Aromatherapy Handbook for Beauty, Hair, and Skin Care

Aromatherapy Handbook for Beauty, Hair, and Skin CareThis is one of the best overall books I read on Essential Oil and their uses. With more recipes that you can shake a floppy disk at. I recommend this book to anyone who is or would like to craft(make) there own natural beauty care items and perfumes. This book contains a good foundation aromatheray uses of the EO and EO blends. It eazy to understand for the beginner. Yet, I belive it is a book you will use as a referance for years to come. I know I will.

A very good book, easy to read, it explains alot and has many recipes that are very useful. Great book!

Especially for the beginner to intermediate aromatherapist and cosmetics maker, this book is an excellent resource. It's organized well and gives a quick description of most of the oils one would find themselves using to make potent, functional products. Lots of great recipes, though don't expect to be handed the methods for creating soaps, lotions, etc. This is more about proper usage of oils and their functions. I always have this book handy. While in no way is it a comprehensive source for all oils and all treatments, it remains one of my favorite resources for quick reference, even after several years.

I found this book very helpful for my soap and lotion business. Erich Keller makes interesting suggestions for the use of skin care products and for combinations of essential oils. There are also recipes included. It goes beyond the usual skin care book.

Essential Concepts for Healthy Living Update, Fifth Edition

Essential Concepts for Healthy Living Update, Fifth EditionI feel like some of the topics, although true, are not as up to date as they could be. Also, some of the chapters seem to be written from a bias perspective rather than a neutral, objective standpoint so some things were annoying to read about when you don't agree with them. Overall, it is good for anyone interested in overall health as it is very broad and outlines the basic concepts of a healthy lifestlye throughout the life cycle.

I used this book for a personal health class. It provided common-sense and practical information. It went more in-depth on some information than I expected and was satisfied with the text.

The Complete Book of Abs for Women: The Definitive Guide for Women Who Want to Get into the Ultimate

The Complete Book of Abs for Women: The Definitive Guide for Women Who Want to Get into the Ultimate ShapeI am a personal trainer (in training), and have built up quite the library of fitness books. I have tons of classics, from the Body for Life series to the Body Sculpting Bible to Sound Mind, Sound Body, and after a while, such books get repetitive. It is common knowledge that all training books have to cover all the same principles anatomy, physiology, nutrition, relaxation, goal-setting but this book is the only one that has done it in a way that caught my attention and did not put me to sleep!

Of course, I love reading about fitness and nutrition, but I have read about it so many times from so many books/magazines I was afraid I was in for a huge bore a book that would "tell" clients what to do, and insist that their way was "the" way.

Kurt Brungart managed to relay all necessary information about muscle anatomy, training, nutrition, pregnancy training, goal-setting and relaxation in a wonderful, delightful way that truly talks to you, not down at you.

The book is full of wonderful photographs with the most amazing models, and has the most comprehensive list of abdominal workouts and routines (from yoga, pilates, youth, teen and sport training routines) that I have ever seen and trust me, I have seen many. I thought I had seen everything!

Kurt doesn't forget that ab training alone is nothing he includes a progressive total body weight training, stretching and cardio routine that, when put together with the ab system, is the best, safest, and most comprehensive nine-week program I have ever encountered.

Despite it's title, it is a *complete* book in every sense of the word, and is very fun and easy to read, without missing any unnecessary information. Kurt has taught me important things like, "it is never to early or late to become a philosopher (when it comes to creating YOUR OWN food philosophy)", self-talk for a great relationship with your body, and the best goal-setting techniques. He also helps you discover your personality and incorporates it into your "exercise essence" so that it is easier for you to stick to a lifelong fitness regime.

He does not diss Atkins or the Zone, or any other diet guru. He tells you what his eating philosophy is (try to's NOT dont's), but tells you that whatever works for you, is what you should do. He does not force you to keep a workout log, for he acknowledges that certain people take to them and some don't. And of course, no insistent calorie counting, or rough food guidelines.

