Homeschooling: The Teen Years: Your Complete Guide to Successfully Homeschooling the 13- to 18- Year

Homeschooling: The Teen Years: Your Complete Guide to Successfully Homeschooling the 13- to 18- Year-OldI just finished reading "Homeschooling the Teen Years." I've highlighted over half of the book, and now I'm reading through it for the second time. I'm checking out all of the web links listed etc. Thank you so very much for writing this terrific book. I am new to the homeschooling scene and would have been quite lost without it. You have pointed me in the right direction.

Two weeks ago I pulled my 12 year old, seventh grade student from public school on basically what was a spur of the moment, desperation move. Long story short, he has been on Ritalin for 4 years, has never enjoyed even one day of school (including kindergarten), had a 504 plan for passive A.D.D and writing/processing problems. I was tired of trying to get the teachers to cooperate, my son to do his homework after school, tears, low self-esteem and failing grades. I just knew there had to be a better way to help my son receive the education he deserves.

In just two short weeks, my son's behavior and personality are undergoing major changes. He is happier, less stressed, and for the first time -willing to sit down and learn without the fear of failure. The greatest part of all is that he's no longer taking the Ritalin. I threw that away the day I pulled him from public school. Guess what? He's fine without it. I feel in my heart that this was the best decision I have ever made for my son.

I was scared, doubting myself and wondering why in the world did I think I could do this. Now I know I can do this, and do it better then the schools. Thank you for being there for me when I needed you most. Your book has become my inspiration and will continue to guide me through the high school years.

Thank you, Cafie Cohen, from the bottom of my heart!

I have been homeschooling for 11 years now and I must say this has been one of the most useful publications I have come across. I have already struggled through two teens with little help and not knowing where to turn for resources. There is a great deal of information for the younger years, but very little for teens. This book not only give you insightful information to make your teens education well rounded and interesting, but it also provides a wealth resources to turn for further information. No homeschool should be without it.

This is a great book for anyone homeschooling teenagers. In a wonderful, easy-to-read format, it discusses concerns of every family member -mom and dad and teens and younger children. The author answers questions that new homeschoolers have, such as "How do we get legal?" and "Where do we find curriculum?" and "What about a diploma?" In addition the book contains a wealth of information for experienced home educators. Drawing not only on the author's years homeschooling her own children, but also on the experience of dozens of homeschooling families worldwide, this title contains an incredible number of fun, creative, practical, and money-saving suggestions for all subjects -writing, foreign languages, advanced math, history, science, and so on. Based on a survey results compiled by the author, you will find lists throughout of homeschoolers' favorites -from software to historical videos to authors teens love. One chapter discusses part-time homeschooling and afterschooling, that is, using homeschooling resources and approaches with schooled children. This is perfect for those families who want to use tried-and-true homeschooling resources to improve their child's math abilities or to enrich their teen's school history curriculum. Afterschooling offers ways to try homeschooling without jumping in full-time. Above all, the book emphasizes that there is no one right way to succeed. Instead it details many paths to success -traditional approaches, unit studies, interest-initiated learning, and eclectic approaches -and invites you to select those options that best fit your family.

This is Just what I have been needing. Especially the chapters on "The Joy of Learning with Teens" and "Learning Assets of the Teen Years". I've needed this wake-up call to focus on the positives of the teen years instead of the negatives.

This is the best homeschool book I've read in years! Cafi manages to give a broad picture, explaning the many different routes homeschoolers take, while giving you baby steps of how to get moving in positive directions, find great curriculum, and money saving tips. She addresses the specifics of the 3R's and the Extras, addresses tailoring your school to your family's needs, keeping records and much more. I loved the fact that she writes with a national perspective. These are not just her ideas, but come from a large pool of home educators across the continent. The book is packed with resources, not an indiscriminating barage, but only the best.

I got my copy of Homeschooling, The Teen Years and read it through immediately. It was such an encouragement. Although we have been homeschooling for more than five years, sometimes I get cold feet and fear that we are not doing enough. Cafi's book points out the many ways we educate our kids every day and gives suggestions for new things to try. I highly recommend this book to people who are considering homeschooling their teens, and especially to those who are already doing it!

When Someone You Love Has a Mental Illness

When Someone You Love Has a Mental IllnessThis book contains what so many mental health books lack: advice. The majority of books on mental health offer a medical or personal description of various mental health conditions. This book tells someone who loves or cares for a mentally ill friend or relative how to help and handle them.

It covers the basics of how to approach and talk to someone who may not be behaving or thinking rationally at the time, to how to work with insurance companies and locate help.

I have purchased dozens of books in my quest to help a loved one. While the majority have been useful, this is the one I wish I read first. If you need help understanding and working with mental illness, this book is a great starting point.

