protocols become the de facto treatments that all health professionals learn before they ever even see their first patients! Not to mention Pharma's infiltration into the FDA, with the subsequent "fast-tracking" of questionable drugs into the marketplace and into our bodies. I could go on and on with my insider's view of this but I am getting off-track on the subject of this book. So, moving on...

Please. Read this book if you want to get a more realistic idea of what all the brain-washed dentists and doctors DON'T want you to know. Also, understand that most of them are basically good people, but facing the real mistakes they have made as a result of their commercial indoctrination is overwhelming... emotionally, it is a very bitter pill to swallow. There is a strong element of betrayal and shame in this situation, and doctors and dentists are not going to be quick in accepting responsibility for the harm they've done when they realize that their own lack of due diligence [and disinterest] has made them culpable...and not merely victims or pawns of the "machine."

I have seen all of this up close and personal with numerous dentists. Dentists/doctors have also become accustomed--obviously--to a certain lifestyle as well as the respect their professions have brought them. Tie that in with the pressure of their spouses and children, who expect that privileged lifestyle to continue. Their identities have become completely entwined with their public images within their communities and with their peers. They [can] feel quite fearful and threatened by exposes such as this book and then do nothing except try to push it all under the rug. Of course, at this point the shame only increases because NOW they are knowingly doing treatments that cause harm! They [can] become defensive and even belligerent in continuing to do root canals or prescribing toxic fluoride, all in an impotent effort to PRETEND it isn't so! This is not to say that every dentist or doctor would react in this way, but the situation does create a form of psychological stress which even highly-trained "professionals" are NOT equipped to handle...without considerable professional help. Altogether, a very complex conundrum!

For those dentists and doctors who are not so exclusively identified with their job titles and professional egos, the road ahead is much simpler. They willingly take responsibility and do their own research into these very real medical issues, as did Drs Weston Price, George Meinig, and Hal Huggins, etc.

Our entire Healthcare system is in a serious crisis, and it is a crisis which impacts every single one of us. We all need to support radical reforms. "Privatization" is NOT the solution. Big Pharma can quietly buy out and incorporate any such ventures into its own greed-based game plan. In this situation, we need our Government to actually govern...to drop all partisan posturing and actually make use of its size to break the hold these monster corporations have on the people and soul of this country. In such an environment, the kind of valuable research that was done in "Uninformed Consent" or "Root Canal Cover-up" could be conducted with respect and support, rather than with accusations of quackery that are intended only to silence those who question the staus quo!

Sheesh!...hadn't intended to start waving the flag or anything...just thought I would say a few things to show the actual value of books like this one. I didn't know it was all going to strike such a "nerve"...ha-ha. In any case, critical transformations like those mentioned in this review will take time and the efforts of a population far less divided than we are now...or as conflicted as those dentists and doctors I've referred to above. Good luck to us.

I hope a few folks find this rambling "essay" to be useful in some way ;-)

The Sivananda Companion to Yoga: A Complete Guide to the Physical Postures, Breathing Exercises, Die

The Sivananda Companion to Yoga: A Complete Guide to the Physical Postures, Breathing Exercises, Diet, Relaxation, and Meditation Techniques of YogaTo my mind Sivananda is the perfect type of yoga-just the right mix of spirituality, workout, stretching and relaxation all in one. I always feel fantastic afterwards! So when I moved and couldn't find a class in my area, I really missed it. Tried Ashtanga--too many pushups! Iyengar...so much time on alignment and never broke a sweat! Gym yoga class...how do they even call this yoga? So I got this book, and it basically took me right back to the classes I used to take at the Sivananda center on 24th St., minus the chanting and a few of the variations. I use it all the time. The poses are explained well, especially if you have practiced them in a class before, with lots of diagrams and pictures and they include plenty of variations. The quick reference chart is great to remind you what order things go in or if you just want a quick half-hour session. Also good advice on diet and meditation and yoga in general. Definitely worth it for me...it's one exercise book I actually use!

