The Insider's Guide to Dementia Care: What You Should Know About Assisted Living, Alzheimer's, and D

The Insider's Guide to Dementia Care: What You Should Know About Assisted Living, Alzheimer's, and Dementia CareFor anyone who's trying to figure out what's going on with a family member suffering from Alzheimer's, there are some great practical insights in this book. It should also be required reading for anyone who is caring for dementia patients in assisted living or any other facility. The case studies are very revealing about how misunderstanding of these conditions can lead to inappropriate handling of situations and unnecessary distress for both patients and caregivers.

I'm buying copies for my public library, church library, and for the operator of the wonderful personal care home where my mother now lives. Thank goodness her caregivers are interested in all they can learn about doing a better job.

I am a newcomer to dementia care in my household and was having serious trouble getting beyond the platitudes and shallow descriptions of the conditions that are called dementia. This book goes a very long way in getting behind the most casual behaviors by which we can recognize the condition and the stages in which our loved ones are found. It is a great help in deciding on proper care by others as well. Excellent source of information.

The Chiropractor's Self-Help Back and Body Book: Your Complete Guide to Relieving Aches and Pains at

The Chiropractor's Self-Help Back and Body Book: Your Complete Guide to Relieving Aches and Pains at Home and on the JobLast year I had a back injury that left me immobile for two months. During that time I read four back books to "empower" me with knowledge and tips for recovery. Dr. Homola's book (now with post-it-notes stuck in numerous chapters) was the most helpful. From helping to determine causes of pain, to outlining simple excercises you can do without buying expensive equipment, this book was the only one I really needed to read. It's a book I'll keep on hand as a helpful resource for years to come.

I found this book very informative and have reccomended it to several others. When my herniated disk was causing lots of pain, I was desperate to get some relief. I just happened to find a reference to the author somewhere on the internet and even actually called him. He was very gracious to talk to me, shared some advice and kept me from making a very expensive decision concerning chiropractic care for my entire family. His book is straightforward and understandable. I thank him for the words of advice and his expertice, if your back is giving you trouble in any way, you'll find this book to be quite an interesting read. Thanks Mr. Homola!

I found Dr. Homola's book to be very beneficial. His straight forward approach to problems and cures was refreshing. Having been in the care of many chiropractors over the years, its an eye opener to read some practical ways to lead one to better health. The only people that would have a harsh opinion about this book are those with an ulterior motive or who do not understand that a simple way of helping people to better health is the best way.

I have thoroughly read Dr. Homola's book and have found it to be an excellent consumer self-help guide. It's instructions, recommendations and reasoning are quite clear and flawless. Dr. Homola states that many "Aches and Pains" are self resolving and provides simple, convenient and rational means for the average person to understand and utilize. John Campo, DC, CICE, DABQUARP

The Teaching of Talking: Learn to Do Expert Speech Therapy at Home With Children and Adults

The Teaching of Talking: Learn to Do Expert Speech Therapy at Home With Children and AdultsIf you are a caregiver of a PWA (Person With Aphasia) who has moderate to severe aphasia, this book should be extremely helpful if you want to maximize their progress. Ittleman indicates if a PWA can imitate even single words and understands what you are saying, his method should be effective. This is true even if a person also has apraxia, though profound apraxia will probably first require other methods. Although a chapter is devoted to working on mild aphasia, and it's a good chapter, the rest of the book is more appropriate for more significant aphasia issues.

What I've Gotten Out of this Book:

1. Stimulate speech whenever you are together during the day. (My own Caveat: amount and timing need to be finessed so it's enough but

not too much for you both.)

2. Relax. Have fun. Use humor.

3. If your PWA is willing to work, they'll improve.

4. Be conscious of what you're stimulating for in terms of lengths of sentences.

5. Be aware of the need to slow down and enunciate slowly, especially words with more syllables.

6. Start easy. Work step by step for success at each step before making things more difficult.

7. Learn what mistakes to ignore.

8. Give your PWA positive feedback. If there are errors, rather than draw attention to them, suggest they try again.

This book is all practical. It's written so anyone should be able to understand. There is really no theory to get bogged down with. There are a lot of examples that anyone should be able to relate to. In addition, you're encouraged to work with relevant content, and especially in the beginning, words, phrases, or sentences that refer to your immediate environment.

