Hot (Sweaty) Mamas: Five Secrets to Life as a Fit Mom

Hot Mamas: Five Secrets to Life as a Fit MomIt gets 5 stars for getting me off the couch and training for my first 5 k! Anyone who knows me can tell you what an incredible feat that is. It's perfect for those of us who, in our minivans or mom-mobiles, drive by those joggers in their matching outfits and spandex and feel intimidated.

This is an incredible book; inspiring and entertaining without being pushy and judgmental.

As a (previously) non exercising mother I liked how it read. At some points it almost felt like they were in my living room talking about my piles of laundry stacking up and my kids running around. At one point they compared squeezing exercise into your day to squeezing that last box of waffles into the freezer after doing groceries. Who can't relate to that?

It encourages you to " treat your body as well as you treat your kids" .

It's a good, easy read and has some great advice.

The mom to mom quotes also gives you a sense of camaraderie. Ladies, we are not in this alone!!!!

I like the authors' practical approach to being a Fit Mom. The book includes suggestions for fitting workouts into family life as well as tips for handling spouses who may or may not support your athletic endeavors. I like the Mom2Mom sections where real moms 'fess up to some of the crazy things they've done in the name of post-natal exercise. (anyone else used your baby as a dumbell?)

The authors acknowledge the fact that some advice is just tired. "Work out while the baby sleeps" assumes that your baby will always sleep! Instead, the book offers suggestions for exercising with the baby and guilt-free motivation for leaving baby at home while you run, bike, swim etc.

When Can I Go Home?

When Can I Go Home? How often has illness in oneself inspired action rather than revolt? "When Can I Go Home?" by Joseph J. Sivak is a prime example of just that scenario. Having had to take the reins of running a household and caring for an afflicted parent at the tender age of seventeen, Joseph had to grow up rather quickly. He witnessed firsthand the havoc that Alzheimer's can wreak on the mind of one he held very close to his heart....his own mother. Seeing the disease up close and personal moved this young man so deeply, he chose a career path that would not only put him in contact with this and other ailments like it for the rest of his days, but also offer the chance to help lessen its effects for future "victims"; he became a doctor.

This is a firsthand account of the disease that is Alzheimer's and its debilitating effects on the patient as well as they're family. This is also a story of hope and proactive action to help others goings through similar situations reach a better understanding of what is happening and ways in which to cope. Recommended reading for people in both situations as a reminder that they are not alone in their fight.....

Author: Joseph J. Sivak M.D.

ISBN: 978-0-615-31489-1

Publisher: Niagara Press

Joseph J. Sivak's When Can I Go home is an exceptional memoir written with abundance of warmth and dramatic power that will keep you continually captivated until its final chapter. It is a far cry from the many mundane books concerning Alzheimer's disease, as it avoids dwelling on the technical aspects of this dreaded and incurable disease. Rather, it presents a poignant narrative of the author's agonizing journey as a caregiver at the age of seventeen, when his sixty-two year old mother was diagnosed in 1979 with Alzheimer's-an era when most people never even heard of the disease.

Dr. Sivak points out the parent-child roles were reversedit all seemed surreal. It was as if his life was de-railed from the one he had planned to travel as a teenager. He was picked off his own train tracks and placed into a new setting. He states: "The confusing emotions associated with caring for my mother seemed to tear me into different pieces. Part of me was the child wanting his mother, part was angry and trapped and just wanted to grow up, while another part was the emerging compassionate caregiver." In passing, his mother's diagnosis occurred one year after he had lost his father, making it even more difficult for him to accept and process. Nonetheless, he managed to continue to move on, and his experiences would eventually serve as a touchstone when he became a Psychiatrist, later in life. His anger, frustration and eventual helplessness that emerged from feeling trapped were paired together with and perhaps partially alleviated by his emerging compassion and his development of his personality into that of a caregiver. He recounts that his chosen profession as a psychiatrist and the work he does everyday became a benchmark and symbol for the development and refinement of his compassion. As a side note, Dr. Sivak mentions that ironically the very thing that disciplined him and spurred him to work hard during his pre-med student days and subsequent acceptance into medical school was his mother's illness. And his acting as a caregiver to his mother, which he describes as his principal extracurricular activity, probably turned the tide in his favor in being accepted into medical school over many other well-qualified students.