This is the most well rounded and authentic book on yoga i have ever seen. The pictures in it are bright and lively. and the discriptions are short and to the point. it includes many handy variations and even a practice chart to keep your yoga practice continual. and unlike other yoga books this book includes not just the postures but the vital breathing and relaxation exercises along with a food guide. I was actually forced to buy it for the teacher training i'm going to and i'm more than glad i have it!

I received this book as a gift after I had been diagnosed with fibromyalga.I had already been practicing for a few years, but this book enabled me to depen my practice. I have since been certified to teach through the Sivananda Vedanta Yoga Centers. I love this book I come back to it again and again. It is complete in its approach. There is not too much to overwhelm the beginner, but enough substance for advanced yogi or yogini. As yoga sweeps through the West with a heavy emphasis on the asanas, this book offers ways to bring all aspects of yoga to your life. My husband uses to book for his practice and we have bought it for other family members. Om Shanti

The Resistance Band Workout Book

The Resistance Band Workout BookI didn't buy this through Amazon. But I thought it was a great book. Many more uses for the band than most books. It discusses stretching, rest periods for the muscles, etc. It is divided into groups of exercises for each of the major muscle groups. Off-hand, I can recall it has exercises for arms, shoulders, chest, trunk and abs, legs, hips, thighs and buttocks. That's great for targetting. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because the workouts in the back don't refer to the page the exercise is on so I constantly have to go back to look for them and then do them. I still haven't found one of them yet, lol. But all in all, it did have more excersises for the bands for each muscle group than any of the other books I have so far.

I would've given this 3 1/2 stars although that is not an option (so i rounded up). First let me state that I think this is a great book. The writers provide excellent information and pictures so that a user can do the exercises with ease. They also provide good information to help the user to try to create a program that will help them fulfill their needs.

There were a couple of things that I think the author could've improved upon. First, as another reviewer mentioned, they do not tell you the page numbers of the exercises in the end of the book (program section). When creating your program, it takes 3x as long to look up each individual exercise. Second, I did not like that they did not include what muscle (s) or groups were being worked out in each exercise. Granted the writers put the exercises under vague headings like Chest, arm, legs, etc. but they do not tell you specifics like biceps, traps, rear delts... like every other exercise book does. Lastly, I think the writers should have had several sample exercise plans that each cater to one's specific goals.

If they revise this book and incorporate some of these suggestions, then this book would definitely be 5 stars.

Stronger After Stroke, Second Edition

Stronger After Stroke, Second EditionI can't say enough about how Stronger After Stroke has influenced my life after my stroke four years ago. This isn't just a book about stroke recovery. It is stroke recovery in microcosm, an essential part no less important than any activity you'll ever do or piece of equipment you'll ever have. Every stroke and every stroke victim is different, but each stroke victim can come away from this book understanding what stroke recovery is, able to tailor their own unique start point for recovery or able to carry recovery on through to completion once begun. Only some of the highlights I've gleaned are:

Recovery is hard work. That's the overriding theme of this book and the author hammers away at it relentlessly, using such phrases as "Challenge Equals Recovery" and "Push the Issue" He understands far more than anybody else what stroke recovery really means and what it requires. I was in the Army infantry and involved in sports all my life, but recovery is the very toughest thing I've ever done. Beginning stroke recoverers need to be prepared for what's coming and informed that anything less than full commitment is really just a waste of time. Stronger After Stroke does that, and that alone is a crucial service.

Background concepts and latest research findings. Neuroplasticity is the foundation behind stroke recovery and its effect on the medical and scientific worlds is nothing less than revolutionary. The author explains neuroplasticity clearly and completely, interspersing examples of it throughout the text along with many other vital concepts such as synergistic movement, spasticity, learned nonuse and the 4 phases of recovery. The reading may flow easily but you'll come away with a comprehensive understanding of stroke recovery thinking and terminology. Also, here is where the major revisions of this new 2nd Edition really make a difference over the 1st Edition. Thanks to neuroplasticity stroke recovery is changing fast, but Stronger After Stroke has been thoroughly updated to relay new findings and take advantage of incoming developments.