The whole system is progressive, but not only for beginners. Whether you have never worked out in your life, or if you're a figure competitor, you will love this book. It makes it practically impossible to not enjoy fitness and not make it a part of your life if not your whole life! :)

Minimal equipment required: the ab workouts require nothing really, unless you've already got a swiss ball or body bar and want to try his optional ball/bar routines. Total Body workout requires dumbbells only you don't even need a bench. Don't be fooled by the total body's lack of equipment though it is tough, if you do it the way he advises! They're basically the "meat and potatoes" of all weight training workouts and never fail.

By the way, don't worry he doesn't write the pregnancy chapter himself. A female doctor writes it. :)

I hope to become a trainer like him one day. His writing style and philosphies are universally friendly and the best I've ever experienced.

Buy this book. It is worth every single dollar and more, I promise!

After having twins, I tried getting my abs into shape by doing pilates and by doing a certain exercise ( you get on all fours, put your hips in neutral inhale and let your belly sag exhale and bring your abs in and hold them for 5-10 sec.). It brought my stomach muscles together in 2.5 to 3 months.

Then I wanted something to take it further. I got this one. I love that there are so many variation even though it may be based off of one move its amazing how one small variation can make such a big difference.

Right now I'm still in phase one for "from baby to beach". I hope to soon be able to go to phase 2 and then the regular program.

I say that this is great. There are so many exercises in here that I've never seen before. I'm 21, but when I was going to school all you could do for abs is: crunches, reverse crunches, and cross-overs for the obliques.

Its really amazing how much abs workouts has evolutionized.

This might not be very good for someone whos very in shape, but for someone who is not, its a book to grow with and to grow into. Plus, great for post-partum bodies. I've noticed its improved my pilates. In just 3 workouts, I've noticed my abs have gone down quit a bit, my posture is better.

Plus, his recommendations for cardio are awesome and I've never seen them anywhere before. Right now doing 5 min slow, 5 min fast, 2 min slow, 5 min fast, 5 min slow is sooo good. I've improved in my conditioning so much already.

I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to strengthen and lean down on your abs.

My only complaint how come he doesn't have a butt, thighs, and hips book for women?

Buy The Complete Book of Abs for Women: The Definitive Guide for Women Who Want to Get into the Ultimate Now

Definitely, this book is neither complete nor definitive on abdominal exercise. It is written by a trainer who knows a lot about exercise combinations, but has limited means to analyze or explain them. Before you get to the zest of the book in chapters 18 thru 22, you will go through plenty of common information that the author gathered from newspapers and magazines yet failed to connect them properly.

The author squeezes the anatomy of abdominal muscles just to show his familiarity with science and never attempted to use functional anatomy to explain any of the so many exercises listed in the book. Instead, each exercise is allotted one page, with two or three photographs, accompanied by few sentences of the start position, the move, and a hint from the trainer. Even the book's display of muscle anatomy is flawed. It describes the Transversus abdominis as running under the rectus and the obliques, all around the abdomen. The fact is that the Transversus barely sneaks under the rectus, high in the abdomen. Most of the center of the abdomen is supported only by the rectus and the aponeurosis of the other muscles. There is a figure in the book that enforces that flawed explanation too. Moreover, the author never explains how and when the internal oblique differs from the external oblique, in strengthening.

The biggest flaw in the book is improvising lower and upper abdominal regions based on the rectus abdominis alone. The categorization of exercises based on lower and upper abdominals is flawed and confusing. That is because the rectus simply pulls the chest to the pelvis in the center of the body and works out the same way whether the chest or the pelvis moves against resistance.

The prescription of exercises for first and second trimester of pregnancy is thrown in the book without professional justification. The author does not explain why a first trimester pregnant woman may do trunk extension in prone position. He also claims that some routines are suitable for Office Jobs, such as: knee raises, double crosses, and trunk extension. This is another ill advised tip since the knee raises and double crosses are dangerous when done without warm-up, in office environment. To show his inaptitude, he claims that for every 100 calories of fat intake, 97 are stored, while for carbohydrates he claims that for every 100 calories intake, 77 are stored as glycogen or fat, page 63. That is bizarre physiology to me.