If you are working with a therapist, hopefully, they've read this book and can help you put it into practice. If you aren't working with a therapist, you should probably be able to do much of what is suggested simply by reading the book. If this seems too much of a challenge, Ittleman's website, should be helpful including his videos. And he's also willing to either consult on-line with you or even answer your emailed queries. He's dedicated to spreading the work of how to do successful work on aphasia in your own home.

I wish this book had been available three years ago when my husband had his stroke and could hardly say anything. He has had lots of speech therapy, including an intensive program, and all have been helpful. But Ittleman's methods have truly seemed to make the most difference. We have chosen to also do some consulting time with him. For us, this works well, and his charges are reasonable, especially given the time and effort he puts into lesson planning, notes to you, and answers to emails. But for those of you who do well with applying material straight from a book, the book, with perhaps some emailed inquiries and looking at his site, should be enormously helpful.

Finally, this book doesn't address reading and writing issues. It focuses entirely on speech. If your PWA is like my husband and having difficulties with all three, it's probably better for quality of life for both of you to focus on speech. I guess exceptions would be if they seem to have more potential or interest in writing or reading than in speaking.

The Teaching of Talking by Mark Ittleman, M.S., CCC, Speech Language Pathologist is the ultimate guide for caregivers, loved ones and therapists of individuals who have speaking difficulties. This book is the perfect combination of principles and therapeutic methods for improving language learning, re-learning and production. Each chapter has a very specific purpose, ranging from theory and principles, evaluation/screening, therapy techniques with detailed examples, and the author's occasional humor.

In the The Teaching of Talking, Mark Ittleman introduces his readers to a unique, practical, fun and easy method that can be used by anyone to encourage language comprehension and the ability to speak. In the book he refers to a person who has a speaking difficulty as a (PSD).

I am a Speech Language Pathologist who works with individuals with speaking problems as a result of strokes, brain injury, birth defects, developmental delay, cancer, etc. I have had an opportunity to personally be mentored by Mark for over 2 years. His passion is reflected in his extensive work with patients with aphasia, apraxia, dysarthria and various voice disorders as a Speech Language Pathologist. His work as an SLP for 40 years has brought him to develop ¬¬this extraordinary and revolutionary method to stimulate language in "real-life" activities, which promote speaking practice, using the actual act of speaking. The methods in the Teaching of Talking encourage speaking with a person who has a communication difficulty (PCD) about their interests, likes, dislikes, preferences, and anything else they would like to converse about, and is empowering. The methods in The Teaching of Talking involve the therapist, loved ones, caregivers and patients as a "team" by allowing them to be "present" and participating in the conversation, even when the PCD may not be "communicating" at a level like they did before.

The Teaching of Talking inspires you to look beyond traditional therapy, to the stimulation of talking at the PCD's level, whether it is single words, phrases or sentences and to improve language understanding and use in a gradual step by step fashion. In The Teaching of Talking, Mark provides a screening tool and information about the "tools of the trade" with very detailed and specific examples for every single technique, which made it easy for a novice therapist like me to learn. A loved one, family member, or caregiver can also readily learn them. Experienced speech pathologists would also benefit from The Teaching of Talking, as it can give their therapy a whole new dimension of fun and simplicity.

Anyone who is interested in helping one speak again can master the Teaching of Talking methods with this book and Mark's mentorship. It is apparent that the goal of this book is to form a group of individuals to master the art of stimulating clarity of speech and language in a simple, functional and meaningful context of daily living activities.