New therapies, new methods, new equipment. There's so many. Stronger After Stroke covers mirror therapy, induced constraint therapy, mental practice, virtual reality, electrical stimulation, bilateral training, music and rhythm, gyms and home set-ups, a ton of equipment and the list goes on. The value of this material to me is its usefulness as a reference guide. Stroke recovery is so complex and so long with so many pitfalls, twists and turns you'll be returning to this information time and again for new ideas and suggestions. Believe me, recovery is above all else sheer monotony and mind-numbing repetition. Your program must stay fresh and varied to keep it going (see the section on "Therapy Soup: Mix and Match"). Again, the newness of the 2nd Edition really helps. With the new "Get Your Hand Back" section my hand is once again showing noticeable improvement.

Safety. Take it from this bull-headed idiot personally, this is the Stronger After Stroke subject you should consciously elevate to the top of your priority list, as emphasized by the author repeatedly. I didn't and learned the hard way that while mind-blowing agony from injury is great for increasing body sensation, recovery stops cold, and it really stops if you're dead. There's a "What Precautions Should Be Taken" part in every section, as well as a full chapter on "Safeguarding the Recovery Investment" and individual safety tips throughout where appropriate.

Strategy and tips for recovery. Stronger After Stroke provides an invaluable and endless array of ways to plan, individualize, and most important, maintain your recovery program. Task-specific training, for one example, will make it meaningful, measuring your progess will evaluate it, the recovery calendar will structure it and the stages of recovery glimpses its future. Eating habits, sleeping habits, lifestyle, work schedule and a myriad of other details are all examined for their impact on recovery and how best to blend them into your program. All of this matters; exactly how much you make it matter will determine exactly how well you recover (the author calls this "Living Recovery")

Although Stronger After Stroke is fantastic as a reference, it is an integrated whole. It really is a complete map for a successful journey of recovery and, as such, no aspect of it can be readily ignored. Miss something and that may become the point where your recovery stumbles or dead-ends. Here I would like to urge readers to pay special thought and attention to two sections I think fundamental to recovery, the chapter "Motivation: The Recovery Fuel" and the section "Keep the Core Values Close". This is unbelievably essential stuff.

There's so much more, but I have one more comment. Back in the those first dark days of life as a stroke victim Stronger After Stroke gave me hope when nobody and nothing else did. My own doctors and therapists had me relegated to a wheelchair the rest of my life, and they did it with all the nonchalance and carelessness of a remark on today's weather. Those were the people I entrusted my life to. But this book told me I was in charge of my own recovery, that the way my life went now was my responsibility. It would take an unbelievable amount of hard work but I could do it. It was all up to me. I took that message and held onto it for dear life. I'll never let it go.

The results? Four years that seemed so long at times are now gone and I walk normally now, albeit only a few dozen yards at a time. That will improve with time and effort. By the end of the year I fully expect to walk along our beautiful redwood trails and sandy beaches just as I would have before that fateful day in June, 2009. I'll begin running. My arm is at full strength and I can draw again, crudely. I owe all this, my recovery, to one book and its author, Peter G. Levine. I cannot thank him enough.

In January 2010 I had a brain abscess. Twelve months later, after a cursory exam, the doctor who had been assigned to me announced "Well, let's see what neuroplasticity does." In other word, you're at the end of the line (the traditional 12 months) and nothing else can be done with you. But even I knew that somehow you had to prime the neurological pump, so to speak. It just didn't happen on its own. I canceled my next appointment with her and referred to her as "Dr. Donothing."

Initially, I looked for information on brain abscesses, but discovered very little that I could understand or was helpful. I realized that the symptoms were very similar, if not identical, to stroke. So I made believe that I had had a stroke. The literature was more abundant, but filled with strategies on how to adapt to your new condition. I didn't want to adapt.

Then I encountered "Stronger after Stroke". The message was simple and not sugar coated. Basically, repetitive action and massed practice and six to eight hours of exercise each day. The book was filled with helpful techniques and strategies. I became obsessed with it.

When I left Dr. Donothing's office I had a "chicken wing" right arm. I couldn't raise it above my shoulder and I couldn't stretch it out. Now I use my affected hand and arm to retrieve and return items to the kitchen cabinets. I shampoo my hair with my affected arm only, and so forth. I now have essentially full range of motion.