This book is excellent for people with relatives or friends who have severe mental illnesses, requiring occasional (or frequent) hospitalization and so on. It is a good resource in that it gives advice and tips for coping with various situations that absoultely will come up when you have a relationship with a mentally ill person. It is practical, there is no hypothesizing about what causes what, no blaming the family, very little "psychobabble." It's almost a how-to manual. It offers some insight into what the mentally ill person experiences, which is helpful to the family who may be frustrated and overwhelmed and very tired of trying to understand.

But it does not offer much for spouses in a relationship with a person with mental illness. Nor does it extend easily to the family and friends of somebody who has a mental illness or brain disorder who is as functional as the "average" person most of the time, but has frequent, incapacitating mood and perceptual problems.

If your loved one has a mental illness which is not so severe as to require hospitalization freqently, or a large degree of psychiatric intervention, this book will provide you with soem understanding, but not as much practical help as it will for people facing more severe problems.

This book is wonderful. If you are dealing with a family member who has a mental illness (particularly severe schizophrenia), you will find answers and helpful advice throughout this book. The first few chapters provide insight into the illness and it's especially readable because Woolis doesn't get overly medical. She provides enough information for you to understand about the illness and why your relative may have it. The book is chock-full of useful advice, and we have tried many of her suggestions (with success) already. She walks you through ways to talk to your family member during `episodes,` how to get them to perform basic tasks, how to ask them to take meds, and so on. There is advice for almost every situation. And, the best part is that Woolis treats the illness with respect, and encourages us to do the same throughout the entire book. I really felt that her advice is from the heart, and meant to help us. There is a section on how we need to focus on ourselves too, and that was particularly helpful. The book is very user-friendly, and can be read cover to cover or in sections. Many of the sections answer the questions most family members have, and offer concrete and realistic ways in which to handle the bizarre requests and behaviors that accompany mental illness. Everyone in our family has a copy that gets a lot of use. Highly recommended.

When my son was disgnosed with a mental illness I started to look for books and literature that help me to understand what was going on, and how could I deal with it. Also, to learn about what to expect in terms of behaviors that I haven't seen in him yet, etc. I found several books that were very good in terms of describing mental illness from the medical point of view, but none of them would say much about the patients as people interacting with relatives or friends. In addtion to that, is common to find description of very extreme and severe cases whose profile may not necessarily match yours. This book is easy-to-read and its content is excellent. It has all the practical information you need to know, and you need to be aware of. Even though it doesn't not go very in depth, the information provided comes from a valid and experienced source who has work and done research about mental illness, so things are explained along with the "reason why" they happened that way and not in other, and why they fit in the profile of mental illness. This book helps people to learn the best ways to deal, act and react to a person who suffers from it in a way that both, patient and family, can reduce the stress and find harmony living together. EXCELLENT

This book was extremely helpful to our family. Make sure you get a copy of the 2003 revised edition. I was first sent one that had the older edition (with 232 pages) even though the cover said, "revised and expanded". The revised edition has 308 pages. Amazon/B & N, or the publisher will send you a new one if you return it. The book is well worth reading. It has so much practical advise. We are now able to talk with our son again, which we've hardly been able to do since he got sick.

The Miracle of Apple Cider Vinegar: Practical Tips for Health, Home, & Beauty

The Miracle of Apple Cider Vinegar: Practical Tips for Health, Home, & BeautyWhat I liked about this book was that the author didn't claim that ACV cures every disease there is and does everything but the dishes. That was quite refreshing. The health claims made by the author were quite measured, as is appropriate.

The book starts off by explaining the compounds which make up apples and ACV and how each of them is beneficial to health.

The books then discusses and explains that the mouth should always be rinsed with water after taking ACV, so the acid doesn't affect your teeth, how ACV can improve protein digestion and can be used to make detox baths and to rinse the hair with to make it shiny...and lots of other uses for ACV.

I wish that the comment about 'CFS' (or even worse, 'CFS/ME') in this book (and almost every book on diet and health, it must be said!) could have been omitted, as every diagnosis of 'CFS' is a misdiagnosis and talking about 'CFS' as if it has a distinct cause and reaction to treatment is unhelpful and potentially harmful to patients who need instead to be given correct diagnoses and treatments appropriate to whichever of any number of hundreds of different diseases they actually have. 'CFS' and M.E. are NOT the same! M.E. is a distinct and testable neurological disease similar to M.S., while 'CFS' is a wastebasket diagnosis based on the presence of fatigue. We all need our correct diagnoses. See Dr Hyde's book Missed Diagnoses Myalgic Encephalomyelitis & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Second Edition for more information on this issue.

Some of the recipes in the book were good and I appreciated that they used real food ingredients. This book gives a reasonable overview of some of the benefits of adding ACV to your diet. If you want to learn more about ACV you may want to see if your library has a copy of this book.