The general trend in this book is "convolution". Instead of simplifying the basics of abdominal exercises, the author squanders 270 pages on redundant variations of simple body motions that could be reduced to less than five components. Although the author made the effort of tasking thirteen women to demonstrate the various combinations of exercises, he failed terribly in describing most, if not all, exercises in reasonable anatomical interpretation. After reading the book, you might wonder why Mike Tyson has the best 6-pack abdomen despite his illiteracy.

What bothered me most is that many chapters are merely two to four pages in length and would fit properly as footnotes for a single page of a decent book. Thus, instead of attempting to offer the reader solid knowledge, the author plays with exercise combinations with plenty of flawed explanations. Moreover, you will be immersed into an ocean of coined exercise names that sound fancy, but convolute the simplicity of abdominal training.

One great thing about this book is that it acknowledges and celebrates the different fitness levels in society. Its not a one size fits all type of a thing.Even though Kurt addresses the "abs", inside you will find useful information on the lower back as well as the deep core muscles that are important for movement.

Secondly, Kurt is sensitive enough to bring out age specific routines for different women.I thought this was really cool, given that a woman whose just given birth has a different capacity than a 18 year old childless college freshman..

Kurt gets into the issue of exercise physiology which is a highly misunderstood subject in society, he even gets into the role of hormones in exercising and your body's response.

I really liked the ab exercises in the book, he does something that I haven't seen in many books:he shows you how much risk is involved in each and every exercise!I really loved the oblique exercises.

I usually look at different books for sources of information, thats my policy and its really worked out for me.

This book is the perfect handbook for beginner and intermediate level exercisers and advanced levels who may need to revamp their routine or need some extra motivation.

It is layed out so as to meet the goals and attention spans of people who want to just look up some new moves to update their routines, who want to read about getting motivated for the first time, or the fifth time, or who want to target their abs for the first time. Whether your routine has a foundation of cardio, yoga, pilates, or weight training, this book provides instructions and moves that will tone your abs quickly and effectively.

I personally hate exercise books because I'm a visual learner. I like to work with a trainer, when possible, an instructor, or a video. This is the first book I've come across that had accurate and easy to read instructions on how to do even advanced exercises. And, yes, there are pictures too!

I've tried yoga, pilates, and weight training individually for four years before I picked up this book a year ago, and while I did see results, my abs were not as defined as I'd liked them to be, and I needed to learn some new moves. This book not only gave me new ab moves, but helped me rethink my entire routine! It's laid out so you can dive right into some new moves, and then go back and read through the chapters if you'd like. Or, you can read it beginning to end, and then start. It's a very functional, approachable text that should be in every woman's fitness library.

This book brought my abs and back to exactly where I wanted them to be.

How Women Mean Business: A Step by Step Guide to Profiting from Gender Balanced Business

How Women Mean Business: A Step by Step Guide to Profiting from Gender Balanced Business"How Women Mean Business" is a refreshing perspective on how integrating women into the modern workplace is in fact a business problem, not a "women's problem" and I have long held this view! What is also enjoyable about this book is that the increasing utilisation of "half the talent pool" is proving to be beneficial for the company bottom line and is certainly grabbing the attention of all senior managers of companies around the world. A must read!

This is one of two books written by Avivah Wittenberg-Cox that I have recently read, the other being Why Women Mean Business published two years earlier (2008). Although they examine many of the same socioeconomic issues and core concepts, it would be unfair to both books to suggest that one is a prequel or sequel to the other. There is much to be said for reading both, perhaps WHY first, but each can and indeed should be judged on its own merits. At least that is the approach I now take.

In a perfect business world, all organizations are pure meritocracies. Only the best people recruit, interview, hire, and then train only the best candidates. Those hired then become evangelists for the organization while helping to ensure thatat all levels and in all areas operations are productive, efficient, and profitable. Moreover, the organization has a steadily growing customer or client base, all of whom are evangelists.

In the business world as is, however, there are inequities and imbalances as well as ignorance, arrogance, incompetence, fraud, waste, etc. The best that leaders can do is to drive a process of continuous (albeit imperfect) improvement in terms of what is done, how it is done, and by whom. As the book's subtitle correctly indicates, what Wittenberg-Cox offers is a "step by step guide to profiting from gender balanced business." Only an organization's leaders can and should determine the nature and extent of what that balance should be. As she correctly notes, "This is not about the advancement of women: gender balance -a relevant mix of both men and women -is simply better for business."