The beauty of these techniques is that ¬¬¬¬¬they are very easy, and can be done all day long, without a structured "homework" time. I have learned that caregiver and families are very compliant with the home program when it does not involve adding to their busy schedules in the burden of caring for their loved one. What a relief it was when I found myself actually enjoying therapy in a positive and encouraging environment, having fun, laughing, joking, and all the while stimulating language and having them speak back to me in single words, phrases and sentences, when weeks before only withdrawn silence.

Imagine the relief when you can tell your patient's spouse that he or she can help their loved one speak again while eating, showering, going to bed, getting, dressed, shopping, and all the fun activities they share daily! ¬¬¬¬The technique utilizes a model of errorless learning and positive reinforcement to modify the speech of the PSD to make it more accurate with each question and answer.

The Teaching of Talking and mentorship program will teach anyone to be as good as any speech therapist in stimulating language at home, at the grocery store, or anywhere else you can think of! I have recommended this book to several of my patients' families and will definitely continue to use this method in my practice. This book is hands-down the best resource for anyone working with a person who has a speech or language difficulty such as children with delayed speech and language development, or those with stroke, head injury and aphasia.

I wish I had read this book over 2 yrs ago when our daughter came home after a stroke and a 2 month coma.....she's had almost three years of traditional speech therapy, but as this book explains the magic happens at home with loved ones seven days a week. The book has so many tips from the very beginning of the process to progressively improving one's speech and understanding by drawing the subject out and helping them want and feel able to communicate with the outside world.....it ALL happens in everyday life with parents and loved ones....not an hour a week in "speech therapy" doing excercises from third grade workbooks (sorry therapists, you do help too but you can't achieve much in an hour or two a week.....we still love you!).

This book is basically for the ones who lost voice/speaking-ability post-stroke or such scenarios, and is NOT for the ones who want to improve upon their speaking abilities or techniques or the articulation.

Somehow no review (at least the ones, I had gone thru), neither the ToC could help me identify this. So this was definitely a wrong investment for me.

BTW, for the ones who lost ability to speak post-stroke, this book might help.

Upon returning to the field of Speech Pathology after happily staying home to raise my children, I can honestly say that the "Teaching of Talking" is a groundbreaking book for therapists and families who have been impacted by TBI or stroke. It is a logical and simplistic system that will help therapists train caregivers, so that once therapy time is over these individuals will continue to make progress. With the possibility of major changes to healthcare we cannot look to the therapists, as people who will magically be able to make loved ones talk. It is unrealistic and Mark's book is the first realistic approach to making major gains in the speed of recovery from brain injury. Well written, organized and concise. He is an inspiration!

Strength Training Past 50 - 2nd Edition (Ageless Athlete Series)

Strength Training Past 50 - 2nd EditionAt 67 I had developed upper back pain associated with spinal arthritis. Upon the advice of a reviewer, I ordered the book, bought some free weights, and immediately began training to strengthen the muscles that support my spinal column. After a month of carefully following the recommended workout schedule, I found myself completely pain free. Although the results are proof of the pudding, I was particularly impressed with the authors' emphasis on safety and their guidance on how to find your point of beginning and to progress without injury.

The photos and descriptions of individual exercises were essential in making sure that the exercises were done correctly and to the greatest benefit.

In my opinion the price of the book is a gift compared to the feeling of well being derived from carefully following the given plan, which, by the way, is adaptable to each individual's capabilities and needs.

Strength Training Past 50 is a very good book and anyone past 50 who has an interest in fitness or has been directed by a physician to lose weight should read the book. The program in the book must be carefully followed, particularly the weight and repitition recommendations. This program was designed for a very broad age range and a broad range of physical fitness levels typically found in adults past 50. It's strength is that it is an excellent introduction to resistance training for those who have not lifted or have not lifted for a significant period of time. If you are 50 or older, male or female, and not an experienced lifter, you may expect to lose weight, gain muscle mass, energy, and a positive self image by following the program in this book.

