Yoga Natural Fitness For Body and Spirit.

Yoga Natural Fitness For Body and Spirit.I received this book as part of a gift package from the Body Shop, and I wasn't expecting much. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that this is an extremely well-thought out book appropriate for beginners to more advanced levels. The book begins by reviewing some of the basic tenats of yoga, including the importance of breathing as well as the purpose of the healing chakras located throughout the body. It then goes on to introduce the sun salutation series, a basic series of poses which forms the foundation of most practices.

Following this, the book is divided into approximately 20 chapters, with each chapter containing instructions for approximately 4-5 poses centered around a particular theme. For example, the "Renewal" practice is a series of poses which can be done at your desk to restore your energy while you are at work, the "Stability" practice focuses on back exercises to strengthen your midsection--other themes include waking up in the morning, warming up prior to a workout, attaining calm, increasing concentration and mental focus, strengthening your muscles, and many more.

Each series takes approximately 10 minutes to complete, so they can be done in isolation or mixed and matched to form a custom practice. All of the poses in the book are at a beginning level, but most have both modifications and more advanced versions. Furthermore, the bottom of each section includes tips on breathing, meditation, and/or general wellness. I have really enjoyed this book, expecially given that it has helped me to incorporate more yoga into my fitness routine.

This is the best yoga book I have ever seen. Beautiful design, clear and honest writing. I've seen guests in my house -with no yoga experience -pick it up and before long they're on the floor doing the Downward Dog.

Taste of Home: Guilt Free Cooking: 356 Home Style Recipes for Healthier Living

Taste of Home: Guilt Free Cooking: 356 Home Style Recipes for Healthier LivingThe day this cookbook arrived, I showed it to a friend who is on a low-cholesterol diet; she liked the layout (nutritional information and photos) so much that I gave it to her. In return, she invited us for dinner the first time she used it. That meal was delicious, and I ordered another copy as soon as we got home. Last weekend I made three different recipes from the soup section, all of which were good. The Italian Vegetable Soup was particularly tasty, so I took some to a neighbor, who called almost immediately to ask for the recipe. (She and I are both in Weight Watchers, and this cookbook makes it easy to calculate point values.) Now she wants a copy, too. The format of the cookbook makes recipe selection simple for those who are watching their diet for one reason or another, the recipes are simple to prepare, and a number of them are easy to make ahead. This is a practical cookbook.

You cannot go wrong with Taste of Home. This cookbook is no exception. I have always loved Taste of Home, but when I recently started to try to lose some weight, I was hesitant to make any of the usual rich, tasty recipes. Then I found "Guilt Free". It came in the mail this week and I have already made three of the recipes each were fantastic! I would highly recommend any of Taste of Home's many cookbooks, but if you are trying to watch your weight, "Guilt Free" is the book for you it will not disappoint.

I despise cooking; moreover, I absolutely hate dieting. Imagine my surprise when I found a cookbook that appeared to provide both easy and low calorie, healthy meals. Can we say, "too good to be true"?

I took the chance and have been absolutely amazed! I've made a few dishes and a dessert from this book and they were extremely simple and tasty. I got my daughter interested in the book and now we're both ear-marking our next intended recipes with enthusiasm. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book to anyone else, regardless of cooking skill or intentions. I don't believe you need to be on a restricted diet to give this a shot -you simply don't miss the ingredients that are usually so bad for us that they substitute or leave out.

Get this book! :)

I'm a big fan of Taste of Home publications. The pictures are great, and the recipes are easy to follow. The refried bean burrito recipe is definitely my favorite from this book, but there are a lot of other great recipes in this book, too.

This book is also nice because it calls for relatively common ingredients, and nothing too terribly expensive.

I just ordered this cookbook after reviewing it at a family members home. I have tried several recipes and my husband and I have enjoyed them all. The recipes are made from affordable ingredients commonly kept as staples or on your weekly shopping list. (i.e. ingredients are not "unique" to each recipe and then will sit in your cuboard unused until the next time you make the recipe.) The recipe photos are beautiful and are an accurate reflection of the finished product you can create in your own kitchen.