These are among Wittenberg-Cox's key points that caught my eye:

o There is no glass ceiling. Rather, "gender asbestos" that prevents organizations from creating "a relevant mix of both men and women."

o The annual "20-first WOMENOMICS 101 Survey" (reports on the number of women in C-level positions in 101 largest companies in US, Europe, and Asia)

o A gender audit answers three Qs: "What's our balance now"? "What do others do?" and "What does our balance now say about us?"

o There are four phases of the process to achieve gender balance: Audit, Awareness, Alignment, and Sustain.

o The key drivers of gender balance are leadership (individuals and teams), talent (best available), and markets (influence of women)

Re this last point, according to recent research, decisions by women account for at least 85% of all consumer purchases including everything from autos to health care. For example: 93% of food and OTC pharmaceuticals, 92% of vacations, 91% of new homes, 89% of bank Accounts, and 80% of healthcare.

o Employee training in establishing and then sustaining appropriate gender balance (Chapter 8)

o Six ways to "make a difference" in recruiting (Pages 239-247)

o Measuring performance, progress, and impact of gender balance initiatives (Chapter 12)

I commend Avivah Wittenberg-Cox on her brilliant use of various reader-friendly devices throughout the book. They serve two separate but interdependent and important purposes: they focus on important points, and, they facilitate, indeed expedite frequent review of that material later. (That is why I highlight key passages and urge others to do so.) These devices include a "Checklist" of reminder questions at the end of each chapter as well as dozens of Figures and Tables, boxed mini-commentaries on real-world situations or major issues, and checklists of bold-faced key points or action steps to consider. Here in a single volume is just about everything a business leader needs to know about HOW to profit from gender balanced business, but also to derive substantial non-monetary benefits that include but are by no means limited to those who comprise the given workforce, viewed as a human community.

Two points are worth keeping in mind. First, it is no coincidence that most of the same companies listed annually as being the "most highly regarded" and "best to work for" are also ranked among the most profitable in their industry and have the greatest cap value. Also, the results of dozens of major research studies indicate that feeling appreciated is ranked either first or second in importance to both employees and to customers. What about compensation and price? They are ranked anywhere between 9th and 14th.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Plant-Based Nutrition

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Plant-Based NutritionI love this book! I love the recipes! I like how it is different from all the other "vegan" books out there; it is a step up. Instead of being called a vegan book it is a "whole-food plant-based" how to book. Vegan books usually contain lots of oil, sugar, salt and mock meats...Julieanna explains why all of these "anti-nutrients" are not good for you and how to get around using them in fun and delicious ways. I love the whole concept of the book. Great job Julieanna! She is an inspiration to me because I was a vegan for five years and fell off the wagon for cheese and now I am back on, thanks to her passion. This book reminded me all of the reasons I went plant-based five years ago and I will be giving this book to loved-ones as a reference because it explains everything you will ever need to know about being an herbivore!

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Plant Based Nutrition, by Julieanna Hever is a beautifully written work which explains the importance of healthy eating. The book is designed for people who know little about plant based nutrition, and for those who are fully knowledgeable. The book may be read cover to cover or the reader can pick out items from the Table of Contents which may be of particular interest to them. I went directly to the Super Snacks (wouldn't you just know it?) chapter and really look forward to trying some of those treats. I then turned to the Super Seniors chapter because living a long and healthy life is right about where I am. Every reader will find much of interest in terms what makes us healthy and what drags us down.

Even though the title of this series of books (Idiot's Guide) would lead one to think this book is for the un or undereducated person, it is not. Mrs. Hever has done a wonderful job of presenting evidence to back up all of her positions on diet and health. In Appendix C, she provides nutrition charts which are a scholarly look at the facts regarding plant based nutrition. Anyone who has ever wondered how we really get our protein, or how many vitamins we really need, or what happens to us as we get older will find the answers clearly explained in this book. When you finish reading it you will be very well informed indeed on how to improve your total life style, and just feel better about yourself and how you provide for your family nutritionally speaking. I bought this book for my wife who is a vegetarian but I felt was not getting a good, broadbased diet with all the nutrients that she needed. This book will teach vegetarians how to eat a healthy diet which is not lacking in required nutrients. I am cutting back on animal products too and this book is so helpful. A must read for any new or existing vegetarians or vegans, or anyone else who would like to explore a plant based diet. Wonderfully written and easy to follow.