ACV is good stuff! It aids my digestion of fat and protein significantly. Make sure you buy a brand that has 'the mother' in it and isn't overly processed.

Jodi Basssett, The Hummingbirds' Foundation for M.E.

If you've heard that apple cider vinegar is good for cleaning, and we all know the "apple a day keeps the dr. away" phrase, and that's all you know? Then you don't know diddly about ACV! This book is full of information all about this humble little fruit and ACV. If you're going for a more natural and healthy lifestyle, this book is for you! (BTW: I've lost about 10 lbs, over a few months, just from following one tip in this book!)

The Bible Cure For Auto-immune Diseases: Ancient truths, natural remedies and the latest findings for your health.)I was somewhat disappointed in this book. It was okay, but sort of a let down as there was a lack of clear solutions. On the positive side, it was not expensive.

Loved this book. I've bought several other Bible Cure books on various other health issues. Not only does this book provide great health information, I love the scripture and prayer that goes along with it. I've bought more than one to give to a friend.

I really like this book but....

Maybe I didn't read the whole description but this is a very small and thin book. It's got some good info in it, although somewhat repetitive if you know anything about autoimmune disease. It's great but not exactly what I was expecting.

This book touches on all the areas that can cause autoimmune disorders and things to do to improve them. It's a wonderful little all round reference book to carry with you that talks about diet and supplements. I think it's a very good start. You wil have to do more research likely but this touches on every area and will get you pointed in the right direction to get well. I've purchased several to give to my friends with autoimmune disorders so they know there are things they can do to get well. Prednisone helps manage symptoms but this book talks about things to do to make you better.

Shop Your Closet: The Ultimate Guide to Organizing Your Closet with Style

Shop Your Closet: The Ultimate Guide to Organizing Your Closet with StyleI was looking forward to reading this book after learning about it from some fashion magazine, but I unfortunately I have to agree with the other negative review on here. (I'm surprised there's only 1 so far!) I too am unsure what the other reviewers are raving about...

Here is the synopsis of the book:

Throw out or donate a lot of your clothes

Make a list of every clothing item you owe (who has time for this?!)

Go out and buy yourself a whole bunch of new clothes

Build your own shelves to organize your closet (I, for one, cannot build my own shelves)

The book re-hashes a lot of old/stale advice such as throwing out clothes you have not worn in a year, not using wire hangers, folding sweaters, not keeping your clothes in plastic from dry cleaners, etc. There are a few useful sections, such as advice on packing for a trip, and instructions on selling old clothes on Ebay (although nowadays it's almost impossible to sell clothes on Ebay unless they're designer duds for a deep discount price), but overall, this book was a waste of my time.

This book is surprisingly light on useful information. I only picked it up because of a feature in InStyle Makeover magazine. I was impressed by the little tidbits of information the book author provided. But the book itself was a HUGE disappointment. I expected to see more information on how to really make the most of your closet space, as well as restyling clothing and seeing your old clothes in a new light. It had almost zero content concerning truly 'shopping your closet'. I'm befuddled by the high reviews it makes me believe the reviewers are all friends of the author and therefore unobjective.

Save your money and purchase Closet Control by Barbra Horowitz instead. It's far more comprehensive and covers everything this book does and so much more. I found it in a bargain bin and if I'd realized it was superior before buying Shop Your Closet, I could have saved a lot of money.

I must admit I was rather disappointed after reading this book. I bought the book with the intention of the title "shopping my closet" and instead found the author going through giving the basics of organization of not just a closet but other household areas. While her writing style was light-hearted and fun, I wouldn't recommend this book if you are someone who feels they have a closet full of clothes, shoes and bags yet never the right thing to wear as this book does not help you with that. I would recommend The One Hundred by Nina Garcia or for a good organization book, Peter Walsh's books.

This book is fabulous for anyone that has been hoarding clothes and has lost track of what is in their closet or for anyone that has limited space. Melanie provides tips for organizing your closet in clear easy steps with pictures and diagrams and gives you the motivation and guide to stop procrastinating. I loved the tips for keeping clothes in their best condition and for travel. Her advice can easily be used in other areas of the home that need organizing also. Particularly her travel/packing tips are helpful, practical and realistic! I highly recommend it!

Want Shop Your Closet: The Ultimate Guide to Organizing Your Closet with Style Discount?

I really can't imagine what the reviewers who have given 5-star ratings are impressed with. There is nothing here but common sense. The tired old advice to go through your clothes and make three piles: keep, donate and throw out. Advice to get rid of lots of clothing, and decide what you need and go out and buy it. I had such high hopes for this book and kept reading, hoping to come up with something useful. There was one little piece of information that I hadn't heard: In order to make ironing easier, put your clothes to be ironed in the freezer so that they will pick up some moisture. This won't help me since I have about two square inches of free space in my freezer, but it may help someone.