Recently, I saw a neurologist who gave me a complete neurological exam. She reviewed Dr. Donothing's final evaluation. She was floored by the progress I had made. This book has changed my life. I'm not exaggerating. There is still work to do, but I feel very hopeful. And that what this book also gives you. Hope.

I didn't think Pete Levine could improve his first book, but I love what he has added to this revised edition!! So many doctors tell stroke survivors we get about all we're going to get back in 6-12 months, which is not true! Levine begins this book explaining neuroplasticity. This book defines what's needed to drive neuroplasticity change. In other words, it tells survivors what we have to do for recovery! Pete talks about the super survivor who is motivated and willing to work hours every day, which is necessary for recovery. The brain needs repetition to reroute and it can take a long time BUT there is hope because our brains can reroute and change until the day we die. We aren't done unless we quit trying!! How motivating is that!! And the book filled with strategies of recovery in all areas. It is the most inclusive book I have ever read concerning strokes. Every survivor ( and doctor) should read this book. It's an easy read, includes a glossary, and offers information on what other helps are available. I am a survivor who has gotten almost full recovery by doing the constant repetitive tasks, working 6-7 hours every day, seven days a week for 27 months and it was worth every minute of it. Pete Levine has given us all the best advice you will ever get ,in this book and I thank God for people like him who have dedicated their lives to helping stroke survivors!!

The Smarter Science of Slim Workbook

The Smarter Science of Slim Workbook*****

The main book--The Smarter Science of Slim--is an amazing book by Jonathan Bailor about a healthy theory and practice of eating, exercising, and weight loss. THIS book--The Workbook--is one of two additional books that currently accompanies the main book--it is a summary of the main book's research and information and includes a 5-week tracking journal. It is a great way to keep organized and to follow your progress.

I would highly recommend buying the main book, and then if you want to have a handy summary as well as a tracking system to follow your progress, buy this one--the workbook--too.

There is a third book, called The Smarter Science of Slim Journal. That book a tracking diary to note day by day progress and impressions, like what is in this workbook, but longer, for 12 weeks. The journal doesn't include any summaries of the book; it's a journal only.

I have all three books: the main book, the journal, and the workbook, as I am adopting the Smarter Science of Slim as my way of eating and regaining my health. I highly recommend all three. I wrote this review so that everyone could know the difference between the books, as it can be hard to tell just from the descriptions.

Highly recommended.

*****

I read the original Smarter Science of Slim book and found it full of great information. While this one covers a lot of the same ground in summary, I also found the practical ways to apply the ideas week-by-week to be very helpful. However, I'm docking a star because the Kindle isn't the best delivery mechanism the workbook contains forms to be filled out, bubbles to be shaded in, etc., and you obviously can't do that on the Kindle version. I checked and the forms aren't available for download, so my only recourse is to purchase another (paper) title. Much as I like reading on my Kindle, I don't think this title suits itself for the format and should have probably been offered as paper only (or at least the limitations of the Kindle version spelled out).

I have read the book "The Smarter Science of Slim" and reviewed it on November 3, 2011. I thought it was a great book and decided to take a look at the workbook, too.

The Workbook continues with a lot of good information. I especially liked Part 1 Recapping Research

I really like this chapter because when I read the book, I kept turning down pages so I could refer back to charts or specific data on these pages at a later time. This part of the workbook has essentially taken much of my turned down pages in the main book and put them in a place that I can easily refer back to. With turned down pages and no easy way to bookmark what is on a turned down page, it takes a while to go back and find specific tables or text in the book. The workbook summary pages make this a breeze. So, I would buy the workbook just for this summary if nothing else.

I also like the exercise diagrams. This is the kind of info a trainer would give you if you belonged to a gym. I have a home gym and already own a lot of the equipment that is used for the illustrations. So, that data is like having a trainer come to my home and give me the proper instructions for using the stuff. Some people who go to gyms don't want to pay for a trainer, and so they fool around on the equipment and probably not use it properly. This is like a jump start to working out properly.