I bought this book for my 80 year old mother, she is wanting to learn to go vegan in order to keep from having to take drugs for her Rheumatoid Arthritis. In just one month of trying to do it herself without guidance she is practically pain free, but she became worried that she may not be doing the right things, so I bought her this book. I read it first to make sure it would be helpful to her. It was so good I couldn't put it down, I ended up staying up all night to finish it. This book is just what she needed to answer any questions she had and alleviate any fears as to whether she was getting the proper nutrition. Plus, she found out she doesn't have to get fancy or start eating a lot of foreign foods that she can't find in her rural area and can't afford on a budget. She is thrilled with the book.

Want The Complete Idiot's Guide to Plant-Based Nutrition Discount?

At the time of this writing, I'm down 16.5 pounds of pure fat, which has melted away thanks to a mostly plant-based diet of high nutrient-dense foods, and moderate exercise (30 minutes of elliptical machine 3-4 times per week). I've never felt healthier--both physically mentally. Julieanna is one of the smartest and sweetest women on the planet. I've hired her as a nutrition coach, I've watched her documentary, I've read her blog and made her recipes. THIS IS THE REAL DEAL folks. Even if you are coming from a meat-based diet (like me), you'll find it's not really a compromise to reduce the intake. Especially when you start to see that thinner, younger body you once knew. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book and everything else Julieanna puts her stamp of approval on.

Rainforest Home Remedies: The Maya Way To Heal Your Body and Replenish Your Soul

Rainforest Home Remedies: The Maya Way To Heal Your Body and Replenish Your SoulThis book has remedies for any ailment a woman could encounter. From wrinkles to cramps to irritable husbands. There's a great section on massage for children to fix anything from nail biting to colic. It also seems there is a tea recipie for anything you could ever suffer from.

My personal testamony: I have suffered from chronic menstral cramps for the past 5 years and no doctor could find the cause of the problem. This book helped me realize that my uterus is tilted back due to years of dacing and running on concrete. By massaging my abdomen using the arvigo method taught in this book, for 2-3 minutes a day, I'm able to control the cramping without drugs. You don't know how amazing that feels!

I'm not very experienced in natural healing, and I must admit it was a little overwhelming at first, but now I feel very confident in the subject.

This would make the perfect gift to anyone with or preparing to have children.

I felt like I was in training as an apprentice while reading this book. It is an excellent source of knowledge for Rainforest herbs learned from a H'men (Shaman or Mayan Healer) and for some plants we grow in the US. My only regret is not reading this book prior to visiting Belize via a cruise ship and not going to Ixchel Farm. (I definitely will on next trip). The source of reference in the back of the book is excellent for resources on Herbs. There are recipes for teas and tinctures useful for all kinds of ailments. Rosita also shared her knowledge learned from Don Elijio Panti on massaging the uterus to center a tipped uterus which is the cause for many of women's health problems today.(if we could only teach our US doctor's this cure!). Very Spiritual Book alsoteaching the Spiritual side of healing and how important that is in the process of healing. The lessons I learned from this book, I will practice in my life. I read this book prior to reading her other book "Sastun". It is also an excellent book about the Mayan healer Don Elijio Panti and her apprenticeshipI couldn't put this book down.

I have had the pleasure of studing with Rosita, and visiting her in Belize. I had a chance to look this book over while waiting for it to be published. It is a wonderful book, filled with the wisdom of the Mayan traditions, healings, and spiritual practices, that Rosita knows so well having spent over 30 years working with the Mayan healers. This book is a treasure and should be followed by reading her first book, Sastun, my appreticeship with a Maya healer, which followers her journey to Belize and her delightful relationship with Don Elijio Panti, one of the last most respected healers of Belize.

When I first bought this book I thought that it was going to be just like other New-agey books that have flooded the market recently and have made fanciful distortions of the peoples of Meso-America.