The Family ADHD Solution: A Scientific Approach to Maximizing Your Child's Attention and Minimizing

The Family ADHD Solution: A Scientific Approach to Maximizing Your Child's Attention and Minimizing Parental StressI've read many books on ADHD and this is one of the best! (I'm an educator and have worked with ADHD students for over 16 years. I also have a parent and child with ADHD.) This book includes a comprehensive explanation of ADHD; it covers "clinical" information (backed by dozens of scientific research studies), but is written with great compassion for struggling families.

PART I-A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO ADHD: The cost of the book is well worth Part I alone! This section provides very clear, straightforward information about: the biology of ADHD, variety of symptoms, implications, and information to ensure an accurate diagnosis. On one hand, the information in this section is not "new," but the explanations are the most thorough and clear of anything I have read.

PART II-MINDFULLNESS IN ADHD CARE: In this section, Bertin introduces the scientific approach of using "mindfulness" to improve coping skills for dealing with ADHD. I have personal experience with this strategy; I learned a version of it 15 years ago to deal with chronic pain from rheumatoid arthritis and it was life-changing! I had never thought of using the same concepts to deal with the challenges of ADHD, but it makes perfect sense. This section includes sound, practical advice!

PART III-COMPREHENSIVE SUPPORT FOR FAMILIES & CHILDREN: This section covers a well-rounded scope of treatment options, both medical and non-medical. Once again, Bertin's chapter on "Medical Options" stands out as one of the best I've read because it addresses a wide scope of issues that are inherent to the ongoing debate over medical treatment for ADHD.

I've already recommended this book to several people: family, friends, and clients. If your life is impacted by ADHD, this book will be well worth your time and money!

As a pediatrician and a parent of a child with ADHD, I loved reading The Family ADHD Solution. Dr. Bertin approaches the challenges of raising a child with ADHD with warmth, humor and wisdom. He offers balanced and practical strategies for making family life more harmonious, using understanding to defuse conflict. Of particular value is the way Dr. Bertin introduces mindfulness to help parents face the ups and downs of ADHD with compassion and equanimity. I recommend this terrific book to any parent who wishes to develop a closer, more loving bond with their child.

This book was not only helpful from the perspective of ADHD parenting, but includes lots of practical, down-to-earth advice for anyone raising children. Dr. Bertin makes you feel calmer just reading and his advice has already helped me many times over.

You feel like he is in the room with you, telling you everything is going to be okay and giving you an approach that can start helping bring down your anxiety and help your child from the second you put the book down.

I recommend this to anyone first encountering a diagnosis or who has been living with ADHD in their family for years.

I am a fan of Joyce Vedral and have used her other books. When my brother, who lives 900 miles away said he was starting with weights, I told him to get one of Joyce's books. Of course, he didn't. So when I found it here, I had it sent to him. HE LOVES IT! He was so excited about it, he asked me to send a book for his wife to use, so I sent "Definition" to her. He is 56 and LOOKIN GOOD! Joyce makes it easy to get started with easy to follow instructions and pictures. She is what baby-boomers need!

I am a 29 year old martial artist who took sabbatical and had to rebuild what I had lost. This book helped much more than Schlossberg's DUMMIES guide or the Schwarzenegger books....plus, unlike most fitness books, this author actually cares to follow up on emails and such. Sure, she is selling dumbells in the back, but that doesnt mean her information is any less valuable. This is her career. Stick with the plan and see the results.

This book is a great way to start your weight lifting workout. BUT i have found a few problems with it as i have progressed.

1] The split routine she recommends is WRONG. She recommends biceps, triceps, and then chest, shoulders, and chest [and then a day off]. NO, the back exercises work out your biceps.. and the shoulder and chest exercises will work out your triceps... THUS violating the VERY Important rule of letting a body party have 24 hours off before you work it out again. The REAL split routine should be biceps, back, then chest, shoulders, and triceps. Doing it her way not only hurt my development but also was harmful to my overworked muscles that never really got enough time to heal between workouts.

2] The second and third shoulder exercises she lists are HORRIBLE. I have never seen them in ANY OTHER workout book, that is because you should always lift away from the floor against gravity. Those two exercises have to lifting the weights paralla to the floor, BAD and hard to do. She probably did this because she was hard up for exercises that allow you to always use the same 3 sets of dumbells.