Interwoven into this extraordinary book is Dr. Sivak's professional experiences as a psychiatrist concerning individuals confronted with Alzheimer's disease, either as a patient or caregiver. He reminds us that it is not an easy task to walk the line of educator, mentor, advocate and guide. Brought to light are the multitude of sticky and demanding issues that physicians face when making a diagnosis of Alzheimer. As he spells out, it is essential to know, provide, translate and break down all the data patients share with you, what they need and want. And in the final analysis help them decide what is in their best interest. Many times there exists a high emotional level of family members when they are informed that a loved one has this incurable disease, frequently leading to displaced anger on the physician. Another challenge is that physicians must be very cautious not to say the wrong thing or say the right thing in the wrong way. As clarified: "Such concepts as giving up driving entering a nursing home, and even making a possible diagnosis must be approached gingerly. Every patient and every family possesses and handles information differently."

When Can I Go Home is an emotionally charged and unique moving journey, wherein the author narrates a finely tuned story in a voice that blends two perspectives; one that portrays a young lad burdened with the task of caring for his mother with an incurable disease, the other, this same individual, acting as a physician called upon to treat countless victims of Alzheimer's, as well as other mental diseases.

Perhaps, someday this disease will be conquered. Until then, and as Dr. Sivak elegantly summarizes, "if you are caring for a loved one with the disorder, then love them, and love them more each day, as if they were your infant or child. No one deserves this illness, no family deserves the devastation." Just as we are human beings with emotions and spirits, so are your loved ones, even though they may be afflicted by Alzheimer's.

He has taught and lectured in the USA and elsewhere in the areas of Post Traumatic Street Disorder, Mood disorders, and chronic suicidal ideation. Joseph J. Sivak creates a powerful book "When Can I go Home." This book spoke to me on such a personal level. My grandmother has this awful disease and I have watched my Mother struggle to help her. The question she asks most often is "When Can I Go Home?" The topic and title immediately drew me in. Sivak is a strong writer that is able to convey emotion on a very strong level. This book is about a 17 year old boy who must not only accept his mother has this awful disease but he must be her caregiver as well. I felt so bad for him because I can't imagine how hard it would be to deal with the loss of your mother as you know her and care for this new confused person. The author shows the power of love through this caring son. This book also teaches a lot about the disease and contains medical perspectives and information. I highly suggest that anyone dealing with alzhimers pick up a copy of this book.

Moms are the people, we as children come to believe as "the rocks" of the home. They are the people who provide us the love, support and emotional salvation when we need it to take care of the problems of our youth. What happens when this is taken from you as a teenager and the other family members around are too clinical to remind themselves what it was like to be a kid again? Not everything can be written on a document and stated this is the way it will be and then move on to handle the outcome.

There has to be time for all the emotions to come through and a chance for them to be worked out. In this story "When Can I Go Home" by Joseph J. Sivak, who loses his father at the age of sixteen to find out his mother has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's at the age of seventeen can become a little overwhelming. Even if there are five other siblings in the family, he was still alone within himself and this struggle of trying to figure things out. This book is his journey, his thoughts, how he made it through and in the end his success story of how he found his way. This is not a book for the weak and it will make you think. There are so many people today that are in reversed roles, children taking care of their parents.

Knowing that you are not alone, having the knowledge of support centers and people to talk to are more available now than what was available in the past. You always hear that everyone has their own cross to bear, but when it is your mother, your father, your wife, your child or even a close loved one then you are also losing part of your support system to help you. I'm glad they author was able to share his story. Others will enjoy reading this man's journey as much as I did. I am sure today he is a much better doctor because of his experiences.