This book was a great book in may respects because when I looked at the remedies and read the explanations given about the spiritual illnesses I saw that they were accurate. I grew up being treated with the wonderful indigenous medical system that was devised thousands of years ago in Mexico and Central America and was glad that this book contained information that would serve as a great primer to those who are wanting to know what the medicine of the MesoAmerican people really is like. Rosita Arvigo did a wonderful Job!

I am of Pipil descent and I believe that this book is one of the best books out there on the subject which it covers and you cant go wrong with the price either.

I picked up this book at a gift shop in Belize for the waiting room of my chiropratic practice in New York. It has attracted much attention and interest from my patients. The book is simple to follow and brings the timeless wisdom of an ancient healing tradition into practical use. In one case I recommended a remedy for headaches suggested by Ms. Arvigo. In conjuction with a program of chiropractic adjustments the remedy proved to be quite helpful. I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in natural healing.

Corps Strength: A Marine Master Gunnery Sergeant's Program for Elite Fitness

Corps Strength: A Marine Master Gunnery Sergeant's Program for Elite FitnessAm I really the first girl to review this book? Wow...So I was browsing Amazon.com for Marine Corps history books for my Dad and came across this book...for myself. I found the personal approach that MGySgt Roarke used by sharing his background with the readers really made the program seem real...and not some fad like the late night infomercials you see on TV. It was almost as if I was sitting listening to him explain these things to me. The layout is simple and VERY easy to follow.

The photos in Appendix B that show the proper way are very helpful, especially to someone who hasnt "PT"ed this way before. Sometimes positioning, especially if you've never done an exercise, can be difficult or cause bodily harm. Some slight modifications to some of the exercises to make room for my "girlie" parts, but otherwise fantastic. I've also found that in the past I have been missing a lot by not properly stretching. What a difference that is making in my "PT." The nutritional information in Chapter 8 "Chow" was fantastic. I have learned so much that I have already lost 4 lbs by changing my eating habits while working out my own personal EPRS schedule similar to those in Appendix E.

My favorites section was Chapter 10: Excuses, Vampires and Useless Information. In the past, I've always had excuses and/or emotional vampires to keep me from achieving my personal fitness goals. This book DESTROYED all of that an opened up a new mindset. I didn't go on a diet because of this book; I made a life change....AND IT HAS BEEN INCREDIBLE.

Thank you MGySgt Roarke for breaking this down for those of us who haven't served in the USMC. Thank you for the tool to change my life!

Semper Fidelis!

As a Marine myself I found the stories hilarious! The advice strait to the point and on the money. The Master Gunnz took a hard look at physical fitness and found a way to get it done no matter what the situation, the guy even worked out while in Combat. If he can do it I feel like I can do it to. I really enjoyed the book and like the idea that I don't need a lot of fancy gear to get my work out on! His advice is easy to read, easy to follow and repeatable. That is how we measure success in the Marine Corps. It is also great to hear a Marine who is now retired, talking about staying in shape for life. Once a Marine always a Marine! Buy the book, I highly recommend it. Bates Desert Tactical Boots

"Corps Strength" is a breath of fresh air in the overhyped, and often dishonest physical fitness book genre. True to his character as a senior Marine SNCO, MGuns Roarke simplifies physical fitness and avoids blowing smoke. MGuns clearly explains fitness concepts and how the average man or woman can implement MGuns' workouts into a hectic life.

As a retired Marine, I'm somewhat biased but if MGuns' concepts were just window dressing I wouldn't have bought the book. There is an abundance of military themed fitness books and products on the market. Most of them are unrealistic, and are unsustainable in terms of time and resources. I would venture to say that most people who buy these products quit after their false enthusiasm wears off. Navy Seal fitness books are great for Navy Seals or Seal prospects, but most of us are not nor will be Navy Seals. By contrast, MGuns' Roarke's book is easy to read, his plan simple to execute, and above all it's realistic. Those characteristics set MGySgt Roarke's book far apart from any other book or product in this category. Whether you're a teenager or part of the middle age brigade (OOH-RAH!), MGuns program is adaptable and doable. The plan can be tailored to whatever state of physical fitness you're in, and even those who are injured can make basic use of some of the plan's elements.