3] Back exercise 3 [upward row] is also works shoulders too. This is bad if again you are using the split routine. Also I have heard from experienced lifters that the upward row is a horrible exercise and should be eliminated all together.

Otherwise an excellent do-it-yourself starting workout. Simple and straight forward. Start with it and see the results, BUT if you stick with it you will need more and better books then this.

Easy Hikes Close to Home: Phoenix

Easy Hikes Close to Home: PhoenixNote to readers: This is an excerpted review from a large print edition of the same book. I like the contents, but in large print edition, I commented more on the readability. This review is entirely about the content of this title.

Like many Menasha Ridge authors, Charles Liu has written an extensive hiking guide to the Phoenix region, and then excerpted some of the shorter hikes for a contribution to Menasha Ridge's "Easy Hikes Close to Home" series. Happily, this book does include some original material and anyone who enjoys southwest hiking will find some benefit from this title.

The book describes 20 different routes in the greater Phoenix area, all of which are within an hour's drive and none of which are longer than 6 miles. Still, readers who think they are getting all strolls in the park should be aware that no hike in the Phoenix area, especially in the summer, is truly easy. Be sure to carry plenty of water. Besides that, Liu has a passion for peaks, and this book includes several routes up the Phoenix mountains that are steep and moderately challenging. A few of these paths are not heavily frequented, but route descriptions are accurate, and this book includes a decent set of sketch maps.

As a (fairly regular) visitor to Phoenix, I prefer the short trail format. I get to see a lot of the region quickly in a morning or evening hike without having to acclimatize to the heat that dominates the area from April through October. I also appreciate the diversity of terrain in the book, including a waterfall! (Really.) So if you find yourself in Phoenix for a few days, this is a nice book to pick up. It will give you a variety of options for exploring a part of the city visitors rarely see. Even residents will benefit from this title, though Liu's longer book, 60 Hikes within 60 Miles, Phoenix, may be a better choice for those who live in the Valley of the Sun.

Smart Exercise: Burning Fat, Getting Fit

Smart Exercise: Burning Fat, Getting FitI bought this book because it was recommended in a mens' fitness magazine as being one of the best fitness books of the decade and I don't regret it. I've read a lot about diet and exercise and after a while it all sounds the came, but Mr. Bailey's book tackles the subject of exercise in a more in-depth manner. He doesn't just tell you that low-intensity full-body exercise is good for burning fat. He explains why in a convincing manner and the explanation goes beyond the "standard" stuff you tend to see in magazines. And it's not just about burning fat either. He explains what are the best ways to work out so that you can improve your aerobic fitness or how to train your short-term engery system for sprinting, etc...

Beware that there is some discussion of biochemistry -so you will see references to scary-sounding terms like the Krebs cycle, glucose, lactic acid, pyruvic acid, and triglycerides. However, he doesn't go into horrible, boring detail about these subjects. In fact, having some familiarity with this from previous biology classes, I think I might've enjoyed a little more in-depth treatment of these areas, but then that depends on what you're interested in. Don't worry -it's not super-complicated. He doesn't go through all the steps of the Krebs cycle for instance. He gives you enough to illustrate the points and to show that he knows what he's talking about.

Some might find his cute humor style annoying. For instance, he talks a lot about making you a "better butter burner". And he sometimes makes up silly stories that are not true to illustrate a point. It didn't bother me, but some people might be bothered by his lack of political correctness. He is quite liberal in his use of the word "fat people". He is pretty consistent in calling them "fat" rather than "unfit". Not being into political correctness, I found this amusing rather than offensive.

One other caveat is that the book is a little bit depressing at times in that it talks a lot about fat people (his phrase, see above :-) don't burn fat well, have a smaller range in which they can rest, have difficulty exercising at the proper intensity for results, and basically are just at a tremendous disadvantage while fit people burn fat well and have many advantages in getting fit. Might be depressing to you, but if it's true, you need to know so that you can take the right steps to get on the slow road toward fitness.