Alzheimer's can change everyone's life when it affects you personally and is living with you in your home taking over someone you love. Is it because we have to adapt to the person and how they are acting with the disease or is it because we feel that we have to learn and know so much about it so we can help the person affected so we can provide them everything they need? How can not affect everyone's childhood and living arrangements? Someone always has to be there to help provide coverage. Your duties are outlined and you are only a child. "When Can I Go Home?" by Joseph J. Sivak is a book that reveals his mother who suffers from Alzheimer's and how he has to help with her care. The author tells of his journey, he just loses his dad and a year later find himself in a care giver role at the age of seventeen when he should be figuring things out for himself. The underlying message I saw being in a similar situation was that this was a role that was preparing him for his future and was helping him figure it out, but it was the hard way. If you would like to read about a journey and all the pressure points and glory a family can hold through such a wicked disease then pick up this book. It will give you an unexpected perspective of how we cannot always control the things we want but do the best we can with what we have. This is a very good book and you will enjoy reading it.

The Complete Book of Massage

The Complete Book of MassageI found that this book has relatively good information, however, I found out most of this by myself. After reading through it once I already have most of the information memorized. This book is more the top layer of the muscle. I go to a choir college and a lot of the people here have deep knots in their shoulders and lower back. Trying to use this information does not help too much. Oh, don't get me wrong, there are several things in this book that I could use, although I might have to alter it a little. For someone that wants to go into massage therapy, I would suggest getting a few other books. I myself have purchased Art Riggs' Deep Tissue Massage book.

I would recommend this book for the people that just want to relax people for a short time. If however you would like to cause a deeper, longer lasting feeling of relaxation, purchase some other books. This book only provides the "icing on the cake" of massage.. I think. I sort of regret this buy, so think at least twice before buying.

This book is excellent and has every picture for every step and also shows you how to use oils, which types of strokes there are, and also talks a little about reflexology. It has all types of massage: Back, legs, arms, hands, shoulders, buttocks, stomach, and neck. Has massage for babies and pregnant women. Shows how to setup your own massage place and is excellent for beginners.

This is "the book" to have if you want to learn about giving massage. Show it also to your partner and if you're lucky you may get to experience the magic of massage without having to spend a fortune.

This book is for couples who want to give each other a sensual massage. First of all, try giving a full body massage sitting next to someone on a bed, your back and shoulders will hurt. If Maxwell-Hudson is so serious about massage, why doesn't she have them on a massage table, which is proper. This sounds like a book about foreplay or sensual massage, not therapeutic massage. Someone with therapeutic intentions or who wants to get out knots or kinks will not benefit from this book. Some of the positions photographed are sexually suggestive. There may be technical discussion in this book, but it is out of place. The featured bodies may be beautiful, but not draped properly. This is not for professionals and to title this work The Complete Book of Massage is misleading at best.

This is a somewhat clinical approach to what should be a really warm and personal subject. The author has a tendency to go on and on, burying us with minutia that we don't really need unless we are involved in massage professionally.

Offputting for the novice, hobyist or hedonist; might work better for the professional-level massage practitioner.

Brain, Heal Thyself: A Caregiver's New Approach to Recovery from Stroke, Aneurysm, And Traumatic Bra

Brain, Heal Thyself: A Caregiver's New Approach to Recovery from Stroke, Aneurysm, And Traumatic Brain InjuriesAnyone looking for inspiration dealing with a chronic illness or a brain injury...heck, anyone looking for just a darn good "read"... will find Siles' memoir of best friend Eve's aneurysm recovery fascinating and downright remarkable. Siles' direct, humorous, and brutally honest style draws the reader in from the first sentence. You'll find yourself nodding your head in agreement with her assessments of often contradictory medical thinking and cheering Eve on as she, under Siles' practical guidance, begins her remarkable recovery. If you doubt that belief in a higher power, a positive attitude, and dogged perserverance don't effect recovery, you're wrong. They're just as important as medical science and Siles and Eve prove it!

For anyone thrust without warning or experience into the role of caregiver for someone recovering from a brain injury or stroke, this book is a must-read. Ms. Siles easy style of writing brings you to tears with her down to earth honesty yet can also make you laugh as she describes the impishness of Eve as she begins her recovery. It gives hope to those who have been told their love one is destined to be a vegetable the rest of his/her life. Ms. Siles and Eve prove doctors don't always know best.