I e-mailed MGuns with some questions, and he immediately responded. How many authors do that in this day and age? I have bought two copies and plan to purchase more to give to other Marines and others who can make use of this book. Because of its simplicity, realism, and its no gimmick approach, I give this book 5 stars.

MGuns: Thanks for writing this. It was long overdue!

I think of the varying levels of quality I experienced in regard to physical-training (P.T.) sessions, when I was in the Marine Corps. This program compiled by Master Gunnery Sargeant Roarke is very similar to the rigorous routines we experienced as students in the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program. The instructor course was only six weeks, ...but what a profound effect it had! Everyone went home much leaner and meaner! Although Mr. Roarke is retired, the Marine Corps would make a good investment by hiring him as a consultant to further establish this program

throughout the U.S.M.C.

This book is NOT one of those glossy tomes of narcisism that promise you a glamorous body for the beach!

This is a book for PRACTICAL fitness!

This is a guide for all those people who work in some manner of job that demands peak performance. This book is for those who go into harm's way, probably in some variation of a green, black, or blue uniform. This is the training you REALLY need, if you are serving in the military, police, or emergency services. This book is also for those who work in other fields that are highly physical. A construction-worker, farmer, or full-contact martial-arts athlete will appreciate this information too.

The bottom line: You can get very tough and very strong with only a minimum of equipment. A Marine, regardless of his specific job, must maintain himself in fighting-condition. Deploying overseas, one does not always get access to a gym. Marines IMPROVISE! Much of the excercises in here are body-weight excercises. If you put the effort into it, you can get amazing results from even limited facilities.

SEMPER FIDELIS!

This is a decent book for your average Joe that needs a kick-in-the-butt to get off the couch and get in shape. The author advocates functional strength and conditioning, what he calls "working fitness," over beach muscles. Workouts consist of a 5 minute warm-up, 30 minutes of cardio, 20 minutes of weights/calisthenics and a 5 minute cool-down. He gives some ideas for different types of cardio, calisthenics and weight training exercises you can do. There's also a section on nutrition. It's mostly common sense but a reminder doesn't hurt.

He takes a very no-nonsense, no excuses approach which is good. Too many people find excuses to not get in shape and the author tells it like it is. This is a pretty basic workout book -it's short and to the point. It doesn't go into a lot of details so people who are really interested in fitness would be better off looking for a more comprehensive book.

If you're a busy, working person that wants a good plan to start getting into shape, I recommend this book. However, if you're already in-shape, workout a lot, & have your diet in order, there isn't much you can glean from this book.

In order to best position not only yourself, but also your organization, to be successful an accurate understanding of not only the legal requirements but also the technological advances and limitations is important. I had the opportunity to utilize this book working through my Medical Informatics program. This book is current, up to date, and incorporates the necessary technical information without being overwhelming to clinical individuals.

I actually had the pleasure of studying bioinformatics under Dr. Hoyt at the University of West Florida (UWF). There is a wealth of information packed into this book! It is current, incorporates the technical information needed for comprehensive knowledge of the field, and is understandable even to those on the periphery of the medical field (industrial hygienist). It's got me hooked...now I want to learn more. Who doesn't love a textbook under a $100 too?

Ultimate Physical Fitness in 5 Minutes: The Worlds Shortest, Most Intense Bodyweight Workouts Ever!

Ultimate Physical Fitness in 5 Minutes: The Worlds Shortest, Most Intense Bodyweight Workouts Ever! This book has pretty much changed the way I look at fitness, It's been kicking my butt and I love every minute of it. I've been doing workouts out of it for my entire special forces battalion and we can't get enough of it. Johnny Grube has pretty much designed the best work-outs I have ever seen. I just made my entire section bear crawl for an entire mile today, never reliazed how under rated the bear crawl is...great core exercise.