I enjoyed this book so much I gave it to all of my personal training clients for Christmas last year. If you have seen those health rider infomercials then you probably recognize Covert. You will be pleasantly surprised with his knowledge of exercise physiology and his great analogies and explanations of how your body burns fat and what it takes to keep it off. Covert has a knack for taking the most complex, scientific subjects and breaking them down so anyone can understand them. Some topics can get a little heavy but for the most part you will learn fact from fiction and get a few laughs along the way. Whether you are ready to get back on track, a weekend warrior or a hard core fitness enthusiast you can learn something from Covert. Take that four letter word D-I-E-T out of your vocabulary and get ready for realistic solutions to maintaining your health and exercising smarter.

Get smart and fit with Covert Bailey's Smart Exercise. This well known fitness author has produced several great books over the last decade. Bailey's clear perception of excess fat as a lack-of-fitness problem is very useful. Although a few very heavy-eating fit people might be overweight, in general "being fat" is a state of not being fit. Attaining fitness will reduce and end fatness. Becoming fit, in Bailey's view, occurs at the level of the muscle cell. Aerobic exercise involving breathing heavily is the key type of exercise for allowing muscles cells to train to burn fat. Building muscle and making that muscle an efficient furnace of calories is the key to being trim. As Bailey says, use aerobic exercise to "be a better butter burner."

The basic Slimming Partner movement recommendation is to move under your own power, especially walking, for at least an hour per day. Although walking is a wonderful, healthy activity for everyone, Covert Bailey would probably urge activity more demanding than walking, such as adding wind sprints to a walk. For someone quite overweight and out of shape, wind sprint would mean just a faster walking pace, maybe with some uphill. Bailey feels that the, the normal walking pace people choose is too slow to provide big fitness and weight control rewards. He advocates higher levels exertion as a way to become fitter faster, supporting his ideas with a fairly detailed view of how muscles train on the level of the cell.

The book's analysis of training at the level of the muscular cell is informative and useful in creating positive mental images of the beneficial effects of aerobic exercise. Graphics are provided that help understanding of fairly complex subjects, energy metabolism with ATP and cellular enzymes. Bailey quickly and clearly states these subjects in ways most helpful to the person wanting to lose fat: Train your aerobic system, which he also calls your fat-burning system. This is easier to do if you can mentally visualize your trained muscle cells pulling fat out of your system and burning it as fuel.

In general, this book is an excellent addition to the library and reading list of anyone interested in becoming less fat and more fit.

This book really will help you be smarter about how you exercise. Smarter, at least, in the sense of targeting your exercise program to reduce fat. Bailey doesn't spend a lot of time talking about cardoivascular fitness as a goal unto itself or building a hard body or other exercise goals you might have. I think he assumes these subjects are by now thoroughly covered by others. And although he does talk some about diet, this is no diet book. He focuses on the correct exercise approach to getting rid of fat.

For the most part, this book succinctly describes Bailey's account of the biochemistry of burning fat. He describes how fat is (and isn't) burned by the body and how to increase its fat-burning efficiency.

The book is somewhat technical and therefore dry for those not fascinated by biochemistry. Bailey tries to make up for this with insufferable cleverness. But the book is well worth toughing it through. It's not terribly long, and an investment of a couple of hours will arm you with enough knowledge to structure your workouts for maximum fat-burning efficiency, if that is one of your goals. Which kinds of exercise increase the body's ability to burn fat? Which kinds of exercise actually burn the fat most efficiently? They are not the same kinds of exercise, and both kinds need to be developed. There are also sections on improving athletic performance that are probably insufficient for serious athletes but which are very helpful for active amateurs like me.

I read the book about a year ago, and, although it wasn't the most entertaining book I've ever read, it has really helped my understanding of how to train and (yes) how to burn fat. I've really benifited from it.

Covert Bailey is a master at making physiology easy to understand for the average person. If you are looking to improve your health and get into better shape, then you should have this title on your bookshelf. It does a great job of helping you to understand what works and what doesn't.

Much like Bill Phillip's book Body For Life, this book stresses that exercise is the key to reducing fat and improving overall health. It explains why diet alone won't help you to lose weight permanently, and what the benefits of cardiovascular exercise are.

When you finish reading this book, you will have a basic understanding of how the human body works, what makes people gain weight, how muscle is formed, how fat is formed and how to take it off permanently. Medical techno-babble is translated into terms that absolutely anyone can understand. His humor and amusing metaphors make for an enjoyable reading experience as well.

...This book is worth way more than it sells for. It is packed with useful information, good science and great advice.