Ms. Siles has written one of the most inspiring books I've had the pleasure to read! Her story of a friend's recovery from brain injury, from a non-medical point of view, is fascinating, and will bring great hope to other care-givers and victims alike.

The most compelling aspect of this book is its honesty. It should be "required reading" for all doctors and patients who face stroke, aneurism, and brain injury.

I am a caregiver for someone recovering from a stroke so I read the second part of the book first, where Madonna takes Eve home and begins her common sense and using-everything-she-ever-learned-in-life approach to helping her friend recover. Every occupational therapist in America should be required to read this book. It's a great book, an easy read, by a wonderful, creative, funny, honest human being. Madonna will cause you to start thinking creatively about how you can help your loved one in your daily interactions with them. A must read for anyone helping someone recover emotionally and/or cognitively, because relating to them as if they are still a competent human being is vital for rebuilding their confidence to keep trying, and by continued trying they recover.(that's a bit of knowledge that our medical community has failed to pick up on)

I do not remember the excrutiating pain I was apparently in when I had my brain aneurysm. Nor do I recall my months of recovery in hospitals and the nursing home. But I am very grateful that my friend and caregiver never gave up on using her emotion-based approach to brain rehab. I typed the manuscript for Brain, Heal Thyself. I also proofread it. I believe all caregivers and stroke patients (who can read) SHOULD read Brain, Heal Thyself. This caregiving method saved my life. I give this book seven stars!

Planting the Future: Saving Our Medicinal Herbs

Planting the Future: Saving Our Medicinal HerbsPlanting the Future provides both motivation and instruction for saving medicinal plants. The public's growing realization of the healing potential of plants is positive, but over-harvesting has led to a decline in native stands of many plants. Rosemary Gladstar has gathered a stellar team of writers to address the issue. The index reads like a who's-who of the herbal world. More than 30 plants are addressed in individual articles written by herbalists who know and love them. A grower of any size can use the information, the backyard up to a large sanctuary. A gardener can find the plants best suited their area, as well as how to propagate and care for them. Once grown, there is information about the preparation and use of the plants. My own tiny urban medicinal garden is part of the effort to save valuable plants thanks to guidance from these leaders. Herbalists, native plant enthusiasts and conservationists will all find value in this book.

Planting The Future provides a different focus on the botanical market, featuring works by the herbalists of United plant Savers and discussing strategies to save and preserve medicinal herbs. Chapters provide an A-Z listing of herbs and their history, uses and propagation.

Juicing, Fasting, and Detoxing for Life: Unleash the Healing Power of Fresh Juices and Cleansing Die

Juicing, Fasting, and Detoxing for Life: Unleash the Healing Power of Fresh Juices and Cleansing DietsPerfect for : Personal Use

In a nutshell: This is a very well-thought-out book. We've been eating processed foods for so long, it is nice to know there is something we can do to help reverse some of the damage they are doing! There is a very strong message throughout the book, encouraging the reader to eat better by including more vegetables and fiber, and reducing red meat, sugar and highly processed foods. The authors have addressed all the main toxic areas in the body, providing helpful information on detoxing and fasting in order to heal and cleanse the body to become healthier. Each chapter includes facts pertinent to the subject, as well as supportive instructions. For cleanses, they include a sample menu with references to recipes within the book. Overall, it is easy to find information using the Index or chapter headings if you don't want to read the whole book.

Extended Review:

I was amazed to find a lot of information on Candida, a yeast-like health issue that one of my close relatives has suffered with for years. I immediately called my relative and read some of the book over the phone. She was so excited to hear what the book said, and can't wait to follow the cleansing suggestions to relieve the symptoms she has had for years! I can see how this book can be life-altering in a great and natural way!

Content: The content supports the book very nicely. It starts by talking about health, then explains the how's and why's of juicing, fasting and detoxing. The book then goes into the specifics of cleansing your colon, liver, gallbladder and kidney. It then progresses into more detox programs and cleansing yourself mentally and emotionally. In the final chapters the authors include information on the nutrient content in food, recipes to use while fasting and detoxing, and a nice resource guide.