Part 2 Smarter Psychology

The sentence completion exercises are interesting. I can see where they would help you to program your subconscious mind for success.

Part 3 Reset Setpoint

The serving size info in Chapter 13 is great. A lot of people have no clue what a serving size of many foods are so this is the kind of data you would like to have close to the fridge. It would be nice if the workbook had a tear-out card that you could stick on the fridge door with a magnet. I don't know if people stick stuff on their refrigerator doors any more, but ours is covered with stuff notes, pictures of the grandchildren, grocery lists, etc. A card on the door with reminders of serving sizes would remind me about mindless munching.

The chapters after this get into journaling. I have never been a journaling person. I know a lot of people do it and it is a good way to chart progress towards a goal. But I guess I am not the kind of person who wants to spend so much time keeping a journal. So, this area is not a real big thing with me. However, the way the workbook is laid out is excellent for anyone who wants to do it. Anyone who has never kept a journal has everything they need to get started with keeping a journal and be successful. The workbook makes it pretty painless and a person couldn't help but do it properly to get the results they are after.

I like the charts in Chapter 19. I definitely want to become a HOT FITNESS MODEL Ha..ha.. But I guess I would settle for just FIT. The HOT and MODEL tags would never get stuck on me. I could see these charts on cardboard stock and stuck on the fridge, too. Just as a reminder that I want to stay on the RIGHT Side of the chart and not on the LEFT side.

The workbook goes well with the book and provides good summaries of the data and charts that are detailed in the book itself. You really need to read the book first and then all the data in the workbook makes a lot more sense because you can understand where the information came from and the logic behind the summaries.

I'm an aficionado of books that offer scientific support for eating in a way that supports health, and this is the holy grail. It's written very clearly and somehow makes the concept of eating this way very easy to understand, and lacks any of the preachy quality that some authors employ.

I've been tweaking my diet for a little over a year and putting the principles outlined in this book into practice have helped me bust through the plateau I'd been on for a couple of months.

Eating this way makes me feel full, satisfied, and it quelled the savage beast that looks for more and more at the end of the day. I've lost some 14 pounds and 2 inches around my waist since reading this book and using his suggestions. This feels like something I can follow forever. I highly recommend this book.

The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding: Seventh Revised Edition (La Leche League International Book)

The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding: Seventh Revised EditionI had a much older edition of this book when I was pregnant with my first child almost 10 years ago and I read it and countless other pregnancy, breastfeeding and parenting books. I passed along the older version to a pregnant friend after the birth of my youngest in 2002; I thought I knew all I needed to know after successfully breastfeeding my first and continuing to breastfeed my youngest. Some recent problems led me to borrow the new 7th Revised Edition from a LLL meeting and I wish I had a newer edition before my second son was born. I learned so much about recent scientific discoveries about breastfeeding and the healthful properties of human milk. I could have avoided alot of heartbreak and anxiety in the hospital if I'd known all this and read it prior to his birth. The hospital was not very friendly to breastfeeding and if I had not already had the positive experience with my first son, I probably would have let them convince me of the need for bottles. As it was, we had a very difficult time in the first few weeks, which could have been avoided with the knowledge and information contained in this book. I urge you to read it, especially if you are considering nursing. And even if you plan to feed your baby formula, it may change your mind! And bring it with you to the hospital to use as a resource and to back up your requests to nurses to NOT give your baby sugar water, formula or a pacifier. The scientific information and references provided should give you all the support you need.