Pros:

A very good intro for boomers who have never done strength training and want to get into it. A lot of other strength training books target an audience who are potential Incredible Hulk wannabees. Excellent recommendations for weight selection, exercise frequency, repetitions, etc. based on scientific studies. Also good training programs targeted for those in the 50+ crowd. But you must keep in mind that the range 50-90 is a very broad range.

Cons:

The discussion on equipment options is very light. I would say it is inadequate. The worst part of the book is the organization of the exercises. They are grouped by the area of muscle exercised such as Upper Body. Within this group various exercises for machine, barbell, and dumbell are mixed in together. If you are using only dumbells, then when following the recommended training sequence of exercises, you are flipping all over the book skipping past the irrelevant exercises. And, no, the exercises are not indexed. I think a further organization of exercise by equipment (or at least a table or index) would have been helpful.

Overall, though, the book is a big help for someone like me (fifties) just getting into strength training. A couple of more good books covering equipment and a wider range of exercises, and you're all set.

I'm ordering a second copy of this book for my brother. I've shared my first copy with a number of friends. The introduction -which outlines the value of weight training at any age -is worth the modest price. I've followed the book for a year since I bought the book, and have seen steady gradual progress in weight reduction and increased strength. Not a quick-fix approach, but instead a well-written plan to incorporate weight training into daily life, for both men and women. Geared towards newcomers, but also has information that will those with prior exercise experience. It stresses safety and gradual improvement.

As someone who is both older and an experienced weightlifter I can tell you that there were many errors in this book. For one thing it did not warn the reader against the leg extensions if he or she has bad knees. They can blow your knees in a heartbeat.

It also gave odd weight recommendations. In one area it gave a starting weight of 60lbs. There are few older people who can or should lift 60lb, at least to begin with. But in other areas of the book it used such recommendations as 10lbs, more reasonable but too high for many fragil oldsters.

The nutrition area was not current either. But it wasn't bad.

Some of the studies it quotes are good and motivational. But you can read those elsewhere. They simply give the many benefits of weightlifting for all people --especially older people. And that's a good thing.

I would recommend a book like Strength Training Anatomy or a book by Dave Draper or Clarence Bass, both oldsters and great bodybuilders. Beyond that, each person should adjust each exercise to his own limitations and health conditions and not follow any set guidelines. If it hurts, don't do it. There are hundreds of wonderful, powerful exercises you can do that won't hurt you. And you'll build all the muscle and lose all the fat you want.

And by the way, there is a wonderful ebook called "Lose the Fat Feed the Muscle" that I recommend to all ages. It's written by bodybuilder Tom Venuto and is about the best book on this subject I've read in a long time.

Save your money on this book and buy one that will help you. But whatever you do --DO LIFT WEIGHTS! It will make you a new person at any age.

Coming Home to Your Body: 365 Simple Ways to Nourish Yourself Inside and Out

Coming Home to Your Body: 365 Simple Ways to Nourish Yourself Inside and OutThis book is a wonderful way to get in the habit of self-care. So much of our daily experience is imprinted on our physical beings-our bodies-yet, our culture is so cerebral that we have learned to "tune out" these vital messages. Understanding what your body is saying to you, stopping and listening, and reflecting back to your body "I understand you" are the foundations for mind-body wholeness.

This book has practical exercises for increasing your understanding of your body's messages. Some of them are not very realistic, because they require a chunk of time that is hard for many of us to create. Others are so simple and so effective that it makes no sense NOT to give them a try.

This is a beautifully, compassionately written little book on learning to honor your body, respect your needs, and take care of yourself. Berry teaches self-nurturance in one of the best ways that it can be fully experienced: on a moment-to-moment, daily basis. She encourages readers to take good care of their bodies through regular physicals, nutrition, exercise, massage, hot baths, and more. Included are delightfully sensual and joyous ideas for self-nurturance, and many little quizzes to see where you are in the process of self-nurturance. Extremely valuable for those who have become disconnected from their bodies, as well as for women who have experienced childhood trauma. A wonderful gift for a close friend or a sister. Most of all--for yourself! Highly recommended.