Gruber's philosophy of "training as a lifestyle" was a paradigm shift to me. Rather than spending 30 minutes in the gym, I will do a few minutes several times a day. Two minutes before having a shower, one minute before lunch, three minutes ... you get the idea. This is TOTALLY different to committing 30 minutes to going to the gym. Living, working and training become one. It's much easier to follow when leading a busy lifestyle. I'm not stressed thinking "oh, I need to go to the gym today." I can workout out almost anywhere. No need for tools. My body is my tool.

(-) The subtitle is useless and misleading. Grube doesn't need a catchy subtitle: he holds 10 world records. 10!

(-) He needs dearly a proofreader and an editor.

(+) The following sentence that summarizes his philosophy very well: "You can bench 300lbs and not be in shape, but you can't do 100 straight push ups unless you are in shape."

(+) For a strong body and lean body, he advocates fast and short training. It makes sense. Compare the bodies of a long-distance runner vs. a sprinter. The former tend to look fragile while the later looks strong.

(+) I love this: if you eat natural (i.e. eat clean), it makes sense to train natural (i.e. only bodyweight exercises).

(+) The book is thin and can be read quickly. Nobody needs another 300 page book.

(-) He is against jogging/running, but forgets the "mental benefits." After 10 hours sitting at a computer, I love to go for a run of 30 minutes, listen to music and switch of my brain. Running can be very therapeutically.

(+) He doesn't ask his readers to do sit-ups. That's great. That means, that he understands the futility of sit-ups.

(+) Grube keeps it very simple. I strongly agree with him, that it's much easier to follow a simple plan continuously. Every day. All year round.

(+) I love this: if you eat natural (i.e. eat clean), it makes sense to train natural (i.e. only bodyweight exercises).

(+) Few people think of pushups as a fat loss exercise. We need to re-think pushups and incorporate it in our daily life.

(+) While there might be no "perfect exercise", the Burpee comes close. You can do it almost anywhere. I'll incorporate Burpee's in my daily life. One minute of Burpee's a few times a day gets you far.

Kudos to Johnny Grube

The contents of this book will provide all the information and workouts you will need to get more fit than you ever thought possible unless you are a veteran of some exotic Special Operations unit. The content is straight forward and the variety of the workouts will prevent boredom and the infamous mythical plateauing.

One caveat, Johnny Grube needs a good proofreader and competent editor to clean up the errors and syntax in his writing. It is all readable but the errors grate on this writer's sensibilities.

First off let me just say, I'm after the hard functional muscles. I thought this book would be good for me based on the reviews.

My problem with the book is that it reads like a rant. The author is VERY full of himself. Its his way or you're wrong. Some of what he has to say, from my perspective is insulting, which really makes me dislike this guy.

There is a section in the book where he talks about fat lazy Americans. He claims that these fat lazy Americans aren't men. He says they pour gallons of booz down their throats which also makes them drunk stupid Americans.

I bought the book because I'm out of shape. He has insulted me by saying "I'm not a man". I have a drink from time to time (much less now days). He has insulted me by saying I'm drunk and stupid.

Tips for Grube #1: Don't insult your customers if you wish to keep them as customers.

Tips for Grube #2: Target your material at your audience, not yourself. In other words, tailor it to the people who will be reading it, not to people who are like yourself.

There is also a serious lack of professionalism throughout the book. Poor editing throughout, bad spelling, grammar, punctuation. A lack of effort in editing makes me wonder how much effort/scientific research he puts into his "program".

Tips for Grube #3: Don't skimp on public appearance or people will easily be able to question your legitimacy. Finish the book before releasing it.

Thank you for reading my review! If you enjoyed it, be sure to rate it as helpful.

This book, minus spaces, is less than 80 pages. How do short leaflets like this keep getting written--and sold? I guess the fact that this slim, uninspiring "you-can-find-it-free-on-the-internet" trash is self-published should tell you something.

I can tell you right now that most of the 5 star reviews here are from this "experts" friends and family. For a start, the book is appallingly badly written, from start to finish. I won't even get into the poor writing ability of the author: I would be astonished if he finished kindergarten, let alone high school, based on this garbage.

That would be okay if the content were great, but the author puts forward very basic, boring workouts. Intensity is a great thing, but I can tell you to do squats until you collapse and although that's intense it's not very enlightening or interesting to read about.

The book is crap. Avoid.