The Anarchy of Empire in the Making of U.S. Culture (Convergences: Inventories of the Present)

The Anarchy of Empire in the Making of U.S. CultureIn THE ANARCHY OF EMPIRE IN THE MAKING OF US CULTURE Ms. Kaplan has put together a number of illuminating readings of selected American texts as a way to explore the beginnings of empire, its expression in the U.S. in the mid to late 19th century. Her sources range from women's magazine's such as Harper's, works by Twain and W.E.B. du Bois, through "Birth of a Nation" to Welle's "Citizen Kane." She shows how the boundaries of empire were drawn, and how no one was were untouched by its discourse whether they recognized its contours or not.

She begins with a discussion of Mark Twain's first real assignment as a newspaperman: writing "letters" from Hawaii that were published in a San Francisco newspaper intended to promote the island to mainland businessmen and settlers. These letters and his observations later formed the basis of his first lectures and thus served as the springboard to his later career as a novelist. Twain, she notes, in his personal letters to friends and family is drawn to and repelled by the exotic, anxious to witness the rites of the dying Hawaiian people before they pass from history, and at the same time scandalized by their cultural practices, such as their lascivious dancing. Known generally now as an anti-colonialist because of an article he wrote during the Spanish American War(s), she demonstrates how he, knowingly, and with no little anxiety, early on recognized he was implicated in the colonial project. On the sea voyage to Hawaii, for instance, he comes down with a bad cold, and mordantly writes to a friend that the illness he bears may kill off a few more thousand more Hawaiians. Kaplan maintains that Twain's exposure to empire in the color line in Hawaii and the exploitation of that people, (a quite different experience from how he experienced the color line in Missouri), laid the foundation for his later perspective and production of "Huckleberry Finn" some twenty years later.

Other key readings include the first full-length films produced during the "Spanish-American War Mania" when documentary footage of U.S. soldiers was mixed with some staged battles and scripted domestic scenes drew huge audiences to the movies. She suggests that the public happily participated in the jingoistic pursuit of empire through these films, and that these productions laid the groundwork for not just the war movie genre, but the full-length film. Prior to these movies, shorts were the order of the day. She notes these films influenced the structure and visual imagery of "The Birth of a Nation" in 1915, which, if you haven't seen it recently, presents African Americans as the lords of misrule in the American South. Encapsulated in all these cultural productions are the portrayals of non-white men as stupid, power-crazed savages who in their grab at power, attempt to deflower the flower of the white womanhood, while non-white women are seen as exotic and erotically destabilizing. The Birth of a Nation casts the Klan as heroic figures who must preserve civilization through lynching, terror and mayhem. The Rough Riders were seen as masculine white heroes who swept away the decadent vestiges of a cruel empire, freeing Filipinos and Cubans who as non-whites and subjugated peoples could not understand or appreciate the boon of freedom that had been conferred upon them.

Orson Welle's "Citizen Kane," the fictionalized life of Henry Luce, is also examined as critique of the circuits of imperial power. She notes that it is one of the few films that even touches on the Spanish American War as a subject, but that this war was central to Luce's creation of his own media empire. Making the point that the yellow press grew to prominence during this era, repeating the story that Hearst started the war in Cuba to sell newspapers, she shows how the media supported the drive toward empire, and in their cultural productions assigned roles to citizens.

Her larger point is that empire is not a one way street, but rather is complex circuit through which the dreams of the imperial power are modified and altered through contact with the Other. Through her examination of W.E. DuBois, she summarizes his view that WWI was not centered in a dispute between European powers but that it grew out of Africa. By decentering the standard narrative, he rewrites the conflict as the history as growing out of the contact of Europe with Africa. This chapter nicely resonates with her introduction She relates through a Supreme Court decision how Puerto Rico was both a possession, and not a possession, holding it through law at arm's length -a place in which it still resides, in a limbo as both dependent and quasi-independent. A similar judgment was made during the 1830s by the Supreme Court when they ruled that the Cherokee was not a nation in the strict sense, but a dependent population so that they could be uprooted and sent forth on the Trail of Tears. (See the book "1831" Year of Eclipse" by Louis Masur for the history behind that similarly ambiguous decision.

This is a thoughtful book to which full justice cannot be given in a short review. Her location of the Spanish American War as a key node in America's consolidation of its colonial aspirations is important and convincingly done. As a chapter in history, the Spanish American War(s) has always been dismissed as a minor episode, portrayed as the U.S. trying on the role of the colonizer during the colonial era's last gasp, an activity for which as a democracy it was ill suited. What Kaplan shows is that it was a rehearsal for a different kind of imperialism, the stimulation of the American middle-class through narratives of power as presented through the media, and the later colonization of the world through the globalization construct put forth under the rubric of democracy and free trade.