Format: The chapters flow nicely, providing the reader with some great information. I was never confused while reading, but rather caught myself nodding several times in support of what was being explained. In addition to providing great information in each chapter, the authors have also provided some great guides on the nutrition of foods, recipes and resources as a wrap-up at the end of the book.

Readability: I found the book easy to read. The authors have presented factual and scientific information in a way that everyone can understand. The index is easy to use and helps the user find things quickly.

Overall: The book provides just about everything you need (except a juicer, vegetables/food, and supplements) to detox and cleanse your system in order to become healthier. I plan to try a lot of the cleanses and recipes in an effort to become healthier and more energetic!

Her other book "The juice lady's guide to juicing for health" is much better. This one really doesn't give much information and left me wanting to look for another book. When I found her other book, I wondered what the purpose of this one was.

Buy Juicing, Fasting, and Detoxing for Life: Unleash the Healing Power of Fresh Juices and Cleansing Die Now

Juicing, Fasting and Detoxing for Life encourages readers to not only eat well but to lead healthier lives. The book does focus primarily on eating well as a means to living a healthier life. Calbom does make a serious attempt to show the impact our dietary choices have on our bodies. The discussion does consider dioxins, refined sugars, processed flour and other foods that we encounter daily.

The chapters are well organized and logically structured. The sidebars are informative and do not detract from the main narrative. The introduction and first chapter discuss the value of healthy living and an overview of how to achieve it. The following chapters discuss juicing, fasting and detoxing (in that order). The next four chapters delve into cleansing and detoxing programs. The last two chapters are a nutrient guide and recipes.

While the overall message and conclusions resonate with holistic living and healthy eating, I feel that the scientific evidence presented is not completely representative of the relevant scientific literature. For example, the discussion on BPA (bisphenol A), an additive used in plastics, and the discussion of avoiding #7 plastic does not consider the current scientific debate on these issues (which include dosage levels, interspecie differences, natural ubiquity of these chemicals, etc) all of which seem to conclude that more work (especially long-term research) is needed. While our usage of dioxin has been increasing, dioxin levels in human milk and blood have been dropping steadily since the 1970s. Health Canada issued a report on BPA that cautioned its intake in large doses for children under the age of seven (the report resulted in more media-hype than scientific consideration).

Some readers may only be interested in the recipes. The ones that I tried were delicious, and easy to modify for personal taste. With a good juicer, they are easy to prepare (although not all recipes need a juicer). It is strange that the recipe for spinach-avocado soup or spinach power do not contain spinach. There is no explanation given for the omission, hence concluded that it is an oversight. Overall, it's a good book but needs a little more research and editing.

Armchair Interviews says: This book by a very prolific nutrition writer may interest people who focus on learning new techniques for good health.

I bought this book after reading a lot of comments on Amazon.com (I go there when I need to decide on which books to buy as Americans post a lot of comments, a pity the same ones are not posted on other Amazon sites). I was looking for a book about juice fasting and ended up buying the Juice fasting bible and this one because they seemed to have more positive comments than most. I found Juicing, Fasting and Detoxing for life an extremely useful book but it is all about detoxing, not my first priority, which was juice fasting, therefore the 4 stars and not 5. I do believe that I should do some detoxing only it is so very complicated.... I will start with some juice fasting and maybe one day I will be up to the detox. Cherie has a great writing style, which you don't often find among health writers and unlike journalists who write about these topics, she does know what she is talking about.

This book includes quite a few detox programmes like the Colon Cleansing, Liver, Gallbladder and Kidney cleansing and even a Mental and emotional cleansing. As far as the juice and soup recipes go I will try a few but I have to say that my husband and I find it very difficult to take the green juices. And some of the soups include milk, something I dislike profoundly. No matter how much healthier green juices may be we will stick to the recipes of The Juice fasting Bible which include some fruit and taste a lot nicer. What is the point of doing something extremely healthy which you hate and will eventually give up? Celery juice we find rather hard to drink, no matter how many other ingredients you mix with it, the taste and smell always seems to be very present.