I breastfed all three of my children well into toddlerhood and was very active in LLL for several years. This book does have helpful information, but if you don't completely subscribe to LLL's basic philosophy (breastfeeding on demand until the child chooses to wean, having no scheduled separations from the child because then you might not be available for nursing at the exact moment the child wanted to, a very limited role for fathers, etc.), the book will seem judgmental. In addition, the book often does not seem sympathetic to mothers who face what seem like overwhelming problems. Their assurances that you can work things out no matter what can be guilt inducing rather than helpful. Actually talking to LLL leaders can be great--I've gotten some wonderful help from some. On the other hand, I've know others who were either not knowlegable enough to be helpful, gave too much information, or who were jugmental and unsupportive of mothers who made choices they didn't like (such as working outside the home). One cannot be an LLL leader if one has had scheduled separations from baby (like working), so many leaders have strong feelings about how you should parent, and their personal feelings can get inthe way of being helpful to moms who work, want to wean, have to go on a trip without the baby, etc. In the book itself, I also find that the use of "he" to refer to all children is annoying--they say it's for clarity because the mom is always "she," but in the chapter on dads, they still refer to babies as he, and somehow the references are still clear. LLL has a tendency to put women in the secondary position of fulfilling their womanliness solely by serving the needs of others. I think The Nursing Mother's Companion is a better book for the nursing mom. It's helpful and practical, and while the author is very pro-breastfeeding, you don't feel like there's a hidden agenda lurking beneath the advice. The non-breastfeeding oriented decisions you make about how to run your life and family don't really enter into the discussion, while in LLL's book, these other issues are front and center. If you don't want a whole life philosophy along with breastfeeding advice, The Nursing Mother's Companion is a better book.

This book really helped me through those weeks and I got the encouragement I needed. There are relatable stories and straight answers to questions you have about breastfeeding. I found this to be an invaluable resource!

I've read the reviews on this book and La Leche League stating that somehow, La Leche Leage (LLL)and this book can make one feel inadequate or less womanly if problems with breastfeeding lead to supplementing with formula. My experience has found this to be very untrue.

I attended my first LLL meeting while I was pregnant with my first child. I found the people to be very friendly and they went out of their way to answer all of my questions about becoming a new mom and breastfeeding. I contuniued these meetings for the wonderful support and education throughout my pregnancy. I also hired a Lactation Consultant to help with breastfeeding once the baby was born.

Unfortunatly,I ended up with a c-section. I was unable to see my daughter for almost 4 hours after the surgery. When I did finally meet her, she was very drowsy from the epidural and would not latch for over 24 hours. My daughter was born on a Friday night, and the hospital's Lactation Consultant was "off" for the weekend!!! It was the wonderful women I met at the LLL meetings that I called for help. They were so helpful and did not judge me for having difficulty. Also, the book was VERY helpful in answering all of the MANY questions that arose once my child was brought to me. I especially loved the chapter that addresses concerns about breastfeeding after a c-section. Many of the nurses and, suprisingly, the physicians, suggested over and over that I supplement with formula, when really all I needed was a breastpump!!! I had to request a breastpump 3 times before it was brought to me. Without the support of the LLL and the book, I would have gone along with the nurses and Doctors and my daughter & I would have missed out on all the benefits of breastfeeding.

In short, I have not found this book or LLL to be judgmental of mothers who have difficulty with breastfeeding and end up supplementing with formula, rather, what I have found is just pure frustration that mothers are robbed of the opportunity to experience all the benefits of breastfeeding by being pushed into supplementing at the fist sign of any difficulty. My experience has taught me that breastfeeding is an art and it is not always easy to master it, especially when you are mentally and physically exhausted from having a baby. LLL was there to SUPPORT me and my family in that time by providing education and assistance. Thanks to them I knew how important it was to get my baby the colostrum I was producing the first few days after she was born and I knew not to panic when there was very little of it coming out. So many of the moms I know are convinced to supplement or give up breastfeeding altogether because they are told or mistakenly think the don't have "enough milk" during this stage!!! I was so relieved that I was wiser due to the information I received from LLL and the book.

The first couple of weeks of breastfeeding were difficult, but with the help of my Lactation Consultant, LLL friends, and this book, my now 5 month old daughter is 100% breastfed and VERY happy, healthy and bonded to me (as I am to her!).

I can't say enough good things about this book and LLL. They helped me to become a caring, nurturing and confident mom! Also, there's a 1-800 number in the book that any mom can call and they will walk you through ANY breastfeeding problem!

This wonderful, factful book got me through the wee hours of the night when I thought nothing was going right. It gave truthful information rather than the fad stuff one hears from friends and Moms. The book helped making this part of child rearing a true joy. I am now giving a copy to my daughter to help her prepare for the care of my first grandchild.