If you are looking for a detoxing book I can really recommend this one, if juice fasting is your priority.... not really, you won't find any fasting in it or you have to consider the detox programme as a fast. One last thing, Cherie seems to use a centrifuge juicer something which amazed me because I thought that if you are really serious on juicing for your health you would recommend and use a masticating juicer. I own an Oscar but I would recommend you do a lot of research before buying one. They are not cheap and the Oscar has a few problems.

Cherie Calbom hit a home run with this book. She really explains the whole package when it comes to why and how you should do a juice fast or juicing for that matter. For the person who ever wondered if a juice fast or juicing is really worth the trouble should read this book. Her testimony is really moving and can really help the person trying to get back to feeling good and heal from health issues. If you or a loved one have health issues, this is a must read book for you. This program really works. My husband and I tried her recipes and now use at least one of them everyday. One day I had a stuffy nose and was irritated with sinus issues. I did her sinus juice and within about an hour or so, I was way better. Don't like radishes, but it definately worked. This woman knows what she is talking about. I looked for many books on juicing, and bought many, her juicing books are the best.

In 1909-13, wasp waists, pouter-pigeon bosoms, and large ornate hats were still the height of female fashion, and hems came just short of the floor. In 1915 the whole foot appeared, though still modestly encased in a button shoe. By 1916 ankles were on view, and in 1918 even Sears--always a bastion of mass taste and mores--was portraying its female models in skirts that showed the leg to mid-shin, overalls with full bloomer-like trousers, and one-piece bathing suits that displayed the arms and lower legs. These are just a few of the things this book will teach you about the dress of the second decade of the 20th century--women's, girls', men's, boys', small children's. The reproductions are clear and sharp, and most of the pages include descriptions and prices; unfortunately several that would have been improved by it don't, editor Olian having chosen not to include the "opposite page" or following one that provided them--"dainty waists" and women's bathrobes from 1919, "smart spring styles" from 1920, girls' dresses and coats from 1918, men's suits from 1915. Still, enough supporting detail is given that the lack of full-color reproduction isn't a terrible loss, and the book will provide a sound overview of both clothing and hair styles for its era.

As a Trade researcher they are excellent beginning tools for finding the era of a specific product I am researching at any one time. Once i get the feel for dating a specific product it enables me to move on to more specialised reference material. The prices are so good every design school or major brand should carry the series. Each season i always seek out new material for my library. Phillip Nutt

Perfume Zodiac

Perfume ZodiacWhen considering perfumes it behooves one to develop a global strategy to characterizing them and putting them in to categories from which one may develop a sense to taste and the ability to choose with some discrimination. Unfortunately very few people have the money to survey perfumes to any degree, much less to a degree which allows putting them in groupings for particular uses, mindsets, or occasions.

This book offers a good enough starting point your astrological sign. At first I flinched from this notion because I am not a believer in astrology. I am nothing like a Libra, no matter how my stars are aligned in whatever salient or tangent or whatever.

But this book is funny and charming. It doesn't really drill home astrology, it merely attempts to set perfumes to certain character traits. And those character traits are well enough compartmentalized by the ideas inherent in the `signs' that it's no great concern if you find yourself attracted to the perfumes of the Scorpio when you are in fact a Pisces.

In other books this author has demonstrated understanding and taste where it comes to perfumes. I trust the author again. The perfumes selected for my sign were without a doubt adequate, thoughtful, and harmonized. I suspect the same would be true of the other 11 sets of perfumes but that is of no matter.

Partial Seizure Disorders: Help for Patients and Families

Partial Seizure Disorders: Help for Patients and FamiliesAnyone whose life is significantly impacted by partial seizures, whether directly or indirectly, should own this book. This is the only book that I have come across that specifically addresses partial seizures (simple and complex), and as such it is tremendously valuable to parents, friends, family members, and people who have Epilpesy themselves. It seems that books on Epilepsy are either very cheap (and broad and shallow in scope) or extremely expensive (and bordering on encyclopedic), but this book falls nicely in the middle. It weighs in at a reasonable price and provides a wealth of information that an interested person might otherwise only find by sifting through a large volume.

I have read this book twice and I was still learning as I read it the second time. It includes lots of personal accounts, both by people who have seizures and caregivers (mostly parents of children with seizures). I think that these varied accounts provide a great deal of insight, particularly for those who don't themselves have seizures but must face its issues. The book includes lots of resources in terms of books, addresses, websites, and organizations, and also includes a good section on insurance issues. If your life is affected by partial seizures, you should have this book.

This is THE BEST book to come out for epilepsy in a long time. It is great for both adults or parents of children with epilepsy, covering everything from medications, complimentary medicine, the various types of seizures and possible causes. I found Ms. Waltz's information is very up-to-date (writing this in June 2001). The reference guide at the back of the book is a helpful resource for finding various support resources, including oversea pharmacies. I highly recommend this book to anyone whose life has been touched by seizures.

This book is informative on all aspects of partial seizure disorders, from discovery to diagnosis and treatment. I loved how easy it was to read. I read this book in less than 2 days! My only disappointment is that the book didn't touch a little more on the psychological impact of the disorders (and subsequent consequences).

Partial Seizure Disorders: Help for Patients and Families by Mitzi Waltz is now the second book I've read about seizures since having another seizure last month. This book is an excellent complement to the first book I read on living well with epilepsy.

While this book does not have some of the details that the previous book I read has, this book has more information overall which is why I found them to be complementary.

The author begins by distinguishing between the different types of seizures, explaining the parts of the brain, and explaining how seizures work. She ends the first chapter by talking about what to do when you have a seizure or when you see someone having a seizure. This information was very enlightening to me because I didn't know that seizures are rarely harmful. If a person is kept away from anything harmful, and people around them, make sure that they do not suffocate on food or anything else in the mouth, unless a seizure goes on for a prolonged period of time, the best thing to do is be with the person and try to help them relax (15-16).

In the second chapter, she explains how to diagnose the type of seizure if it is a seizure that one has experienced. She incorporates first-hand accounts to flesh out the doctors and procedures that are used. She also discusses things which may look like seizures which are not.

The third chapter deals with how to live with having a seizure disorder, and she discusses ADA, discrimination, rates, and limitations that one will have to accept. She discusses how important it is to have support from professionals and family and/or friends.

The fourth chapter deals with seizures in children and has a wealth of information about how to deal with the school system and help that is available to children in schools. She not only talks about schools in the United States, but what help is available in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand.

The fifth chapter deals with medical intervention. She discusses antiepileptic drugs and has a detailed description of the most used ones, their side effects, and tips about them which is immensely helpful when you're first trying out drugs. Whether it be this book or the PDR or some other drug handbook, it is important for the patient to do his or her own research and be able to discuss with the doctor what different drugs do and do not do. Some doctors will not like to be questioned, but it is the patient's right to understand what's going on and what might happen. The chapter continues looking at blood tests, EKGs, as well as other tests, surgery, and ongoing research.

In the six chapter she looks at dietary treatment, environmental triggers, vitamins and supplements, herbs, and general care of the whole person.

In the final chapter. She deals with issues of health insurance and again she looks primarily at the United States but also looks at benefits and Canada, the UK, the Republic of Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. She also looks at alternatives to insurance. These issues become very important, especially when treating chronic condition and because most health insurance policies have very limited mental health options.

The book ends with an appendix of resources where one can find information about epilepsy, seizures, the ADA, support and advocacy, medical references, drug company assist programs, and on and on. This appendix alone would be worth the price of the book.

Second appendix includes an example of a seizure diary which can be helpful in keeping records as one diagnoses and treats seizure disorders.

Finally, there is an extensive glossary of terms, which will be very helpful for reading this book, talking to one's doctor, and reading other books on this topic.

This is an excellent resource, and I have found it helpful as I am learning about what is going on in my brain and how to cope with it.
